We are astonished to present the 200th issue of Entertainment Fort Smith magazine. Who counts the number of issues published? We do!

As a journalism major, I do not possess the ability to multiply the quantity of all the issues produced since our first in August 2000. That equation has more than one step, so I’m out.

Let’s just roughly estimate a heck of a lot of ’em.

As a dual English/journalism major, I admit comparing 200 monthly issues to this city attaining its 200th year mixes quantity with time. But I want to, by golly, and I can get away with it unless the copy editor, Donna Payne, overrules me.

So, in 200 unique issues, we have done our best to hold up a mirror, gently, to reflect our hometown and region.

With the help of hundreds of contributors, we have presented a comprehensive calendar of events for 200 different months. No two are alike because of the diversity and imagination of people who live here. Y’all are always inventing something new.

Thanks very much to the very hard work of our ace salesperson, Linda Gilham – executive wonderwoman – this issue is supported by many loyal, longtime businesses who communicate with you in these pages. The best businesses.

Our feature section this month focuses on Chaffee Crossing and the people who have helped it “grow up” since the land was returned by the government to we, the people. The magazine and the base conversion have evolved in generally the same two decades. It is interesting to observe.

These aren’t meant to be business stories. You will find few numbers, statistics or dollar signs.

We are intrigued with the people and the culture they are creating in a new part of town.

It was wonderful to talk with four medical students who have moved to Fort Smith to attend the Arkansas College of Osteopathic Medicine. How touching to hear them tell us that anonymous area residents are blessing them with spontaneous acts of kindness and affection.

And now for something completely different: Coleman’s vision of The Hub about to rise haffee Crossing is growing up, in every sense of the word. Its earliest neighborhoods have been “home” to many for almost a decade and its careful intention to create a mix of residential, commercial, industrial and recreational activities has come true.

At every step since the former military base became a new part of the cities of Fort Smith and Barling, developer Rod Coleman, through his ERC companies, has helped shape its future. ERC is the largest residential property developer in Chaffee Crossing.

Now, Coleman’s single most forward-thinking idea is about to become real. The Hub, located at the significant intersection of RA Young Drive and Wells Lake Road, has its concept in its name – a center.

An urban lifestyle Imagine a greenscaped plaza at its heart, surrounded by three-story townhouses and apartment homes on the floor above upscale stores. In the plaza is an inviting restaurant with large windows overlooking it.

It will be a neighborhood unlike any other in Fort Smith.

What it will be is a style of living that is current and desired in larger cities all over. The Hub will offer a coveted, convenient urban lifestyle.

Kathy Coleman, Rod’s wife, easily pictures herself at one of those pleasant tables relaxing with their friends, having strolled over with her husband from their Hub townhouse. Perhaps they would be meeting friends who live in a traditional home in the nearby, gated Providence neighborhood.

She embraces the idea of living as a mature couple, whether still working or retired, in a spacious home but with a low-maintenance lifestyle, within steps of shopping, dining and a pleasant walking trail.

“Couples our age, who are downsizing, tell me they think it will be cool to live near other empty nesters,” said Kathy. “I look forward to it.”

Building on the cutting edge The Hub, where dirt work is under way, likely will be the first of its kind in Fort Smith. Why take the leap to do something so new? Because it is the way of the future, Rod Coleman believes.

“On the corners, there are two buildings that have commercial and office tenants on the bottom and apartments on the top,” he said, pointing to the site plans. “In the middle is a restaurant with 2,500 square feet beside it, same size, that is an outdoor terrace with trees and lights. It’s shared space.”

Around that center, “We’re building 23 attached townhouses, from 1,500 to 2,600 square feet. With elevators,” he emphasized. “We’re going for a single person or couple with no kids – maybe like Kathy and I – because we now have the ride to go all three stories without having to walk up the stairs.”

Voices from the future All property developers have to listen avidly to all kinds of people, as a requirement of their profession, to try to predict what future users of their projects will want – where and how they will seek to live. They also travel to observe trends in other cities and pay attention to the ideas of prominent “futurists,” the reputable theorists, in addition to other city planning experts.

Twenty years ago, the idea of a community growing up at what had been federally held, military land miles east of Fort Smith proper sounded “out there,” Coleman pointed out. ERC took a risk to get into the then-unusual concept of Chaffee Crossing. The company started earliest with traditional residential development.

“People are still stuck on that 75-by-150 lot, with the picket fence, a dog, three kids, a bicycle,” he said, “and that is not a bad thing,” he added, with emphasis. The Colemans’ daughter, Elizabeth Voris, and her physician husband are an example. A traditional home with many bedrooms and a large yard is exactly the lifestyle they preferred. Dr. Justin Voris also chose to build his medical practice for the Chaffee Crossing area, on Massard Road. They live in one of the first neighborhoods ERC created, Elizabeth said. “Plus, I step out of my door onto our trails system, which we love.”

The future-thinking master planning of the Fort Chaffee Regional Authority paid off in the creation of the walking/biking trail system. Today, residents of all the neighborhoods of Chaffee Crossing can now, or will soon, walk or pedal to its beautiful River Valley Nature Center, a golf course, ball fields, a hillside amphitheater, Ben Geren Regional Park and throughout the forested area with more than one beautiful lake and city park. ERC and all its fellow developers saw the future and bought into that planning.

Now, he’s listening to the lifestyle preferred by the 300 medical students at the young Arkansas College of Osteopathic Medicine, Coleman explained.

“We’re interviewing them, we’re listening to what they say,” he said.

What these future doctors and other local young adult professionals describe definitely includes the lifestyle of The Hub, he said.

“What I am finding in interviewing kids at the med school – some of them are coming from bigger cities and they tell us a lot – we ask them about things like prices from our (potential) retail tenants,” he explained. “We ask, would you pay $6 for a latte? The answer is yes – but within a certain kind of atmosphere.”

“The Hub is going to create three things they want: to live, work and play. There’s a huge common area down the middle for all these people to share, whether they live inside it or are shoppers. The new trail is coming right to it. You’ll be able to walk on the trail, over to the school and connect to the city trail system,” he described. “You would hope people would sit out on their balconies and decks – it’s community, community, community that everyone wants.”

The Arkansas Colleges of Health Education, parent of the medical school, recently broke ground on a similar complex of commerce and living.

Both will be what the municipal Fort Smith planners define as “Planned Zoning Districts” with guidelines about how they are designed.

The Hub’s homes have patios and balconies that share a common green.

Seeing the vision completed “Within the next five years” is when Coleman foresees a full maturity of Chaffee Crossing, with regard to future ERC projects. “The Hub is kind of the last project we foresaw in the beginning,” he said. (On nearby Wells Lake Road, there will be a 30-acre neighborhood of homes in an ERC development built at the same time.)

His fellow developers are building out some of their last major endeavors, as well, he said. Teamed with the cities and FCRA, Chaffee Crossing will fully be a part of Fort Smith, but will keep a distinctive identity.

Partly, that will be because of risk-taking and innovative development.

Coleman said he has visited but not yet lived in a place like The Hub will be. “But, I am betting that it will light a spark,” he said.

Med students and the community are enjoying a mutual affection

There’s something nice happening too often to be a fluke: Medical students of Arkansas College of Osteopathic Medicine are falling in love with this city – and vice versa.

Five ARCOM students shared heart-warming encounters with locals that may influence them to live here after graduation.

A favor done for Dania Abu-Jubara and her twin brother, also a second-year student, convinced them to choose ARCOM. It happened on the day of their admission interview in early 2017.

“We woke up very early for 8 a.m. interviews.

There were four inches of snow. We had not rented a car. We were trying to find a taxi or an Uber,” she recalled. “We were just panicking in the hotel lobby.

The receptionist came over asked if we were OK. “He called someone to cover for him. Then, he took us in his own car. He took out the children’s car seats and said, ‘I’m going to take you to school!’” They tried to protest, she said.

“He said, ‘No, you are the future doctors of Arkansas. I want you to succeed and I’m going to take you.’ He dropped us here. We don’t know how to repay this guy, he’s amazing,” Dania said.

“It stuck to us. All the faculty here is extremely nice and were so excited we were here. We didn’t feel that at any other medical school. This is actual Southern hospitality. We decided we are staying here,” she recalled.

Tall, former Ferris State University basketball player Dan Chilcote, a firstyear med student, was in a Walmart check-out line, dressed in an ARCOM T-shirt when a woman cut around his 6-foot-7 frame. If he’d had a ball, she might have gotten the steal from the scholarship athlete. “She stepped between me and the cashier and paid my grocery bill. It wasn’t cheap either, it was 50 or 60 bucks.” He tried to stop her. “I said, ‘You don’t need to do that,’” he said. “She said, ‘Oh honey, you’re doing the greatest thing ever by being here for us. We’re so excited to have you.’”

“It’s different here,” said the Michigan native. “Some of it has been very helpful for me. I tend to do things very fast. Coming down here and seeing how slow things move, it has made me slow down. People are much, much more genuine. You don’t get yes, sirs and yes, ma’ams up north. It’s nice.”

Shanell Gray felt at home quickly – she’s from Inola, Okla., and attended Oklahoma universities for her bachelor’s and master’s degrees.

“My dad has a cowboy ministry there. He, my mom and my two brothers have a family businesses training horses. I grew up with ranching and rodeoing,” she said.

What she loves here is the chance to serve, which she found on a mission to Peru last summer, through Mercy Fort Smith. She spent two years after undergrad school with the Campus Crusade for Christ on evangelical missions. Her husband has a criminology degree and works as a child abuse investigator with the Department of Human Services. The two held a shoe drive for foster children. “We can see putting down roots here,” she said.

She’s loved that the school has given students to volunteer in a nursing home. In a coffee shop, local volunteer Casey Milspaugh introduced himself and Dan Chilcote suggested she connect with schools. Now, Gray is planning a health fair for Morrison Elementary. The city has met her servant spirit with open arms.

Holding back tears is hard right now for Catherine Buell, who said she has been “overwhelmed with amazing kindness” since entering ARCOM. She decided to become a doctor after caring for her mother during her final illness. Her mom’s neurosurgeons encouraged her because Buell educated herself so much during the experience. She’s excited, but entering at an older age than other students is daunting, she said.

“When I interviewed, everyone was waiting on the steps outside. The dean welcomed me. I thought, ‘Wow! You might as well pull up a rocking chair and have some sweet tea,’” she said. “I had to move here quickly (from Washington). A financial aid person offered to bring her husband’s truck and help me move in. I mentioned my car not working – someone in security said, ‘My husband’s a mechanic. Let me help you out.’ One of my professors emailed me and then asked me in person if he could help.”

She surveyed many other schools. “I have lived in a lot of big cities and places where community doesn’t exist,” she said. “That’s why I chose this school. People won’t have to work too hard to get me to live here.”

Medical colleges announce a vibrant neighboring village In late August, officials broke ground and celebrated the start of a new amenity to enhance the fast-growing Arkansas Colleges of Health Education (ACHE).

Heritage Village, designed on the principle of New Urbanism, will be a town center for a residential community based on health and wellness, with commercial amenities and services. The village has been envisioned from the beginning as a significant element of the master planning for the medical education campus opened in 2017.

Two multi-floor buildings will anchor the village. Each new building will be comprised of more than 43,000 square feet, for a combined 86,000 square feet of residential and retail space.

The three-story buildings will have their top two floors designated for campus housing. This will expand available campus housing, adding 64 units to the already developed 164 units in the student housing known as The Residents. Located adjacent to the Arkansas College of Osteopathic Medicine (ARCOM), The Residents opened in July 2017 as the inaugural class of medical students arrived. Phase II opened in July to accommodate the second class of 150 students.

At street level, there will be 27,000 square feet of space available for restaurants, coffee shops and other retail businesses. Construction is expected to conclude in late spring 2019, with residential and retail space to be open in summer 2019.

At a rapid pace, the visioneers of ACHE are building facilities to realize an ambitious, thoughtful master plan that includes ARCOM, followed by a new College of Health Services for the education of

doctors of physical therapy and occupational therapy and a physician’s assistant program. Ground was broken in May for the new, $25 million college building, which will begin classes in 2020.

ACHE president Dr. Kyle Parker has said a majority of the commercial space in Heritage Village is spoken for by commercial interests such as retail and dining. Heritage Village is on 6.6 acres across the street from ARCOM and is in Barling.

They’re making paper in a big way at Chaffee Crossing

T

o describe the state-of-the-art machinery that is now steadily making “airlaid” paper at Glatfelter, the newest manufacturing facility at Chaffee Crossing in Fort Smith, start with units of “football field.”

As site director Larry Balch explains very well, not only is it gigantic, this array of equipment is kept sterile, operated mostly by automation and did we mention it’s gihungous?

What they’re making The size of the operation is something Balch can take in stride. He retired as plant director from the Georgia-Pacific Dixie Products plant in Fort Smith. But the product and production process of Glatfelter paper made at this new, $90 million facility is quite different.

Used for personal hygiene products such as diaper wipes, the paper Glatfelter produces here is called airlaid. That also is a description of the paper-making process, he explained.

Airlaid paper is formed with a mixture of raw materials: A fluff base made from Southern pine is combined with a bi-component, a blend of polyethylene and poly propylene.

“We mix the synthetic fiber with the fluff pulp in three different layers in the forming section and then put through an oven,” Balch said. “The polymers melt and attach to the fluff pulp. That’s what gives it its strength.” Enormous rolls of airlaid paper are the plant’s final product.

Rolls then are sent to outside companies to be wetted with various liquids, depending on the intended purpose of the wipe. It is then cut, perforated or folded for various styles of final packaging. One of those companies making the retail wipes is Rockline Wet Wipe Manufacturing in Booneville.

“In a traditional paper operation, huge amounts of water are used. Here, there is no water. It is airlaid,” he said. “It has some really nice characteristics.

It’s very absorbent, holds moisture and maintains strength. The airlaid paper is a very soft, very sterile and absorbent product.”

Why Glatfelter came to Chaffee Crossing “Fort Smith certainly knows what losing manufacturing jobs is about, but Chaffee Crossing is about new manufacturing coming to the area. I’ll give city fathers and the Fort Chaffee Redevelopment Authority and Chamber of Commerce credit here, they’ve been working on this for two decades,” Balch said. Like the staff he leads, he had not expected to be making a new product in a brand-new plant in 2018. He didn’t know of the company as recently as three years ago.

Through teamwork that involved state, local and regional economic development marketing, the global manufacturer was sold on setting up an advanced airlaid materials plant in what had been intended to be a Mitsubishi Power Systems plant.

CHAFFEE CROSSING “It took some people with vision to know that they could develop this area and create a lot of jobs in companies that are going to be here for a long time,” Balch said.

Creating their own work culture Balch came onboard with Glatfelter as the plant set-up was almost done. “Employees were still building the machine when I got here last October,” he said. “I never had done a start-up.

I had been at a good place, the oldest plant in Fort Smith, Dixie Cup, which started in 1947.

So to come to this newest plant with a brand new facility, assets and brand new people – was a huge challenge.”

Glatfelter had hired excellent people, Balch said. “We started making some product in late January and early February. We went into commercial production, or ‘continous mode,’ with a full four crews, 24/7, in March.” Balch said he helped to hire about half the 70 employees.

“We’ve got some former Trane employees; some from Planters, Baldor – and some who have just entered the market for the first time. We have a good, diverse crew,” he said.

“They have made our culture,” he said of the employees. “We started up in a lean approach.

Today, there are 12 people per shift, running a paper machine about the size of a football field.

It’s very automated, with a lot of process control – employees are reading data and making decisions. We want them to think, not to just punch in. We want them to help us get better and they do. We’ve been very pleased with the workforce,” he said in praise.

As a leader, Balch wants to mentor more.

Some of the employees were sent to Canada for training, then designed local training. One was made a shift leader, because she was a natural, he said.

Shift leader Tom Turner is a member of Leadership Fort Smith because the company believes in the Chamber of Commerce-led class for career and community growth.

That was done for more than convenience. It showed that Glatfelter was thinking about the future from the very beginning of the start-up.

“Probably the best story about Glatfelter is that it is about half-empty. There’s room for another paper machine. It might come in two or three years. It will absolutely happen,” Balch observed.

“When you build a paper machine, it’s going to be there a long time.”

At the crossroads of everything in Chaffee Crossing FCRA makes connections

W

hat is now the work of the Fort Chaffee Redevelopment Authority? What isn’t? its longtime director, Ivy Owen, is likely to answer. While Chaffee Crossing is “growing up,” the mission of the FCRA is still vital and ongoing.

Created by the state Legislature in 1997 to oversee the development of the 7,000 acres turned back to public use after release from service as a military base, the FCRA was charged with stewardship of the land’s value and natural resources during the transition. It serves the public interest.

In myriad ways, particularly by establishing a Master Land Use Plan with community input, the FCRA was given the responsibility to see that all its neighboring people could benefit by living, working and enjoying its natural assets – until every last acre in the area now called Chaffee Crossing was responsibly and productively used.

In a wide-ranging talk with this magazine last month, Owen and Lorie Robertson, director of marketing, showed the many kinds of work yet to come and the staff ’s deep knowledge of Chaffee Crossing’s progress. It is evident that nothing there ever stands still.

The two were relishing several August groundbreakings, including for the Arkansas Colleges of Health Education’s new Heritage Village and ERC’s The Hub at Providence development. Both will thoughtfully mix residential living and commerce according to the best ideas in contemporary urban planning and design.

These highly visible projects were going to be built now as a result of long-term efforts of the FCRA. Think zoning meetings, utilities easements, real estate laws – the FCRA staff spent years addressing those complicated factors, unseen by most citizens.

“The land use plan that Ivy and other professionals worked together to develop has been there from the beginning,” Robertson observed. “It is very complex. But the developers bought into it.”

The people and work behind Chaffee Crossing’s many successful, mature residential commercial developments are intimately familiar to them. They name off neighborhoods, streets, specific land parcels, segments of public trails and bodies of water expertly. Both know hundreds of people: real estate developers, land buyers, homeowners and business entrepreners among them – and know what those people are doing that will be significant to Chaffee Crossing.

Another enormous task the FCRA continues to undertake is to see that the Chaffee Crossing area and its people are served well with streets, roads and the best possible connecting routes to all surrounding city, state, county and interstate roads and highways. The completion of a portion of I-49 that runs from U.S. 71 to Arkansas 22 is fundamental to its future and perhaps the best accomplishment the FCRA was a part of, Owen has said many times. When the completed interstate extends north and south, it will determine an entire region’s future, he explained.

Near the FCRA headquarters at Chaffee Crossing, in the former Fort Chaffee’s old NCO Club is Body Masters Fitness & Training. CHAFFEE CROSSING More locally but also critically important, Owen said, “the city of Fort Smith’s infrastructure is keeping up with development. In August, the city let bids for the surfacing of Wells Lake Road. That’s great.”

In late 2019, a relocation project will connect Arkansas 255 with Zero Street directly, making “four lanes to Ben Geren Regional Park,” he said.

“That will help with at Massard Road and Zero.”

“In the next 12 to 18 months or so,” Robertson added, “we’ll see the addition of two lanes on Massard down to Planters Road. That will help the ArcBest traffice and the congestion at the entrances of Cisterna and Stonebrook.”

Even people who live in one the many pleasantly named neighborhoods at Chaffee Crossing probably can’t distinguish them or locate them as easily as Owen and Robertson do in casual, fast-moving conversation. On almost every wall of FCRA headquarters, maps and prospective maps line out ever-changing infrastructure ideas and projects. The maps help the geographically challenged keep up.

They are representative of many daily Chaffee Crossing users. Owen and his wife live in a residential development there. Robertson and her husband raised a family in nearby in Lavaca.

The FCRA has sought to enhance adjacent cities Barling and Fort Smith but also Greenwood, Jenny Lind, Lavaca and all surrounding and communities.

Owen and Robertson, along with the other professional and friendly staff of the FCRA, extend the same helpfulness and welcome to visitors, tourists of the Chaffee Historic District, Elvis fans, governors and officials, prospective business owners, students, bike riders, walkers and lovers of the outdoor recreation at the River Valley Nature Center. Boutique grows up with its customers as Katiebug’s adds Harper & Grace

C

hildren grow – not only taller, but in their own notions of what they like to wear for comfort and self-image.

Katiebug’s, a Maybranch Square children’s boutique, is catering to its growing young customers with an expansion called Harper & Grace. Those also are the names of owner Brittney Hall’s two children.

“The store has always gone up to size 16 and has always had a boy department but only my regular customers knew it,” Hall said. “We created a division so that everyone knows it’s not only a baby and small kids’ store.”

Children’s clothing sizes now carried are 7 to 16/18 for girls and up to 10/12 for boys.

Sizes do not correspond to ages, Hall notes.

“Kids vary in age and size. You can have a kindergartner who wears an 8/10 or a firstgrader who wears a 5/6.”

Many kids up to even seventh grade may find clothes to fit them in the expanded store, she said. “There are some tiny junior high girls that fit into our clothes.”

Parents shop for clothes appropriate to each child’s age and maturity. At some point, girls leave infant and toddler ruffles behind. And boys of any age may like to dress like their fathers.

“That’s why we carry tiny loafers,” she said, pointing out a pair that look like classic men’s Cole-Haan tasseled, leather shoes.

The boutique is known for its wide selection of newborn to toddler clothing and offers every need from beautiful christening gowns to baby dresses matched with sweet little shoes or sassy, durable outfits for active, messy toddlers.

“You can come in and get an outfit that nobody else has, without breaking a budget. I think that’s a stigma that boutiques get that isn’t correct,” she added. Especially in the Fort Smith market, Hall said she and her colleagues who operate women’s clothing boutiques have added more styles and choices for shoppers at prices comparable to those at chain retailers.

Most of all, Katiebug’s has merchandise picked by a mom who chooses apparel as if her own kids were wearing it – because they do.

SIMPLY SAUCY BACON-WRAPPED PORK LOIN 4 pounds pork loin (center roast, boneless, untied, fat and silver skin trimmed) 112⁄ tsp. kosher salt 1 tsp. black pepper (freshly ground) 1 tbsp. vegetable oil 9 slices bacon 1 cup barbecue sauce Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Sprinkle pork with salt and pepper.

Heat oil in large skillet over medium-high heat. Add pork and brown on all sides, about 6 minutes. Transfer to plate and cool for 10 minutes.

Wrap bacon slices vertically around pork roast; do not overlap bacon. Tie lengthwise and crosswise with kitchen string to hold bacon in place; tuck loose ends of bacon under string. Place on a rack in a roasting pan, tuckedbacon side down.

Roast on rack for 15 minutes. Turn pork over and reduce temperature to 350ºF and roast for 15 minutes. Remove rack and return pork to pan, tucked-end side up. Roast, turning occasionally until bacon is browned and an instant-read thermometer inserted in the center of the roast reads 145 degrees, about 50 minutes. Remove from oven and let stand for 10 minutes.

Skim fat from pan juices, leaving browned juices in pan.

Add barbecue sauce and preferred ingredient (see below) and bring to simmer over medium heat, stirring to loosen browned bits in pan; simmer 2 minutes.

Remove strings, carve pork and serve with sauce.

Sauce Options: Savory: Whisk 2 tbsp. Dijon mustard into the sauce Spicy: Stir 2 tbsp. pickled jalapenos, drained and finely chopped, into sauce Fruity: Stir 8.25 ounces can crushed pineapple, drained, into sauce Smoky: Add 1-2 minced chipotle chilies in adobo (canned) to sauce

SEARED PORK CHOPS WITH PANCETTA & ANCHOVY SAUCE 24 oz. boneless pork chops, cut 1-inch thick 1 cup pancetta, diced 4 tbsp. sweet butter, softened 1 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil 1 tsp. red pepper flakes 3 whole cloves garlic, skin intact 3 anchovy fillets, finely chopped 2 tbsp. Italian parsley, finely chopped 8 thyme sprigs (Pick leaves from two sprigs and leave the remaining whole) 1 lemon Kosher salt Pepper Preheat large cast iron skillet on high. Dry the pork and season with salt and pepper.

In a bowl, mix four tablespoons of sweet butter with chopped anchovies, parsley and chili flakes.

Reserve half the butter mixture for finishing the sauce; refrigerate to firm up.

Heat oil and pancetta in a second large cast iron skillet over medium-high heat. Cook until the pancetta is rendered and crispy. Remove from the pan and set aside.

Place chops in the first skillet and cook until golden browned, about 2 minutes per side; keep pan very hot.

Dollop half the butter mixture over top of each chop, letting excess run into skillet. Add garlic cloves and whole thyme sprigs and baste the pork.

Position the pork away from you, in the upper half of the pan, so it won't interfere with your spooning. Drizzle the hot oil and butter mixture over each chop. Keep basting following a circular movement with the spoon until the meat becomes brown and crispy. Cook the chops to an internal temperature of 130 to 140 degrees.

Transfer chops to a serving platter to rest and remove the whole cloves of garlic and thyme sprigs.

Add the rest of cooled butter to the pan and whisk in rapidly to thicken sauce. Add fresh thyme and lemon zest; add salt and pepper to your liking.

Top each chop with a spoonful of sauce and serve hot.

Duke University Chapel Organist Christopher Jacobson and Mass Choir to give concert SEPT

A noted organist will perform and lead a glorious mass choir made up of singers from four local churches in a special benefit concert.

Christopher Jacobson is Duke University Chapel organist, as well as the organist at Duke Divinity School. A versatile concert organist, he is also a conductor, accompanist, guest clinician and teacher. He founded and directs the Duke Evensong Singers, oversees the training of organ scholars and is responsible for the organ playing at all services. He is in demand nationally and internationally as a conductor and organist. This summer, he has conducted the Duke Evensong Singers in choral residencies at Gloucester Cathedral and Westminster Abbey.

One of the Evensong Singers featured will be Fort Smith native Dr. Elizabeth Terry Joyner, soprano. She is the daughter of Rex and Ginger Terry. Her recent solo appearances include performance with the Raleigh Bach Solists, Concert Singers of Cary, Mallarmé Chamber Players and the North Carolina Baroque Orchestra. Joyner holds degrees in Elizabeth Joyner piano performance and German from the University of Arkansas; studied music as a Fulbright Scholar and the University of Leipzig and completed her Ph.D. in musicology from Duke University. Joyner also operates a thriving music studio in Chapel Hill, N.C., where she lives with her husband and two sons.

The mass choir will be made up of singers from First Presbyterian, Goddard United Methodist, St John’s Episcopal and First United Methodist churches.

Admission is free, with an appeal to donate to Antioch for Youth & Families, the local food ministry founded by Charolette Tidwell. Free.

From his Dove Award-winning gospel albums to Southern rock anthems and epic country hits, few have left a bigger mark on American music than Charlie Daniels in his 60-year career.

In a recent phone interview, the 80-yearold road warrior said, “I just play music.”

He was a seasoned musician and songCharlie Daniels writer who had played behind Bob Dylan as a session artist long before “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” got a Grammy for Best Country Vocal Performance by a Group in 1979, as well as Single of the Year at the CMA Awards. Then, he electrified movie fans by performing it in “Urban Cowboy.” Like the song’s hero, Johnny, Daniels is confident. Besides that mythical fiddle made of gold, Daniels plays Gibson Les Pauls. He looks forward to performing at Temple Live and vowed “to shake the tiles off the ceiling,” he said with a chuckle.

Playwright reveals not only hell but fraud on the border in The Western District, an exposé of old Fort Smith

In this town that reveres its historical lawmen and judges, audiences may not be ready for the shocking truths told in a new play by Brandon Goldsmith. But all of it is historically accurate, documented by detailed accounts in the Congressional Record.

“For 14 months and 20 days,” a tagline of the play referring to 187273, “the Western District Court of Arkansas becomes the most corrupt courthouse in the entire United States.”

Through a crooked conspiracy between the federal court, the U.S. Marshal and townspeople, the government was defrauded via inflated deputy marshals’ expense accounts, padded with payments to imaginary posse members. And that was only part of the heist.

Total expenditures paid to the Arkansas court in that time were $403,266.49. A congressman said that these court expenses “were more than the expenses of all the New England States, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Ohio combined.” Judge Logan H. Roots’ yearly salary was $6,000; somehow he received $54,650.35. In today’s dollars, those sums represent millions.

For this robbery of Uncle Sam, no one was ever convicted, Goldsmith learned. The loot was pocketed by 1870s Fort Smithians, citizens and lawmen alike. Roots’ ill-gotten fortune was the founding capital deposit for a bank that became today’s First National Bank.

Fortunately, today’s modern bank has a sense of humor about its distant history and is a sponsor of the play, Goldsmith noted.

Goldsmith, now an adjunct professor at UAFS, “followed the money” through extensive research. The characters, from judge to marshals, court clerk, mayor, businessmen and even saloonkeepers, portray the fraud (with explicit, period cussing). The conspiracy bamboozled federal investigators and a grand jury. “They got away with it,” he explains, “because everyone in town was in on it and making money.”

To take more kickbacks, Roots encouraged the deputies to “work up 44

business,” allowing them to make arrests in Indian Territory without a warrant. Deputies brought prisoners to the court’s commissioner, who falsified backdated warrants, paying them up to 30 days for expenses.

The deputies kicked back to the court officers. “This led to an increase in arrests for trivial crimes, turning the court into a nuisance,” Goldsmith explained. Audiences will love how the problem was ended.

The Western District premieres Sept. 21 at the restaurant 21 West End, its actual setting. In 1872, it was “The Hole in the Wall Saloon,” then converted into a rough courthouse. 21 West End will serve period drinks and dinner. A special label wine is being created. Plays will be staged through Oct. 14 at venues including The New Theatre, King Opera House, Fianna Hills Country Club, Taliano’s and Weiderkehr Winery. Goldsmith, who recently completed his Ph.D, often worked on the play in downtown establishments such as Fort Smith Coffee Co. He credits the help of local historians, sponsoring businesses, the theater community and especially 21 West End. A question about the history of the Hole in the Wall Saloon from its owner, Kevin Dorey, led to the birth of this project.

Western Swing is going to rule Fort Smith (again? still?) in a Fort Smith Bicentennial event that includes a lecture and concert of the genre’s greatest musicians. It’s all a dream come true for creator Robert Huston, leader of a local band called Western Swing Rules and producer of an internet series of the same name that explores the music identified with Bob Wills & the Texas Playboys.

Both the lecture and concert will highlight the connection between Western Swing and this city.

From 1935-1940, after becoming established at the Cain’s Ballroom in Tulsa, where it broadcast a daily show on KVOO radio, Bob Wills and his Playboys played to huge crowds at a hall in Fort Smith every other Friday night. When Bob left for California to make movies, his brother Johnny Lee took over the Fort Smith schedule, continuing for many years.

There are other significant local connections that will all be highlighted on Sept. 28. Dr. David Stricklin, the son of legendary Playboy pianist Al Stricklin, is the director of the Butler Center for Arkansas Studies in Little Rock and a board member of the Bob Wills Heritage Foundation.

He will give a talk on “Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys – Live in Fort Smith.” Anyone who danced at the Winter Garden or other local dance halls is encouraged to hear Stricklin’s talk and tell him of their first-person experiences. The talk will be presented at the Windgate Theatre on the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith campus as part of its Season of Entertainment and the UAFS History Department’s “American Democracy” lecture series. Sept. 14-15 September Night Court Presented by Friends of the Fort, local volunteers will recreate the trial of Frank Carver, charged with the murder of Annie Maledon, the daughter of George Maledon, hangman for the Federal Court under Judge Isaac C. Parker. Annie lived a troubled life under the watchful eyes of Fort Smith citizens. Eventually, she chose to seek a new future with a young gambler from Muskogee. Frank Carver was a man with big plans but little means who declared an unending devotion to Annie. Their troubled relationship ended when Annie was shot in the back on a dirt road in the Indian Territory. The law called it murder, but Frank insisted it was only a tragic accident. Our Front Porch is a traveling Arkansas landscape art show. Michael’s Mansion’s large, inviting porch will be filled with rocking chairs and activities guaranteed to inspire nostalgic memories and designed to revive the traditions of afternoons filled with good conversation, games of checkers or chess, storytelling, singing and doing needlework or sketching. Video and audio installations share stories, anecdotes and songs from the people who inhabit Arkansas.

Our Front Porch is an outreach project of Traveling Arts Fiesta, a non-profit group founded by Jeannie Stone to bring cultures together through education and the arts. It will hold its debut in Fort Smith and travel to several other locations through Spring 2019. Stone, a professor of English composition at Arkansas Tech University, is working on her doctorate in interdisciplinary leadership and community building through the arts at the University of Arkansas-Little Rock.

Michael’s Mansions artists Jimmy Leach of Stilwell, Pat Riggs of Muldrow and Lorrie Dale Bridges of Greenwood will showcase paintings with the front porch theme. “The artists will unpack the words ‘neighbor’ and ‘home,’ interpreting the connectedness and rootedness of family and neighborhood life on the front porch,” Stone said.

The front porch event will feature many of the same themes. Visitors can learn about different cultures through listening to audio recordings of immigrants who moved to Arkansas speaking in different languages and dialects and sharing music from their home countries. An impromptu theater with comfortable rocking chair seating will show a video of 16 native Arkansans who share their recollections of peaceful afternoons on front porches, decks or backyard retreats.

“It will be fun to go to different regions of the state and bring Southern hospitality to them,” Stone said. “Most of our venues won’t have a real front porch like Michael’s Mansion, so we are making a virtual porch surrounded by actual rocking chairs for our other events.”

Sebastian County Cooperative Extension members will serve refreshments made by Michael’s Mansion’s chef, as well as do needlework on the porch as women did years ago. There also will be several small circles, each led by a facilitator, where visitors can share their faith stories. People of all faiths will be encouraged to share.

“Our hope is that these conversations will continue,” Stone said. “We hope to interest local libraries to get involved in story circles as a way to keep them going.”

Sept. 23 Clayton Conversation On May 8, 1871, the Western District Court of Arkansas was moved from Van Buren to the location famously known as Fort Smith’s “Hole in the Wall” saloon, a location currently occupied by 21 West End. During the course of only 14 months and 20 days, it becomes the most corrupt courthouse in the entire United States. "The Western District" is a play covering that period, revealing the true story behind the founding of First National Bank and the real reasons Judge Isaac Parker came to Fort Smith. Sept. 25 Young Homes Massey Activity Center Dedication A new activity center serving the children residing at the Curt, Cliff & Opal Young Children’s Home will be dedicated and opened.

The Young Homes, a neighborhood of four residences for 32 foster children, was created in 2017. This activity center, made possible by donors Wallace and Jama Fowler of Jonesboro, will be named in honor of her parents, Curtis and Celia Massey. The center will provide space for indoor activities for the children residing in the Young Homes, where they are cared for by house parents.
