Making a difference After the catch-up turmoil that was 2022, our industry was finally able to organize a ‘normal’ festival season in 2023. It went smooth, but was not without its share of challenges. We’ve experienced them all. From extreme weather conditions, the ever-increasing costs, and some unfortunate tragic incidents. At the same time, we had a lot of fun, success and were above all very busy.
The focus was primarily on delivering quality, making a difference, and finally taking that significant step forward. We could once again build, instead of merely reacting to situations. For 2024 every festivalorganizer is asking: how do we create a sustainable model for our event? We hope that this guide can lend you a helping hand in answering that question!

Although we’ve strived to list as many events as we could, the festival world remains a very dynamic one. Before we dive into the word of live entertainment, we would like to thank all the participating festivals and advertisers. ‘ MUZIEKMAKERS LOPEN BIZARRE HOEVEELHEDEN GELD MIS OMDAT ZE HUN SETLIST-ADMINISTRATIE NIET OP ORDE HEBBEN’ De registratie van een setlist kan voor sommige uitvoerend muzikanten en dj’s aanvoelen als een overtollige administratieve handeling. Maar het is tegenwoordig echt een handeling van niets en het levert heel veel op. Loren Nine, singer-songwriter en componist, kan daar over meepraten. “Ik stond versteld toen ik zag hoeveel geld er door die eenvoudige handeling binnenkwam!”
L
oren Nine Geerts timmert als Loren Nine al geruime tijd aan de weg. Als singer-songwriter (bekend van onder meer het met goud bekroonde ‘Who Needs You’), maar ook als componist voor diverse commercials, producers en (hardcore) dj’s. Zij is al jaren een fanatiek pleitbezorger voor het goed administreren van een setlist. “Het verhaal is eigenlijk simpel. Door dit goed te doen, ontstaan er geldstromen die de hele industrie ten goede komen.” Dat snelle klusje levert veel geld op Loren heeft het effect hiervan aan den lijve ondervonden toen ze als voorprogramma van Caro Emerald in Engeland optrad. “Na ieder optreden kwam tourmanager Tim van der Does met een formulier waarop ik mijn setlist moest invullen. In alle eerlijkheid vond ik het maar gedoe, maar hij hamerde op het belang ervan. Het heeft best even geduurd voordat ik er routine in kreeg, maar het is feitelijk een klusje van een minuut of vijf maximaal. Als je elke avond ongeveer dezelfde set speelt, kost het je nog maar een minuutje. Toen later de

uitbetaling volgde van BumaStemra, stond ik versteld. De hele tour was direct uit de kosten én ik hield nog wat over!” In genoemd voorbeeld moet gezegd worden dat het om grote zalen ging, maar Loren Nine benadrukt dat het zeker ook goed geld oplevert als je in kleinere zaaltjes optreedt. “Veel artiesten zijn in eerste instantie kunstenaars. Zij willen creëren en optreden, niet bezig zijn met administratie. Begrijpelijk, maar het is toch mooi dat je juist op deze manier jezelf nog beter jezelf kunt onderhouden? Het duurt uiteraard even voor BumaStemra het verwerkt heeft en er geld binnenkomt. Daarom adviseer ik iedereen om goed de vinger aan de pols te houden bij je uitgevers. Creatief zijn is geweldig, maar als je serieus bent moet je het vak ook een beetje als bedrijf benaderen. Je bent je eigen CEO.” Streven naar 1-op-1 uitkering Hannah de Maat, Manager Licenties Events bij BumaStemra, voegt toe dat er bij BumaStemra steeds meer wordt onderzocht hoe het meest efficiënt een 1-op-1 uitkering is te regelen. “Zo maken we in dit

specifieke geval gebruik van webcrawlers die alle plekken in kaart brengen waar live muziek wordt gebracht, variërend van festivals en zalen tot carnavalsoptochten. Speellijsten en setlists zijn een belangrijk onderdeel, omdat we zo heel specifiek per liedje kunnen nagaan welke leden daaraan hebben bijgedragen en zo de inkomsten steeds secuurder kunnen uitbetalen. We willen daarvoor werken met de kanalen die voor optredende artiesten – die hun setlists aan moeten leveren – het beste werken. Op veel dancefestivals werken we inmiddels met zogenoemde ‘fingerprinting’-technologie, die het proces automatiseert. Voor live artiesten is er bijvoorbeeld een app beschikbaar die het invullen en doorgeven echt heel laagdrempelig maakt en we hebben recent een nieuw MBS [Mijn BumaStemra – red.] portal geopend. Door de drempel zo laag mogelijk te maken, willen we de inkomsten voor de auteurs optimaliseren.” Bewustwording “En dat is echt heel belangrijk”, voegt Loren Nine toe. “Ik noemde net mijn eigen optredens, maar het gros van mijn werk wordt door anderen uitgevoerd of gedraaid in

dj-sets. Zo zijn er met mij heel veel songwriters wiens werk door anderen wordt uitgevoerd of gedraaid. Dat betekent ook dat wij als beroepsgroep enorm afhankelijk zijn van hoe die optredende artiesten hun administratie regelen. Juist omdat ik ook als optredend artiest actief ben, heb ik gemerkt hoe makkelijk het is en wat het op kan leveren. Daarom hamer ik er zo op. Het is regelmatig nog een gebrek aan kennis. Dan krijg ik te horen ‘De zaal geeft de setlist toch door?’ Waarna ik antwoord: ‘Hoe weet de zaal nu wat jij speelt?’ Je ziet ook in de dj-wereld dat die bewustwording er niet altijd is dat er mensen zijn die het werk schrijven dat ze draaien. Muziekmakers lopen bizarre hoeveelheden geld mis omdat ze hun setlist-administratie niet op orde hebben. Dat is ongelooflijk zonde. Zeker in een wereld waarin er steeds meer wordt gewerkt met verschillende auteurs per track en diverse verdeelsleutels, ben je als optredend artiest ook gewoon verantwoordelijk voor de inkomsten van die mensen. Gelukkig begint dat besef steeds meer te leven en het is ook gewoon echt makkelijk. Zorg dat die setlist na elke gig in orde is, het levert iedere betrokkene veel op!”

De ontwikkelingen rondom crowd management en beveiliging bij festivals, evenementen en sportwedstrijden staan nooit stil. Personeelstekort enerzijds en technologische innovaties anderzijds dwingen de markt tot slimme oplossingen. We zetten de belangrijkste trends in de branche op een rij. DOOR: JAN MEIJROOS

et gebruik van nieuwe technologieën wordt steeds belangrijker voor de beveiliging van grote evenementen. Datagedreven benaderingen, waaronder het gebruik van bewakingscamera’s, videoanalyse-technologieën en geavanceerde monitoringsystemen, definiëren als het ware de manier waarop beveiliging en crowdmanagement wordt benaderd opnieuw. Deze technologieën bieden real-time inzichten, waardoor beveiligingspersoneel potentiële bedreigingen proactief kan identificeren en aanpakken. Data-analyses kunnen worden gebruikt om patronen in het gedrag van bezoekers te identificeren en om de veiligheid te verbeteren. Het kan bijvoorbeeld worden ingezet om de toestroom van bezoekers te voorspellen, om risicogebieden te identificeren of om de efficiëntie van de evacuatie te verbeteren.
Drones
Van een andere orde is de inzet van drones. Dat klinkt misschien nog als sciencefiction voor velen maar de techniek wordt steeds interessanter. Drones kunnen worden gebruikt voor de surveillance van evenementen en voor het leveren van hulp in geval van nood. Ze kunnen bijvoorbeeld worden ingezet om een overzicht te krijgen van een menigte, om slachtoffers te lokaliseren of om snel een eerste basisvorm van medische hulp te leveren. Zo maakt de iconische Super Bowl de

laatste jaren consequent gebruik van state-of-the-art technologieën, waaronder dronedetectiesystemen en biometrische authenticatie, om bezoekers te beschermen en de operationele continuïteit te handhaven. Maar soms kan het gebruik van een app al voor veel rust en stroomlijning zorgen. Een voorbeeld is bijvoorbeeld de inzet van een speciale app tijdens de Museumnacht. Het betrof hier het gebruik de Appmiral event-app, een white-label oplossing waarmee CM.com organisatoren in staat stelt om laagdrempelig met hun doelgroep te communiceren. Handig want met 30.000 bezoekers verspreid over ruim 60 musea is Museumnacht Amsterdam een van ’s lands grootste culturele stadsevenementen. In de app biedt Museumnacht Amsterdam onder meer een volledig programma, per museum een informatieprogramma en een kleur-tag die de drukte in elke specifieke locatie aangeeft, een nieuwsfeed en genoemde push-notificaties. Zo werden bezoekers verspreid over de stad en werd proactief te veel drukte op enkele plekken tegengegaan.
Integratie van AI en gezichtsherkenning
Kunstmatige intelligentie (AI) en gezichtsherkenningssystemen zijn uitgegroeid tot krachtige tools om de beveiliging bij grote evenementen te verbeteren. Deze technologieën maken de snelle identificatie van individuen mogelijk, waardoor snel kan worden gereageerd op beveiligingsincidenten en toegangscontrolemaat-

Crowdmanagement Strategieën

Door AI-aangedreven bewaking te gebruiken, kunnen organisatoren effectief het gedrag van de menigte monitoren en anomalieën detecteren, wat bijdraagt aan een veiligere omgeving. In Nederland loopt dit nog niet zo heel erg storm, maar op termijn gaan we dit zeker zien bij grote evenementen. Ook bij grote sportevenementen voor personen met een stadionverbod biedt dit logischerwijs uitkomst. Privacy en wetgeving wegen uiteraard ook mee in de overweging dergelijke tools in te zetten.
Traditioneel
De integratie van technologie in de service van Tribe Security (voorheen Intelligent Security) blijft een belangrijke focus. Het bedrijf investeert in geavanceerde beveiligingstechnologieën, zoals X-ray scanners en camera’s, om een meer integrale veiligheidsoplossing te bieden. Mede-eigenaar Toine van de Ven ziet nog wel dat sommige klanten erg traditioneel denken: “We laten partijen kennismaken met technologische oplossingen zoals X-Ray die kosten-efficiënter zijn. Klanten zijn soms aangenaam verrast door de mogelijkheden. De stijgende kosten voor beveiligers en de meer betaalbare technische alternatieven zorgen ervoor dat we een verschuiving zien naar het serieus overwegen van techniek als een haalbare optie. Toch blijft het een uitdaging om de organisatoren, gemeenten en hulpdiensten mee

In reactie op de veranderende aard van veiligheidsdreigingen worden crowdmanagementstrategieën voortdurend verfijnd. De nadruk ligt op het implementeren van proactieve maatregelen om te veel drukte te voorkomen, een vlotte toegang en uitgangsprocessen te faciliteren en het welzijn van bezoekers te garanderen. Dit omvat de inzet van geavanceerde wachtrijbeheersystemen, analyse van menigtesstromen en het vaststellen van aangewezen veilige zones binnen evenementlocaties. Daaraan gekoppeld zijn direct de noodresponsplannen. De noodzaak hiervan kan niet worden overschat in het kader van evenementbeveiliging. Organisatoren richten zich steeds meer op het integreren van technologie gedreven oplossingen om noodcommunicatie, evacuatieprocedures en medische hulp te stroomlijnen. Dit omvat het gebruik van mobiele applicaties voor realtime meldingen, geolocatiediensten om hulpverleners te begeleiden en het inzetten van onbemande luchtvaartuigen (UAV’s) om situaties snel in kaart te brengen en kritieke incidenten razendsnel te beoordelen.
Opleiding en scholing
Het personeelstekort in de beveiligingssector is een andere uitdaging die de noodzaak van goede opleiding benadrukt. Beveiligingsbedrijven hebben moeite om voldoende gekwalificeerd personeel te vinden om aan de vraag te voldoen. Dit betekent dat beveiligingspersoneel steeds meer verantwoordelijkheden moet dragen, waardoor goede opleiding nog belangrijker wordt. Goede opleiding van beveiligers is essentieel om de veiligheid en het welzijn van bezoekers aan festivals en grote sportevenementen te garanderen. Beveiligingsbedrijven moeten investeren in opleiding om ervoor te zorgen dat hun personeel over de vaardigheden en kennis beschikt die nodig zijn om hun taken veilig en effectief uit te voeren.
