River walk joins other iconic images It’s unusual to design a magazine cover without a face on it, especially this magazine.

But we have fallen in love with the transformed “face” of one of the main entrances to Fort Smith – over the Arkansas River onto Garrison Avenue.

The street lights illuminating the new Greg Smith River Walk trail along the river’s edge are reflected into the water. The effect is beautiful and, we think, represents a significant transition.

Every study ever commissioned about improving Fort Smith has asked, “Why are you ignoring your river?”

The answer is, “We aren’t ... give us time!”

After several decades, work done steadily, over time, is beginning to be very visible.

The Fort Smith National Historic Site has expanded gradually until it maintains the riverfront from about the mouth of the Poteau River to the bridge. It also has a wide and wellmaintained walk that hugs the riverfront, opening to a Trail of Tears historical area and to Belle Point, place of origin for the entire city in 1817.

A great deal of effort, over time, went into the creation of Harry E. Kelley Park and then, its upgrade to include the River Park Ampitheater and Events Building. During that process, the late Bert Wright took a backhoe to a swampy, weedchoked inlet near the river park and apologized (maybe) later.

The late Robbie Westphal spent years hauling fill material to the riverfront from that point northward along the river. Then, his family donated acreage of riverfront land adjacent to the river parks for the future U.S. Marshals Museum.

The Greg Smith River Walk, named for the late trailblazing, trail-supporting volunteer, originates at the Events Building and continues past May Branch, pictured in a wonderful photo on page 16 that was given to us by our friend J.P.

Bell, who just happened to be taking aerials when he called us one day last month. Thanks, J.P.!

But there’s more. The new trail connects with the Rice-Carden Levee Trail that carries onward to Fort Smith Park. This helps to make real local trail supporters’ vision of “continuous and connected” pedestrian and bicycle trails, at least in this part of the city.

In the city’s eastern-most neighborhoods, continuous and frequently connected trails are already greatly appreciated and used. Ben Geren Regional Park is even connected to Chaffee Crossing with well-designed trails.

Soon, the city will answer the request of UAFS students and create a “sharrow” or safe bike lane route from the campus to downtown.

All of these feet-friendly spaces offer more ways for Fort Smithians to get out and meet one another. That’s great!

We also have an image, on page 17, of a small but enjoyable “pocket park” that will heal what has been a black eye on the avenue. The site of a burned building in the 900 block will become an outdoor gathering space not far from the new Gen. William O. Darby statue installed just before this magazine hit the stands.

All of Garrison Avenue is looking sharper every day. The lights are coming on in renovated buildings as new businesses move in.

The downtown riverfront trails will give motorists a new introduction to Fort Smith from its western approach subtly by day and strikingly by night. It was already interesting to see the name of the city on the Events Building and the surprising silhouette of a Ferris wheel at the Park at Westend. With this line of shining lights mirrored in the rippling river, it is now spectacular.

That’s a new “face” we think is worth of a cover.

making Fort Smith stronger

here is another Fort Smith that’s like a city within a city, with its own elected government responsible for hundreds of employees and more than 14,000 members. It is a complex, essential system determining much of this region’s future. At its head is one figure who both directs and serves it. It is the public school district and its leader since 1986 is Dr. Benny Gooden. The superintendent of a public school system fortifies the future city by building up its youngest people.

As he is being recognized for his 50th year in education, Gooden’s daily outlook, as usual, is focused years ahead. “I think it’s critical to remember that education is for a time that we don’t yet know,” he said.

But in the present, the public schools must serve all young people of school age every day of the academic year – every year. In its duty to perform well now while preparing for tomorrow, Gooden can relate the school district to a government. And he thinks this city’s elected leaders and employees have done a pretty fair job over the 30 years he’s been school superintendent.

“I’ve seen some really progressive things the city has accomplished in spite of all the chaos that frequently accompanies city government. We’ve had some good city leadership over the years,” he said. School and city interests overlap particularly in streets and public safety.

“I remember when around most of our schools there were no traffic signals. Now, we have turn lanes and traffic signals and have improved lots of the infrastructure of neighborhood streets,” he observed.

While maintaining and improving existing schools, the school district must predict the likeliest needs for new facilities in both the short and long term. After study, the school board recently decided not to plan, at this time, to build a third high school. But such decisions are regularly revisited.

“I’m bullish on Fort Smith,” Gooden said. “We have so many amenities, a great location, we’re poised for runaway growth. I’ve seen it happen in other places where two interstates cross. We have lots of good people, clean water and clean air. This is a great place.”

He has to direct the school district, however, exactly as it is today.

“You have aha moments,” he said. “One of my first wake-up calls was

Dr. Benny Gooden fortifies Fort Smith starting with its youngest people 25-plus years ago. I was in an elementary during the first week of school.

There was a little person, a kindergartner, standing in the hall crying uncontrollably. Staff members were attending to the child and I asked, “What’s the problem?’ They said the child didn’t speak a word of English and was frightened. We worked that out – because we had some people who could communicate. I realized we had to make those little people comfortable. Between 4,000 and 5,000 students go home where English is not their household’s first language. We are a very diverse school district,” he said. “When you put all that together, we resemble America.”

In 1964, before immigrant students were common, Gooden began teaching during racial desegregation in Alma. Rhonda Gray, retiring chair of the English department at Kimmons Junior High, was an Alma student then. She said his influence upon her was profound and lasting.

“There were 15 little black students who integrated the school,” she recalled. “We were terrified ... Benny Gooden came along as a music teacher. I’ll never forget – he looked at me and said, ‘You have a voice.’ And I said thank you. Then, he said again,‘No. You have a voice.’”

Gray spoke on a video made for Gooden’s national recognition by the American Association of School Administrators. In 2014, he was one of three top administrators in the country honored for “exemplary leadership throughout their career.”

As she speaks, the video shows yearbook photos of Gray, then Rhonda Vanlue, as the lone black member of a choral sextette and in the choir with only two other black students. A young Gooden stands with them.

“This is one man who paid attention to me as a person. He gave me an opportunity to excel in a time that a lot of young black kids were not afforded that opportunity,” she said. “That is a lot of the reason that I got through school sane and whole.”

Meeting the right of every child to an education included, during Gooden’s tenure, equal opportunity for kids with disabilities. This school district then pioneered alternative education to guide students with behavioral, attendance and academic problems to a diploma or GED. The alternative education plan developed here is a model for the state.

“We’ve gone from a period of time when access to schools was the issue.

Now, we want proficiency and, now, we want every school to perform to a prescribed level,” Gooden observed of his half-century in education.

Differing, sometimes legislated, standards have put schools on the defensive to fight to define their performance on their community’s terms.

As superintendent, Gooden has responded to every rating system by holding up the success of its fine teachers in educating all students.

“Teaching is a frustrating field because you have so many people who perceive themselves to be experts,” he said. “Sometimes, when you look at some of the things they suggest against the timeline of your life, you know we’ve done that before and it didn’t work.”

He could have said much more, and does, as he is directly accountable to the school board, students and their parents. But beyond this district, he has been effective at pushing to improve the evaluation that state and federal bodies may impose. It’s one of the reasons for his national recognition by his colleagues in education.

The district’s responsibility to every child is more compelling to him than ever-changing metrics. He reserves higher concern for the “whole” student and the way school can prepare each child for life.

“Talking to people in the business community, whole industries have changed through automation and increased technology – all those things that we see as advancement also compel us to teach those

things,” Gooden said. Educating students to master digital technology is the ever-progressing demand schools must meet in real time.

Today’s schools must rigorously educate and create eager and life-long learners, he said. “Fifty years ago, if you quit high school, it didn’t matter so much because if you were willing to work, there was a job out there. Now, as technology and skill levels in all areas of employment have changed, the expectation is that you’d better present some skills or someone else will.

That’s a change. We have to respond to that.”

In his tenure, the district has provided the new tools and teacher training to embrace computer technology. Under his leadership, all schools are retrofitted to support the expanding use of technology and have access to comprehensive wireless technology.

He also continues to develop the invaluable partnership of the district and the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith.

“One of the gems in this community is access to UAFS. This community and its young people can be so much more because of their access to affordable higher education,” he said. “You can go to $60,000-a-year schools and get a big credential and earn a good living.

However, you can stay right at home and get an affordable education here. For a lot of our youngsters, that’s a real asset.”

This region is wise to have supported UAFS, he said. “The relationship we’ve had with it from the beginning has been very positive. When we worked with college president Joel Stubblefield to develop the Western Arkansas Technology Center, it became a really powerful thing.” Students who want to enter the leading field of health care, especially, benefit from using WATC, he said. Concurrent college credit is available also on both high school campuses in English, college algebra, psychology, sociology, speech and humanities in classes taught by UAFS instructors.

While rapidly adapting to change, Gooden strongly supports a classic fine arts curriculum. As a music teacher, he is eloquent about its value for its own sake and for the related academic achievement shown in students who take the fine arts.

“We have to have a quality of life and that’s where I look at the fine arts.

Whether it’s visual, murals downtown; whether it’s an art center or the Fort Smith Symphony – the schools have to be part of that. The number of students participating in our bands, choirs and orchestras is at the highest level in history. If you had told me 25-30 years ago we would have over 1,100 students in orchestra, I would have said, ‘It will never happen.’”

“One of the best things we’ve done is to install electronic keyboard labs in every elementary school. This was an opportunity to give every elementary child in Fort Smith an experience learning keyboard – an experience they might not otherwise ever have. Barry Owen, assistant superintendent for instruction, says that is one of the big contributors to our growth in bands, choirs and orchestras,” Gooden said. “I wish that had been my idea but it wasn’t. It was our elementary music teachers,” he said.

“Any success I’ve had has been a direct result of the good people with whom I’ve worked.”

Music education enriches the whole person, he believes.

“Those are the kind of experiences that kids can take with them forever.

With a fine arts education, these kids can play music all their lives,” he said.

At 71, Gooden may soon consider retirement. Gooden will say he will enjoy the full-time company of his wife, Martha, his children, grandchildren and his beloved Boxer dogs.

But anyone who knows him believes he will continue to passionately support public education and contribute to the success of the Fort Smith Public Schools.

Schools and community benefit from volunteer Children’s Champion

F

or the three years his grandson attended Darby Junior High School, every time Jerry Carson checked in at the school office, the staff asked, “Where is the band or orchestra going today?”

Last year, Carson, 80, got a call from Gordon Manley, band director at Northside High School, who asked if Carson would be president of the band parent organization. Carson agreed, then learned the first meeting was in two hours.

He also took over the band’s concession stand when a previous volunteer stepped down.

For this and many years of service he has given at his grandson Kyle’s schools, starting at Ballman Elementary, Carson was honored with an Arkansas PTA award that names him a “Children’s Champion.” Manley was one of the people who nominated Carson.

Saying “yes” and following through is long habit for Carson. In 2001, he was 66 when he made a commitment to raise Kyle, who was then 2. Carson’s son, Kyle’s dad, divorced when Kyle was a year old. Struggling with custody difficulties and a demanding career, he appealed to his dad, probably sure of his answer.

Saying “yes”to help is such a natural part of his life that Carson had to think before answering how he began assuming such responsibilities.

“Part of it is that I grew up in the church, where you did for other people,” he said. He was raised in Fort Smith and spent his career in California as a teacher, where he and his former wife were in 10

the civil rights and peace movements. They met people of the Quaker faith, which he joined.

“A couple of months ago, I was asked to speak about Quakers at the interfaith dialogue group,” he said. “One thing I stressed was what you learn almost by osmosis at Quaker gatherings: God doesn’t hold us responsible for the things we don’t know about. But once we learn about social injustice or need, the question is raised – as it is phrased by the old Quakers – ‘Now that thee knows, what will thee do?’ ” This principle led him to volunteer with families of AIDS patients in California and here, after retirement, with the Gregory Kistler Treatment Center, at Trusty Elementary as a twirling teacher and tutor, at Parker Elementary as a reading tutor and as an ESL teacher with the Literacy Council and in numerous other ways.

Carson spent years as a distinguished baton twirling teacher and judge, traveling to summer camps and contests, often with one of his daughters. Naturally, he enjoys Kyle’s participation in band because of his long affinity with bands, drum corps and twirling. Kyle also plays cello so he chaperoned on orchestra or band bus trips.

“I have especially loved the band trips. Those kids are really funny. When I was helping Angie Clark, the director, with the Darby band, most of the kids didn’t know who I was,” he said. “One of them, once, asked whose father I was. I said I was Kyle’s grandfather. She said, ‘I thought you were Mrs. Clark’s daddy.’”

“I don’t think I ever have had to discipline or even call down a kid from Darby or Northside. I have had bus drivers tell me that Darby kids are their favorites to drive,” he noted.

Carson has taken Kyle along at times to hand out bananas at the Sack Lunch program and himself bakes and distributes muffins there made by his friend Janis McClure and others at Central Presbyterian Church, where he now attends. She recently provided 500 cupcakes for the band’s concession stand, he said in gratitude.

His band trips may end when Kyle graduates in 2017; painful knees are plaguing him, even though he exercises daily. The bus steps are getting a little high for him, he admitted.

He finds his grandson showing concern for others and has been pleased to quietly see Kyle giving kids a ride or inviting them home to eat.

This summer will be less hectic when Kyle goes to the West Coast to visit his dad. After college, Carson thinks Kyle may go into his father’s field of computer technology. It’s possible, but not likely, that Carson will try to slow down a bit, then.

Carson is inspired by a resilient woman profiled in the “Foxfire” books of Appalachian folkways.

“She was an old lady named Aunt Arie who lived up in the mountains alone, completely dependent on herself,” he said. “I was fortunate enough to hear one of her oral history tapes. In this quaky mountain voice she says, ‘I can’t hardly do none of what I used to do, but I can still love.’”

Seniors hand-picked by chancellor are ready to graduate Contributing writer Paige Stewart reflects on a unique UAFS student experience

F

our years ago, my cellphone lit up with the University of ArkansasFort Smith’s number. With sweaty palms and a racing heart, I answered. The next five minutes on the phone were crucial in determining my future; would I be offered UAFS’ most prestigious scholarship?

With a sigh of relief I jumped around my room in complete shock and excitement. Not many students receive a full-ride scholarship to college, but on that day I – and 16 others – received the opportunity of a lifetime, the Chancellor’s Leadership Council Scholarship (CLC).

The CLC is a highly competitive scholarship for students demonstrating strong leadership skills and high academic performance.

The students chosen must have a desire to take leadership roles on campus and within the community. All incoming freshman in the program must participate in a leadership retreat prior to the first day of classes and then complete the leadership course taught by Chancellor Paul. B. Beran.

“I pick people who have a predisposition to leadership and who have a sophisticated and intellectual view of the world. What I hope happens from the CLC experience is that students will learn how to think for themselves and learn how to view the world as an adult, which will then lead into the ability to talk about the world and its issues as an adult,” Beran said.

Over the past four years as a CLC member, my classmates and I have developed into more intelligent and cultured young adults. This scholarship teaches more than leadership – it has prepared us for our upcoming graduation and entrance into graduate school or the work force.

Fellow members of my graduating class have had their own unique viewpoints on the scholarship and their personal experiences.

“I chose the CLC scholarship because I saw a group of people that believed in me. UAFS was an opportunity for me to claim my own identity on a growing campus with people who cared about my education and future. I was intrigued by the idea of being mentored by the chancellor and gaining connections through the program,” said Allie Wilson, a marketing major.

The CLC is not only a scholarship group, but a chance to explore many opportunities. “The support system and training I received as a member of CLC gave me opportunities beyond my imagination,” Matthew Farrar said. “I was encouraged to seek out opportunities others were not taking that would ultimately showcase my talents. This would lead to three study abroad and internship opportunities in China, Spain and South Korea.”

Some students of the 2016 class are seeking careers immediately after graduation while others have received acceptance into graduate school.

Giau Pham, a biology major, is currently working on both. After graduation, she will relocate to California where she will live one year to receive in-state tuition for optometry school.

“I’m taking a year off from school to move to California. I already have my tickets booked and I’m really excited! I’m hoping that by having this scholarship background, it will help me get a job in California,” Pham said.

“The job force is difficult, but if you have experience in leadership and are connected with other leaders, such as Dr. Beran, it could make it easier to find a job.”

CLC provides more than full tuition, it gives incoming freshmen the chance to begin college as part of a family. A week before classes began, we all met as strangers on a bus headed for Petit Jean Mountain. Three days later, we returned a close-knit group. Though we must part after graduation, we have made memories these past four years that will last a lifetime.

“My fondest memories have to be when I studied abroad in Salamanca, Spain, in 2014,” Allie Wilson said. “The experience is something I will never forget and has given me an education far beyond explanation. I loved joining my classmates for the journey and creating memories we will hold for a lifetime.”

The first semester of freshman year brought us closer together, but even when our entry leadership course ended in December 2012, we continued to see one another. CLC offers built-in friendships and support systems.

“When I started college, I was worried if I would make any friends.

CLC changed all of that,” said Katelyn Staggs, a math major with a teacher’s licensure. “I made a bunch of new friends at the retreat, so I was prepared on day one. Throughout my college career, those friends have always been there as a support system that I never could have dreamed of.”

The Chancellor’s Leadership Council Scholarship is the greatest college journey I could have ever dreamed of. A family, unimaginable connections to a variety of leaders in the community, a chance to visit directly with those who paid for our tuition, the chance to travel abroad, and an immeasurable ... That’s how I’ve amount of collegiate one-on-one chosen them, to education are only a few of its perks.

“It has given me the confidence to be the best. achieve my personal and educational goals, to never stop gaining knowledge of the things that interest me, and to never back down from what I believe in,” said Landon Williams, an animation technology major.

The graduating class of 2016 is characterized by the ways its members have conquered all obstacles together.

“Every CLC class just adds to the best because that’s how I’ve chosen them, to be the best. This particular class is one of the most diverse classes.

Some are graduating in science, some in business, some in the humanities and some in technology. They are making things happen whether it is in an organization or informally,” the chancellor said. “I think that they have been able to leverage the strength of the group and learn from each other, but then disperse from the group and use that strength they have gathered in very diverse areas. I also see many people staying friends beyond all of the directions they have gone.”

CLC is the foundation to what has been an amazing college career and together, as this year’s graduating class, we encourage high school seniors graduating in 2017 who are competitive and strong-willed to apply for this scholarship. Reach for your dreams and never let anyone discourage the goals you wish to achieve.

“CLC was a support system I had never had. I just had myself to rely on,” said psychology major Savanna Robinson. “A whole team of highly educated professionals decided they thought I could do this. They believed in me, which convinced me I should believe in myself, too. I learned how to accept help from others and the importance of giving back. I’m excited about my future and I’ll always remember the Chancellor’s Leadership Council gave me a helping hand when I needed it most.”

Tony Jones studied in Spain through the CLC program. For this magazine, Jones reported on the national Boy Scout Jamboree as a Southside High School student. He plans to attend law school at the University of Arkansas.

UAFS donors, supporters thanked at Lion Legacy Celebration

T

The University of Arkansas-Fort Smith recognized its donors and supporters for their philanthropy last month during the UAFS Foundation’s new premier donor event, the Lion Legacy Celebration.

The event, held in the Stubblefield Center, took the place of the previous G.C. Hardin and scholarship banquets, melding them into one signature donor recognition event honoring the university’s generous supporters. Donors help fund more than 200 foundation scholarships at UAFS benefiting more than 500 UAFS students.

The honored guests heard from students, as well as Judy McReynolds, chief executive officer of ArcBest Corp. and chair of the UAFS Foundation Board; Chancellor Dr. Paul B. Beran and members of the UAFS Foundation. All lauded the donors’ contributions to the school and

described the positive effects their contributions had made to students’ lives and college careers.

“The UAFS Foundation works hard to be a good steward of the gifts we have received,” said Dr. Mary Lackie, vice chancellor for university advancement and executive director of the UAFS Foundation. “An important part of that stewardship is thanking our donors, especially by showing them the impact of their philanthropy.”

One student who felt that support was Tony Jones, a Fort Smith native who came to UAFS on a Chancellor’s Leadership Council Scholarship as well as a Farrell-Cooper Mining Scholarship.

Jones spoke to those gathered at the ceremony about the importance of the scholarships that made college a reality for him and the opportunities he had found through UAFS. “Because of you, I have gotten to step foot in a

Hrair and Liza Simonian share a common goal: to give their children a wealth of experiences throughout their adolescence. Parents to 11-year-old twins, Pierre and Izabelle, 9-yearold Leo and 18-month-old Eliza, the couple makes the most of their already busy schedules and encourages their children to stretch themselves in new ways all the time.

emy, where he serves as his team’s goalie. The children participate in other sports throughout the year, including basketball. In addition to their after-school commitments, the twins are both student council officers at Christ the King Catholic School: Izabelle serves as vice president and Pierre as treasurer. The oldest three routinely are called as altar servers at school and at church.

The children also play chess after school during the week and compete in annual competitions.

“We have a lot going on, but I feel these extra-curricular activities are helping them and making them into more self-sufficient, confident people,” Liza said. Hrair added, “Education is very important to us and we believe these experiences are beneficial and will help them to be more advanced.”

The youngest of the bunch, Eliza, happily tags along with her mom and siblings. “Thankfully, she is a really good baby,” bragged Liza. During the school day, Liza makes time for just the two of them. “I was so busy with the older three, especially since they were so close in age.

This time, though, I am able to slow down a bit and just enjoy her and this stage.”

While he may miss out on evening meals and afterschool activities, Hrair is committed to carving out time each day with his children.

“I take them to school every morning and that is something that is very important to me,” he said. “I love that five to 10 minutes I have with them in the car.”

And weekends are for family time.

“We go to dinner and movies. I wait until the kids are home and in bed before I go back to the hospital to make my rounds,” Hrair said. “My patients all know they aren’t going to see me until night, unless there is an emergency.”

Last year, the Simonians took a Disney Cruise and, during the holidays, they visit California to spend time with Hrair’s family. They spend Pierre in “Schoolhouse Rock.” summers in London with Liza’s parents and sister. Even during their vacation, the children stay active, including doing theater in London. This summer, Pierre, Izabelle and Leo will push themselves outside of their comfort zone and attend their first-ever summer camp. “None of us are really outdoors people, but we want this to be something our children experience and appreciate,” Hrair said.

“I am so grateful for my wife and all that she does for us and for our children and I appreciate their understanding of my job and how I work to be able to provide for our family so we can do all of these things.”

Liza reciprocates, thankful for Hrair’s commitment to his patients and to their family. The two also share great joy watching their children grow.

Greg Smith River Walk attracting feet before official opening

I

n the same trail-blazing spirit of Greg Smith, walkers, runners and bikers are out on the new riverfront trail named for the long-time trails volunteer, even before its official completion and opening ceremonies.

Completion of the 1.6-mile riverfront trail segment has required the perseverance of municipal government, non-profit Parks Partners and the fundraising group Friends of Recreational Trails, through obstacles such as funding shortages, flooding and construction disputes. But those difficulties can soon be forgotten by anyone who starts down the 12-footwide paved trail that begins at the River Park Events building and strolls along the banks of the Arkansas.

With its long line of attractive lighting, the trail itself creates a new and beautiful vista as cars approach Fort Smith over the J. Fred Patton Bridge at night. The lights reflect into the Arkansas River, tracing its edge.

Features on the trail Along the trail are occasional benches and shaded shelters inviting walkers to pause and enjoy the view. Even though the downtown skyline and traffic along Clayton Expressway are visible from the trail, the urban landscape fades away as walkers look toward the river. The trail passes the site of the future U.S. Marshals Museum. The wide walkway can accommodate cyclers and families pushing young children in strollers.

Runners can easily maneuver around slower traffic without breaking stride.

A much wider swath is cleared of growth on either side of trail providing excellent visibility and safety.

become a favorite location for photographers, marriage proposals and enthusiastic rock-dropping by children. Stone steps descend to a fishing area. Across the bridge is a shade shelter with seating.

Shortly beyond May Branch is the end of the trail portion named for Greg Smith, the late, long-time trails volunteer and advocate.

But the riverside route continues on the existing Rice-Carden Trail another 2.5 miles to connect with Fort Smith Park. Paving of that trail achieves a “continuous and connected” trailway envisioned by all the supporters of trails.

“With that connection we’ll have 5-6 miles of trails with parking lots at both ends plus a parking area in the middle. That becomes kind of a destination trail,” said Drew Linder, chairman of the Trails and Greenways Committee. With its close proximity to downtown, trail users are conveniently close to a meal or a beverage in local establishments, he said.

Trail believers voting with corporate contributions More than $1 million had been collected by early 2016 by Friends of Recreational Trails to supplement the city’s trails budget and the effort continues. Fundraising was a response to a 2015 election in which a measure to divert a percentage of the 1 percent street tax to trail development was defeated by a narrow margin. Business contributions make up $870,000 of that amount along with proceeds of both Fort Smith Marathons and a state grant. Contributers include Armstrong Bank, Arvest Bank, BHC Insurance, Blue & You Foundation for a Healthier Arkansas, Richard and Jaunice Griffin, Fort Chaffee Redevelopment Authority, Hanna Oil & Gas, Littlefield Oil, Mercy Health, Propak Logistics, Sparks Health System, Walther Arms and Weldon, Williams & Lick, and a $3 million, interest-free loan from First National Bank of Fort Smith.

Garrison Commons designed as open-air gathering space

T

he fortunes of 913 Garrison had bottomed out when a fire destroyed the building and a diner at the address in 2011. For almost five years, the lot was nothing more than a cleared lot until the artist Vhils created an enormous portrait sculpted on the enormous wall at its rear as a project of the Unexpected Festival of 2015.

In June, it will become a “pocket park” that frames the Vhils mural attractively and provides an inviting urban gathering place.

Studio 6 Architects took the challenge of designing a low-key solution that created unobtrusive improvements to create a space that could include an outdoor dining area, grass, a small stage and outdoor screening area.

“The whole point of the park is to capitalize on the Unexpected mural,” said Scott Hathaway, a Studio 6 architect. He called the park a “gentle” solution. “What we’ve done is try to create something simple but usable with some lawn areas for outdoor events and then the idea of a food truck area for people to enjoy during the day. What we don’t want to do is detract from the mural.”

Landscaping will create a visual boundary without competing for attention, he said.

“The artist does not want the wall lit, so we honored that,” said John McIntosh, spokesman for 64/6 Downtown, a partner in the park project and Unexpected Festival.

“We will highlight the east wall with some small landscape lights and some small string lights on the east side,” Hathaway said. There will be just enough soft light for the right atmosphere.

It will be near a popular new tea and coffee shop, the new William O. Darby monument at Cisterna Park and, undoubtedly, a workday attraction for the employees of Propak Inc. working in the recently renovated FriedmanMincer building at Texas Corner and other nearby businesses. The park will have free WiFi access.

In the evening, McIntosh said a food truck vendor will be open for dinner and the park will be available for reserved or public use. A local food truck operator will soon be announced. The design work includes utilities and an off-street hard surface for the food truck. “There’s a low stage that would be suitable for music,” he said.

Hathaway explained that ABF kindly provided a metal storage pod for the rear of the park that will also be used as a projection platform.

“We’re going to put a projector on top of the

pod to project to a temporary screen on the east wall, he explained. Free movie nights will be another attraction to the park in warm weather.

The minimal design will not prevent any eventual construction on the site, Hathaway said.

“The other thing Steve Clark (of Propak Inc., a donor to the park) was conscious about is that we don’t own the park,” Hathaway said.

“We didn’t want to do anything permanent in nature. Ideally, we’d like to see the facade built back and infill construction there to continue the Garrison Avenue facade. We wanted to be sensitive to that but also capitalize on spaces to use to make downtown a little bit better.”

Plans are to open Garrison Commons in June, if weather permits the construction to proceed on schedule, McIntosh said.

This is the first urban public park project for the architectural firm Studio 6, which is headquartered nearby in newly renovated space on the opposite side of Garrison. Under this name, it is the continuation of the Fort Smith firm most recently called Guest Reddick, which will be 100 years old in 2019 and has always occupied offices downtown.

Western Heritage Month aims for diverse, exciting events in May By throwing a virtual lasso around a month’s worth of community events, the Western Heritage Days committee is encouraging everyone to enjoy activities in the spirit of the “true grit” that characterizes Fort Smith’s history.

Highlights are an art show and a popular mass tug-of-war competition.

WHAT’S COOKING with KRISTAN ROLAND CREAM CHEESE POUND CAKE WITH FUDGE FROSTING Cake: 1½ cups (3 sticks) butter, softened 1 package (8 oz.) cream cheese 3 cups sugar 1/2 tsp. ground nutmeg 1/2 tsp. salt 8 large eggs 2 tsp. vanilla extract 3 cups flour Frosting: 4 tbsp. butter 2 tbsp. unsweetened cocoa powder 3 tbsp. whole milk 1½ cups powdered sugar 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract Cake: Preheat oven to 325 degrees.

Generously butter a 14-cup Bundt pan.

Cream butter medium speed with electric mixer until creamy, 3 or 4 minutes. Blend in cream cheese until thoroughly combined.

Combine sugar, nutmeg and salt and gradually add to butter mixture, continuing to mix at medium speed for about 5 minutes.

Add eggs one at a time, mixing until yellow disappears between additions. Blend in vanilla. Fold in flour by hand in approximately half-cup amounts, followed by blending at low speed between additions.

Pour batter into prepared Bundt pan. Bake 1 hour and 15 to 20 minutes, or until a wooden toothpick inserted in cake comes out clean. Let cake cool in pan on a wire rack for 20 minutes or until pan, though still warm, is cool enough to handle. Invert pan and remove cake. Let cake cool completely, then move to a plate and prepare frosting.

Frosting: In a small saucepan over medium heat, melt butter. Whisk in cocoa and milk until smooth and thick, like hot fudge. Remove from heat and whisk in powdered sugar.

Immediately pour over cooled cake. Let frosting set, and then serve.

RASPBERRY CREAM CHEESE COFFEECAKE Cake: 21⁄4 cups all-purpose flour 2/3 cup granulated sugar 11⁄2 sticks salted butter, slightly softened 1/2 tsp. baking powder 1/2 tsp. baking soda 3/4 cup sour cream 2 large eggs 8 oz. cream cheese, slightly softened 1/3 cup granulated sugar 2/3 cup raspberry jam Glaze: 1 cup powdered sugar 4 tbsp. (give or take) warm water 1/8 tsp. vanilla extract Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray a 9inch springform pan thoroughly with nonstick spray.

Combine flour and 2/3 cup sugar in a large bowl. Cut in butter (you can use pastry blender or your hands), until the mixture is thoroughly combined and makes coarse crumbs. Set aside 1 cup of crumb mixture.

Add baking powder and baking soda to remaining crumb mixture and mix well. In a bowl, combine one egg and sour cream. Stir into crumb mixture, until just moistened. Spread batter in prepared pan, spreading sides so that they go up the edges of pan just a bit.

Beat remaining egg and cream cheese with a mixer on medium speed until smooth.

Spread over cake batter in prepared pan.

Spoon jam evenly over cream cheese, spreading as well as possible. Use a knife to gently swirl the jam and cream cheese.

Sprinkle crumbs evenly over top of cake and bake for about 45 minutes, until filling is set and crust is a dark golden. Cool cake in pan on wire rack.

Whisk glaze ingredients together, adding a bit more water if necessary. Drizzle over coffeecake. Carefully remove sides of pan and serve.

Cookies: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line baking sheets with parchment and set aside.

In the bowl of your mixer, beat butter and cream cheese on medium speed until smooth. Add egg and vanilla and beat until combined, scraping the sides of the bowl as needed. Beat in cake mix and powdered sugar until dough forms, then add coconut and pecans and beat on low until blended.

Scoop cookies using a medium cookie scoop and place on prepared baking sheet 2 inches apart. Bake for roughly 10 minutes until edges are golden brown. Let cool on sheet for 5 minutes before moving to wire rack.

Cream Cheese Glaze: In the bowl of your mixer, beat cream cheese, milk, and vanilla until smooth. Add powdered sugar and beat on medium until a smooth glaze forms. In your blender or food processor, pulse coconut and pecans together a few times. Add to the glaze and mix until smooth.

Spread glaze on cookies.

FEED THE SPEEDY

Attracting these tiny feathered jewels to your yard is easy

orking in my garden in a light rain recently, I was amazed to see a lovely visitor, a hummingbird searching for nectar. This changed everything! This most delicate and beautiful bird inspired me to rethink what to write about this month.

With a little research, I identified it as a Ruby-throated hummingbird, the most common in our area. They are tiny – around 31⁄2 inches long – and weigh only one-eighth of an ounce. Yet, as a migratory bird, hummingbirds fly north across the Gulf of Mexico to visit us, a trip of more than 500 miles in one magnificent flight. What a fabulous excuse to buy plants and nectar feeders to welcome these out-of-town guests.

Hummingbirds are pollinators, the gardener’s helper. As they dip their bills into each flower, pollen that clings to their bills and feathers is carried to the next plant, ensuring that next year when they come to visit your house, there will be flowers to feed them.

Their tongues are grooved and their bills or beaks are narrow and long enough to get to the bottom of flowers. Hummers have an incredibly high metabolism, beating their wings 53 times a second. They are extremely loyal to a feeder. Once you feed them, they will return year after year.

One of the joys of summer gardening is having these jewel-like creatures do a wild fly-by. You will hear the distinctive “hum” of their quickly beating wings that gives the birds their name.

If you love hummingbirds – and who doesn’t? – planting flowers for them is really no different than planting a regular garden. Experts say they are highly attracted to the color red. Fascinatingly, they have little or no sense of smell, but are blessed with an incredible visual acuity to find nectar plants three-quarters of a mile away. Experts recommend red flowers, such as bee balm (Menardia). In my yard, they love black and blue salvia, too.

Because of their unique ability to fly forward, backward and even upside down, some downward hanging flowers such as fuchsia and trumpet flowers are perfect for hummers.

Even if you don’t have a yard, a hanging basket, flower pot or window box planted with colorful blooms can attract hummingbirds. But how about feeders – let’s put some of those around the yard, too. You can go fancy or cheap. I found some people making feeders out of red Solo cups. I also found some incredible, high-end, gorgeous glass feeders.

A neat trick I read about to attract hummers is to use red ribbons on your feeders – or red yard art. I now have an excuse to get a new gazing ball because I will get a red one.

As hummers are very territorial, watching their battles over the feeders is fun. However, it might be kinder to place several feeders around the yard to offer multiple nectar opportunities (and more entertainment).

You can buy pre-made hummingbird nectar or packet mixes but you can also just make your own from a simple recipe of one part sugar dissolved in four parts of boiling water. Cool before filling the feeder. As the weather warms, the syrup can mold or become cloudy. Hummingbird lovers recommend a change of nectar every two days. Wash feeders in very warm water with a one-10th bleach solution. Rinse well and dry before refilling.

I was concerned my hummers would become sugar junkies and stop foraging. Turns out birds are smarter than humans and will not become dependent on easy-access food. They will continue to ingest a fair amount of protein via bugs and insects, so relax and offer as much you want. Each bird is innately taking on enough fuel to sustain them on their long migration. Leave feeders up after Labor Day to help late departers.

The joy of hummers is that you don’t need a large yard to enjoy these amazing creatures. Just provide a nice place for them to visit and enjoy their company while they are here.

Have health, will travel Linda and Leonard Howard relish riding the open road

L

inda and Leonard Howard of Van Buren love to travel, but it wasn't until after their three daughters were grown and Leonard had battled and achieved remission from cancer in 2005 that they could take off and go, go, go. In celebration of Leonard again being healthy enough to travel, they regularly head for some of their favorite destinations in an RV or a pickup with a camper and four-wheeler on board.

“We went on vacations some with the kids when they were young, but we really didn't camp out. We didn't have the equipment, but wished we had because it's a great way to vacation. When our girls were pretty young, we were both too busy working and keeping up our farm to take vacations,” Linda remembered. “Later, we realized how fast time goes by and wished we had savored that time more. After the kids got married and moved away, we started riding horses and taking our horses with us to trail ride and camp.”

After Leonard was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2003, he and Linda spent most of the next two years traveling more than ever – but not for fun. Almost all their trips were to the UAMS Myeloma Institute in Little Rock.

“Leonard just couldn't stand staying in motels or apartments while we had to be in Little Rock, and I felt like I had to go through and sanitize everything where we had to stay before either of us felt like it was clean enough,” Linda said. “Then, we ran across a good deal on a small trailer, bought it and loved it. After that, when we had to be in Little Rock, we could camp out in our trailer at Maumelle and, between treatments and appointments, spend time in the fresh air.”

The Howards didn't begin getting to see parts of the United States they had longed to visit until after Leonard achieved remission and Linda had taken an early retirement from her long-time position as Crawford County circuit clerk at the end of 2006.

“I really loved my job with the county, but I felt like the Lord was leading me to retire so that Leonard and I could spend as much time together as possible ... and I've never doubted I made the right decision,” Linda said. “I wanted to be home to make sure Leonard ate right, to call his doctor and start preventative meds if he started getting sick – and to make sure he didn't work too hard – which is easy to do when you have a 25-acre farm to take care of. I told him I didn't know how much time we had left together but I didn't want to miss a moment of it.”

“His immune system is still compromised, and probably always will be.

But maybe the happiest day in my life was at 9:15 a.m. July 21, 2005, when Dr. (Bart) Barlogie at UAMS gave us the news that Leonard was in complete 38

remission,” she said. “Leonard does still have recurring respiratory issues, and probably always will, but we both thank God he is still in remission.”

In 2007, the couple drove by RV to Alabama, Georgia, Florida, North Carolina and the Smoky Mountains. Their first stop on the trip was a visit with one of Linda's sisters who lived in Wetumpka, Ala., where they were joined by two more sisters and a brother-in-law.

“We all stayed there a week then took our RVs to Savannah, Ga., and stayed at the state park there for a week. We saw beautiful sites there, and of course, had to eat at Paula Dean’s restaurant,” Linda said.

From there, she and Leonard visited South Carolina then moved on to Tampa to see more family. Three weeks later, they found an RV park in Gainesville, N.C., in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Parkway and Smoky Mountains. At Gainsville, there was a Festival of Nations and a Cherokee festival under way with street dancing and music on the town square. The Howards met many new friends with whom they stay in touch.

At Maggie Valley, the couple saw elk and continued to Gatlinburg, Tenn., to follow the Blue Ridge Parkway. “We loved seeing those Smoky Mountains and the smell of flowers everywhere there before we began our journey back home,” Linda said.

In 2008, they began camp hosting at state parks in Arkansas, two weeks at a time, at Bull Shoals and Lake Ouachita. “We did that for four years,” Linda said. “It's not a paid job, it's volunteer work, and getting to stay at the park for free is the only compensation. But it was fun meeting people from all over the world and finding out why they chose to visit Arkansas.”

In 2014, the couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. The following June, they ventured out again.

“We went through Colorado and visited friends, then on to Ouray, Silverton and Durango. From there, we went to Utah and on up to Oregon and stayed a week with family before moving on to Canada and Alaska.”

They have visited at least a dozen states and hope to add many more to their itinerary. On their current to-do list of travels are Colorado Springs, Pikes Peak and the Grand Canyon.

“I'd like to go to Hawaii someday, too,” Linda said, “but we can't take our camper there. So, instead we want to see more of the other states, and their scenic waterfalls. We love waterfalls, and since Arkansas is so blessed with many beautiful lakes, mountains and waterfalls, we can travel more in-state, too.”

The Leonards have lots of reasons to stay close to their rural Crawford County home. Their three daughters, Tyrina McCain and husband Mike, Teri Cunningham and husband Scott and Tanya Hoffsommer live within walking distance. Three granddaughters attend Alma schools: Bailey Hoffsommer and twins Kelsey and Kayla McCain. Two more granddaughters, Brooke Hoffsommer and Falon Hanson, attend University of the Ozarks in Clarksville. The Leonards attend as many of their granddaughters’ many activities as possible. They volunteer in Alma and Fort Smith for community projects.

The Howards have cruised in and fished the cold streams of Alaska and traveled to other scenic states. Their next trip will be down Van Buren’s Main Street in a yellow buggy during its upcoming rodeo parade.

Before their next long trip, Howard and Linda are working on a project that will only take them as far as this year's Van Buren rodeo parade.

“Six years ago, I met for the first time my uncle Joe McCormick, who lived in Sweetwater, Texas. He had a yellow buggy on his front porch that I fell in love with and tried to buy from him, but he said no,” Linda explained. “Then I joked that I might have to steal it then, because it sure would look good behind my Appaloosa. But he just laughed again and said, ‘No! It needs to stay on my porch.’ ” In 2014, Joe's son Bobby surprised Linda by delivering the wagon to her.

Her uncle Joe had died, Bobby said, and he had told his son he wanted Linda to have the wagon. So, Bobby had loaded it up and personally delivered it to her. Now, Linda and Leonard are trying to train their Peruvian horse to pull that wagon in time for them to drive it in the Van Buren Rodeo parade this month. And being able to make that trip will depend on that horse!

The Fort Smith Symphony performs for its loyal audience the world premiere of “Primal Silhouettes” by American composer Brice Johnson in its final concert of the season.

Johnson, who is now attending Arizona State University in pursuit of his Doctorate of Musical Arts in Composition, was commissioned by the Fort Smith Symphony to compose “Primal Silhouettes.” Brice is also an avid percussionist, having performed with many ensembles, including The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, The Marion Philharmonic Orchestra, Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre, The Jordan College of the Arts Composers Orchestra, the Butler Graduate Percussion Quartet, The Indiana Wesleyan University Symphony Orchestra and Wind Ensemble, and the IWU Percussion Ensemble.

Sammy Peters Exhibit: Then and Now Twenty-three works by Sammy Peters, whose work has been featured in exhibits from Sante Fe to New York, will be on exhibit. With numerous awards and fellowships, including the MacDowell Fellowship in 2000, Peters has built a successful career as a result of his abstract paintings. The pieces, arranged Unexamined Stereotypes chronologically, span from 1962 through 2016, a survey featuring “one of the most noteworthy artists in the nation,” according to Don Lee, head of the Art Department at the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith. A Little Rock native, Peters has exhibited his work across the nation, including galleries in New York, Atlanta, Memphis and Sante Fe. In 2015, there were approximately 2.7 million nurses in the United States. Arkansas issued 53,000 licenses in-state for all levels of nurses in 2015. This breakfast is open to all nurses – active, inactive, retired or student. The topic is A Journey with Autism, presented by speaker Sherri Pannell, parent of a child with autism. May 7 Program with Judge and Mrs. Isaac C. Parker In celebration of Western Heritage Month, join re-enactors Floyd and Sue Robison for a program on Judge Isaac C. Parker and his wife, Mary O’Toole Parker. The Parkers will discuss their roles as community leaders during their lives in Fort Smith. The Robisons have researched the Parkers extensively. A special, temporary exhibit will feature china bowls that belonged to the Parkers and the judge’s gold and diamond stickpin from the museum's collection.

The bowls were given to the Robisons by Jymmye Bercher, as longtime friend of Mary Clendening, the Parker's granddaughter. Judge Parker was born Oct. 15, 1838, in Barnesville, Ohio. He studied law, passed the bar exam in 1859 and began his legal career in St. Joseph, Mo. Parker was elected U.S. congressman from Missouri for two terms. When appointed by President Grant in 1875, Parker began his historic tenure as federal judge for the Western District of Arkansas, a post he would hold until his death in 1896. 38th Birthday Bash & 11th Annual Archaeology Day May 9, 1978, was the opening day of the only prehistoric, Native American, archaeological site open to the public in Oklahoma. Archaeologists will look at collections to help identify artifacts. Native American artist are expected to show their wares. Lectures will occur during the day. At 1 p.m., archaeologist Dennis Peterson will lead a guided tour of the site. The mounds are one of the most important Native American sites in the nation. The prehistoric Spiro people created a sophisticated culture that influenced the entire Southeast. Artifacts indicate an extensive trade network, a highly developed religious center and a political system, which controlled the entire region. Located on a bend of the Arkansas River, the site was a natural gateway from which the Spiro people exerted their influence. The Spiro Mounds site and artifacts are among Oklahoma's richest cultural resources. The protected site included 150 acres of land that encompass 12 mounds, the elite village area and part of the support city. The center offers interpretive exhibits, an introductory slide program and a small gift shop. There are nearly two miles of interpreted trails, including a one-half mile nature trail. Visions, Reflections, Abstractions: Photography by Corey S. Krasko MAY

Photographer Corey S. Krasko’s exhibit will include images from JUNE recent travels in Arkansas, New Mexico and the “big island” of Hawaii, as seen through the eyes and lens of the photographer.

Krasko grew up in Brooklyn, Queens and Manhattan. While serving in the Army Engineers, he learned the basics of photography and darkroom techniques at the enlisted men’s club on the island of Okinawa. While earning a living as a carpenter, woodworker and construction manager in Albuquerque, Krasko also earned a degree in fine art photography from the University of New Mexico.

After graduation, he began a career as a photojournalist. News photography brought him to Arkansas where he was a staff photographer for the Southwest Times Record for about 15 years and then became the campus photographer at the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith. He retired from UAFS in 2014. Krasko has won awards for his photography in both Arkansas and New Mexico. His publication list includes: The New York Times, USA Today, People Magazine, New Mexico Magazine and Albuquerque Living. Krasko lives in Fort Smith. The author first discovered the story of Matt and George Kimes in a conversation about family history with his grandfather in 1985. In 2011, after the passing of his mother, Shepard renewed his efforts to write his family history, rediscovering the brothers and their incredible story. Clayton Conversations: Fort Smith Public Library Experience a time capsule of Fort Smith heritage with the story of the Fort Smith Public Library, whose first chapter began 128 years ago inside the Clayton House. With Mrs. Isaac C. (Mary) Parker as their chosen president, eight women began meeting biweekly in 1888 for social enjoyment and literary study. Founding members of the Fortnightly Club were Mrs. Parker, Mrs. W.H.H. Clayton, Mrs. Hubbard Stone, Mrs. C.M. Barnes, Mrs. Stephen Wheeler, Mrs. C.M. Cook, Mrs. John S. Pack, Mrs. J.K. Barnes and Mrs. D.M. Wisdom. Within three years, the club grew to 25 members and developed a book collection large enough to begin a public library in the Belle Grove School, which was built in 1886 across the street from the Clayton home. When opened in 1892, the library featured 1,100 books. The club went on to build a library in 1907 with a Carnegie grant on the site of Judge Parker’s home. The home had been destroyed in 1898 by a cyclone, two years after the famed judge had passed away. Based on the rich detail of handwritten Fortnightly Club minutes, a Sept. 3, 1890, meeting will be reenacted in the Clayton House formal parlor at 1 p.m. prior to Fort Smith Public Library director Jennifer Goodson’s 1:30 p.m. presentation. Ladies will review an essay by popular Victorian-era writer John Ruskin entitled “War.” Call to reserve seats for the 1:30 p.m. program. May 17 Mythic Frontiers with Author Daniel Maher Author Daniel Maher will discuss the differences between race and ethnicity at a meeting of St. John's Episcopal Church's Ozark Style Mind Stretchers group. He also will perform a few songs from his musical, “Burning Gallows,” and have copies of “Mythic Frontiers” available to sign. May 21 Honoring Those Who Died in the Line of Duty In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week that it falls in as National Police Week. The Fort Smith National Historic Site is honoring fallen officers May 21. Memorial markers will be on the parade grounds honoring each of the officers who lost their lives in the line of duty between 1872 and 1896 while serving the Fort Smith District Court for the Western District of Arkansas. The park is offering a special ceremony that gives everyone an opportunity to honor all officers in the United States. The program will start with a short speech by U.S. Marshal Harold Oglesby and followed by a roll call of officers who have died while serving their communities in the local area. Law enforcement officers are invited to come and be part of the roll call by reading names of those who have died in the line of duty from their departments. The program will finish with a flag ceremony led by the Sebastian County Sheriff’s Honor Guard, a 21-gun salute, and taps by the Fort Smith Police Department Honor Guard. The ceremony closes with “Amazing Grace” played on bagpipes by the Fort Smith Fire Department and park ranger Jeremy Lynch. Free. 11 a.m.-noon. May 27 Western Heritage Month Queen's Tea In celebration of Western Heritage Month, the museum will host a Queen’s Tea for current and former Dandies and rodeo queens. Meet the lovely ladies who have contributed their talent to the success of the Old Fort Days Rodeo in Fort Smith. For many years, the Fort Smith Chamber of Commerce sponsored the contest for Rodeo Queen. The winners were chosen for their ability to sell Chuckwagon tickets. The first queen, Margaret Carolan, was crowned in 1937. Since 1977, each evening during the Old Fort Days Rodeo crowds at the appearance of the Dandies, young ladies skilled in horsemanship leading the legendary Grand Entry. As ambassadors for the Old Fort Days Rodeo, the horsewomen are chosen for their riding skill, character and personality. A quadrille performed each evening during the rodeo demonstrates the remarkable riding skill the Dandies acquire through rigorous training. The talented young ladies lead the Grand Entry, post the colors, perform the quadrille, a square dance on horseback and travel throughout the year to appear at rodeos nationwide. Art on the Border The art show is fulfilling the mission of another community service non-profit, the Classic Charitable Foundation, longtime presenters of the Classic golf tournament, which contributes to three named charities per year. While the first two shows exhibited exclusively Western art, this year will include both that and a wider range of art styles, according to Joan McCoy and Maggie Malloy, show volunteers. Art will range from various forms of glass, fiber, oils, watercolor, pastels, clay tiles and serving trays, baskets, photography, bronze sculptures, acrylic, pottery, and hand-carved wooden works by distinguished artists will be exhibited and offered for sale.
