Everyone loves a wedding – even me I have a Scrooge-like confession: Every year I vow we will never have another wedding issue.

Then, every year, I change from a curmudgeon to cooing about the nice couples we have interviewed. They’re all so young and in love.

Who can help it?

There’s something about making this issue that’s too much like the tension of planning a wedding. Details loom more importantly than they should. It’s really about sharing a happy day.

Just like the bride, groom, parents and wedding planner, after it is all over, I think it was great.

As we are located next door to the Bonneville House, a traditional place for weddings, receptions and showers, we enjoy spying on weddings when we can. Even while hidden, we always stand up for the bride. A few times, we’ve been caught. That’s why my colleague Donna Payne has made a sign for her window, which overlooks the pretty Bonneville courtyard. She tapes it face-out to the glass to read “Happy Wedding Day from Entertainment Fort Smith!”

If we openly confess this is a staff full of Gladys Kravitzes, we’re generally excused.

As a mom, I hereby compliment the parents of each of our featured couples. Every one of them that I spoke with has lovely, respectful manners. Although that makes me feel just exactly as old as I am, I can certify that each of these brides has Proper Home Training.

Who had the most extravagant wedding is not of interest to us. We love the love stories, the romantic gestures, the thoughtful expressions of gratitude, the traditions of “something blues” and the genuine joy shared with family and friends.

I may never have a traditional mother-of-the -bride experience. I suspect one of our daughters will be wed in a quick civil ceremony on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., and the other in a Chicago comedy club. But their father and I will be happy if they are happy. That’s what really counts.

hen a couple is blessed with a multitude of friends and relations, they’re blessed even more when their wedding can include them all. Olivia Frost and Daniel Fritsche, with both of their families, a wedding planner and the good fortune of an available new venue, celebrated their union with a guest list of hundreds.

There was a risk in choosing the early new year date of 1/7/17, but it fit their busy lives. Olivia had graduated from the University of Arkansas and would soon enter a graduate program to become a physician assistant.

Daniel, also a UA graduate, is pursuing an MBA. And yes, it snowed – but only lightly; enough to cover the ground and make for beautiful photos.

Olivia’s doting dad was the hero of transportation solutions. The vows were said at the family’s church in Booneville; the reception was at The Loft at Stone Oak in Greenwood and the couple each had 13 attendants.

He chartered a coach to move the mob to and from church to reception.

“I know it sounds crazy but I really do talk to all those girls every week,” Olivia said in defense of her many, beloved bridesmaids, “ ... my sister, a couple from high shool, some family and the rest were Kappas with me. I had four roommates for two years and then I lived in a house with six girls.

You just get so close to people!” Daniel’s groomsmen were much the same mix. Just 26 of their closest friends, she laughed.

With the date set a little more than six months after Daniel proposed, serious organization and teamwork made this happy event happen. Their wedding would be the first held at The Loft at Stone Oak, which was under construction at the time. The venue owners are family friends; everything was ready on time and the wedding’s team were delighted.

Conventional wisdom is that only some of the invited guests will RSVP, Olivia said, “but I think 98 percent responded!” Her only stress came from two things: ascertaining there would be plenty of catered food. Fortunately, her dad is a cattleman so they served their own beef. Her wedding gown was the second bump. It arrived marked the correct size, but was quite too large. Two months of alterations later, she could say, “I feel pretty now!”

Through the hospitality of her family, her bridesmaids stayed overnight at a lodge in Greenwood and were served breakfast. They dressed at The Loft and went by coach to the church. Olivia’s childhood pastor returned to officiate in a ceremony attended by close family.

Arriving at The Loft, the couple enjoyed a small meal at a table for two, privately, before greeting their reception guests. It’s a respite their planner, Mary Ann Sandifer, always arranges. Olivia noted it was the only bite she took until hours later, from plates packed for them to take away.

Her concept of decoration was “simple, but elegant,” expressed with tables set with china and chargers, greenery with beautiful flowers and candlelight from votives and tall candelabras. Light strings and lighting effects during the dancing set a warm mood, along with the affection and happiness of their family and guests. All who attended seemed to have danced with abandon, including parents, grandparents and youngsters.

Olivia recalls her emotions building up at being with “all of your favorite people, in one place, for only one time in your whole life! I’ve never felt so loved.” Daniel had resolved beforehand that they should try to be mindful and present, she said, and to stay beside each other all evening.

“We’ve been to a lot of receptions where the couple gets separated,” she

said. “It was nice that we were together while talking to everyone. I’m thankful he did that.”

Daniel also had a romantic wish that they would spend their wedding night at Mount Magazine – the place they had first kissed. Again, Olivia’s father had a great plan. He had a friend who would take them there by helicopter, a 25-minute flight. When it was time to take off, the temperature was a bitterly low 7 degrees. “We had to let the helicopter warm up,” Olivia said. “But the snow on the ground made us able to look down and see everything. It was peaceful, a nice time for reflection.”

Earlier, Daniel had stationed his truck at the landing area, packed with their luggage. They drove on up the mountain and found a welcome plate of brownies and strawberries at their door. After a twonight stay, the couple flew from Little Rock to a honeymoon in the Virgin Islands. They returned to Little Rock, their home, to a warm winter temperature of 55. But their snowy wedding day will be a always be a sweet memory. Olivia is certain they were blessed in every aspect.

“I wanted to be married, we wanted the Gospel to be proclaimed and for everyone to have so much fun! I think we accomplished that!”

outhside High School graduates Scarlett Taylor and Aaron Pryor had launched into careers in Dallas when the longtime couple became engaged.

She is at Neiman-Marcus as a marketing analyst; he works in video communications in the Big 12 Conference. They knew they wanted to be married back home. Careerwise, they’re where they want to be. But where is home?

With parents living in Texas and Arkansas and college friends now far-flung, the Fort Smith natives chose Fayetteville, where they had graduated from the University of Arkansas.

Their date was July 2.

“Fayetteville felt like home,” said Scarlett. An aunt who lives there was a great asset in recommending a venue, a bakery, a DJ and other services. A pastor from their home church agreed to officiate at Fayetteville’s First Christian Church. Fayetteville was central and convenient to most relatives and guests.

For long-distance planning, Scarlett had a creative team of both moms, their friends, her sister, aunts and other relatives and friends.

“We had a theme of ‘bohemian elegance,’” she said. She created a mix of table decor from their families; some, heirlooms from her grandmothers – mixed with other items her “team” found for her. She curated tablescapes, including family silver, vintage books and flowers, she said. “We searched for almost a year leading up to the wedding and really, everyone helped to find something.”

Scarlett invited six attendants. Her younger sister was maid of honor and five Alpha Delta Pi sorority sisters were bridesmaids. Sentimentally, Scarlett got permission for them to spend the night together at their sorority house the night before the wedding.

Aaron’s six groomsmen were his younger brother, his best friend as best man and four close friends from college.

Scarlett surprised herself with her choice of gown, changing her own, long-held style idea.

During college, she had interned with a bridal designer in Dallas and has always had a fascination with wedding dresses. She had always pictured herself in a dress with an illusion neckline.

Instead, she chose a strapless gown from Neiman’s bridal floor and for “something blue,” Manolo Blahnik heels to help her gain the altitude to kiss her 6’4” guy. She’s a petite 5’4”.

It was exactly the right dress because the bride was beautiful. Her mother, Dana, helped her into her dress. The bride’s party was treated to a professional hair and makeup styling before the ceremony.

After their vows in the beautiful sanctuary, the reception venue, The Garden Room, was just around the corner on Dickson Street. The couple chose it for its indoor/outdoor options.

Sure enough, there was a rainshower that day but it ended early. Scarlett took it for good luck.

The party was a warm, spirited celebration with friends from every part of their lives. Aaron and Scarlett have known each other since, as she recalls, they both played in the Ramsey Junior High Band. Attraction led them to date through high school and college, when they fully fell in love and planned their live together. “My little sister jokes that Aaron has been around for half her life,” Scarlett said. It’s true. They have been sweet on each other for almost 10 years.

The couple was toasted with champagne and words both sweet anda funny. Guests enjoyed wedding cake and the groom’s golf-themed cake with delicious heavy hors d’oeuvres. Then all ages danced with the abandon of college kids.

Aaron and Scarlett left the reception under a canopy of sparklers held up by their guests in a classic Mustang convertible driven by a friend.

The best ideas Scarlett has to share from her own experience were to have a plan for unexpected weather (it did rain!) and to enjoy the participation and help of family and friends. While she loved Aaron’s truly romantic surprise proposal, she later realized he had been carrying around her engagement ring in his pocket all day – in New Orleans!

Perhaps a bit more security would have been a good idea, she suggested.

Overall, the couple would not change a thing about a wedding and party everyone enjoyed.

aleri Bunda and Austin Cantrell have said vows to one another twice – but are married just once and forever. The high school sweethearts from Roland, Okla., became engaged in February of 2016 when he formally proposed to her at a family gathering.

Austin is Roland’s football hero who was recruited to play for the Arkansas Razorbacks. Valeri was still at home in Roland. They planned a June wedding. But one month after she said “yes,” Austin asked Valeri to make it legal with a civil ceremony. “That day!” Valeri said. Being legally married was advantageous for several practical reasons, including her enrollment in Paul Mitchell The School in Fayetteville. Austin promised they would keep their plans for a traditional wedding, too.

“We drove to the Sebastian County Courthouse with our parents and grandmother and a very sweet man married us,” she said. They had planned to keep the civil marriage quiet but, as they have such close families, everyone soon knew. Their June wedding plans went on.

Valeri was inspired by the timber and glass Cooper Chapel in Bella Vista, designed by Arkansas architect E. Fay Jones, but it was a bit far away and had restrictions that didn’t fit their plans. She was delighted to discover Greenwood’s Ed Wilkinson Pavilion was open on their wedding date, June 17. Its stone, wood and glass design created the sun-filled ambiance she loved; it had a patio for outdoor vows and plenty of space for their indoor reception for more than 100 guests.

Family from both sides worked together to create a canopy draped with a riot of beautiful flowers, where the couple would stand with the officiant.

“We all made it, in my backyard. Then the guys had to take it apart, move it and put it up again,” she said. That job, plus making and arranging all the decorations and food, was a full-on family affair. Valeri is still touched at how much work their families did to create their special day.

“That morning, I just pointed where I thought things should go,” she said. She left with bridesmaids to get their hair and makeup done by a

friend and mentor Sheradon Smith, stylist at Roots Salon in Fort Smith.

“I remember walking back in and everything was perfect!” she said.

She chose to wear her mother’s wedding dress, which fit her exactly and was a style she loved. Except for rehearsing the vows and knowing they’d dance with their parents and each other, “the rest of the plan was ‘wing it,’” she laughed. She and Austin simply wanted everyone to have a good time.

The guests enjoyed delicious food prepared by the best cooks in their families. With so many friends in common from Roland, including her fellow cheerleaders as bridesmaids and his brother as best man, “it was a big high school reunion,” she said. Their close friends celebrated and also gladly helped in many ways.

“With everyone pitching in, it was awesome,” Valeri said. “We had until midnight and everyone stayed to help us clean up. It was flawless.”

She and Austin had a honeymoon trip to a Florida beach, a first for him.

Then it was back to Fayetteville, where “football never stops,” she laughed.

She enjoys the privilege of sitting in the team’s family section in Razorback Stadium and waiting for Austin after the games in a special family lounge.

“I can’t help but be happy for him,” she said of being a football wife.

Neither of them enjoy that his intense athletic training, classes and game schedule often conflict with her school schedule, but they are managing and dedicated to working toward their future. She will graduate at the end of the year and plans to work at a Fort Smith salon she loves. Austin, who has been a standout tight end for the Hogs, is focused on the upcoming college season. He’ll become eligible for the pro draft after the upcoming year. He is currently majoring in criminal justice, however and plans to graduate.

Valeri’s advice for other couples planning a wedding is to accept any gracious offers of help; to try some DIY projects if you enjoy doing them, relax about the details and surround yourself with people you love. The Cantrell’s two happy ceremonies showed they were doubly certain they believe in their love and their happy life to come.

The beautiful, floral-draped canopy (opposite) was the Cantrell’s central focal point. Simple decorations and table linens in her colors created the carefree reception look that Valeri envisioned. She wanted sunshine and happiness to be the style of her wedding and it all came true.

The wedding party was made up of dear friends and relatives and the guest list “was like a Roland High School reunion,” Valeri said. The families helped set up and take down the decorations.

The wedding cake and groom’s cake were designed and made by family members. Austin’s cake reflects his favorite pastime besides football.

True Grit Running gets runners on their way

fter only a year in business, True Grit Running Co. has become a magnet for the growing community who avidly walk and run for fun and exercise. It’s not just for the shoes and gear – they’re drawn by a supportive, knowledgeable staff.

Owner Melissa Vitale learned by personal experience that the encouragement of running mentors can make a difference. She started running through the Women Run Arkansas program, influenced by her mom and sister, both runners. Once she trained up to the ability to run a 5k race, she began mentor others, too.

When she noticed that many local runners gave each other shopping lists of items to bring back from “vendor villages” at out-of-town races, she began to consider opening a specialty running store in Fort Smith. The running community is glad she did, judging by the store’s good traffic.

She chose a newly renovated Garrison Avenue location at the corner of 4th Street.

She has extensive training in fitting a customer with a correct, well-fitting shoe. Running shoe reps visit regularly to update the staff.

Matching the right shoe to a particular activity can prevent soreness, injury and incorrect form. People who do CrossFit exercise, she pointed out, move their feet side-to-side in workouts. Running shoes are designed to go straight forward.

Prepare for the Unexpected

J

ust when everyone got a handle on what to expect of The Unexpected, something changes. The planners of the public art project that first emerged onto downtown Fort Smith buildings three years ago are not complacent.

“We are going to do a few murals, as well as some site installations. They’re going to be very different than in the past,” said Claire Kohlberg, event director for The Unexpected. “We’re going to introduce some new or forgotten spaces. But we are not publicizing those until the event.”

All will be revealed in mid-July. Kohlberg said artists will begin arriving and, as in past years, their work be noticed as it emerges. The Unexpected moved from September to July to coincide with the Peacemaker Music & Arts Festival, July 29.

Art on the Border, an exhibit of regional artists, also will be open July 29 at the Blue Lion Gallery & Event Center downtown.

“Art and music have always been a successful combination and we were pleased when the organizers of Peacemaker felt the same. The combined weekend creates an opportunity for increased awareness for both events, introducing new artists and audiences to each other,” she said. JustKids, the curatorial arm of the festival, has collaborated with music festivals such as Coachella.

So, downtown will evolve yet again as The Unexpected, founded originally by Steve Clark with the organization 64.6 Downtown, presents its third art event. Art created here has now been seen all over the world. The international artists who have made these works, such as the British artist D•Face, who painted the work shown above, travel and create globally and have their own press and followers. The Potting Shed reopens, renewed

R

ebecca Gann welcomes customers to her beautiful new store, The Potting Shed, which stands near the site of her original store. The funny thing is, the original was only a little more than a year old when Gann realized she should expand.

The success of her first effort at opening a business has surprised her, Rebecca said. Her experience is inspiring. After four children, four grandchildren and time spent as a loving caregiver at the end of her mother’s life, she felt the birth of an idea while shopping at one of the area’s vintage markets. This led her to antiques shopping and then, she voiced the thought of opening a design/home goods store in Alma.

One area of the Alma decorator boutique is for displaying kitchenware, linens and more.

Her husband, himself a business owner, encouraged her to rent a small building on U.S. 71 North and open up. Customer response to her tasteful selection of antiques, vintage goods and new decor items was extremely positive.

“I have always loved to decorate a home,” Rebecca said. One of the unique features she built into the new Potting Shed is a nook with a bare set of vintage shelving on one wall and an empty mantel on the other. “This is to let someone put things together and see how they might look at a similar place in their home,” she explained. “They might even want to bring in some of their own things to see how they look mixed with new things.”

She also created a friendly “front porch” area with weathered, comfortable Flanders metal yard chairs. It’s a hangout. In another nook, she created a kitchen vignette with a vintage porcelain double-drainboard sink, shiplap walls and open shelving. Breadboxes, cannister sets, tea towels and other kitchen ware are displayed.

“I love serving people, so we can also do some dip-testing in the kitchen,” Rebecca said, sampling dip mixes, salsas and gourmet treats.

The inviting shop has current, popular vintage looks such as galvanized metal items and farmhouse-style accessories. But Rebecca has chosen something for every person’s own style, including traditional and contemporary decor.

Place popcorn in a large bowl and drizzle with olive oil; toss. In a small bowl, mix oregano, basil, garlic, salt and chili flakes.

Sprinkle herb mixture over popcorn and toss again. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese; toss and serve.

TAMARI & SPICE POPCORN MIX 7 cups popped popcorn 4 cups crispy corn and rice cereal 1/2 cup peanuts 1/2 cup packed brown sugar 1/2 cup light or dark corn syrup 1/3 cup butter 2 tsp. tamari or soy sauce 1 tsp. ground cinnamon 1/2 tsp. ground ginger 1/8 tsp. cayenne, optional Preheat oven to 300 degrees. In a large, foil-lined baking pan, spread popcorn and cereal. Sprinkle peanuts on top; set aside.

In a small saucepan, stir together brown sugar, corn syrup, butter, tamari sauce, cinnamon, ginger and cayenne, if desired, over medium heat.

Cook and stir until butter is melted and mixture is blended.

Pour over popcorn mixture and stir to coat. Bake 30 minutes, stirring twice.

Remove from oven and stir: allow to cool.

Break into pieces. Serve immediately or store in an airtight container.

SRIRACHA LIME POPCORN 3 quarts popped popcorn 1/2 tsp. minced lime zest 2 tbsp. butter or margarine, melted 1 tbsp. hot chili sriracha sauce 2 tsp. fresh lime juice 1/4 tsp. salt Place popcorn in a large bowl. Sprinkle popcorn with lime zest. Mix butter, sriracha sauce and lime juice. Drizzle over popcorn and toss. Sprinkle with salt; toss again and serve immediately.

Coneflowers They’re not just purple anymore

I

n July, our gardens explode like a giant painting. When midsummer turns up the heat, so do the hot colors of summer.

I’m so excited by some new bold colors in Echinacea, also called the reliable coneflower. They are not just purple anymore! This plant is spectacular. I have grown them as basics in my garden for years. They tolerate almost any soil, will grow in full sun or part shade and they can grow from 12 to 48 inches tall. Plus, they’re cold hardy from zones 3-9. That means they will take just about anything Mother Nature will throw at them.

Butterflies and bees love them and so do hummingbirds. Birds also will come to your garden in the fall to eat the seed heads of Echinacea.

While visiting our wonderful Botanical Garden of the Ozarks, I was thrilled with the fabulous varieties of Echinacea. I have always grown Magnus, a wondrous coneflower variety sometimes reaching 4 feet tall. It was the 1998 perennial of the year. I also grow its soft, pale sister White Swan. In fact, both have won the plant of the year award given out by the Perennial Plant of the Year Association.This year, I wanted to research and find some new and exciting varieties.

I reached out on social media and found my friend Alan Carner had ventured into the world of Echinacea. I visited his Fort Smith garden and found some incredible plants in colors I had never grown.

I also enjoy the hot colors of other flowers. Color is the joy of summer! I have Pardon Me Daylily, Black-eyed Susan and Shasta daisies. All of those are as easy and hardy as coneflowers.

Carefree, beautiful and beneficial to insects and birds, the coneflower varieties are so simple: plant, water, enjoy. If you are buying growing coneflowers, get the biggest plant you can find or afford. Add some compost and water, then stand back and wait for one of the most enjoyable plants you will ever grow.

These make beautiful cut flowers, but I prefer to let the flowers age naturally. They will often dry sturdily where they stand. I leave the seed heads on instead of cleaning them out of the flowerbeds as we might do with other spent blooms. In fall and winter, they are food for the birds. Birds also spread the seed about and next season, I usually have more plants.

Enjoy this easy-going summer flower. Always find places to tuck in a few hot colors to catch the eye and lift your spirits. – Reba Mize

Fort Smith’s youngest music festival has been joined by The Unexpected art event to combine on overlapping dates. The Peacemaker will supply outstanding music and chill ambiance, July 28-29.

Gov’t Mule started as a side project by Warren Haynes and Allen Woody while on break from playing with the Allman Brothers Band. From that nucleus grew a hugely talented band that now carries the torch of modern Southern rock, jam style. This tour is behind an album, The Tel-Star Sessions, with work first recorded in 1994 with Matt Abts, before Woody’s death.

Jamey Johnson, a prolifically award-winning singer-songwriter, is “one of the greatest country singers of our time,” according to the Washington Post. Jamey may be channeling the pure vein of country – he has drawn the greats to his studio to record with him.

The festival bookers know how to start off right with opening Friday night act Andy Frasco, who never met a crowd he couldn’t first make dance and then incite into a joyous, partying frenzy. He’ll be followed by fiddle phenom Natalie Stovall & the Drive.

The North Mississippi Allstars are the Delta juke-joint genre’s millenium ambassadors. This brother act fuses Memphis rock, Delta juke and even the Holly Springs fife-and-drum tradition with their own distinct genius. There is truly no band just like them in the world.

Saturday opens with Split Lip Rayfield whom the festival describes as an “aggressive stew of acoustic bluegrass instrumentation, tight country vocals,fierce metal shred and in-your-face punk sensibilities.” Right. What they said.

The Austin duo Greyhounds is Anthony Farrell and Andrew Trube who bring from Texas their own funky, blues-and-R&B-laced rock ‘n’ roll.

Hayes Carll swept the 2017 Austin Music Awards with album of the year, Lovers and Leavers, song of the year, musician of the year, best folk performer, best vocalist and best songwriter – after a five-year recording break. It’s a live album, so expect a great performance here.

Gov’t Mule will close out the fest, which will be epic, improvisational and, no doubt, awesome.

Artist and artisan tents also will be on the park grounds to visually enrich the concert and hangout experience.

On Sunday, a “praise God and pass the biscuits!” tradition continues. Beginning at 10 a.m., area churches feed the hungry and the hung over, free at the park. This Gospel-style brunch also will include live gospel choirs and speakers.

Bordertown Brew Fest/Ales for Trails mashes up craft beer tasting and a beer run

Space4Lease of Oklahoma City is a psychedelic rock band that appeals to new age audiences who wish they experienced the ’70s and still admire the grit and grime of the ’90s.

The surprising mash-up of craft beer, good music and the campaign to build Fort Smith trails created the event called Bordertown Brew Fest/Ales for Trails.

In equal parts, it’s a celebration of the craft beer movement with running and the dream of an interconnected trail system that is gradually encircling Fort Smith neighborhoods. The main spectacle is a fun, not-so-serious Beer Run where contestants race a 3.2-mile course. Participants (of legal age) are challenged to drink a full beer at the start, midway point and right before crossing the finish line.

The non-racing audience enjoys great music, Baggo tournaments, lawn pong, socializing and tasting hundreds of craft beers from breweries both local and worldwide. More than 350 varieties are expected to be offered for tasting.

Music performances by Escape Tones, the Jillia Jackson Band and Space 4 Lease will add to the relaxed atmosphere to a day intended mostly for an adult crowd. Children will be admitted.

But the intention behind the fundraiser is to entertain adults to raise funds to provide all ages, through continuing trail-building, with an always-available place for the healthy activities of walking, running and biking on safe, urban trails.

Encouraging progress toward the goal of realizing a connected, continuous urban trail system is happening, according to Drew Linder, a trails enthusiast speaking of the groups Park Partners and Friends of Recreational Trails. These citizen-led efforts, with the Fort Smith Parks Department, have made real the Greg Smith Trail on the Arkansas River. The Greg Smith Trail is a wide, lighted concrete walkway soon to connect Harry E. Kelly Park and Fort Smith Park. It will be the course for the Beer Run. The Greg Smith Trail now has bike repair stations with available air pumps and tools. Trail expansion continues in Chaffee Crossing and Ben Geren. The UAFS area is a target, as well.

July 17-19 Grand Avenue Baptist Church Vacation Bible School “Gadgets and Gizmos” includes large-group skits, dramas and music, as well as small-group discussion and teaching. This year’s VBS also features a special guest, “Grumpy the Robot.” Grumpy is a sophisticated robot, engineered and built by the faculty and students at the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith.

John Martini, on the faculty of the College of Applied Science and Technology, will bring Grumpy and several college students to provide hands-on activities for children to explore the world of emerging technology.

More than a hundred volunteers will be on hand to provide a safe, fun environment. Each small group of 10 kids will be led by one or more adults, and many other volunteers will help with recreation, crafts, snacks, registration and check-in, as well as a team dedicated to safety and security. Every building on the church’s 10-acre campus will be in use, including the 1,200-seat worship center, complete with specially designed sets. The Kid’s Worship Praise Team, which leads worship every Sunday, will teach children highenergy songs and impactful drama will be provided by a talented team of volunteers. Preschoolers who are ages 3-5 will host their own version of “Gadgets and Gizmos” in the Tiny Town Preschool Center. The gymnasium at the center of campus will be the site for age-appropriate games that reinforce the teaching concepts every evening. Gilcrease on Wheels to make a stop at RAM JULY

Gilcrease on Wheels is a mobile museum experience that brings art and social studies to fourth and fifth grade students. Trained educators from the Gilcrease Museum of Tulsa offer two curriculum themes that coincide with each grade level: Spiro Mounds: Native American culture for fourth grade and U.S. history for fifth grade. It will consist of a discussion-based lesson with demonstrations, an art activity and exploring the traveling exhibits. These two exhibits contain historical information, touch and feel items, SmArt Cards and facsimiles of documents and artwork from the museum’s collection. Each session is also enriched with educational artifacts from the museum. An interactive virtual tour of the Focus on Favorites exhibition rounds out the program. Fourth-grade students will learn about the history and culture of Native Americans; Taos, New Mexico, Paintings, and Artifacts.

At the CCC Camp, some 200 men at a time lived and worked in the raw forest to create Devil’s Den State Park. They made roads, bridges, dams, cabins and trails from natural materials present in Lee Creek Valley.

July 2 Devil’s Den CCC Reunion Day Visit Devil’s Den State Park on a day set to honor the historic Civilian Conservation Corps, young men in national service who built the park from 1933-1942.

The CCC, created by Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal, was established to provide work for unemployed young men during the Great Depression. Up to 200 men at a time lived at this work camp. They worked for cash allowances of $30 a month and, of that, mandatory allotment checks of $25 were sent back home to their families. The camp enrollees created an enduring legacy still enjoyed and used today. Devil’s Den State Park has been designated a National Historic District and holds what has been called the most complete example of CCC park architecture. Lee Creek Valley provided the native wood and stone used to craft the park's CCC rustic-style cabins, buildings, native stone dam, roads, pavilion/restaurant, trails, bridges and the Yellow Rock Overlook. Discover how these men worked, played and learned by exploring a self-guided CCC Interpretive Trail. Family-oriented CCC activities throughout the day will step back in time to the 1930s. A dinner, games, dance, music, movies and clothing will be just like the CCC boys had. Visitors are encouraged to wear 1930s style clothing. July 6 Author Visit & Book Signing with Anita Paddock: Closing Time Anita Paddock, author of the true crime novel “Blind Rage,” has published a new true crime book titled “Closing Time.” It is a true crime story of the robbery and ruthless double murder of Kenneth Staton and Suzanne Staton Ware, of Van Buren. On Sept. 10, 1980, the respected jewelry store owner and his daughter, Suzanne, were discovered to have been murdered in their store.

Valuable diamonds and other jewelry were missing. The crime shocked the town of Van Buren and set its lawmen on a fiercely determined investigation that led from Rogers, Ark., to Jacksonville, Fla., and also to Vancouver, Canada. “Closing Time” deals with the tragedy that befell the victims and the loved ones they left behind. Seventeen years later, a man convicted of the murder was executed by the state of Arkansas. A native of Van Buren, Paddock told the story of the murder of Ruie Ann Park, publisher of Van Buren’s Press Argus newspaper, in her debut book, “Blind Rage.” At 6 p.m., mingle with the author for a book signing. Watch a screening of a new documentary by Larry Foley, an Emmy awardwinning filmmaker, journalism professor and Fort Smith native.

“The Favored Strawberry,” a one-hour documentary, was filmed in eight states, including Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Florida, New Jersey, North Carolina, Maryland and California. The story unfolds at farms, big and small, where strawberries are still picked by hand, one by one, often by hard-working immigrants chasing the American dream.

A veteran journalist, educator and documentary filmmaker, Foley is currently a professor and chair of the Lemke Department of Journalism at the University of Arkansas. His productions have earned seven Emmys from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, and 17 Emmy nominations in writing, journalistic enterprise, history, cultural history, special program and community service. His films have also received three Best of Festival of Media Arts awards from the international Broadcast Education Association.

United Way volunteers will spend the weekend filling a school bus with the school supplies they hope shoppers will pick up while shopping at local Walmart Supercenters and drop off at the bus parked outside. Buying a few items can cost less than $5. Some people may be so generous as to donate supplies for a whole classroom. Any donation at all will be used by local schoolchildren. For some without means to purchase supplies, a donation may make a huge difference.

Walmart will be displaying school supplies in an easy-to-find location inside each store.

Buses will be stationed at all the Walmart Supercenters in Sebastian, Crawford, Logan, Franklin, LeFlore and Sequoyah counties. Anyone can volunteer to staff (and stuff) the bus, as well.

July 19 Doc Night: Gleason (R) After he is diagnosed with ALS, professional football player Steve Gleason begins making a video diary for his unborn son, as he, his wife, their friends and family work to raise money for ALS patients. All the while, Gleason’s disease progresses. His team, the New Orleans Saints, plays a part in this story. Gleason is the defensive safety remembered for blocking a punt in a 2006 game that became a symbol of recovery in New Orleans in the Saint’s first home game after Hurricane Katrina. Gleason’s experiences while living with the disease were captured on video over the course of five years. He is still living with Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Summer at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art Along with the popular Chihuly: In the Gallery and in the Forest Exhibit, which continues through Aug. 14, two new exhibitions will be on display.

Animal Meet Human features 16 works that explore the ways contemporary artists address human issues by depicting an animal presence. Several works will be on view for the first time at Crystal Bridges, including Adonna Khare’s massive 40-foot-long pencil drawing, Elephants OCT (2012). Khare will be at Crystal Bridges on Aug. 11 for a gallery conversation about her work. Other works on view for the first time at Crystal Bridges right now include Andy Warhol’s colorful Endangered Species (1983), a print series that includes 10 images of various animals, and sketches by modern dance choreographer Merce Cunningham,Untitled Assorted Animals (1980), as well as Helen Frankenthaler‘s The Bullfight (1958).

Not to Scale: Highlights from the Fly's Eye Dome Archive July 1-March 31 Several drawings, models and concept sketches that form part of Buckminster Fullers’ Fly’s Eye Dome Archive, recently acquired by Crystal Bridges, will be exhibited. An American architect, visionary and inventor, Fuller (1895-1983) had revolutionary ideas focusing on improving quality of life. Fuller is known for promoting the geodesic dome as a housing option. With other visionary designers and collaborators, Fuller worked on circular openings called “oculi” to the dome in a pattern similar to that of the lenses of a fly’s eye. The openings would allow light and air to enter without compromising the integrity of the structure. The materials in this exhibition illuminate the collaborative, creative process that guided Fuller and his collaborators as they developed and perfected the Fly’s Eye Dome. This exhibition accompanies Fuller’s 50-foot Fly’s Eye Dome, one of three prototypes he created for efficient, inexpensive housing. The dome was acquired by Crystal Bridges in 2016 and was recently installed on the museum’s north lawn. Admission to the museum is free. The dramatic, true story of one of the last great gun battles of the Old West will unfold at a program provided by the Dalton Defenders Museum of Coffeyville, Kan. Curators Wendy and John Alvey will share the details of this iconic failed robbery.

The date was Oct. 5, 1892, during the same era when William H.H. Clayton was prosecuting outlaws in the federal court in Fort Smith and deputy U.S. marshals were serving writs across the land.

The Dalton Gang made an ill-fated attempt to rob two banks. The gang was made up of Grat, Bob and Emmett Dalton; Bill Power and Dick Broadwell. As the robbers crossed the downtown plaza toward the banks, the Daltons were recognized by townspeople, who raised the alarm. Coffeyville citizens armed themselves with weapons from nearby hardware stores. When the bandits, with nearly $25,000 in stolen money, emerged from the Condon and First National Banks, they were fired upon.

In the ensuing gun battle, eight men died. Four more were wounded. Grat and Bob Dalton, Bill Power and Dick Broadwell were killed; Emmett was severely wounded. Four of Coffeyville’s defenders also were killed. Three other citizens were wounded, one of them severely.

How to contribute to the Calendar of Events to publicize events Entertainment Fort Smith Magazine has served this city and region since its launch in August 2000. The first of our editorial goals was to provide our readers with almost every option for worthwhile entertaining, educational or cultural activities, of which there are numerous instances each month.

Don’t ever say there’s nothing to do here!

E Fort Smith is valued by readers because it gathers all those local events in one place for handy and reliable reference.

The magazine invites contributors to report events for publication each month by using an easy, online form found at our website, efortsmith.com. At the website, click on “Add Event,” a tab found at the upper right-hand corner of the screen. Then type information into every field of the form, which asks for the date, time, description, location and cost of each event. Photos may be emailed for consideration to calendar@efortsmith.com.

The deadline for submission is the 10th of the month prior to publication. The magazine’s editorial policies determining the kinds of events it will publish are viewable on the web.

Essentially, events should be free or low cost and, generally, presented non-commercially. The calendar editor reviews and edits each entry before approving and publishing the events online. The managing editor publishes those online submissions in the print magazine according to available space in our pages.

The Calendar of Events is not for commercial advertisement. However, the magazine is happy to provide advertising rates as an option. This is the place to reach 80,000 readers.
