We hope there’s something for young, middle and older folks in this issue. It’s all there, if you opt to seize the summer days.

It certainly was a pleasure to have great guest writers and so many, many festivals, concerts, classes, get-togethers, play days and artful opportunities to overfill our event sections. There’s a lot to enjoy this summer.

Our most excited contributor was history man Tom Wing, who coaxed his long-time family friend Linda Mankin to give a cooking class at Arts On Main’s new culinary teaching kitchen.

Tom was a big fan of her former restaurant, The Corner House in Fort Smith. He’s convinced Linda to share some of her epic, popular recipes and show the class how to make them.

He’s right about the culture of food holding power in a community’s collective history. Proust’s memory triggered by biting into a madeline, a little cake, sparked his classic novel Remembrance of Things Past. Can a sandwich or a pie do the same? It seems to for Tom. We considered more memories when the Neumeier family decided to announce their retirement. Bill and Jody grew a nursery and greenhouse business – and a family – on North O Street that was more than a place to buy plants.

They also created a blooming oasis, a learning place and a destination for happy seasonal festivals.

They’re struggling to commit to retirement even after years of tiring labor. They have earned many years of happy retirement! We will miss the business, but everyone will keep their friendship.

It’s dear to us to see the Riverfront Blues Festival return and try a fresh experiment in its 31st year.

My late partner Linda Seubold and I became friends through our blues festival, in the late 1990s. I was, for a few years, its year-round coordinator (publicist) and she was writing more inches about blues than are printed in Memphis newspapers at her then-career as a columnist at the Southwest Times Record.

Closely observing how our blues festival proved that Fort Smith’s riverfront should be developed for music and recreation directly led to us founding this magazine of local culture. I’m proud and a little astonished that both the blues and the magazine are “all right,” as the song goes. Hey, hey.

So what about those folks who are young or in the middle I mentioned earlier?

We think y’all need to know a little about where you came from to know where you want to go.

You could pick up some pointers from entrepreneurs like the Neumeiers and Linda Mankin, who invented and provided something people really wanted and still remember fondly.

What can you do or create that will be beloved, years from now when you retire?

When you try, it will be people like these, who did their own thing before you, who will cheer you on the most.

Get a pen to mark up some choices of fun, adventure and learning, no matter your age. Then step out into summer and enjoy it.

They’ll celebrate the roots and blooms of a long career

ater this summer, when the “closed” sign goes up across the gates of Neumeier Nursery & Greenhouses, the beautiful property will be transformed into serving only as the pleasant, private home and gardens of Bill and Jo Ann, “Jody,” Neumeier.

After 54 years in business, the couple has resolved to retire by Aug. 1.

It really will take resolve. They’re announcing it now to enjoy celebrating with their customers through the busy summer gardening season.

Both are trying to make the mental adjustment after starting their complex, horticulturally based business from “three greenhouses and a cold frame” into the extensive nursery and greenhouses it became.

They have been attuned for almost a lifetime to the constant tending of living things, including raising a family while living at their workplace. The idea of free time is an unfamiliar concept.

There’s something that needs doing every hour of daylight at a nursery. Bill first learned he had the stamina and the talent to succeed as a nurseryman as a boy, when he worked for the family-owned McKee Nursery, formerly on Rogers Avenue.

He learned from an excellent teacher and took in other business skills and aspects when working for a floral business while in college.

Jody and Bill were married less than a year when he put two greenhouses in their backyard, where he grew groundcover plants for McKee. When they moved to a first house on North O Street, across the street from their current home, they expanded to the “three greenhouses and a cold frame” size.

They grew and sold bedding plants – their main crop was pansies.

Pansies are still a large part of their plant stock. Their office was the glassed-in front porch of the home. Jody also merchandised a few, inexpensive glass decorative gifts, pots and trays of houseplants.

“There were just a few things, but people bought them,” she recalled.

Bill operated a lawn maintenance service, with many residential clients throughout town, mowing himself and, increasingly, supervising employees.

Jody took care of retail nursery sales from home. “The kids were all little,” Jody recalled about her sons Billy and Joey. “We laughed because Lisa’s first word was ‘customer.’ When the doorbell rang, I would put her in her playpen and the boys had to watch her. She would say, ‘Customer, customer!’ when she heard the ring.”

They were in business there for seven years, but knew they could do more.

“It actually got to where we could tell exactly what we could make each year because that’s all the room we had,” she explained. “That’s all we could grow.”

Bill started taking the family for weekend drives to scout for larger places. Impulsively, Jody called the Gean family, who owned the large, red brick, 1904 home and acreage across North O Street from their house, although it was not offered for sale. The two families struck an agreement in 1976 for the Neumeiers to buy the house. It was so mutually pleasing to the families that Jody thinks of it as divine providence.

On five acres, there was finally room to flourish. Greenhouses were put up and, soon, a floral department was installed in the original brick carriage house where customers found the check-out register.

Bill grows landscape, bedding and container plants, perennials and annuals that are hardy and suitable for local cultivation, always while preparing for the upcoming season. He is sought for his expert advice and concern to help a customer experience successful gardening. He also is known for enforcing the rule that no customer should carry their own plants to their car and he carries as many or more as his employees, offering last words of instructions as he closes the car door.

Jody’s discerning taste helped them gradually shape the charming little carriage house into one of the area’s most appealing sources of garden-related decor. While checking out their geraniums or impatiens, customers might also discover candles, greeting cards, a glass terrarium, wind chimes, statuary or whimsical garden ornaments no one else has. There also were selections of bulbs, fertilizer and other practical garden supplies.

More than 30 years ago, Jody began holding a fall festival day with guest vendors and local artists. It became an annual tradition, attracting crowds of visitors who took “pumpkin portraits” in vignettes she created outdoors. Kids took pony rides and got their faces painted. Adults took home pumpkins, gourds, mums and classic fall garden decorations.

Other seasonal events included Christmas open house and, of course, the spring rush of gardeners ready to get out into the dirt with new plants.

Until recently, Neumeier Nursery was a fixture at the annual Lawn & Garden show, entering with verve in the competition to set up a sensational, living garden display in the convention center.

It was extraordinarily hard work to tote in and “plant” trees, shrubs, blooming flowers and even green turf for the three-day event, but they wowed the crowds and took top prizes many times.

Growing alongside all the green things were their three children, all of whom branched out from their parents’ roots of entrepreneurship. Son Billy became a hospitable restaurant and music venue owner in downtown Fort

Smith and was a leader in establishing riverfront music festivals. After college, Joey became manager of the nursery. But following his brother’s death in 2018, he stepped in to run Neumeier’s Rib Room and Papa’s Pub & Pizzaria, while continuing to work at the nursery. He currently plans to open a third restaurant called Whippoorwill, also downtown.

Their youngest, Lisa Bobel Hearn, worked at the nursery until opening L Designs, a floral business, and the venue The Barn by Two Brothers. The Neumeiers also claim a bonus son to whom they became guardians, Chris Cochran, who worked many hours in the nursery, as well.

Four grown grandchildren and two great-grandchildren have been given garden experience and instilled with their grandparents’ work ethic – and love.

The couple also care greatly about their customers, many of whom became friends. It is certain their friendship will continue.

One of the hardest things for them to relinquish in order to retire is their genuine desire to serve their clients, to whom they are so grateful.

“We encourage everyone who might be the recipient of a gift certificate to bring them in and redeem them before the end of July,” Jody said.

Bill has a plan to go fishing with his brother. Taking time for himself has been rare but as he told his dog, Toby, they won’t have to walk down and open the gate early every morning. Jody has heard him tell his little buddy, “We might like to sleep late some days.”

Indian Creek Adventure Falls, gorges and moss-covered boulders add to wonder of hike

S

ometimes you have to get off the beaten trail and follow the path less traveled to experience the natural wonders of Arkansas.

Indian Creek is one of these special areas, and it is definitely off the beaten path. In his book “Buffalo River Hiking Trails,” Arkansas wilderness photographer Tim Ernst referred to it as one of the most scenic spots in the state.

When a group of hiking friends invited me to join them into Indian Creek, I was there. They planned to hike the drainage from top-down rather than the customary, lower-end start at Kyles Landing Campground. Descending the drainage would be a new experience for me.

This is a very strenuous and challenging hike, regardless of the direction you start. It is best to leave shuttle vehicles at both ends to avoid having to complete an out-and-back hike.

After dropping several vehicles at Kyles Landing, we drove west on Arkansas 74 to park the remaining vehicles at the entrance to Horseshoe Canyon Ranch. Our group of 16 hikers then crossed the highway to begin our Indian Creek Adventure.

Soon, we were tramping down the steep hillside of the Indian Creek watershed, now within the protected forest of the Buffalo National River.

There is no official trail. At times, you may see remnants of social trails 10

from previous hikers. Each year, however, with the lush green undergrowth of spring, Mother Nature attempts to reclaim her home.

When these paths become difficult to follow, continue working your way down the mountain until you reach a waterway. Then, let the gravity-fed stream be your guide.

The previous days’ heavy rains had filled the numerous tributaries to their banks. Water splashing over boulder-strewn creek beds created a peaceful ambiance within the forest.

We did not have to wait long to bag the first of many natural wonders on our outing, Hammerschmidt Falls, named for former U.S. Rep. John Paul Hammerschmidt of Harrison, who helped pass legislation creating the national river.

Hammerschmidt Falls was flowing in all its glory. Water poured over the ledge in a 43-foot freefall, before exploding against the jagged heap of rocks below.

Onward our adventurous troop marched. We scrambled across the hillside to be gifted with spectacular views into the deep water-cut gorges below. On other occasions, we rock hopped within the drainage to experience an up-close and personal connection with the tributary. Ever downward went out procession, as does the water itself, following the route of least resistance.

Our journey continued with more waterfalls, cascades and endless, beautiful moss-covered boulders, until reaching a massive impasse, blocking passage for both water and hiker. What appeared to be a giant impenetrable mountain of rock, stood in our way.

A closer investigation revealed an opening in the mountain. A tall narrow breach, some 30 feet tall and 12 feet wide, cut through solid rock.

The legendary Eye of the Needle.

Known by many hikers but visited by few due to the demanding and often dangerous challenges of reaching it, the Park Service says more injuries happen within this canyon than in any other place in the park.

Only experienced hikers should attempt this bushwhack outing.

What makes this feature unique is the cut does not result in an openended canyon. The fissure remains connected at its top, as in the head of a sewing needle where thread passes.

During periods following extreme rainfall, water from the approaching waterway flows through the eye itself. These are rare occasions. On our hike, water from the stream we had been following disappeared at the base of the formation, continuing its journey underground. This was not an option for us. Our only alternative was up.

With the aid of ropes we packed, we were able to scramble up and over the steep hillside to the eye's right. Once on the backside, our vantage

below the opening offered a better perspective of the formation – one that exposed the entire opening.

We continued, crawling through a short tunnel, inching our way across narrow ledges and repelling a steep slope to arrive at the next natural wonder – Arkansas Cave.

A cavity bore through solid rock has a waterfall spewing from the opening into the stream some 31 feet below. As if that isn’t impressive enough, when viewed from within the cave, the opening is in the shape of the state of Arkansas. Thus, the name.

On my first hike into Indian Creek, we entered the cave but it has since been closed due to the white-nose bat syndrome.

Onward we trekked, now across relatively easier terrain. We checked off the many natural wonders for which Indian Creek is known: Copperhead Falls, Devil’s Bathtub, Butt Crack Fracture, and with the recent rainfall, several unnamed volunteer falls, trickling over the canyon’s edge.

It was a beautiful outing. Although difficult and technical on occasion, the rewards of following a path less traveled outweighed the challenges.

Several members of our troop capped off the outing by treating themselves to a well-deserved feast prepared by Chef Nick Bottini at Low Gap Café. A fitting end to another great adventure in the Natural State.

Corner House Special: Reliving local culinary history with Linda Mankin and Tom Wing

any times, as a student at Northside High School, my friends and I walked a few blocks to the corner of Greenwood Road and Park Avenue. Right next to Vivian's Bookstore, an icon in its own right, was the Corner House, the object of our affection and end to our midday hunger.

For a high school kid trying to keep gas in the car and have little money left over for the weekend, a "Corner House Special" – ham and turkey on (grilled, my preference) Van Hatten's bread, with house-made, secret recipe, blue cheese dressing, a pickle wedge and chips – was perfect.

The previous owner, Charles Cowan, ran the Fort Smith lunch spot with his daughter and a few devoted workers. Linda Mankin approached Cowan in early 1985 to buy it. She was interested in a business she could run while her kids were in school. He initially turned Linda down, but later that year, agreed to sell.

Linda took over a business with a cult following. In addition to Northside students like me, who kept the Corner House in a rotation with Señor Bob's Taco Hut, Homer and Martha's and Porta's on Rogers, other regular patrons included a group of doctors’ wives and clergy. Teachers ordered lunch to go and visited en masse the week before school started. ABF employees, just a few blocks away in those days, ordered lunch and often bought up all the strawberry pie. One of Linda's cooks remarked, "If the phone was ringing at 10 a.m., it was going to be a busy day."

Linda remembers one elderly customer who always sat at the same table. When they'd ask if he wanted his usual order, he'd say yes and then promptly fall asleep in his chair, always waking sometime after his food had arrived. Offering "good food in a comfortable atmosphere" was important to Linda. She remembers several other elderly customers who ate alone at the Corner House. They trusted the staff, even though they didn't feel at ease eating alone at other places. Relationships were built, good food served and a comfortable atmosphere was maintained for 15 successful years.

Linda diversified the original menu, trying a few things and adopting items that became fan favorites. The menu had daily specials. Monday was apple pie, Tuesday was cake day, with Linda adding carrot cake to the already popular chocolate marble and Italian cream.

Wednesday was lemon pie, with Thursday's feature being Stromboli. Strawberry pie was a seasonal offering, while vegetable beef soup, Reuben sandwiches, chef salads, coconut pie and warm German potato salad were staples.

House-made poppyseed dressing was another favorite. Van Hatten's Bakery, in the neighborhood, supplied the bread, baked fresh daily. It is hard to explain what that bread was like compared to what's available today. It was yet another secret to the Corner House success.

If you're like me, you may wish for a Corner House Special, some German potato salad and dessert, served with love and care in a comfortable setting, and lament the café's closing in 2000. I'm happy to say we're in luck!

A partnership with Arts on Main in Van Buren will bring the Corner House back to life on June 27. Linda will conduct a cooking class in the new art center’s culinary classroom, sharing some of the Corner House's most popular dishes, and I will be sharing the history and memories of this cherished lunch spot.

With admission to the class, attendees will be treated to a full lunch with dessert and the recipe for the blue cheese dressing. This is the first in a series of cooking programs led by Linda that will cover other local eateries of yesteryear and also feature some heirloom cookbooks.

Mayor’s 4th of July celebration continues traditional riverfront fun The best seats in town on Independence Day are in Harry E. Kelley Riverpark for the annual Fort Smith Mayor’s 4th of July celebration.

The evening includes all kinds of musical entertainment, including a live set by country artist RaeLynn and the River Valley Community Band as the fireworks burst in mid-air over the Arkansas River.

This year, a fun children’s area will have some vendors on the ground nearby to help families make easy access to refreshments while keeping the kids happy. Other food trucks will be open on the street-level parking lot as usual.

Parking will be free in downtown municipal parking lots and revelers may catch a city transit shuttle down to the riverfront.

Admission to the park to enjoy the fireworks and music is free. Mayor George McGill will emcee with other local hosts and guests.

7 Steps to the Perfect Foil Pouch A 12-inch square piece of foil is a good starting point, but you may need to adjust depending on the recipe.

Remember you'll need plenty of extra room around the ingredients for the heat to build up and cook the contents to perfection.

GOCHUJANG-GLAZED CHICKEN 4 tbsp. Roasted Garlic Seasoned Rice Vinegar 2 tsp. gochujang (chile bean paste) 6 tbsp. maple syrup 4 tsp. soy sauce 2 tbsp., plus 2 tsp. olive oil 4 tsp. Dijon mustard 1/2 tsp. salt

1/2 tsp. pepper 8 chicken thighs 4 cups fresh cauliflower, riced (use grater or food processer so cauliflower resembles rice) 11⁄2 cups fresh scallions, sliced 2 cups fresh sugar snap peas 3 sprigs fresh cilantro, for garnish

Heat oven or grill to 375 degrees.

In large bowl, mix together vinegar, gochujang, maple syrup, soy sauce, olive oil, mustard, salt and pepper to form marinade.

Dip chicken in marinade and toss lightly until coated.

Lightly oil foil pouch and layer base of pouch with cauliflower. Add scallions and sugar snap peas then place chicken on top.

Carefully pour remaining marinade over pouch contents (ensuring that liquid stays inside foil).

Seal foil packet and bake or grill 30 minutes. Open foil to create 2-inch long vent

then bake or grill another 15 minutes, or until completely cooked. Garnish with cilantro before serving.

Chef's tip: For best results and added flavor, marinate chicken 30 minutes before preparing pouches.

Substitutions: In place of gochujang, red pepper flake paste can be made by mixing 1 tablespoon red pepper flakes with a few dashes soy sauce and 1 dash sugar.

Alternatively, substitute 2 teaspoons sriracha for gochujang.

Use heavy-duty foil to avoid tears or poor seals that can spill ingredients and precious seasonings and juices.

Spread foil on a flat surface and add a light nonstick spray, if needed.

Place ingredients and seasonings in the center of the foil.

Bring long sides of the foil together over the food. Pinch together and make 1/2-inch folds straight across at least twice for a strong seal. Leave plenty of open space between the foil and food.

Make 1/2-inch folds on each short end, folding toward food but leaving at least 11⁄2-2 inches between the seam and food.

Handle pouch with care to avoid piercing or tearing, and always use tongs to remove pouches from heat.

WHAT’S COOKING BARTLETT PEAR & OAT CRISP 4 cups fresh pears, medium diced 4 tbsp. mango-seasoned rice vinegar 3/4 cup quick oats 2/3 cup brown sugar 1/2 cup, plus 2 teaspoons, all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon cinnamon 6 tbsp. butter, diced into 1/4-inch squares Heat oven to 375 degrees. Toss pears in rice vinegar and set into lightly greased foil pouch.

Combine remaining ingredients in bowl and use two forks to combine ingredients until mixture becomes crumbly.

Pour mixture evenly over pears, seal pouch and bake 20 minutes.

Open top of foil and bake another 10 minutes, or until crisp and golden.

Chef's tips: For crispier crust, refrigerate crumbly mixture 30 minutes before baking.

Serve with scoop of vanilla bean ice cream.

MEDITERRANEAN VEGETABLES 3 tbsp. seasoned rice vinegar 1/4 cup olive oil 1 tsp. salt, plus extra, to taste 1/2 tsp. pepper, plus extra, to taste 1 tbsp., plus 11⁄2 teaspoons, fresh parsley, chopped 11⁄2 tsp. fresh garlic, minced 1 cup fresh zucchini, sliced into 13⁄4-inch long, 1/4-inch thick planks 1cup fresh green pepper strips 1 cup fresh red pepper strips 8 fresh stalks asparagus, slicing off 1/4-inch from bottom of stalk 1 fresh portobello mushroom, sliced into 1/2-inch squares 1 cup fresh eggplant, diced into 1/2-inch squares Heat oven or grill to 375 degrees.

In large bowl, mix together rice vinegar, olive oil, salt, pepper, parsley and garlic to create marinade.

Clean vegetables then place them in marinade in small batches. Toss to coat and place in foil pouch. Pour remaining marinade over vegetables and seal pouch.

Bake in oven or over indirect heat on grill 25 minutes. Add salt and pepper, to taste, after removing pouch from heat.

Chef's tip: Open pouch after 20 minutes of cooking and allow vegetables to crisp slightly under direct heat for remaining 5 minutes.

The Fishin’ Magician at Crawford County Library Reading Program Kick-Offs To celebrate the “Oceans of Fun” theme of this year’s Summer Reading Program, the Crawford County Libraries will host several performances by the Fishin’ Magicians, Steve Craig and Amy Short.

This married couple from Southwest Missouri love nature, performing for kids and educating everyone about catch-and-release fishing and native wildlife, from plants to butterflies. They also enjoy canoeing, hiking, backpacking, camping, observing wildlife, learning natural history and photographing nature. And ... magic! 13-17 UAFS Band Camp A one-week music camp in which middle school, junior high and high school students will be immersed in an exciting music making experience. The camp is open to students grades 6-12 who play flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, saxophone, horn, trumpet, trombone, euphonium/ baritone, tuba and percussion. Students will perform in either the wind symphony 9-12th grade, or the symphonic band 6-8th grade. Under the direction of Dr. Alexandra Zacharella, Director of Bands, joined by a music faculty of nationally and internationally recognized performers and teachers. Evening activities throughout the week including bowling night and movie night. This is a day camp only; no residential camp option. 9 a.m.-3 p.m. daily with a final concert at 6 p.m.

Take a stagecoach ride through history JUNE

Each Thursday in June, kids and adults are invited to the Fort Smith Museum of History’s reading program, Stories and Stagecoaches. Each week, a book highlighting the role of stagecoaches in American history will be read aloud.

Everyone will hear thrilling historical stories of pioneer women drivers ‘Stagecoach Sal’ and ‘Fearless Mary.’ Other lessons focus on Fort Smith’s role in the development of the Butterfield Stagecoach Trail.

Fort Smith is again the beneficiary of a Mortimer & Mimi Levitt Foundation grant that supports free, family concerts on the riverfront, with a diverse slate of music. The 6 p.m. concerts are presented locally with 64.6 Downtown and the City of Fort Smith.

The lineup includes music in the genres of rock, jazz, R&B, Neo soul, folk, blues, Americana and a combo of bluegrass with hip hop. The artists are both local and nationally touring groups.

In its 31st year, the enduring Riverfront Blues Festival returns to keep on keeping the blues alive.

This summer’s festival will be held in downtown music venues, with the Majestic as its main stage.

A trio of headliners start with Robert Kimbrough Sr., son of the legendary North Mississippi juke joint proprietor Junior Kimbrough, who continues the Cotton Patch Soul Blues style created by his father, the legendary Junior Kimbrough. From an early age, Robert was steeped in the sounds and life of North Mississippi and its distinctive style of blues. Growing up, Robert listened, first-hand to Mississippi blues royalty that played with his father at home, at Junior’s Juke Joint Club, and the ever frequent weekend house party and porch jam session. The blues was simply part of everyday life as a Kimbrough. Robert continues his father’s musical tradition, along with some of his siblings.

You can often find many of them sharing the stage on any given night in Mississippi. The Kimbrough name, along with the Burnside name, is part of a blues dynasty that remains strong today, bringing people from all over the world to see and hear them play.

It is a deep soul sound that can be linked back to his ancestors coming from the cotton fields, singing and “hollering” as they worked in the tall rows of Mississippi cotton. This distinct and somewhat underground style of blues is rooted in hypnotic rhythms and dance-able grooves. The Black Keys released an entire album called Chulahoma: The Songs of Junior Kimbrough.

Up until the mid ’80s, the only way to hear this music was to visit a church-turned-blues-den founded by Junior Kimbrough in Chulahoma, Miss., that unfortunately burned down in 2000. But the sound lives on and on. Catch Kimbrough’s sets to hear why it is unstoppable.

The rest of the roster is just as deep, including the Lucious Spiller Band, Larry McCray and the joyful James “Super Chickan” Johnson.

Bass Reeves Historical Roundtable and Murder Trial hosted by FSMH JUNE

Lawman Bass Reeves is examined two ways in Fort Smith Museum of History events – by a historians’ panel discussion and a historical trial re-enactment.

Both address the 1887 trial in which Reeves was tried for murder.

An 11 a.m., Historical Roundtable will be a live panel discussion among scholars of the former slave turned exemplary deputy U.S. Marshal. Speakers are Oscar and Shiron Ray from 3-Rivers Museum in Muskogee, also both professors at Bacone College of Muskogee, as well as Tom Wing, University of Arkansas-Fort Smith professor of history, and Dave Kennedy, curator of collections and exhibits at U.S. Marshals Museum.

At 6 p.m., the 1887 trial of Reeves will be presented from the historical trial transcript. In an 1884 foray into the Indian Territory, Reeves and a posse including William Leach were camped in the Chickasaw Nation, escorting nine prisoners. Reeves had argued with Leach over a stray dog that Leach had allowed in the camp. While Reeves was trying to clear a jammed cartridge in his Winchester, the rifle went off and struck Leach in the neck.

Reeves rendered first aid and sent for a doctor. When no doctor was found, Reeves broke camp and took the wounded man to Dr. Nat Cochran’s place. He instructed the doctor to care for Leach and send him the bill. Reeves took his prisoners on to Fort Smith. A few months passed and word was send of Leach’s death. Was it murder or an accidental shooting, as Reeves claimed?

The audience will be asked to render a verdict after hearing testimony from witnesses and Reeves himself. Then the actual verdict will be revealed. Celebrate 50 free-flowing years on Arkansas’ protected natural river In 2022, Buffalo National River celebrates its 50th anniversary as a unit of the National Park Service.

Starting in the 1960s, with plans under way to construct two hydroelectric dams on the Buffalo River in the Ozarks, the fate of the river and its surrounding communities was put in the national spotlight. A contentious battle emerged among various interest groups. Dam proponents argued for economic growth, flood control and power generation to the area. Opponents fought to preserve the scenic, recreational and scientific value of one of the few remaining free-flowing rivers in the lower 48 states through a proposal to add the Buffalo to the national park system.

After years of political push and pull, on March 1, 1972, the Buffalo River earned the designation of “national river” – the first of its kind in the national park system. Some of the heroes of the cause were Sen. J. William Fulbright of Fayetteville and Dr. Neil Compton of Bentonville, along with Arkansas conservationist Evangeline Pratt Archer, a founding member of The Ozark Society.

Millions of visitors and tourism dollars later, it seems clear these natural preservationists were right to save the Buffalo in its natural glory. Countless visitors, local and international, have been drawn to float the river in canoes and kayaks, adventurously in the spring currents and as lazily as they please in summer’s lower water flow. Camping, fishing, cycling, climbing, hiking and photography are other popular activities in the Buffalo River region.
