Victory! Linda’s taken a licking but she’s still ticking!

Dear Readers, 2016 has been a challenging year for me. I thank you for all your prayers, calls, cards and moral support as I’ve had to cope with the unexpected death of the love of my life and my husband of 55 years and a relapse of my multiple myeloma cancer.

I have now had a second stem cell transplant that should put my cancer into remission and help me do more things I love best, including writing about the fun, interesting people, places and things to do in our area.

Christmas to Share Doris and Irene just can’t stop giving their annual holiday party for strangers

H

ow can you tell you’ve been doing something a long, long time?

When you can’t remember whether this is the 50th year or the 51st. That’s how long Doris Pullen and Irene Robbins have been hosting a generous Christmas party they call “Christmas to Share.”

“We thought the 50th party was last year,” Irene said. “Close enough,” said Doris – setting them both laughing together. These two longtime friends practically finish each other’s sentences. They also became partners in an estate sale service that everyone just calls “Doris and Irene.” That venture has its roots in their kindness, as well.

Early on, the women held smaller annual parties in their homes, for a few guests who might not have families or receive presents. They invited elderly or disabled people the pair had met, who lived alone or in nursing homes. Before they knew it, the list grew much, much larger. This year, their party and sit-down holiday dinner may have as many as 125 guests!

This escalation of kindness is not surprising if one knows the active faith and open hearts these two women share. They collect people, whether while visiting homes on behalf of their church or even while at work. Their compulsion to befriend folks together began long ago when Doris worked in a florist shop where Irene did the books and they were asked to help a neighbor who lived behind the store. Her name was Nona.

“The post lady attached herself to her and would come in the store to buy little gifts to surprise her,” Irene said. “She asked us to look in on Nona and we got to know her. She was a corker.”

Originally, the two women took some of their “orphans” caroling and on a church bus tour of Christmas lights. They took Nona along.

As Nona’s health declined, she asked her two friends to take care of her final arrangements. They promised. After her death, they cleaned and spruced up her house and held a sale of her furnishings, then oversaw the sale of the property. “The money went to her church,” Doris explained.

Soon after, two sisters who lived near Nona asked them for the same favor and again they promised. From there, Irene said, their estate sale service grew into a part-time business, even as they kept their real jobs.

“Really, we never meant for it to be a business …,” Irene explained. “It just got out of hand,” said Doris. Eventually, Doris’ niece, Jan Kelley, and Irene’s daughter, Karen Hines, have stepped in and are taking over operations of what has grown to be the area’s leading estate sale service.

“Christmas to Share” was inspired by church visitation, Irene said.

“That’s where we learned to love older people and see the need. And you’d have to be blind not to see it.”

Fortunately, their husbands, Marvin Robbins and Robert Pullen, long ago surrendered willingly to act as a support squad for their wives’ good works. Once, during a visitation, the women agreed to bathe a fellow who seemed to be bed-bound. While he was in the tub they phoned their spouses to bring not only clean clothes, but bedclothes, too. The husbands hustled to the scene to find Mr. Needed-A-Bath all pink and clean and ... well, Doris said, “they were just really good sports about it.”

“I guess nothing we get into surprises them,” Irene agreed.

They don’t think it’s a chore to buy gifts for more than 100, serve a meal and provide entertainment because over these 50-odd years, they learned to prepare year-round. Both can spot a bargain, so they constantly stockpile gifts of cosmetics, clothing, costume jewelry and other goodies.

Irene always remembers that one of their guests’ only wish was “a towel.”

“There’s a corner of stuff in my house up to here right now,” Irene admitted, raising her hand above her head.

As December’s big date approaches, Doris and Irene activate a lot of wonderful Santa’s helpers. Some donors just give money. Other recruits have a wrap party, wrapping every present in beautiful holiday paper and ribbons. One faithful couple has organized the food and cooking for years.

As the guest list now includes more than 10 nursing homes (whose staff chooses residents who are able to attend), Irene and Doris count themselves very lucky to have the help of a local medical transport fleet for “limo” service. When their guest list outgrew their homes, they obtained permission to hold it at Grand Avenue Baptist Church, although it is not an official church event, “which is perfect,” Irene said.

When the big day finally comes, the wrapped gifts are coordinated by color for each nursing home, with name tags and all the trimmings.

“They will not open their presents until they get home,” said Doris. “They hang onto them!”

There has been entertainment over the years by performers as diverse as an Elvis tribute artist, a miniature horse dressed as a reindeer and, currently, a gospel choir. Sometimes, a bit of dancing breaks out!

Volunteer photographers take a picture of everyone with Santa. Bedford’s Camera & Video prints and gives the portraits to all the guests. The women have been touched – but uplifted – to see these Santa portraits displayed at the funerals of some of their guests.

Irene and Doris began to dress alike for the party years ago. Lately, they’ve been wearing matching Santa outfits and you’ll never believe where they found them: “Frederick’s of Hollywood!” they shrieked and then, giggled.

“But we wear pants with ours!” Irene said.

All the happiness the party creates makes any work or expense worthwhile to them. Although it is hard to believe, given their zippy energy and flawless appearance, they are both 80 years old.

“We’ve been doing this for 50 years, we’re 80; so we’ve been saying we’re going to stop,” Irene said. They’ve been trying to recruit replacements for a while. Both realize that even though they make it sound easy, giving a party for 125 people is daunting to someone who has volunteered as just one cog of their wheel.

But will they really stop after this year?

“I flat don’t know,” Irene admitted, doubting her own declaration of the end. “We’re saying this is the last year. I even put it in our letter. You tell me, when someone only wants a towel, when are you supposed to stop?”

In the meantime, there is this year’s party to throw. It’s on! And these best friends, for the 50th – or 51st – time, are ready. They can’t wait to show their love, with a gift for every guest.

“This is something we’ve decided to do every year. It’s interesting having conversations with them about children around the world who don’t have toys and a Walmart nearby. You can even track your boxes online to see what country they wind up in.”

Leslie and Josh Higgins go a similar route with their 2-year-old daughter, Adalynn.

“We always get an angel from the Salvation Army Angel Tree,” explained Leslie. “I’ve started getting one that is the same age as Adalynn, and this year she started helping pick out gifts for the little girl we got. I explained that we were buying her Christmas because she didn’t have anyone to get her presents. Of course, she asked, ‘why’ to everything I told her, but she got into helping pick out the gifts.”

Beth and Nathan Sell also embrace this idea with their sons, Caleb, 2 ½, and Daniel, five months. “We are starting to pick an Angel Tree child the same age as each of our kids this year,” said Beth. “I am excited because I think Caleb will finally understand what it is about.”

Countdown with an Advent calendar and Scriptures Keeping the emphasis on Christ’s birth also is a key factor for our families. Amy and Brian Price do an Advent devotional each Sunday in December with their sons Noah, 13 and Gibby, 10.

“We started when they were little and found plush material candles and wreath,” shared Amy. “Now that they are older, we use real candles and they take turns lighting one. We also sing a verse from a Christmas hymn.”

Many also use Advent calendars to count down to Christmas and incorporate Scripture with the nightly December ritual.

“Four somethings” help balance parents and children Hearing the varied traditions from my friends has me even more excited about the coming holidays, especially with it being my daughter, Madelyn’s, first Christmas. A tradition we started when my son, James, was born was the “Four Somethings” gift idea.

Suggested by my former boss (thanks, Zena!), the concept is to give “something you want, something you need, something to wear and something to read” to our children. This leaves some wiggle room to include a fun toy or splurge item, but also can be something as basic as new sheets, socks or pajamas, for the need or wear item.

Marking milestones with heirloom ornaments We also will add a new ornament to our collection. It includes a piece from each year of our marriage highlighting major milestones such as our wedding, new home, new jobs and new babies. My mother handed down the ornament tradition to us, which she inherited from her parents. Each year on Christmas Eve, she and my dad gift all their grandchildren with a new ornament keepsake.

Christmastime has always held some of my fondest memories and it is, by far, my favorite time of year. I am grateful for the opportunity to pass down some of the same traditions my parents started with my siblings and me, and I love seeing how many of my friends are doing the same with their own families. Who knows … I may even “borrow” a few of their ideas and start some new holiday traditions at my house!

Christmas Honors inspires volunteers

E

ach December since 2009, thousands of volunteers experience pride mixed with humility as they participate in Christmas Honors. They answer the call to place wreaths at all veterans’ graves at the Fort Smith National Cemetery.

It’s a simple task. On a Friday, people convene to unpack the greenery. On a Saturday, volunteers and veterans’ families will place the wreaths at every grave.

Although it has become a tradition, it is never routine, according to Philip Merry Jr., a founder and organizer of this mass gesture of respect.

When circumstances caused the usual dates of the second week of December to be moved to the third week, Dec. 16-17, they conflicted with the weekend before final exams for members of the Junior Reserve Officer’s Training Corps of Northside High School.

This JROTC unit has given such loyal service to Christmas Honors that it has been designated by the committee’s by-laws to decorate the western section of the cemetery. Volunteers are plentiful and will take over this year, Merry explained. But the cadets did not want to miss performing this honorable duty.

“We must do our part,” was the response of the student program’s leader, retired Lt. Col Jason Meharg. The 375-member unit, the largest in a nine-state region, has volunteered to pick up, clean, dry and pack the wreaths for storage in January. Last year, the JROTC unit surprised the Christmas Honors committee by picking up all the wreaths one day early.

“They have told the community to stand down – they want to do it all,” Merry said.

While more than 1,700 volunteered for the December work days last year, often fewer than a hundred workers have picked up wreaths in past Januarys. “We feel blessed,” Merry said.

“Students walk away from Christmas Honors with a greater appreciation for people who have served,” said Meharg, who has led the JROTC program for two years, along with three assistant instructors. “Overall, we must serve more than be served.”

As have many, Meherg has had a Christmas Honors moment. He came upon the grave of a member of the combat unit with whom he served in Iraq and met that soldier’s brother.

How to Volunteer Individuals or groups who want to unpack and prepare 16,000 wreaths can volunteer from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Dec. 16 at the Fort Smith Convention Center, 55 South 7th Street.

People of all abilities can serve by fluffing the artificial wreaths, straightening the bows and loading them for transport across the street to the National Cemetery. Seniors and children may sit to do this simple, indoor task.

Others will stage the wreaths all along the cemetery drives.

From 8 to 10:30 a.m. Dec. 17, families will have private time to place wreaths at the headstones of loved ones. There is an 11 a.m. public ceremony at the cemetery pavilion.

Paul’s beefs up a cook’s confidence ust try to get out of Paul’s Meat Market without a recipe or expert advice about how to cook what’s wrapped up in white paper.

Friendly talk about the freshly customcut premium meats are exactly what’s kept the customers coming to the full-service butcher shop Paul Wiesenfels opened 31 years ago in Maybranch Square.

According to Paul, every one of his staff has his own following who want a particular butcher to prepare their order. And he likes it that way.

Three decades ago, he was a one-butcher shop, hustling back and forth from the cash register to the block to cut meat by himself.

Paul started behind a meat counter when he was 16, at a former Piggly Wiggly store. At 18, he had trained and become a real, union butcher.

Consolidations and closings in the corporate grocery industry left him out of a place to work in 1985, when he went out on his own with Paul’s Meat Market.

service followed him right into the door, for which he is thankful. It also helped that he had grown up in Park Hill in a big, Catholic family and spent his boyhood throwing newspapers to his neighbors.

“I looked over the counter the other day while I was talking to a customer from the grocery store and two customers from my paper route were in line, talking to each other,” Paul said.

One of his sons, Adam, is a butcher alongside him with “his own entourage” of customers, Paul said. “I stood Adam on a milk crate across from me when he was big enough and tossed him chunks of fat to learn to cut.”

Another son is a veteran of Afghanistan with the 188th Wing. He’s the reason Paul shipped the store’s handmade beef jerky across the world.

“By hand” is what a butcher shop is all about.

Every day, Paul’s prepares foods to customers’ specific preferences, such as fresh sausage from a South African patron’s family recipe or steaks cut to a desired thickness.

HOME The staff probably doesn’t realize they discuss every cut of meat they ring up, but stand in line listening and get educated. The butchers answer questions, all day, about temperatures, spices, ovens vs. grills or even what side dishes pair well.

From “how many are you feeding?” to a descriptive “take it out when it looks like this,” the know-how is on tap.

The neatly arranged shop seems to hold every imagineable meat-related ingredient, from rubs to condiments and sauces. In cold cases there are frozen meats, stew, soup or chili to heat at home, chicken and ham salads, all made in the shop.

Fresh produce such as potatoes, onions, garlic or tomatoes are in stock. Paul’s carries gourmet cheeses, breads and crackers, too.

Besides all the people who like him, slip around back when Paul is taking a break. Every dog on a nearby walk drags its owner to the shop’s back door and Paul seems to know most of them by name. It figures, right? He’s pretty sure his own dogs love him for himself, but they do examine him extremely closely when he goes home from work, he said.

After 31 years of very physical work, he’s glad a son with strong arms is beside him, Paul said.

“I told my wife one night I was so tired – the demands have been relentless today! And she said, ‘Think of all the people who are sitting down to Paul’s meat tonight.’ I had to say ‘Forgive me, Lord, for ever complaining.’”

The little Grinchy Eyes couldn’t be simpler. A yellow candy melt and two mini M&Ms. Cut the candy melt in half, flip to the flat side and attach M&Ms in the center with a bit of melted almond bark.

Arrange on cupcakes that have been frosted with green buttercream, like so.

Insert a lollipop stick and push a strawberry with the stem trimmed off onto the stick, top down. Push a mini marshmallow into the top.

WHAT’S COOKING with KRISTAN ROLAND APPLESAUCE RAISIN COOKIES 3/4 cup vegetable shortening 1 cup packed brown sugar 2 large eggs 11⁄4 cup all purpose flour 1/2 tsp. salt 1 tsp. ground cinnamon 1/2 tsp. ground cloves 2/3 cup unsweetened applesauce 1/2 tsp. baking soda 2/3 cup raisins 1/2 cup granulated sugar

CHOCOLATE PEPPERMINT SANDWICH COOKIES Cookies 1 box chocolate cake mix 2 large eggs 1 stick butter, slightly softened Frosting 2 sticks butter, slightly softened 4 tbsp. milk 4 cups powdered sugar 1½ tsp. peppermint extract ½ tsp. vanilla extract Red food coloring 3 disposable piping bags and large piping tip, if desired Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Cookies: In the bowl of your mixer, beat cake mix, eggs and butter until a dough is formed.

Scoop dough onto ungreased cookie sheets with a small cookie scoop, 2 inches apart. Bake for about 7 minutes, until cookies are crinkly and edges are set. Let cookies cool on baking sheet for a few minutes before removing to wire rack to cool completely.

Frosting: In the bowl of your mixer, beat butter, milk, and both extracts on medium speed until smooth. Slowly add powdered sugar, beating on low until just combined. Increase speed to high and beat for one minute, until frosting is fluffy and smooth. Divide frosting in half and color half with red food coloring, if desired.

Fit one piping bag with large piping tip. Fill one piping bag with red frosting and another with white. Snip off the ends and place both in the bag that has been fitted with the piping tip.

Pipe frosting in a swirl on the flat side of a cookie. Repeat with half the cookies, topping each with the flat side of another cookie.

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Place raisins in a bowl and cover with very hot water. Let sit for 5 minutes, then drain and pat dry.

In a medium bowl, combine flour, salt, cinnamon and cloves. Set aside.

In the bowl of a mixer, beat shortening and brown sugar on medium speed until fluffy, about a minute. Add eggs, one at a time, beating on medium until combined. With the mixer on low, slowly add flour mixture until just combined.

In a small saucepan, heat applesauce until it just begins to bubble. Remove from heat and stir in baking soda. Add this mixture to the dough and beat on low until combined. Fold in raisins.

Drop dough with a large spoon on ungreased cookie sheets, 2 inches apart. Sprinkle with granulated sugar and bake for about 12 minutes or until cookies are puffy and edges are golden brown. Let cool on sheets for a few minutes before removing to wire racks. Makes about 3 dozen cookies.

ANGEL FOOD MACAROON BLOSSOMS 1 (16 oz.) box Angel Food cake mix 1/2 cup water 1 tsp. almond extract 3 cups sweetened, shredded coconut 3 dozen Hershey Kisses Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line baking sheets with parchment paper and set aside.

In the bowl of your mixer, beat cake mix, water and almond extract on low until combined. Increase speed to medium and beat for one minute. Fold in the coconut with a spatula.

Drop dough with a small cookie scoop on prepared sheets, a couple of inches apart.

Bake for about 10 minutes or until edges turn golden brown. Remove from oven and immediately press a Hershey Kiss in the center of each cookie. Let cool for a minute, then remove to wire racks to cool completely.

Have a cabin Christmas at Mount Nebo State Park

I

’ll be home for Christmas ... you can count on me. However, I will also be gallivanting around enjoying the joys this area has to offer during this festive time of the year with my partner Vernon. I can’t garden in December!

Holiday memories are as personal as our lives can get. Perhaps yours are of a favorite food or traditions. One of our family traditions is a visit to Mount Nebo State Park for my birthday, which falls right in the middle of Thanksgiving and Christmas.

I don’t want to lose my reservations at my secret birthday hideaway but everyone should know about this incredible little gem not far from here. At 1,350 feet above sea level, it has 14 miles of hiking trails, 34 campsites and lots of mountain and regular biking trails. There are 14 fully equipped cabins. I mean all-you-have-todo-is-show-up-with-your food-only cabins.

There is a campground with 24 campsites, and 10 primitive hike-in campsites, as well as the usual park amenities.

The story of how the park got started is really amazing, considering the terrain. Jeremiah Donahou, a park interpreter, shared the park’s history.

Around the 1870s, Captain Joseph Evins bought the entire summit. This is what I find fascinating as a gardener: He built a large house and cultivated orchards and vineyards that produced what are said to be very fine wines.

Captain Evins also was quite the showman and promoted this area as “The Paradise in the Clouds.” The town of Mount Nebo grew up around his home and aimed to attract visitors.

Its citizens called themselves Nebolitans.

Park history shows swift growth of a popular mountain resort. The 1889 Summit Park Hotel, which was the showcase of the area, was three stories high. It was nationally known by “upper class” tourists who arrived with their steamer trunks from all over the country. There was a second hotel and guest houses. At times, there 28

were as many as 5,000 guests on the mountain and park pictures show some happy assemblies.

Some stayed all year and some became summer residents to enjoy the cool mountain climate.

It is odd now to hike tranquil, natural trails where beautiful fountains and gazebos once were enjoyed by happy guests. One can imagine you feel the spirits of these many folks.

Unfortunately, a fire destroyed the Summit Hotel in 1918 and it was not rebuilt. The town of Mt. Nebo remained and, today, about 50 private homes remain. Many of those people are descendants of the original residents.

In 1926, the Dardanelle Chamber of Commerce started a move to make Mt. Nebo a state park, hoping to return the tourists. The State of Arkansas purchased surrounding land and it become an official park in 1928.

In the 1930s, almost the last of any Victorian architecture was gone but stone and log cabins, trails and park facilities were built by the young men of the Civilian Conservation Corps, with natural resources found on the mountain. The rustic, CCC style has its own rugged beauty.

We rent one of these lovely cabins with its hand-laid stone deck.

Part of our tradition is that Vernon makes a decadent breakfast of bacon, eggs, sausage and great sourdough bread, which we eat looking over a horizon that is really matched by very few views in the world.

Then, we go for a hike. You can take an easy stroll or a really serious hike. Plenty of signs and

information from the park will point you to the right choice. There are bikes to rent (or bring your own) and fun Ranger Talks.

At the end of a long day, I am the steak master, cooking T-bone steaks. We enjoy dinner with a view all the way to Mount Magazine while the sun sets.

We get the cabin with the outdoor fireplace and fill it full of smoky wood. We always bring Christmas music – Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra – lots of corny stuff. I decorate just a little to make it seem home.

Whatever holiday you celebrate, remember you are making traditions that will last forever.

In 2017, Temple Live is going to be well worth the suspense ere’s the new riddle of the Sphinx: How cool is it going to be when Temple Live, Fort Smith’s almostopen, newest venue, opens in early 2017? The answer: Extremely.

We predict that just as it was in 1928, when this opulent Masonic Temple originally opened, the premier night as Temple Live will be the hottest ticket of the year.

When Fort Smith developer Lance Beaty announced plans for preservation and re-use of the former fraternal order building downtown, he set an ambitious one-year timetable.

Understandably, perfection takes a bit longer when a building is this special and must conform to national historic preservation standards – and to the successful developer’s own. But even before the doors have opened, the multi-use venue has accolades from a regional industry publication, ConventionSouth. In November, it lauded the project with a 2017 “Top New or Renovated Meeting Site Award.”

Mike Brown, Beaty Capital Group’s vice president of acquisitions and development, led the magazine through a preview of the 900-seat theater and pointed out completed, state-of-theart sound and lighting. The Sphinx Club, downstairs, has a teaser video on Temple Live’s Facebook page. It’s going to be awesome. Soon.

Local creativity in a holiday play DECEMBER

The children’s book “The Christmas Miracle of Johnathan Toomey” has been adapted as a stage musical by Chuck King, the Worship Arts minister at Heritage Church, Van Buren.

The original story by Susan Wojciechowski follows a gifted but lonely woodcarver in an early-American setting. No one knows about the mementos of his lost wife and child that he keeps hidden away in an unopened drawer. But when a widow and her young son approach him with a gentle request, it leads to a joyful miracle.

“The original book features only three characters: Toomey, the Widow McDowell and her young son, Thomas,” said King, who began writing the new script and music last spring. “But it presented itself with a lot of potential to develop new characters and situations. Also, I reimagined the setting as right here in Arkansas, so there are some very familiar geographical references, like Lee Creek, for example. In the opening song, the cast sings, “Welcome to the River Valley.”

Local educator and award-winning composer Kevin Croxton is arranging original music by King and creating the score, a blend of musical theater with traditional folk sounds to create the atmosphere and mood of the story-a small frontier town, not unlike Van Buren, in the 1870s.

The cast of 30 is led by Mark Davis, who plays Jonathan Toomey, Marti Salisbury as Widow McDowell, and Jaxon Cazzell as Thomas. Casey Moore, a pastor at Community Bible Church, and Jessye King, returning from Los Angeles, appear in surprise roles that are not in the original story. Other supporting cast members include Sarah Sartor, Greg Wilson, Bob Bretch, Shawna Mason, Lilly Deffenbaugh, and Derek Davis. Costumes are designed by Terry McGonigle of Alma High School. $10. Performers are encouraged to decorate their instruments for Christmas. All performers will receive a special commemorative button.

"TubaChristmas" is a Christmas concert performed by tuba and euphonium players.

Concerts are held in cities worldwide. This year’s event will feature members from The President’s Own United States Marine Band and Pershing’s Own United States Army Band.

Student performers are invited to a private concert and teaching session. The master class/teaching session will take place in the same location, open only to students/performers and their families.The concert is public.

The first TubaChristmas was organized by Harvey G. Phillips to honor his tuba teacher William Bell, who was born on Christmas Day 1902, and was held Dec. 22, 1974, in the Ice Skating Rink at New York’s Rockefeller Center.

There were more than 300 musicians who played that day, beginning a holiday tradition.

KCS Holiday Express making stop in Poteau The KCS Holiday Express is a festive, six-car train that brings Santa Claus and his elves to communities throughout the company’s U.S. rail network at scheduled stops. Guests to the train can visit with Santa Claus and walk DECEMBER through three cars filled with holiday displays.

Each event is free, open to the public and no tickets are required. At each scheduled stop, a charitable contribution is made to the local Salvation Army to provide warm clothes and other necessities for children in need.

The Holiday Express was created in 2001 as volunteers dedicated more than 8,000 hours to transform retired rail cars. Today, these cars feature a smiling tank car named Rudy; a flatcar carrying Santa’s sleigh, reindeer and a miniature village; a gingerbread boxcar; the elves’ workshop; a reindeer stable; and a little red caboose. The train is a spectacle both inside and out. It is comprised of six cars, three of which can be toured. In the caboose, visitors can visit with Santa Claus. After walking through two more cars filled with displays, children will receive a free gift bag. Unfortunately, it is not possible to bring a wheel chair on board the train. However, kindly notify one of the elves of your circumstances, and they will either help you board the train, or Santa Claus will make a special visit outside the train. Free. 4 p.m.

UAFS Landscape Study by Davis

UAFS exhibits work of art student Kenneth Lee Davis Kenneth Lee Davis, an Emmy Award-winning designer and UAFS student, is showcasing his artwork at a campus center exhibit. Davis’ 17 canvases depict urban landscapes, contemporary settings and other subjects painted during his studio art classes at UAFS. A former JANUARY television artist, Davis is studying studio art following a successful career in television that included work in Oklahoma City, San Antonio, Dallas, Hollywood, San Diego and New York. Over the course of his career, he earned four Emmy awards, three ADDY awards and two Broadcast Design Association awards. While working in television, he painted constantly and decided to pursue a career in fine art painting beginning in 2003. He said his work is influenced by Wayne Thiebaud and Rackstraw Downes. Greg Disch has been photographing it for the past 10 years and has released a photo book “Route 66: Ghost Towns and Roadside Relics,” featuring 250 images.

This related exhibit will consist of images of Route 66 from all eight states it passed through. Although it is no longer possible to drive U.S. 66 uninterrupted from Chicago to Los Angeles, much of the original route is still drivable with careful planning. Disch began his photography career in 1977. He now shares his expertise through classes and photo workshops. His work has been published in books, magazines, calendars, websites and as fine art prints. His work can be seen at gregdisch.com, which features numerous “How To” articles, “Photographic Destinations” and an online gallery of more than 10,000 images. Free.

Arkansas artist Linda Williams Palmer will exhibit the works that make up her art project “Champion Trees of Arkansas” and sign her new book of the same title at the UAFS Windgate Art & Design Center.

The exhibit opening begins with a 6 p.m. screening in the Windgate Theatre of the documentary “Champion Trees of Arkansas,” produced by AETN. The film was awarded regional Emmys for Best Cultural Documentary and Best Cinematography in 2014.

Champion trees are the largest of their species in the state.This one-hour original documentary explores these natural wonders and how they influence and inspire the people around them. Champion trees from Fayetteville to Helena and many points across Arkansas are depicted. Palmer, a Hot Springs artist who has spent years photographing and drawing these trees, is featured in the film. The Windgate Foundation was an underwriter for the film.

A 7 p.m. book signing follows the film. Copies of “Champion Trees of Arkansas, An Artist’s Journey” will be available. the hardcover book is published by the University of Arkansas Press. Dec. 3 Hike Owens and Ricketts Mountains TrailBlazers Hiking Club will hike at Owens and Ricketts Mountains.These two mountains have spectacular bluff areas. Owens Mountain is a protected area where ancient pictographs are found on the bluff walls. A short distance down the road Ricketts Mountain features some very unique rock formations. It’s also a good time to meet and consider joining Friends of the Fort, a volunteer group of citizens who assist in many of the National Historic Site’s educational presentations, such as the Night Court re-enactments. Whether serving as a trial re-enactor or preparing refreshments for the audience, many volunteers are needed to support this good program.

Friends of the Fort also conduct activities such as National Train Day, when the group arranged for tourists to visit the National Historic Site via a train ride on the A&M Railroad excursion train. Guests were able to disembark as if arriving at the park’s Frisco Station.

The Friends have many ideas for future activities and volunteer services to enhance visitor experiences, support and promote this tremendous asset, the Fort Smith Historic Site. It’s also a good time to meet and thank the official park staff who maintain, interpret and operate this U.S. National Park Service facility.

UAFS Winter 2016 graduates will hear remarks by guest speaker Judy McReynolds, ArcBest CEO Judy McReynolds, chairman, president and chief executive officer of ArcBest Corp., will serve as the guest speaker for the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith’s commencement ceremony for students completing graduation requirements during the fall semester and second summer term. McReynolds is responsible for managing the multibillion-dollar freight transportation and logistics services company, including oversight of ABF Freight, ABF Logistics, Panther Premium Logistics, FleetNet America and ABF Moving. She has held the role since 2010 and has served as chairman of the board since April. She also serves on many boards, including boards for the UAFS Foundation. A certified public accountant, McReynolds holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Oklahoma. Dr. Paul B. Beran, UAFS chancellor, said, “It is fitting that the head of ArcBest would speak at our ceremony, as she represents a company that provides opportunities for our region and state, including employment for many of our graduates here at UAFS.” With Beran, UAFS administrators presenting candidates are Dr. Georgia Hale, provost and senior vice chancellor for academic affairs; deans of all its colleges and Wayne Womack, registrar. Dennis Peterson Dec. 21 Spiro Mounds Winter Solstice Walks Archaeologist Dennis Peterson leads visitors on onemile, two-hour tours of the Spiro Mounds Archaeological Center, discussing the people created this Mississippian (A.D. 800-1500) capital city. These mounds are among the most important archaeological remains in the United States. A remarkable assemblage of artifacts from the mounds shows that prehistoric Spiro people created a sophisticated culture. There was an extensive trade network, a highly developed religious center and a political system which controlled the region. Yet much of the Spiro culture is still a mystery, including the reasons for the decline and abandonment of the site. Learn why some of the mounds align with the Solstice and Equinox sunsets. Walk fees are $3 adults and $2 children in addition to the regular admission fees of $4 adults, $3 seniors, $1 children. Tours start at two-hour intervals.
