You can tell a lot about a city by how it treats its children This is our traditional June “Kids Issue,” published at the start of every summer to let families know almost every opportunity there is for summer fun. The entire feature section of this issue is filled with activities for kids.

You can tell that Fort Smith and the surrounding communities of our readership love and value children. Just count all the free or low-cost activities planned for them!

We also think last month’s passage of an increased millage rate for Fort Smith Public Schools supports the idea that this city values our youngest residents very highly.

We endorsed the measure, along with many other people, and think the election results were uplifting and the most positive of signals Fort Smith citizens could send. This city believes in its future and will, collectively, invest in it.

Thanks to our heroic, once-a-year Kids Issue Editor Brittany Ransom for the prodigious reporting she does to gather so much of this information about activities for young folks. Thanks also to all the many diverse organizations that reported their plans in a timely way, in order that we might publish this extensive guide. Keep this issue all summer as a reference to what’s coming up next. No bored kids, ever!

There’s just as much opportunity for grown-ups to play this summer, too. Check out all the running, biking and hiking and boating out in our beautiful state parks, lakes and waterways. Get out there and have fun!

MUSIC & PERFORMANCE The first half of summer is simply packed with festivals – get ready for the Riverfront Blues Festival, soon followed by the Peacemaker Music Festival.

There are concerts everywhere to choose from, or see them all! Make summer weekend plans around concerts, the Fort Smith Little Theatre’s summer musical, My Fair Lady, or the month-long Artosphere cultural festival held by the Walton Arts Center.

June’s calendar has opportunities for running, craft classes, art exhibits and openings such as the RAM Invitational, plus plenty of chances to enjoy Arkansas’ state parks on hikes and rides. The roar of the cannon excites some and would be scary to others but if you join the artillery at Fort Smith National Historic Site we'll have a great time learning about a exciting job! Come join us and learn about each of the positions on the cannon, their equipment, things about the soldiers themselves, and how to load and fire a real cannon! (Sorry, we can't let you actually shoot it!) Come join the artillery!

When: 10 a.m. June 2 First Fort Scavenger Hunt What: Choosing the location of the first fort at Belle Point set into motion a series of events that defined the unfolding history of Fort Smith for generations into the future. Children will take part in a scavenger hunt at the first fort and identify key features of why the location was chosen.

Well they will if you join us to color and paint with the many different fish patterns that we have! Make your own colorful fish to take home and have some great hands on time with park rangers and other kids!

Stop by any Fort Smith Public Library location to enjoy books, videos, magazines, computers, music and special library programs of all kinds this summer. The summer reading program is designed to encourage reading for pleasure; it will help young people who are able to read independently retain the valuable reading skills they developed over this past school year. Preschool children too young to read may also participate and will receive credit for the books read to them. Campers will learn the basics of conservation and ecology by exploring Lake Fort Smith State Park’s varied habitat of forests, streams, and lake. The park provides all educational materials.

Participants are encouraged to bring a lunch, water bottle, hat, and sunscreen. Admission is $20. Space is limited.

Kayak Adventure Who: Ages 6 and up What: Kayaking is a great way to experience the sights and sounds of Lake Fort Smith and a fun way to exercise. The event is weather dependent. Cost is $15 adults, $10 for children ages 6-12.

Trained experts and skills volunteers offer a number of informative courses throughout the summer, and provide unique programs specifically designed to bring nature to life.

Daily activities include the 2 p.m. Critter Crunch feedings.

Weekly activities include a Nature Break for children ages 3-7 on Friday afternoons, Saturday morning guided hikes, canoe/kayak programs, laser shot and archery instruction.

Canoe and kayak check-outs are available from 8:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday. All activities are free.

They’ve found irresistible treasures for 35 years n 1993, Joan Sloat purchased what had been called Heritage House Antiques. She also bought what little inventory they had when she first started out. On a very small budget, Joan and her husband went to market and bought what they could. Slowly but surely, word of mouth brought shoppers to the new antique shop in town, now well-known Now and Then Shoppe.

“We’ve been blessed. Our customers have been very loyal. People come in and express how they used to come in the shop with their parents to look around when they were little. I really love hearing that from them,” Joan said.

Marty White, Joan’s son, is her partner. He conjures up the beautiful and creative displays that fill the three adjacent buildings on Lecta.

Often Marty will be setting up one of his fabulous displays and customers will come in and want to purchase every piece of it because his design sense is so appealing.

In 1998, Joan purchased the building next door, which had been the Farmer’s Pantry. In 2012, they expanded into the other neighboring building on Rogers Avenue. They are connected now as one continuous cave of treasures.

From room to room, the Now and Then Shoppe offers fine antiques, extraordinary jewelry, home decor, seasonal treats such as their Christmas decorations, bedding and more. Three shared a bond only they knew he professional staff at Ashton Place Health and Rehabilitation Center is also a compassionate group of people who often notice touching moments or even contagious humor from the residents and rehabilitation patients they serve. In fact, quite often they are privileged to witness rare, sweet and very dear interactions.

Earlier this year, several of the caregivers enjoyed seeing a big transformation in three people who happened be at Ashton Place at the same time. Although one of the three has now passed away, the staff members are still smiling about a very joyful friendship the three shared.

The staff members do their best to create a feeling of comfort and being at “home” at the well-appointed facility.

Most people pass through Ashton Place because of a brief need for rehabilitation or respite care. Once they recover from illness, or perhaps regain strength after a surgery or complete physical therapy to assure safe mobility, they go home. For many fewer, Ashton Place is “home” for long-term care.

In either case, it’s nice for people, while there, to make friends, eat together and enjoy socializing, although it can take a bit of encouragement to get a few people “out there” for meals and pleasant activities.

Sue Lewis’ family members were a little worried to see she was uncharacteristically subdued and perhaps a little depressed. Sue was a bon vivant with a huge, bright smile that matched her kind and very friendly personality.

She just wasn’t fully herself, her son, Mark Lewis, said he had noticed. His sister, Lynda, as well as his wife, Julie, shared his concern.

His mother had spent several years caring for her husband, “Bud” Lewis, at home before his death in 2012, with never a complaint as his health had declined. Mark and Julie had enjoyed having Sue live in their home until a fall made it necessary for her to have physical therapy.

“She wasn’t walking well and she was having meals in her room,” he said.

This was unusual after a lifetime of Sue being someone who deeply enjoyed friends, laughter and fun and who gave years of service in Greenwood, Ark., where she was a pillar of the South Sebastian County Historical Society. Sue was the creator of Miss Sue’s Tearoom, a lunchroom open annually at the Airing of the Quilts, which featured her beautiful tablescapes and offered her popular chicken salad sandwich recipe on the menu.

HEALTHY LIVING She had been an accomplished business owner with Bud. They ran a paint store and their own paint and crafts supply company in Fort Smith. Sue made regular appearances to demonstrate crafts on the former “Noon on Five” TV show.

When she did go to lunch, the big change happened. Sue, 88, recognized long-time friend Allen “Gaylen” Patterson, 91, and Janie Reese Hightower, 89. All had attended South Fort Smith Elementary School in 1935-36.

The Lewises and Gaylen had been friends as adults, although they hadn’t seen each other for 30 years. But both had lost touch with Janie.

Reunited, the memories tumbled out of them with giggling and teasing. South Fort Smith was a close-knit community in their childhood, with a few small stores, modest homes and the grade school. Mark recalled that his mom said that when students caught the bus to Fort Smith High School, they all avoided standing on the side of the street of the former coffin factory.

Gaylen would have graduated from Fort Smith High School in 1944, but enlisted in the Navy and served in World War II. The three ate together often and according to the staff, “acted like a bunch of kids.”And that was delightful to the Ashton Place staff, who encourage people to spend their time doing just as they wish, outside of their therapy. Had Sue wanted to do something like lead a crafts class, Ashton Place is accommodating.

The facility has the ambiance and décor of a fine hotel, with housekeeping services and a hair salon. The grounds are beautifully landscaped and a large gazebo is a popular gathering spot.

Families can gather for meals in privacy. Wi-Fi is provided for tablets and phones.

Although Sue died in January, her time at “home” at Ashton Place came with considerate care and a happy reunion with friends.

DOUBLE CHOCOLATE CHIP ICE CREAM SANDWICHES 1/2 gallon vanilla ice cream, softened to a spreadable consistency 2½ cups all-purpose flour 1 tsp. baking soda 3 tbsp. instant vanilla pudding mix 2 sticks salted butter, softened to room temperature 1/2 cup granulated sugar 1 cup brown sugar 1 large egg 1 large egg yolk 3 tsp. vanilla extract 1 cup mini candy covered chocolate pieces 1 cup mini chocolate chips Colored ice cream sprinkles Line a 9x13 pan with plastic wrap. Spoon softened ice cream into the pan and spread evenly.

Cover with plastic and freeze until firm. While freezing, prepare cookies.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a medium bowl, combine flour, baking soda and pudding mix. Set aside. In the bowl of a your mixer, combine butter, brown sugar and white sugar. Beat on medium speed for 1 minute, until smooth and fluffy. Add the eggs and vanilla and beat on medium speed until combined. Stop the mixer and add the flour mixture. Beat on medium low until a dough is formed. Fold in candies and chocolate chips.

Press about 1-2 tablespoons of dough into the bottom of a muffin tray. Bake cookies for about 10 minutes or until golden all over and dark golden on the edges. Let cookies cool in pan for 5 minutes before removing to cool completely on rack.

Once cookies are cool, cut your ice cream circles.

Using a round cookie cutter, biscuit cutter or drinking glass that is roughly 2½ inches in diameter, cut neat circles in the ice cream. Place one ice cream circle on the flat side of a cookie. Top with another cookie.

Pour sprinkles onto a plate and roll the ice cream sandwich on the sprinkles sideways to coat the ice cream. Wrap in plastic wrap and freeze.

BANANA PUDDING POPS 5.9-oz. box instant banana pudding 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream

2 1/2 cups milk 30 vanilla wafer cookies

In a large bowl, whisk together pudding, milk and cream until smooth and thickened, about 2 minutes. Stir in cookies so that they are mixed into the pudding.

Cover and refrigerate for at least 3 hours.

Remove pudding from the fridge. Using a rubber spatula, stir the pudding, breaking the softened cookies into chunks and mixing them into. Fill 6 popsicle molds with the mixture and freeze for several hours, preferably overnight.

BLACKBERRY MOJITO JELLY CUPS 2 packets plain gelatin 11⁄2 cups cold water, divided 3/4 cups extra fine granulated sugar 5 fresh mint leaves 3/4 cup boiling water

1/2 cup lime juice 1 pint blackberries Whipped cream, mint leaves and lime wedges for garnish

Sprinkle gelatin packets into 3/4 cup of cold water. Whisk to combine and set aside.

Bring 3/4 cup water to a boil. Add sugar and mint leaves, stirring to combine.

Let boil until sugar is dissolved. Remove from heat.

In a medium bowl, combine boiling water/sugar mixture, gelatin/water mixture, 3/4 cup cold water and lime juice. Whisk to combine.

Add blackberries to individual serving containers (and extra mint leaves, if desired). Fill with gelatin mixture and place in the refrigerator until firm.

Garnish with whipped cream, mint leaves and lime wedges.

DOLE WHIP CAKE Cake 1 box French vanilla cake mix 15.25-oz. can crushed pineapple in juice 1/3 cup vegetable oil 3 large eggs Frosting 3 sticks salted butter, slightly softened 1/2 cup pineapple juice 6 cups powdered sugar Yellow food coloring Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter and flour 3 (8-inch) round cake pans and set aside.

Cake: In the bowl of your mixer, beat cake mix, entire can of pineapple and juice, oil and eggs on low speed for 30 seconds. Increase speed to medium and beat for 90 seconds. Divide batter evenly into pans and bake for 20 minutes or until tops spring back when lightly touched in the center. Let cakes cool in pans for 5 minutes, then carefully turn onto racks to cool completely.

Frosting: In the bowl of your mixer with the whisk attachment, beat butter until smooth.

Slowly add pineapple juice, beating on medium low and scraping sides of bowl until combined.

With the mixer on low, slowly add powdered sugar until just barely mixed in. Add a couple of drops of yellow food coloring and increase speed to high and beat for one minute, until smooth and fluffy.

Assemble and frost cooled cake. Chill until ready to serve.

The Fort Smith Riverfront Blues Festival is a Friday-Saturday outdoor concert on the banks of the Arkansas River. But there’s a little pre-festival warm-up on Thursday, June 21, this year at Warren’s Rec Room in Alma to get everyone in the mood for the main two-day concert. Local rock and blues guitarist el supremo Gary Hutchison will Gary Hutchison be joined by a similarly awesome player, Kirby Kelley. Kelley was a much-less recognized player the first time he impressed Fort Smith in Rib Room and Old Town gigs. He almost gave up music when friends, family and supporters urged him to enter a national Guitar Center contest.

Performing in front of blues great Hubert Sumlin, playing with double slides on his fingers, he was named “King of Blues.” When these two collaborate, it will be blues mastery.

The Eric Mathews Band of Fort Smith follows and the festival crowd will discover why it has a large, loyal fan base.

Opening night, June 22, has a line-up led by a Riverfront Blues Society protegé Austin Calvillo, who represented this society as a solo artist in a recent International Blues Challenge in Memphis.

Long-time favorite and local legend Wanda Watson takes the stage for the heart of Friday night. This powerful singer commands her audience with soul and a joyfulness that reminds you that blues music is a rebuke against hard times and pain.

Loyal fans of this festival will welcome back Hadden Sayers, who honed his already impressive chops here for years, as part of his long education on the Wanda Watson road. Sayers is touring behind a recent release titled “Dopamine Machine.” Once a hot hand from Houston, he has deepened over the years and the mileage to a soulful understanding of life and loss.

Franks’ Garage is a big local ensemble with a big sound that comes from an eight-member band of guitarists, bassists, a drummer, a piano player, harp and sax players and multiple singers who can trade leads and solos in a full spectrum of blended personal influences.

Both nights of the festival are held at Harry E. Kelley Riverpark. Ticket options are $15 for single-day admission or a $25 weekend pass to both nights. Tickets are available at the gate.

Vendors will offer food and beverages (ID will be requested). Concert-goers are encouraged to take their own lawn chairs and blankets for seating.

Look ahead to the Peacemaker JULY

After enjoying the blues festival, plan to be at Harry E. Kelley Riverpark again for July’s big event, the Peacemaker Music Festival. This year’s line-up features rock acts Rival Sons and Grace Potter as the Friday and Saturday night headliners. But the whole line-up is exciting and musically eclectic.

Paul Thorn, an artist with a dedicated local following, will open the two-day fest at 7 p.m. Friday night. This Tupelo, Miss., native is decidedly a Southern original. Discovered by fans here as a blues festival guest and very popular club show, Thorn was embraced because of his storytelling songwriting and also as a compelling painter, a folk artist. He has exhibited his art here in a gallery show. Thorn’s music contains both the sinful pleasures of a juke-joint Saturday night and a fire-andbrimstone, come-to-Jesus Sunday morning. He currently has a gospel album but fans know that he vividly understands the kind of vengeful passion that prompts a cheated-on man to burn down the trailer park.

Anderson East’s music is a potent, heartfelt fusion of soul, rhythm & blues, gospel, early rock & roll, and a dash of country. A passionate singer and compelling songwriter, this young man of only 20 is a rising talent. California band Rival Sons call their music “Long Beach rock ’n’ roll with groove, soul and swagger.” They have an epic guitar-backed ballad called “Belle Starr.”

Saturday’s festival opens with the legendary Texas musician Ray Wylie Hubbard, followed by the New Orleans joy of the Funky Meters – yes, originally those Meters with Art Neville and George Porter, now playing with Brian Stoltz and Terrence Houston. The Cadillac Three veer toward long-haired Nashville. They’re doing country their own way.

Rocker Grace Potter closes the festival. This multi-instrumental player built her name on festival stages, gaining an indie fandom and catching the attention of other musicians. The Rolling Stones had her open two shows of their Zip Code tour. She has an electrifying live show.

Since 1977, Old Fort Days Rodeo crowds cheer for the Dandies, young women skilled in horsemanship. As ambassadors for the rodeo, outstanding horsewomen are chosen for their riding skill, character and personality. The Dandies lead the Grand Entry, post the colors and perform a precision quadrille on horseback each evening.

They travel to appear at rodeos nationwide. The Fort Smith Chamber of Commerce formerly sponsored a Rodeo Queen contest. Many local women have fond memories of Rodeo Queen and Sweetheart contests. Rodeo announcer Mike Mathis will give commentary on the competition while professional clown and barrelman John Harrison entertains and helps to protect the cowboys and cowgirls. He has been named Comedy Act of the Year and Coors Man in the Can at the prestigious Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas. All the park’s caves are currently closed to human visitors as a precaution against contamination from White-nose Syndrome, a fungus that has killed millions of hybernating bats in the eastern half of the U.S. and several Canadian provinces. until her death at 98. She painted acclaimed works in subjects and styles as different as modernist cityscapes and her interpretation of barren, beautiful New Mexico desert vistas. She became noted around the age of 30, after having struggled to obtain and complete her art education – not a given for women of her time. Crystal Bridges Museum has acquired Jimson Weed White Flower No. 1, (above) which set a record at auction for the highest price ever paid for a painting by a woman.

More than 30 O’Keeffe works, some on loan from other major museums, are in the exhibit, which contains related works of a select group of contemporary artists that expand on O’Keeffe’s artistic legacy.

This exhibit, titled “The Beyond: Georgia O’Keeffe & Contemporary Art,” has an admission fee of $10 for adults; children under 18 are free. Ingress: Fort Smith Mission Day As part of Fort Smith’s Bicentennial, play an Android phone app and game called Ingress. The on-screen game portrays virtual images set at public landmarks. Players are divided into two teams and given “missions” to complete, virtually. Players may notice or never see the other humans also playing the game, but will interact in on on-screen tasks. While following the game map, players will see the historical American town that has it all. The course of the day may lead to breweries, restaurants, gokarts, a Ferris wheel, free canoe rental or a trolley ride.

Fort Smith National Historic Site will be the location for a group picture to share with the global Ingress game community. Eighteen available missions will send players around Fort Smith. JUNE In its 113th year, the Arkansas Association of Women, Youth & Young Adult

will meet in Fort Smith for three days in June. The association was born of 8-10 Clubs statewide unity for local service organizations founded by black women, who adopted the motto “Lifting as We Climb,” promoting self-help among women. The women of the Fort Smith chapters will host the conference.

During the early years of the National Association of Colored Women’s Clubs, established in 1896, the largely educated and middle-class members supported temperance, positive images of women through moral purity and women’s suffrage, issues also pursued by white women’s groups. The NACWA viewed their women’s movement as a way, also, to uplift black men, women and children. It saw the right to vote as necessary for both genders.

The clubs held war bond drives during World War I and II. The women raised funds for kindergartens, libraries, orphanages and homes for the elderly. They held musical concerts and literary groups. During the Civil Rights era, Arkansas’ clubs provided financial assistance to the Little Rock 9. The contemporary organization combats violence against women, supports healthy lives and workplace safety. Locally, club women are active with mentoring youth and serving the elderly, still following the “Lifting as We Climb” motto.

A featured speaker of the conference will be Heather Woodard of Atlanta, daughter of Fort Smith club member Deborah Woodard and her husband, George. This young professional has 15 years of experience in consumer and multicultural marketing and currently works with H&L Partners as vice president of public relations.

Heather is leading public relations efforts for eight McDonald’s markets, including Atlanta, San Francisco, Orlando and Indianapolis. In this role, she provides strategic counsel for more than 1,500 restaurants and 500 owner/operators across the country. She loves to travel and last month, traveled with her parents to Washington, New York and Paris.

When not working, Heather is active Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., serving as a chapter president. She regards herself as a community servant and child of God who believes that “to whom much is given, much is required.”

Almost as old as this city now celebrating its 200th anniversary, the First Lutheran Church of Fort Smith will mark 150 years of faith and service here with a celebration and nationally noted guest speaker.

Although the celebration marks the establishment of the present-day congregatoion in 1868, a group of German Lutheran immigrants from the region of Saxony moved to Sebastian County even earlier, in 1843. These six families settled in an area now known as Long Prairie, about 12 miles south of Fort Smith, and began to hold services in their homes. As more Lutheran families joined them in Long Prairie, the church community organized a Christian day school for their children in a log house that served as both church and school.

Disrupted by the Civil War, most of the congregation moved into Fort Smith for safety, again holding services in the homes of members.

On June 7, 1868, the present congregation, “The First Evangelical Lutheran Church,” was organized and in that Rev. Ken Klaus, speaker year, sought a minister from the Missouri Synod. The Rev. emeritus of The Lutheran Hour Martin L. Wyneken became its first pastor. The church radio program, will speak at formed a constitution and elected elders and trustees. In the celebration. the next year, the congregation laid a cornerstone and a few months later, dedicated a new wooden church. As early as 1896, the congregation resolved to erect a modern church and with much planning and fundraising, laid a cornerstone in 1902 for the beatiful church that stands today on North 12th and D Streets.

In 1904, the finely crafted stone church with beautiful stained glass windows was dedicated.

Services were held in both the German and English languages. Debt was cancelled on the church building by 1911. In 1914, a brick school building was erected next to the church, replacing a wooden building that had served the congregation since 1874. The congregation and students of this early school were to influence Fort Smith for years to come. The school was moved to a modern campus on the east side Fort Smith, where it operates today and a newer building stand in its place. The public is invited to this historic celebration. Summer Solstice Walks at Spiro Mounds A series of special, archaeologist-led walks around the Spiro Mounds Archaeological Center will start at 11 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Archaeologist Dennis Peterson will lead visitors on a 1-mile, two-hour tour of the pre-Columbian mounds. Learn about the mounds, how and by whom they were created and why some of the mounds align with the solstice and equinox sunsets. Spiro Mounds is a major Northern Caddoan Mississippian archaeological site. Between the 9th and 15th centuries, the local indigenous people created a powerful religious and political center, culturally linked to the Mississippian Ideological Interaction Sphere.

In Fort Smith, the main event is the downtown Farmers Market on the 200 block of Garrison Avenue in the municipal parking lot, open two days every week in peak garden season, rain or shine.

Operating since 2003, this market has grown to have a community of consistent vendors and regular patrons. Tuesday and Saturday mornings, the market opens in very early morning and is mostly packed up by 1 p.m. Locally grown vegetables and fruits, organic or grass-fed meats, beautiful cut flowers, herbs and potted plants, fresh baked goods and honey are available. Only Fort Smith could combine craft beer and running on trails into a popular summer event JULY You have to admit it sounded crazy the first time, but

Fort Smith’s unique festival called Ales for Trails is becoming a classic summer party. Last year Ales for Trails drew more than 1,500 beer enthusiasts and raised $42,000 for the Fort Smith trail system and the festival.

This third annual festival is a response to the great attendance.

Craft beer afficianados will be able to taste more than 400 brews, including the locally crafted Fort Smith Brewing Co.’s roster. Four beer distributors are providing the samples – Arkansas Craft Distributors, LLC., Belle Point Beverages, Inc., Burford Distributing, Inc., and Central and Moon Distributors.

The day includes live music, food, outdoor/active lifestyle vendors, a popular Baggo tournament and the craziest activity, the beer fun run. On the Greg Smith Riverfront Trail, competitors are required to enjoy tastes of beverages on the course.

“We started this festival off on a great note and we want to build on that every year to create a successful fundraiser and a unique beer tasting experience”, says Griffin Hanna, festival director. “Fort Smith is in need of more trail systems, and we hope to continue the construction of the trails with this festival.”

Tickets are available now. $15 general admission, $10 beer fun run registration, a brew pass for $35; both for $45 or a $45 VIP pass. The festival begins at 5:30 p.m. at Harry E. Kelley River Park.

No matter how we make our living, we all can show our civic pride and make a positive impact on one of Fort Smith’s flourishing industries — the hospitality business.

Our city hosts a wide range of events that were only made possible because a local resident decided to step forward and host a convention, meeting or event, showcasing our ever-growing destination and stimulating our economy. These events range from the massive Steel Horse Rally, which just completed its fourth year, each bigger than the one before, to meetings or training seminars supporting the three word mission of the Convention & Visitors Bureau: to “Make New Money.”

Every time someone invites folks who don’t live here to come for a visit, it creates spending that would have otherwise gone to another city.

Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism estimates that in 2017, Sebastian County hosted some 1.5 million visitors who helped improve our economy by more than $10 million.

For a number of years, the CVB has paid tribute to local citizens who bring conventions and events to Fort Smith. We tell their stories on our blog, fortsmithcvb.wordpress.com, where they are dubbed “Hometown Hospitality Heroes.” A perfect example is Sebastian County Sheriff Bill Hollenbeck.

In 2012, he served as head of the Arkansas Sheriff Association host committee, which brought nearly 500 visitors to Fort Smith. Their members made an estimated impact of $400,000 to local businesses that would otherwise have gone to another Arkansas community.

In fact, the delegates enjoyed Fort Smith so much that they are holding their 2018 convention here June 3-5.

“Is it hard work to serve as a conference host?” says Hollenbeck. “Sure is it, but we found out a few years ago that the host committee and association professional staff got a lot of help from the hotel staff and the staff of our partners at the Convention and Visitors Bureau, who helped smooth the path locally for our conference that by nature, has a lot of moving parts.”

“We had a fabulous time a few years ago, and during that time, an amazing number of changes have taken place ... changes that we are proud to show off,” says Hollenbeck. “New running trails, all the Bicentennial activity, a completely renovated hotel (Doubletree by Hilton), and of course the spectacular collection of public art in the downtown area weren’t in place six years ago, so we thought it was time for them to all get caught up with the NEW Fort Smith,” he said.

It’s much the same story for City Director Kevin Settle who helped attract the Arkansas Municipal League to town last January.

“The Municipal League had not met in Fort Smith for 25 years and we had a wonderful time sharing everything our city has to offer,” says Settle. Over the three-day conference, attendees contributed almost $440,000 in impact, which translates to roughly $11,500 in local tax revenue. “A big advantage for Fort Smith is the attitude of hospitality that just seems to come naturally to people in our city,” he says.

Hometown Hospitality Heroes are also saluted as a group each year when the CVB

hosts its annual GRIT Awards (Giving Recognition In Tourism), for their contributions in making Fort Smith shine to their professional colleagues. Many times, convention attendees become future repeat visitors.

The CVB is spreading the message that most anyone is really an event planner at heart.

Whether it’s a birthday party, a wedding or a class reunion, we have all taken on the planning at one time or another to create that perfect event. Our campaign will be asking “Where Do You Belong?” in hope that readers might realize that most everyone belongs to some type of organization whose members and their families would have a great time meeting in Fort Smith.
