Great news for Linda – home, home, home!

Literally just as we’re going to press, Linda Seubold called from Little Rock with a wonderful report from her medical team at the UAMS Myeloma Institute for Research and Therapy – she has shown a tremendous response to chemotherapy and has had a successful collection of stem cells. She had been discharged to come home and was told to return in late April for a stem cell transplant.

Linda was exuberant and not even deterred by the surprising snow we are experiencing (Feb. 20). Her homing instincts were set for Roland, Okla., where her family is happily waiting.

We saved this space for that last-minute report. Linda also asked us to thank, with all her heart, the many friends and readers who have sent cards and gifts and who have remembered her and her entire family in their prayers.

An account has been set up at First National Bank of Fort Smith for anyone who would like to contribute to her care – the Linda Seubold Medical Fund, Account 2606524.

Once on the page, search “Linda Seubold.” Updates will be posted by her or her family and messages to her can be posted there from friends. Since her diagnosis in October, Linda is fighting multiple myeloma, a cancer of uncontrolled growth of blood plasma cells that damages and disrupts bone growth and strength.

Chemotherapy and autologous (from one’s self ) stem cell transplant, a therapy to help the body recover from aggressive chemotherapy, is her plan of treatment. Her medical team is working toward a goal of full remission of the growth of that cancer. And, as she reported today, Linda is making excellent progress toward remission and feeling much stronger and healthier. She, and we, thank all of you for your prayers and support.

In this issue – yes, we’re editorializing If you feel a strong tone of encouragement in our cover story, “Raise Your Hand,” you are correct – we’re advocating strongly on behalf of many of this area’s treasured historical, cultural and natural attractions such as the Fort Smith National Historic Site, Miss Laura’s Visitor Center, the Drennen-Scott Historic Site, the River Valley Nature Center, Clayton House and several more.

Citizen volunteers are critical to the operation of these parks and attractions that are the very face of Fort Smith’s appeal to tourists, visitors and new residents – and economic development. Tourism is a strong engine of our area’s prosperity.

Many of these organizations are working together to hold a March 9 volunteer fair to recruit new helpers. Although there is dedicated corps of citizen volunteers giving time now to

greet visitors or guide tours and drive our unique electric trolley car – there is always room for more.

As Susan Reehl, director of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program pointed out, volunteering is also good for the volunteer.

Retirement-aged volunteers live longer and stay healthier. People younger than retirement age are finding benefits in volunteering during a job search. Using your professional skills while between jobs is a positive entry on a resume.

College applicants, she noted, can burnish their applications with community service as well.

This is our home. Let’s do all we can to support the steady operation of all our best places to visit and lend a hand to sustain and grow all our cultural assets.

ort Smith and Van Buren are both award-winning volunteer communities, recognized by the state for the great participation of its citizens and the quality of the projects supported by people who generously give their time, skills and energy.

But there is always a need for fresh recruits!

In order to find and encourage new volunteers, a group of the area’s cultural, historical and natural attractions and RSVP, a clearinghouse of diverse volunteer opportunities, will hold a Volunteer Fair March 9 at the Riverfront Pavilion. Each will have a table or booth manned by recruiters who can help volunteers find a fit with a place they would enjoy supporting.

Want to drive an electric trolley car? Make an ice cream soda?

Tell the story of Judge Isaac C. Parker? Teach a child to fish?

The Volunteer Fair offers plenty of unique opportunities. The groups involved also are seeking your career expertise for administrative assistance. Skills of every kind are needed and young people are welcome. It is a great way to give back to your community and to help our whole area prosper and even grow.

“In 2012, we were pleased to see the tourism industry out perform the economy nationally and Fort Smith had the best year we have seen in years,” noted Claude Legris, executive director of the Fort Smith Convention & Visitors Bureau.

“Since Fort Smith has been recognized nationally as ‘The No. 1 True Western Town’ in America by True West Magazine, early indications show that we can again expect a very busy tourist season. Volunteers have always served as front-line ambassadors for our tourism industry, so we hope the volunteer base will grow along with the number of visitors. Showing off our town and helping visitors have a good time is the greatest job in the world!” he added.

While tourism is increasing, some local attractions such as the National Historic Site are experiencing tightened budgets.

Relatively new ones such as Fort Smith Regional Art Museum, the Chaffee Barbershop Museum and the Drennen-Scott Historic Site would like to increase the hours they can be open to visitors. Every helping hand can improve that likelihood.

MARCH 9 Fort Smith Trolley Museum With training, a volunteer at the Fort Smith Trolley Museum can become an electric trolley operator! That’s the most unique job to be offered at the Volunteer Fair. Helpers with trade skills are needed to weld, paint and do electrical repairs. Gardening work is appreciated and the museum library needs to be catalogued and shelved.

The Clayton House This historic house museum is a house for all citizens to enjoy and care for. The Victorian mansion is developing a tea guild. Volunteers may be trained in period manners and pouring from beautiful silver tea services. Administrative help would be very welcomed and simple tasks such as household cleaning, sidewalk sweeping and handyman maintenance would be appreciated. New walking tours are being developed and Sunday tour guides are invited to volunteer.

Fort Smith National Historic Site Fort Smith’s premier tourist attraction, visited by more than 70,000 people last year, trains volunteers to give tours to the public.

Volunteers also take admission and operate the gift shop. With the original fort, the courthouse, the Hell on the Border jail, the gallows and commissary building, volunteers who enjoy sharing Fort Smith’s rich history are especially needed to assist the park’s staff. Green thumb volunteers may nurture the park’s heirloom garden.

Miss Laura's Visitor Center Volunteers at Miss Laura’s, besides having the fun of being able to wink and say they work in a historic bordello, are often the first people to meet visitors to Fort Smith. They are trained to lead tours of the building, telling its colorful story, and help visitors find brochures and maps of Fort Smith and area attractions.

Fort Smith Museum of History The museum needs volunteers for a variety of jobs, including greeting visitors, giving guided tours for school groups, working in the old-fashioned soda fountain, cleaning and simple maintenance.

Also needed are research assistants, curatorial assistants and people experienced in archival work to assist the curator.

River Valley Nature Center The Nature Center offers volunteers both indoor and outdoor activities. Indoor workers may man the front desk, greet visitors or help to check out equipment. Those who love the outdoors may help with visiting school groups, conducting “critter” or insect programs and helping kids with fishing or archery. A volunteer photographer or garden workers would be welcomed, as well.

Chaffee Barbershop Museum Volunteering at the Chaffee Barbershop Museum could be a little bit patriotism and a little bit rock ‘n’ roll. Elvis Presley received his first GI haircut here so docents may meet the King’s dedicated fans.

The building also holds a fine, self-guided military history exhibit about Fort Chaffee. Volunteers are needed urgently to increase the number of days the museum can be open.

Fort Smith Regional Art Museum The recently opened RAM is seeking volunteers to work as art educators and docents, art research specialists, “mailing masters” for outreach, event-planning and staffing and general maintenance.

Drennon-Scott Historic Site Operated by UA-Fort Smith, the Drennen-Scott Historic Site Museum is a living laboratory for students but also serves as a visitor center and historical attraction. Volunteers may be trained as docents to lead public tours or give orientation talks, help with special events and living history programs. The home of Van Buren founders offers a fascinating story to entertain and educate its visitors.

RSVP The Retired Senior Volunteer Program is a clearinghouse connecting active adults 55 or older to a wide variety of volunteer opportunities. RSVP members may help children through tutoring, assist students and low-income citizens with tax preparation or seniors with their Medicare paperwork. RSVP volunteers serve in more than 100 community organizations, including schools, hospitals, community centers, museums and more. Many continue the type of work they enjoyed in their careers while others try something completely different.

A head injury, a murder and an insanity plea connect a pioneer of motion photography to early Fort Smith

n July 19, 1860, the eastbound Overland stage from San Francisco, in the 17th day of its journey, departed Ridley's Station in the Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory, after sundown to make a dash to Fort Smith.

Ridley's, or Mountain Station as it was also called, was located about 10 miles southeast of Wilburton, Okla., approximately 70 miles from Fort Smith.

The stagecoach carried seven passengers, a driver and Mr. Stout, an employee of the Overland Co. As the horses came to the brow of a mountain, the driver applied the brakes and found he had none. Out of control, the stagecoach plunged downhill, left the road and struck a large tree, disintegrating the wooden coach on impact.

A drover named McKay, returning home to Cassville, Mo., died at the scene. Everyone else aboard was seriously injured. It is not recorded how long the injured waited for help to arrive.

Three days later, the eight survivors arrived in Fort Smith at 10:30 a.m., according to a New York Times article. The newspaper story said it had received the information via the new telegraph line that had begun operating just a few days before from an office on North 2nd Street.

injuries, a severe cut on his face and his nose was flattened. Other passengers, after being attended by local doctors, would wait at John Rogers’ hotel for the next stage. One passenger had been unconscious since the moment of the accident.

The unconscious man is the focus of this story. Assuming he had talked with his fellow passengers, they might have been able to tell the doctor that he was a 30-year-old Englishman who operated a successful book store in San Francisco.

Though he was born Edward James Muggeridge, by 1860 he was calling himself Edward Muygridge. Having missed a boat in San Francisco, Muygridge chose to make a 25-day stagecoach trip across the country to New York. His intention was to return to England to purchase antiquarian books, which sold well on the West Coast.

It is not known how many days Muygridge lay unconscious in Fort Smith.

But he later said he woke up with no memory of the accident, suffering from confusion and double vision and continued to suffer spells or seizures for a long time.

A fellow passenger related that just before the stagecoach struck the tree, Muygridge had pulled out his pocketknife and was attempting to cut open the canvas covering the rear of the stage in order to make his

escape. When the stagecoach struck the tree, it threw Muygridge headlong into a large boulder, resulting in a small cut on the top of his head.

It is thought that Muygridge remained in Fort Smith for three months before he was able to travel to St. Louis for more medical treatment. From there, he took a train to New York where a prominent doctor told him he was permanently injured.

Muygridge returned to England where Sir William Gull, the queen's personal physician, attended him. Not much is known about the next five years of his life.

In 1866, Muygridge returned to San Francisco and took up photography under another new name, Eadweard J. Muybridge.

His first success was photographing the grand mansions going up in San Francisco.

At that time, he adopted yet another name, Helios, and fashioned a mobile photography wagon he christened the Flying Studio.

In 1867, he drove the Flying Studio into the Yosemite Valley, taking a series of photographs that would illustrate an 1868 book titled Yosemite: Its Wonders and Its Beauties. It was his first taste of fame, but more would come. He was proclaimed to be the nation's leading photographer of scenic spaces, lighthouses and military installations.

OTHER DAYS The 1860 stagecoach wreck and the unconscious stranger brought to Fort Smith probably wouldn't be remembered today except for three things that would happen in the life of Muybridge.

In 1872, at the age of 42, he married a recently divorced 21-year-old woman named Flora Stone. The same year, former California Gov. Leland Stanford, whose first love was horses, got into an argument with another rich member of the horsey set over the way horses propel themselves down a racetrack. Stanford bet his friend $25,000 that a horse will, at some point during a trot or gallop, have all four feet off the ground. He turned to his photographer friend, Muybridge, to figure out how to prove his point and win the bet.

After much experimentation and with a pile of Stanford's money, Muybridge set up a series of 12 cameras fitted with fast lenses of his own invention. In May 1872, he photographed Stanford's horse, Occident, trotting past the bank of cameras. The horse’s chest broke thin strings stretched across the track, which tripped the cameras’ shutters.

These first 12, rather crude images proved a horse does, indeed, lift all four feet off the ground as it runs. Stanford won his bet and a seed for a new kind of motion photography was planted in the mind of Muybridge.

The third event in his life and the reason his small connection to Fort Smith is remembered today is because in 1874, Muybridge murdered handsome Harry Larkyns, his wife's lover and possibly the father of the child she was carrying.

A maid had shown him love letters between his wife and Larkyns and a photograph of his newborn son with the inscription “Little Harry” written on the back in his wife's handwriting.

Muybridge located Larkyns at a mining camp outside Calistoga, Calif. He greeted Larkyns by saying, “Good evening, Major.

My name is Muybridge. Here is the answer to the message you sent my wife.” He then shot Larkyns dead, turned over his weapon to the men in the mine shack and calmly awaited his fate.

He was held in a Napa jail for three months until trial in February 1875. His lawyers at first attempted to use the 1860

The device for projection Muybridge invented was named the Zoopraxiscope, which spun the images on a disk. He gave public showings of animated photographs and illustrations.

stagecoach accident as proof in an insanity plea. For several days, Muybridge recalled that event and his stay in Fort Smith as friends testified he was a different person after the accident – nervous, moody, prone to odd ideas and instant rages. In the end, the insanity plea was dropped but Muybridge was acquitted due to the abundant evidence of Larkyns’ guilt in seducing Flora, who died a fallen woman later that year at 24.

After his acquittal, Muybridge took a long tour photographing South America. He returned to the States and continued his experiments in motion photography, making many studies of animals in motion. He toured major cities, giving demonstrations

with a primitive projector of his own design he named a Zoopraxiscope.

Today, Thomas Edison is known as the Father of Motion Pictures, but because of Eadweard Muybridge’s earlier work on motion photography, he's known as a Godfather of Motion Pictures.

Muybridge left the United States in 1894 and died in the city of his birth, Kingston upon Thames, on May 8, 1904.

old rain slides down the 20-foot windows as the fireplace crackles and warms the great room of the Rudy, Ark., home of Ralph and Cheryl Baker. Ralph lounges in a large leather chair and slowly sips his martini as he follows the long trek of the rain drops. His latest creation sails atop of the massive fireplace mantel, Flying Lady II. When he’s asked to explain why he would build a replica of a craft he had already built many years ago in real life, Baker answers in a “once upon a time voice,” lowered almost to a whisper.

“That boat represents adventure that few will ever know. I see Cheryl at the helm in the night during a gale. I see the morning sun break on the tedious horizon, native islanders running to the shore to greet us, sitting in their huts. We eat their food with our fingers and not understanding a word they spoke, and not really needing to. The boat had to exist – it symbolizes the realness of our journey.”

It’s a mystery, that a farm boy should hear the call of the sea – a call that would last 45 years and beckon Ralph Baker from Branch, Ark., to Alaska, back to the University of Arkansas’ School of Architecture and then to Fort Smith where he began a successful architectural design career.

The call grew louder when Ralph and Cheryl bought a ready-made 18-foot sail boat and started sailing the white caps of Oklahoma’s Kerr Reservoir. Because of Ralph’s insatiable urge to build, they soon began building their own vessel, the 26-foot Least Tern. Sailing and the call of sea had set its hooks. They closed shop in Fort Smith and shipped the Least Tern to Seattle, Wash.

On the big water, Least Tern proved less than adequate for serious ocean sailing. Survival became a serious consideration, so they decided to sell that craft and begin building something more substantial.

In order to finance the venture, Ralph worked as an architect and Cheryl, an RN, worked as a hospital nurse. With the money from the sale of the Least Tern and their paychecks, two years later they christened the Flying Lady. From bow sprit to stern, she was a 49-foot, gaff-rigged ketch flying with an ambitious 92 square yards of sail.

They commissioned Nick Benton, one of America’s most skilled riggers, to help with the very complicated rigging. Every part of a traditionally wood-built sailor (sail boat) has a purpose; there are no unessential elements on a sea-worthy boat.

From Seattle the Bakers sailed. With salt spray in their faces, they tacked down the West Coast, south to San Francisco, all the while keeping land within spyglass distance. Finally, feeling their sea legs, Ralph and Cheryl hugged and with a big confident gulp, they turned the Flying Lady west and set sail for Hawaii. They originally had planned to sail back to San Francisco, but after experiencing Hawaii’s tropical beauty, Ralph said, “Cheryl, we’re in paradise, forget San Francisco.” They stocked the boat’s lauder and set sail for the South Seas. They would not return for 15 years.

There were many adventures during their odyssey; dropping anchor at many South Sea islands, and countries, principally, Japan and China. They explored Jarvis Island, the island that some say was where the aviatrix Amelia Earhart mysteriously crashed and disappeared. They spent seven years in Okinawa, Japan, where Ralph worked as chief architect of military installations.

Today, Ralph and Cheryl are permanently docked and live north of Rudy on 27 acres they’ve named “Long Shadows,” in a home Ralph designed to fit organically into the wooded, sloped site. It reaches out to nature through tall windows and a series of decks that descend through the trees to a tranquil pond.

Their faces no longer glisten with sea spray, the sea no longer rises beneath, but the sea is still in the heart of a farm boy from Branch. When he recently decided to build an model of Flying Lady II, it became a 500hour work of skill – and expletives. Ralph is a perfectionist by nature and often says, “That isn’t right; we’ll have to do it again.”

He is a builder and, in his 80th year, is still building. He was bent on creating an exact replica. The miniature bunks, galley and chart table can be seen through the deck hatches. Though it can’t been seen, he even included the ribbing across the hull inside the boat. Flying Lady II is a boat that Lilliputians would have been proud to sail.

When asked what was the most difficult part to replicate, Captain Baker (a certified Merchant Marine captain) replied, “Without a doubt the rigging. It’s very intricate and a helluva a lot of it.” He smiled and added, “Tying those little knots can drive you nuts. I had to cuss like sailor to get it done.”

olks who watched the late Jim Grizzle play football first at Northside High School, then for the University of Arkansas, could tell he was a player and a man who accomplished what he wanted to do. Grizzle played as a Razorback defensive end from 1961 to 1963.

“After his last game as a Razorback, he got into his already packed car and headed to Fort Smith to open his own tire shop,” explained Laura Webb, Grizzle’s daughter. Her brother, Brian, and their mother, Pat, continue to operate the business after Jim passed away last year.

Jim Grizzle Tire Co. opened May 12, 1963, celebrating a half-century in business this year.

From the beginning, Grizzle knew what he wanted. Starting as a recap facility, Grizzle expanded his shop into a large tire and automotive shop in the early 1970s. The Grizzle Tire location at 3002 Towson Avenue now operates from nine service bays and three alignment bays.

In 1999, Grizzle opened a second location – at 1610 North 7th Street in Van Buren, with seven service bays and one alignment bay. Both locations have the latest equipment and a dedicated staff ready to get customers and their vehicles safely back on the road.

Grizzle Tire locations have, or can order, any tire a customer may need. The stores carry Firestone, Bridgestone, Michelin and BF

Goodrich Tires on-site. Special orders for tires and wheels for cars and SUV/trucks also are welcome. A large display room is filled with tire and wheel options and experienced staff can help customers make the right choices.

A inviting waiting area is furnished with large, comfortable sofas and chairs. Self-serve coffee, magazines and a television to watch will help pass the time but, most likely, customers end up visiting with one or more of the friendly staff, many who have a tenure surpassing 20 years.

Mary Heard, the office manager of the Towson Avenue location, has been with the company for more than 30 years.

“People come in and you get to know them,” Heard said. “They walk through the door and call you by name and you do the same to them. You learn about their lives and watch their families grow. Working here doesn’t feel like work. We’re like a family.”

Grizzle Tire extends its menu of services to a convenient website. Helpful information about products and services can be found, as well as information about vehicle problems – from batteries to brakes and electrical systems.

A Vehicle Fitment Guide, easily located on the home page, gives customers a chance to see what wheels and tires best fit their vehicle and have the option of requesting a quote.

It’s spring when they say so! The Arkansas River Valley Lawn & Garden Show, presented by the Master Gardeners, offers three days indoor spring dreams, regardless of the weather outside.

Talks and advice on gardening from distinguished garden educators, a marketplace of living plants and gardening products and beautiful floral displays from local garden clubs, home gardeners and nature photographers will fill the Fort Smith Convention Center. The theme for the 2013 show is “Gardening: For the Health of It.” Several of the speakers are concentrating on home gardening for food.

Educating the public about gardening, landscaping and other horticulture topics is the primary purpose the volunteer Master Gardeners, organized under the University of Arkansas Agricultural Extension Service.

The show also features the Fort Smith Council of Garden Clubs' annual flower show and an exhibit of the Fort Smith Art Center Photo Alliance's lawn and garden photography contest. A professional florist design contest returns this year. Expect a spectacle of artfully designed tabletop arrangements by highly competitive floral designers.

A children's area offers kids several gardening crafts in a "Make and Take" area. Children may choose from rock painting, making seed balls, making plastic bottle planters, bug-themed plant stakes and handmade bird feeders, all to take home and enjoy or give as a gift.

The many vendor booths give attendees the opportunity to meet local experts on landscaping, plant care, designing outdoor living spaces and the newest and best gardening products.

In the hopes of bright, warm afternoons, I'm sharing some fun Easter treats. Enjoy!!

Check out Kristan’s blog at confessionsofacookbookqueen.com COCONUT CREAM SUGAR COOKIES Cookies: 3 cups flour 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 teaspoon baking soda 2 sticks salted butter, softened 2 eggs 13⁄4 cups granulated sugar 1/4 cup packed brown sugar Sanding sugar Frosting: 1/2 cup shortening 1/2 cup butter 1/4 cup Cream of Coconut (You can find this with the drink mixer ingredients – it's what you use to make pina coladas.)

3 cups powdered sugar 1 cup sweetened, shredded coconut Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a large bowl, combine flour and baking soda. Set aside.

In the bowl of a mixer, beat butter and both sugars on medium for about a minute, until pale and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, then

vanilla. Reduce mixer speed to low and slowly add flour mixture until completely mixed in.

Scoop dough with a small cookie scoop onto ungreased cookie sheets.

Flatten slightly and sprinkle with sanding sugar.

Bake cookies for about 15 minutes, until edges turn golden brown.

Remove cookies to wire racks to cool.

Make frosting: In the bowl of a mixer, beat butter and shortening on medium speed until smooth and combined. Add Cream of Coconut, then add powdered sugar, a little at a time on low speed. Once the powdered sugar is mixed in, add shredded coconut and increase mixer speed to high.

Beat for a minute, until light and fluffy. If frosting is too thick, add water, a tablespoon at a time until the consistency you want is reached.

1 shot glass of raspberry drink syrup Cold club soda Splash of half and half Crushed ice Whipped cream Cherries Pour ingredients into an ice-filled shaker. Shake and strain into shot glasses. Garnish with cherries and whipped cream. Makes 4 large shots.

121⁄2 pint canning jars Carrot cake, baked and cooled (I used Duncan Hines Decadent Carrot Cake Mix, baked in two 9-inch round pans.)

Mousse: 8 oz. cream cheese, softened 1/3 cup orange juice 1/2 cup powdered sugar 8 oz. Cool Whip Frosting: 8 oz. cream cheese, softened 1 stick butter, softened 1 teaspoon vanilla 4 cups powdered sugar Chopped pecans Maraschino cherries Prepare Mousse: In the bowl of a mixer, whip cream cheese with the whip attachment until smooth. Add orange juice and whip until combined. With mixer on low, add powdered sugar. Once powdered sugar is mixed in, increase speed to medium high and beat until smooth. Fold in Cool Whip until completely mixed in.

Refrigerate.

Prepare Frosting: In the bowl of a mixer, beat cream cheese and butter until combined. Add vanilla and powdered sugar and beat on low until just combined.

Increase speed to medium high and beat for about a minute, until frosting is smooth, light and fluffy.

Use a round cookie cutter or the mouth of the jar to cut cake into circles that fit in the jars. Pipe or spoon a layer of mousse into the bottom of each jar. Carefully press a cake circle on top and finish by piping or spooning frosting on top of that. Add a cherry and sprinkle with chopped pecans.

Place a lid on each jar and chill until ready to serve.

Family Fun at Spiro Mounds Vernal Equinox Walks and Kite Flight Day

March 16 Spiro Mounds Family Kite Flight Day Celebrate spring by flying kites at the 26th annual Family Kite Flite Day. Each year, more than 600 people bring lawn chairs, blankets, kids and kites and fly the winds along with fancier kites flown by “professional” kiters. Demonstrations by kiters from Oklahoma and Arkansas will include stunt kites, parafoils and other fancy kites. Donated kites will be given away by drawing throughout the day. Along with the kite flying, younger kids can have fun in the children's area. There will be a sandbox where children can dig in the sand for shells, jewels, coins and even a special token that can be turned in for a kite. Take the entire family and your own kites, or local Scouts will help you make one. Food vendors, arts and crafts vendors and Native American artists will offer their wares. Free, donations accepted. 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

The park interpretation center has astonishing artifacts recovered from the mounds and dioramas of life of the ancient Spiro culture.

March 20-21 Spiro Mounds Vernal Equinox Walks These special guided tours are offered at Oklahoma's only prehistoric Native American archaeological site open to the public. The Spiro Mounds are one of the most important Native American sites in the nation. The prehistoric Spiro people created a sophisticated culture and a great city that influenced the entire Southeast.

The protected site includes 150 acres that encompass 12 mounds, the elite village area and part of the support city. Each tour will be one mile of easy walking and about two hours in duration. Dress suitably.

Archaeologist Dennis Peterson will tell about the powerful Caddoans who created the mounds between 900-1450 A.D., how they became a very important leadership group, the excavations that took place here and why some of the mounds line up to solstice and equinox sunsets.

Portraits on exhibit at Fort Smith Regional Art Museum through March 17 Mona Lisa’s Daughters On loan from the Arkansas Arts Center in Little Rock, this exhibit explores female portraiture through the ages since Leonardo da Vinci created the “Mona Lisa.” Works included in the exhibition span from the 16th-21st centuries and include 31 famed artists such as Milton Avery, Will Barnett, Chuck Close, Naomi Fisher, Norman Rockwell, Byron Browne and Alex Katz.

The 32 works on display include various media such as oil, charcoal on paper, pastel on paper, ink on paper, and silkscreen.

The bridal wing, located on the second floor, has a private area where the bride and her party can relax and dress. Catholic Schools join for Celts 'N Kilts Highland Games, Irish dance, food and music to fill festival

T

he Celts 'N Kilts Irish Festival is a day of Highland games, food and fun – presented by Fort Smith's four Catholic schools and Mercy Hospital. Everyone is welcome to form their own clan to complete in (simplified) Highland games or enjoy games for kids with fun and surprises.

A cross country 5K race will be held on the beautiful grounds of Trinity Junior High and St. Scholastica Monastery. Register by March 9 to receive a T-shirt. Opening ceremonies at 10 a.m. will be followed by 10:15 a.m. clan introductions. The race begins at 10:30 a.m.

Highland games begin at 10:30 a.m. and include a caber toss, weight throw and sheep throw. The 11:30 a.m. games finale is a wagon push. Irish music and dance will provide spirited entertainment from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The McCafferty School of Irish Dance will perform and the Fort Smith Firefighters Pipe & Drum Corp will play the bagpipes. A vendor fair will offer handmade goods such as jewelry, pottery, soaps, baked goods and jams and jellies. The food also will be traditional – Irish corned beef sandwiches, bangers and mash, chicken and chips for the little ones and great desserts.

New data from the UK suggests that the incidence of prostate cancer will only continue to rise as the population grows older and lives longer. The prediction is that one in seven boys born in 2015 will develop prostate cancer as opposed to twenty years ago when the statistics were one in twenty. More data from the UK reports that the death rate from prostate cancer has dropped almost 20% over the past 20 years. This reduction is most likely from improved treatments and early detection.

The most precise treatment with the fewer side effects is IMRT (Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy) with daily use of a BATCAM (ultrasound localization and positioning system). “Using the same technology that urologists do to visualize the prostate is logical. The BATCAM ultrasound system not only looks at the prostate position every day but also takes into consideration the position of the bladder and rectum,” said Kim Vann, Certified Medical Dosimetrist. The technology used at FSRO provides the least invasive and most comfortable treatment for prostate cancer patients in the River Valley.

With regard to early detection, most men do not have easy access to screening. Because giving back to the community is very important to FSRO, Dr. Kris Gast and the staff of Fort Smith Radiation Oncology want to help our area by providing free PSA blood tests and exams once a month. The hope is that this service will allow the men of the River Valley the flexibility and the convenience of receiving proper screening to help them live long and healthy lives.

TrailBlazers Hiking Club is on the move in March Friendly club invites anyone to come along

They’re going for a walk – several, in fact – and the Trailblazers Hiking Club has always invited other people to come along. The month of March includes a hike almost every weekend and a general meeting March 25, so it’s a good time to join.

Members are happy to share their experiences with new folks and bulletins describe the difficulty level of each hike beforehand. The allvolunteer club is open to anyone who can safely manage a hike, but the club is in no way responsible for seeing to the safety to any hikers.

Club leaders urge hikers to know their limits, take precaution and avoid risky behavior on the trail that could endanger anyone.

Band Camp or Bust II Northside Jazz Band presents a show with swingin’ music and special guest artists Elite musicians of the Northside High School Jazz band, including allstate and all-region players, will give a jazz concert March 12 at UAFS Second Street Live.

This show is unusual for a high school band group, held off-campus at a live music venue used for professional concerts. It follows last year’s successful “Band Camp or Bust” show, which succeeded in raising enough funds to send 68 NHS students to summer band camp. This year’s goal is to send 75 students for the summer instruction and fun.

Last year’s concert was a hit with audiences and the musicians alike. The crowd took great pleasure in hearing a full concert by the talented jazz band, which usually only performs a few short numbers at the full band’s two formal concerts.

The student performers, according to their director Adam Coats, “felt like they had won the World Series. They were very excited.”

In order to play in the jazz band, students practice and rehearse after school, on their own time, with Northside’s assistant band director Coats.

As he explained, jazz calls for solos and improvisation and is a different style of music than the full band’s marching music or symphonic scores.

A few musicians switch from their regular instruments to add electric guitar, bass and keyboards to the ensemble. Jazz stretches the players’ abilities and presents an opportunity to play with color and emotion.

Head band director Gordon Manley and the full band will support the jazz band concert by working as the support crew, taking donations at the door, serving refreshments and working backstage to transport instruments and equipment. All band students are eligible to benefit from the band camp scholarship money raised by the jazz show.

Coats said the show will include about 10 numbers, including charts by John Coltrane, Dave Brubeck, Cannonball Adderly and Herbie Hancock, to name a few. The program will include two numbers with student vocalists. “We’ve never done that before,” he noted. A featured rock number is being kept secret until the performance. Audiences will recognize the classic, which may sample some other rock hits in the arrangement, Coats said.

About 30 performers are rehearsing for the show, including a full rhythm section, saxophones, trumpets, trombones and both electric and upright bass. Half or more of the jazz band played in last year’s show as juniors and sophomores and hope to meet or top that great performance, Coats said.

The audience will also be entertained by actors who auditioned to be in a small troupe performing during the program. During intermission, some alumni guest artists have been invited to perform.

Weekly dances, a midnight radio show and a daily noon-hour program were played by Wills during what are remembered as his “glory years.”

KIDS calendar of event Young Actor’s Guild to hold auditions for Summer Production of Big, The Musical

uditions will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. March 10 for the opportunity to participate in the Young Actors Guild’s 2013 summer production. This year, YAG presents “Big, The Musical.” the musical Some 75 young people will be accepted to the intensive theater program. “Big” will be staged June 13-16 at the Alma Performing Arts Center.

Acceptance to a YAG production is exciting for several reasons: the nonprofit group is known for ambitious and impressive quality of productions such as 2012’s Les Miserable. It’s also exciting because participation is free to the young actors and stage crew. Being in a YAG play requires a commitment to a busy rehearsal schedule on the part of parents, but through grants, donations and ticket sales to their acclaimed performances, YAG actors pay no participation fees or costume charges.

“It’s an educational process as well as the chance to be part of an amazing production,” said Missy Gipson, executive director of YAG. “Whether they go on in theater or not, there are so many benefits that come out of it. They will learn selfesteem and teamwork – it can be a life-changing experience.”

No experience is necessary to audition. Young actors should prepare to sing a short song without accompaniment and read from a script.

“Pick a song that fits your range, fits your voice,” Gipson suggested. “We are looking for a singer to connect with a song. We don’t always cast the best singer – it’s about who can connect,” she said. “In a musical, singing is an opportunity to act.” It is not necessary to sing a song from a musical, she explained. “It could be a church song or a pop song, as long as it shows you.”

Through rehearsals, even first-time actors will be taught to sing and dance.

“Everybody will rise to the occasion,” Gipson said.

YAG seeks to show its members the many facets of theater, not only what happens onstage. Shows include student crews who perform critical backstage tech and stage management and all the participants become aware of the teamwork required.

YAG also tries to expose the young cast to professional mentors and teachers. The cast of “Les Mis” experienced a day-long master class with Gary Morris, who originated the of the musical’s roles on Broadway.

Later in the year, YAG also will present “Freckleface Strawberry,” a musical for the junior music theater conservatory. Several master classes and theater labs in subjects such as directing and scene design will be presented in the upcoming year, Gipson said.

Leading Watercolorists Exhibit at UAFS One of the most anticipated of the Arkansas Art Center’s annual exhibitions, the Mid-Southern Watercolorists, begins with an opening reception from 5-6 p.m. The reception, sponsored by the UA-Fort APRIL Smith Chancellor’s Coalition for the Visual Arts, will be held in in the west hallway of the Smith-Pendergraft Campus Center. The juried exhibition includes 21 watercolors from members of the MidSouthern Watercolorists, depicting various approaches to the watercolor medium.

Works by some area artists, including L.S. Eldridge of Rogers, Victor Parkerson of Fayetteville and Jason Sacran of Lavaca, are among the exhibition. The MidSouthern Watercolorists organization is a non-profit organization includes 250 members in 17 states. Exhibit hours are 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Fridays. The exhibit at UAFS is one of several traveling exhibitions available through the State Services Department of the Arkansas Arts Center. Free.

Jane Hartfield uses a variety of fibers (fabric, yarn, paper, metal mesh and thread) and color to create what she terms “Layers of Joy.” The textures offer a wonderful tactile experience. Although she has not had APRIL formal art training, she has taken classes from many quilt teachers and artists and has learned and used numerous techniques for working with fiber in its many forms. She has sewn garments and costumes, embroidered, knitted, crocheted and quilted. Now she dyes fabrics and yarns; combines quilting and machine embroidery; embellishes with beads, shells and metal to produce original wall hangings. After a career in nursing and working for the Sparks Guild volunteer organization, Hartfield, who lives in Fort Smith, began working as a full time fiber artist. March 1-17 RAM Exhibit: The Secrets of Mona Lisa Fort Smith Regional Art Museum’s inaugural exhibit continues. An interpretive exhibit offers a scientific and interpretive examination of da Vinci’s painting “Mona Lisa,” one of art history’s most famous faces. Using a multispectral digital camera, French scientist and art expert Pascal Cotte has digitally restored the more than 500-year-old oil painting to its original colors.

Many detailed enlargements of sections of “Mona Lisa” show the artist’s original color intentions and illuminate the repairs made to it after attempts to vandalize the masterpiece. Twenty-five “secrets” of the painting are revealed by Cotte’s digital detective work.

March 6 UAFS Criminal Justice Symposium: Eli M. Rosenbaum, Prosecutor of Nazis Eli M. Rosenbaum, longest-serving prosecutor and investigator of Nazi criminals and other perpetrators of human rights violations for the U.S. Department of Justice, will give two talks. Rosenbaum will speak about current efforts of the DOJ to track down individuals who are thought to have committed war crimes and human rights violations. Execution Anniversary Program: Cherokee Bill MARCH In 1894, deputy marshals arrested Crawford Goldsby, alias Cherokee

Bill, for the murder of Earnest Melton in Indian Territory. After standing trial, he was found guilty of murder and Judge Parker sentenced him “to be hanged by the neck until you are dead” at the gallows. Though the Supreme Court was considering an appeal of his case, Goldsby attempted to escape. The unsuccessful escape attempt ended with jail guard Lawrence Keating murdered. To ensure that Goldsby would receive the death penalty, the Fort Smith Federal Court tried Goldsby for the murder of Keating just in case the Supreme Court did not uphold the previous decision. However, the first case did not receive an appeal and Goldsby paid the ultimate price for Melton’s murder. The program will take the visitor through the jail where Cherokee Bill attempted to escape and end outside at the reconstructed gallows where he spent the last moments of his life.

The mounds are one of the most important Native American sites in the nation. The prehistoric Spiro people created a sophisticated culture that influenced the entire Southeast. Today, the Spiro Mounds site and artifacts are among Oklahoma’s richest cultural resources. The protected site included 150 acres that encompass 12 mounds, the elite village

area and part of the support city. Each tour will be one mile of easy walking and about two hours in duration.

B. Anthony: The Friendship That Changed the World will be the first subject of the Clayton House museum’s new book club, Knox Street Book Club. Knox Street is the former name of 6th Street on which the historic house museum is found. Fort Smith resident Sheryl Flanagin, who recently visited the historic homes of pioneering suffragettes, including Anthony’s, while on the Women’s Rights Historic Bus Tour in New York, will lead the discussion of this book that examines the lives and friendship of these two 19th century leaders. “I have long been interested in women’s rights, which are, of course, human rights,” Flanagin said. “Penny Colman, the author, brings to life the remarkable story of this 50-year-long friendship that did, in fact, change the world.

When Stanton and Anthony met in 1851 in Seneca Falls, it is has been said that ‘lightning bolts came out of the sky.’” The book was written with young adults, even teenagers, in mind, but Flanagin says everyone her age who has read it also enjoyed it. Flanagin taught high school English for 30 years. A member of Zonta International, which works to advance the status of women worldwide through service and advocacy, Flanagin serves as a district advocacy chairman. The Clayton House will provide the books; reservations are suggested by March 1. At the first session, March 21, books will be distributed and Flanagin will provide an introduction. The following two sessions, April 4 and April 11, will provide time for book discussion. Just to reach the dining room, customers pass a beautiful, lighted shrine to a seductive selection of pies, their whipped toppings fluffed into dreamy clouds, drizzled with syrups and garnished with fruit, nuts or chocolate.

Then there’s a table tent display with a distractingly alluring bevy of pie flavors. It’s so inviting to flip through just to see the many choices.

“We now know that some people schedule their doctor’s appointment around it,” she smiled. Village Inn is located near Mercy Fort Smith hospital and many medical offices.

By the slice or by whole-pie takeout, pie is definitely the diva of the Village Inn menu.

From its origins as a pancake house, breakfast choices also are a strong favorite here. Available all day, the breakfast menu starts with your choice of four items from more than 30 options for a custom order of eggs, bacon, fruit, oatmeal, low-fat yogurt, pancakes, granola, grits, crepes, French toast or hash browns, to name a few.

Choose from “scrambles” topped egg Benedict style with creamy Hollandaise sauce. Or enjoy a long-time Village Inn specialty, a grilled “Skillet Meal.” A bed of cubed country potatoes can be topped with fresh eggs any style and comes with bacon, sausage and ham with green pepper, mushrooms and cheese or with chicken-fried steak. A Garden skillet is seasoned potatoes, peppers, onions and mushrooms combined with broccoli and tomatoes, topped with Monterey Jack and cheddar cheeses. Skillet meals come with a stack of fresh pancakes.

A new variety of fire-roasted potato skillets has been created, with a potato medley of russets, reds and sweet potatoes with Philly Steak, Dublin Corned or “Big Country” toppings.

As much as it is traditionally identified with breakfast, Village Inn’s menu has as many lunch and dinner entrees with a similar offering of combinations the diner can choose from to build a custom combo.

New “Lunch My Way” combos offer sandwiches on a variety of fresh breads, including grilled flatbreads. These sandwich orders are fresh or grilled and come with sandwich, salad or soup for under $9. Exotic new creations like a Cuban pulled pork and ham filling sandwich or a tomato basil as a vegetarian choice are an example of the lunch combo variety.

With its very friendly staff, Village Inn has gained a following of regular customers and an atmosphere that feels like a hometown restaurant. It is able to handle a whole ball team and their parents after a late-night game and has a growing number of UAFS students who come in for the free WiFi and convenient electrical outlets, essential for homework with coffee.

“We really do try to build relationships with our customers,” said White. “Many of them we know and can call each other by name.” The staff anticipates a party of retired schoolteachers, several church groups and some frequent patrons from the 188th Air Guard base nearby.
