Old (renewed) and new (old) ideas These two images now face each other over North 3rd Street. One is real and one came from the fertile imagination of D*Face, an artist visiting the edge of the American West for the first time.

What can they mean, together, and to each other? I think taken as a pair they symbolize the continuing determination of our city, which is made of people, to live and progress.

Art and photographs can be meaningful.

Last month, the chance to regard street art

lured thousands out to survey it, talk to one another and to see with new eyes. Many said they felt energized. Lots of younger people admitted that they now felt their hometown might be cool. Art and industry; art and commerce, art and progress go side by side.

In this issue, we have written about both the old and the young and both were kind of wonderful. We hope you enjoy reading about them.

C.C. Lockwood’s new book continues mission of saving Wild Louisiana What a nice Thanksgiving or Christmas treat it would be if Southside High School Class of 1967 graduate C.C. Lockwood could visit from Louisiana and show and tell us all about his latest book at the Fort Smith Public Library. He did that a few years ago with his lively, popular (so popular it's now out of print ) book about alligators, so maybe it can happen.

In his new book, Louisiana Wild, The Lands Restored and Protected by the Nature Conservancy, C.C continues his 44-year quest to help save and preserve the natural habitat of his adopted home state of Louisiana. To that end, C.C. has worked for years with the Nature Conservancy – a worldwide organization active in 51 countries to protect more than 1 million acres. He was commissioned by the organization to write and provide photography for his new book updating conservancy efforts in Louisiana.

The new book's launch party was held in Baton Rouge last month at the Manship Theater Shaw Center for the Arts. C.C. is heavily engaged for book-signing events and appearances, as well as his own photo workshops.

You can keep up with him on his website, cclockwood.com Photographs and a movie C.C. made of Louisiana's Atchafalaya River Basin Swamp between 1975 and 1977 helped convince the state's legislators, residents and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers that the Atchafalaya Basin was too ecologically important to the rapidly vanishing Gulf Coast wetlands to be destroyed by the corps' plans to drain and channel the swamp.

Since his first book, Atchafalaya, America's Largest River Basin Swamp, was published in 1981, C.C.'s books, photos and films have won him international acclaim and honors, including the Sierra Club's Ansel Adams Award for outstanding conservation photography. Other awards include having one of his Atchafalaya photos – Flat Lake Sunset – chosen by the U.S. Postal service as the image for a 2002 issue of a first-class Forever Stamp commemorating the 200th anniversary of Louisiana statehood.

He has also been named a “Louisiana Legend” by the state's public broadcasting network.

His website lists all 14 of his books to date. Four are out of print, among them the very popular title, The Alligator Book, he introduced to a delighted, SRO crowd at the main Fort Smith Public Library in 2003, along with a very live, 5-foot alligator.

C.C. had only about a year to create his newest book and took the first photo for it in July 2013, he told me during a brief phone call last month.

That first photo was of a purple cone flower, which he describes as “a unique flower of Louisiana's swamps and marshes.”

book, he says he revisited that same purple cone flower, and all the rest of the individual photo subjects appearing in the book, more than 60 times.

Taking multiple shots of the same subjects in different seasons, weather conditions and times of the day – during the time he has to film them – is one of C.C.'s trademarks for his award-winning photography.

C.C.'s new book is dedicated to his wife, Sue, his “sidekick;” Sue's father, Boney Richardson; and his dad, Dr. Frank Lockwood of Fort Smith.

Dr. Lockwood is, of course, very proud of C.C. and his many awards and accomplishments.

“He's such a perfectionist,” Dr. Lockwood told me when I phoned him for a comment about his son's new book. When I couldn't help but ask if he thought C.C. may have inherited that trait from his dad, Dr. Lockwood paused and then admitted, “I think so – I hope so.”

While C.C. admits he "specializes in swamps and marshes," he encourages all people to help create a clean earth and conserve natural resources. One of his missions in Louisiana is trying to help save what's left of the state's cypress and long leaf pine forests.

C.C.'s photography is a major component in his ongoing conservation efforts, which include photography workshops he begins with indoor classes for his students before moving them into the nearby environments he loves and works to preserve. His environmental knowledge informs his beautiful, insightful photographs that continue to prove they have the power to cause humans to reconsider and halt the destruction of our environment and all the creatures, waters and plants within it.

ort Smith founder John Rogers and the father-and-son team of Richard and Rick Griffin have a common bond: Almost two centuries apart, these early and current urban developers transformed the west end of Garrison Avenue.

What Rogers envisioned when he arrived in 1822 was a plan for a thriving town to rise next to the first military Fort Smith, established in 1817 by the Army.

What the Griffins have accomplished in the present is the restoration of numerous historic downtown buildings, in a manner very like John Roger’s drive to recruit and cheer-lead for longlasting residents, prosperous commerce and constant growth.

With the completion of 400-411 Garrison Avenue’s Breezeway Apartments and Garrison Pointe West, the ground floor’s commercial space, the Griffins have now revitalized the entire 400 block. Prior to this project, Griffin Properties’ development division built the Garrison Pointe convenience store. Adjacent to the store building, which was carefully designed to blend with downtown’s architectural styles, is the St. Charles Building, offices the Griffins updated.

At 318 Garrison is the historic 1885 Adelaide Hall building, a renovation completed more than 20 years ago by the Griffins and in continuous use since as a successful restaurant, now as Bricktown Brewery. On the same side of the street as the Breezeway at the Griffin-renovated 307 Garrison building is the retail business Creative Kitchen and above it, four luxury apartments. The single-story, early 20th century store building at 305 Garrison is presently home to a boutique and around the corner at 14 North 3rd Street are spacious upstairs apartments. Downstairs are the offices of the U.S. Marshals Museum. There are other Griffin buildings on Rogers Avenue.

Rick Griffin, who has an easygoing grin for a businessman who has invested so much in surely-not-a-quick-buck renovations, will say “financially, it may not have been the greatest idea” to take on so much of the family’s hometown landmarks, “but it is a passion project.”

The main focus of Griffin Construction is the building of upscale nursing homes, mostly in Texas. The design, engineering and construction work the company has done on old Fort Smith buildings is utterly different. The firm’s deep bench of construction professionals has conquered challenges mounted by the effects of time, weather and gravity to these 19th- and early 20th-century structures – and had to invent solutions. The buildings of 400-411 had to be steel-reinforced extensively for structural integrity, but now may last another century.

With a deep interest in Fort Smith history, the Griffins have been consistent in restoring, as faithfully as possible, the original appearance of the properties they’ve tackled. As long ago as 1996, Richard Griffin preserved only the facade of the Reynolds-Davis Wholesale Grocery building at 300 Garrison, after the rest of the building was destroyed in the horrendously destructive April 21 tornado.

The Breezeway is named for a ground floor dogtrot area. “We shelled out the center for a cool space and a wow factor,” Rick explained.

With custom iron gates at the Garrison entrance, the Breezeway has an outdoor kitchen, with a gas grill and stacked-stone fireplace at the rear. Residents use it and it may be rented for private events.

They commissioned historical researcher Joe Wasson to select a series of original Rick Griffin photos of Garrison Avenue scenes to be hung in the space. Similar historic images can be seen at Garrison Pointe’s avenue exposure.

On the west-facing exterior wall above the oldest building of the block, a one-story, 1879 stone building at 400 Garrison, the Griffins, Wasson and Derek Maxey collaborated to install a spectacular 9x60foot enlargement of the panoramic photograph of the 1908 reunion of U.S. Marshals deputies, an iconic Fort Smith image. It is visible from cars crossing over the Arkansas River from Oklahoma.

The Griffins chose the image for its historic relevance and to support the future U.S. Marshals Museum. Wasson was tasked with obtaining permission to use the image from the descendants of James Elbert Emmert, one of the deputies pictured. The Emmert family had donated the original photograph to several historical archives. Derek Maxey of Maxey Signs & Neon researched the innovative method used to produce the sharp, high-resolution image, essentially a huge, inkjet-printed vinyl decal applied to aluminum panels, printed by PAC Printers of Van Buren.

Wasson also had the fun assignment to call two descendants, cousins John and Paul Emmert of Talihina, Okla., to come to Fort Smith to survey the installed image. He describes both as serious fellows.

“One of the cousins never gives anything away with his expression,” Wasson said. “But if you watch John closely, the corner of his mouth turned up just a little bit. That’s when we knew they were very pleased.”

Besides the work on their massive downtown buildings, Richard and Rick Griffin have served on the Central Business Improvement District, have contributed generously to the Marshal’s Museum and numerous other efforts. A few years ago they teamed with Wasson and group of donors to create and place 12 bronze historical markers downtown that picture and deliver historical information – on the plaques and also, through a scannable QR digital code, online, in linked multimedia videos.

But most of all, this is a success story.

In the fall of 2003, Dennis Woody, a professional baseball scout, found himself moving to the mountains of western Arkansas to the childhood home of his sixth-generation Arkansan wife, Betty. He knew relatively nothing about the area but one look at the lay of the land and he immediately knew what he wanted to do with it.

Dennis’ travels through the wine country of Italy, France, Canada and California had instilled a secret passion and he always knew someday, somehow, he would have a vineyard. But he never considered the possibility it would be on a mountainside in Arkansas.

He ran the idea by his wife, father-in-law and a few close friends, but no one took him very seriously. What were the odds anything besides pine trees would grow in the rocky soil, overgrown with a dense forest? And why would anyone want to spend the time and money it would take to try?

Even so, he quietly began the process of clearing the area, preparing the soil, stringing wire and setting posts for the trellis, and building a hand-stacked rock wall to surround the area. All the rocks were ones he removed. Having a job that required travel about 20 days a month made this a very slow process.

In 2008, armed with countless books and articles but no previous gardening experience, Dennis planted his little 4-to-6-inch, dormant Chardonnay, Cabernet and Cynthiana vines. The first two years, he waited for the vines to establish a solid root system. The third year, there were a few grapes.

The next years were plagued with failure. Excessive rain caused mold. One year, Arkansas experienced a drought. Despite Betty’s efforts in stringing 300 feet of hose together to hand water the vineyard each day, Mother Nature and her parched, cracked earth had other plans. Another year, summer temperatures in the area were consistently above 100 degrees and the plump grapes turned into raisins before the grapes were ready to be picked.

It was during these trying times of crop loss that Betty began to suggest that perhaps everyone had been right after all. Maybe there was a reason no one had ever successfully grown anything but muscadines and a few table grapes in this area. Frustrated with consecutive failures and battling the elements (not to mention that long, heavy garden hose), she suggested that although it had been a valiant effort, it might be time to give up.

At the time Dennis caught this photo of Martha and Oliver the dog, she was recovering from the heartbreaking experience of her husband’s recent and sudden death. Betty rescued this abused dog in 2014. Nineteen months later, Oliver is a healthy, happy, smart and loyal companion. “This is a dog who was broken and a woman who was broken, sitting together at the end of the day, creating something special while putting their lives back together,” Betty said.

But Dennis, a lifelong athlete employed in a profession where giving up is never an option, didn’t even consider it. Instead, he regrouped.

He had noticed the Chardonnay grapes were sturdier and surviving the extreme Arkansas climates much better than the Cynthiana and the Cabernet. So, in early 2013, he pulled out the four rows of weaker vines and replaced them with two more rows of Chardonnay and two rows of Tempranillo vines.

The change paid off. In August 2014, he harvested a small quantity but excellent quality of Chardonnay grapes. One year later, these grapes produced a limited amount of beautiful

dry, crisp, light golden champagne-colored wine with apple and pear tones.

Betty oversaw the conversion of an old workshop into a wine processing and tasting room, completed this summer. After only one successful crop, it is indicative of Dennis’ faith he will produce future vintages. The wine the Woodys produce is private stock, for home consumption or sharing with friends.

In 2015, Bacchus, the god of grape harvest and wine, at last smiled down fully upon the Woodys and their little vineyard. For the first time in nine years, each vine was at capacity with plump, healthy grapes.

For 14 hours on a sweltering August day, the tiny team of Dennis, Betty, her cousin Martha Burks and a rescued dog named Oliver worked from sunup until sundown, picking and culling grapes, pressing and straining the juice into containers to begin the long process of fermentation.

At Cowie Wine Cellar’s 2015 competition for home winemakers, a bottle of Woody Vineyard 2014 Chardonnay took a silver medal.

And with a little bit of luck, next summer, friends and family will again enjoy the fruits of labor of a man who refused to give up on his dream.

Wilma Hill is loopy – in making beautiful hooked rugs

I

f all the wool that Wilma Hill has ever hooked could be measured, it might easily reach the Hooked Rug Museum of North America, which now houses one of her masterpieces.

Her 7-foot diameter wool rug, a replica of a fine mosaic tile emblem of the Louisiana State University mascot, is now in the Nova Scotia, Canada, museum.

It is 2,300 miles to Chester, Nova Scotia, where Wilma’s husband, Carl, drove her and the rolled-up, heavy LSU rug in July after the museum added it to its collection.

Wilma notes it was also Carl who originally knelt on the floor of the 1932 Huey P. Long Field House along with her to painstakingly trace the mosaic’s pattern. The couple, who met at the University of Arkansas, lived for many years in Baton Rouge, La., where Carl was a professor of kinesiology at LSU and she was a teacher of music in public schools.

She doesn’t count the hours she spends hooking wool in simple loops through a linen backing – she says she considers her rugmaking a creative challenge and relaxing pleasure.

Hooked wool rugs, she explained, are both works of art and a domestic craft. Whether in elaborate patterns or simple folk-art shapes, thin strips of wool fabric (not yarn) are pulled in single loops through a backing of linen or burlap to create a floor covering that gives warmth, color and comfort to a home.

The art of hooking wool rugs by this method can be found from the time of the early settlement of North America and is often associated with the Colonial states.

A thrifty art, hooking with scraps of wool made use of every bit of the sturdy textile that had been created by shearing a sheep, spinning yarn, dyeing for color and weaving it into fabric. Wool is tough, long-lasting, sheds water to a degree, and resists dirt.

After rugs began to be machine-made and expensive, humble hooked rugs were a craft men and women could make themselves. The rugs Wilma makes are elevated to an art form. Hooked wool rugs, primitive, antique or new, are highly valued and never go out of fashion. The craft, no longer a necessity, is enjoyed by many, she said.

In fact, this mannered, proper lady who was regularly asked to be former mayor Ray Baker’s pianist for official occasions loves to joke that she is a “licensed hooker,” because she qualified for a rug-hooking teaching certification. She first learned to hook in Chattanooga, Tenn., when Carl taught at the University of Tennessee.

While living in Baton Rouge, Wilma taught classes in her own home rug studio. She also held community classes here and is still willing to encourage those who want to learn the art.

“I usually start out beginners with a ‘table rug’ or a small piece,” she said. Those who are “hooked” on the craft may challenge themselves to the variety of projects Wilma has created – from area rugs to small mats, in patterns from primitive to modern, or wholly original designs with subtly blended colors of her own choice.

“I encourage my students to branch out,” she said. “I don’t color plan. I’m not compulsive about following a pattern.” She has freestyled an astonishing variety of designs over the years.

“Currently in the Fort Smith Regional Art Museum, I have a hooked portrait of a hand holding a cell phone with a picture of my grandson, Ransom,” she said. “I had to find an iPhone to copy because I still don’t use one!”

Her work has been included in many exhibits and has received numerous awards. The LSU Tiger is also pictured in a large-format book “Hooked Rugs of the Deep South” by Jessie A. Turbayne. She originally intended the tiger rug for her son Barry, who attended LSU. “He transferred to the University of Arkansas and is a Razorback fan, then married an equally avid Texas Longhorn. I can’t add another conference,” she laughed.

She and Carl considered offering the tiger to LSU alum and pro basketball great Shaquille O’Neal, but wasn’t sure it could be protected as long from “critters” as it will be in a museum.

Moths and dampness are the mortal enemy of wool. Now, she is reassured her most intricate work can last for hundreds of years, as many carefully preserved wool rugs have done.

Disastrous moisture in the form of Hurricane Katrina drove the Hills back to Fort Smith, where they are very happy to spend their retirement. Carl can be found fishing as often as he can get away with it, while she hooks at least 30 minutes a day.

Wilma’s father, W.A. Downum, was pastor of Midland Heights Methodist Church and she attended Fort Smith schools. They are now active members of First Methodist Church.

Their family history – and her beautiful art – make a warm and colorful home in Fort Smith.

Up, up and away!

On Oct. 16-17, and maybe for a few days before and after, watch the skies for a possible glimpse of colorful hot air ballons making stately ascensions in the area. It is Poteau Balloon Fest time!

Or better yet, see them for yourself by taking the short drive to Poteau, which has established this balloon fest and its surrounding fun as one of Oklahoma’s best-liked festival attractions. The festival attracts more than 20,000 people to the area each year.

All events concerning the artfully designed, enormous hot-air ballons are “wind and weather permitting.” Balloon ascents are most likely between 7-10 a.m. and 4-7 p.m. Festival planners cannot guarantee balloon activities at specific times. But that’s all the more reason to go to the LeFlore County Fairgrounds to watch the whole fascinating process. Balloon pilots will inflate what look like colorful circus tents from flat upon the ground into the thrilling giant orbs when readying for an early morning or late afternoon flight.

New attractions for the 2015 Balloon Fest include the debut of Cirque Adventures, a high-flying acrobatic family act that entertains with several shows on Friday and Saturday.

Also performing are the Lawbreakers and Peacemakers, who take the crowd into the past with legendary, historical and humorous reenactments as they portray the era with a mixture of comedy and melodrama and informative firearm safety demonstrations.

The popular mud pit area opens Friday night for the inaugural Twin Cities Redi Mix BurnOut Competition, Rumble on the River ATV/UTV Mud Race and the Pumpkin Mud Run. Events planned for Saturday are the Annual Rumble on the River Mud Bog, a Little Miss and Mr. Balloon Fest Pageant and pet contests. Magician Jonathan Meyer will be performing throughout the day. Saturday evening is the LJ Jenkins Bull Riding competition.

Many more activities such as Raceday Park, a Carl Albert State University Pep Band performance, carnival rides, K9 dog demonstrations and EMS's "Take 10 for CPR” will also be part of the festivities.

Some shows and attractions are not included with gate admission and require a separate fee, such as helicopter rides, Mean Machine Monster Truck Rides, tethered balloon rides, carnival rides and the Bull Riding Finals. The carnival offers discounted armband pricing.

Tickets are also sold 10 for $25. Tethered balloon ride are $10 per person, subject to an age, height and weight restriction.

Festival admission tickets are $5 and can be purchased at a discount in advance at the Poteau Chamber of Commerce. Ride tickets will be available from individual vendors or attraction operators.

Gates are open noon-11 p.m. Oct. 16; 9 a.m.-11 p.m. Oct. 17.

Humane Society appeals for funds and hopes to Empty the Shelter and more October fundraisers pitch in for pets

elilah was just a puppy when she was brought into the Sebastian County Humane Society. An adorable Boston Terrier with a personality to match, she came to them with deformities in two of her legs. In some shelters, this type of disfigurement would have sealed Delilah’s fate, but not at the Sebastian County Humane Society. Thanks to the generosity of donors, including Delilah’s soon-to-be owner, she was able to receive the orthopedic surgery needed to restore her to health.

Happy endings like this one are the reason the Sebastian County Humane Society needs volunteers and donations of pet food and funds. It is the hope that all animals who come to the shelter will find a forever home. For this to become a reality, the generosity of both those willing to adopt and those willing to give financial support are needed.

Empty the Shelter, Oct. 23-24 is an event at which pets may be adopted at a reduced cost.

Individuals and families will be able to take home a new furry best friend for $20. The shelter will extend its hours on these two days from 9 a.m.-6 p.m.

Animals available for adoption at this event will already have been spayed or neutered, dewormed, microchipped, vaccinated and have treated for flea and tick prevention.

“In other words, they are all healthy and ready for a new home!” said assistant executive director Bekah Trotter.

Adopting a pet has never been easier, and the same is true of making financial contributions. A convenient bank draft option is available to donors who wish to give on a monthly basis, and no amount is insignificant. According to Trotter, even a few dollars a month can have a huge effect. Bank draft forms are available at the Sebastian County Humane Society.

“Donations have been down. At the same time, our population is rising,” said board member Tonya Rogers. According to Rogers, the shelter is taking in more strays and victims of owner surrender, but there has been a decrease in adoptions. The Sebastian County Humane Society does not receive any government funding. Therefore, the need for financial support is urgent.

“This is not a kill shelter,” said Rogers. Animals often come to the shelter with broken limbs or in very poor health. The Humane Society sees to it that these dogs and cats receive the necessary medical care. Now the Humane Society is asking for help to continue this good work and to ensure that more animals receive what they need next: a loving home.

APPLE PIE CUPCAKES Filling: 6 cups tart apples, peeled, cored and diced 1 tbsp. lemon juice 1 cup granulated sugar 1/2 cup brown sugar, lightly packed 1/2 tsp. cinnamon 1/3 cup cornstarch 1/4 tsp. salt 1 cup boiling water Cupcakes: 1 cup salted butter, slightly softened 2 cups granulated sugar 3 large eggs 11⁄2 tsp. pure vanilla extract 21⁄2 cups all-purpose flour 2 tsp. baking powder 1/2 tsp. cinnamon 1 cup milk Cinnamon Whipped Cream: 11⁄2 cups heavy whipping cream, cold 3 tbsp. powdered sugar 1/8 tsp. cinnamon Filling: In a large bowl, squirt about a tablespoon of lemon juice on diced, peeled apples. Toss to coat. In a heavy saucepan, combine water, cornstarch, both sugars, cinnamon and salt. Whisk over medium high heat until mixture comes to a boil. Continue whisking until mixture thickens and darkens to a very thick gravy-like consistency. Add apples and cover. Reduce heat to a simmer and simmer for about 20 minutes or until apples have reached desired tenderness. Remove from heat and let cool.

Cupcakes: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a large bowl, mix together flour, baking powder and cinnamon. Set aside.

In the bowl of a mixer, beat butter and sugar on medium speed until light and fluffy, about 2 minutes. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each. Add vanilla.

With the mixer on medium low, add flour and milk alternately, starting and ending with flour mixture and scraping the bowl as needed. Fill muffin tins 2/3 full. Bake for about 15 minutes or until center of cupcakes spring back when lightly touched. Remove from oven and let cool completely on a wire rack.

To Assemble: Using a small knife, cut the center out of each cupcake and fill to overflowing with apple filling. Right before serving, prepare and top with cinnamon whipped cream.

Cinnamon Whipped Cream: In a chilled metal mixing bowl, whip cold heavy whipping cream, powdered sugar and cinnamon on high speed with your mixer whisk attachment until stiff.

Spoon or pipe onto cupcakes.

CARAMEL APPLE BUTTERFINGER BARS 2 cups all-purpose flour 2 cups quick-cook oats 11⁄2 cups packed brown sugar 1 tsp. baking soda 11⁄4 cups butter, melted 2 cups tart apples – peeled, cored and thinly sliced 1 jar caramel ice cream topping 1/2 cup all-purpose flour 5 regular size Butterfinger Bars, roughly chopped Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line a 9x13-pan with foil and spray well with nonstick spray.

In a large bowl, combine flour, brown sugar, quick oats and baking soda. Stir in melted butter until completely mixed in. Press 3/4 of mixture into pan and bake for 9 minutes.

Spread apple slices evenly over crust.

In a small pan, heat caramel and flour over medium heat until it starts to bubble. Remove from heat and pour over apple slices.

Sprinkle Butterfinger pieces over the top, and top with remaining crust mixture, crumbling evenly over bars. Bake for 20 minutes or until golden brown. Remove and let cool to room temperature before covering with foil and chilling completely.

Place sliced apples in a large bowl.

Combine cup of sugar, 1 tablespoon flour and cinnamon and cloves and toss with the apples, coating completely. Spread apples in a 9x13 pan and sprinkle 1/4 cup water over the top.

In a large bowl, combine oats, flour, brown sugar, baking powder and baking soda. Pour melted butter over mixture and combine thoroughly until crumbly. Sprinkle evenly over apple mixture.

Bake for about 45 minutes, until apples are bubbly and topping is lightly browned.

Top with whipped cream or ice cream.

Fall is apple time in Arkansas – even without the hype always associate fall with festivals and fairs, and festivals and fairs with food.

Specifically in this case, apples: candy apples and caramel apples – not really what the person who coined the phrase about “an apple a day” had in mind.

On one of the first sweater-weather days of the fall, I found myself near the town of Lincoln, Ark., Home of the Arkansas Apple Festival.

Lincoln was once known as the Apple Capital of Arkansas and you can still buy apples at Apple Town, its old-fashioned farm stand. This is just the type of place you love to stumble upon and I hit the jackpot as apple farmer and owner Bryan Reed and his wife, Jane, took a moment to talk with me about their family history.

“My family came to this area in 1827 and four generation later, we are still selling apples,” Bryan said. Jane proudly pointed out the apple peeler purchased in 1875 by James Franklin Reed, great-great-grandfather to Bryan.

When I asked Bryan why he stayed in the apple business instead of selling his land to developers, he smiled and said, “I love the smell.

There is nothing that smells better than an apple orchard in the spring and then again in the fall.”

I was captivated and decided I needed to check into planting an apple tree.

Reed is not the only person who loves the smell of apple blossoms. In 1901, the Arkansas General Assembly named the apple blossom our state flower. I found this and so much fascinating information about Arkansas apple mania while viewing a digital exhibit “Fruit-Full Arkansas Apples” through the library of Crystal Bridges Museum.

Affectionately known as Mr. Arkansas Apple, University of Arkansas professor of horticulture emeritus Dr. Roy Rom, who was a consultant for this project, and I had a great conversation about apples and the history of the apple industry. Dr. Rom explained that at its height in 1919, 5.5 million bushels of apples were being shipped out of Arkansas, which, at the time, produced more apples than any other state.

Apples were dried, made into cider, vinegar and even brandy. In 1852, a wagon train filled with apples traveled to Van Buren to be shipped by boat to Little Rock. An exhibit of Arkansas apples won all major categories at the 1905 St. Louis World’s Fair and the Arkansas Black won first prize at a 1904 exhibition in Paris, France, according to Dr. Rom.

The Southwest Times Record in Fort Smith published full page features with road maps showing orchard locations, from 1932 to 1942.

One checkpoint recorded 540 cars on Highway 71. Brochures were printed calling this “The Land of a Million Smiles.” Visitor centers were staffed with “lovely young ladies of the Ozarks” to guide apple blossom tourists.

Several factors contributed to the demise of Arkansas apple mania, including a kind of agricultural “gold rush” to supply fruit, which sometimes lowered its quality.

Even though times change, wonderful heirloom apples grown in Arkansas, with their superior flavors, are enthusiastically embraced by foodies, locovares and hard cider enthusiasts.

You can find more and more antique varieties of apples being grown locally and sold at our farm stands and farmers markets.

These forgotten fruit trees can again be purchased by the kitchen gardener from local nurseries. Fall is the perfect time to plant apple trees.

I’m going to continue my research. Right now, I am leaning toward a Grimes Golden, which has been described as tasting “as sweet as a praline and juicy as a glass of cider.”

Unexpected? Understatement!

nough with the prefix “un-” – unless we add the word “unbelievable.”

Last month’s Unexpected Festival was IN-credibly energizing. It truly had to be seen to be believed as a group of international artists, in a little more than a week, rapidly made downtown Fort Smith their canvas and all of its citizens, their fans and friends.

Day after day, especially on the final, sunny Sept. 11-12 weekend, thousands of people thronged the sidewalks of Garrison and Rogers Avenues to see the epic murals as works-in-progress. As they watched, they encouraged and conversed with the artists from Brazil, Ireland, Belgium, Portugal, Puerto Rico and the U.K. “Can we get you a drink or something to eat?” was a frequent, friendly question.

Overheard: parents and grandparents explaining to younger folks that this is what downtown Fort Smith used to be like all the time – neighbors, friends and strangers shopping, eating and socializing.

The powerful good vibes and images created are still pulsing digitally around the globe. A week after the murals were completed, fest organizers were attempting to quantify its online reach.

Identifiable by tags, from the UnexpectedFS Instagram and Twitter, the artists’ Facebook and Instagrams, local TV and print media mentions and the publication Street Art and other blogs, the total media reach of the festival was about 1.5 million impressions. And it is still going on. Almost every spectator who came downtown seemed to have made it a personal mission to snap a digital photo or video to broadcast from their own social media channels.

According to Steve Clark and the full crew of the Unexpected, there will be another festival next year.

Bravo!

23 are a perfect choice for you. It also helps to be an alert and skillful driver. Head north through the Ozark Mountains from Ozark, ending up in Fayetteville. Whether the foliage has changed color or not, it is gorgeous in summer and fall foliage.

Mount Magazine Scenic Byway-Ark. 309 From Havana, Ark., the byway quickly ascends through forests on the slopes of Mount Magazine, Arkansas’s highest peak at 2,753 feet. In addition to beautiful views, you’ll find Mount Magazine State Park at the top. A lodge, conference center, restaurant and cabins with hot tubs await. Park roads lead to overlooks with expansive views of Blue Mountain Lake and the Ouachita Mountains to the south and of the Arkansas River Valley and the Ozark Mountains to the north. From Mount Magazine, the byway descends more than 2,300 feet to Paris, passing picturesque Cove Lake on the way.

North of town, the byway travels through rolling pastureland and hayfields, dotted with hardwood shade trees.

FALL TRAVEL The color change may begin this month in the Ozarks. The phenomenon of temperature, sunlight and moisture that activates nature’s paintbox moves slowly to the south until it reaches the peak of color in late October and early November. Yellows, reds, oranges, golds and even deep purple overtake the maples, sumac, sweet gum, oak, sassafras, and hickory. The state has 2.5 million acres of national forests – the Ozark, the Ouachita and the St. Francis – that make for prime fall foliage destinations.

To the north of Fort Smith The Ozark Mountain region begins its color change in early October, with the black gums taking on brilliant red tones. The peak usually occurs in late October to early November.

To the south and east The Ouachitas and Arkansas River Valley take on color within a week or so following the Ozarks, usually beginning in mid-October. Early-mid November is normally the peak time for this area.

Symphony season’s first concert reflects the Greatest Generation The Fort Smith Symphony musically addresses “The Greatest Generation” of men and women who gave their service through the World War II era, both military and civilian, and reflects on that pivotal time in the 20th century through music of the period and a new composition written about that significant time.

“The program includes the world premiere of ‘Resilience’ by Michael Schelle,” said John Jeter, the symphony’s music director.

The first of three movements of the new symphony concerns the European theater and is based on a melody that OCTOBER emerged from the horror of the concentration camps.

The second movement is about the Pacific theater, with some slight hints of Asian musical scales. The last movement is a recognition of resilience as the world began to recover from the long, global conflict and look toward the future and its hoped-for peace. Alaina Rea, viola, and Joshua DeVries, cello, are featured soloists in this piece.

Schelle’s contemporary style contrasts thoughtfully with the greatest of all American symphonies and a celebration of peace, the Symphony No. 3 by Aaron Copland.

“We will open with the ‘Star-Spangled Banner,’ but in John Williams’ arrangement for full orchestra,” Jeter said. “The second half will be Aaron Copland’s New World Symphony, completed in 1945. If you had to pick one symphony to call the greatest American symphony, it would be this.”

A special guest will be author John McManus, a leading American scholar on D-Day and the war, invited to give a pre-concert lecture from 6:30-7:15 p.m. about the American experience in World War II. McManus will also have a book-signing in the lobby before and after the concert. His latest title is “The Dead and Those About to Die,” a gripping account of the desperate battle of Omaha Beach on D-Day by the legendary 1st Infantry Division, known as the Big Red One. The UAFS Jazz Band will be performing ’40s-era music in the lobby.

College casts converge on UAFS for Kennedy Center State Theater Festival The Kennedy Center’s American College Theater Festival for the state of Arkansas will be held at the UAFS campus, featuring OCTOBER productions by college theater programs from across Arkansas and Oklahoma.

Four colleges and universities will compete in the festival, with each theater program performing a play for a panel of judges. Two awards – the Director’s Choice award, given to the best show as decided by the theater directors, and the Respondent’s Choice award, chosen by the professional show respondents from the Kennedy Center – will be given out.

Students can also win awards in design, acting, technology, directing and playwriting.

The university’s theater program has enjoyed perennial success at the state festivals, earning multiple awards, including numerous Director’s Choice and Respondent’s Choice awards.

Its mission is to provide funding, education and other opportunities to help foster creative music and artistic expression. It is geared toward helping young people develop and hone their musical and creative skills.

Activities held by the society include clinics, master classes, guest speakers, performances, open forums for songwriters, poets and more.

The society also provides musical instruments for students in need.

Events sponsored by the society include: real world music workshops, a Rising Stars series to give young musicians live venue performances, open mic poetry slams, young songwriters jam sessions, a Fall Into the Arts family festival, Teenz ’N 20s Eclectic Musical Showcases, a major artist series and an instrument donation program.

The 3rd Annual Bash at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 23 is a fundraiser for the non-profit society, with a spectacular line-up of friends and fellow musicians of the Baileys, held at The MovieLounge. Don leads and Terri has been a part of the Jazz Studies program at the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith for many years. A prestigious and talented group of musical acts donate their time to entertain.

Academy of the Arts presents On Stage series

he Academy of the Arts at the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith has released its schedule of events for the 2015-16 On Stage series, comprised of theatrical and musical performances presented throughout the school year.

The series features a variety of shows, from Disney classics like “Mulan” to renditions of gothic musicals like “The Addams Family.” The schedule also includes musical performances by the Youth Symphony Orchestra and the Children’s Choir.

Dr. Rosilee Russell is the executive director of the academy.

Rock – Music That Moved Fort Smith: Part I 18801945 will open Oct. 15 with a 5 p.m. reception.

Dr. Kevin Jones, associate professor of english and rhetoric, will present a 6 p.m. program on William Worth Bailey Jr. and Katherine Price Bailey. The Baileys operated the Southwest School of Musical Arts in Fort Smith and started the Fort Smith Symphony in 1923, the first in Arkansas. William Worth Bailey Jr. was a Fort Smith native and a renowned blind violinist known as the “American Paganini.” Also featured in the exhibition are the 1887 Grand Opera House, the 1911 New Theater and the Hartford Music Co. and Institute.

Musicians featured in the exhibit include: W.D.C. Botefuhr, first music director at the University of Arkansas in 1872, director of the Fort Smith Conservatory of Music in 1881 and teacher of William Worth Bailey Jr.; jazz great Alphonso Trent of Fort Smith and his orchestra; gospel composer Albert Brumley with the Hartford Music Institute; the inventor of the bazooka, Van Buren native Bob Burns; and KWHN radio station at the Goldman Hotel in Fort Smith. Artifacts include a “shape-note” songbook with “I’ll Fly Away” by Albert Brumley; vintage instruments from the museum’s collection and loaned from the community; and a large card-mounted photograph of Botefuhr. View a piano from the R.C. Bollinger Music Co. and pianos that belonged to Hattie Mae Butterfield and Ocie Payne, all of Fort Smith. Listen to a recording of the Alphonso Trent Orchestra and a wire recording of a quartet from the Hartford Institute. A video of Bob Burns playing the bazooka can be seen. In conjunction with the exhibit are a December program featuring “shape-note” singing by the Shankle Sisters of Hartford and an W.D.C. Botefuhr April 30 showing of a new documentary on Alphonso Trent. The exhibit will run through May. An avid whitewater paddler, he has frequently taken rafting trips on western rivers such as the Middle Fork of the Salmon, the Yampa, the Salt, the San Juan and the Colorado through the Grand Canyon. Crane has rowed a raft solo through the Grand Canyon three of the five times he has made the 225-mile journey. He is drawn to river scenes and moving water, a theme found in most of his works.

Crane is currently in his third term as Pulaski County Circuit Clerk. He began working in Arkansas state government in 1977 for then-Attorney General Bill Clinton and has worked on the staffs of four attorneys general, as legal counsel to Gov. Clinton (where he was working when he painted “The Summer of ‘79”), an agency director, staff attorney for the PSC and chief deputy state auditor until he left for his elected post in 2011.

Exhibit highlights landscapes, portraits and still life paintings by American artist Patrick DECEMBER Angus (1953-1992). An artist from early childhood, Angus produced hundreds of works throughout the course of his shortlived career. Living on the fringes of mainstream society, Angus was deemed by playwright Robert Patrick as “The ToulouseLautrec of Times Square,” due to the fact he illustrated the gritty and less glamorous aspects of New York. This body of more than 50 works focuses on another dimension of this exceptional artist and explores Angus' evolution from a novice to a seasoned artist. This is the first museum exhibit of Angus' work and will showcase more than 50 never-before-seen pieces from a private collection. The last exhibit during his lifetime was in 1992, at the University of Santa Barbara where Angus met acclaimed artist David Hockney, who purchased six works for his personal collection. The incredible story follows the family of 10 as they fled communist Vietnam for a better life in the United States. Vinh Chung was an ELL and Gifted and Talented student, as well as being a star football player at Fort Smith Northside High School. He graduated Harvard College magna cum laude and attended Harvard Medical School. Dr. Chung studied at the University of Sydney as a Fulbright Scholar and completed a master of pharmaceutical sciences. He also holds a master of theology from the University of Edinburgh. Oct. 20 Fort Smith Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution Program Local resident and reenactor Baridi Nkokheli will discuss the historic figure deputy U.S. marshal Bass Reeves, the first African-American deputy U.S. marshal west of the Mississippi River. A DAR member meeting will be held after the program. This year, the DAR celebrates its 125th year as a national service organization founded by an act of Congress in 1890 as a non-profit, non-political volunteer women’s service

organization dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history and better education for children. The Fort Smith Chapter was organized in 1912 and welcomes the application for membership of any woman 18 or older, who can trace her lineal descent from a patriot of the American revolution, not limited to revolutionary soldiers. Women with ancestors who were American civil servants or who gave material or patriotic support to the revolutionary cause are eligible. Oct. 29 Larry Foley's “The First Boys of Spring” Fort Smith Film Premier Emmy award-winning filmmaker, UA journalism professor and Fort Smith native Larry Foley will screening of his new film, “The First Boys of Spring,” which chronicles five decades of baseball history in the making in Arkansas. Before the Grapefruit League in Florida, before the Cactus League in Arizona, Spring baseball was played in Hot Springs. Babe Ruth, Cy Young, Hank Aaron, Jackie Robinson, Josh Gibson, Satchel Paige and Stan Musial – the who's who of baseball – trained and played in our neighbor city to the south. The Chicago White Stockings were the first to trek south to Hot Springs, when the team's owner and manager decided the boys needed a place to practice and get ready for the season ahead. Clayton House Series: The Cravens Family Take a pictorial ride through Fort Smith history with this presentation by the fifthgeneration of the Cravens family, David Cravens. The Regions Bank city president will reach back to the vigorous leadership of his great-great-grandfather William Murphy Cravens, born in 1833. He fought in major Civil War battles as a Confederate lieutenant and, then, after moving to Fort Smith in 1868, became a renowned defense lawyer. Cravens served as counsel for the most famous trials in Judge Parker’s court. The story continues with his son William Ben Cravens, born in 1872, a congressman, Fort Smith city attorney and longtime leader of Fort Smith civic and social circles. Next, William Fadjo Cravens, born in 1899, served in the Navy in World War I and followed in his father’s footsteps as congressman and Fort Smith city attorney. William Fadjo Cravens Jr., David Cravens’ father, retired as vice president of Merchants Bank (now Regions) after serving for 31 years. He loved Fort Smith history, playing a role in establishing the National Historic Site and developing a treasure-trove of historic photographs and documents.

The Wallace Children's Commemorative Monument and accompanying tablet markers at Fairview Cemetery dates to 1840, and commemorates the deaths of three young children belonging to Alfred and Martha Wallace. The children died in 1840, 1842, and 1845.

Battle of Honey Springs Reenactment The Battle of Honey Springs, fought July 17, 1863, was the most important Civil War engagement in Indian Territory.

Weekend activities include two battle reenactments with infantry, cavalry, artillery and medical personnel.

Visitors can take self-guided tours through Union, Confederate and civilian camps. There will also be military drills, cooking demonstrations and other living history programs. “Sutlers Row” features a number of vendors selling 19th century reproduction military equipment, clothes, books and souvenirs. The battle reenactment will attract more than 1,500 participants, making it the state's largest such event. The battle was unique in that white soldiers were the minority on both sides of the military conflict. Approximately 9,000 soldiers were involved in the battle, including Cherokee and Creek regiments, other American Indian forces, veteran Texas regiments and the 1st Kansas Colored Volunteers, the first black regiment in the Union army. $5 adults, children 12 and under are free.

Altrusa International’s Oct. 27 event offers diners a sampling of the finest fare of local restaurants, bakeries and caterers. It’s all to raise funds for local organizations that help increase literacy.

The Oct. 27 Taste of Fort Smith event features the area’s finest food and beverage sampling from more than 50 vendors during its two sessions – lunch and dinner.

With plate in hand, diners who attend will enjoy a bit of this or a slice of that, all of it delicious, prepared by the participating restaurants. The opportunity includes entrees, sandwiches, fresh fruits, beverages, breads, exotic foods and of course, desserts. Every chef shows out and there are people’s choice awards given at the end for the dining fare and for presentation at each station.

A ticket is required for admission by adults and children, age 6 and older, per session.

Tickets are $15 from any Simmons Bank location, the Fort Smith Chamber of Commerce and the Literacy Council of Western Arkansas.

“The Taste” historically draws more than 1,500 attendees during the two sessions. This year’s goal is to raise more than $25,000 during the pair of two-hour sessions.

The beneficiary organizations will include the Literacy Council of Western Arkansas and Crawford County Volunteers for Literacy.

Additional donations will be made to the Fort Smith Public Library, Community Dental Clinic, Single Parent Scholarship Fund and Inter-faith Community Preschool.
