We’re back and we brought a cast of thousands with us (well,almost) Just ahead of the groundhog, new issues of Entertainment Fort Smith return!

Here is your hand-crafted, bespoke, crowdsourced, authentic, genuine, local magazine.

Are those enough trendy buzzwords for what this magazine has always been?

We think a lot about the ongoing evolution of publication from printed paper to a myriad of clicky devices of the moment. We admit we personally use lots of those.

But as for us, we’re still all about the lasting nature of paper when we’re writing, editing and publishing a magazine about our hometown and region. Monthly publications are not as quickly discarded as newspapers but perhaps not quite as lasting as a hardcover book.

However, we know people will hold onto a magazine forever if their picture is in it, or a story about someone or something they love.

As we met all the folks who were delighted to have their photos taken this month in our multi-day photo shoot, we had to conclude that there’s nothing like some (now) oldfashioned things. We know all the people you readers named as “Favorites” will keep this issue, to remember that many friends, colleagues or customers wrote their name on a paper ballot and mailed it in.

It is such fun to see the reactions of all our Favorites winners. They’re all nervous about having their picture made but shyly pleased to receive this attention.

Being recognized for a business, restaurant or service, especially, tells these hard-working folks that their dedication is noticed and appreciated.

Elsewhere in the February issue, you’ll find lots to do. It’s refreshing to turn the calendar to a new year and a new season.

If your new year’s resolution was to get fit, note that the Fort Smith Marathon is this month.

To reach that kind of goal, perhaps women will consider taking trying the encouraging Women Run Arkansas clinics found in the calendar. Many women have found it fun and even life-changing.

Several activities you’ll find inside are part of Fort Smith’s Bicentennial observation. They range from stuff to do to things to see, such as the continuing John Bell Jr. exhibit at the Fort Smith Regional Art Museum.

The opening night of that wonderful exhibit last month was crowded and lively and full of memories and anecdotes about the late Fort Smith artist. I’m sure many, like me, will go back to enjoy it with more space and time. We do recommend it.

Enjoy this issue full of special people, from longtime volunteers to philanthropists, barbers and chefs. There is certainly a variety! It goes to show that it takes all kinds of people to make up a really great town. It was our privilege to count your votes and meet some of the people you like and admire.

Fort Smith Fortifier of the Year Charolotte Tidwell Antioch for Youth & Family

As the leader of the non-profit organization created to combat local food insecurity, Tidwell is an energetic, positive, hands-on force. She developed a food pantry and community garden that helps to supply it with fresh, healthy vegetables. The pantry provides more than 800,000 meals a year in a community where one in five people are food insecure. A mobile division delivers food to low income elderly, disabled and struggling families. Along with its volunteers, Tidwell is a mentor and leader by example to school children who are shown how to pitch in and make service a lifelong habit.

Kids regularly see Tidwell with a hoe in her hand or a box of food in her arms. And she’s always ready to give a hug of encouragement. Tidwell truly fortifies Fort Smith, making our city stronger.

Young Fortifier London Montemayor

One of the earliest to enroll in the first class of the Future School of Fort Smith, Montemayor is now a junior known as one of the most active and engaged students in the innovative charter school and has traveled with the faculty to conferences and meetings to contribute student feedback and ideas. He embraces the high school’s inventive, engaging style that challenges students to participate in many choices about their own goals and educational paths. Currently, Montemayor is also enrolled in the Western Arkansas Technical Center (WATC) program, a cooperative program with the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith. WATC students earn college credit while stil in high school, taking science and technical subjects. As he describes himself as ever-curious about how things work, he said he has been drawn to engineering. Montemayor wil graduate with the founding class of the Future School.

Nanna’s Iris Garden will soon bloom in every color

T

here are few sights quite as breathtaking as Dianne Jones’ property in the springtime. As owner of Nanna’s Iris Garden near Charleston, Ark., the longtime grower sells thousands of beautiful blooms each year to customers from all over the country.

Jones’ operation is located eight miles north of Charleston, near the Vesta community. There, row upon row of the classic flower can be seen during peak season. Customers faithfully make their way each spring to view the exquisite garden and to take home a perennial to enjoy.

“I have many customers that have come to the garden for years. Some aren’t able to garden anymore, but still enjoy the seeing the blooms,” explained Jones.

Dianne’s passion for flowers was passed down from her parents, Henry and Ellen Reichmann.

The two began the business in the 1980s, when they began selling blooms to local townspeople.

“People just started stopping by. Mom and Dad would dig up blooms and sell to them,” she said.

Word spread and Dianne worked alongside her parents to keep up with the demand. “They started taking orders and I helped them come up with a catalog.” Her parents even traveled to local shows and fairs. “They used to set up at the Farmers Market when it was at Brunwick Place in Fort Smith.”

In the ’90s, Dianne started devoting more time to the business, expanding her own garden. “My husband, Roy, moved the fence three times to make it bigger.”

When her mom passed away in 2004, the couple built Henry a house behind their home.

They relocated his many irises and lilies to the property, but left some mementos in his former garden. “He chose to leave behind more than 200 rose bushes. He was afraid it would hurt them.

They were absolutely beautiful,” Dianne said.

Just as a heart for gardening was passed down to Dianne, she too has seen the same affection for flowers in her own family. Her children and grandchildren have played an active role in the business, often working evenings and weekends to help with harvesting. Even her in-laws have assisted during peak times.

“It is a fun family thing, and I am grateful for it,” she said.

Dianne’s father continued working the flowers as long as he could, until just before his death in August at age 91.

“When he was 90, he was still out there helping with the flowers. He loved to do it. I love knowing that my parents’ irises are in 28 states," she said.

Although it no longer takes orders or offers a catalog, Nanna’s Iris Garden still turns out thousands of pots each year. “We only sell the pots now. Last year, we filled about 6,700 of them.”

Each pot generally has between one to five plants, she said. “Because it is not a greenhouse plant, they can be moved. They are perennials, so they do really well.”

Dianne is excited about another season.

“I still have some customers that started out with my parents and will bring their grown grandchildren to the garden. We have always kept our prices low enough that anyone can afford the flowers and irises. You get to enjoy them year after year, just as I have enjoyed the people that have come to the garden year after year. I am fortunate in that I get not only to see my old friends every spring, but meet new friends that come back the following year and years to come,” she said.

Physician adds new ways to help patients feel and look healthier

fter 30 years of caring for cancer patients, the last 20 of them at her ongoing practice, Fort Smith Radiation Oncology, Dr. Kris Gast found a desire to help patients in more ways and also to offer helpful treatment to patients with other concerns. She has treated thousands battling cancer, continuously Dr. Kris Gast learning and offering the latest in radiation treatments and related therapies. She and her compassionate staff employ a multi-pronged approach to helping patients achieve wellness, which in recent years has included the addition of several new treatments and therapies.

The waiting room has cozy, homelike decor with jigsaw puzzles and a glass aviary filled with living birds. That is the positive tone Gast seeks to set in all interactions, helping patients to feel more comfortable during treatment and in their everyday lives.

“We wanted to add things that will improve our patients’ quality of life,” explained Gast.

She first introduced massage, aimed at reducing stress and to give radiation patients something pleasant to look forward to. Massage therapist Jennifer Stuart is also one of the state’s only certified lymphedema therapists. Her techniques stimulate the lymphatic system in a way that can rid the body of waste material, promote healing and boost immunity.

The practice has also expanded its focus on nutrition and weight loss strategies.

“Often times, patients battling things like breast cancer gain weight from treatments, medicines, etc., and it just adds insult to injury,” explained Gast. “Who wants to go through all that, only to come out on the other side heavier?” she said.

Qualified staff members work closely with patients to discover why they may be gaining weight or struggling to lose it, whether or not they are cancer patients. Patients learn clean eating and participate in 30-day challenges, which help them examine how they fuel their bodies. Many patients have success.

“We have had some that were pre-diabetic, with cholesterol readings in the 200+ range.

After a few weeks, they are no longer in the prediabetic range and their cholesterol has already dropped,” Gast said. Others report a decrease in neuropathy or fibromyalgia symptoms.

A recently added therapy treats bladder incontinence. A device called the Emsella Chair uses electromagnetic fields to contract and strengthen muscles in the pelvic floor.

Other treatments help women with perimenopausal symptoms.

Normal aging can affect the skin’s appearance. Gast’s practice has several techniques to rejuvenate skin on the face and body through a thermal process.

“By heating up tissues, it makes them healthier,” she said. “People see a difference in their skin’s consistency and texture.”

In online videos, Gast has demonstrated several new techniques, such as an Insta-lift procedure to tighten sagging facial skin.

8 oz. frozen sweetened strawberries, thawed and pureed 1 cup crushed ice 1 cup heavy whipping cream 2 cups vanilla ice cream Chocolate syrup Whipped cream

In a blender, combine strawberries, crushed ice, whipping cream and vanilla ice cream until smooth.

Add a generous amount of chocolate syrup to the bottom of two glasses, tipping and turning the glasses to allow the chocolate to coat the bottom and the sides.

Fill glasses with the milkshakes and top with whipped cream.

RED VELVET MILKY WAY BROWNIES Brownies 1 box red velvet cake mix 1 stick salted butter, melted 1/2 cup evaporated milk 15-20 fun size Milky Way Bars

Frosting 4 tbsp. salted butter 2 tbsp. unsweetened cocoa powder 3 tbsp. whole milk 1/4 tsp. vanilla extract 12⁄3 cups powdered sugar 4 oz. white chocolate, melted

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Line an 8x8 square pan with foil. Spray with nonstick baking spray and set aside.

Brownies: Stir together cake mix, melted butter and evaporated milk in a large bowl with a wooden spoon, until smooth. Spread half of the batter into prepared pan. Bake for 8 minutes.

Place Milky Way bars over the entire surface of the bars, then spoon remaining batter over the top. Spread so that the batter covers them completely (you may have to use your hands). Bake for 20 minutes.

Remove from oven.

Frosting: In a small saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Whisk in cocoa powder and milk, whisking until mixture comes to a boil.

Remove from heat and whisk in powdered sugar and vanilla until smooth. Pour over brownies, spreading evenly.

Melt white chocolate and drizzle over brownies. Cool to room temperature, then cover and chill until firm before removing foil and cutting into squares.

STRAWBERRY CORDIALS 24 large strawberries 8 tbsp. salted butter, melted 1/2 tsp. pure vanilla extract 3 cups powdered sugar 4 tbsp. light corn syrup 16 oz. chocolate almond bark Wash and dry strawberries thoroughly.

Line a large baking sheet with wax or parchment paper and set aside.

In the bowl of your mixer, beat butter, powdered sugar, vanilla, powdered sugar and light corn syrup until combined. Stop the mixer and knead the mixture with your hands until a soft dough forms.

Cover bowl with a damp towel. Working with about a tablespoon at a time, roll dough into a ball and flatten in the palm of your hand. Wrap around a strawberry, leaving the stem and the top 1/4 of the strawberry uncovered. Set aside. Repeat until all strawberries are covered.

Melt chocolate coating according to package directions. Dip each strawberry in the chocolate coating, allowing the excess to drip off. Place strawberries on lined baking sheet to set.

For best results, let strawberries sit overnight so the flavors can combine.

Runners will earn their spurs when they finish the fourth annual Fort Smith Marathon FEB The Fort Smith Marathon will go off from a downtown start/finish line as the fourth

marathon, half-marathon and relay racing event, presented by volunteers. The runners will attempt to conquer a scenic but challenging route designed to pass through historic downtown, many diversely beautiful neighborhoods, paved trails and rolling terrain. The course presents several notable climbs and descents (looking at you, Old Greenwood Road near ArcBest!).

Those who finish and wear the distinctive 2018 marathon medal can truly claim they showed “True Grit” for having completed their personal races. This year, the much-anticipated medal design is a cowboy boot with a spinning spur and a Fort Smith 200th Anniversary logo.

The marathon will again present a large Runners Expo on the eve of the race. The expo booths wil be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 10 at the Fort Smith Convention Center at 55 South 7th Street. Dozens of vendors will open pop-up shops offering the latest in running shoes, apparel, tech devices and related athletic accessories.

Packet pick-up and registration will be held from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Saturday Runners Expo at the Convention Center.

On race day, Feb. 11, runners will hear the starting gun at the Fort Smith Pavilion, 100 North B Street, which also is the finish line. Spectators are encouraged to cheer them at the start and the finish and all along the course. Signs and supportive shouting are encouraged at particularly difficult stretches! At the finish line, Fort Smith characters and dignitaries will present the marathon’s unique commemorative medals.

Volunteers can seek a role through the marathon website to help with set-up, tear-down and staffing of traffic control signs and hydration stations. OK Foods and other sponsors provide refreshments and hospitality to racers at the finish line from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. The race will take place rain or shine. Feb. 1-March 14 Saint John’s Bible Exhibit The Heritage Edition of The Saint John’s Bible will be on view at Mercy Hospital. The volume is the first monumental, illuminated Bible commissioned by a Benedictine monastery in the modern era. It was created by scribes in Wales under the artistic direction of Donald Jackson, one of the world’s foremost calligraphers and the senior scribe to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth’s Crown Office at the House of Lords. The Bible was completed in 2011. Its permanent home is the Hill Museum & Manuscript Library at Saint John’s Abbey and University. The book incorporates many characteristics of its medieval predecessors. It was written on vellum, using quills, natural handmade inks, hand ground pigments, gold leaf, silver leaf and platinum. It will be displayed in a case at different locations in the main hospital. Pages will be turned at various times throughout the stay. In addition, it will be displayed at Mercy Orthopedic Hospital, Mercy Tower West and Mercy’s four hospitals in Ozark, Paris, Booneville and Waldron. During some hours the Bible is on display, Bible mentors will be available to supervise visitors while they handle the book and turn pages. A closing ceremony is planned for 2 p.m.

CALENDAR OF EVENTS Feb. 1-April 22 Fort Smith Legend John Bell, Jr. Easily the most recognized works of art created locally, paintings of the late John Bell Jr. are on exhibit in a retrospective of his life’s work at the Fort Smith Regional Art Museum. Paintings, drawings, watercolors and sculpture have been loaned for the exhibit

by Bell’s family and private patrons to offer a sweeping representation of his talent. Bell was an acclaimed American painter and sculptor whose career spanned nearly 50 years. His memories and influences of western Arkansas and eastern Oklahoma are the topics reflected in many of his works. Most familiar will be a selection of original paintings that were reproduced for his popular series of prints, depicting scenes in Fort Smith that include churches, businesses, landmarks and city streets. It also includes earlier pen & ink drawings and oil paintings on large and small canvases, both portraits and landscapes. Bell’s works are comprised of much more than his impressionistic, well-known local landscapes. Exhibit cases even include some pieces created

by Bell for his hobby, model railroading, and an account of his extensive activism for public accessibility for disabled citizens. His advocacy helped lead to the construction of ADA-accessible cabins, trails and docks in Arkansas State Parks. The exhibit is a part of the Fort Smith Bicentennial celebration. Admission is free. Snider comes from a family of writers and storytellers. As a child, she made up stories each night to tell her little sister. Her first was “Bordertown Gypsy” and she will soon release two more. In 2013, Snider and her husband dived into foster care and eventually adopted three children. The five of them live in the country near Fort Smith. When she’s not writing or spending time with family, R.M. enjoys running, playing the piano, operating a clothes closet for foster families, dreaming up house renovations, dabbling in interior design and making up new stories for her children. Branch Library. It will show only a part of her many creative talents. Born in Vietnam, she was a school teacher when the end of the Vietnam War drove her family from the country. They came to the U.S. in 1975 and she studied art in Iowa.

When living in Vietnam in her youth, she had learned fine embroidery and designed and sewed garments such as wedding dresses. Her artistic abilities have been expressed in many forms, including her discovery of food sculpture while on an anniversary trip to Asia. She taught herself the unusual art of decoratively carving fruits and vegetables into fanciful patterns and shapes.

She has held workshops at the library to teach others the art of food sculpture or performed demonstrations of her clever transformations of vegetables and fruits into birds, flowers and other designs. This exhibit will focus on her painting and drawings.

1820 watercolor painting of early Fort Smith returns for bicentennial exhibit FEB

As part of the Fort Smith Bicentennial Celebration, the Fort Smith Museum of History is featuring the only known image of the first Fort Smith: a watercolor executed by artist Samuel Seymour in 1820.

Seymour visited the remote outpost of Fort Smith on the return from the 1819-1820 Rocky Mountain Expedition with Major Stephen H. Long, U.S. Army Engineer. The artist was commissioned by the Army to document the landscape and people of the vast western lands acquired through the 1803 Louisiana Purchase. This small watercolor has been seen in reproduction at the museum and at the Fort Smith National Historical Site. The actual painting, hand-carried by Seymour throughout the thenunknown American West, is one of the oldest artifacts of Fort Smith that its citizens are ever likely to see.

View this unique piece of Fort Smith history and learn about the artist who created it. This is the first time it has returned to Fort Smith since 1820. The watercolor is loaned courtesy of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University.

The museum’s extensive exhibits illustrate the contributions of Fort Smith's citizens to the cultural, political and economic development of the area. The museum is housed in the 1906 Atkinson-Williams Warehouse, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Enjoy a treat in a working, old-fashioned soda fountain offers ice cream, sundaes, floats and ice cream sodas inside a 1920s-1940s pharmacy. A gift shop offers locally produced pottery, baskets and prints of historic Fort Smith, with an excellent selection of books on area history. Feb. 5-10 UAFS Homecoming Week The University of Arkansas-Fort Smith campus community and greater region are invited to celebrate the university’s annual homecoming festivities. by Darby and a photograph of Bill Darby as a young teenager. The panoramic photograph was taken on DeMolay Day in downtown Fort Smith on June 1, 1925. Young Darby is seated holding a clarinet in Cisterna Park on Garrison Avenue very near the spot where his statue stands today. His father is also in the photo. William Orlando Darby was born in Fort Smith on Feb. 8, 1911, to Percy and Nell Darby. A natural leader, from a young age Darby desired to be a soldier. Following graduation from Fort Smith High School in 1929, Darby received an appointment to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. After gradCol. Maj. Gen. Russell P. Hartle. Darby was selected to train an elite combat unit known as Darby's Rangers. The First U.S. Army Ranger Battalion was activated on July 9, 1942. Darby’s Rangers distinguished themselves in combat in North Africa and Europe. Darby was killed in action on April 30, 1945, at Torbole, Italy, and posthumously promoted to brigadier general on May 15, 1945. He was buried in a military cemetery outside of Cisterna, Italy and reinterred at the Fort Smith National Cemetery in 1949.

During his career Darby received three Purple Hearts, two Distinguished Service Crosses, the Silver Star, the Legion of Merit, the Russian Order of Kutuzov and the French Croix de Guerre. His medals, photographs, uniforms and artifacts are on permanent exhibit in the museum's William O. Darby Memorial Room and several audio/visual programs are available to visitors.

Preserving the History of Oklahoma Historically Black Towns In an effort to someday establish a museum, descendants of residents of Oklahoma historically black towns are being invited to share their family and community histories, artifacts and pictures.

While emancipated after 200 years of slavery, black citizens were still disenfranchised and barred from receiving education in much of the South. After the Civil War, many sought freedom in the territory that would become Oklahoma.

Rentiesville, Okla., the site of this meeting, is one such historically black town. It is anchored by the Oklahoma Blues Hall of Fame & Club where the annual Dusk to Dawn Blues Festival is held.

Selby Minner, a musician, club owner and festival organizer, is holding the Feb. 17 meeting to collect family histories on video and to copy and preserve any surviving photographs and documents that individuals will share. Her aim is to someday create a museum at Rentiesville.

She is the widow of D.C. Minner, whose family homestead is the blues club property.

Her late husband’s Minner ancestors were prominent, early residents of Rentiesville.

The town once had a black-led school, black-owned businesses, homes, fertile farmland and was self-governed by its African American residents. The area today has the postal address of Checotah, Okla.

A first meeting in December was attended by preservationists representing other historically black Oklahoma communities including Muskogee and Summit.

A light lunch, coffee and soft drinks will be served. Minner encourages people to show and explain photographs and information which can be added to the museum “in the works.”

Women Run Arkansas Training Clinic holds orientation for a March start FEB

A “Women Can Run” clinic beginning March 5 gets women walking, running or running faster. Participants in any shape (couch potatoes welcome!) are trained to complete an annual, state-wide graduation race, a 5K (3.1 mile) walk/run at the end on May 12 in Conway, Ark.

The 10-week clinic in Fort Smith forms groups for beginners, intermediate and advanced runners. Women can make new friends, grow healthier and stronger. Some form ongoing groups of running buddies to run with after the clinic . The orientation evening Feb. 22 will outline the program and offer registration.

The clinic is free. A $25 fee for the May graduation event covers entry, a dri fit shirt, medal and other goodies. All the trainers volunteer their time for the training period. Endorsed by participants as supportive and empowering, this clinic run by women for women is inclusive of young through senior women who may start from at all levels of fitness. Many participants credit it as a life-changing, beneficial experience.

The Women Run Arkansas Running/Walking Club is a Road Runners Club of America club dedicated to promoting healthy living among women through running and walking activities.

One training group from a previous WRA clinic, above. Women who may have never attempted running or walking for exercise are encouraged to train for effective, safe exercise.

Tour the U.S. Marshals Museum in virtual reality Seen through virtual reality goggles, the U.S. Marshals Museum is already standing on the banks of the Arkansas River in downtown Fort Smith. The public is invited to virtually “tour” the soon-to-constructed museum with the help of museum staff and the electronic device.

The virtual reality tours were made possible through a collaboration with CDI Contractors and Polk, Stanley, Wilcox Architects. Together, the two entities created high-resolution computer-generated panoramas of the museum building. The museum can be viewed from seven different locations, including the 20,000 square feet blank canvas that will ultimately become the museum’s exhibit hall.

This an ongoing preview of the museum, which is pledged to be completed in 2019. Feb. 22 Communities and Cultures in Fort Smith: Exploring Identities in the Region As part of the City of Fort Smith Bicentennial Celebration, the Fort Smith Museum of History will offer a new monthly speaker series addressing the communities and cultures that have influenced and shaped the region and the city as we know it today. The first program features speakers from the Fort Smith Police Department, Capt. Gerald Schaefer and Sgt. Wendal Sampson. The officers will discuss accomplishments within the department, race relations from an officer's perspective, and building relationships, both internal and external, in the community. was a distinctive address in the 1870s and remains a Fort Smith landmark today because citizens once fought for its preservation at a time when its neighborhood was in decline.

Julia Yadon, a Fort Smith citizen and volunteer, saved the Clayton House from demolition and led its restoration. After having the home listed on the National Register of Historic Places, she and others provided more documentation to officially recognize the Belle Grove Historic District. The neighborhood was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. The district rivals others nationwide for the number of Victorian architectural styles featured in its structures.

The year 2018 is the 45th anniversary of the Belle Grove Historic District. Its founding organization, the Fort Smith Heritage Foundation (a nonprofit Yadon organized in 1970), still operates the Clayton House as a Victorian home museum.

This Clayton Conversation will feature a slideshow of the district’s homes, citing features of their varied architectural styles and stories of the people who built and lived in them.

It is a strenuous 5.5 mile round trip to this 440-foot ledge where there are lots of interesting rock formations and great views of the river valley. Going in is easy but coming out requires a 1,000-foot elevation gain in 2.75 miles – not steep enough for switchbacks, just a continuous uphill trek. The view is worth the effort. Everyone is welcome, from those who actually danced at a USO to those who love the era’s styles of dance. Even those who only want to enjoy watching the dancers and hearing the music are welcomed.
