As is this magazine’s tradition, we have produced another “Kids Issue” with the intent of creating a comprehensive guide to an active, enjoyable summer. As is my own tradition, if you say “there’s nothing to do,” I threaten to roll up a magazine and swat you with it. OK, that was violent. Imagine me shaking it sternly in your general direction, instead. There is so much going on! And so much of it is free, very accessible and welcoming to all. Praise to all our public libraries, youth clubs, our Nature Center, our parks, local art museums and centers and many others for contriving so, so much for families or children to enjoy. Young people can learn to fish or fly a drone. There is enough variety available for any child to try to take on something new. Some 22 years ago when we dreamed up this magazine, one type of imaginary reader we had in mind to serve was a young parent with a small budget and children to entertain. Several of us, back then, were in that exact situation with our kids. We thought we might have to share all of our secrets about what do with a bored kid – for free. Donna Payne, my colleague then and still, piped in with taking them to see the very long and colorful Van Buren mural (on the riverfront). She also came up with “Flat Stanley” – a new one on me. Pretty cool but really, snail mail? Today? Back then, there were a pair of swans in a small, little-noticed pond near ABF on Old Greenwood Road, an easy 20-minute activity.
My daughters liked to feed the enormous carp from the docks in Van Buren. Mom could dig around for enough coins in the seat of the car to buy the fish pellets. Cheap and fairly easy? Check. We’d like to know the secret strategies of today’s parents – readers? Write me, my email address is at the left! We also considering inventing a symbol that only parents could read. It would indicate whether a place or event had merchandise or concessions – or not. There’s nothing like showing up without enough cash to buy an (possibly overpriced) ice cream, corn dog or new, irresistible product marketed directly to kids’ lizard brains. Maybe we still need to do that, but kids are awful smart these days. I don’t know if we could fool them when even toddlers use smartphones and iPads with frightening proficiency. There were also plenty of organized events way, way back at the Turn of the Millenium. We learned we would not have to invent them – we could gather them. Actually, we urged everyone to report them to us online. And, now you do. Thank you to the patient typists who sent most of these schedules and events to us. Bless your hearts and tired fingers. After dealing with all of them, we have tired fingers, too. Next month’s issue also will have even more stuff for kids and families to do. But if you hang onto this issue and start now, you can plan your way to a great summer that starts the instant the school bell rings on the last day of school. Have fun! – Lynn Wasson

city TRAiLS Ben Geren Trail This trail is maintained by Sebastian County. Begins at Zero Street Trail near Massard Creek. It extends south along Massard Creek intersecting Planters Road Trail and connecting to Landfill Loop, and ends at Massard Road South Trail and Fort Chaffee West Trail. This trail contains 1.8 miles of existing paved trail. Chad Colley Trail Chad Colley Boulevard Trail follows the new section of the road from the south end of Massard Road to the Steep Hill Road and Rye Hill Road east intersection near Riley Farm subdivision. This trail is 1.75 miles long. Chaffee Crossing Trail System This is a joint project with the Fort Chaffee Redevelopment Authority for the construction of an approximate 7.1-mile trail system.

Greg Smith River Trail A multi-use trail in between the Arkansas River and Riverfront Drive. It extends approximately 6.3 miles and is lighted. The trail begins at the River Park Events Building and ties into Fort Smith Park. Art installations, a bridge and river views are features. Massard Road Trail Begins at Jackson Street near Phoenix Avenue and the bikeway on Massard and extends south to Zero Street Trail and Massard Road South Trail. This trail contains 1.4 miles of paved trail. This trail is at the east end of airport property and passes by the former Fort Smith Dog Park. Continue south on Massard on the extra wide sidewalk on the east side of the road and join the Chad Colley Walking Trail at the southern most end of Massard Road. The Ben Geren Trail also intersects this section of Massard Road.
Mill Creek Trail Approximately 0.6 miles of gravel trail runs along a portion of Mill Creek. Begins off Jenny Lind Road behind Sutherlands and extends northwest along the creek connecting into Phoenix near Jack’s Skateland. Ronnie Udouj Walking Trail This trail is maintained by the Utilities Department. It is approximately 1.5 miles and there are multiple trail spurs that allow users to shorten the path. A portion of the trail is paved, while the rest is gravel. It features a pedestrian bridge that crosses over the Sunnymede Creek. City parks such as Creekmore and Carol Ann Cross Park also have walking trails. To learn more before you go: Trail maps, photos and updates can be found online at parks.fortsmithar.gov.

Riverside Rides offers bikes for rent and real business experience for students With more welcoming outdoor conditions and a call to connect with nature, people may be searching for fun activities to enjoy with family and friends. A great place to go is Riverside Rides. Located on the riverfront at 417 Riverfront Drive, decorated by eye-catching murals and an oil rig, Riverside Rides is a bike rental service run by the students of the Future School of Fort Smith. Riverside Rides began in 2020 when Griffin Hanna and Phil White coordinated with the Future School to develop a bike rental/entrepreneurship project for high school students. That summer, Riverside Rides opened to the public. The student-run bike rental is now open 8 a.m.-1 p.m. and 3-8 p.m. May-November with two students working at a time. Options for bike rentals include tandem bikes and children's bikes. All bikes are $12 for an hour of riding and $20 an hour for special bikes. Riverside Rides has been described as a great experience and family destination, with many upcoming community events. Logan Whitaker, a student at the Future School, said he believes the bike rental is just a small part of supporting the local community and it is integral to Riverside Rides and everyone it serves. – Guest writer Aiden Armer is a sophomore attending Future School

Students will then create individual art designs with their robots. Taking what they've learned with their robots, students will create a large collaborative art piece. July 26 Values Look at some of Brian Clarke’s stained glass windows as inspiration. Explore how different colors can look based on light. July 28 Shapes Create geometric abstract works by laying overlapping shapes down and painting within them to create all kinds of new shapes.
June 15 Where the Sidewalk Ends Listen to selected poems from Shel Silverstein’s “Where the Sidewalk Ends” and create landscapes inspired by Peter Max. June 20 One Fish, Two Fish Hear “One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish” and create an aquarium of fish. June 22 Oh, The Places You'll Go! This camp is open to students who are currently in grades 1-9. Student enrollment is based on principal recommendation. To be eligible, students must be scoring below the 25th percentile on ACT Aspire or be at a Level 1 or 2 in overall reading on IStation. Register through principal’s office of your own school. June 6-16 and Aug. 29-Sept. 9 PSAT Academy PSAT Academy is designed to enable students to maximize their scores on the ACT. The academy will emphasize strategies, methods, content review and the application of content and skills. Students will learn strategies and methods for timed test-taking as well as for math, reading, grammar, science and the ACT essay. Students with the 25 top PSAT scores from both Northside High School and Southside High School will be accepted. Register through principal’s office of your own school. June 6-10 Nuts, Bolts and Thingamajigs Students entering seventh or eighth grade can experience modern manufacturing by creating, building and taking a product home. Campers tour manufacturing facilities, learn about entrepreneurship and meet top industry experts. They will experience a safe, hands-on learning environment. Students will create products using Computer Aided Design (CAD). They may operate machinery under close supervision and discover a future career in manufacturing. Camp is open to 20 FSPS students. June 7-9 Full STEAM Ahead Camp Students will engage in STEAM activities that require them to design projects that will Build a Community of the Future. Topics include: Health/Safety/Security: Students will create a safe playground for children of all abilities using concepts of force and motion. Environmental Impact: Investigate how plants and animals, including humans, impact the environment. Communication/Entertainment: Students will create a golf course of the future using concepts of force and motion and visualizing the future of entertainment using robots. Energy/Transportation: Students create multiple rescue scenarios based on a variety of natural disasters (hurricane, earthquakes, floods, etc.) They will create rescue plans utilizing current technologies such as Spheros, drones and green screens to report their progress. Simple recipes to create with kids for kids WHAT’S COOKING
FRUITY PUFFS Cooking spray 1 whole egg plus 1 egg white 1/3 cup lowfat milk 1 tablespoon canola oil 1/4 cup whole wheat flour 1/4 teaspoon salt 2 cups assorted fruit, chopped 2 tablespoons maple syrup or fruit preserve Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Coat a muffin tin with cooking spray, set aside. In a bowl, beat together eggs, milk and oil. Add flour and salt, beat until smooth. Divide batter among muffin tin, to make 4 servings. Bake for 25 minutes or until brown and puffy. Turn oven off and let stand in oven for 5 minutes. Remove puffs from muffin tin. Place on plates, spoon fruit into center, and drizzle with maple syrup or fruit preserve.
SKILLET LASAGNA 1 cup ricotta cheese 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese, grated 11⁄2 cups mozzarella cheese, shredded and divided 1 pound ground turkey 1 zucchini, diced 1 (26-ounce) jar pasta sauce 6 no-boil lasagna noodles, preferably whole wheat In a medium bowl, mix together ricotta, Parmesan and 1/2 cup mozzarella. Set aside. In a skillet over medium-high heat, brown the turkey until it is no longer pink, breaking up any clumps. Drain excess fat. Add zucchini and half the pasta sauce. Reduce heat. Top mixture with 4 lasagna noodles, breaking noodles to fit the pan. Spread cheese mixture over noodles. Place 2 noodles over cheese and pour remaining pasta sauce spreading evenly. Sprinkle with rest of mozzarella. Cover skillet and simmer over medium-low heat until noodles are tender, about 20 minutes. 34

FROZEN BANANAS 4 bananas, peeled and cut into thirds 12 popsicle sticks 1 (12-ounce) bag semi-sweet chocolate chips 2 cups cereal of choice Line a baking sheet with wax paper. Insert sticks into banana pieces. Place on baking sheet and freeze for 1 hour. Microwave chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl on low for 2 minutes, stirring after 1 minute. Continue until chocolate has melted. Dip frozen bananas in chocolate and roll over cereal. Return bananas to baking sheet and freeze until frozen solid.

CHICKEN FINGERS Cooking spray 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts 11⁄2 cups plain bread crumbs 1 teaspoon ground cumin 2 teaspoons chili powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1/2 cup whole wheat flour 2 eggs, beaten Preheat oven 375 degrees. Coat baking sheet with cooking spray, set aside. Cut chicken into strips. In a small bowl, stir together bread crumbs, cumin, chili powder, salt, oregano and cayenne pepper. Transfer to a shallow dish. Dredge chicken strips in flour, shake off excess. Dip in egg and then coat with bread crumb mixture. Place on baking sheet. Bake for 30 minutes or until cooked through and golden brown. 36

Levitt AMP Music Series presents free Thursday concerts Thursdays are for enjoying free summer music. Fort Smith is again the beneficiary of a Mortimer & Mimi Levitt Foundation grant that supports free, family concerts on the riverfront, with a diverse slate of music. The 6 p.m. concerts are presented locally with 64.6 Downtown and the City of Fort Smith. The lineup includes music in the genres of rock, Norteño, jazz, R&B, Neo soul, folk, blues, Americana and a unique combo of bluegrass with hip hop. The artists are both local and nationally touring groups. Take lawn chairs and picnic baskets to the outdoor concerts at the Riverfront Amphitheatre, 121 Riverfront Drive. Century Celebration of the Million Dollar Free Bridge A partnership between the Fort Smith Museum of History, Fort Smith Historical Society and Fort Smith National Historic Site brings a 100th anniversary commemorative celebration of the 1922 “Million Dollar Free Bridge” to the historic Frisco Station. Special guest Mayor George McGill speaks with the 1922 Fort Smith mayor, Fagan Bourland, portrayed by reenactor Matt Hutchinson, and the 1922 Queen Louise Golden, portrayed by Susie Brooks. Over the two-day period of May 11-12, 1922, the largest celebration in Fort Smith history occurred in recognition of the opening and dedication of the Garrison Avenue “Million Dollar” Free Bridge. Governors of Arkansas and Oklahoma were present for the christening and dedication of the bridge and a flight of eight Army biplanes performed maneuvers overhead. More than 20,000 people were present in the city to observe and participate in the twoday long celebration culminating years of back-breaking labor, legal battles and cooperation between states in the creation of the iconic bridge. At 1:30 p.m., hear History of the Frisco Building by Chuck Girard. Other events follow from a parade of Fort Smith Antique Automobile Club vintage vehicles, remarks by Mayor George McGill, history of the construction by Al Whitson and remarks by “Mayor Bourland” and “Queen Louise Golden.” Final program is by a Fort Smith National Park Service ranger. Images and photos from the archives of the Museum of History and the Historical Society of the 1922 Million Dollar Free Bridge will be displayed with original concept drawings of the 1922 Bridge loaned by Carder Furgeson. Fort Smith Regional Art Museum will display prints of John Bell, Jr. depicting the 1922 Million Dollar Free Bridge.
