Partners impress us, once again Each year, starting with our very first issue, this magazine looks in on some of Fort Smith’s finest people – those who volunteer for the Partners in Education program of our public school district. And each year, the number of businesses and organizations who help students in so many different ways grows larger.

Every partnership deserves applause and should be written about but those stories would fill a volume many times the size of this issue.

We focus on a few to show, in-depth, what adults are doing to help students.

We spoke with two of them who represent many more – Tim Bailey and George McGill.

Writing those names brings the fictional name “George Bailey” to mind – the character in the uplifting movie “It’s A Wonderful Life” who found out (through movie magic) what a difference his life had made to his hometown.

The work of these two in real life is having an effect even more wonderful than that famous movie character was shown he had created.

I wish we could cinematically project far into the future to learn what the young men they are mentoring now will become, partly due to the support and encouragement they’ve received.

The thing is, the real George and the real Mr. Bailey may never know – and they realize it.

Each of them volunteers anyway in the hope that they can nudge youngsters toward even a small positive outcome, now or years from now.

We are, as always, so grateful for school partners such as these and the many, many others.

Accidentally, as often happens, other stories in this issue turn out to be about people who change life for the better. Buck Cobley helped to create a high school fishing team. The late Greg Smith went at blazing trails with a chainsaw – and chainsaw intensity. Guest writer Claude Legris names off a slate of inventive, bold do-ers who are inventing new cultural opportunities.

Here’s to them! It feels good to know there are more than we can ever be done writing about.

A really good hug says a lot about a person When it comes to communicating how much you truly care about someone, hardly anything can top a good hug.

A straight-from-the-heart hug can say volumes about how happy, proud or sad you feel for someone when you're too emotional to try to say what you're feeling. Almost anyone – regardless of their age or life status – can get your message from the way you hug them.

Take a look at this handsome little guy, our newest grandchild, Keller August Seubold, for instance. He's the newest addition to the Morgan and Mindy Seubold family and inspires my hug and cuddle reflexes every time I see him.

Keller's arrival about a month ago increased the Frank-and-Linda grandchild roster to an even dozen, and our number of grandsons to four. Nils, Remi, Kenton and Keller are still way outnumbered by granddaughters Emma, Maile, Ava, Sarah, Reese, Ellie, Bethany and Brianna. But, so far, all our grandkids ages 23 to 3 still enjoy giving and receiving Mimi and Pa hugs. Frank and I are very thankful for that, and can't wait for Keller to feel that way about us, too.

I found out somebody else likes hugs, too: Academy Awardwinning, movie star, director and, Keller August Seubold most recently, touring musician Kevin Costner. Costner got to enjoy history and hugs when he and his band, Modern West, performed recently at the Choctaw Casino's Center Stage Event Center in Pocola.

Fort Smith restaurateur Ava Milam was one of the lucky recipients of a hug at his concert, as Costner strolled through his capacity audience without bodyguards, pausing often to hug the ladies and shake hands with the guys on his way to take the stage with his band.

“It was the most exciting thing to happen to me in a long time,” Ava said. “He put both arms around me and gave me a big old hug – a very good hug. It got my blood boiling for a little while. I put it on Facebook immediately – 'OMG! Keven Costner just hugged me!'”

Ava said she was also surprised to find that Costner is “ a very good singer ... and his band was awesome.”

Cody Faber, park ranger and volunteer coordinator at the Fort Smith National Historic Site, was also at the concert and impressed

by Costner's solo entrance through his audience.

“He came walking in alone from the back of the room and everyone just automatically stood up and started cheering,” Cody said. “It was almost presidential. All that seemed missing was ‘Hail to the Chief ’ as he walked down the aisle pausing to hug the women and shake hands with the men.”

Cody had met Costner a few hours before the concert when Costner made a surprise request to visit to the Fort National Historic Site about 10 minutes before time for it to close.

Costner and some of his crew arrived in a stretch Hummer and the movie star/musician walked up to Cody, shook his hand and said, “There's so much history stored at this site I was hoping to get to see it.”

“It was very impromptu,” Cody remembered, “and I was happy to give him the tour. I was also very impressed by how knowledgeable he was about the era the site represents. When one member of his entourage made a comment about Federal Judge Isaac Parker being very pro capital punishment, Costner immediately corrected him that Parker was not personally for it, but was required to enforce it. Before we went into Parker's courtroom, I told Kevin he could sit at Parker's desk and he said, ‘Are you sure it's OK?’ He was very respectful of the site and all the history it represents.”

When Cody pointed out a photo of Wyatt Earp, however, Costner grinned and said, “I know – I played him in a movie.”

Costner, who portrays a Union soldier in his multi-Academy Awardwinning “Dances With Wolves,” talked with Cody quite a bit about the Civil War history represented at the park.

“He's the biggest celebrity we've had at the site since I've been here,” Cody said. “When photos of the visit were posted on Facebook, they reached nearly 60,000 viewers.”

After Costner's tour, one of his crew invited Cody and a guest to attend the concert that night.

It was his brother's birthday, so Cody took him to the concert, which they both enjoyed.

“I hope he comes back some time,” Cody said. “Maybe he could even bring some actor friends and they could do something here to help raise money for the U.S. Marshals Museum.”

Just the Guys Mentoring can make a difference, especially with young men

Each year, this magazine gives our readers a glimpse of the Partners in Education program of Fort Smith Public Schools, now in its 34th year.

Under the umbrella of the Partners program, businesses, civic organizations and individuals volunteer time or contribute in different ways to help students in every Fort Smith public school.

The success of this broad program, which has been studied and awarded regionally and nationally, is in its diversity. There is no cookie-cutter model for a partnership.

From simple donations of supplies or funds to the gift of volunteer labor to build a playground, every partnership is unique and each one is appreciated.

We ask the school district each year to point our writer toward an innovative or particularly effective partnership.

“Mentoring” was the immediate response this year of Zena Featherston Marshall, the district’s director of communications and community partnerships A mentor is a person who shares knowledge and experience with another, less-experienced person to help them with personal development. It is a somewhat informal, social relationship based on talking together frequently to build trust and mutual respect.

Within the Partners in Education program, mentoring is on the rise, Marshall said. There are many mentoring relationships ongoing this year, between women with young women and girls, and men with young men and boys. None of them are exactly the same nor are they required to be identical.

All mentor/student meetings at schools are monitored by school staff to ensure mutual

respect, positive communication and safety.

Some relationships are structured as one adult with very small groups of students. In several schools, a team of mentors interacts with groups of students and then breaks off to talk one-on-one for a part of the time they have together.

Mentors have spent more than a collective 3,000 hours this year engaged with students, Marshall said. The school district looks for ways to validate the resources of time and energy now being given by volunteers, by understanding how and why this is having a positive effect on kids.

“Mentoring was kind of a fad in the 1990s,” Marshall said. “We tried it, but it began to fade away.”

In the last few years, the idea of adults focusing quiet attention on one or two students emerged again and this time, parents, teachers, administrators, students and mentors themselves are finding the process to be valuable.

As educators, teachers and administrators naturally want to understand why mentoring yields good results for students – so they can support the practice and especially so they can teach more, new mentors how to do it.

The district has learned how to provide more resources to support mentors.

Mentoring is especially effective between men and boys, the school district has noted.

Grades, conduct and attitudes of the mentees improve.

We talked with male mentors, students and administrators at two schools where good results are evident to see how their programs are different or similar. One is a bit traditional, the other more creative and adaptive.

Both are absolutely inspiring.

At Chaffin, the guys hang out, talk and keep interactions low-key

As a longtime Partner in Education through his business, Candy Craze, Tim Bailey also has been recognized as an innovator – interested and even proactive in finding ways to encourage students at Chaffin Junior High. As the CEO of a candy company, it would be easy to simply hand out delicious rewards and prizes. Candy Craze, a partner business, has done some of that. But Bailey, as an individual, is self-motivated to do more – and better – for the students he strives to help.

He is deeply involved as a mentor in what Chaffin calls the Edge program, which is designed as a group activity held with all the mentors and students in the same place, at a scheduled time, for about an hour.

Beyond serving as a mentor, he collaborates with educators to evaluate and develop this method into one that can be replicated. Former assistant principal Dr. Sarah Biggs, who wrote her dissertation on designing and implementing Chaffin’s mentoring program, teamed with Bailey. The Edge program is now available as a blueprint for other schools. Mentors can be trained in practices that have been proven effective.

It starts with showing other adults they can be a mentor at all, he said, breaking down the mentoring concept into its basic challenges.

“To be a mentor – I was intimidated,” he admitted. “I have four children and I was still intimated at the thought.” He wondered how mentors could be helpful to kids in a completely different way than parenting.

“When we do this as a group, we adults reinforce each other,” he explained. “Each of us may talk with only one or two students for about 40 minutes and then we come together as a group. Even while I’m doing that one-on-one, next to us are others doing the same thing. It is reassuring.”

What, exactly, to talk about also was a bit of a mystery to him until he carefully analyzed the role of a mentor – what it was and wasn’t.

“Because I’m not in a position of authority in any way, shape or form over these mentees – I’m not their parent or a teacher, I’m in a unique position – I can do them no harm. I can only do good. I can’t ground them or punish them, for example,” he said. The students also have to adjust to the idea that a grownup has come just to talk with them.

“They initially think you’re an authority,” he observed. But soon, they accept a neutral, encouraging adult, he said.

Group mentors get to know all of the students. This spreads the responsibility and gives the kids even more access to support, he said.

“If a mentor can’t be there because he’s out of town on business, I can easily ask another kid to join us – because they know me,” he explained.

Group mentoring also means a mentor doesn’t always have the pressure of being the man with a great message that day.

“Usually, one of us will step up and share a topic with everybody, such as the value of good manners,” he explained. Another time, a manager shared that at his company, performance meant a lot but attitude was everything.

“If you have OK performance but a good attitude, you probably won’t be fired. If you have good performance but a bad attitude, you’re out of there,” Bailey recalled the mentor saying. That’s a life lesson based in real experience. It’s something young men find convincing, Bailey said.

A mentor, rather than a parent or teacher, can recognize qualities that can’t be measured by academic grades.

When an young man with a difficult home life was making low marks, Bailey recalled, only as a mentor was he free to say to the boy that his eighth-grade report cards were not necessarily going to ruin his future.

Bailey encouraged the student to bring up his grades and reminded him that ninth-grade performance “counts.” But, he also perceived the young man was showing good judgment and making positive choices in his challenging life outside of school – resisting bad influences.

“As a mentor, I could tell him that his grades don’t define him,” Bailey said. “I could tell him I was impressed with how he’s behaving as person, in difficult circumstances – I could tell him his character is outstanding.”

That kind of insight and support is the core of mentoring. A mentor can help a student set their own life goals and encourage the student’s effort toward them, constructively suggesting ways to get there. It is a very different role than an authority who requires a student to do a task.

Bailey is a natural recruiter. He has mentored students outside Chaffin such as his current colleague, Edward Merida, who asked Bailey to be his informal mentor when Merida was a high school student. Now a sophomore in college, Merida volunteers at Chaffin because of the value he says he received as a mentee and as a mentor.

Volunteering as a mentor, quantifying how to train other adults and constantly staying open to learning is personally very rewarding, according to Bailey, who is unfailingly humble about his service.

He tells others he receives much more than he gives.

At Spradling, a mentor follows a model from his own life experience

George McGill shares a thought with the Golden Knights of Spradling Elementary, a leadership team he created in a traditional mentoring style.

Mentor George McGill will tell you he grew up in a very different way than students at Spradling Elementary do today. In his childhood, Fort Smith schools were segregated by race. Black and white students attended separate schools until 1966.

McGill advocated for the equal opportunity in education and civil rights that came to pass through federal legislation in the 1950s and 1960s. But he found much to value in the way he was raised, he reflects. His was a small, close community in which parents, educators and church leaders were well acquainted with the children within it. Adults cooperated to hold out extremely high expectations to young people.

In fact, he chuckled, a kid couldn’t get away with much of anything without being found out and quickly corrected by their elders – whether relatives, neighbors, educators or faith leaders.

His experience, as he now understands it, was a form of training. It always came from what he describes as “a position of kindness.”

In mentoring the Golden Knights, a leadership team at Spradling he co-founded and conducts with Baridi Nkokheli and Garland Bray, two other black businessmen, he draws on the training he received in his own upbringing.

When McGill volunteered in 2014 to assist Spradling principal Robyn Dawson, he said to her, “Give me 10,” Dawson recalled.

As this school year draws to a close, she attests that those three men, mentoring just 10 sixth-grade boys, have changed the entire school of 400 students.

The 10 Golden Knights were selected by school staff as students who had a noticeable influence on others. Honestly, that influence could be either positive or negative, Dawson said. What McGill and his fellow mentors told them was they had been identified as – and challenged to be – leaders. The mentors began to show the boys how to take the responsibility of leading in regular, hour-long meetings.

The Golden Knights were taught to conduct their meetings by parliamentary procedure. They elected a president and officers.

“They govern themselves,” their mentor said. “We want them to have input into what we do together.”

A black men’s leadership group called the Round Table, of which McGill is a member, sponsored Golden Knight-crested polo shirts the boys wear with obvious pride.

They are tapped by their principal for responsible chores such as unlocking the school doors for visitors during parent/teacher conferences. They serve as officiants at the school’s Rise and Shine ceremonies. When help is needed from trustworthy students, Dawson calls over the intercom, “Golden Knights to the office, please.” She said they assemble as quickly as a team of superheroes.

Spradling Elementary benefits from 35 other mentors who work oneon-one with students, Dawson added. “There are many success stories there, as well.” All styles of mentoring have resulted in improved grades and an orderly atmosphere that gives teachers more time to teach, she said.

“And the boys themselves have made life changes.”

McGill said his own childhood mentors convinced him and his classmates they had “everything within themselves” to succeed. Many of his classmates have had outstanding careers. He attained an MBA and was a successful insurance agency owner before his retirement and is in his second term in the Arkansas House of Representatives, elected to serve District 78.

McGill invited the Golden Knights to the state Capitol, where they met the governor. Using skills they had practiced with their mentors, they stepped up to shake his hand and told the governor about the Golden Knights. Through a competition, five of the boys earned McGill’s invitation to serve as pages for a day at the Arkansas Legislature.

Parents are always invited to accompany their sons on excursions to Little Rock and Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art.

“Lots of fathers go with us,” McGill said. Some of the Knights have invited their mothers or older siblings, as well.

“It’s nothing new,” McGill said modestly of the effectiveness of their team’s mentoring. Just as others did for him, each of the mentors adopts that “position of kindness” in the way they encourage the boys.

“Early on, we get down on one knee, looking them square in the face, talking to them in a manner that is peaceful,” McGill explained. “They can see that big man in that suit is OK. Kindness is a tremendous asset. We want those kids to gravitate to us freely.”

Patience and teaching “in the moment” is the key, McGill believes. To teach young men to shake hands, the adults offer to shake hands first. Then they encourage their mentees to practice doing it, over and over. “Confidence is something you build,” he said.

He introduced the Golden Knights to older students from Northside High School’s Young Brothers Leading group and paired each one with a YBL member for their trip to the capital. The Golden Knights also were invited to visit the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith, where they not only met Chancellor Paul Beran, they introduced themselves, shook his hand and invited him to become an honorary member.

Service to the community is one more expectation the mentors have shown the Golden Knights, taking them to work as volunteers in a local food bank. “No matter your own circumstances, you can always help someone else,” McGill told them.

McGill and his colleagues are creating a sense of the close community in which he was raised. The Knights now know older young men, respected educators and legislators are aware of them. Their world has grown past home and elementary, Dawson observed. “They’re talking about college.”

Dawson piles on praise and gratitude for the improvement all Spradling’s mentors have brought to their school.

“We see better grades from the kids, more parental interest in what kids are doing and just a transformed atmosphere,” she said.

McGill and his team have decided to mentor another 10 Golden Knights next year and to continue to meet with their original 10 students, who will move up to Kimmons Junior High, to show the young men one more lesson: a long-term commitment.

Annual Partners in Education Luncheon and special workshop is June 4 Each year all Partners in Education volunteers are thanked with a luncheon where awards of recognition are presented for outstanding efforts between partners and the schools they help. There are more than 200 Partner in Education member companies and organizations.

Guest speaker will be Sally Northway Ogden, author of the book Words Will Never Hurt Me: Helping Kids Handle Teasing, Bullying and Putdowns.

Ogden is a teacher with more than 30 years of classroom experience. She taught French, Spanish and Psychology in the public schools, mostly at Chatfield Senior High School in Jefferson County, Colo. She also directs workshops and conferences nationally for teachers and parents.

The day also includes a two-hour Ogden workshop on bullying to teach adults how to help. Partners, mentors, educators and the public are invited to attend.

Greg Smith Modern Day Trailblazer

O

n a crisp autumn day in 2007, Greg Smith left his home with a pair of gloves and a freshly sharpened chainsaw after instructing his wife on how to make his bail in the event he was jailed for his activity. What could a respected attorney of 35 years who made the highest score on the Arkansas Bar Exam do to potentially land him behind bars?

Carrying his chainsaw, he walked down Old Greenwood Road to the corner of Free Ferry Road and Rogers Avenue and began cutting and clearing overgrown brush that would eventually become the Old Railroad Trail. Greg didn’t ask the city for permission and didn’t bother with the red tape. He recruited co-conspirators, such as friends, neighbors and juvenile delinquents who were required to perform community service to assist him in the trail’s creation and quickly made it a weekly (Saturday) event.

Greg’s love of the outdoors paired well with his zeal for creating greenspace, trails and beautification projects for Fort Smith. With a few other citizens in 2009, he formed Park Partners of Fort Smith Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation, with the intent to improve the

city’s trail system, parks, waterways and playgrounds and to add more greenspace.

Park Partners worked closely with the Fort Smith Trails and Greenways Planning Committee to identify 22 trail corridors to connect the city and provide bikeways, trails and sidewalks. He also negotiated and prepared easements for the River Trail and waterway access on the Arkansas River. Recently, a new portion of that trail was named for him and ground broken to begin the work.

At the groundbreaking ceremony, attended by Greg’s family, many personal friends and park/trail supporters, Mayor Sandy Sanders noted that if Greg were present he’d no doubt prefer to stand at the back, unnoticed.

Sanders recalled the typical sight of Greg, working “with his own lawnmower and weedeater, working to make a trail.”

With a gift of $1 million from the Walton Foundation, completion of the Greg Smith Riverwalk will invite entry from downtown, leading walkers, runners and cyclists directly from urban streets to a tranquil riverfront landscape of water, trees and sky. Modest though the trailblazer was, Sanders said, “it was Greg” who was the reason this new trail connection will exist.

Greg threw out the first ball at a Washington Nationals game in 2007. He wasn’t able to get the pitch across the plate but enjoyed it immensely anyway.

It’s easy to see Greg’s determination and devotion as a constant quality throughout his life. After graduating in 1977 with a law degree from Georgetown University, Greg moved to California with plans to live and practice there. Shortly after he passed the California bar exam, he learned his father had broken both arms in a workplace accident. Greg rushed back to Fort Smith to care for his mother and father. His loyalty also showed in his career. He spent more than 30 years practicing at the same law firm on North 7th Street in downtown Fort Smith.

Greg married Sue Plattner and they raised four sons and a daughter. The Plattner-Smith home is a lively and entertaining place, due to lots of love and a large amount of laughter. Greg worked hard, played hard and enjoyed letting go and being silly. Not only was Greg’s humor abundant, so was his generous heart. He gave – and gave often – time, money and in-kind donations. He took on a hefty amount of pro bono work for the Arkansas Volunteer Lawyers for the Elderly, Western Arkansas Legal Services and many other nonprofit entities. Even more impressive, he never refused a pro bono case.

In the last decade, Greg served as a board member for the Fort

Smith Public Library, where he worked closely with engineers and architects to build the main library on Rogers Avenue; the Fort Smith Museum of History, which he assisted in procuring some historical items; the Fort Smith Boys and Girls Club, a program he was passionate about; and the Arkansas Legal Services.

Beyond his work on these and other boards, Greg greatly influenced the lives of friends, neighbors, children and his employees. He gave each year to many programs such as Shop with a Cop, Community Rescue Mission, Next Step Day Room and the Good Samaritan Clinic and donated airline miles to an employee fighting liver cancer for her treatments in Louisiana. He liked his good works to remain almost invisible.

Greg’s efforts were visible to Fort Smith’s residents and its mayor.

Greg emailed neighbors and friends every week to work on weeding, trimming and clearing a path for the Old Railroad Trail. It wasn’t long before the public was able to enjoy a beautiful walking path between Free Ferry Road and Park Avenue. No sooner than the land was cleared, Greg began the same work in different areas – the Ruth Armstrong Bird Sanctuary and the River Trail.

May 12 election offers a chance to expand and connect city walking, running and biking trails

In 2012, for his work through Park Partners, Greg was the recipient of the Noble Cause Award, a humanitarian award that honors those who improve their community by helping others.

According to a press release issued by the creators of the Noble Cause Award, Greg is the “inspirational kind that plows through obstacles, embraces hard work and instigates change. His legacy will be enjoyed by generations.”

There is much Greg loved to do – traveling, camping, hiking, riding bikes, playing racketball, gardening, fishing, reading, listening to jazz … the list is endless. Many may know Greg loved baseball but few may know he threw the first pitch at a Washington Nationals game. He was unable to get the ball across the plate, but laughed when he told the story, “There’s nothing like being booed by 30,000 people.”

It’s a testament to his character that he could laugh at himself and it’s that same humor that drew so many to his side.

Greg lost his battle to liver disease in 2012.

His family urges everyone to consider becoming an organ donor. Fort Smith lost a respected attorney and community leader. However, his many hours of community improvements have left a lasting legacy that will be appreciated by future generations.

Contributing writer Shael McDonald, a former employee of Smith’s legal practice and friend of his family, credits him as a mentor with the most significant influence on her life and career.

With two affirmative votes in a May 12 municipal election, citizens of Fort Smith can decide to fund the continuing creation of more trails for walking, running and cycling in the city.

On the same ballot, those in favor will vote “For” continuation of an existing 1 percent sale tax in its current form and “Yes” to use 5 percent of those funds for trails and bikeways.

Supporters of a more walkable city have formed a community organization called Fort Smith Trails and Greenways to present numerous potential benefits that can stem from a “connected and continuous” trail system.

Drew Linder, a member of Fort Smith Trails and Greenways, said his interest was raised originally by experiencing successful trails in other cities, in-state and in Tulsa.

“In central Arkansas and Tulsa, trails are near soccer fields,” he said. When taking his child to soccer tournaments, he often brought along bikes and enjoyed riding trails in breaks between tournament games. He noticed how heavily the trails were used by all ages: families, riders, runners and walkers.

It was when he realized an economic development angle of trails that Linder, who works at First National Bank, became an active campaigner for a Fort Smith trail system.

In a presentation he shares on behalf of Fort Smith Trails and Greenways, Linder says a trails system is one of the amenities that can make a city more attractive to prospective employers and employees.

As an example in this region, Linder cites Northwest Arkansas trail systems as a place where new businesses have opened nearby deliberately, to attract passing trail walkers. Fayetteville’s trails, in particular, are an example of the benefit to young people who are not only walking for recreation, but biking or walking for daily transportation to school, work and shopping.

The Arkansas Economic Development Commission has pointed out specifically that trail systems are an amenity that works for recruiting and retention of businesses and employees, the protrails presentation says.

With a connected and continuos trail system, more people can enjoy their recreation and exercise in more safety, away from vehicle traffic. All modes of trail use provide significant health benefits to the people who travel the trails.

Linder observed that property developers are quite interested in locating near trailways for the benefit of home buyers and residents.

Fort Smith Trails and Greenways’ campaign for the retention of the 1 percent sales tax and designation of 5 percent of that fund’s use for trails also points out how an economic positive – increasing growth at Chaffee Crossing – will decrease its viability for runners, cyclists and walkers. Its formerly low-traffic streets will become less friendly to foot and bike traffic.

The community pro-trails group urges continuation of the 1 percent sales tax even without their hoped-for additional vote for trail development.

Connected City: Fort Smith Trails and Greenways, supporters of retaining and using a portion of Fort Smith’s existing 1 percent sales tax to develop more walking, running and cycling trails, publicly surveyed citizens to determine their desires and priorities for the extension of existing and planned paved trails.

Dream Up, Scheme Up, Team Up!

You can’t help but notice of late, a wonderful trend developing in Fort Smith – the proliferation of “dreamers” in our midst in the form of people who are sharing their visions of new events for our city and stepping up to make them become reality.

Every attraction or event in Fort Smith began with a dreamer who depended on initiative, dedication, a group of like-minded individuals and, occasionally, good oldfashioned stubbornness.

The Bass Reeves Monument had Judge Jim Spears, Christmas Honors had Philip Merry and this very publication had Linda Seubold and Lynn Wasson, determined to see their dreams come true, to the advantage of our city.

New dreams are coming true in 2015 because of people like: Patrick Pendleton, who directed the creation and execution of the highly successful Fort Smith Marathon in February; Dennis Snow, who is president of the Steel Horse Rally motorcycle event (May 12); Jeff Gosey, president of the upcoming Peacemaker Music and Arts Festival ( July 31Aug. 2); Steve Clark and John McIntosh, the “dreamers” behind the Unexpected Project Festival of Murals slated for Sept. 6-13.

The people behind all four events agree the universal formula to turn dreams into reality is to share their vision with a group of supporters who share their passion for the projects.

Thus far, event organizers are most surprised with the number of supporters who join their teams to create events for their 501c3 nonprofit groups, with an eye toward providing events for citizens, generating tourists and sharing their financial successes with other deserving Fort Smith organizations.

A prime example is the $40,000 check recently presented to Fort Smith Park Partners by the organizers of the Fort Smith Marathon.

Funds have been dedicated to Fort Smith trails and greenways projects – money that will not have to come from taxpayers.

Some of the “dreams” have existed for decades while others have come to fruition in just recent months. Snow said he has wanted to stage a motorcycle event for many years but felt like the timing was finally right for the city.

“I’ve been encouraged by the support we have gotten from city departments and many people who are just ready to help make something happen for Fort Smith,” he said. “Hopefully, all these event planners can share their experiences with each other in the future so that we can all become annual events.”

Gosey’s dream took more of a “cyber” approach. “The idea for the Peacemaker events began with a simple Facebook post.

It wasn’t long before lots of people voiced their support, and now we’re under way with fabulous plans,” he said.

McIntosh said the world renowned artists scheduled to create our downtown murals are sure to bring attention to Fort Smith and “grow our cool factor.”

Hats off to those bold dreamers and their hundreds of supporters who are helping dreams come true in Fort Smith through their dedication to create new events for both locals and visitors. Be sure to watch here for publicity on these new 2015 events, take advantage by attending – or better yet – contact one of the organizers and lend your support. The best dreams are always worth sharing.

Redwork Group Shares

E

very other Friday, tucked away in a corner of the Van Buren Public Library, meets a group of ladies passionate about a unique pastime. Known as the Redwork Group, the talented seamstresses create beautiful patterns using a form of embroidery that dates back to the late 1800s.

The Redwork Group is comprised of 12 women from throughout the area, who each derive great pleasure from their craft. Twice a month, members come together with supplies in hand, and stitch along the sketches of their fabric squares while chatting amongst themselves.

“It is all about sharing here,” said leader Susan Sears. Members share everything from sewing techniques and thread, to stories and jokes during their gatherings. They often stop to help one other, doling out advice on how to best accomplish a stitch or finish a pattern. At moments, some are fiercely focused on their task, while others simultaneously stitch and chat with the group.

“The nice thing about it is it’s not precise,” said Sears. “Everyone has their own style for doing it. Once you learn the basics, you sort of make it your own.”

To achieve the redwork look, the ladies trace a pattern onto their fabric squares, which are generally made of white muslin or linen.

From there, members hand stitch the red thread along the lines, slowly revealing a unique design. Popular redwork themes include adorable animals, children, nursery rhyme scenes, scriptures and the infamous “Sunbonnet Sue.” The patterns are used to customize towels, pillows, throws or other decor. Individual squares are often sewn together to create large blankets or quilts that display coordinating scenes or themes.

Redwork's name is derived from its original use of Turkey red cotton embroidery thread. Made popular in the late 19th century, the machine-made thread was inexpensive and colorfast, meaning it didn't bleed onto fabric. It was a common practice among women in the

Victorian era and during its heyday, patterns were used for giveaways and magazine pullouts. After World War II, redwork declined in popularity, but had a resurgence following the 1976 Bicentennial when Americans took a renewed interest in hand crafts. Today, groups such as the Van Buren Redwork club have helped introduce the delicate art form to a new generation.

In explaining why they do redwork, the group unanimously agreed the hobby is a great form of stress relief.

“It is so nice to just tune out and zone completely in on a pattern,” one member said. “You can take it anywhere because it doesn't require much space to store it.” Many explained they enjoy carrying it when they travel, have to wait for an appointment or when they visit family.

“It is also so rewarding to complete a project and see a beautiful piece come together. Redwork is truly stunning.”

In addition to sewing for themselves, group members also use their skills to benefit others. Past projects have included blankets for newborns and other items distributed by local charities to those in need.

Although a “tight-knit” bunch, the Redwork Group is always pleased to have visitors and hopes to see the club grow.

“We would love to have more join our group,” Sears said. “We welcome everyone, regardless of how skilled they are – or aren't – at sewing. It doesn't matter if you have any experience at all, you can come. We are happy to teach new members and help get them started with the techniques and supplies they need.”

The Redwork Group is open to women of all ages and there is no cost to join. They meet the second and fourth Fridays of the month from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Van Buren Public Library, 1409 Main Street, Van Buren. For more information, call Sears at 479-414-8467.

Marcia Cooksey says have more fun

I

n Marcia Cooksey’s professional opinion, you’re probably taking something about decorating your home a little too seriously.

She thinks you should have more fun.

Her shop on Van Buren’s Main Street is populated with examples of her discerning eye for “good bones” in furniture. Much of what she selects does not loudly declare a “period” of antique furniture but, whatever its age, possesses a quality of timeless style and usefulness. That’s from her long experience of being a decorator, not a collector or dealer of antiques. She likes what she likes – and thinks her clients should, too.

And then there’s the fun stuff.

One piece at a time (never a whole shelf full) she adds both new and found merchandise that makes her smile or even laugh out loud. She has an eye for the original and unique. She knows someone is going to find their heart’s desire in a silly, soft velvet king’s crown or a mysterious glittered cat-eyed mask. Someone has been waiting all their lives for a sequined red cowboy hat or a knitted beanie that transforms them into a cartoon-character Smurf, so she has them.

One of her own favorite pieces hangs near the front door of her shop: it’s a primitive, handpainted sign that says “Rabites for sale.” It’s the misspelling that made her stop her car one day and buy it from the rabbit-seller himself.

Primitive and handmade art appeals to her, although in her long career as a decorator she has helped design the interiors of many fine homes, always to fit the taste and needs of the client – not her own. That’s the skill interior design calls for – making a client feel their surroundings reflect their ideas, lifestyle and sense of beauty, she explained.

“You ought to walk into your own house and think ‘I like being here,’ ” Marcia said.

After so many years in the business of decorating, many of her longtime clients call on Marcia to help them brighten their homes by simply remixing what they have, rearranging rooms or furnishings within the rooms and adding just few new touches.

Marcia has an extensive selection of fabrics and her motto is “we can reupholster anything!” She proves it with a vintage upright vacuum cleaner reupholstered in a fancy striped pattern.

From exuberant, contemporary fabrics such as the multicolored padded bench in her redand-yellow-themed front window to luxurious, traditional formal fabrics, Marcia can fit any taste in upholstery.

“We just sit at a big table and talk about it for a while,” Marcia said of choosing upholstery styles. New fabric can transform a piece of furniture. Her service offers reasonable prices and high-quality craftsmanship.

It’s that “talk about for a while” part that may be the secret behind Marcia’s long career. Her easy-going attitude and humor are the reason her customers love to drop in at Marcia’s shop.

WHAT’S COOKING with KRISTAN ROLAND CHERRY CHEESE DANISH BARS Pastry: 1 sheet frozen puff pastry, thawed 8 oz. block cream cheese, slightly softened 1/3 cup sugar 1 cup cherry pie filling Crumb topping: 1/3 cup all purpose flour 1/4 cup white sugar 2 tbsp. butter, cold and cut into small pieces Glaze: 1/2 cup powdered sugar 1 tbsp. warm water Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Unroll thawed puff pastry onto a baking sheet and set aside.

Prepare crumb topping: In a small bowl, combine flour and sugar. Cut in butter with your hands until combined and crumbly. Set aside.

In the bowl of your mixer, beat cream cheese and sugar on medium speed until smooth and combined. Spread evenly on puff pastry, leaving 1/2 inch plain all around the edges.

Spread cherry filling evenly over cream cheese, again leaving it off about 1/2 inch of the edge.

Fold plain edges of pastry in, pressing in with your fingers to seal.

Sprinkle pastry evenly with crumb topping and bake for about 20 minutes or until crust is golden brown.

In a small bowl, mix powdered sugar and water until smooth and drizzle over pastry. Let cool before cutting and serving.

TOASTED COCONUT WHITE CHOCOLATE MACADAMIA BARS 1 ⁄3 cup flour 11⁄2 tsp baking soda 1 stick salted butter, slightly softened 13⁄4 cup packed brown sugar 11⁄2 tsp vanilla extract 2 large eggs 1 cup toasted coconut 1 cup white chocolate chips 1 cup coarsely chopped macadamia nuts Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line a 9x13 pan with foil and spray with nonstick spray.

Set aside.

In a small bowl, mix together the flour and baking soda and set aside.

In the bowl of a mixer, cream together the butter, sugar, and vanilla on medium speed until light and fluffy, about 2 minutes. Add the 1

eggs one at a time, mixing until combined.

Turn the mixer speed to low and slowly add the flour mixture until blended. Fold in nuts, coconut and white chocolate and spread evenly in prepared pan.

Bake the bars for about 30 minutes, or until the edges are dark brown and puffy and the center is completely golden. They will look gooey and a cake tester will not come out clean – this is normal.

Remove from oven and let cool completely in pan. Cover pan and refrigerate until chilled and firm. Cut into bars and serve.

Note: To toast coconut, place coconut in a cold pan on the stove. Turn heat to medium low and stir until coconut turns golden brown.

Remove from heat and let cool completely.

BOSTON CREAM PIE BARS For the Bars: 1 box yellow cake mix 1/2 cup salted butter, melted 2 large eggs For the Topping: 2 3.4 oz. packages instant vanilla pudding 3 cups whole milk For the Ganache: 1/2 cup semisweet chocolate chips 1/3 cup heavy cream 3 tablespoons light corn syrup, or honey Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line an 8x8 pan with foil, spray with nonstick spray and set aside.

In the bowl of a mixer, beat cake mix, melted butter and eggs on medium low speed until combined. Mixture will be thick. Press mixture into prepared pan and bake for 15-20 minutes, until edges are set and golden and center is puffy. Remove from oven and let cool completely.

While bars are baking, prepare topping: In a large bowl, whisk together pudding mixes and milk until thick, about 3 minutes. Place in the refrigerator to thicken until bars have finished baking and have cooled completely.

Spread filling over bars evenly and place in the refrigerator while you prepare your ganache.

In a microwave safe bowl, heat chocolate chips and heavy cream for about 2 minutes, stopping to stir every 20 seconds until smooth. Stir in corn syrup or honey and let cool until thick and no longer warm. Spread over bars. Alternately, you can spoon over bars that have been cut into squares. Keep bars in refrigerator until time to serve.

GERMAN CHOCOLATE OATMEAL BARS 2 cups flour 2 cups old-fashioned oats 11⁄2 cups sweetened, shredded coconut 11⁄2 cups packed brown sugar 1 tsp. baking soda 3 sticks salted butter, melted 8 oz. German chocolate, chopped into chunks 12 oz. jar caramel ice cream topping 1 cup chopped pecans Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Coat a 9x13-inch glass pan with butter or spray with nonstick cooking spray.

In a large bowl, combine flour, oats, coconut, brown sugar and baking soda. Add melted butter and stir with a wooden spoon until well mixed (I mixed with my hands toward the end). Press half the mixture into your prepared pan and bake for 17 minutes.

Remove from oven and sprinkle evenly with chocolate chunks. Let sit for 5 minutes, then gently spread with a spatula. Pour caramel evenly over the bars, then sprinkle with pecans.

Crumble the rest of the oat mixture over the caramel mixture and bake for 17 more minutes.

Remove from oven and cool for several hours before cutting into squares and serving.

GOOEY KEY LIME BARS 1 box key lime cake mix 1/2 cup butter, melted 2 large eggs 8 oz. cream cheese, softened 2 large eggs 4 cups powdered sugar 1 can key lime frosting Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line a 9x13 pan with foil and spray with nonstick spray.

Set aside.

In the bowl of your mixer, beat cake mix, melted butter and 2 large eggs until a smooth dough forms. Press evenly in prepared pan.

In the bowl of your mixer, beat cream cheese and eggs until combined. Add powdered sugar and beat until smooth. Pour over crust in pan and bake for about 40 minutes or until top is light golden brown.

Let bars cool for 10 minutes. Remove lid and foil from frosting and microwave for 35 seconds. Stir, then spoon over bars and gently spread evenly.

Let bars cool for about 45 minutes, then cover and refrigerate until firm. Peel back foil and cut into bars before serving.

owsing, divining, water witching, switch twitching, rhabdomancy, doodle bugging, water wishing – and probably more terms that I am not aware of – are all names for the same practice of finding underground water sources.

While watering my garden with my ever-increasingly-expensive city water, it occurred to me: Hey, I need a well. This led me on one of the most fascinating investigations I have undertaken, into what I thought was the rather simple world of dowsing.

In my search, the name Gladys McCoy kept coming up. I was thrilled to find out that Gladys, an internationally known dowser, lives in Fayetteville.

Gladys is a co-founder of the nonprofit organization Ozark Research Institute and was elected Dowser of the Year by the America Society of Dowsers in 1996. She is a sought-after speaker at workshops and conferences all over and works daily at the Ozark Research Institute.

I was a little surprised when I got the nerve to call and she answered her own phone and said yes, she had an opening to see me that very day.

“I never knew my husband was a dowser until we needed a water source on our property,” she explained to me. “Harold had worked in military intelligence and when he retired, he wanted to help people. He used his skills as a dowser to help people until his death in 2010.”

“I believe everyone can and should learn to dowse,” she said. With that simple statement, she proceeded to give me and Vernon a short but powerful lesson in the art of dowsing.

“There are still areas around that don’t have city water and that’s where a well comes in handy. I find dowsing works best when there is need, not greed,” Gladys told me. I hope I am counted in the “need” category.

All types of ordinary objects can be used by dowsers. The most common are the Y rod, often a tree branch; the L rods, usually just a bent coat hanger; or a pendulum.

Gladys, an ordained minister, had an easy, kind manner as she instructed Vernon in how to hold the dowsing rods.

At first, we were not looking for water – just an object; a piece of wood she placed on the ground in front of Vernon.

“Mostly, it is a matter of opening your mind and getting out of your own way,” she said.

Sure enough, when Vernon reached the area where the wood was placed, the divining rods pointed downward. It was fascinating and fun and a great mini lesson. Even though I saw it myself, I was still skeptical but intrigued.

Physics makes me hungry, so before returning home we had our traditional garden journey lunch at Tim’s Pizza on the Fayetteville Square.

I was amazed at the information I kept finding concerning the phenomenon of dowsing, which has been around since early man. Cave paintings have been documented depicting dowsing rods and countless scholarly volumes have been written on what I thought was an Ozark hillfolk tradition.

Here is just a bit of what I found. Gen. Patton used dowsers to find fresh water for his troops in North Africa in World War II. Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara used dowsers in Vietnam to locate land mines and underground ammunition dumps.

Albert Einstein, Isaac Newton and Leonardo DaVinci were all dowsers and President Herbert Hoover, as a young mining engineer, translated a paper from Latin praising dowsing.

Back to reality. I still really want a water source so I can keep my garden alive without spending my retirement fund.

The answer came in the mail. My mailman delivered my good friend and neighbor Linda’s mail in my box by mistake. When I took

it over to her house I asked if she had a well on her property.

“Yes,” she said, “but my good friend says it doesn’t have enough water to supply my yard.”

Turns out Linda went to high school with a dowser. Kenneth Musgrove is a third-generation well dowser.

I called Kenneth and we had a grand time talking about his family history in this area and finding water wells by dowsing. His grandfather was a dowser in the early 1900s who started Musgrove Drilling. His dad continued the tradition and, at 19, Kenneth began water dowsing.

“I believe it is a gift,” Kenneth said. “I am now retired but have had the honor of working with many people in my career, even a group from the Soviet Union who came here to consider buying a coal mine. They asked me to dowse it. I did and my dowsing plans were exactly what they had on the survey map. “ I am so energized with the prospect of having a sustainable water source on my property. It seems Vernon might have the gift and I’ve also met two experts. Surely a well is in my future.

Simply put, whether you believe dowsers find water using intuition and observational skills or believe it is all fictional, it is an ancient art that is finding new life because of our ever-challenging climate.

Introducing high school students to fishing is a joy for their volunteer coaches

F

ishing is the most popular outdoor recreational sport in Arkansas.

It generates millions of dollars into the state’s economy through sales of everything from rods and reels to bass boats.

Retail and sporting goods stores are a sight to see with all the fishing rods lined up pointed at the ceiling while shelves are a blaze of color with artificial lures of every shape, size and dimension waiting to find a home in someone’s tackle box.

On any given weekend, you can observe a myriad of boats heading out for some piece of water to fish. All of this is pretty easy to see.

Something you may not see are the life lessons and character building that fishing generates.

That’s what this story is all about.

Enter Buck Cobley.

My first impression upon meeting him was he is a big ‘ol boy. Buck is fairly tall on a large frame. His dark features, including his beard, make him an imposing figure. My assignment was to interview Buck about the Crawford County Hawghunters high school fishing program of which Buck is the founder and current president.

The Hawghunters came about when Buck helped some fellow oilfield workers with their kids’ fishing tournament in Russellville a few years ago.

After leaving the oilfield business, which kept him away from his own kids for long periods of time, he became manager of the sporting goods department for A to Z in Alma.

That solved two issues for him. First, he got to be at home every night with his family and it allowed him time to fish with his kids.

He had already noticed there were no fishing clubs in Crawford County and, based on the participation and success of the tournament he had helped with in Russellville, he got busy.

Buck organized an outdoor expo at Grandview Assembly of God Church in Natural Dam, which presented him an opportunity to poll attendees to determine whether there was significant interest in starting a high school fishing organization.

There was interest. At their first meeting, six people showed up.

Buck was encouraged. He leaned heavily for help on Ray Scheide, a professional fisherman who also runs the Russellville group, and Barling policeman Greg McMahan, who heads up a similar group in Fort Smith.

It also didn’t hurt that special projects coordinator for PRADCO Outdoor Brands Robert Lawson was fishing with his two boys on that very first fishing tournament Buck had helped with in Russellville when he got the idea for the Hawghunters. Lawson is now the vice president of group.

The Hawghunters high school fishing team was created with members representing each of Crawford County’s five school districts. It has a sixman committee, is a 501c3 organization and is sanctioned by The Bass Federation organization, which is a subgroup under the prestigious FLW Bass fishing tour.

In 2013, the organization started off strong with 36 junior and senior high participants ranging in age from 11 to 18. It now boasts 70 students, six of which are girls. Because the Hawghunters are a non-profit group and receive no funding from any of Crawford County’s school districts, students from school districts outside the county also are welcome.

“We also have student fishermen from Ozark, Fort Smith, Lavaca and Stilwell fishing with us,” Buck said.

The rapid rise in student interest and participation also has attracted the notice of all the area’s sport tackle and boat dealers who recognize that these kids are their future customers.

Parents and other local fishing enthusiasts are helping and volunteering with their time and energies to make the group a success.

“The Hawghunters don’t just fish,” Buck said. “We try to instill good stewardship mentality of the environment so we’ll have good places to fish for them and eventually their kids.”

The group adopted Clear Creek in Crawford County in 2013 to police it and keep it free from trash and debris.

The committee and the volunteers make sure these kids don’t just get to fish. They guide the young anglers to mature into people who contribute

OUTDOORS to their community. Students volunteer at events to not only heighten their club’s visibility but to help pay back to the people who sponsor them.

But there are other things you don’t know about or see – the life lessons and character-building aspects fishing cultivates.

Perhaps more than the activity itself is the time spent with your dad fishing along side you or piloting your boat. Perhaps it’s the sense of belonging with others during difficult adolescent years. Perhaps it’s the peace, tranquility and stability nature provides away from a dysfunctional home life, if only for an afternoon.

“We have a number of club members who are from single-parent homes,” Buck said. “Most times those kids are with their mothers who may know nothing about fishing or the outdoors. It’s not their fault, it’s just the cards they’ve been dealt.”

Now, here’s what you don’t see but I did.

That is how this giant of man welled up when he talks about these kids.

I saw him fight back tears as he told me stories about how great these Crawford County Hawghunters are.

I saw how this man with the big frame has an even bigger heart.

I saw something more than fishing. I saw the future, thanks in part to Buck Cobley and all the parents, volunteers and sponsors.

My dearly departed outdoor show co-host, the legendary Jack Ogle, raised three boys. Jack would say, “If you take the time to take a kid fishing, chances are you’ll never have to bail them out of jail.”

Jack would have been impressed to know about the Hawghunters and to meet Buck. I know I was.

Wakarusa, June 4-7, will have more than 150 acts on six stages

Wakarusa music and camping festival, held at Mulberry Mountain near Ozark, Ark., is a world-class concert event about a half-hour from Fort Smith.

Regarded by its fans as a pilgrimage to a friendly community as much as a musical event, the four-day event creates a small city at Mulberry Mountain that also holds costume contests and a parade, daily yoga, drum circles, art installations and canoeing, fishing and rafting on the nearby Mulberry River.

Spread across six stages in the sprawling, wooded park, the music begins early in the day and ends early in the morning. Acts as diverse as the Roots, Umphrey’s McGee, Major Lazer, STS9, Galactic with Macy Gray and Ben Harper & the Innocent Criminals. Electronic, jam and dance music is performed along with rap, blues, rock, folk, reggae and Americana. The full line-up and stage schedule is available online.

Four-day passes can be purchased on the festival website starting at $179, plus fees.

Camping passes are sold separately, as well as VIP and RV options. All admission is by multi-day pass; day tickets are not sold. All ages, including families, may attend.

Riverfront Blues Festival announces its artists for the 25th year Larry McCray

Talented blues artists with Arkansas roots are featured in the Fort Smith Riverfront Blues Society’s 25th annual Riverfront Blues Festival June 26-27. The festival will held at Harry E. Kelley River Park on the big Donald W. Reynolds stage.

Arkansas’ favorite performers top the bill. Larry McCray headlines Saturday night following Jimmy Thackery, an artist who adopted the state years ago after playing the Eureka Springs Blues Festival. McCray was born in Magnolia, Ark., and now has his own label named Magnolia Records. Like many a bluesman from here and Mississippi, he migrated to Detroit with his family and soon was influenced by the three Kings – B.B., Freddie and Albert. His guitar work is described as savage while his vocals are warm and soulful.

Thackery is a rollicking, masterful guitarist who takes his audience wherever he wants them to go. He put in stage time with Muddy Waters and honed his craft through road warrior touring with the band the Nighthawks before going solo and creating his own groups.

Friday night will start and end with local artists who have been to the International Blues Challenge held by the Blues Foundation in Memphis – IBC qualifier Matt Dodd opens the show and Chris Cameron closes it. Cameron was the very first Arkansas winner of the IBC as 1997’s “Most Promising Young Blues Guitarist.” He has lived up to that promise, fronting the Chris Cameron Band since 2005.

Another IBC prize winner, Nick Schnebelen, will perform a June 25 preview party at Warren’s Rec Room in Alma, Ark., with state long-time favorite, the band Oreo Blue. Lead man Gary Hutchison says they are currently working on a brand new album to be released in time for the blues festival.

A blues workshop will be held June 27 before the festival, led by Ben Prestage presenting his unique approach to the blues and the instruments he uses. The workshop is open to the public and will be followed by a live set from Prestage with local singer/songwriter Laura Pierson opening.

Friday night’s line up is Matt Dodd, the Wanda Watson Band, Hadden Sayers and Chris Cameron. Saturday’s order of events will be the Eric Matthews Band, Steve Hester and DejaVooDoo, Jimmy Thackery and Larry McCray.

New Fort Smith festival debuts July 31-Aug. 2 This could be the start of something big – a group of experienced music promoters and businesspeople, including Jeff Gosey, owner of AJ’s Oyster House, and Bill Neumeier of the former Neumeier’s Rib Room, have created a new Fort Smith music and arts festival to be held on the riverfront.

The idea for this festival began with a post on Facebook by Gosey. He asked if anyone was interested in helping start a new music festival in downtown Fort Smith. A few weeks later, Gosey, along with a few enthusiastic friends, formed a board and got to work. “This has been an amazing ride so far,” says Gosey, festival president. “I’m blown away by the dedication and hard work of this organization and we’re excited to announce a killer line up for this inaugural event.”

The event is expected to draw thousands of music and art lovers from all over the region.

Organizers say their goal is to expand people’s cultural exposure by offering a wide variety of music genres, which will include gospel, blues, rock, country, bluegrass and jam bands.

Art exhibitions also will be set up around the festival to visually enrich and educate the public.

Headlining the festival will be the Chris Robinson Brotherhood with country act Jason Isbell, Lucero, the Cate Brothers, New Orleans artist Anders Osborne, Corey Smith, a gospel tent and many more performers.

Tickets for this three-day festival are already on sale at the website peacemakerfest.com, where all schedules, details and calls for volunteers can be found.

Motorcycles will rule the avenue at inaugural Steel Horse Rally The first-ever Steel Horse Rally is a charity motorcycle rally honoring military, veterans, law enforcement and first responders. It features the largest motorcycle parade ever in downtown Fort Smith, charity poker runs, motorcycle competitions, great food, a Miss Steel Horse Rally Bikini Contest and motorcycle traffic only on Garrison Avenue between 6th and 10th Streets on both evenings after rush hour traffic has cleared.

The parade line-up will begin staging at 4 p.m. on May 2 at the Fort Smith Park, 5301 Riverfront Drive, before roaring onto Garrison Avenue. Spectators are invited to line the avenue.

Concerts are set for both nights at the Harry E. Kelley Riverpark with acts Hillbilly Vegas, Judge Parker and Backroad Anthem. Admission will raise money for local charities. Advance tickets for concerts are available online for $15 admitting buyers to both concerts. Single night tickets are $10 each at the gate.

No coolers or firearms are permitted inside the park. Vendors will offer food and beverages.

The Steel Horse Rally Inc. is a 501(c)3 non-profit charity and all donations are tax deductible. Rally directors have selected three local charities to benefit from the inaugural event: Fort Smith Museum of History, which has a special Motorcycle Memories Exhibit during the rally, honors regional history.

Darby Legacy Project honors Gen. William O. Darby of Fort Smith who helped create the modern day Rangers. The group plans to erect a statue of Gen. Museum shares Motorcycle Memories To coincide with the Steel Horse Motorcycle Rally, the popular exhibit Motorcycle Memories opens in the Boyd Gallery of the Fort Smith Museum of History with refreshments and a program on local and regional motorcycle history. The exhibition, which was first presented in 2008, features vintage motorcycles and photographs exploring the “art of the motorcycle” in Fort Smith and the region from the 1940s through present day.

Fort Smith has an historical association with motorcycle culture. Learn about the people and places that put the region on the map for motorcyclists. Quin Winter’s bike shop on Towson Avenue was the nexus of motorcycle culture in Fort Smith from 1939 until 1975. His sons, Leroy and Robert Winters, gained national fame for their accomplishments in the field of motorcycle racing. In 1940, Fort Smithian Ercie Gann became a charter member of the “Motor Maids,” a national organization of female motorcyclists. The annual “Razorback Run,” a 150-mile round trip ride from Fort Smith to White Rock Mountain near Mulberry, Ark. drew motorcycle enthusiasts from a regional area from 1952 to 1955. Otis Spiker played a vital role in the area cycling culture. As one of the few manufacturers of Henderson motorcycle parts, Spiker gained national recognition as well as becoming a local motorcycle legend.

Motorcycle Memories is designed to unite the “art of the motorcycle” with the generation of Americans that enjoy a lifestyle peculiar to the American mainstream. Kicking off Fort Smith Western Heritage Month, the Fort Smith Museum of History will present a program with Denny Flynn, champion bull rider and director of Kay Rodgers Park.

Charleston, Ark., native Denny Flynn will speak on the history of the rodeo in Fort Smith, as well as his experience as a champion bull rider. Induction into the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame in 2010 crowns a lifetime of achievement for Flynn, known as the most talented bull rider to win a world title. Flynn qualified for the National Finals Rodeo 10 times from 1974 through 1982 and set a record for the most bull riding average titles won. In 1979, his 98-point ride on Red Lightning was a record for 12 years and remains the second highest score in Pro Rodeo history. His 1974 92-point score on a bull named Ed Pavik held the record for 15 years.

Meet this rodeo legend and hear his story. The first organized rodeo in Fort Smith was held at Andrews Field in 1934. Titled the “Pawnee Bill Rodeo,” Major Gordon W. Lillie appeared in the parade and the grand entry of each show. Today, the Old Fort Days Rodeo is one of the oldest in Arkansas and a premier event.

Authors in the Afternoon with Louise Rogers debuts a children’s book about nurses Louise Rogers, a Fort Smith author and retired nurse, will sign copies of her children’s book, New Nurse in Town.

This beautiful picture book, illustrated by Susan Taylor, is from the perspective of a Christian nurse in the workplace. The book is written in verse and incorporates scripture into the writing. Rogers retired from a 35-year career in nursing and continues part-time with a private duty patient. She is a co-sponsor of the yearly Nurses Prayer Breakfast, and has been a Mercy Hospital volunteer for 14 years.

She also has been a visitor to the St. Scholastica infirmary for 32 years where she enjoys poetry sessions with the retired sisters.

Honoring Those Who Died in the Line of Duty

In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers

Memorial Day and the week that it falls in as National Police Week. In coordination with this proclamation, Fort Smith National Historic Site is honoring fallen officers on Saturday, May 16.

Throughout the day, memorial markers will be on the parade grounds honoring each of the officers who lost their lives in the line of duty between 1872 and 1896 while serving the Fort Smith District Court for the Western District of Arkansas. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., interpretive programs will highlight the dangers faced by Deputy U.S. Marshals in the Indian Territory who worked out of Fort Smith. This will include a deputy marshal’s camp and living history programs about Judge and Mrs. Isaac C. Parker.

The feature of the day begins at 11 p.m. with a ceremony honoring fallen officers. This stirring program gives everyone an opportunity to honor all officers in the United States who in the words of President Kennedy, are “the men and women who, night and day, protect us through enforcement of our laws.”

National Peace Officers Memorial Day

The ceremony starts with a welcome by Sebastian County Sheriff William Hollenbeck and a roll call of the officers who died serving the Fort Smith District Court in the 1800s. The program will finish with a flag ceremony led by the Sebastian County Sheriff’s Honor Guard, a 21-gun salute and taps by the Fort Smith Police Department Honor Guard, and finished with “Amazing Grace” played on bagpipes by the Fort Smith Fire Department and Park Ranger Jeremy Lynch. Civil War Days at the Sutton Mansion: An Earlier Clayton House Chapter Learn and play at this event-filled day at the Clayton House as its earlier role as a U.S. General Hospital during the Civil War is revealed. Activities and lively presentations inside and on the grounds of the former “Sutton Mansion,” built in 1852, will provide all ages with new insights into the war as it affected Fort Smith and Arkansas. On the grounds, see soldiers from the NW 15th Arkansas Volunteer Infantry Regiment posing as Union hospital guards and as patients. Shoot a turkey, make hardtack and a handkerchief doll, try your hand at the laundress’ washboard and eat beans and cornbread cooked over an open fire. Step into the parlors for seated presentations on four subjects: “The Story of William B. Sutton” by reenactor and Chaffin Junior High history teacher Marcus Woodward and Clayton House interpreter Stephen Christian; “The Civil War in Fort Smith and Arkansas” by Ramsey Junior High history teacher David Alexander; “Battles and Skirmishes of the Area” by Fort Smith National Historic Site park ranger Cody Faber; and “Civil War Medicine: Tools and Tenacity” by Doug Kidd of Tontitown, Ark., who has researched and gathered artifacts of Civil War medicine for 35 years. Clayton House Family History Series: the Sicards Grasp a great sense of Fort Smith history with this presentation by the fifthgeneration leader of First National Bank of Fort Smith, Sam T. Sicard.

President and CEO of the bank that is one of the state’s largest, Sicard follows in footsteps reaching back to his great-great-grandfather, Samuel McLoud, and the bank’s beginning in 1872. At the bank’s founding, the U.S. Court for the Western District of Arkansas had just moved into the U.S. Army’s former barracks. Gas street lamps and mule-drawn street cars had not yet arrived. But the city, incorporated in 1842, was beginning to develop commercially.

This presentation includes photographs from the bank’s beginning and a growth, as well as its assets, services, and the personalities and leadership qualities of the Sicard generations.
