Fighting cancer? Yeah, we got this.

October is a month designated for breast cancer awareness. Be sure and Paint the Park Pink Oct. 6 at the UAFS Campus Green!

But every month, for a while now, we at Entertainment Fort Smith have been made aware of the challenge of surviving cancer.

On our staff are two Wonder Women who are kicking cancer’s behind and we support them all the way.

We also have another breast cancer survivor on staff who bravely went through treatment and is living and working with us, cancer free.

So, yes, we’re aware of all kinds of cancer. Our co-founder and editor, Linda Seubold, has been surviving multiple myeloma since a frightening, advanced diagnosis in 2012. She keeps a positive attitude that few people could maintain and is obedient to the treatment plans made for her at the Multiple Myeloma Institute at UAMS, which she credits for saving her life.

The most we can get Linda to complain about is that this cancer breaks down her bones.

Doctors fused her spine in 2012 and now she’s shorter. By quite a bit. She called here one day from our downtown post office and demanded to know why we’d raised the P.O. Box up so high. I had to tell her it was not the change of address – she’s just shorter now.

We look forward to noting her sixth year of defying her illness in October, on her birthday.

That lady in the Wonder Woman regalia is our co-worker Karrie, known to our advertising clients as the friendly flash who picks up and drops off their “goodies” and takes fantastic advertising photos. When she sent this selfie from her chemotherapy treatment, she said she likes to look tough on those days. Boy, is she.

Both women have been doing harder work than anything we do every day. With their personal styles of faith and positive thinking, the loving support and help of their families and very specialized medical teams, they are alive and defiant, both determined to do what it takes to be here this time next year – and to be well.

You go, Linda and Karrie. We love you.

We’ve got your back.

We urge you to participate this month or at any time to help the helpers – contribute to research, contribute to our wonderful Donald W. Reynolds Cancer Support House and when you know it, contribute your kindness to someone you know who is in treatment.

Also, our strong survivors would tell you to take time to appreciate good health, if you are so blessed as to be well. And they would ask you to be openly thankful to the medical researchers, doctors, nurses and skilled technicians who care for cancer patients. They’re tough, too.

Besides Paint the Park Pink, there are many things to enjoy this October. The magazine is full of fun or fun about to happen, such as the opening of Fort Smith’s new skate and bike park, pictured in progress on our cover.

We have a profile of an important fellow to all Fort Smith Public School students. Phillip Garcia, loved by so many kids, is also being treated for (yet another) kind of cancer. We wish him a swift recovery, too. We need Mr. Garcia to get well soon and we know he will.

There are a lot of good and fun things to do in this issue. We know our strong, surviving friends mentioned here would advise you to enjoy this fall and “Have fun!” It’s our motto.

ost people don’t think about the mechanics of food until they get hungry. Even then, they don’t think about the mechanics. Phillip Garcia does. Food mechanics are Phillip Garcia’s thin red line.

As nutrition director for the Fort Smith Public Schools, this slight, 5foot 2-inch, 145-pound man is responsible for seeing that every child in the Fort Smith Public Schools receives proper, specified nutrition during the school day. Nutrition may not be an issue within the homes of some Fort Smith children. But, it is in others.

A speaker recently told a meeting of Fort Smith Public School teachers that, as a child, he often went to bed with “sleep for supper.”

Garcia’s ideas for feeding children can bring a country to its feet. His love and his kindness can bring it to its knees.

A hard truth is that cancer has stepped into his kitchen. So far, he’s managed to keep it in the pantry with the dried beans and pickled okra.

t the new Riverfront Skate/Bike Park in downtown Fort Smith, you can almost feel the collective anticipation, the yearning of so many skaters and bikers who want to ride those tracks and drop in that bowl.

It’s so-oo-ooo close!

The park’s planners and the Fort Smith Parks Department had not named a date by press time, but a “soft opening” is promised in October. A grand opening day, as well.

One lucky dog (and excellent drone photographer) has had a few test rides. Nick Gibson of Boardertown Skate Park, Fort Smith’s excellent indoor park, was an active consultant in the process of the park’s construction. Here is his early review of the park he helped to shape: “I like the unique style transitions – there’s the Arkansas quarter and a pole jam that goes up a bank at a 45-degree angle. You grind up the rail kinda like a ramp and there’s another rail downhill to grind down. You can launch off the ramp, just to grind the downhill part.”

Got that? Skaters will. We trust Nick.

“The Arkansas quarter is a 10-foot quarter pipe,” he explained. It’s the red wall with a star locating Fort Smith seen in the spectacular drone shots he shared with this magazine.

“The bowl area, or deep end, has a lot of different sections in it,” he continued. “There’s a radius pocket in the right corner and a long, 7foot pool block wall.”

“There’s nowhere else around here you can skate a pool block and good transition,” he said.

He said skaters from all over are hitting him up on Instagram already, from places such as Colorado and Oregon, where he has been posting drone photos of the progression of construction.

“Everyone’s been like, ‘Where the hell is this?

I must come!’ They’re saying, ‘Fort Smith what?

Where?’ There’s a big community, especially on Instagram, that lurks for that new kind of park.

It’s pretty easy nowadays,” Nick said.

“That’s what I wanted to happen. If we got anything as a public park, I didn’t want it to be a waste of funds,” he said. Nick, who is 32, says he’s not a pro, “I just know what’s good and what’s bad. This is good.”

Although he’s a skater and operates a skate park, he welcomes the features that are for bikes.

“It’s really helpful,” he said. “Now, we have good areas for the bikers to go to instead of always wanting to ride the concrete park. That’s the downfall of most skate parks is the clash between the bikers and the skaters fighting for the area. Now that they have a pump track plus the dirt area and all the whole river trail, there is a good blend of everything.”

It’s really helpful to have such a variety of fun zones to ride, he said. Nick hopes to encourage the city in its next planned upgrade to Martin Luther King Park’s skate area to add a dirt back

track and pump track around the perimeter of the hard-surfaced skateboarding area. He sees building more public skate/bike areas in town as a positive move, giving kids a place to exercise outdoors. “Want to get that phone out of their hand and get them outside? Make them a fun place to go ride,” he said.

Skateboarding is a mainstream sport, he said, soon to be an event in the Olympics. Skaters now wear safety equipment and ride on softer, safer wheels. They exercise hard and challenge and mentor each other.

Cyclists are much the same and bicycling is spread across an even wider age group. Parents and kids will be able to enjoy riding together at the park and on the Greg Smith Riverfront Trail.

On bikes or on boards, people teach each other. “It’s kind of like that big brother vibe – you kinda beat up on your little brother but you teach him, too,” Nick chuckled.

This helps reduce injuries, Mom. It’s good that different ages groups will skate together.

“You can say, ‘Hey, don’t try that yet. Try this trick and that trick and then you can build up to the big trick,’ and it keeps them from getting hurt,” Nick said.

Cause for Paws Humane Society’s biggest party is for saving the lives of animals

Y

es, the HOPE Humane Society will throw a swell soiree where dressed-up dogs strut a catwalk during a gala fundraiser Nov. 2.

The board members, staff and volunteers of Fort Smith’s only animal shelter also will muck out cages, drive an adoption van or climb into a kennel to comfort a terrified dog. These animal lovers will do whatever it takes to save the lives of animals in hope of sending them to a safe and loving forever home.

Cause for Paws is the society’s biggest fundraising effort. Those who attend help merely by purchasing a ticket to have a wonderful evening enjoying the music of Cutthroat Trout, a delectable dinner and entertainment from the presence of furry guests. No attendee will be pressured to take home a canine fashion model, but everyone may be tempted (intentionally) as lovable, needy dogs are paraded by.

Getting animals adopted by responsible owners is just one part of the mission of the HOPE Humane Society, which is the prevention of cruelty to animals, the relief of suffering among animals, placement of animals in responsible homes and the extension of humane education.

In Fort Smith, the society has to mount a full-on campaign on all those goals. In the short term, the society has resolved to push for an ordinance requiring a municipal animal license that encourages by lowered fees, spaying/neutering animals and pet I.D. chipping. HOPE board president Sam Terry raised the proposal at a recent city board of directors meeting and, subsequently, progress is under way.

Storm Nolan, HOPE board vice president, said at that same town hall session that proper animal welfare ordinances and practices are “quality of life” issues in which Fort Smith compares unfavorably with surrounding, competing cities. Failing to address pet overpopulation with common sense could turn off potential economic development in Fort Smith and the area, he said.

But currently, the shelter has been dealing with a daily emergency of overpopulation at the shelter – straining to help animals in its care that have almost doubled the capacity of the facility. The effort to lower the pet population at the no-kill shelter called on all the resources and creative solutions its supporters could muster.

Late last month, the opportunity arose to fly a planeload of adoptable animals to shelters in Oregon willing to receive them and place them in homes within the week. Adoptable animals are in shorter supply there exactly because of more progressive spay/neuter practices.

Citizens there are actually short of shelter pets.

Fido Flight donors, including Temple Live, First Presbyterian Church and the husband of Priscilla Moore, who gave in his late wife’s memory, plus general donations, helped to pay the airfare for this transport.

Pets just as beautiful as these former models are available now.

Almost daily, the HOPE Humane Society holds some form of fundraising with the help of community partners. Recently, there have been creative food drives, “Girls Nights Out” parties, personal donations in lieu of birthday gifts, donut sales and more.

Volunteers are sought to dream up even more imaginative, frequent fundraising events and efforts. Even children, with permission and help from their parents, can make significant contributions to save animals.

From the website hopehumanesociety.com, find information about how to make donations while shopping online. Amazon and other online sellers allow a portion of purchases to go toward local donations.

Attending the Cause for Paws dinner is only one way to begin supporting the humane society. The menu this year includes prime rib, vegetable kebabs for vegetarians, a popular “Crack Mac” dish, a margarita station and other beverages.

Cutthroat Trout, a talented string trio, will play a repertoire that runs from jazz to pop to classical. The runway style show is the focal point of the evening. Surrounding booths will offer pet lover merchandise such as T-shirts for humans, attire for pets and excellent pet products. There will even be a Smoochie Poochie booth for doggy kisses.

Cats don’t catwalk, but will be available in the society’s mobile adoption van. They prefer their own private accommodations.

Tickets are $75. Table sponsorships are available. The party begins at 6 p.m. at the Fort Smith Convention Center, North 9th Street and Rogers Avenue, Fort Smith, Ark. For tickets, tables or more information, contact the shelter at 479-783-4395.

Furry Facts: On any given day this year, there have been 600 to 700 furry friends in the shelter. At an expense of $25 per day per pet, the need for funds is enormous. Neumeier’s Fall Festival The grounds of Neumeier’s Nursery and Greenhouses become a festive autumn wonderland at its annual Fall Festival.

This good girl is learning daily to become a compassionate helper ope is a little young to have a career, but this fluffy-haired girl is already learning to fit in at her workplace and get along with her co-workers and clients, alike.

Her job description is a skill that comes naturally to her – to be friendly, gentle and genuinely interested.

The 2-year-old “goldendoodle” was carefully chosen for her pleasant personality and has been to school for appropriate training, said Jim Edwards of Edwards Funeral Home in downtown Fort Smith.

Hope lives with an Edwards employee, family service counselor Jody Hartmeier, and her husband, Bob. The couple accompanied Hope to her obedience training at Pet Partners obedience school in Muldrow, Okla.

With Bob, she learned to walk on a leash and take commands from anyone who asks her to come, sit or lie down.

“The unconditional love of dogs, period, and that dogs can sense when someone doesn’t feel good,” said Edwards, “is what made us consider bringing in a dog to work with us – especially with kids.”

“If young children lose a grandparent or parent, they may not talk about it or express their feelings,” he explained. “But with a therapy dog, they may.”

“We always ask to make sure our client is OK with having a dog around,” he said.

“Only a few people are not ‘dog people.’ We want to make sure they are comfortable.”

Hope has her own areas at Edwards, but is invited by different staff members to come along where she might interact with clients.

“When people are here to make arrangements for a loved one, it’s sometimes very tense. When a therapy dog is around, people are more apt to open up and talk more about their feelings,” he said. Edwards’ staff members are trained to listen empathetically so family members will talk about their loved one and about what would make funeral arrangements more comforting and personal to the bereaved family and friends.

Hope has already been sitting in with families while arrangements are planned. She is quiet and respectful of people’s boundaries, but offers herself to the people who would seem to need her most, he said. “She’s a leaner,” he laughed.

“She seems to sit beside the right people and lean, just lightly, against their legs. Dogs just seem to help with the morale of people, in general.”

In order to be certified as a therapy dog, Hope had to become used to meeting many strangers.

She was required, at a year old, to go to 10

public visits, five supervised by an evaluator, to busy public places such as the VA Hospital in Fayetteville and to some elementary schools. They went through a second dog training program with a therapy dog organization called Love on a Leash.

Edwards knows that having Hope on premises is “kind of outside the box” for a funeral home, but he has learned from other colleagues that the presence of a therapy dog can be healing in special ways.

“One of my friends had to make funeral arrangements with a mother who had two boys under 10 whose father had died of a heart attack. His goldendoodle, whose name is Gracie, loves to play ball. When they saw Gracie, they sat out there in the lobby and played with her,” he said. “When he and the mom came out from making the arrangements, there were those two boys, laying on the couch with Gracie.”

Edwards and his staff are evaluating, with kindness, whether the job suits Hope, and Hope suits the job. She’ll be well-loved, regardless.

“When we decided to bring her in, I said, ‘Let’s hope she gives people hope – let’s name her Hope,’” Edwards said. Hearing her name, Hope herself lightly thumped her tail from her quiet rest beside Edwards’ chair.

Vanilla Cupcakes 2 sticks salted butter, slightly softened 2 cups fine granulated sugar 4 large eggs 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 21⁄2 cups all-purpose flour 2 tsp. baking powder 1 cup whole milk Vanilla Butter Cream Frosting 3 sticks salted butter, slightly softened 1/3 cup heavy cream 2 tsp. vanilla extract 51⁄2 cups powdered sugar Raspberry Claw Marks 1/4 cup seedless raspberry jam 2 tbsp. light corn syrup

CLAW MARK CUPCAKES Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line 24 muffin tins with cupcake liners and set aside.

In a large bowl, mix together flour and baking powder. Set aside.

In the bowl of a mixer, beat butter and sugar on medium speed until light and fluffy, about 2 minutes. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each. Add vanilla.

With mixer on medium low, add flour and milk alternately, starting and ending with flour and scraping bowl as needed. Fill muffin tins 2/3 full.

Bake for about 15 minutes or until center of cupcakes spring back when lightly touched. Remove from oven and let cool completely on a wire rack.

Frosting: In bowl of your mixer, beat butter, cream and vanilla on medium speed until combined. With mixer on low, slowly add powdered sugar until just combined. Increase mixer speed to high and beat for one minute, until light and fluffy. Using a piping bag or a re-sealable sandwich bag with a corner snipped off, pipe a mound of frosting on each cupcake. Chill frosted cupcakes for at least one hour, until frosting is firm.

Claw marks: In a small bowl, whisk raspberry jam and light corn syrup together. Press a small sharp paring knife into frosting of each cupcake three or four times, creating triangular indentations. Spoon jam mixture into each indentation.

BAT TRUFFLES 8 oz. cream cheese, softened to room temperature 2 tsp. vanilla extract 21⁄2 cups powdered sugar 1 cup milk chocolate chips 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips 1 cup butterscotch chocolate chips 16 oz. chocolate almond bark (or candy melts) Chocolate sprinkles 18 chocolate sandwich cookies cookies, split open with the cream scraped off, then cut in half to resemble semicircles Beat cream cheese on medium speed until smooth.

Scrape sides of bowl, then add vanilla and powdered sugar, beating until smooth.

In a medium glass bowl, melt all milk, semisweet, and butterscotch chips in the microwave, stopping every 30 seconds to stir until smooth. Add to cream cheese mixture and beat on medium until combined.

Refrigerate 3 hours until firm.

Use a small cookie scoop to scoop chilled truffle mixture out of bowl and roll into balls. Place on a waxed paper-lined cookie sheet. Melt bark in a small bowl, then dip each truffle in melted chocolate, allowing excess to drip off before placing back on the baking sheet.

Immediately add chocolate sprinkles before coating sets, then gently insert cookie halves (wings) into each side.

Let truffles set until firm. Store in the refrigerator.

PEANUT BUTTER BROWNIE S’MORES PIE Crust 3 cups finely ground graham cracker crumbs 1/2 cup granulated sugar 12 tbsp. salted butter, melted Gooey Peanut Butter Brownie 1 box fudgy brownie mix 1 small box chocolate fudge instant pudding mix 1/2 cup water 1/2 cup vegetable oil 2 large eggs 2/3 cup creamy peanut butter Topping 1 bag regular size marshmallows In a medium bowl, mix graham cracker crumbs, sugar and melted butter until combined.

Press into the bottom and up the sides of a 9inch springform pan. Place in the refrigerator to chill for at least one hour.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a large bowl, combine brownie mix, pudding mix, water, oil and eggs. Stir with a wooden spoon until combined. Pour into prepared crust. Spoon peanut butter into a bowl and heat in the microwave for approximately 20-30 seconds, until softened considerably but not liquid. Spoon into brownie mix and swirl with a knife. Bake pie for 30-40 minutes until just barely underdone – a bit of fudgy, gooey batter is OK, but you don't want the middle of the pie to be raw. Remove from oven and let cool on cooling rack to room temperature, then chill several hours for easier cutting and serving.

Top with whole marshmallows, then place in oven set to broil for several minutes, until the top is golden. Slice and serve.

Note: Spray a sharp knife with nonstick cooking spray before slicing to prevent the toasted marshmallow from sticking to the knife.

2nd Annual Pro Cowboy Country Music Awards bring the best of a beloved old sound to Fort Smith From the first notes of a “Cowboy Country” song, no further definition of the OCT genre will be needed for people of a certain age. It sounds like 78 and 45 records spinning on the home record player before the family got a HiFi. It recalls Tex Ritter on the radio and maybe even Roy Rogers on the screen. Nostalgic though it is, this American music is more than just a memory – it is a living art form, according to Royal Wade Kimes, founder of the Pro Cowboy Country Artist Association and awards show.

“Everyone, women and men, says, ‘I didn’t think I’d ever live to hear or see this kind of music again.’ New, young artists are taking up the style. There are about 60 stations out West and lately, in Missouri, that are playing cowboy country music,” said Kimes. “By televising the awards from Fort Smith, we want to make this the cowboy country music capital.”

Kimes, a national recording artist known as “The Gentleman Outlaw,” has recorded 14 albums, received numerous awards as an artist and has written songs for Garth Brooks, Diamond Rio, Gene Watson and others. He was voted Best Living Western Solo Musician in 2010 by True West magazine and was nominated by the Academy of Western Artists in the Most Outstanding Male Western Artist category, in 2014. Locally, he is known for charitable trail rides that end in a bonfire and outdoor concert in the Boston Mountains. These pleasure rides have raised funds for many Royal Wade Kimes area non-profits, especially for children and families.

Kimes points out that today’s cowboy country music is built on the traditions of the past.

Bob Stevenson, head of the theater department, is no stranger to devising nationally recognized original theater at the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith, but creating his upcoming show was like “learning to walk again.”

Theatre @ UAFS’ new production, “Mist and Shadows,” might have been difficult to devise, but Stevenson and the students performing in the play hope to wow theater lovers with the immersive, interactive production. The show combines elements of escape rooms, haunted houses and installation art, where the audience are active participants.

“The show will be a promenade, where the audience walks around within it. It’s designed to be touched, traveled through and figured out as you go. Expect the actors to talk to you, to touch you, to offer you items and to help you on your journey,” he explained. Interactive shows such as this are part of an emerging trend in theater popularized by theater companies in New York and London.

No bags or purses will be admitted due to the nature of the show, but a coat check will be provided for attendees. Audience members also will be wearing a costume piece similar to a hoodie that will be provided.The show is rated for ages 14 and older due to dark themes, violence and sensuality.

The production is part of Season of Entertainment 38, a yearlong lineup of entertainment sponsored by UAFS, featuring a variety of plays, musicals and symphonic performances. Oct. 30 Ingrid: Documentary Film Screening with the Filmmaker The Center For Art and Education and the Community Rescue Mission present a film, followed by the filmmaker’s live interview with Ingrid Gipson. In this short film by Morissa Maltz, Ingrid tells her own story. She was a mother and successful fashion designer in Texas who left that life to pursue a personal and creative life. She has since become a successful artist and spends her time creating clay sculptures and hosting events at Ingrid Gipson Sculptures Studio and Gallery in Hodgen, Okla. As an artist, Ingrid perceives herself as a storyteller. In her sculptures, she discovers unexpected role models in religion, mythology, art and the collective analysis handed down through generations, to be paid attention to or not. Through her work, Ingrid hopes to inspire others to become consciously aware of the collective human experience. In a live interview on stage, filmmaker Maltz peels away layers of Ingrid’s life and psychological landscape, questioning where that need to create comes from, while connecting it to larger human (and female) concepts. Now streaming: ‘CityBoyz’ web series co-created

by Chad Burris is hilariously funny and original ntertainment Fort Smith has followed the career of Chad Burris, an Alma native, since his time in Young Actors Guild and celebrated with him in a 2015 profile article of the young actor when he landed a role in the hit Broadway musical “The Book of Mormon,” with its national tour. He had not yet graduated from Ouachita Baptist University.

Now, Chad and co-creator Cory Stonebrook have launched an original, five-episode web series called “City Boyz,” available free online. Chad and Cory co-wrote and starred. With Cory’s wife, Tiffany, as producer, they financed the series with a GoFundMe campaign that paid for a six-day shoot in New York, where they all live.

Here’s the set-up: two Florida brothers who still live with their mother win a radio contest that will send them to New York. Chad plays Trystan, an overconfident amateur actor whose only resumé is “directing” senior citizens in local theater where he’s always the star. Cory plays Teddy, the more academic, quiet brother.

Mom showers Trystan with praise, which has created a real ham. It’s his idea to enter the contest.

With a very out-of-date travel guide from their local library, the boys set out to achieve their dreams in the Big Apple.

The series will serve as entertainment and as a demo of both actors’ abilities to write, direct and act. Today, self-producing an indie video can be a means of getting cast. Chad knows video can work – he was chosen for “The Book of Mormon” on the basis of an email he sent to a casting agent followed by an audition video he made here with the help of mentor Brenda Yelvington.

extraordinary. He didn’t assume his roles would come as easily. But he soon won roles in two different productions of “The 25th Annual Putnam Spelling Bee,” in Cape Cod, Mass., and at the Cleveland Playhouse. Oct. 5, he opens off-Broadway in “Book of Merman.” (It’s about Ethel Merman, not a parody of the musical, he said.)

“Now, I’m also auditioning for television,” he said. “For me – I’m a bigger guy – TV is doing that representation of what I look like faster than musical theater. I’m excited, there are fewer rules. In TV, characters are just people.”

Chad met Cory during an improv exercise where they liked working together. Cory has more

experience in indie work and has directed and acted in several previous web shows. He’s onboard with Chad’s strategy. “It’s easier for me to write material that includes someone like me than wait for someone else to,” he said.

“I had a story (for City Boyz) but no idea how to execute it,” Chad said. They agreed to try. “I would write a scene and email it to him. He would do a punch-up of jokes and send it back, then we’d move on. Two days later, we’d have a draft that was funny.”

When the script was done, they raised financing on GoFundMe.com. They shot on their lean budget in six 12-hour days, but it looks like they spent a million. Editing and color correction were some of the post-production expenses.

The team scrambled to find props, wardrobe and extras, something that a crew would have done in a larger production. One episode has the brothers doing a history tour at the home of Alexander Hamilton. (One tourist thinks they’re going to visit Lin-Manuel Miranda.) On location, they luckily found no one at the historic site and used it freely for background.

Chad asked a “bigger” actress he worked with on “Spelling Bee,” Ali Stroker, to play the brothers’ odd NYC roommate. “She is the first person to have performed on Broadway in a wheelchair.

She’s so talented and so funny. She’s been on ‘Glee’ and has done a lot of TV.” Stroker flew in and shot all her scenes in one day. “It was really cool. She improvised some ideas that were wonderful,” Chad said.

“You never know what you’re going to get out of a collaboration but this one was good. I think we’ll continue to write together. We’re planning on marketing ourselves as a team. I definitely like writing a story but I like a co-writer for dialogue and jokes,” Chad said.

“I told myself at the beginning of the year that if I have an idea, I’m going to see it all the way through,” he said. “We’re really proud that we visualized it, we shot it, we really made it.”

Parker Birthday Celebration During the Fort Smith Fall Festival, hosted by the Fort Smith National Historic Site, the Fort Smith Museum of History will celebrate the birthday of the famous Judge Isaac C. Parker. On Oct. 6, enjoy birthday cake and a visit with the judge in the museum's old-fashioned soda fountain. Floyd and Sue Robison will portray Judge and Mrs. Isaac C. Parker and present a 3 p.m. program on the Parkers' time in Fort Smith and their roles as community leaders. The Robisons have researched the Parker’s extensively. Isaac Charles Parker was born Oct. 15, 1838, in Barnesville, Ohio.

He studied law, passed the bar exam in 1859 and began his legal career in St. Joseph, Mo. Parker was elected U.S. representative from Missouri for two terms, 1871-1874. Appointed by President Grant in 1875, Parker began his famous tenure as federal judge for the Western District of Arkansas, a post he would hold until his death in 1896. Many fun events

are planned for the festival: re-enactments, historical activities and programs for kids, cannons, horses, and more at the Fort Smith National Historic Site. In the main gallery, Steve Horan’s “City and Country Impressions” represents a lifetime of reflection and transfiguration of stored memories.

Horan’s urban and rural landscapes create harmony between abstraction and realism; containing recognizable elements rather than a specific depiction of a place. In this way, Horan says his paintings “are fantasy paintings of the real world.” The viewer is allowed to use their imagination to dramatically alter the scale and shape of what they see. In the studio gallery, artist Luis Atilano’s exhibition “Faces by Chalino” includes a portrait of Frida Kahlo, one of the most popular and recognizable Mexican artists and a prominent figure in Mexican culture. The exhibition includes a portrait of singer, actor and film producer Vincente Fernandez, also known as the “King of the Ranchera.” The inspiration for Atilano’s artwork is his love of popular culture combined with the love of his Hispanic heritage.

Contemporary Indigenous art comes front and center in Art for a New Understanding: Native Voices, 1950s to Now – a new exhibition organized

by Crystal Bridges. Discover new stories as today’s Indigenous artists fill the gallery with exquisite colors, images of community and joy, and JAN thought-provoking moments of reflection. The exhibition features more than 80 artworks from the 1950s to today, including paintings, photography, video, sculptures, performance art and more, all created by Indigenous U.S. and Canadian artists. Some of the artists featured in this exhibition include an artist who creates social critiques through basket weaving, three sisters who challenge heavy topics with humor and heart, an artist who created a large-scale mural based on her Northwest Arkansas environmental experience, plus many more. The exhibition will be accompanied by a multi-author catalog that will offer a comprehensive consideration of contemporary Native North American art and feature new essays by art historians, cultural critics, and artists as well as excerpts from key texts from the last 50 years of scholarship and criticism. This famous photograph captures the full anguish of desegregation – in Little Rock and throughout the South – and an epic moment in the civil rights movement. Agricultural production can have a negative impact on the environment. When climate change is added to the mix, harsh conditions occur in both agricultural crops and natural landscapes. As a result, the security of food, soil, water and air quality is threatened. The future of agriculture requires less impact on natural resources and more resilience in the new environment. Oct. 18 The History of Fairview Cemetery with Randy Smith Randy Smith, director of the Edwards Van Alma Funeral Home, will share the interesting story of Van Buren’s Fairview Cemetery and how it came to be on the National Historic Registry. The mayor's appointed advocate of Fairview Cemetery, Smith wrote the National Register nomination for the cemetery. This passionate historian will share stories of the people buried at Fairview, along with its long history. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the plot is located on the northern side of the cemetery, which overlooks historic downtown Van Buren from a sloping ridge that once played a key role in a Civil War battle. Fairview Cemetery also is the location of an odd “mystery grave” that Arkansas folklore says contains the remains of a soldier from the Hernando de Soto expedition.
