They’ve only just begun When I was a young wedding guest, “They’ve Only Just Begun” was everyone’s song. As a mother of grown (not married) daughters, I definitely belong in the blonde-coveringgray, friends-of-parents seating. But that idea of only just beginning still came to my mind as we interviewed three couples who shared their wedding stories to give our readers inspiration and ideas.

I felt especially maternal toward two individuals – I remember as children both Cap Vick, who married Emillie Taake, and Claire Stovall, who married John David Clayton.

Claire was perhaps 9 years old when we asked her to float under our camera for a cover photo. Even then, she was unruffled. I hadn’t seen her since but found she is a 20-year-old of the same Cover girl Claire in 2005 cool and collected demeanor.

And I respect Montella and Carlos Whitmore, who both built their careers and relationship carefully over time before they were ready for the wedding they wanted, to embrace their families and many friends in a joyful, elegant celebration. These young people have married in the busiest part of their lives, while she advances steadily in the medical field and he volunteers to give back to community children while working and returning to college to become an elementary teacher.

Elsewhere in this issue Authors Sherry Toliver and Barbara WebsterMeadows are our publishing colleagues and admired elders. Long before Entertainment Fort Smith magazine, these two childhood and high school friends had founded the community newspaper The Lincoln Echo.

Just as our early crew and my co-publisher, Linda Seubold, and I had done, they learned while doing how to keep a start-up publication alive. They came before us in having a mission to cover the positive in this community.

Long after successfully selling their newspaper to its next publishers, they have paired up once again to preserve the history of Lincoln High School and will release a new historical book on the 50th anniversary of its last graduating class.

It is an important work for Fort Smith’s history to share the culture of its black residents’ community before desegregation.

Another feature by garden writer Reba Mize reaches beyond flowers and plants to show the significance of a 19th-century garden that has been restored to that period’s style and plantings.

The Victorian garden at Van Buren’s Drennen-Scott Home Historic Site is intentionally more than a lovely landscape. Reba learned from the site’s historian and one of the Scott family descendants what the garden style can teach us about how early Arkansans lived, socialized and learned.

There are still plenty of things to enjoy with children in our extensive guide to summer fun in the calendar of events for kids and lots of family and grown-up fun in our featured performance and main calendar of events.

Celebrate July at one of the many patriotic fireworks celebrations and have fun!

They liked coffee for an early start

Claire Stovall and John David Clayton fell in love over cups of coffee and on their wedding day, they linked arms and toasted – with coffee.

They like feeling ready for an early start. These college students, both 20, decided to marry while they are still undergraduates.

That’s “early” by today’s attitudes, even though the couple and their families have been sure of their love for quite some time.

While they were seniors attending Southside High School, Claire started a before-school Bible study and John David met with her to join, offering to help with lessons. At the time, each believed the other was only meeting for the study. Their friendship grew.

Although they had planned to go elsewhere, both wound up attending UAFS, where Claire is a nursing student and John David majors in accounting and finance. While dating, love grew. Soon, spiritually, they were ready to join their lives in marriage.

The two wanted the consent and blessing of both sets of their parents. They knew Claire’s dad, Darrell Stovall, would be the hardest to convince. So, they prepared carefully.

The first time he went to her dad’s office, John David proposed a plan of how he could provide for them and afford to live while continuing through college, along with list of reasons he loved Claire.

“He asked me to come back in six months,” he said.

“He was nice but said, ‘I don’t want to think about this right now,’” Claire explained. They waited patiently through a school semester.

Both are close with their parents and everyone seemed to accept that the young couple would prevail before long.

“My parents are advocates of young marriage, they married young,” John David said, “but I think at first they were worried if it really was a wise decision.” He also counseled with his own father, who is the pastor of Covenant Presbyterian Church.

After the requested wait, Claire’s dad, a soft-hearted father, was won over by the couple’s even better-researched plans and resolve.

“And I brought the ring,” John David said, smiling. The diamond was from Claire’s great-grandmother’s wedding ring.

With everyone on board, he could formally propose.

“We used to go to a lookout behind ABF when we were first dating and that’s where he asked me to be his girlfriend,” Claire said, so she was unsuspecting when he took her there on a drive. John David is a singer and songwriter, so it was not unusual for him to sing to her.

She was genuinely surprised by his proposal and more so that he had arranged for a photographer to step out of hiding and capture the moment. They went back home, where she found both of their families waiting to celebrate with them.

The groom’s father, Dr. John Clayton, blesses their marriage after hearing their vows at Covenant Presbyterian Church, where he is the pastor.

Claire Stovall and John David Clayton With the help of her mother, Dawn, Claire began arranging the simple, heartfelt ceremony the couple had dreamed of having. On May 21, they would be married by John David’s father, John, who was married to his wife, Sydney, by his father, Johnny.

In honor of the coffee dates when their love was brewed, the couple chose to have a morning wedding. A guest list of more than 300 filled the church and balcony.

Friends and their siblings were their attendants. Two of their best friends sang “Be Thou My Vision” during the traditional Presbyterian ceremony. Claire chose natural, loosely arranged florals and sprigs of lavender tied at the pew ends, with delicate rose petals strewn on the aisle. The morning sun streamed through stained glass windows.

A brunch reception followed at Adelaide Hall, only blocks from the church. The floor-toceiling windows drenched the ballroom in sunshine on the happy party.

“We’re morning people, so we knew we wanted to have a coffee bar. Because we are young, we didn’t serve alcohol,” Claire said.

Coffee with a choice of flavors, cream and sugar were served in pressed-glass mugs with biscotti.

An elegant buffet offered a colorful selection of handmade pastries, fruits, deviled eggs, mini-quiches, sliced croissant sandwiches and a mocha punch.

Guests were seated at long, communal tables set with white-on-white linens and white tulips in clear vases.

Claire, who chooses healthy foods, had a sugarless cake made for the couple but served a traditional wedding cake to guests. The bride and groom’s cake was served on an heirloom plate used in many of her mother’s family’s weddings. A cake topper that adorned her parents and father’s parents cakes was lovingly used again.

The groom’s cake was styled as a guitar after John David’s love for music. They also provided a real guitar for guests to sign. The couple gave their guests CDs of favorite love songs.

Guests showered the bride and groom with fragrant, loose lavender petals as they left for a honeymoon cabin in Franklin, Tenn. Besides the area’s natural beauty, John David and Claire enjoyed whiling away a couple of hours in, of course, a coffee shop.

The couple will make their home here and complete their degrees at UAFS.

Claire gave her bridesmaids floral robes.

Fruit, cheeses and crudites were presented with pastries, quiche and a coffee bar.

The Claytons toasted with coffee and served a bountiful brunch.

A sociable couple has a spirited, loving celebration Emillie Taake and Cap Vick love fun, friends and family so they knew their Nov. 14, 2015, wedding would be a huge celebration. When Emillie phoned her mother after accepting Cap’s proposal, her mom immediately went into action.

“She had the venue booked by 9 a.m. the next morning,” Emillie said.

All of their planning had in mind warm hospitality for their many guests.

Although they had mutual friends, the two Fort Smith natives met for the first time in early 2014 in Hot Springs at Oaklawn Park.

“I was at my aunt’s box; she was with her girlfriends and mom at her aunt’s box,” Cap recalled. “I told them that if I didn’t cash a ticket by the ninth race, I’d buy them a drink,” he said. “I got her phone number.”

“And we’ve talked every day since,” Emillie said. It was a year later, just before Valentine’s Day, when Cap schemed to pull off the kind of proposal Emillie had once told him she wanted. They made a trip to La Jolla, Calif., and spent the day visiting the San Diego Zoo. He plotted to ask her to marry him at the beach and managed to pick up her ring at Newton’s Jewelers only an hour before their flight.

“I had shown him a list of, like, five things he had to do. I had seen it on Pinterest,” she said. Neither of them even care now what the list included besides to ask her parents, use her whole name and take a video.

He really tried.

“It was February so the nights were short! I took her down to the beach but it was pitch black,” Cap said. No video was possible in the dark.

“He couldn’t even see my face,” she laughed, “but I couldn’t even see the ring!” Cap teased her that it was gold, which she hadn’t wanted.

She said yes anyway as seals barked “arf, arf ” all around them, he said.

As do all local couples who marry in autumn, they had to compete with the Razorback football schedule to choose their Nov. 14 date. Cap’s alma mater, OSU, would have a bit of suspense before beating its opponent but Arkansas was set to play LSU, away and televised. The RSVPs flowed in.

Cap’s only request was to include his Cowboy orange, which Emillie gracefully worked into the wedding flowers. He had a formal orange tux vest with OSU emblems, but wore it only after the dancing started. Of such compromises, good marriages are made.

Emillie invited her eight bridesmaids with a custom-labeled bottle of champagne and personalized date planners. Cap asked his groomsmen with a custom wooden box with a cigar, cigar cutter and a fine Bourbon.

Kerri, Emillie’s mother, and she worked with a wedding planner to arrange all the details of a formal ceremony at First Lutheran Church and reception at Hardscrabble Country Club. When their planner, who was expecting a baby, had to bow out for necessary bed rest, her mom stepped in and carried on without a hitch.

Bobby and Lee Vick, Cap’s parents, gave the large rehearsal dinner at 21 West End with cocktails, appetizers and a delicious steak dinner.

“Mom mentioned the word ‘grandchildren’ five times in a speech that she said she wasn’t going to give,” Cap said.

Both remember their wedding day as having the most beautiful weather and the entire church ceremony as perfect. Emillie’s long-time pastor, who has moved away, returned to officiate their wedding.

As they arrived at the reception, the bride and groom were happy the wedding planners had arranged for them to eat a sample of everything served at various food stations with mini burgers, pasta and other treats.

The groom followed the “don’t see the bride” tradition, but that didn’t keep him from texting to her, “Are you going to say yes?”

Cap and Emillie sat at a head table with their wedding party and parents and enjoyed many toasts to their happiness. Hundreds of guests were seated in a tent festooned with twinkling lights with beautiful floral centerpieces.

They cut and served their wedding cake and the groom’s Cowboy cake, but enjoyed their dessert more in a basket of food thoughtfully packed and sent home with them, Emillie said.

When the music began, Cap claims that Emillie never left the dance floor. The couple loved the music by Backroad Anthem, which thoughtfully covered the couple’s favorite Blake Shelton song, “God Gave Me You,” for their first dance. The song also had been performed in their church ceremony. Bride and groom danced and danced some more with children, parents, friends and guests. Many guests remarked how much they had enjoyed the band.

“The next day I cried and said I wanted to do it all over again,” Emillie said, but only because she wanted to enjoy every moment over.

The couple honeymooned in Maui and will live in Fort Smith, where Cap works at Weldon, Williams & Lick. Emillie is working on a master’s degree in business administration and in her family’s business, Cheers of Fort Smith.

Their long love awaited its perfect celebration

Montella “Shay” Norwood and Carlos Whitmore lived the beloved scriptural lesson that “love is patient” as the couple persevered to build a strong relationship and seal it with the wedding day of their dreams.

“Everything in our lives together feels like it was supposed to work out the way it did,” Shay said. “Carlos and I met in 2009 and dated for a short time but broke up.”

Always an active, involved student who also worked steadily while in college, she was “only a student” in nursing school when she reconnected with him a year later.

His time also was filled, as the co-owner and barber of New Image Barber Shop and as a volunteer coach of youth teams at Boys and Girls Club City champion teams, he emphasized proudly.

In 2010, they came back together and started dating again. Two years later, a tragedy brushed their lives that put them both in danger and ended in a death in Carlos’ family. Through the ordeal, Shay found that Carlos was protective and resilient.

“After that experience, we have almost been together nonstop,” she said. “Maybe we can count on our two hands the amount of time we have been apart.”

She continued to advance in her career as an R.N. for Sparks Medical Center with an intense schedule where she cares for postsurgical patients. To propose, Carlos took advantage of her care-giving instincts, pretending he had fallen to the floor.

“I was faking and shaking like I was really down,” he joked, recalling his trick. When she came to his aid, he said, “While I’m down here,” getting up to his knee, “Will you marry me?”

Always a trickster, Carlos had already set her up to get past Valentine’s Day, when she might have suspected he would pop the question, to propose on her birthday, three days later.

“On Valentine’s Day, he had given me the most wretched flowers and candy. I’m a gift person,” she explained, “but these flowers were dead and it wasn’t my kind of candy. I was raised right, I just thanked him, but ... .” On her birthday, there were beautiful roses and a ring to make up for it all.

Despite the fact she is a compulsive organizer, they took a vacation just afterward to Disney World and they didn’t set a firm date. But when she started planning, she brought all her forces to the task.

She chose March 26 after careful research and taped the date on a wall where she saw it every morning. She also had to honor Carlos’ few but serious requirements. He had to finish his boys and girls season for Team Gerber. He had to have his pastor and had to wear white.

As she searched for a venue, a small link caught her eye online in a Choctaw Casino ad. “This little dot was labeled special events,” she said.

Things flowed as if they were meant to be, again. Shay met with Sheryl Buckner, hotel sales manager. Choctaw Casino and Hotel had never hosted a wedding and reception, but Shay’s wishes and their facilities clicked right down the list. She wanted an outdoor wedding and the hotel had a beautiful shaded patio. Their CenterStage event center was steps away and would hold the Whitmores’ hundreds of guests. Their chef could cater a splendid meal. Guests could stay in the hotel.

Buckner was delighted to accommodate Shay’s every need and said she is glad this congenial couple was the facility’s first wedding.

With her setting in mind, arrangements fell together as if destined. She found almost everything she wanted in Fort Smith, including a beautiful wedding dress with a delicate pink blush hinted in its color and a variety of styles of bridesmaid’s dresses all a shade of her color, amethyst.

When March 26 arrived, the bride and groom dressed with their attendants and were fussed over by family in spacious, separate suites.

Skies were clear, but there had been an indoor fallback plan.

On the arm of her mother, with her father and stepfather behind, she said her vows with her tall, handsome groom under a beautifully decorated arbor with their attendants and Carlos’ son and daughter. His parents and grandparents looked on from their seats. As they made their way from the altar, they “jumped the broom,” an old tradition. It was the most resplendently decorated straw broom ever.

With the professional waitstaff attending every detail, their 200 guests enjoyed cocktails and appetizers while wedding photos were taken. Shay changed to a deep purple gown, also flawless, for the reception. She wanted to dance, she explained, and also admitted, “In my wedding dress, I couldn’t sit or even bend at the waist!”

The atmosphere was transformed by lighting effects and projections.

Two DJs helped with music and announcements. After a delicious meal, there was wedding cake and also a table of intricate, miniature cakes.

Guests of all ages danced. Shay knew their arrangements were successful when they lost no one to the casino.

Shay was in bliss and said she cherished her guests and relatives. She didn’t care when they realized they had forgotten to light their unity candle and calmed Carlos when he realized his new ring had slipped from his finger as they left the reception. She was ready to order a replacement.

But there’s another advantage to a casino wedding – with their high-def cameras, the ring was located and returned in a day.

Guests enjoyed cocktails inside while the wedding party’s photographs were made after the ceremony.

50 years after Lincoln High School closed, classmates preserve its historic significance in a massive book egregation of public schools ended in Fort Smith after graduation in 1966, when fewer than 100 remaining Lincoln High School students were set to be transferred to Northside High School for the 1966-67 school year.

After several years of transition of students and faculty, full school desegregation was a huge step forward here and in the national movement for equal civil rights for black citizens.

It also foretold the disappearance of a longtime nucleus for Fort Smith’s black residents.

In a comprehensive new book decades in the making, two 1962 graduates of Lincoln High School have gathered history, photographs, documents and memories of the school and its students. Their collaborator, Evelyn E. Tonia Holleman, contributed a database of students and faculty – more than 6,000 names – of the city’s black schools, which had been established in the 1870s. Holleman’s research also includes the history of Van Buren’s black schools.

The first graduates, nine students, of the school then called Howard High School were conferred their diplomas by Judge Isaac C. Parker in 1892.

From then until desegregation, Howard, which became a primary school, and then Lincoln High School held the aspirations of all black parents for their children’s future.

As when a small town’s school is consolidated into a larger district, the history and identity of a closed school is in peril of vanishing. Sherry (Brown) Toliver and Barbara (Hubbard) Webster-Meadows, childhood friends and members of Lincoln High School’s class of 1962, have worked together for many years to preserve the history, culture, pride and bonds that Lincoln High School created for its students and their families.

“It really was the nucleus,” Sherry said of Lincoln. “We knew little sisters, big brothers, their parents,” Barbara added, finishing Toliver’s thought as these long-time friends often do.

The classmates had both moved away after high school – Sherry to Kansas City, Mo., and Barbara to Los Angeles.

In 1980, Sherry, with her mother, Georgia Mae Adams Brown (Class of 1938), had attended the first all-school reunion held by the Lincoln High School Alumni Association.

She was moved by the joy and interest of people who returned from all over the nation to see friends and teachers and to share memories.

By 1992, they had both moved back to Fort Smith and bonded again while participating in community organizations and volunteering.

In 1993, they founded The Lincoln Echo newspaper to keep Lincoln alumni in touch and publish news from and for the black community.

Their invaluable associate was Harold Joe Wilson Jr. and one of their most encouraging supporters was George McGill Jr., now a state representative, Barbara said. Both had attended Lincoln, as well.

The two women published the newspaper for eight years with the hands-on help of some of their children and grandchildren, too. Their profiles were raised in the city as leaders and doers. Both were appointed to various action committees, advisory boards and task forces.

Other opportunities and duties led them to sell the Echo to Napoleon Black (Class of 1959) and partners; he remains the owner and publisher of print and digital editions of the newspaper, but hopes to shepherd it onward someday into the hands of new, younger publishers who will carry on.

Articles and photos published originally in the Lincoln Echo, information gathered for souvenir programs for the Lincoln Alumni Association bi-annual reunions and other historical material that fell into their hands through research grew into a significant body of data. What they had – in boxes and digital files – was a greater amount of local black history than had ever been collected by any other author or group.

Sherry, Barbara and Tonia agreed collecting the material in a book would ensure this history would remain available for all time in libraries, schools and archives. They made 2016, the 50th anniversary of the last graduating class, their publication target.

“The history of Lincoln High School is too important to be lost,” Sherry wrote in the book’s foreward. “This history is not only a big part of Fort Smith history, but also Arkansas history.”

Genealogists will find the student rosters invaluable, as they list names, birth and death dates and class years, data compiled from school and census records. There also are biographical articles about individuals and entire families.

Guidance by example distinguished Lincoln Of special interest are profiles of memorable teachers and administrators who influenced many classes of students. Lincoln’s outstanding faculty is given credit for creating expectations of excellence and instilling the students with confidence and ambition, the authors agreed.

“We wanted that ‘A,’’’ Barbara said. Rep. McGill often has said in his public speaking and mentoring of students that at Lincoln, achievement made you “cool.”

“Our teachers wanted us to surprise people with our good manners, our vocabulary and style of speaking,” Barbara said. In a close-knit school and community, students worked hard to please not only their teachers. “We wanted to do the best we could for our parents and our grandparents,” Sherry added.

Some of the faculty and principals remembered and revered by living alumni include E.O. Trent, Mr. and Mrs. C.M. Greene Sr., Mr. and Mrs. S.E. Bullock, Rizetta Davis, James and Minnie Cox, Cecil Holman, Dora Sullivan, Hazel Maude Pegues, Betty Laster and Mame Josenberger. There are many more cherished educators in the book.

with advanced and terminal degrees, successful careers in every kind of field (but particularly education), in the clergy and in civil service, elected office and military service.

Many were “firsts” in their fields as AfricanAmericans, as their teachers had anticipated and prepared them to be.

There also is a Lincoln legacy of mentoring and service to youth. Names stand out of people who continued to give their time as coaches, Sunday school teachers and school board members. Lincoln taught them to give back just as they had been given guidance.

They Never Forgot the Fun There are alumni over 70 who still bear their school nicknames. Dances, musical performances and plays – plus pranks, crushes and embarrassing moments – are also in the book.

In the last decades that Lincoln was open, many students lived near Howard and the high school campus at North 9th and N streets and also Elm Grove Housing Project, now the site of Martin Luther King Park.

Sherry and Barbara lived there and fondly recall playing with legions of classmates.

“I can still remember sitting on that hill, watching ball games and hearing the jukebox playing ‘Stand By Me,’” Barbara said.

Each bi-annual Lincoln High School all-school reunion held since 1980 has drawn more than 1,000 people.

Attendance for this year’s 50th anniversary of the school’s closing and last graduating class is expected to be quite large. Not only alumni but extended families attend, planners said, which helps to continue Lincoln’s legacy.

The July 7-10 reunion includes an opening Game Night 6 p.m. July 7 at St. Boniface Community Center. At 9 a.m. July 8, a Cancer Walk will be held at Martin Luther King Park. At 8 p.m., a meet-and-greet will be held at Choctaw Casino in Pocola, Okla., with a banquet followed by dancing. To remember classmates and teachers, a 10 a.m. July 9 memorial service and luncheon will be held at Kay Rodgers Park.

A memorial to the late Almer Lee, outstanding athlete at Lincoln, Northside High School and the University of Arkansas, will be dedicated at 3 p.m. July 9 at Martin Luther King Park. At 6 p.m. July 9, activities return to Choctaw Casino for the main awards banquet. The morning of July 10 is open for members to attend church services. The reunion concludes at 2 p.m. with a picnic at Kay Rodgers Park Pavilion. History blooms in the Drennen-Scott Victorian Garden

D

rive past the oldest operating courthouse west of the Mississippi, turn up a beautifully shaded, steep and curving street off the quaint Main Street of Van Buren, Ark., turn left into the drive – and step into the past. Anyone can visit what I think is one of the most secret public gardens in Arkansas.

But first a tiny bit of history about where this garden grows. It is the Drennen-Scott Historic Site, now a resource of the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith, used for on-site research and open to the public.

Known as founders of Van Buren, John Drennen and his partner David Thompson settled in Arkansas Territory in the early 1830s at Columbus, near present-day Van Buren, along the Arkansas River. They began harvesting the abundant local timber to be transported by steamship.

They soon purchased a small port, known then as Phillips Landing, and property surrounding it. Soon after, they platted streets and sold lots that would become the town of Van Buren.

As he had been flooded out of the settlement of Columbus, Drennen chose higher ground for the Van Buren home he built that would pass down through his family until 2004, when they offered it to be purchased and preserved as a historic site. It opened to the public in 2011.

The single-story home would grow to have a long veranda facing the Arkansas River. It was a center for socializing, for business and the reception of distinguished guests. Drennen and his daughter Caroline’s husband, Charles Scott, worked to attract settlers, merchants, a railroad line and bridge and status for Van Buren as the county seat after statehood in 1836. Drennen was elected to the Arkansas House of Representatives.

Drennen died of yellow fever in 1855, leaving considerable wealth to daughter Caroline and her husband. Under their resolute watch, the family fortune grew.

The Victorian era was when understanding of the natural world was expanding spectacularly. Gardeners, including women, became interested in acquiring new specimens of plants from around the world.

The 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago introduced George Ferris’ wheel, the zipper, ragtime music and other wonders. Caroline and Charles’ daughter, Francis “Fannie” McAlister Scott, was a guide at the fair’s Arkansas Exhibit. A frieze in the main sitting room is an oil-on-canvas given to her for her service. Can you imagine how this girl from Arkansas was enriched by this experience in Chicago? She was given the title “Arkansas’ Own Daughter” for her work there. It is on her tombstone. I am sure it influenced the garden we are able to visit at the house today.

I enjoyed touring the home itself, which is full of beautiful, original family furnishings and exhibits, and speaking with Tom Wing, who loves sharing his knowledge of this property. He explained how students helped dig archeological test pits and conducted excavation to discover the site of the vegetable gardens near the formal garden.

My gracious guide for the tour of the garden was none other than the fifth-generation descendent of John Drennen, Caroline Bulloch Bercher, who also is a master gardener. I could see her love for the grounds of her family home the moment we met.

The River Valley Master Gardeners meet around 8 a.m. on the first and third Thursday and the second and fourth Saturday at the gardens to tend it.

“The garden’s plants are period-accurate – all plants that are here would have been available in the Victorian era,” she explained.

As soon as I walked through its rosecovered arbor, I was transported to a time long past when woman wore pretty frocks and hats and men spoke of thoroughbreds and crops. I tasted the sweet tea and lemonade that would have been served as the evening lingered.

Ornamental gardens were considered outdoor parlors, symbols of prosperity and intellectual advancement. In the cool of the evening before radio broadcasts or electric fans, they were a respite from the day’s heat.

As Caroline and I walked, she explained that the master gardeners used family journals and photographs to choose plantings that are period-correct for the original garden planted by Caroline Drennen Scott.

It is laid out with gravel walkways around a central, raised bed. The perimeter of the garden has flowerbeds with short stone walls. Plaques throughout the site show old photographs that reveal there was once a lily pond.

John Drennen took frequent steamboat trips to New Orleans to sell cotton. I just know he brought his beloved wife a few of the garden urns we see in the photos and perhaps even some exotic plants.

Caroline Bercher listed some of the blooms that would have been planted originally: hollyhocks, blackeyed susans, tall garden phlox, iris, day lilies, larkspur, pincushion plant, peonies, lavender, moon flower, clematis, dianthus, ferns and, of course, roses are among them.

During the Victorian era, when showing open affection was frowned upon, giving specific flowers became a way to reveal your feelings. A yellow iris signified passion; a camellia, good luck when given to a man. The idea was called “Floriography.” Volumes were written about which flower meant what.

Each variety in this garden is tagged with its botanical and common name to help gardeners learn what may work in their yards.

“We will take volunteers,” Caroline said. “You don’t have to be a master gardener – we take new gardeners and old hands. We also take donation plants.” Call the Drennen-Scott house for information or to volunteer.

WHAT’S COOKING with KRISTAN ROLAND CAKE & ICE CREAM BITES 1 box dark chocolate fudge cake mix 4 large eggs 1 cup sour cream 1/3 cup vegetable oil 1/4 cup water 1 gallon ice cream 5 cups chocolate melting wafers 1/4 cup vegetable shortening Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line two 9x13-inch pans with foil and spray with nonstick baking spray.

In the bowl of your mixer, combine cake mix, eggs, sour cream, vegetable oil and water. Beat on low for 30 seconds. Scrape the bowl, then beat on medium speed for two minutes. Divide batter between the two pans and spread evenly. Bake for 10 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let cakes cool to room temperature, then pop in the freezer for an hour to chill.

While cakes chill, let the ice cream soften to spreadable consistency.

Working quickly, spread half gallon over each cake, making sure it's even. Place pans back in the freezer for several hours (or overnight) until ice cream is frozen and firm.

In a microwave-safe bowl, combine chocolate and shortening. Heat in the microwave, stopping to stir every 30 seconds until melted and smooth. Let sit for about 5 minutes until slightly cooled.

Remove cakes from freezer and, grabbing the ends of the foil, remove cakes from pans.

Peel back foil and cut into small rectangles.

Leave a few slices out, and place remaining cut pieces back in the freezer. You want to work quickly and with a few pieces at a time to prevent melting.

Dip cake and ice cream bites in melted chocolate, letting excess drip off. Place finished bites back in the freezer on a baking sheet lined with wax paper. Repeat process, until all bites have been dipped.

If desired, drizzle with melted green candy melts for garnish.

MINI JELL-O AQUARIUMS 3 oz. box blue Jell-O (Any brand or flavor will do. I like a lighter color blue) 4 half-pint canning jars 1/2 cup Nerds candy 4 Swedish Fish candies Pour Jell-O powder into medium bowl.

Boil 3/4 cup water and pour over the Jell-O. Stir for about 2 minutes, until completely dissolved. Add 3/4 cup cold water.

Divide gelatin evenly into two small jars and place in the refrigerator for about four hours, until firm and fully set.

Divide the Nerds into the bottom of the two remaining jars. Right before serving, loosen the set Jell-O from jars by running a knife along the inside edges. Place jar upside down over the jar with the candy and give it a tap. It will fall right out and into place!

Cut two slits in the Jell-O and insert your Swedish Fish. Makes 2 mini Jell-O aquariums.

FRUIT GEMS Banana Bread 1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons butter 1 cup white sugar 1/2 cup brown sugar 2 large eggs 3 ripe bananas, peeled and mashed 8 oz. sour cream 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour Cinnamon Cream Cheese Frosting 1/2 cup salted butter, slightly softened 8 oz. cream cheese, slightly softened 2 tsp. vanilla extract 4 cups powdered sugar 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon Assorted sliced fruit, for topping.

Preheat oven to 300 degrees. Spray two 7x3-inch loaf pans thoroughly with nonstick spray and set aside.

Bread: In the bowl of your mixer, cream together butter and both sugars on medium speed for one minute. Scrape the sides of the bowl, then blend in eggs, mashed bananas, sour cream and vanilla. Mix on medium speed until blended. In a separate bowl, combine cinnamon, salt, baking soda and flour. Add to the banana mixture and mix on medium-low until combined. Give the bowl a good couple of stirs from the bottom, then divide evenly into prepared pans. Bake for one hour, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let cool completely on wire rack.

Frosting: In the bowl of your mixer, beat cream cheese, butter and vanilla on medium speed until smooth. With the mixer on low, add powdered sugar and cinnamon, beating until just blended.

Increase speed to high and beat for two minutes.

Slice banana bread and spread generously with cream cheese frosting. Top with sliced fresh fruit.

Peacemaker Music & Art Fest returns July 29-30 The ambitious local creators of the heartily well-received 2015 Peacemaker festival will present their second annual festival July 29-30 at Harry E. Kelley Riverpark.

The Peacemaker’s all-volunteer board founded this festival last year to help fill up the summer and introduce diverse musical styles and artists.

The festival was part of a revival of cultural events that joined the Unexpected Festival and Steel Horse Rally to make 2015 a year that bucked up the outlook of locals who love our city and want to see it flourish with entertainment. All three new events returned for 2016.

Following June’s Riverfront Blues Festival and happening about a month before the second Unexpected Festival of art is to take place in September, the Peacemaker Festival slays the mid-summer doldrums.

Indie bands, regional stars the Turnpike Troubadours and the legendary Leon Russell are paired with Oklahoma mainstays like the Hosty

The Arkansas Bandmasters Association, which holds its annual convention in Fort Smith this year, invites the public to enjoy a free concert by the Dallas Wind Symphony, featuring the music of John Williams. There will be 500-600 seats available for the general public and no ticket is required.

Classic Broadway shows lead the new UAFS Season of Entertainment wo classic, spectacular Broadway shows – 42nd Street and Pippin, lead the line-up of the UAFS Season of Entertainment, revealed by Stacey Jones, associate vice chancellor for campus and community events.

42nd Street, a Tony Award-winning, backstage musical comedy, includes some of the greatest songs and dances ever presented on the Great White Way, including, “We’re In the Money,” “Lullaby of Broadway” and, of course, “42nd Street.” It is the March 1 season finale of the annual program, fittingly, because nothing could follow it.

Pippen is a play within a play. The story is told by a traveling troupe of actors and acrobats who act out the roles of a young man’s quest for identity and speak directly to the audience. This revival and Tony Award-winner

The StepCrew, Sept. 16, will open the season with the rhythmic sound of Irish stepdancing. A cast of 11 performers includes four touring members of The Chieftans to provide the traditional music. Aug. 6 Fur Trapping on the Frontier Trapping and hunting animal furs was a major occupation in Arkansas for much of its history. In the 1700s, French fur trappers met at Belle Point to sell furs collected each year. People continued to hunt and trap through the 1800s and early 1900s for money. Treasures from the American Folk Art Museum America has always been a nation of makers. Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art presents an exhibit of more than 115 objects including quilts, carvings, signs, samplers, weathervanes SEPTEMBER and whirligigs made by Americans when the nation was young. On the heels of the American Revolution, everyday citizens filled their homes with objects and artworks – made by their own hands – that revealed the hope and enthusiasm they felt for our new nation. These self-made artists created practical objects that reflected their daily lives. They embellished furniture and household items with images of the countryside, made decorative objects reflecting American patriotism and politics, and stitched quilts and samplers that demonstrated their skill and creativity. Traveling painters moved from town to town making portraits of local community leaders. Together, these artisans crafted a visual story of America’s development. CAE Opening: The Making of Stuff and Maidenhair In the main gallery, enjoy Shawn Adair's "The Making of Stuff." Shawn Adair uses a layering approach to create depth, mystery and intrigue in his work. Adair does not shy away from technology in his altered images as he brings a feeling of nostalgia mixed with quirky symbolism, light and humor. The name of the exhibition tells the story and Adair is the storyteller, creating delightful fantasy worlds that defy description. In the studio gallery, Laura Wattles brings her new series “Maidenhair: Beauty, Grace and Light,” to the Center For Art & Laura Wattles Education for its public debut.

After years of working with pencil in exacting detail and photorealism, her new series moves in a new and playful direction. This series is her exploration into portraits of modern young women featuring braids, scarves and hair, while keeping the lines simple and the colors loose.

July 4 Mayor’s Fourth of July Celebration A patriotic celebration and family fun will be offered downtown on the Fourth of July. Even before the official program, the Compass Park Spray Pad will be open, along with the Park at West End. A Mustang Club Car Show will take place from noon-5 p.m. in the glass pavilion. Concessions provided by various veterans service organizations. The traditional Mayor’s Fourth of July Celebration entertainment will begin at 7 p.m. with music by Blue Fiddle, followed by the River Valley Community Band. Mr. Cabbageheads and the Screaming Radishes follow and play until time for the spectacular fireworks show at dark (approximately 9:30 p.m.) After the fireworks, the Cabbageheads return to play a little longer and offer entertainment as the park empties. Dancing Atoms: Barbara Morgan Photographs Barbara Morgan (1900-1970) was an American OCTOBER photographer who was an early proponent of photomontage, the process of making a composite photograph by rearranging and overlapping two or more photographs into a new image. The artist stated the photomontages allowed her to “feel the pervasive, vibratory character of light energy as a partner of the physical and spiritual energy of the dance, and as the prime mover of the photographic process.”

She had a keen interest in the European avant-garde technique of using light and objects as props to create light drawings. From the mid-1930s until the 1940s, Morgan photographed the Martha Graham Dance Company, capturing the beauty and science of their movements for her book project “Martha Graham: Sixteen Dances in Photographs.” This exhibition includes 30 photographs that highlight Morgan’s legacy of observing life in relation to “dancing atoms,” providing a glimpse into her world of photography, painting, light and modern dance. July 9 Walks through History: Tuberculosis Sanatorium The Arkansas Historic Preservation Alliance offers a guided tour of the Arkansas Tuberculosis Sanatorium Historic District at Booneville. An AHPP historian delivers a lecture about the properties while leading guests on a walking tour of approximately two hours.

Located on Pott’s Ridge south of Booneville, the sanatorium admitted its first patient in 1910. By 1940, the sanatorium was one of the largest and best of its kind in the country. It was self-sufficient, complete with its own farming operation, fire department, post office and water treatment plant. The event is co-sponsored by the Booneville Historical Preservation Society and the Arkansas Tuberculosis Sanatorium Museum. Free.

July 9 Brent's Morrison Memorial Chicken Run Brent Morrison was shot and killed while on a run July 11, 2015, on Wells Lake Road. This is the inaugural annual run in honor of Brent. July 9 Bordertown Brew Fest: Ales for Trails Inaugural festival created to bring people downtown and raise funds to continue expanding the city’s trails system. Along with the 6 p.m. Beer Run, which requires runners to drink three beers selected by Core Brewing and Distilling Co. along the riverfront trail course, there will be a Baggo Tournament, outdoor/ active lifestyle vendors, samples of more than 250 beers, food available from local food trucks and a home brewing competition. Bass Reeves Legacy Day & Western History Conference Three Rivers Museum in Muskogee will celebrate the life and legacy of one of the greatest heroes of the American West. Bass Reeves was the longest-serving U.S. deputy marshal on the frontier. His career in law enforcement spanned more than 32 years at a dangerous time when the average marshal served less than five years. Reeves also was among the first African Americans to serve as a marshal west of the Mississippi. Making more than 3,000 arrests during his illustrious career marks him as one of the most successful lawmen in U.S. history. His exploits rival any of those found on the movie screen, yet his life and legacy are largely unknown. The Bass Reeves Legacy Day and Old West History Conference seeks to rectify this by offering a glimpse into the lawman's life in his final hometown of Muskogee where the Wild West was still in need of taming. Guests will enjoy two days of activities that explore the life and times of Reeves. The two-day conference will include the unveiling of city street signs designating the Bass Reeves Walk – the police beat through the Black Business District where Reeves patrolled for two years as a Muskogee Police Officer. The unveiling and press conference will begin at Three Rivers Museum at 10 a.m.

July 15. The keynote speaker is Wallace Moore, cowboy poet, storyteller and historical presenter on the Buffalo Soldiers, black U.S. Army calvary soldiers who enlisted after the Civil War. Enjoy a gathering on the back lawn of Three Rivers Museum watching Western movies on the big screen.

Hold on to your valuables though – outlaw gangs have been known to rob the trolley. After the tour, enjoy a barbecue lunch with cobbler for dessert followed by conference presentations, including storytelling, shoot-outs, history lectures and meeting Western authors. To honor Jim Rowland, help students succeed A scholarship will be named for retiring Fort Smith athletic director July 1 marks the beginning of Jim Rowland’s retirement, but not the end of his influence on Fort Smith public school students.

When the longtime athletic director announced his retirement, after 53 years as an educator and administrator, many who respect him came forward to show their appreciation. Those who know him understood the modest, soft-spoken Rowland would probably turn away any gifts or tributes to himself as an individual.

So friends and colleagues are developing a Jim Rowland Scholarship through the Fort Smith Public Schools Foundation.

The scholarship will be designed to provide supplemental funding for higher education for students who have participated in athletics or

student activities through junior high and high school and who demonstrate a deep need for monetary support.

Students selected to receive the scholarship will be young people identified by their coaches, teachers or peers as one who is a positive influence inside and outside school.

“Jim Rowland has done as much as anyone in this community to develop the growth and character of our students,” wrote Dr. Gordon A. Floyd, interim superintendent. “A contribution to this scholarship fund honors him, and also honors all the coaches, activity directors, and volunteers who have made a difference in the lives of the youth of Fort Smith.”

A graduate of Arkansas State Teachers College in Conway (now University of Central Arkansas), Rowland became the head football and track coach at Darby Junior High School in 1963. Rowland spent three years at Darby before advancing to Northside High School as an assistant coach for football and track. In 1970, he began 12 years as the head football coach and

athletic coordinator at Southside High School.

He served as an assistant principal at Southside before becoming athletic director in 1991.

Rowland was chosen by his peers and a professional association as the Arkansas Athletic Director of the Year in 1999-2000 and received national citations recognizing his administrative leadership in athletics.

When Rowland does speak of his career, it has been mostly to say what has pleased him most is helping students and coaches succeed.

The founders of this scholarship hope the knowledge that donations made in his name will please him, as well. It will demonstrate that Rowland passed on his mission of giving encouragement and support to others.
