October makes everyone want to festivate, everywhere What is it about October? Maybe everyone wants to have a festival because fall never really begins with football and school in September.

But in October, we’re all confident that the leaves will soon turn. We have to get our mums!

And the hay bales! So much burlap – and pumpkins and gourds and why not Halloween decorations!

The populace gets re-energized, I guess, after our summer months truly must come to an end.

Although we’ve all been through a sweaty, humid Halloween or two, there’s always the chance for that first crisp, sunny day of no humidity and, hurray! Sweater weather at last!

Hope springs autumnal.

Honestly, if we had October weather all year round, everyone would move to Arkansas. Not much is prettier or more pleasant in the Natural State.

Consequently, everyone has a fall festival. In our October calendar pages, you can find one in every town in our readership area. But also, there will be the annual hot-air balloon festival in Poteau, pink-themed races and walks and the “Over the Edge” stunt fundraiser for the Survivor’s Challenge weekend has returned.

From the distance of four or five blocks last year, safely on the porch of our Belle Grove Historic District office, we watched tiny specks (that were people!) rappel down the side of First National Bank. That was close enough!

Apparently, they thought it was so much fun, or envied the inaugural participants, that some hardy souls are going to do it again.

More power to them! It looks knee-knocking terrifying to me! All respect to those who have the guts to find it a challenge for a good cause.

Speaking of guts, I was very surprised to learn that the Fort Smith icon we have on the cover, Carolyn Joyce in the character of Miss Laura, claims that when she was a child, she was bashful. After hearing the story of how and why she created the character in whose satin gowns she promotes tourism to our area, I understood that she may have been shy, but never had she been without guts. She has a “can do” spirit and employed it imaginatively to make sure she could get the attention of the tourism industry and tell them about Fort Smith.

You may also enjoy the “can do” attitude of Trey Tounzen, one of many people who hitched up a boat and headed to Texas to rescue floodbound residents after Hurricane Harvey. Many of our area emergency rescue teams, relief agency volunteers and church groups went. But you have to admire individuals who form their own teams and take off to help others.

The spirit of adventure comes hereditarily to Cy Martin and he shares it with Rebecca, his wife, and now their very young daughter. His father, Wendell, and especially his grandfather Bob would have passed that down. We enjoyed the young Martins’ road-trip-with-a-baby and know they’ll go and go and go in the future, too.

We also feature an athlete with grit. Melanie Rice is a Southside High School Maverick football player. She’s a kicker, plays soccer and basketball, too.

That’s what makes this a great place – lots grit and good souls. Maybe you don’t leap off tall buildings, but do consider getting involved with your own personal skills. I refer you to the Volunteer Fair noted on page 53. Find your way!

Carolyn Joyce created a character to put her city on the map for tourism marketing

ourists from all over the nation – and some from other countries – have visited Fort Smith because a hospitable, entertaining character got their attention and invited them here.

But if you had asked Carolyn Joyce a little more than 25 years ago, she would have been the last person to believe she would spend the next quarter-century frequently dressed in a period satin gown, projecting an outgoing personality and sallying up to strangers to talk up her town.

In 1992, when Joyce became the first employee under the director of the new Fort Smith Convention & Visitors Bureau, she thought her job would be to set up the office for the agency enabled to market Fort Smith for tourism, conventions and visitors. It was funded by a new state act that allowed a portion of a city lodging tax to be used to promote tourism.

She had worked before with Dee Carroll, the CVB’s first director, when he directed a major, three-year study about downtown redevelopment. When he asked her to join him at the CVB in a small office at what was then the municipal auditorium, she thought she knew what she was getting into – office administration.

Her job turned out to be much, much more and remains so today.

Three factors would lead to Joyce creating “Miss Laura.” She and Carroll, the only two staffers, went to regional marketplaces for group travel, where they would mostly sit in a booth among many other cities, regions and attractions and pass out information to motorcoach tour directors. It was hard to stand out in the crowd, even though Fort Smith had a great pitch.

Also, she was answering the phones at the CVB and noted many inquiries about Miss Laura’s Social Club, a restaurant in the last period house in Fort Smith’s historic red-light District, once called “The Row.” Although the restaurant had closed, many tour operators were still trying to make reservations.

“So, you hear that for a little while and it kind of clicked,” Joyce recalled. “That place is recognized - and it is sitting there empty.”

At the time, Fort Smith had no visitors center and the small office at the municipal auditorium was nothing special. Within a year, the CVB negotiated with the Donald W. Reynolds organization to purchase the mansion and former brothel.

Joyce helped to design the interior decor of the landmark structure, choosing opulent period wallpaper, fabrics and colors to enhance the beautiful mansion, which has a splendid staircase, massive pocket doors and large parlors. It is an attraction in itself.

Historical research and documentation led the building to be placed on the National Register of Historic Places – the first former bordello listed.

“The restaurant had been called Miss Laura’s Social Club - maybe there needed to be a Miss Laura,” Joyce recalled.

On her own, she commissioned a historically correct costume, hat and jewelry to portray Laura Ziegler, the historical proprietor of the club. She created Miss Laura “with a costume and an attitude,” she laughed.

Describing herself as “the most bashful person” while growing up, Joyce’s only previous performance had been her high school senior play. “In the beginning, I could not get on that staircase and give a presentation. I would lead tours through the house,” she recalled. “Probably within two or three months, I started doing the presentation in front of them and the costume helped a lot.”

She also began recruiting volunteers to staff the visitor center, open seven days a week. Called “Miss Laura’s Starrs,” they give tours of the house, provide visitors with information, maps and suggestions to enhance their stay. Today the Starrs are 70 strong, one of Joyce’s proudest accomplishments. She calls them “family” and shows appreciation to the volunteers with an annual excursion and regular celebrations. The visitors center couldn’t operate without them, she said.

Some of Miss Laura’s wardrobe is on display at the Visitors Center in a velvet-roped dressing room adjacent to her office. She has commissioned more than 20 dresses with hats and jewelry to match. The costumes are designed and created by Les Johnson from Joyce’s ideas. Her milliner is Kathy Burke, who designed hats for the television series Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman. Burke uses Johnson’s fabrics to match the bonnets to the dresses. Photos of each ensemble are sent to a period jewelry designer in Florida who creates original accessories.

“If you sit next to me on a plane, you’re going to get an earful about Fort Smith,” she said. Her character takes a entertaining, light-hearted approach to the real Miss Laura’s occupation, transferring it to a colorful but PG version emphasizing hospitality and fun, along with the true history of Fort Smith’s rich and sometimes rowdy frontier roots.

Joyce created one more role for Miss Laura to meet a necessity. Many tour operators asked for evening entertainment. She gathered 10 performers who wrote short, humorous sketches and interacted with the visitors in characters.

“Little did I know it would take me away from home night after night,” she said. After 18 years, the group of 10 decided to retire, but she still has a core act with Brad Kidder, Sharon Pitts and herself to do “crowd work” greeting and entertaining tour groups and conventions.

The need for entertainment also is met by other troupes that emerged over time, such as the Lawbreakers & Peacemakers re-enactors and “Judge & Mrs. Parker,” portrayed by Floyd and Sue Robison.

But much of “Miss Laura’s” work has been on the road, Joyce said. After creating the character, she made a more memorable impression at tourism conventions and marketplaces.

The CVB represents Fort Smith and all its attractions as a destination, she explained. Motor coach tour operators, in the beginning, were mostly stopping at cities on the Interstate 40 corridor, by-passing Fort Smith.

She and the CVB aim to persuade them to

stop, even for a few hours, at Miss Laura’s Visitor Center or the Fort Smith National Historic Site, but the ultimate goal is to convince group tours to stay here several nights.

Portraying Miss Laura wins their attention for a pitch, she said, “and then you have to drill it down very well. At these conventions, we may have five to seven minutes per appointment.”

“I like to suggest an itinerary set up like a cruise, so that the Fort Smith lodging is their home for the entire time, while they see the whole area, such as day trips to Crystal Bridges in Bentonville, Mount Magazine, even the Cherokee Heritage Center at Tahlequah, along with Fort Smith attractions. It gives them the opportunity to pack up once, but see the area.”

The CVB cooperates with other visitors bureaus to put together these area-wide efforts.

Joyce is a long-standing member of what the Arkansas tourism department calls “the A Team,” traveling together to promote the entire state. In recognition of her professionalism, she was voted by her peers into the Arkansas Tourism Hall of Fame in 2011.

This lifetime achievement-level award was special for several reasons. One was that it is hard to keep a secret from Carolyn Joyce, but the entire state tourism community did; the other was that her husband, T. Bob Joyce, was present with their secretly invited children and grandchildren to see her be surprised. Her husband, whom Joyce credits as her biggest supporter, died in 2012.

With a small but extremely able staff, CVB executive director Claude Legris depends on Joyce “to do her thing,” he said appreciatively.

The CVB staff includes Amy Knight Jones, who markets to attract conventions and events; Russ Jester, who projects Fort Smith worldwide through cutting-edge digital marketing and communications, and executive secretary Deborah Cossey, whom the staff calls their organizing “zookeeper” for a staff that may be inside Miss Laura’s or traveling the country.

Legris also has charge, in a totally separate entity from the lodging tax-supported CVB, of the Fort Smith Convention Center, which has its own director, sales and operations team who are employees of the City of Fort Smith.

As for that notion to use a character to make Fort Smith memorable?

“When I started marketing, I’d have to take a map with me to show them Fort Smith. Now when I walk in, it’s ‘Fort Smith is here!’ They know Fort Smith is in the house,” Joyce said.

And even out of Miss Laura’s costume, she may have winked.

Let’s go, baby! The Martins take off with Ellie in tow With New England on their minds and their toddler in tow, Cy and Rebecca Martin bought an RV and hit the road this summer for a crosscountry family adventure.

The Fort Smith couple and their 16-monthold daughter, Ellie, set out just two days after Cy came home and announced that he had purchased a recreational vehicle. While some wives would panic at the idea of an impulsive buy and road tripping with a little one, Rebecca has become accustomed to Cy’s spontaneity.

“When we were engaged, he told me that he wanted to buy a school bus and make it into an RV,” she said.

The couple didn’t have an exact destination or timeline, but Rebecca did decide to use her blog, “ArkansasMartins,” to share about their sevenstate journey.

In her first post, she wrote, “We’re just going Northeast, with a vague idea of ending up in Maine.” On day seven, she posted “Greetings from Syracuse, New York,” recapping some of their less-than-glamorous moments.

“The first couple of days of our trip were slow going and we had a pretty substantial learning curve. All of my various hair products tumbled out of the cabinets the first day we left ... because who knew you really do have to shut and lock all of the cabinets before you drive off?

Another moment when we knew we were novices occurred when we flooded the gray water tank and there were three inches of standing water in our shower that had to be bailed out with one of Ellie’s toy pails.”

Despite the hiccups, the first stretch was filled with several fun stops, including a visit to Cuyahoga Falls National Park in Ohio. There, they hiked to a beautiful waterfall and around unique rock formations known as “The Ledges.”

They also picnicked at the lake, where Ellie entertained fellow visitors with her peanut butter sandwich eating “skills.”

On their way to New York, the Martins made a detour to Lake Erie, where they enjoyed a bike ride around the island where they were staying.

One of their next big stops was Lake Saranac.

The spot was a familiar one for Cy, who at age 16, drove there to work at a Younglife camp for a month.

“Cy relived memories as we walked around where he hadn’t been for 16 years,” shared Rebecca. “He told me stories about jumping into the lake after curfew and about being mentored by older staff – several specific conversations still shape him today.” After their visit to the camp and some New York pizza by the slice, they stumbled upon the Olympic Training Center and the ski jump that was used in the 1980 Olympics. “Cy and I couldn’t believe how tall the ski jump was. We parked across the street from it and just stared for a few minutes.”

Along the way, the Martins split their evenings between Walmart parking lots, KOA sites and other RV-friendly spots. Using primarily a microwave and stove top, they became accustomed to simple sandwiches at lunch and mac ’n’ cheese dinners. “Ellie has been sustained on hot dogs and pouches ... so, she is a happy camper,” laughed Rebecca.

When they weren’t “fine dining” in the RV, the Martins ventured out to try places along their route. One of their favorites was an oldfashioned ice cream shop in New York.

“Donnelly’s Ice Cream is on the National Historic Register and still uses their original ice cream machine from 1950s. They only make one flavor a day and it changes each day. Cy and I each got a cone of their strawberry swirled with vanilla. And then we couldn’t stop talking about how good it was.” It was so yummy that they later returned for a “second breakfast” of chocolate and peanut butter ice cream!

The following days included visits to Lake Champlain, a drive through the White Mountain National Forest and, finally, a trip to Acadia National Park in Maine. Soon after, Rebecca and Ellie flew home, with Cy continuing on to make a few sales calls before driving back to Arkansas.

Rebecca and Cy both love to travel, and the RV trip is among the many expeditions they have been on together. “Cy and I don’t really plan the stuff we do,” explained Rebecca. “We’ve been married for two years, and we’ve had plenty of adventures. We’ve driven all over Texas, engaged in countless Craigslist deals, spent 10

days in England, ridden in a 100-mile bike race on our tandem, toured the Blueridge Parkway on a motorcycle, bought and remodeled two fixer uppers, and had a baby.”

It appears that Ellie has inherited her parents’ love of travel. “She likes to be on the go and thinks the whole RV is her jungle gym,” noted her mom.

Though they may not have had a detailed plan, Cy and Rebecca did accomplish their goal of making incredible memories. Their flexible schedule enabled them to enjoy their surroundings and to laugh at their wrong turns and “amateur” RV mistakes.

“Cy and I loved our RV trip! Coming off of a hectic and kind of difficult season, it was such a great way for us to really get some good, quality time together and as a family. One of the best parts was really getting to work as a team. Going on an RV trip takes a lot of work and a lot of patience, and it was nice to be able to work through those things together. We will absolutely go on more RV trips - in fact we've already talked about heading out west next year

and hitting more national parks and seeing some friends along the way.”

Children have been learning at Interfaith Preschool for 50 years

S

ince 1967, hundreds of children have had their introduction to school at Fort Smith’s Interfaith Preschool. Three- and 4-year olds get ready for kindergarten in a loving atmosphere.

In October, Interfaith Preschool will hold a month-long open house from 9-11 a.m. daily to welcome the public and especially its sponsors, volunteers, teachers and past students.

Director Ann Law, who has been involved with the preschool for 30 of the 50 years, said many former students have returned over the years to express thanks for the encouragement toward learning that Interfaith teachers gave them. Some former students have brought their own children to attend. There are even thirdgeneration enrollees, she said.

The preschool grew from a community center founded by Dr. John Bayliss, a Methodist minister, and several others who invested in the property left by the closing of a Methodist church on North 5th Street. The center, staffed

by volunteers of every faith, was to be a creative ministry of Christian education to meet needs of the surrounding, low-income community. A preschool was opened in its first year. Many social service programs for children, families and parents were provided through the center, including a medical clinic, tutoring and nutrition classes.

At that first center was the preschool, which is the surviving program of the original ministry. A group of dedicated directors has smoothly passed leadership from one to another. In order of service they are Iris Hightower, Maxine Lewis, Pat Crump, Willie Washington, Cindy

Buzbee, Rebecca Yarbrough, Joanna Garrett, Maxine Marion, Beth Cooper, Claire Flynn, Barbara Haring and Ann Law. One of the last programs provided was English as a Second Language for parents. It is no longer needed, Law observed. For several years, all students and parents are fluent in English.

The children are at a critical time for early learning, such as beginning to learn the letters of the alphabet and numbers. There is age-appropriate math learning, music and art.

And, of course, students are little, lively and so lovable at this age. Interfaith runs in a

gentle and orderly way, but with giggling, soft voices and many hugs.

One long-standing volunteer program pairs “Special Friends.” An adult friend provides a birthday cake and gift and Christmas gift of a toy and clothing to one child.

Louise Turner, the retired children’s librarian of Fort Smith Public Library, regularly reads a story. Other volunteers help with activities such as playing music, teaching art or other activities.

Medical, dental and eye exams are donated annually by volunteer physicians.

Tuition is free because of donations made by several trusts, local churches and individual donors. Small donations of cleaning and school supplies are very helpful, as well. A wish list is always available at the school’s website, interfaithpreschool.com.

Interfaith invites anyone who has attended, sent a child there or who may apply for tuition in the future to visit. Supporters and donors are especially welcome.

“We’d like them to see where their donations go,” Law said.

Creative expression, and giggles, are both in abundant supply at the preschool.

A

uthor, politician and motivational speaker Les Brown once said, “Life has no limitations, except the ones you make.” It is safe to assume Melanie Rice, 16, of Fort Smith holds similar beliefs.

A junior at Southside High School, Melanie is a kicker for the Mavericks football team, the only girl playing this year at the high school level in Fort Smith. While becoming a football player is a relatively new development in her life, Melanie played football for fun with friends in elementary school and had been interested in being a kicker since her early junior high days.

“I had always wanted to kick for a team, but never brought it up in junior high,” she said.

Everything changed when Melanie’s assistant soccer coach Steven Thessing had her kick a football one day at soccer practice. Thessing also is the defensive coordinator for the Southside football team.

“We were looking for a new kicker because some of our guys had graduated. I knew Melanie had a strong leg and that she’s outgoing, so I thought of her,” Thessing recalled. “She got out there and went for it.”

Over the summer, Melanie received a call about joining the football team. Opportunity knocked – and she answered.

“She’s a trooper and has stayed with it. She’s done really well with the transition from kicking a soccer ball to a football,” Thessing said.

Melanie said her teammates are supportive, respectful and welcoming. In fact, Melanie said, her favorite thing about her new sport is the new friendships. She has received similar support from the student body as a whole.

This is surely encouraging to those coming up in the ranks. There

are three female football players at the junior high level in Fort Smith.

When asked about the challenges in this new season, Melanie said, at first, she wondered what others were thinking about her and how she would be received. She used that pressure as her motivation.

Drive and determination seem to be a theme in Melanie’s life. She not only plays soccer and football, but basketball, as well. This has presented yet another obstacle.

“Probably the biggest challenge is actually getting to practice because of my other sports obligations,” she said. Right now, she practices with the football team once a week and right before games. There are two senior kickers ahead of her, but she continues to work hard because she knows her time is coming and she wants to be ready.

This is exactly the attitude Thessing recognized and admires in Melanie. “She’s a great girl. I am so impressed with how she’s handled herself,” he said.

Thessing isn’t the only one. Dr. Darren McKinney, Fort Smith Public Schools athletic director, is proud of what Melanie and the other young women in the district are bringing to these programs.

“I think this is a great opportunity for the girls. They have accepted the challenge of playing football and are succeeding. It speaks volumes to their drive, commitment, hard work and determination,” McKinney said.

Melanie said she hopes to be an inspiration, sending a positive message that perceived limitations shouldn’t hold people back.

“Just because it’s a male-dominated sport doesn’t mean a female can’t be a part of it. It’s a lot of pressure, but it’s worth it,” she said. “I want kids to see that they can work hard and do what they put their minds to.”

He had a boat, he had the time and his heart said go

A

s pictures and updates of the Hurricane Harvey damage came scrolling across Trey Tounzen’s telephone, he felt compelled to act. The Van Buren native had just given his notice at work and had two weeks off before starting his new job. A post from a lady stuck on a roof with her 5-week old baby, asking for help, prompted Trey to use his days off to help others.

“I thought, if that were my sister and little niece, what would I do to rescue them? I have the equipment and I have the time right now,” he said.

Within just a few hours, Trey had his bag packed and his boat loaded. He enlisted the help of his longtime friend Wesley Nash and stepfather Danny, who served as the navigator, and headed for Texas. They didn’t know exactly where they were needed or how they could help, but they knew they could so something.

“You know how when you are heading to the beach and you come over a hill and, all of a sudden, there it is, you see the ocean? That’s how it was with the water there, seeing the flooding,” recalled Trey.

When they first arrived in Spring, Texas, the crew found several boats already on scene.

They joined the efforts, helping to rescue 16 people from an apartment complex. At one point, they were in 15 feet of water and Trey’s boat got hung up on one of the evacuee’s vehicles.

The next day, Aug. 30, they drove through to Port Arthur, where they were among some of the first rescuers in town.

“I literally backed the boat off the interstate into the water,” explained Trey. They were quickly flagged down to a nursing home. There, they helped prepare residents for evacuation, handing out life vests with each individual’s name and medications listed on them. The team also helped get residents out of the standing water, lifting them onto tables and any other higher surface they could find, he said.

Tens of thousands of Texas residents were forced to evacuate their homes after Hurricane Harvey hit in late August.

(Aug. 27). The water was deeper than the toilets. It was the hardest thing I have ever seen in my life,” he said.

One of the things that stood out most to Trey was how so many people, even those who suffered great loss, wanted to do their part to help others.

“Some we would rescue would then ask, ‘What can we do?’

One guy came along and started helping us, and we didn’t know him at all. Some other people came walking up and started handing out cups of Spanish rice. Everyone was just doing what they could.”

Trey used Facebook to let his wife and family know they were safe, as cell service was difficult in many places. Word soon spread of their efforts and shortly thereafter, Trey received a call from CNN. He was interviewed twice by the national media outlet, sharing about the scenes they were encountering.

“It was a little crazy. They called me at midnight and I hadn’t had any sleep.” CNN broadcast several of the pictures Trey had posted on social media, giving viewers a glimpse into the heartbreaking aftermath of the hurricane.

Trey gives all credit to the Lord.

“There were so many God-things about all of this, including me just being able to go. Having the time off is really rare for me.”

He also believes God guided them in their efforts, leading them to folks in need. Trey finds himself at a loss trying to explain the impact it all had on him. “It is hard to convey … there are just no words.”

Food Bank makes a short-fall fund drive to continue providing nutritious, free food

W

hen food comes into the River Valley Regional Food Bank in Fort Smith, it arrives in bulk: large cartons and cases loaded by forklifts into its enormous warehouse.

It goes out stacked on pallets, too, but in smaller loads borne by many more kinds of vehicles: by pickup, van, trailer or even carload to the many and varied locations where nonprofits, churches, senior centers, schools and other agencies provide food directly to individuals and families facing food insecurity, through food pantries or prepared meals.

The Food Bank is set up like the warehouse of a grocery chain, Sam’s Club or Walmart grocery distribution center. The difference is, there’s no cash register – only a scale to keep track of each load’s weight.

This year, the food bank is on track to give away 8 million pounds of food, said director Mike Ichniowski, who took over operations in April, “probably the highest amount in the 29 years of operation.”

Food insecurity and hunger may be almost invisible, but as measured by government and independent researchers, it affects more than 51,000 people in Crawford, Sebastian, Franklin, Scott, Polk, Logan, Johnson and Yell counties.

Some 28 percent of that number are children – 21,500 kids.

Obtaining millions of tons in food is the daily work of the food bank, which fortunately has many reliable, generous corporate donors, Ichniowski said.

“Donations are currently going very well as great partners like Walmart, OK Foods, Aldi, Sam’s Club, McKee Foods, Pepsi and many, many others donate food regularly,” he said.

“Recently, large food drives and collections by Cox Cable’s community concert, Arvest, the U.S Marshals, the U.S. Marshals Museum, TSA, Pro-Pak, TV 40/29 and the ArkansasOklahoma State Fair – and more, have contributed tens of thousands of pounds of food.” The food bank does purchase some necessary foods not donated.

The food bank is a United Way beneficiary, through funds and volunteers, he said. It also receives a state grant.

“This drive in October and November is to raise $30,000,” he said. These funds will go toward upgrading the warehouse to accommodate more food and more varied food.

With expanded refrigerated areas, the food bank can accept more fresh foods, for example, and avoid waste of donated fruits and other perishables.

“Change can make a change,” Ichniowski quipped. Small collection boxes will be placed in about 20 local restaurants along with several of his “Hunger Monster” displays, which kids love to feed with coins.

Donate online easily through Pay Pal. The website rvfoodbank.org has a “donate” button and contributions can be made on Facebook, as well, he said. Mail contributions to River Valley Regional Food Bank, P.O. Box 180070, Fort Smith, Ark. 72903.

Although the Food Bank does not serve individuals, it certainly connects anyone in need to a local source of food. Ichniowski was touched by a mom who came in recently. It was the first time she had ever asked for food assistance and she represents a working person who had stretched her budget as far as she could, but had fallen a little short.

“Her son was dressed in his baseball uniform and he had a game that evening, but she had simply run out of money for the week and had no way to feed him before his game,” he said.

She had budgeted for gas to go to work and school; she had her son ready for his game but ends weren’t meeting. The staff immediately located the nearest provider, called ahead and the young player was able to have his supper and play in the game. The groceries she obtained would stretch them to her next paycheck. This, he said, is the definition of “food insecurity.”

The food bank website also has a search page to help anyone put in their location and find a nearby source of food support.

corporate givers are all used as effectively as possible to get healthy, nutritious food to the plates of those in need. While this food bank is well-supported, it can never stop seeking new donations of food and other support, he said.

Besides contributing to this OctoberNovember drive, Ichniowski encourages the public to learn more about the food bank.

Groups can schedule a tour or volunteer hours.

Students who need community service hours can help and learn about inventory control and warehousing, he pointed out. All help is welcome in the fight against hunger.

The River Valley Food Bank is a program of the Crawford-Sebastian Community Development Council, a community action agency.

Neumeier Fall Festival marks season’s arrival festival with roots four decades deep has grown into a two-day event to satisfy the eyes, ears, stomach and soul. From pony rides to pumpkin bread and eggs rolls to orchids, the outdoor event, held on the grounds of Neumeier Nursery & Greenhouses, is the perfect way to celebrate the arrival of fall. The festival will be 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Oct. 7 and noon-4 p.m. Oct. 8.

Live music, food vendors and the accidental gathering of friends will cause you to pull up a chair and stay awhile.

Bill and Jody Neumeier are approaching their 50th year operating the business; it opened in 1968. They began doing the festival with help from family and friends in the 1980s as a way to draw attention to their nursery, which is tucked away on the city’s north side.

“The first year, we had friends that used to come and help us with it,” Jody said. “We would rent from Coca-Cola Bottling Co. one of their trailers and Bill’s mother and my mother would get in that trailer and make hot dogs and chili.”

“After the festival, we would have a big dinner. My housekeeper at that time made tamales from scratch and that’s what we would eat,” she said. “Everyone looked forward to coming and working festival because they could have Annie’s tamales!”

The festival has grown to cover more and more of the nursery grounds and offering a larger variety of booths.

The mums will be in full color just in time for the fall festival Oct. 7-8.

“I’m really excited because this year, we’re going to have a section just for kids,” Jody said.

“We’ve got pony rides for the kids and Arkansas Game and Fish Commission is coming. They’ve got coloring books and other activities for the kids to do.”

Vendors with wares geared toward children also will be located in the area, making it convenient for young families to shop. The Northside High School softball team will offer face painting.

And pumpkins. Don’t forget the pumpkins.

Every size, shape and color will be stacked and scattered over the nursery grounds, making a perfect background for photos. Festivalgoers are welcome to take their own or the Neumeiers will have a photographer onsite.

Buddy Berry will be set up in the pumpkin patch to take photos that will be available online for downloading, something new this year.

“I do it because I love it. I love the fact that I can pull it off and make it work,” Jody said.

Halloween Hi Hat Cupcakes Cupcakes 1 box of white cake mix, plus ingredients needed to prepare 1 box of dark chocolate cake mix, plus ingredients needed to prepare Frosting 10 large egg whites 3 cups granulated sugar 1 tsp. vanilla Orange gel food coloring 2 cups semi sweet chocolate chips 4 tbsp. vegetable oil or shortening Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line 24 cupcake tins with liners and set aside.

Prepare each cake mix according to box directions. Keep in mind that since you are using two boxes, you will only need half of each to make 24 cupcakes. Place half of each prepared batter in a gallon size freezer bag – extra batter can be frozen until needed.

Color white cake batter desired shade of orange. Place a large spoonful of each batter into prepared cupcake tins, filling to about 2/3 full. Bake until tops spring back when lightly touched in the center, about 15 minutes.

Let cupcakes cool completely on a wire rack before frosting.

Frosting: In a large, grease-free metal mixing bowl, whisk egg whites and sugar over a pot of simmering water. Continue simmering the water and whisking the mixture until it forms a syrup – get a bit between your fingers and rub together. If you still feel coarse granules of sugar, cook for a while longer.

Once you have a thick, smooth syrup, remove from heat and place bowl on your mixer. Using the whisk attachment, beat on low for 5 minutes. Add vanilla and orange gel color and increase speed to high and beat for five minutes more. The frosting should form stiff peaks.

Using a large piping tip, pipe frosting high on cupcakes.

Place in the freezer for about 10 minutes while you prepare chocolate coating.

Chocolate Coating: In a microwave-safe bowl, microwave chocolate chips and oil/shortening, stopping to stir every 30 seconds until smooth. Dip cupcakes in chocolate, frosting side down. Allow excess to drip off, then place on plate. Store in refrigerator to keep chocolate coating firm.

GHOST CUPCAKE CONES Cupcake Cones Favorite cake mix, plus ingredients needed to prepare Flat-bottomed ice cream cones Buttercream Frosting 11⁄2 cups (3 sticks) salted butter, slightly softened 1/3 cup heavy cream 51⁄2 cups powdered sugar 1 tbsp. vanilla extract 3 tbsp. light corn syrup Prepare cake mix according to package directions. Fill flat-bottomed cones that have been set in a muffin tin 2/3 full. Bake according to package instructions and let cool.

Frosting: In the bowl of your mixer, beat butter, heavy cream and extract on low until blended. With the mixer on low, slowly add powdered sugar until just barely mixed.

Add corn syrup and beat on high for one minute. If frosting is too thick, add a bit more cream until desired consistency is reached. Fold in desired amount of coloring.

Use jumbo decorating piping tip to create soft-serve ice cream look. Add two black sugar pearls (or use frosting) and a bit of black frosting for a mouth. * Divide your frosting into three colors and pipe candy corns, too!

SWEET & SALTY CANDY CORN BARS 1 (10.5 oz) bag Fritos 1 cup light corn syrup 1 cup granulated sugar 1 cup peanut butter 2/3 cup candy corn Butter a 7x11 or 8x8 pan and set aside.

Pour Fritos in a large bowl, using a wooden spoon to break into large pieces.

In a heavy saucepan over medium heat, heat corn syrup and sugar to boiling, stirring occasionally. Once boiling, remove from heat and add peanut butter, stirring until smooth.

Pour mixture into bowl with Fritos, stirring to coat.

Press mixture (buttering your hands helps) into prepared pan. Sprinkle candy corns on top and gently press into surface.

Let bars cool to room temperature before serving.

Ahhh, pawpaws Pickin’ up pawpaws, put ’em in your pocket, way down yonder in the pawpaw patch

I

f you are old enough or are a history buff, you may be familiar with the lyrics of this folk song, but probably not the subject.

I first encountered pawpaw trees on an incredibly beautiful and devastatingly difficult hike on top of Mount Nebo State Park near Dardanelle. They are a fascinating tree that bears fruit, actually the largest tropical fruit in the United States. Yes, tropical fruit in Arkansas and nationwide; about half the states have these trees.

I spoke with Mount Nebo State Park Interpreter Jackie Rupp about the origins of the tropical tree on top of the mountain. Jackie reminded me of Capt. Joseph Evins, the entrepreneur who built a colony in the 1870s that evolved into a summer hotel and orchard on the top of the mountain.

Look for pawpaw growing in moist, low soils; a large shrub or small tree, it often forms thickets.

My interest piqued, I spoke with Gerald Klingaman, a horticulture professor for 32 years at the University of Arkansas and current director of operations at the Botanical Gardens of the Ozark.

“We have pawpaw trees in our Ozark Native Garden,” he said.

I asked if the pawpaw would be a tree I might recommend to local ornamental gardeners and Gerald, as he asked me to call him, exclaimed, “Oh, yes! I have one in my backyard! The tree has beautiful flowers in spring with a pleasant fragrance and lovely fall foliage.”

Asimina Tribola, the Latin name for the pawpaw, once was a staple in the Native American diet. In 1541, while on his travels to find the Fountain of Youth, Hernando De Soto wrote of this native American tree. The Lewis

and Clark Expedition survived for a time on the pawpaw fruit. Thomas Jefferson grew pawpaws at his Monticello estate and, when he became minister to France in 1786, he had pawpaw seeds shipped over to his Parisian friends.

Pawpaws are a great tree for a shady garden, often having much more attractive fall color in an understory location.

Of course, you know I love a good nerdy festival. I found an interesting pawpaw festival in Ohio, complete with a pawpaw-eating contest, biggest pawpaw (This year’s winner was a whopping 1.4 pounds!) and a pawpaw cookoff with winning entrants ranging from Wake-You-Up Pawpaw Oat Breakfast Bar to the elegant Pawpaw Princess Cake. But that’s not all!

Weasel Boy Brewing Co. brews Pawpaw Beer. Ahh, yes.

So, why do we not have a pawpaw in every pot? Seems pawpaws get ripe real fast and don’t have a long shelf life. Therefore, the modern grocery store is not inclined to sell them. However, many nurseries are cultivating superior trees for the commercial and home ornamental market.

I am excited to get out and forage my own pawpaw tree and put a pawpaw in my pocket!

Fruit is a 3- to 5-inch-long berry that is green when young then becomes dark and wrinkled when ripe in October or November. Ripe fruit has a flesh-like custard and tastes a lot like bananas. The bark of pawpaw trees is light ash to dark brown, thin, smooth and, with age, becomes warty with blotches.

Dwight Yoakam opens Temple Live concerts OCTOBER Dwight Yoakam has never fit in a music industry box, an outlier from the start, but has been welcomed as authentic in rock, country and, now, bluegrass circles by the greatest in each genre. He skipped Nashville and started out on punk bills playing hillbilly music when bands like Los Lobos or X were also on the bill. He recorded a hit with his idol Buck Owens and was the first country act that broke into MTV. While recording a string of gold and platinum albums and singles, he also pursued film roles as an actor to critical acclaim.

Some 30 years after “Guitars, Cadillacs,” Yoakum assembled the cream of bluegrass to release “Swimming Pools, Movie Stars,” a bluegrass album that also has a cover of Prince’s “Purple Rain.” He just does it his way.

This is the first major show for the new venture Temple Live, a venue created by the restoration of a 1928 Masonic Temple. The concert will be held in its Egyptian-themed theater. An all-ages show. Oct. 4 UAFS Symphonic Band Concert A concert of the UAFS Symphonic Band with guest artists is part of Season of Entertainment 37. The band is under the direction of Dr. Alexandra Zacharella, director of bands and associate professor of low brass.

The program includes works by John Phillip Sousa, George Grainger, and other works, including a musical journey through New Orleans. Featured guest artists Patrick Sheridan and Harry Watters will perform.

Sheridan, a tubist for the world-renowned Jupiter Performing Artists, and Watters, a prominent New Orleans trombonist, will also present a series of masterclasses from 4-6 p.m. Oct. 3 in the ArcBest Corp. Murder & Mayhem Haunted Trolley Tour adds more to the haunting with progressive dinner OCTOBER

The popular “Murder and Mayhem” Haunted Trolley Tour features haunted and gruesome stories from years past, told from the trolley as it tours haunted areas of Fort Smith. Judge and Mrs. Isaac C. Parker, portrayed by Floyd and Sue Robison, narrate the tour, along with a host of colorful characters.

A Murder and Mayhem Haunted Trolley Tour and Progressive Dinner is available at 6 p.m. Oct. 26 with the trolley sponsored by First National Bank. In partnership with the Fort Smith Museum of History, the Bonneville House and the Clayton House, the tour begins at 6 p.m. at the Fort Smith Museum of History for complimentary cocktails, hors d’oeuvre and ghost stories. A 7:30 p.m. dinner stop at the Bonneville House features a choice of spaghetti and meatballs or chicken parmigiana sponsored by Taliano's. The Clayton House will offer dessert before the tour concludes back at the Fort Smith Museum of History at approximately 9:15 p.m. Hors d’oeuvre and dessert sponsored by Legacy Grill. The regular Murder and Mayhem Haunted Trolley tours on Oct. 27, 28 and 31 begin at the Fort Smith Museum of History at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. with complimentary Halloween treats, drinks and ghost stories. The regular tours are $40 per person for guests 21 years of age and older.

As the trolley winds its way through downtown Fort Smith, the Belle Grove Historic District and other areas of the city, riders thrill to gruesome historic facts and eerie local legends. Real haunted houses are pointed out and their dark secrets revealed. Hear stories of an especially nasty hanging, a murder that caused Fort Smithians to lock their doors, a bloody love triangle and Miss Annie Amos, who is still with us today! The narrative is as colorful as Fort Smith's past. Meet a variety of characters who make the stories come to life. Reservations are required and available now. Kay Aclin will exhibit impressionistic and figurative explorations of day-today happenings. Aclin’s paintings transform normal life into shining revelations of color and texture. Oct. 6-Dec 31 Momoyo Torimitsu: Somehow, I Don’t Feel Comfortable Momoyo Torimitsu’s gigantic inflatable bunnies, entitled “Somehow I don’t feel comfortable,” are a reflection of contemporary social angst and modern popular iconography. The installation depicts two bunnies slumped in opposite corners in a sad, lonely manner – entirely filled with air, erect and purposeful – however enclosed in a space that does not accommodate bunnies, emotionally and physically. Poteau Balloonfest Fun in the sky and down on earth, too

OCTOBER Each year at Poteau Balloon Fest time, the festivals’ balloon pilots and

hope for the optimum atmospheric conditions that will float the 20-21 spectators colorful hot air balloons high aloft over LeFlore County, in the early morning hours and sometimes in late afternoon. But it is certain that festival goers will have plenty more to see and do.

Entertainment down on earth includes a carnival, many games for kids, a Mud Run, Mud Races, Burnout Competition, BMX demonstrations, a petting zoo with camels and a kangaroo, live music, a Little Miss & Mr. Balloon Fest Pageant, K-9 demonstrations and a bull riding competition.

Balloons fly, weather permitting, at sunrise and its a target-rich environment for photographers. The balloon pilots light the tied-down balloons in the evening for a colorful “Balloon Glow” that also makes wonderful photographs possible. Tethered balloon rides are $10 per person with age, height and weight restrictions. Participants must be tall enough to see over the basket (approximately 4 feet) and pilots have final approval. Helicopter rides are also available for a fee.

The carnival opens at 6 p.m. Oct. 19. Festival gates open at noon Oct. 20 and 9 a.m. Oct. 21.

Chaffee Crossing Annual Veterans Day Parade NOVEMBER Each year, the annual Veterans Day

Parade through the Chaffee Crossing Historic District becomes more of a treasured area tradition for participants and spectators.

Floats, marching bands, military vehicles, representatives of every branch of the U.S. Armed Forces, antique vehicles and social and civic clubs participate and form a longer parade with each passing year.

The parade and celebration seem fitting in the historic district where many original buildings of Fort Chaffee still stand, including the military barbershop where Pvt. Elvis Presley got his regulation G.I. haircut, as did thousands of other servicemen that passed through this base. The adjacent Fort Chaffee Military Museum tells more of the story of this World War IIera Army base.

Register now by contacting the Fort Chaffee Redevelopment Authority to receive line-up information. Or just take a lawn chair and enjoy the role of spectator under the many shade trees along the route. Free. The parade begins at noon. To attend the parade, arrive early and enter Chaffee Crossing from Arkansas 22. Turn left on Taylor Avenue and right on Terry Street to find a parking spot along the route. Shuttles will give rides from other lots.

Nov. 4 17th Annual Huntington's Walk of Hope A non-timed 5k walk in support of local Huntington’s Disease patients. Sponsor tables in the community building will share information. Bid on prizes at a silent auction. Monies raised go for testing and clinical research. More than 75 local people have been helped by testing and participation in clinical research studies to find a cure and alleviate symptoms of Huntington’s Disease. There are currently four clinical trials going on in the area. A support group meets monthly on the third Thursday at 6 p.m. at the Fort Smith main library and is open to anyone. Nov. 4 Hike Mount Magazine State Park TrailBlazers Hiking Club will hike at Mount Magazine State Park. Anyone is welcome to go along with the hiking club. Starting from the visitors center, the group will hike the North Rim Trail, visit Cameron Bluff and go to the top of Signal Hill, where hikers will be standing on the highest point in Arkansas. The 30th annual Taste of Fort Smith will offer a sumptious spread Oct. 24 at the Fort Smith Convention Center. The event with lunch and dinner sessions is a sampling of the area’s finest foods and beverages served in a buffet that rings the enormous exhibit hall.

With a $15 admission, diners may choose their own delicious selections.

Restaurants, caterers, food trucks and food and beverage purveyors not only serve their most tempting specialities, they also compete for best presentation of their booths.

The menu includes appetizers, salads, entrees, desserts and fantastic baked goods with a wide choice of coffees, beverages and other treats. More than 35 vendors are expected.

Lunch hours are 11 a.m.-1 p.m. and dinner is from 5-7 p.m. Tickets are available at the door or in advance from First National Bank locations – downtown, Central Mall, Stonewood Village, Chaffee Crossing and Brooken Hill.

Taste of Fort Smith’s popularity has kept it successful for 30 years as a main fundraiser of the Altrusa International Foundation of Fort Smith, also known as Altrusa Club. Each year the club chooses beneficiaries of the charitable event, with an emphasis on literacy.

Over Taste of Fort Smith’s history, more than $390,000 has been distributed to 33 local non-profit organizations.

This year’s goal is to raise more than $18,000 to be contributed to the Literacy Council of Fort Smith, Crawford County Volunteers for Literacy, Fort Smith Public Library, Scott-Sebastian Regional Library, the Sebastian County Humane Society and the Curt, Cliff & Opal Young Home. $15 per person, 6 and older.
