Who: All ages What: A Universe of Stories When: June 1-July 31 This year’s theme is A Universe of Stories. Stop by any Fort Smith Public Library location to enjoy books, movies, computers, magazines, music, and special library programs of all kinds this summer. For teens, any item you check out (books, CD, DVD, eBooks, audiobooks, magazines, digital titles, etc.), enables you to receive scratch-off tickets with chances to win instant prizes and candy, or entries into weekly gift card drawings. A grand prize drawing will be held at the end of the program for a $50 gift card. The summer reading program for younger children is designed to encourage reading for pleasure; it will help young people who are able to read independently retain the valuable reading skills they developed over this past school year. Preschool children too young to read may also participate and will receive credit for the books read to them. Younger children can earn reading awards, such as book bags, food coupons, small prizes, and Creekmore Park activity passes, for every five hours they read (independent readers) or every five books they listen to (prereaders). Independent readers who read 25 (or more!) hours will be able to select a library book to have dedicated in their name. Children of all ages will be eligible to win one of several grand prizes at the end of the program. Registration begins June 1 at all four Fort Smith Public Library locations.

KIDS calendar of events 6th Annual Duck Day in May and Family Festival MAY

STEPS Family Resource Center will hold its 6th Annual Duck Derby and Family Festival and its first Quack, Waddle and Run 5K and 1-mile Fun Run. May is Foster Care Awareness month. Proceeds support the mission of STEPS to serve families and children who are involved in the foster care system.

Duck Day begins with a timed and chipped 5K and a 1-mile fun run with an 8 a.m. start. The Family Festival begins at 10 a.m. and includes free games and entertainment for all ages. At noon, hundreds of rubber duckies will splash intro the Lazy River at Parrot Island to race for big prize packages. Each duck will be numbered to identify the winning owner. A $5 racing-duck adoption fee is an opportunity to win prize packages – and keep the ducky! It’s not only the duckies who will swim – Parrot Island will open for swimming from 1-5 p.m. Swim is $10 for guests over 48 inches, $5 under 48 inches.There is a $5 special rate for foster families who check in with proof of foster family status.

Chicken is versatile for easy meals WARM TUSCAN CHICKEN SANDWICHES Serve 4 1 pound pre-cooked chicken, sliced 2 teaspoons fresh rosemary, minced 2 teaspoons fresh basil, minced 1 clove garlic, minced 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 loaf crusty baguette, split lengthwise and soft insides removed 2 tablespoons olive oil 1/3 pound sliced Provolone cheese 8 sundried tomatoes in oil, drained, cut into strips

Serve four with these easy to assemble sandwiches worthy of a gourmet bistro. Pre-cooked chicken breasts are the timesaver: a really good bread and good Provolone are key elements.

Preheat oven 350 degrees F. Combine rosemary, basil, garlic, salt and pepper and set aside. Brush inside of baguette halves with olive oil. Sprinkle evenly with herb mixture.

Place sliced chicken, Provolone and sundried tomato strips evenly on one baguette half. Put other half of baguette on top, press down

slightly and tie the baguette, at 2-inch intervals, with kitchen string, if desired.

Put baguette on a baking sheet and into the hot oven. Bake until warmed through and cheese is melted, about 10 to 12 minutes.

Remove from oven and let rest for 5 minutes. Remove strings and cut into quarter before serving.

Drain but do not rinse.

While linguini cooks, season chicken slices with salt and pepper. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium high heat. Add chicken slices and

To same pan, add pancetta and sauté for 2-3 minutes or until browned. Remove from pan and reserve. Add broth to pan, raise heat to high and bring to a boil. Reduce for 2-3 minutes. Add corn, tomato, and chicken to pan, reduce heat to low and heat through for one minute. Cover and remove from heat until pasta is finished cooking.

Pour cooked pasta into chicken mixture. Toss until well combined. Place in serving bowl, sprinkle with reserved pancetta, and serve garnished with basil sprigs.

OVEN-FRIED BUTTERMILK CHICKEN DRUMSTICKS Serves 4 8 chicken drumsticks 2 TBLS spicy red seasoning 1 bay leaf 1 tsp hot sauce 1 quart buttermilk 1 cup all-purpose flour ¼ tsp salt 1 tsp freshly ground black pepper 2 TBLS butter In a lidded plastic container large enough to hold the drumsticks, combine the seasoning, bay leaf, hot sauce and butter. Stir well. Add chicken, turning to coat, cover with lid and refrigerate for several hours or overnight.

When ready to cook chicken, preheat oven to 400 F. Remove chicken from refrigerator. Drain chicken in colander (do not rinse); pat dry with paper towels. Place flour, salt and pepper in plastic, sealable one-gallon size bag. Add chicken drumsticks in batches and shake bag thoroughly to coat.

Put butter in roasting pan and place in hot oven. When butter is melted and pan is hot, add chicken, skin side down, to pan. Place chicken in oven and cook for 20 minutes. Lower oven temperature to 350 F, turn drumsticks and cook another 20 minutes until cooked through. Remove cooked drumsticks to a paper towel-lined plate to drain.

May 9-10 Unexpected/Bentonville Film Festival in Fort Smith Bentonville Film Festival will expand to Fort Smith this year in partnership with The Unexpected. Fort Smith songwriter honored for lifetime achievement In a ceremony June 3, the Arkansas Country Music Awards will bestow recognition to songwriter Kye Fleming along with natives Conway Twitty, Patsy Montana, The Wilburn Brothers and Jimmy Driftwood as the 2019 recipients of their Lifetime Achievement Award. Fleming is a graduate of Northside High School.

“All five have left a huge mark in country music and have made Arkansas proud," said longtime country music journalist Charles Haymes.

"From a giant country star to a Western cowgirl to a popular sibling duo to a top-notch hit songwriter to one of the greatest folk/country storytellers, this is an incredible mix of Arkansans.”

Fleming grew up here and attended the University of Arkansas. In Nashville during the late 1970s and early ’80s, she teamed with Dennis Morgan. They co-wrote Barbara Mandrell's "I Was Country (When Country Wasn't Cool)," "Crackers" and "Sleeping Single in a Double Bed." Ronnie Milsap scored big with their songs "Smokey Mountain Rain" and "I Wouldn't Have Missed It for the World." Sylvia took "Nobody" to the top of country and pop radio. Willie Nelson scored with Fleming's "There You Are." She is a three-time recipient of BMI's Songwriter of the Year and was inducted into the Nashville Songwriter's Hall of Fame in 2009.

“Anyone who knows me knows I prefer being backstage to being onstage.

But this award is very special to me,” said Fleming. “Both sides of my family, Carters and Flemings, were born in and around Fort Smith. I grew up with my aunts and uncles, playing hymns and country music at all the family gatherings. Nashville took me in, but I know that 500 miles of I-40 like the back of my hand on the steering wheel. I know my way home to Arkansas by heart and this award makes me feel like my songs have just come back full circle, too.”

Conway Twitty of Helena made hits with "It's Only Make Believe" to country singles such as "Hello Darlin',” "I'd Love to Lay You Down" and duets with Loretta Lynn. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1999. Patsy Montana, born Ruby Blevins in Beaudry, became a queen of country & western music. “I Want To Be a Cowboy's Sweetheart,” 1935, was the first single by a female country artist to sell a million copies.

She is also in the Country Music Hall of Fame.

Songwriters Kye Fleming and Dennis Morgan with artist Ronnie Milsap, center, whose recordings of a string of their songs were massive hits.

Teddy and Doyle Wilburn of Hardy became popular on the Grand Ole Opry and television with their own syndicated show. Their hits include "Trouble's Back in Town," "It's Another World" and "Roll Muddy River."

Born in Timbo, Jimmy Driftwood is a great composer and interpreter of folk and country songs. In 1959, Johnny Horton hit with Driftwood’s composition “The Battle of New Orleans.” Driftwood wrote more than 6,000 songs, of which more than 300 have been recorded by many artists. He was a key figure in the preservation of old-time music in Mountain View and performed at its Folk Center from its establishment until his death.

All five of the Lifetime Achievement recipients will be honored during the June 3 Arkansas Country Music Awards 2019 red carpet event, with special performances onstage. Tickets, $35-$100, online. 6:30 p.m.

Blues and Peacemaker Festivals name their artists June and July are months the riverfront will rock at Harry Kelly Park with Fort Smith’s oldest and youngest music festivals.

Both festivals grew from the roots of Fort Smith’s fertile music culture and desire to promote the community.

For its June 21-22 Riverfront Blues Festival, organizers have announced a lineup of Tom Ware & Lacey Thomas, the Halfway Crooks and headlines Mr. Sipp “The Mississippi Blues Child,� and John Nemeth, blues and soul harmonica artist.

Several more artists are to be announced.

This is the 29th annual blues festival.

The 5th Annual Peacemaker Music & Art Festival, July 26-27, will present Turnpike Troubadors, Ryan Bingham, the Josh Abbot Band, Lucero, the North Mississippi All-Stars, Samantha Fish, William Clark Green, Dylan Earl and J.D. Clayton.

Dr. William E. Knight Porcelain Gallery Opens at RAM MAY

The Fort Smith Regional Art Museum is opening for permanent display a collection of Boehm porcelain that was the gift of the Dr. and Mrs. William E. Knight. Knight, an orthopedic doctor, was a world traveler and photographer. In 1975 the Knights donated 11 pieces to the Art Center and added 77 pieces in total through the 1990s. Greenwood’s 10th Annual Airing of the Quilts MAY

Greenwood, Ark. celebrates the art of the quilt with a huge quilt show and weekend of hometown activities. The Airing of the Quilts is held at Sen. Second Coke Hill Walk Through History MAY

A walking tour through history: Coke Hill Revisited is brought back this year by the Friends of the Fort. The group will present a walking tour through the part of Fort Smith National Historic Site once known as Coke Hill. Last year’s original tour attracted former residents of the area and created a bit of a reunion. Others were fascinated by of Fort Smith’s most enduring communities and how it was deliberately eradicated by public policy.

Using photos, stories and printed histories, guides will recreate life as it was lived on the piece of land once called the "Choctaw Strip" before the city took the land by eminent domain in the 1950s. Part of the property became the Fort Smith National Historic Site.

Families on the strip lived outside city restrictions and without the expense or benefit of government from the time the first fort at Belle Point was abandoned until the late 1960's. Many attempts were made to remove squatters and destroy their simple homes, but residents resisted and held their position on the river banks for generations. Proper homes and streets grew. $5 donation per adult; or $2 for children 12 to 16. Proceeds will be used to fund programs at the historic site. May 4-24 May Opening Reception: Glass Works The Center For Art and Education will feature an exhibition highlighting the art form of glassblowing and glass-making. In the main gallery, James Hayes creates playful, adventurous and colorful glass works influenced by nature, chance, the fashion world, interior design and his own experiences. After Hayes earned a BFA from Hendrix College, he discovered glassblowing at the Arkansas Arts Center Museum School. He has studied glassblowing in Murano, Italy; Paris, France; the Glass Furnace in Istanbul; Urban Glass Brooklyn, New York; New Town Plaza in Hong Kong; and the Pilchuck Glass School near Seattle, Wash. He owns the James Hayes Art Glass Company in Pine Bluff, Ark. Arkansas artists Elizabeth James and Elisa Cossey display their work in the studio gallery. Cossey has taken glass lessons all over the U.S. and Canada.

May 11 Happy 100th, Locomotive 4003 On National Train Day, the Fort Smith Trolley Museum celebrates the 100th birthday of Locomotive 4003, the museum’s largest exhibit. The steam locomotive has been a landmark in Fort Smith since 1954, when it was installed at Kay Rodgers Park. The freight engine is lighted for Christmas in the spirit of the fictional Polar Express for the Trolley Museum’s annual reading. 4003 is so popular, kids will even turn out to wash the train. An reception May 3 opens this exhibition by the international UK artist and designer. This immersive exhibition brings together a collection of speculative and commissioned works from Williamson’s creative practice over the past 20 years. The works displayed are predominantly editorial, with some design and advertising based work, but equal weight is given to work in progress.

Williamson creates bold graphic artwork using collage and print techniques, working across digital and analogue to generate narrative ideas that explore intersections between graphic form, drawing and the photographic image. He makes work for a clients in the advertising, editorial and publishing fields, including Adobe, Adidas, Virgin Mobile, World Health Organization, The New Yorker, Rolling Stone and others.

Mike Holloway shares his love of color in photography exhibition “Faces of Calichi” Entitled "Faces of Calichi," these spectacular color images were taken on St. John Island in the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Sierra Nevada Mountains and the Canadian Rockies. Caliche is a sedimentary rock or hardened natural cement of calcium carbonate that binds together other JUNE materials. Calichi is also a group of villas on St. John Island. The common thread and connection is photographer Mike Holloway’s love of and impressions of color.

Holloway’s large prints are all on aluminum and 2’ to 5’ wide. He is including works from Canada and images of the total solar eclipse which he flew to Paducah, Ky. to capture. Holloway has carefully chosen from his entire body of photography to share these images with the community. “They are what I saw the way I saw them,” he said.

In the amusingly stern rules of the race: "Vehicles must negotiate a Course which may consist of a number of Hazards, possibly including a Ramp, a Tunnel, a Jump and/or divers Obstacles of a breakable nature.

Vehicles must negotiate the Course as specified by

the Judges, one Vehicle at a time, within the allotted time of two minutes. Points will be deducted for every 10 seconds over the allotted time. Bribes accepted!"

Translated into current language, each vehicle will be a teapot, mounted on the chassis of a miniature, radiocontrolled car. Entry fee $10. The Rodeo Parade JUNE opens the week on Memorial Day, May 27.
