Hi! We’re back! Welcome to our traditional “Readers’ Favorites” issue, created mostly by your participation in our annual poll. Informing the winners and conducting their massive, three-day photo shoot is our biggest social whirl in our overly desk-bound lives.

It’s fun to talk with everyone, all of whom are honored to win. We get to meet new people, visit with old friends and learn all kinds of news.

It was especially fun this year to tour your honorees through the beautiful Bonneville House.

We’ve used different locations through the years – but always at the courtesy of Fort Smith attractions such as the Fort Smith Little Theater, the facility now known as The Blue Lion and the Darby Community Center.

This year, we were invited by our immediate neighbor, the Bonneville House, to make our photographs in the restored 1868 mansion. It was a pleasure to give our guests a tour.

Many recalled their own weddings or receptions held there. Others were familiar with the house but hadn’t been in to see the outstanding improvements and gentle renovations the Bonneville House Association has accomplished in its exemplary stewardship of the landmark.

Some were seeing its gracious rooms for the first time. We believe some bookings will follow, which is our hope.

We learned all kinds of fun news. The Unexpected Festival, one of the most-voted-for events overall, will return this year. The second Fort Smith Marathon is shaping up to be huge – and it’s happening Feb. 14. Some cool entertainment is coming our way at the Riverfront Blues Festival and its new bookend at the end of summer, the Peacemaker Festival. We’ll bring you the advance on those events as they approach.

In this issue: We’ve decided to start a new tradition of profiling young families this year. Contributing writer Brittany Ransom caught up with Kevin and Jenny Thompson, a family always on the run, to lead this series. Many people know the Thompsons, as Kevin is pastor to an active and growing church. Other young parents may appreciate the relatable struggles of Jenny and Kevin in scheduling a busy work and family life.

We liked their “non-negotiables,” their name for practices they try to uphold consistently.

It was just serendipity that brought another family story to our pages this month. Candise Montemayor, another contributer, wrote about a father with a unique plan to stay close to his daughter as a non-custodial parent. It includes imagination, technology, travel and adventure as he literally mapped out a way to share his love of the outdoors with his 3-year-old.

Our green-brained gardening columnist Reba Mize, that cockeyed optimist, promises that the Spring Fairy is almost here. She has shared her most fool-proof plants to encourage everyone to get in the dirt and dig – soon, she says!

Elsewhere, we bring you a round-up of concerts, a documentary film premiere and other interesting activities to attend.

We’d like to name some of our “Favorites” as well, starting the readers who have phoned throughout January to see when the next issue will arrive. It is nice to be missed during the one month a year we do not publish. Even though we have a December/January issue, some readers forget.

Our all-time “Favorites” deserve some love, too: the advertisers both past and present who make this magazine free for everyone.

With the Thompsons, ‘non-negotiables’ keep the family connected and on track

A stellar support system, a strict set of non-negotiables and a strong love for one another are key components of the Thompson household. Kevin and Jenny Thompson of Fort Smith, along with children Ella, 10, and Silas, 7, lead busy lives, but have managed to carve out a “surprisingly predictable” schedule that gives priority to their time as a family.

As lead pastor for Community Bible Church, Kevin has a full plate, overseeing staff at four campuses and a congregation comprised of 1,600 members across the area. During the week, Kevin’s day includes getting out the door and dropping the kids off at school before heading to church to spend a few hours preparing sermon notes and studying. Most afternoons are filled with lunch appointments, followed by scheduled meetings in the office. Off on Fridays, Kevin likes to fit in some time on the golf course to help unwind from the week.

Jenny’s day begins with getting the kids ready and out the door, before sitting down for a cup of coffee and devotional time. She then dives in to work from her at-home office, running the company she started more than two years ago, Forte Media Partners. After working for a local advertising agency for more than a decade, Jenny made the decision to start her own business in order to devote more time to her family. “I loved my job, but I didn’t like who I was ... I was taking out all of my tiredness and exhaustion

on Kevin and the kids. I felt as though they were just getting my ‘leftovers’ at the end of the day.”

The decision paid off, allowing Jenny to continue the work she enjoys while also providing her with great flexibility.

Being able to set her own schedule also allows Jenny to pick up Ella and Silas each day at 3 p.m. The three walk home from school, which is located just down the street from their home. Some days also involve being shuttled to extra-curricular activities, including Silas’ tennis lessons or team soccer practice. Ella, who has Down Syndrome, attends therapy twice weekly. She also greatly enjoys her Friday afternoons at gymnastics.

Afternoons at home often consist of Jenny finishing up work at her computer, while Silas plays at his Lego table and Ella works on her tablet.

In the evenings, Jenny spends time in the kitchen preparing dinner.

“Cooking is my creative outlet,” said Jenny, who loves to experiment with new dishes and fun flavors. Dinnertime is prime family time at the Thompson house, with both parents making it a top priority for their crew.

“Being home for dinner is one of my non-negotiables,” explained Kevin.

“Even if I have a member to visit at the hospital or a meeting to attend, I work hard to be home during dinner. That sometimes means coming in, eating and having to leave out again, but we make it work.”

Got the grit to run the Fort Smith

Marathon?

oted “Favorite Race of 2015” by the readers of this magazine, the second Fort Smith Marathon is set for Feb. 14. But those were readers and voting is easy.

Runners who attempted or even conquered the tough, 26.2-mile race and its demanding elevation changes might not use the word “favorite” to describe the experience. But plenty of them are returning, according to the race’s organizers. The race also includes halfmarathon and relay divisions.

The USATF-certified course designed last year remains essentially the same. Runners will pace themselves through historic downtown, beautiful neighborhoods, paved park trails and rolling terrain. Proceeds will support the construction of more such trails systems through Park Partners of Fort Smith Inc., a non-profit community organization.

Race registration is open until Feb. 13 at the website fortsmithmarathon.com.

Entry fees include a long-sleeved, cotton Tshirt, timing chip/bib and race packet, which has complete race information including lodging choices and details of all the activities and entertainment surrounding the race.

Get involved in the Fort Smith Marathon without running a step: It will take the whole community to make this marathon as successful as the first – and cement a tradition for years to come.

Volunteer!

Folks are needed from days before the race until after the runners toast their finish. Course set-up and crews start the day before, dropping off equipment. Others will set up the barricades, cones, signs and aide station supplies starting at 6 a.m. on race day and tear down the course after the runners pass.

The registration process takes staff. Help assemble or distribute race packets on Friday, Saturday and Sunday of race weekend.

Traffic control volunteers keep runners safe from street traffic from about 7:30 a.m.-3 p.m. at many locations across the course.

150 volunteers are needed for this crew.

Food & refreshment helpers are needed to assist OK Foods with prep and service.

Staff will offer water and food on the course and pass out warming blankets and finishers’ medals at the finish line.

General clean-up. The Fort Smith Marathon will load up and store its equipment for next year. Many hands are welcome. Connect and volunteer on the race Facebook page.

Girl Scouts will honor five Women of Distinction at ceremony

G

irl Scouts of the Fort Smith service area of the Diamond Council of Arkansas, Oklahoma and Texas will honor five women chosen as exemplary role models for girls at a March 3 award ceremony.

The honorees include one Young Woman of Distinction along with four women “whose efforts are aligned with the mission of Girl Scouting – to build girls of courage, confidence and character and to make the world a better place,” according to the press release announcing the honorees. As a tradition, each of them learned of their awards when they were surprised in public by a visit from the awards organizers.

A Young Woman of the Year is named less frequently than the adult honorees with established careers.

Kaersti McLellan, a pre-med student at Hendrix College and a Southside High School graduate, is only the fourth Young Woman recipient of this council’s awards.

McLellan attained the highest achievement in Girl Scouting, the Gold Award, while participating in Girl Scouts here.

Gold Award projects are meant to solve a community problem. Hers was starting a club for junior high girls who were interested in the STEM fields.

McLellan’s nomination materials noted she has volunteered to help special needs children and at summer camp for adults with special needs. She was president of the Southside Habitat for Humanity club, a member of the dance team and led a “no cell phone in a school zone” project.

Dr. Carolyn Mosley is a professor and dean of the College of Health Sciences at the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith. Since arriving in Arkansas after 25 years at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center as professor and associate dean of Academic Administration, Dr. Mosley has served on an astounding number of boards and on the State of Arkansas Minority Health Commission. She is president of the board for the Good Samaritan Health Clinic, chair of the Sparks Investigational Review Board, and the president of the board at St. James Missionary Baptist Church and an officer in the Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.

Cathy Gifford, a lifelong resident of Crawford County, is serving her second term as a justice of the peace and served for 12 years on the Van Buren School Board. She founded Leadership Crawford County and has led it for 11 years. Gifford has worked at the Farm Bureau since 1988 and has led and been a part of many organizations. She is married to Richard Gifford. They have two children and two grandchildren. She is a dedicated member of the Kibler United Methodist Church.

Sherry Sims is a graduate of Northside High School and, as everyone agrees, is a cheerleader for her school, community and friends. She has worked at Rheem Manufacturing for 18 years and has been the backbone of all of Rheem's community involvement, particularly its service as a Partner in Education to several elementary schools. Sims is a well-respected, active volunteer in many events and organizations. She has served on the board and as board president of Girls Inc. for more than eight years. She is currently president of the Rotary Club of Fort Smith.

Karen Lewis grew up in Fort Smith and has made her life here. She began her career as a CPA, as comptroller of Sparks Regional Medical Center and Hankins and Co. She has served on numerous boards, including the Sebastian County Humane Society, Abilities Unlimited, Mount Magazine Girl Scout Council and Interfaith Community Preschool.

Sweets RED HOT SUGAR COOKIES Cookies: 3 cups all-purpose flour 1 tsp. baking soda 1 cup salted butter, softened 11⁄4 cups granulated sugar 3/4 cup packed light-brown sugar 2 tsp. vanilla extract 2 large eggs 1 cup Red Hot Candies, broken into pieces (I place in a large Ziplock bag and hit a few times with a mallet) Red sanding sugar, roughly 2 bottles Glaze: 2 cups powdered sugar 2 tbsp. warm water 3-4 drops cinnamon candy flavoring oil 1 drop red food coloring Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line baking sheets with parchment paper. In a mediumlarge bowl, stir flour and baking soda together. Set aside.

Beat butter and sugars with your mixer on medium speed until pale and fluffy, about 1 minute. Beat in eggs, one at a time, and then vanilla extract. Reduce speed; gradually add flour mixture, and mix until just combined. Mix in Red Hot candy.

Using a medium cookie scoop, scoop dough and place on prepared baking sheet, about 2 inches apart. Flatten cookies slightly, then sprinkle with red sanding sugar.

Brush with a damp baking brush and sprinkle with red sanding sugar again. Bake for about 8-10 minutes, until edges just begin to turn golden. Let cool on sheet for 5 minutes before removing to wire rack.

Prepare glaze: In a medium bowl, whisk powdered sugar, warm water, cinnamon candy oil and red food coloring until smooth. Drizzle glaze on cooled cookies.

RED VELVET MILKY WAY BROWNIES Brownies: 1 box red velvet cake mix 1 stick salted butter, melted 1/2 cup evaporated milk 15-20 fun size Milky Way Bars Frosting: 4 tbsp. salted butter 2 tbsp. unsweetened cocoa powder 3 tbsp. whole milk 1/4 tsp. vanilla extract 12⁄3 cups powdered sugar 4 oz. white chocolate, melted Brownies: Heat oven to 350 degrees.

Line an 8x8 pan with foil. Spray with nonstick baking spray and set aside.

Stir together cake mix, melted butter and evaporated milk in a large bowl with a wooden spoon, until smooth. Spread half the batter into prepared pan. Bake for 8 minutes.

Place Milky Way bars over the entire surface of the brownies, then spoon remaining batter over the top. Spread so the batter covers them completely. (You might have to use your hands.) Bake for 20 minutes. Remove from oven.

Frosting: In a small saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Whisk in cocoa powder and milk, whisking until mixture comes to a boil. Remove from heat and whisk in powdered sugar and vanilla until smooth.

Pour over brownies, spreading evenly.

Melt white chocolate and drizzle over brownies. Cool to room temperature, then cover and chill until firm before removing foil and cutting into squares.

In the bowl of your stand mixer, combine cake mix, pudding mix, milk, vegetable oil, and eggs. Beat on low speed for 30 seconds. Increase speed to medium and beat for 2 more minutes.

Fill muffin tins half way with batter.

Top each with a spoonful of cheesecake filling – each tin should be about 2/3 full when complete.

Bake 15-20 minutes or until cupcakes spring back when lightly touched in the center. Let cool for a few minutes in the pan before removing to wire racks to cool completely.

Frosting: In the bowl of your mixer, beat butter and cream cheese on medium speed until smooth. Add the strawberry puree and beat on medium low until mixed.

Add powdered sugar and beat on low until just barely mixed in. Increase mixer speed to high and beat for one minute. If frosting is too thin, add another 1/2 cup of powdered sugar to get desired consistency. Frost cooled cupcakes and serve.

The Spring Fairy is coming

Garden writer Reba Mize notes we’ve crossed into a new gardening year. Get ready!

L

et’s talk about spring, even in February. Let’s look at seed catalogs, let’s go to garden shows and visit nurseries with our best gardening buddies.

You’ve got to have faith in cold weather.

My neighbors are used to seeing me in my flower beds, pulling back the mulch and shouting, “Eureka!” when I spot little green living things coming up.

After this winter, there have been a few days when even I was not sure – but yes – spring is just around the corner. The signs are all around us. The little harbingers of spring, the buds of the lilac, the tulips and the daffodils heads are saying yes, we will get you through this if you can hold on a few weeks.

The last few years have really been rough with the extreme weather – record-breaking heat and cold have separated the gardeners from the people who like plants. However, if you are still in the game or maybe you are new to gardening, let’s talk.

I believe if you don’t kill at least one plant a year you, are not being adventurous. Every year, I push the boundaries of zones and sun and shade if I feel the plant is worth the chance. This year, I want to try poppies, more edible plants and I want to plant lavender again – a plant I have killed several times before.

I love the idea of planting seeds. Just imagine all the information that is stored in 38

that little container of nature. Unleashed by moisture, everything this plant needs to know – whether it be an acorn to grow a mighty oak or a pretty zinnia – is contained in this truly miraculous, tiny package.

Even in chilly February, you can start some plants from seed that you will eventually transplant into the outdoors.

It’s all about the last frost. Fortunately, there are scientists who prognosticate that date for us by studying the average historical frost-free dates. There is always the chance of an exception, but Fort Smith’s frost-free date usually falls in the middle of March.

After the frost-free date (give or take a few days) some plants can be transplanted into the outdoors and some seeds can be sown directly into the soil.

Counting back from mid-March, here are some plants that can be started indoors about 6-8 weeks before the presumed last frost: Vegetables and herbs: Eight weeks prior, bell peppers, catnip, chile peppers, chives, oregano, paprika peppers, parsley, sage, savory, sweet peppers, St. John's Wort, thyme, tomatillos and tomatoes. Six weeks prior, you can start asparagus, basil, echinacea root, fennel (herb and vegetable), melons, okra, onions, rhubarb and shallots.

So take your pick and start some seeds indoors, following seed packet directions.

I prefer sowing seeds into the ground, so

I’ll be preparing a few areas where I can wait until after the frost-free date and put these little miracles right into the soil. Here are some plants I have grown or will try to grow from direct-sown seeds: Sunflowers (there are so many varieties available now) are on my mind and any sunflower is such a payoff!

Zinnias are my all-time favorite, because of their variety of color and size. I’m going to try larkspur and hollyhocks from seed, too.

Committing to seeds means you must commit to 7-10 days of watering, no matter what the temperature is. You simply must.

I’ve also been a beneficiary of pass-along plants. Nothing I can do about that in February but be really nice to the people I hope will trade or give me some plants in March.

There are many other ways to make more plants and, eventually, if you garden long enough, you will hopefully investigate the wonderful world of propagation. Your journey will open up an entire new world with its own language with words like scarification, internodal cuttings and autogamous. Don’t be put off by these terms – all you really need is imagination and patience. Just imagine the satisfaction of making new plants from existing plants.

That said, as a gardener by trade, I want my home garden to be as worry-free, but as prolific, in all seasons as possible so I will tell

Some tried-and-true easy plants to grow from seed are (clockwise) zinnias, monarda and rudbeckia (Black-eyed Susan). Whether from seed or a nursery purchase, purple coneflowers are hardy, too. Modest melampodium spreads easily and has bright yellow, tiny flowers. All attract pollinators such as bees, butterflies and hummingbirds, too.

you my secret winners. With these plants and some well-spaced annuals, you should have a beautiful, relatively carefree garden.

A warning about my favorite flowers: When a lady at one of my garden talks asked me if a plant was “invasive,” I answered, “It better be in my garden! It’s dog-eat-dog in there and I want them to spread. Free plants!”

When asked by new gardeners what to plant, I always suggest they take a year to keep a garden journal recording the amount of sun that falls on their garden at what time of day in order to decide if they have a sun or shade garden or a combination – which is what I have in my yard.

Guess how often the excited new gardeners take my advice?

So, here are some tough plants that have survived in our interesting little microclimate.

Add in some annuals – from our local nurseries – such as periwinkle for sun, impatiens for shade and don’t forget the fun and eye-appeal of yard art. It never fails!

If you love birds and butterflies, go easy on the pesticides and chemicals. Remember, that caterpillar munching on your plant will someday turn into a butterfly.

OUTDOORS “She is my world and I wanted to find unique ways to interact with her after separating as parents on good terms with her mother,” he recalled. “The outdoors is a big part of my life but I felt limited in my options ... until I discovered Instagram.”

Together, Ronin’s parents got their daughter her own phone and downloaded the Instagram app. She knows how to log in and access the map. Instagram allows her dad to take pictures and tag them with the location and date. These pictures show up on a map within the application that allows Ronin to see where he is and what he is seeing.

Button uses Instagram to log all of his state park visits. First, he finished all 96 state parks in Texas within nine months and then he started working on Arkansas. No. 52 was completed on Christmas, with Ronin, which was one year from the day he started.

When Ronin is old enough to go on more of the hikes with him, the pictures will become their own personal game of geocache as they retrace his path to find the locations of where he took the photos and add new photos of their own.

nstagram brings instant smiles to Ryan and Ronin Button, a daddydaughter duo who are using social media to stay connected, as well as to record new adventures they are taking together.

New Year’s Day marked Ronin’s first overnight campout. The two have been hiking since she could walk and little Ronin has been following her daddy on Instagram via a cell phone since her little fingers could press the keys. At 3 years old, Ronin has a keen enjoyment of the chocolate s’mores and cozy hammock that come with a woodland adventure spent with dad.

This past Christmas, after five trips and 9,000 miles of road, Button completed a full year of hiking all the state parks in Arkansas. He and his daughter placed their bright red Christmas presents under a tree on the park grounds and spent the day exploring. “What I treasure most is sitting back and watching her enjoy the woods,” he said.

Button, who is a professor of sociology full time at Tyler Junior College in Texas and also studied social change and social economics at Kansas State University, said the goal of hiking all the state parks in Arkansas began in Texas when Ronin was not yet walking.

“The rules I have made are this: In order to tag a photo and prove I have been in that park, I must hike the longest trail in the park.

Someday, she and I will take another photo exactly where I was standing,” Button said.

“It’s kind of a scavenger hunt for Ronin so she can look on the map and find that part of the park and she knows where I am every weekend that we are not together.”

Button, who has hiked several major trails in the United States, including the Appalachian Trail and Mount Wonderland Trail, finds a way to get outdoors yearround, no matter the weather.

“One of the great things about hiking is that it puts you in the mindset of dealing with things as they come,” he explained. “You have to have the equipment to do it, but a lot of people will spend a lot of money to stay dry in the rain. I have found no matter how much money you spend, you are going to get wet.”

The 5th Dimension plays Alma FEBRUARY

The first major hit for The 5th Dimension, “Up, Up and Away,” rocketed the group to worldwide success in 1967. Rivaling its popularity, the medley “Aquarius/Let the Sun Shine In,” from the music Hair also topped the charts and the vocal group became an iconic sound of the ’60s.

Some of the songwriters popularized by The 5th Dimension went on to careers of their own, especially Ashford & Simpson, who wrote “California Soul.” The group is also notable for having more success with the songs of Laura Nyro than Nyro did herself, particularly with “Stoned Soul Picnic,” “Sweet Blindness,” “Wedding Bell Blues,” “Blowin' Away” and “Save the Country.” The group also covered music by well-known songwriters, such as the song “One Less Bell to Answer” written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David and the songs and music of Jimmy Webb, who penned their hit “Up, Up and Away.”

The group, whose smooth harmonies were interposed with stand-out solos, has a sound dubbed “Champagne Soul” and in its original form, received 14 gold records, six platinum records and six Grammy awards.

After many years of success, two of the five members, the married couple Marilyn Davis and Billy McCoo, left for a successful career as a duo.

The current group, led by original member Florence LaRue, remains true to the group's original sound while continuing to develop fresh new material. LaRue’s powerful vocal lead in songs like “One Less Bell To Answer,” is immediately recognizable as a classic sound of Florence LaRue The 5th Dimension then and now. Alphonso Trent and his Orchestra of Gold Notable Achievements The first black ensemble to work all-white hotels in Texas. Beginning in 1925, the band played the ballroom of the Adolphus Hotel in Dallas for 18 straight months, setting a record never to be equaled.

The first black group to broadcast from a major hotel outside New York City (on 50,000 watt KFAA radio in 1925 from the Adolphus Hotel in Dallas).

Played at the inaugural ball of Miriam A. Ferguson, the first woman governor of Texas.

One of the first bands to use the string bass.

Trent’s vocalist John Fielding was most likely the first “band singer” in a jazz orchestra (1924), preceding even Bing Crosby.

B

efore the Civil Rights movement achieved its goals of desegregation, black residents of Fort Smith were a tightly knit community united by attending Lincoln High School, trading at black-owned businesses and creating a vibrant musical scene.

Alphonso Trent, born in Fort Smith in 1902 to Professor E.O. and Hattie Trent, prominent citizens of the city, was a source of pride to his community when he became an orchestra leader in the 1920s and broke out of the “colored” circuit to perform on radio and in prestigious “white” performance halls in the South and, later, across the nation.

Trent returned and resided in Fort Smith as a businessman after World War II, after two decades of achievement as a bandleader.

Although he is now recognized in his hometown by the Fort Smith Museum of History and as the subject of extensive research, a cadre of historicians and musicians, led by John McIntosh, felt something was missing – the glorious music Trent produced.

They have collaborated to produce a short documentary that will premiere at the Fort Smith Museum of History at 1 p.m. Feb. 27. It is a part of the museum’s ongoing exhibit and programming, Roots, Rhythm & Rock Music That Moved Fort Smith: First Movement 1880-1945 and Black History Month. Admission is $5.

The documentary features an orchestra of musicians performing jazz of Trent’s time and some of his own arrangements and compositions, led by musical director Chris Cameron. The vocals are by Ryk St. Vincent with Tyler Weaver, trombone; Michael Hanna, saxophone; Mark Steele, drums/percussion, and Rick Endel, piano; Tommy Hough, tuba; Brandon Patterson, bass; Spencer Barker, trumpet; Chris Cameron, banjo; and Dave Holland, guitar.

Singer Ryk St. Vincent plays the real-life figure John Fielding, an orchestra singer from whose point of view we get a first-hand description of the long and adventurous road from Trent’s street band days in Fort Smith to their success in venues challenging the perceptions of a “colored territory band” and how the band’s reputation worked to improve race relations in America.

The script is an adaptation of a one-act play researched and written by Dr. Henry Rinne, the former dean of the College of Arts and Humanities and Social Services at the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith. Rinne is also a jazz musician.

An orchestra of local musicians led by Chris Cameron portrays the Trent orchestra and performs Trent’s arrangements and compositions to share, again, his genius and talent to an audience who may know his name but not his music. The Alphonso Trent Orchestra was one of the earliest black orchestras to be broadcast on radio.

Trent formed his first orchestra in 1923 and it played its first professional engagement in Eureka Springs. When that job ended, he went to Little Rock to attend Shorter College. His father, A.O. Trent, was principal of Lincoln High School in Fort Smith.

In Little Rock, he began working with Eugene Crooke to form Synco Six: Edwin Swayzee, trumpet; Eugene Crooke, banjo; Trent, piano; Harry Jones, drums; James Jeter, alto saxophone; and John Fielding, vocals. While watching a parade, Trent and Crooke spotted a very young Trent was an trombonist who played a solo “swing” style. Soon, 15-year-old Leo “Snub” inspiration to Mosley became a member of the young black ensemble. The band soon departed Little musicians.

Rock for an extended engagement at a drugstore in Helena, Ark. It is possible, according to Rinne’s research, that vocalist Fielding may have been the first “band singer” in a jazz orchestra.

In the summer of 1924, the orchestra had a gig at Stem Beach Resort in Muskogee, Okla.

The band, now called the Alphonso Trent Orchestra, traveled toward Texas in 1925. On their way, they performed on street corners to earn enough money for food and gas. As black men, they would have been barred from staying in most commercial lodging.

The orchestra was offered a two-week contract to perform in the Adolphus Hotel ballroom, a venue for white-only audiences and guests.

Their talent earned them a breakthrough: The orchestra was so popular that the engagement was extended for 18 months, setting a record never to be equaled. From the Adolphus Ballroom, their music was broadcast on KFAA, a 50,000-watt station heard nationally.

Tours of Texas and surrounding states followed. For the next two decades, Trent led an orchestra with varying members that would play prestigious venues in major cities across the nation, a pioneer in breaking the color bar in many venues. The orchestra also made recordings.

The documentary “Alphonso’s Gold” brings these changes in culture and in jazz music to life in a vivid and enjoyable film.

Other members of the production team of “Alphonso’s Gold” include Mike Hart of 5 Star Productions, director, and Chris Cameron, Don Bailey and Chuck Booker Jr. responsible for the music and soundtrack.

A host of community collaborators and supporters will be recognized at the premiere, including local historians and writers and Arkansas State Rep. George McGill, who helped the producers seek funding.

Feb. 1-Oct. 15 Roots, Rhythm and Rock – Music That Moved Fort Smith: Part I, 1880-1945 Exhibit features William Worth Bailey Jr. and Katherine Price Bailey who operated the Southwest School of Musical Arts in Fort Smith and started the Fort Smith Symphony in 1923, the first in Arkansas. William Worth Bailey, Jr. was a Fort Smith native and a renowned blind violinist known as the “American Paganini.” Also featured in the exhibition are the 1887 Grand Opera House, the 1911 New Theater and the Hartford Music Co. and Institute. Musicians featured in the exhibit include: W.D.C. Botefuhr, first music director at the University of Arkansas in 1872 and director of the Fort Smith Conservatory of Music in 1881; jazz great Alphonso Trent and his orchestra; gospel composer Albert Brumley with the Hartford Music Institute; the inventor of the bazooka, Van Buren native Bob Burns; and KWHN Radio Station at the Goldman Hotel. Artifacts include: a “shape-note” song book with “I’ll Fly Away” by Albert Brumley; vintage instruments; and a large card mounted photograph (believed to be albumen) of Botefuhr. Gen. William O. Darby Birthday Celebration Celebrate the birthday of Gen. William O. Darby, the Fort Smith native revered as founder of the modern Army Rangers.

The day of observance at the Fort Smith Museum of History offers a video interview with one of Darby’s Rangers and updated exhibits in the William O. Darby Memorial Room. Retired Army Ranger Terry Toler of Jefferson City, Mo., will introduce a rare video interview with Maj. Warren “Bing” Evans. Evans served as battalion sergeant major to then-Col. Darby and offers a fascinating description of Ranger training and the devastating Battle of Cisterna.

Evans died last year at 96. The museum has updated the Darby exhibition to include his early life in Fort Smith, his education at West Point, his career as a soldier and the lasting legacy of the well-known founder of the modern Army Rangers. Darby was born in Fort Smith on Feb. 8, 1911, to Percy and Nell Darby. He graduated from Fort Smith High School in 1929 and received an appointment to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York. Following Pearl Harbor, Darby was selected to train an elite combat unit: The first Army Ranger Battalion was activated on July 9, 1942. Darby was killed in action on April 30, 1945, at Torbole, Italy, and posthumously promoted to brigadier general. He was buried in a military cemetery outside of Cisterna, Italy, and reinterred at the Fort Smith National Cemetery in 1949. Darby received three Purple Hearts, two Distinguished Service Crosses, the Silver Star, the Legion of Merit, the Russian Order of Kutuzov and the French Croix de Guerre. Named in his honor are Darby Junior High School in Fort Smith, the Army troopship USNS General William O. Darby, the USAT General William O. Darby, Camp Darby in Italy and many Army training fields. He was portrayed in the 1958 Warner Brothers film “Darby’s Rangers.” Gen. George S. Feb. 11 Program and Book Signing with Greg Shepard Author Greg Shepard will discuss his book “Earthstains.” The book is based on the true story of two handsome and charismatic young men from Chester, Ark., who came of age in the Roaring ‘20s, capturing the imagination of a nation with a string of sensational bank robberies. Theirs was an era of seismic social and technological change, arguably the most significant period of cultural transformation in our nation’s history. Their generation gave birth to a small but conspicuous segment of the population: pleasure-seeking, self-indulgent profligates known as sheiks and flappers, lifestyles to which these two young men and their female companions devoted themselves. While the two brothers and their father are seemingly bent on self-destruction, two fiercely loyal and independent women, a sister and the wife of one of the brothers, flappers in their own right, do their best to hold together a family that falls victim to a series of indiscriminate calamities. These two young men, Matt and George Kimes, competed with Herbert Hoover and Charles Lindberg for newspaper headlines in 1927.

The brother’s short but explosive careers lasted no more than two months for the older brother, George, and just a little more than a year for the younger brother, Matt. Still, they grabbed headlines over the next 20 years. In 1945, the Oklahoma Associated Press voted the events surrounding the death of Matt Kimes their Story of the Year. Greg Shepard lives with his wife of 45 years in Allen, Texas. He discovered the story of Matt and George Kimes in a conversation about family history with his grandfather in 1985. In 2011, after the passing of his mother, Greg renewed his efforts to write his family history, rediscovering the brothers and their incredible story. He thought he could bring the characters to life in a novel better than a simple retelling of history. Copies of the book will be available for purchase. Feb. 27 Hawksbill Crag Trail TrailBlazers Hiking Club will hike Hawksbill Crag Trail and Lost Valley Trail. Hawksbill Crag is an amazing rock outcrop that juts out from the top of a tall bluff overlooking the Buffalo River. Lost Valley is a beautiful area nearby that has a trail following a creek to a cave where there is a 30-foot waterfall. Take a flashlight if you want to go inside to see it. A gifted pianist and natural leader, Trent organized the Alphonso Trent Orchestra, encouraging strong technique and performance ability, influencing many young African American musicians. The Alphonso Trent Orchestra was a sophisticated dance band playing for fashionable audiences during the “Jazz Age,” a time of prosperity in the United States. Moving to Fort Smith at age 8, the petite community activist and United Methodist Church conference leader, now 92, inherited strength from parents and grandparents, and developed it from long walks to school in shoes with cardboard soles. Her father served as pastor of the Mallalieu Episcopal Methodist Church in Fort Smith beginning in 1900; her mother was widowed when Euba was 9. After mothering 10 children and helping hundreds more through her 25 years as leader of the Mallalieu Community Center, Harris-Winton, who still lives on the plot of land on which she grew up, fondly recalls the priceless features of her childhood, as well as the A young Euba. plain hard ones. March 5 Eagle Tour & Loon Watch Tour features southern bald eagles on the nest. Start by watching eagles from the refuge’s webcam and then continue on the 25-person tour bus. Take your binoculars.
