EDITOR’S NOTES

21 years of bringing you Entertainment Fort Smith – it’s always been about a love of our home Hello, dear readers, especially those of you who have been reading the magazine cover-to-cover all these 21 years. (Hi, Lila!) Thank you.

This magazine has always been about all of you who make Fort Smith and this hometown area every good thing that it is.

Twenty years was a big “decade” mark, a “zero” anniversary such as people tend to celebrate. But 21 is one more year and quite worthy of remarking.

Once again, we’re thwarted from doing one of our “cast of hundreds” photos that we get such a kick out of organizing. And now, there are drones to make that easier than the ways we once put lots of faces on our covers. I used to dream of directing a crane shot. Now, I want to take a drone shot! But it’s still not an ideal time to crowd shoulder-to-shoulder for as long as it would take to get an epic picture.

Let’s stay a little spaced apart for as long as it takes, OK? I’m willing to do that so children can safely go to school. I know how much it means that people are able to visit their relatives in residential care. I know how crucial it is to be able to be beside someone you love who is seeing a doctor or, please not, is confined to a hospital. I’ll keep wearing a mask, even after my shots, to try to keep those things possible.

Thank you, again and always, to the underwriters of this magazine you have enjoyed, free, for 21 years – the advertisers who choose to communicate with their customers in our pages. From August 2000 to August 2021, I want to call out several faithful friends in particular: Almost every issue has included an ad from one of many Neumeier family businesses. Back in 2000, it was Neumeier’s Rib Room. In this issue, it is Neumeier’s Nursery & Greenhouses. Thank you.

We also deeply appreciate Newton’s Jewelers – thanks to Kelly Newton and his family for showing your fine jewelry and services here. Naturally, there’s another lavish raffle prize Newton’s has donated for a fundraiser, in this issue.

Program of the Fort Smith International Film Festival Film fans can choose their own viewing schedule from the 132 official selections from 32 countries that will be screened at this inaugural film festival in downtown Fort Smith in mid-August.

The Fort Smith International Film Festival on August 13-14, 2021, holds its inaugural event titled ‘Through Their Eyes.’

The festival will explore the many masks we wear and the eyes through which we see.

Our festival celebrates the artistic expression and diverse experiences of filmmakers from the United States and all over the globe.

Through film, we lend our eyes to another, to see through another’s perspective and walk in their shoes. Celebrate international and diverse artists in categories that include People of Color, Indigenous, Music Video, Student Film, Documentary, Short Film and Animation. Make your own viewing choices from more than 132 official selections from 32 countries. 52 international films are presented.

From the entrants, juries will award prizes, including scholarships for students, in a number of diverse categories at the award ceremony on Saturday night.

The poster for this inaugural festival is the work of local artist and muralist JK Burchett, reflecting its theme “Through Their Eyes.”

Burchett used as his model the Cherokee Nation History and Preservation officer Catherine Foreman Gray, representing the Fort Smith region’s multi-national heritage.

She also is producer of The Cherokee Way, an online video series that focuses on Cherokee history and culture.

This documentary follows the story of Mexican artist Octavio Logo as he paints life-size murals in preparation for his Exodus Exhibit on immigration in Northwest Arkansas. Intertwined are stories of immigrants who have inspired his work, and interviews with immigration experts and community activists who help navigate us through the complicated world of immigration today.

4:30 p.m. Indians, Outlaws, Marshals and the Hangin' Judge Larry Foley Documentary Feature US Told in first person using the actual words written by St. Louis Republic newspaper reporter Ada Patterson in September 1896, this real-life story is set in and around Fort Smith, Ark., in the same time and place as the fictional Western novel and film, True Grit. Patterson narrates, much as Mattie Ross tells the story in the Charles Portis classic. With careful and honest detail to the words and visual history of the era, the film recreates Patterson’s interview with Judge Isaac Parker, conducted Sept. 1, 1896, only a few months before his death. Much of the movie was filmed in Fort Smith or at the actual historic locations.

It has created trauma and dysfunction within native communities over five generations. This film explores the lasting effects of these assaults on Native culture and how they are still ingrained in the dominant culture today.

Supporting storylines follow Sharif El Mekki, principal at a majority-Black charter school in West Philadelphia, and Malcolm London, a young poet activist fighting for criminal justice reform in Chicago. Notable voices include Malcolm Jenkins, Carmelo Anthony, Jemele Hill, Dr. Harry Edwards, former Secretary of Education John King and more. A rare glimpse into the emotional landscape of Black males, illuminating their full humanity, vulnerability and resilience.

Jackson Lyons, Max Winters Narrative Feature US 10:10 p.m. The Lost Hunter Jeremy Doyer, troubled by the infidelity of his girlfriend, takes off on a hunting trip in order to escape his problems. The owner of the land joins his hunt but tells Jeremy a local legend of a lost hunter who roams the woods and kills those who get lost. Gradually, Jeremy begins to doubt his own sanity and the identity of his companion.

Film festival planned over many cups of coffee in Fort Smith – and many glasses of wine, in Italy The inaugural Fort Smith International Film Festival was planned by a young, nonprofit film society, formed to highlight and connect local film makers and technicians. The River Valley Film Society also wanted to invite the vision of international film directors and screen a wide survey of films for the enjoyment of a local audience.

Meeting in familiar downtown coffee shops, a handful of film society members recruited volunteers and sponsors to make this first festival possible. But three members also took a last-minute flight to Italy to attend and connect directly with a similar film festival in the town of Cisterna.

Brandon Chase Goldsmith, executive director of the FSIFF, and Clay Pruitt, a member who is shooting a “making of ” documentary about the festival’s creation, were joined by Caroline Speir, executive director of the Fort Smith Museum of History, for this cultural exchange just one month before their own event begins, Aug. 13-14.

Goldsmith and Pruitt wanted to learn from another festival bringing international culture to a smaller city. (Cisterna, about an hour from Rome, has about half the population of Fort Smith). Speir intended to renew a “twin city” relationship created in 1984 out of Cisterna’s respect for Fort Smith native Gen. William O. Darby, who led American forces fighting for the liberation of Italy during World War II. Darby was killed in action two days before all German forces in Italy surrendered.

Darby is remembered here with a bronze statue erected on Garrison Avenue by the Army Rangers he helped to create, the William O. Darby Foundation, a preserved childhood home, and an extensive exhibit at the Fort Smith Museum of History. A junior high is named for him. He is memorialized reverently in Cisterna with a high school and many war monuments.

Touring historic sites marking the fierce battles fought in the hard-hit city.

The Fort Smithians were “overwhelmed” with hospitality, Goldsmith said, from both the film festival and the civic leaders of Cisterna, who led them on daily tours and showered them with official presentations.

Speir will be integrating new understanding into Museum of History presentations. Experiences Goldsmith and Pruitt had will help shape our film festival.

“A goal of our film festival is to bring the world to the River Valley, and to show off our region’s talent, which I see as extending across the ocean to our Italian twin,” Goldsmith said in his appearances there. “A way to rekindle cultural bonds is to see life through each other’s perspectives and what better way to do it than through film?”

The Fort Smith festival’s theme is “Through Their Eyes,” an inclusive idea of the universality of film. The festival created categories for directors who are Indigenous, People of Color, students and adults. It selected 132 films from 32 countries. There are 52 international films. At least one film was submitted to both the Cisterna and Fort Smith festivals, Goldsmith noted.

Our three envoys returned inspired by their Italian hosts to welcome attendees of this first film festival with as much interest and warmth.

“After each night’s films, we broke out into conversations in cafés and bars to talk about them,” Goldsmith said. “Films bring communities together, something all people are craving to experience again.”

Lively, friendly Mildred Johnson is proud to say that when Miss Laura’s Visitor Center originally opened, on a Monday, “I was there Wednesday to volunteer.”

Ever since Fort Smith’s unique welcome center was established, Mildred has been welcoming whoever comes through the door and telling them about the city. This year, she is being recognized for giving our city an incredible 5,000 hours of her time.

“It’s fun to meet people,” Mildred said. “I’ve met people from China, who came along with interpreters. I’ve met people from every state and I don’t know how many foreign countries.”

Sometimes, Miss Laura’s Visitor Center is the only stop a traveler will ever make here. Others may be beginning a stay. Volunteers lead them on a tour (rated PG) of the former brothel, give a bit of history of Fort Smith and answer questions about current opportunities visitors may enjoy. There is plenty of literature (such as this magazine) to offer visitors, to lead them onward to explore Fort Smith. There are apps to download, as well.

As she guides them through the restored Victorian-era house, the former schoolteacher asks them not rush ahead of her to different artifacts.

“Don’t steal my thunder,” she cautions them. “We’ll get to that.”

Mildred also hands visitors a brochure about Miss Laura’s, itself. “Now, you can read this and see how much I lied to you,” she jokes with them.

Each guide has their own style, using the same information, but there’s only a loose script. Their individual personalities are an asset to the tour.

“Volunteering is a gift, a donation of oneself,” said Ally Dean, who is now tasked with recruiting Miss Laura’s volunteer corps. “It is a labor of love.”

She’s deeply appreciative of the four volunteers who are serving at Miss Laura’s after a long closure to the public. And her mission is steep – it ideally takes a pool of 60 to 70 people to staff the tours of the visitor center. At minimum, 26 people are required. The goal is to schedule folks in pairs to cover two shifts per day Monday-Saturday and Sunday afternoon. The shift times are 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and 12:30-4 p.m.

Ally and the staff of the Convention & Visitors Bureau are continuing the tradition of showing appreciation to the volunteers, noting their length of service and making occasions to celebrate and socialize together.

While Mildred previously has been presented a special clock and a diamond star necklace (as one of Miss Laura’s “Starrs”), it was Ally who noticed this faithful volunteer had given even more hours since then.

Mayor George McGill was to decree a “Mildred Johnson Day” as this magazine went to press, to recognize her outstanding 5,000 hours of service.

“Our volunteers love Miss Laura's, the building, her history and legacy, and what she represents to the city of Fort Smith. They love greeting visitors, sharing the story of Miss Laura's while learning stories from all over the world, and helping those visitors choose what else they might do while they are here, from lunch and lodgings to local attractions and other historic sites,” Ally said. She is actively recruiting more guides now, of all ages. Anyone over age 18 with time to give is invited to get in touch with her. “I can't wait to watch more people fall in love with Miss Laura's and what we do here.”

Mildred certainly loves her once-a-week shift at Miss Laura’s. She’s tickled to give men and kids a tin marshal’s star. There are souvenir certificates of health for women, replicas of historical documents from Miss Laura’s days of operation. “I give them a clean bill of health,” Mildred says, eyes twinkling.

“I tell them they can charge whatever they want to.”

4 Roma tomatoes, cored and quartered 1 red bell pepper, cored, seeded and chopped 1 yellow onion, peeled and chopped 1 jalapeño, seeds and ribs removed 1 chipotle pepper in adobo sauce 3 garlic cloves, peeled 2 teaspoons ground cumin 2 teaspoons salt 1 teaspoons chili powder 1/2 cup fresh cilantro leaves, loosely packed Juice of 1 lime 1/2 cup queso fresco, crumbled, divided

AIR FRYER ROASTED TOMATO SALSA WITH QUESO FRESCO Arrange tomatoes, bell pepper, onion, jalapeño, chipotle pepper and garlic cloves in the air fryer basket. Sprinkle cumin, salt and chili powder over vegetables.

Close air fryer and cook at 400 degrees for 20 minutes, periodically shaking the basket to ensure even roasting.

Allow vegetables to cool for 10 minutes before transferring them to the bowl of a food processor.

Add cilantro and lime juice and process the vegetables until they reach your desired salsa consistency (about 30 seconds). Adjust seasoning with salt as needed.

Transfer salsa to an airtight container and refrigerate for at least 8 hours or overnight.

Just before serving, stir 1/3 cup of queso fresco into salsa mixture. Garnish the top of the salsa with the remaining queso fresco and, if desired, some chopped fresh cilantro. Serve immediately.

Spread 1 tablespoon of pesto sauce on one side of each slice of bread.

Top 1 slice of bread with 1 slice each of cheese and prosciutto, and 1 tablespoon roasted pepper; top with 1 slice bread, pesto side down.

Grill sandwiches on a panini press over medium-high heat for 3 to 5 minutes per side or until bread is golden brown and cheese is melted.

Cut each panini into 6 pieces.

Tip: Panini's can also be cooked in a skillet.

BOW TIE PASTA SALAD 1 (8-ounce) box bow tie or other shaped pasta 1/3 cup light mayonnaise 2 tablespoons cider vinegar 1/4 teaspoon ground white pepper, or to taste 1/8 teaspoon hot pepper sauce, or to taste 4 ounces reduced-sodium baked ham or smoked turkey, diced 8 ounces reduced-fat Cheddar cheese 1/2 medium red pepper, finely chopped 2 scallions, green and white parts, minced 1/8 teaspoon paprika Cook pasta according to package directions, drain. Immediately rinse with cold water, drain well. Meanwhile, whisk together the mayonnaise, vinegar, relish, white pepper and pepper sauce in a small bowl; set aside in the refrigerator to chill. Combine the cooled pasta, ham, cheese, red pepper and scallions in a large bowl. Stir in the mayonnaise mixture just before serving. Garnish with paprika.

ROASTED RED PEPPER YOGURT DIP 1 (12 oz.) jar roasted red peppers, drained 2 (8 oz.) containers low-fat plain yogurt 1 (4 oz.) can chopped green chilies, drained 1 garlic clove, minced Puree red peppers in food processor or blender; drain again. Add remaining ingredients; mix until blended and refrigerate. Serve with assorted cut vegetables or pita wedges.

Fort Smith Symphony announces creative, adventurous new season After accomplishing last year’s season despite a series of obstacles and existential challenges, it seems fitting the Fort Smith Symphony will attempt the daring feat of live performance of the score starring the rip-roaringest adventurer of filmdom, Indiana Jones!

As the last concert of its newly announced 2021-22 season, music director John Jeter will lead the symphony in an extraordinary and daring live performance of the movie’s exciting John Williams score as the 1981 action/adventure classic, Raiders of the Lost Ark, screens above their heads for the concert audience.

This will be somewhat similar to, but far more difficult than, the accompaniment of a silent film by Charlie Chaplin that the symphony has previously accomplished, Jeter explained. “I think of it as a kind of ‘human-being-against-machine’ challenge. We’re excited to do it.”

“It’s an official Disney production. They digitally remove the music.

All the dialogue and sound effects are still in there,” Jeter described. He and the symphony’s artists are challenged to contribute, with perfect timing, the music that emphasizes and enhances the action, acting and spectacle of the movie.

“For the general public, think about where they interact with symphony orchestra in this day and age – it’s through film scores,” he said. “So, it’s artistically relevant in that way.”

There are other adventures in the new season. The symphony will again perform outdoors on the lawn of the U.S. Marshals Museum, something it was forced to do last year because of concerns over the indoor, airborne spread of infection. It proved feasible and even enjoyable so the symphony has elected to perform al fresco again in October, “Patriotic Pops.”

Miss K’s Dance Bungalow celebrates 10 years with Dance the Decades show AUG

Artistic director and choreographer Miss “K”atrina Steward, a Fort Smith native, celebrates 10 seasons of serving performing arts opportunities and instruction. Steward opened Miss K’s Dance Bungalow in 2011 in Fresno, Calif. She has been commuting between Arkansas and California since 2015, when she opened the Fort Smith studio.

“Bass Reeves: The Man & the Myth of the Lone Ranger from Fort Smith” Program and Book Signing by Sidney Thompson AUG

Sidney Thompson will read excerpts and discuss the historical and fictional fabric of his first two novels in The Bass Reeves Trilogy. Thompson is the author of “Follow the Angels,” “Follow the Doves” (2020) and “Hell on the Border” (2021).

These historical novels have won numerous awards for narrating the real-life story of Bass Reeves, the Arkansas native who, after escaping slavery by overpowering his master, a Confederate officer and Texas politician, became the one of the greatest lawman of the American Old West. Unsung for almost a century, Reeves is gaining a growing popular interest.

Reeves served as a deputy U.S. Marshal for the Federal Court of the Western District of Arkansas at Fort Smith, presided over by Judge Isaac C. Parker. Reeves rode into the Indian Territory to serve writs on dangerous criminals in the jurisdiction where the greatest number of deputy marshals were killed in the line of duty. This city honors the African-American officer with a bronze monument on Garrison Avenue.

Thompson is working to complete the third book of the trilogy. He holds an M.F.A. in creative writing from the University of Arkansas and a Ph.D. in American literature/African-American narratives from the University of North Texas. His other books include “You/Wee: Poems from a Father” (2018) and “Sideshow” (2006), winner of Foreword INDIES Silver Award for Short Story Collection of the Year.

Schriver (1925-2012) graduated from Fort Smith High School, was a Navy pilot in World War II and continued flying as the commandant of the Civil Air Patrol in the 1950s. He was also the founder of the Flight Masters Model Airplane Club of Fort Smith. Throughout his life, he collected aviation lithographs, most of which he donated to the Fort Smith Air Museum in 2008. After Schriver’s death, the remaining prints were donated by the Schriver family in 2018. The lithographs and models are exhibited with further historical displays and memorabilia curated by the Fort Smith Air Museum to recognize numerous notable pilots and aviation pioneers of this city and region.

Founder of Modern Widows Club visits to launch a Fort Smith chapter

Women who have faced the death of their partner are invited to meet the inspiring founder of the Modern Widows Club, a vibrant nonprofit organization dedicated to the well-being, support and encouragement of widows of all ages.

Carolyn Moor of Orlando, Fla., experienced the shocking loss of her husband when she was 37. She was left with two young children. In her journey to recover her life and care for her family, she found resources for widows like herself were sparse. She created the group to advocate for widowhood research and community resources. About 70 percent of women will experience widowhood in their lifetimes.

In two Fort Smith events, she will share how supporting widows locally, nationally and globally is of great social, community and biblical significance. Fort Smith was chosen as one of 10 cities to be highlighted during her 10-city #MoorLuvTour, celebrating the 10year anniversary of Modern Widows Club. Moor has good friends living here and also has family roots in central Arkansas.

After appearing as a featured guest on the Oprah Winfrey show, Moor was soon flooded with contacts from widows across the nation. In 2011, she found herself leading a new movement to empower women in widowhood to become extraordinary mentors, leaders and advocates.

An ice cream social for Fort Smith widows is open to all from 2-4 p.m. Aug. 21 at the Narthex of First United Methodist Church, 200 North 15th Street, Fort Smith. From 2-4 p.m. Aug. 22, Moor will speak at the Family Life Center of First United Methodist Church at 301 North 16th Street, Fort Smith.

Other community businesses and organizations are welcome to learn more about the many ways Fort Smith can serve widows, together. People such as funeral directors, attorneys, accountants, religious leaders, elder care workers and medical professionals are invited to the discussion. Moor holds an open, enlightening conversation on how a community can increase its support of widows.

Professionally, Moor is an award-winning interior designer, inter-faith minister and consultant. She has participated in the U.N. Commission on the Status of Women and the Global Leadership Summit community. A warm and engaging communicator, she has appeared on many radio and news broadcasts. Her work is recognized nationally and internationally, and she is honored to represent widows around the world.

ModernWidowClub.org is the hub of the organization and community Moor has created.

in cooperation with the Arkansas & Missouri Railroad are pleased to announce a special rail excursion from Van Buren to Winslow, Ark. The Farm-to-Dinner Train offers a fourcourse meal with a choice of prime rib roast or pan-roasted chicken breast entree in the dining car or prime rib or grilled chicken boxed dinner in the coach car. Both meals feature locally sourced fresh vegetables. Chef Wes Douglas has created the menu.

Enjoy a scenic, 70-mile round trip through the late-summer Boston Mountains aboard these comfortable period railcars. The route crosses trestles and climbs over the beautiful wooded slopes of the Boston Mountains.

The annual dinner train excursion raises funds for the Fort Smith Trolley Museum, which operates two fully restored electric streetcars in downtown Fort Smith and has a car barn full of future projects to get on the city’s trolley tracks. The trolley museum, with a library and more authentic rolling stock, is operated by volunteers.

A silent auction will be held on the trip back from Winslow. Meals included, $125 per person dining car; $75 per person coach car, available in advance online at fstm.org.

Gala to toast science and wellness “On Call” will be an exciting evening at the Arkansas Colleges of Health Education’s new Research Institute Health and Wellness Center. Some 350 guests will experience science in action, an amazing meal, signature drinks, dancing, a live auction and fabulous raffle prizes, on Sept. 25.

The evening centers on supporting life-changing health and wellness research, education and community outreach programs. It also will be a first look for many at the 318,000-square-foot facility, transforming from its former use as a corporate headquarters. This modern research facility will include the latest technology, in an atmosphere of creativity and exploration for faculty, students, researchers and the community. The value of the medical research conducted there will ripple outward into the community.

The black-tie event begins with an expertly curated beverage selection.

Along with live music, science will come to life in a variety of experiments demonstrated for the crowd. There will be a robust culinary experience with exquisite desserts, wonderful wines and conversation with friends.

Outstanding raffle prizes include a Rolex watch for ladies, valued at $19,450 and donated by Newton’s Jewelers.
