EDITOR’S  LETTER

CHANGE IN THE AIR

Hello Friends.

Life after the covid is seen as a refreshing change for many. But for those who are at the back of the IT infra there is no change. Their work is double now. Apart from addressing the previous remote work atmosphere they are now dealing with people who are working from office as well -real case of hybrid work atmosphere. On top of it, the management is asking them to innovate and bring the cost down, bring in new technologies and secure the entire infrastructure. Digital of course is their ultimate goal but before that there are other activities they are pursuing. Every day are dealing with new developments, patch management, educating workforce and customers how to securely access their emails, etc. Also, renewals of big-ticket SAP applications and many other things. To most of the IT leaders, the management has given assurance that they would deal with any financial challenges in order onboard right technology.

NEXT MONTH SPECIAL

During the pandemic most of the organizations have done better and earned profit. In the consumer market too, which is the end-user for every corporate except some sectors, others have done better. Specially IT consumption has gone up very high. Now the target is to maintain the momentum and out-perform the previous benchmark. Apart from the industry leaders, the start-up technologies have done very good during this time because of their new age technology integration. Of course, software as a service mode has resonated everywhere - including with the IT leaders in the large enterprises. Particularly in the DC technology enterprises have moved back and forth – from on-prem to hosted and back to on-prem too. Depending on their requirement they have done so, and it would continue this quarter and going forward too. Technology disruption in every organization has given the flexibility and affordability to the IT leaders. It is no more the one rule for all applicable or one product fit to all applicable. In order to gauge the market sentiment, Enterprise IT World has been doing a lot of events and surveys from time to time. Our latest endeavor is CIO100, which is going to be the largest CIO event for the ASIA. We are inviting the IT leaders in various countries in the region to participate and make the entries about their challenges so that we can take that to the OEMs and consultants to bring in better solution for the IT Leaders.

KLEVV Rolls Out S1 and R1 Portable SSDs with Extreme Speeds

Alarming Trend: Backups Are Now a Ransomware Target

By: Jim McGann, Vice President Marketing & Business Development, Index Engines Intelligence needed for a quick and reliable recovery process When ransomware started penetrating firewalls and attacking organizations’ data, analysts and hardware providers preached backup as the best way to recover. And many organizations have relied on this for their cyber resiliency strategy. Now an alarming trend has developed with more sophisticated ransomware attacking and disabling backup to cripple organizations and drive ransom demands higher. FBI alerts and top tier security publications have noticed.  In September the FBI and Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency

(CISA) warned: Malicious actors have also added tactics, such as encrypting or deleting system backups—making restoration and recovery more difficult or infeasible for impacted organizations. https://us-cert.cisa. gov/ncas/alerts/aa21-243a  Conti Ransomware Adds Ability to Compromise Backups, according to a report published in September, which details how Conti has honed its backup destruction to a fine art. After all, backups are a major obstacle to encouraging ransomware payment. (https://threatpost. com/conti-ransomware-backups/175114/ )  FBI Alert on Hive Ransomware from August seeks processes related to backups, anti-virus/anti-spyware, and file copying and terminates them to facilitate file encryption. https://www.ic3.gov/Media/ News/2021/210825.pdf Many organizations have not. “Organizations are overly confident that their backups have integrity and can be used to recover data when they are hit by a ransomware attack, Index Engines vice President Jim McGann said. “Cyber criminals do not want organizations to easily recover, so they have set their sights on backup; corrupting, encrypting or deleting them, to make a very challenging to execute a reliable and timely recovery.

Zoho One grows by 104% in India and announces new apps

Cloud 20/20™ Contest Becomes Unisys Innovation Program; Registration Opens for India’s 13th Annual Technical Project Competition Unisys Corporation today announced that registration is open for the company’s annual flagship technical project competition for engineering students across India, featuring a new name: the Unisys Innovation Program (UIP). Established in 2009 under the name Cloud 20/20™, UIP enables engineering students to develop career-ready technical and soft skills by applying theoretical knowledge of the latest technologies to solve real-world problems. The contest is open to research students, postgraduates, pre-final and final-year engineering students in computer science, information technology and other related streams. It brings together stakeholders from across the tech innovation fields to provide rich experiential learning to students. Since its inception, more

than 55,000 students have taken part, making it one of India’s most anticipated technical contests. The program has several facets that appeal to different factions of the tech community, structured into two primary program tracks: n The Student Innovation Program challenges students to use emerging technologies for original and creative solutions to defined problems. n The Targeted Innovation Program tasks students with solving specific business problems provided by Unisys and its partners and clients in the industry. These programs allow students to collaborate with peers, faculty and Unisys mentors, who provide guidance and expertise in the run-up to the competition.

Zoho Corporation introduced six new apps, three new services and seven major platform enhancements in Zoho One, the operating system for business. In 2020, Zoho One’s customer growth was 60% y-y globally, and 104% in India, its second largest market. The new release empowers businesses to solve disjointed data challenges and close communications gaps across silos, so organizations can become more productive, adapt more quickly to remote and hybrid work model, and become poised for growth. “The experience that employees, customers, partners, and suppliers get when dealing with businesses is typically a reflection of how that business and its systems are structured internally. Cring Ransomware Utilize 11-Year-Old Adobe ColdFusion Software to Begin Advanced Attack, Sophos Research Disclose Sophos a global head in next-generation cybersecurity, has issue research, “Cring Ransomware Exploits Ancient ColdFusion Server,” describing a sophisticated attack the Cring ransomware operators mounted against a target after hacking a server running an unpatched, 11-year-old version of Adobe’s ColdFusion 9 software. The target used the server to collect timesheet and accounting data for payroll and to host multiple virtual machines. The attackers breached the internet-facing server in minutes and executed the ransomware 79 hours later. Andrew Brandt, principal researcher at Sophos, 14 ENTERPRISE IT WORLD  OCTOBER 2021

said “Devices running vulnerable, outdated software are low-hanging-fruit for cyberattackers looking for an easy way into a target,” s. “Cring ransomware isn’t new, but it’s uncommon. In the incident we researched, the target was a services company, and all it took to break in was one internet-facing machine running old, out-of-date and unpatched software. The surprising thing is that this server was in active daily use. Often the most vulnerable devices are inactive or ghost machines, either forgotten about or overlooked when it comes to patching and upgrades. “But, regardless of what the status is – in use or

inactive – unpatched internet-facing servers or other devices are prime targets for cyberattackers scanning a company’s attack surface for vulnerable entry points. This is a stark reminder that IT administrators benefit from having an accurate inventory of all their connected assets and cannot leave out-of-date critical business systems facing the public internet. If organizations have these devices anywhere on their network, they can be sure that cyberattackers will be attracted to them. Don’t make life easy for cybercriminals.”

Nishant Tripathi, Cybersecurity Consultant, North, Sophos Technologies Pvt Ltd, speaking on Close Gap in cloud Security, said, “For last 18 – 20 months we have been living in a very different era and businesses have been forced to change the way they used to work in the past. In

the security industry also we have done a lot to improve in past 4-5 years. Particularly, not only how businesses have evolved but also how attackers have shifted their game but how the customers have adopted cloud because no one was prepared for this pandemic. As we migrate to Cloud, it is not only putting up servers and applications onto cloud and assessing from anywhere but also this adoption has given a lot of opportunities for companies to grow, opportunities to adopt new business process. But at the same time, this has given a lot of surface area to making an attack from the attackers’ post of view cyber-criminal.

They have been very much sophisticated in today’s time. They have introduced new ways to launch and it’s not only about malware but there have been multiple incidents of data breaches and authorized access, and Cryptomining and Cryptojacking kind of concepts.” Biswajit Mohapatra, Partner & Executive Director, Hybrid Cloud Transformation, IBM, speaking on the topic of Robust to Resilience: Your Hybrid Cloud Transformation, said “As you know the world has changed and so also the risk for all of us. same time it has presented unique opportunity as well. Today, enterprises as trying to reset their business models and reimagine their business processes and reinvent their business to stay competitive in the marketplace. The world is really becoming more intelligent, interconnected and instrumented today. That is exactly giving us the opportunity to think differently, act differently and transform to the new ways, whether it is economically, socially or technically. A new business paradigm is really evolving. When we talk about the new business paradigm, it comprised of three distinct leavers. The first lever is all about new business models – how organizations can reimagine their businesses, how can they do the market activation – that is evolving as a core focus for many of the enterprises today, the second lever is all about new ways to do work. How can I leverage all those exponential technologies that is available today to create actionable insights for the business; how can make my operations more responsive. The third lever is all about building new expertise by learning, unlearning and relearning is going to be the key focus for all of us. So, building that restless talent and orchestrated ecosystem is going to be extremely important. Gone are those when you could decide that you operate in silos, and you have all the capabilities of the world to deliver solutions to your client and it is not going to work that ways today.” Talking in the panel discussion on, “On-Prem vs Cloud – which is better?” Dr. Rizwan Ahmed, CTO, delaplex, said, “Cloud adoption has grown & popularity in recent years is further sustained and accelerated after the pandemic due to the digital transformation leadership according to Gartner. Worldwide end-user dependence on Public Cloud Service is forecasted to grow to a total of US$396 billion in 2021. Cloud services bring freedom enabling hardware consistency, agility, and enhanced functionality. It is very hard to deny the cloud benefits.” Dr. Mukesh Mehta, CTO- CISO, Batlivala & Karani Security India Ltd, added, “Cloud vs on-Prem is the dilemma for every today. It is there for last five years and it would continue to be there. Five years back, when we started our cloud journey, we started with one cloud but today, everyone is in multiple cloud, hybrid cloud and in same problem – whether it is BFSI, Manufacture, even healthcare. These are the common problems that everyone is having. For BFSI, many applications are in cloud, and many are on-prem. So BFSI would continue to stay in hybrid and mix mode.” Amit Nerurkar, Shelby Limited, said “In the cloud governance we have to decide how the users will make the use of the cloud services. We have

18 ENTERPRISE IT WORLD    OCTOBER 2021

to create a policies to control the overall cost, minimize the overall security risk & improve the efficiency plus accelerate the deployment of the services for the business to get the benefit out of it. This is extremely important because the cloud at one point gives you a lot of flexibility but with flexibility comes a responsibility & have to check what exactly is happening overall governess frame work you have to have in place so that cost doesn’t go off the rope at the same time risk are minimize plus the business gets the benefit out of it. When it comes to overall governance you have to ensure that asset deployment system, interaction, data security everything is properly considered examined and managed. When you are shifting from on premise IT infrastructure to the cloud you need to have additional layers of complexity for your own system architecture has to be taken care. Atul Anand, Head Production Readiness Delivery and Transformation, Toll Technology Center, said, “when we see that Industries are having a tectonic shift because of so many things, whether it is SNACK phenomena, things are changing. Digital transformation is eating its own pie. For me, most important thing is – business, which is asking to scale up things faster or we looking for the thing which is in our own house. We being 100 plus old organization, the newer implementation the newer role out have to happen on cloud that’s how we can get agility, scalability as well. Having said that as I also see that how the kind of generation who is going the work force, they are the people how want solution. For them the cloud can be right way because you can put your application, you can put your new development. We need to understand that what the business requirement is.” Talking in panel discussion on, “Is security still a concern on the cloud” Mr. Arvind Koul, IT Infrastructure, added, “The Cloud adoption has been prodigy shift especially during the pandemic time people realize the power of cloud & you need to secure perimeter. Data breaches are something which is happening so frequently that is the first threat in the environment. It’s become so costly for the organization to recover from this happening. The primary reason for all this breaches but primarily I see human error. It’s very important to create an awareness, educated staff, how to handle the data and how to save it from the hackers. We need to think how to remediate and have a strategy to go with the method while we remediate line down all this kind of threats. ” Ravindra Arora, CISO, Infogain, said, “Top five concerned for the security concerned are, People are talking about organization transformation to

the cloud but very few people are talking about security for the cloud. I also believe it’s even easy to transform start your journey meet your cloud transformation but also difficult part to ensure that there is an adequate security and privacy controls available in the cloud. Security has really become our biggest priority, there should be a concept of security of design. Once we actually outsource something to the cloud we actually lose control in monitoring this is the most big concerned I have witnessed myself when we have given keys to other person to manage then there is definitely losing control, we don’t know what is happening, we don’t get the 24*7 monitoring so these are the some issue.” Mr. Aryan Panchal, Head IT DIGITAL & CISO, Indigrid Ltd, said, “cloud service provider is responsible for the security of the cloud which is the permitted area and we as customer we are responsible for the security in the cloud (what we are hosting with cloud) so this of and in we need to understand and apply and take the related mentions. There should be an end-to-end security architecture &implementation of it. We need to design and implement root cyber threat intelligence efficiency monitoring of the security breaches, the vulnerability, and the text act to support all this so that we can rely on the detection and the containment of this kind of activity.” Sachin Wangankar, Vice President, HeadCloud Web Werks India Pt. Ltd, said “Today security is very important to cloud and cloud companies’ platforms. We listen to a lot of devops but devops cannot be complete without security. Security cannot be a past thought but should be for thought. If you are on SaaS model, then you are more concerned about draining the data and putting the right controls. It gets more and more responsibility oriented as you go for PaaS or IaaS. The responsibility goes more onto the consumer front or to the organization. So, today, we speak about data, storage, data coming from multiple options. Before you store data, there are multiple options we need to choose from. You can’t have a similar or same data for all the data classifications. There are solutions where the data is actually in scripted before it is stored on to the storage mechanism.” Styajit Das, Director Cloud Infrastructure Services, Capgemini Technology Services concluded the session by saying, “We all understand that cloud is the future and irrespective of the security concerned that we have, it is a journey. We have to face it.”

Why is hybrid cloud emerging as the go-to IT infrastructure model for businesses? Business and Technology have become deeply intertwined. In the rapidly changing business landscape, organizations are becoming more technology-smart to both stay ahead of the competition as well as remain relevant to customers. They are increasingly embracing hybrid cloud strategies to protect earlier investments in technology, while creating a shorter, faster runway for innovation, with the cloud. They are realizing that a hybrid cloud strategy can help them scale faster and better, given the public cloud’s innovative and flexible services. Further, organizations are also benefiting from superior economics, more choice, greater agility, improved regulatory compliance, and much stronger business resilience overall. Why are more and more Indian organizations betting on a hybrid cloud strategy? A hybrid cloud model offers Indian enterprises the ability to remain agile, innovate faster and introduce new products/services to their end consumers quickly, giving them the time-to-market advantage. Further, aspects like deployment choice and auto-scalability offered by a hybrid

cloud model are helping Indian organizations focus more on their core business - and leave IT management to the experts i.e., cloud providers like Oracle. Advanced, automated security is another key factor, as the tech provider is responsible for regular, timely updates. For example, the flexibility of cloud deployment models we offer via our next-generation cloud infrastructure is helping Indian enterprises remain fully compliant with regulatory requirements. Another key factor is predictable and transparent pricing. With IT budgets under rising scrutiny, using a hybrid cloud approach helps enterprises save significantly on IT CAPEX and instead use the most modern, secure, enterprise-class technologies via an OPEX, pay-per-use model. What’s Oracle’s approach to delivering hybrid cloud solutions to enterprises? We continue to expand our footprint of Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) public and Government cloud regions worldwide. Some of our other offerings that enterprises can take advantage of, to design the right hybrid cloud strategy, include: Oracle Roving Edge Infrastructure: This is our newest hybrid cloud offering within OCI. With this, we are bringing core infrastructure

services to the edge with our Roving Edge Devices (REDs). These are ruggedized, portable, scalable server nodes. Using this, organizations gain the capability to run cloud workloads wherever they need them, even in the remotest locations globally. Oracle Cloud VMware Solution: Using this, a number of large and mid-size banks in India are already realizing the benefits of OCI’s dedicated, cloud-native VMware-based environment. This is helping them retain a high level of control. Auto scalability and lower costs are two other aspects resonating very well with our customers in India. Oracle Dedicated Region Cloud@Customer: With this offering, an enterprise can avail all capabilities typically offered via a public cloud region, but they are delivered right inside their own premises. In effect, enterprises get the very same complete set of modern cloud services Oracle offers, APIs, industry-leading SLAs, greater price-performance benefits, and advanced security - but more importantly, within their own datacenters. A lot of large enterprises are finding this to be a very compelling proposition.

lose to half of (46%) of India’s IT leaders say they are not “fully confident” in their ability to respond to data, malware phishing, supply chain, ransomware, cloud, IoT and application attacks, according to a new global survey by Rackspace Technology® (NASDAQ: RXT), a leading end-to-end, multicloud technology solutions company. Out of the 150 respondents in India, fewer than half (46%) of local respondents say they can effectively respond to incidents, mitigate threats (45%), or understand the nature of the threats they are facing (40%) when it comes to organisations’ attack response capabilities. 20 ENTERPRISE IT WORLD    OCTOBER 2021

The survey of 1,420 IT professionals also reveals widespread uncertainty that organizations possess the talent and skills to meet cybersecurity challenges, with the majority of (89%) of respondents saying their organizations lack the necessary skills and expertise to respond to a growing array of threats. “Though most respondents to our survey say they are ‘prepared’ for cyber-attacks, there is a high degree of anxiety about their ability to effectively confront adversaries who are increasingly sophisticated,” said Jeff DeVerter, Chief Evangelist Rackspace Technology. “Moreover, the expanding use of the cloud, IoT and applications, as well as a tight talent market and an increase in

IT Trends Driving Cyber Complexity The ubiquity of the cloud, DevOps methodologies and the condensing of development cycles, coupled with other IT trends, have made addressing cyberthreats an increasingly complex task. 31% of India’s survey respondents cite the growth in cloud and IoT as key challenges, followed by new threats and attack methods 39% and the growth in data volumes, digital operations, and remote work (42%), which has resulted in increased opportunities for attackers. Forty-eight percent of India respondents say their ability to manage application security in a more complex environment is influenced by new ways of working, including DevOps and Agile development practices. Other dynamics include faster release/delivery cycles 52%, the growth in microservice application architectures (51%), hybrid/multicloud environments (49%) and container runtime environments (43%). When asked about the nature and targets of the cyberattacks they are seeing, network/platforms (65%) lead the way, followed by web applications (54%) and network operating systems (48%). More than half (53%) of all attacks are Advanced Persistent Threats (APTs), while 43% involve stolen credentials and 38% result from unauthorized exposure to data. Talent and Staffing Pain Points More than half (52%) of India survey respondents say they having difficulty recruiting and retaining cybersecurity talent, with the greatest skills gaps in the areas of cloud security (41%) and network security (38%) which respondents also identified as their most critical roles. Across the businesses, IT leaders cite lack of expertise (89%), lack of resources (91%) and lack of time (63%) was their most pressing cybersecurity and compliance challenges. Most local respondents manage cybersecurity in-house, with less than a third enlisting external expertise, either through Managed Security Service Providers (MSSPs), Managed Detection and Response Providers (MDRPs) or systems integrators. Cloud, data, integrated risk security network and identity access are most frequently handled by in-house staff while (41%) outsource integrated risk security and 45% task by external partners to assist with network security. visibility, Budget allocation and forecasting, Overprovisioned resources etc. To overcome these challenges, customers need to start analyzing and applying the cloud cost optimization best practices regularly. There are 5 key foundation Pillars of cost optimization. These pillars provide guidance to apply best practices in the design, delivery and maintenance of cloud environments. A cost-optimized workload fully utilizes all resources, achieves an outcome at the lowest possible price point and meets our functional requirements. n Right-Sizing Services n Right Pricing Model n Right Storage Class n Increase Elasticity using Auto-scaling n Measuring & Monitoring

igital transformation is all about enhancing customer experience by adopting cloud-based intelligence industry solutions and establishing cloud-native application development i.e., building applications directly on cloud to realize the actual benefits of Cloud. Cloud-native development is an application development and deployment approach which is the most effective way to gain application performance while reducing deployment risks. A Cloud-native development combines a modular architectural approach like microservices, Containers, API and DevOps practices to allow continuous application delivery.

30% their cloud consumption pricing going towards waste and 70% going towards efficient spend. So, it’s essential to creating and enabling a cost Governance Model right from the beginning of the digital journey driving by cloud. Public cloud service providers (CSPs) continue to grow in popularity and top providers such as Google Cloud Platform, AWS and Azure offer competitive prices to attract enterprises and financial organizations. Cloud cost optimization is a continuous process and it reducing the overall cloud spend by identifying mismanaged resources, eliminating waste, reserving capacity for higher discounts and Right Sizing computing services to scale.

Cost Optimization Strategy and Approach: Adopting the right cost optimization approach can help customers to control and optimize cost effectively. When we compare Cloud with Traditional Data Center Application Deployment then there is a paradigm shift of financial model from CapEX (Capital expenditures) to OpEx i.e. on-going monthly operating expense and cost structure according to the subscription plan. There are four phases of cost optimization approach that I have discussed in the below section. Phase 1: Data Collection – This phase mainly involves capture monthly billing data for all the application environments and understanding customers cloud billing reports, services and usage trends. Phase 2: Analysis and Interviewing – This phase involves figuring out how and why part of the service consumption keeping in mind all the best practices, offerings, saving plans, free tier utilization etc. and top cloud resource utilization by cost. This phase involves interviewing the right cloud teams to understand the app performance requirements. Phase 3: Recommendations: This phase involves a list of recommendation and submission of a summary report to customer on what to apply first then how to apply it. It includes all the cost optimization solutions for all the applications with % of cost savings per applications and per environment. Phase 4: Implementation: This phase involves the cloud service provider implementation steps for the given recommendations, risk & mitigation analysis details, down time requirements and high-level change management process.

Remote working has been the biggest paradigm shift in our lives after the pandemic’s advent. Organizations are still navigating this new change, and many of them are opting for a hybrid-work model, while others are still working remotely. According to a Gartner study of June 2020, 47% of the respondents said they intend to allow employees to work remotely full time going forward, while 43% of survey respondents reported they would grant employees a hybrid model, and the rest will provide flexible hours. At this juncture, organizations must strive for high adaptability and flexibility, in order to stay agile and relevant in business. The major concern here is managing a well-adjusted and motivated hybrid workforce and assuring team productivity. Connectivity is the key The pandemic’s overnight impact revealed that those organizations that were already technically prepared to manage a remote team fared far better than the rest in navigating the cataclysmic changes of the pandemic. To establish seamless coordination between different teams, organizations must provide appropriate technical support and smooth-running backend processes. The IT team’s role at this junction takes center stage. The idea is to ensure that the remote-location factor should not affect the seamless functioning of teams and their work pace. 22 ENTERPRISE IT WORLD    OCTOBER 2021

Strong Company Culture Another most essential factor for the success of a hybrid workforce is the organization’s relationship with the employees. Naturally, during stressful times, employees seek additional transparency, empathy, and display of strong leadership values from the management. Companies must establish and foster a strong company culture for the workforce to feel connected and united with the organization’s ideology. By and large, managing people in a remote work model can be as effective as managing in a traditional office environment, if team communication is well managed. WFH through Employee Perspectives The hybrid or remote-working scenario, however, is said to have disrupted the work-life balance of many employees. At times the line between working hours and personal time gets blurred while working from home. Undefined and stretched working hours for a prolonged time can lead to burnout and anxiety. Again, most people live in shared spaces with young children and other members. They may need to share their work devices, especially with young children who have online classes through phones or laptops. Hence, organizations must have flexible working hour policies that ensure that their employees are not working overtime and also that they have their working hours as per

their convenience. With COVID-19’s impact across businesses, employees may go through uncertainties about their current job situations and other related issues. This can lead to unwanted stress and insecurities amongst the employees. In order to prevent that, companies must send out regular information regarding employee welfare schemes, promotions, salary opportunities and other benefits, and keep their employees well informed. Employee Activities With zero physical meetings and only-online interactions between co-workers, the communication process can become tedious to some extent. Non-work related interactions and activities initiated by organizations have proved to be a great success with the workforce during the lockdown. Such activities help teams feel connected and keep the camaraderie going stronger. Any steps taken for employee’s well-being will never go unnoticed and will play a critical role in long-term talent retention and talent acquisition. It is agreeable to say that the nature of work, engagement and office settings have changed profoundly after the recent pandemic. Workplace dynamics will continue to go through several alterations. Re-learning and adaptations to the changing scenarios will help businesses to keep moving forward.

V I K A S

B H O N S L E

CEO, Crayon Software Experts India

The strategy for digitization must be for the long term. So it is advisable to choose carefully before investing in digital tools.

24 ENTERPRISE IT WORLD    OCTOBER 2021

DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION  //  INTERVIEW

THE EXPEDITION OF DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION IS A POSITIVE OUTCOME OF THE PANDEMIC Being in the business of digital transformation, what are the major requirements that you come across from clients in India? Indian organizations are currently seeking digital transformation assistance in cloud solutions, cloud storage and cybersecurity measures. The pandemic drove most organizations into the remote and hybrid work model, which led to the rising demand for cloud services. Also, companies have come around to understand that digitization is now a major priority for their businesses to be efficient and stay relevant in the long run, much before the COVID-19’s advent. The pandemic increased that pace and made it an overnight necessity. Today, we are helping companies in cloud storage, digital workspaces, unified service delivery platforms, and other tools that can bring speed and efficiency to their business processes. How is India coming up as a digitally smart country? The researchers at Harvard University have emphasized that India is leapfrogging into the Fourth Industrial Revolution. We are now the second-fastest digitizing economy and a recognized global IT force. India’s expertise in information technology has broadened the country’s possibility of innovation in every aspect of its economic engine. It has helped optimize resources across sectors ranging from e-education, manufacturing, agriculture, healthcare, retail, financial services, banking, national defense, and security to public utilities. However, it is one thing to be digitally equipped and another to utilize the benefits of data generation. Several drawbacks such as data skills gap, data silos, manual processes, business

silos, and data privacy and security weaknesses have kept Indian companies from taking full advantage of their data pool. With data analysis, companies can derive predictive knowledge for improved decision making, mitigating risk & fraud, improving customer service, and optimizing and improving customer experiences. How much advantage are Indian businesses deriving from the Big Data boom? Surprisingly, Big Data is proving to be a bane than a boon for many organizations at present. Some companies are still reluctant to pursue any data analytics strategy, while others are keeping their data in their own data centers despite knowing the benefits of data processing at the edge or the cloud. According to new research by Dell and Forrester Consulting, 82% of organizations in India generate data faster than they can analyze and use and 71% of businesses say they constantly need more data than their current capabilities provide. The research further highlights that 63% of Indian businesses struggle with security and compliance requirements, and 67% are already overwhelmed with their current data repository. Many of them don’t possess the technical skills required to manage a data lake. The situation can improve if companies start shifting to an as-aService model for most of their applications and infrastructure. It will allow businesses to save time and resources from moving and tracking data from one platform to another and help derive actionable insights faster. With an as-a-Service model, companies also gain better control of their IT spend, improve their outdated IT infrastructure, and better support their data teams — all

without committing to heavy Capex costs. How do you see the COVID’s impact in the digital landscape of India? With any crisis. come greater opportunities. The nationwide lockdown in 2020 unwittingly accelerated the digital transformation process amongst businesses, as they had to ensure business continuity at all costs. This expedition of digital transformation is a positive outcome of the pandemic. COVID lockdown protocols resulted in people resorting to virtual proximity. The frequency of using digital services and platforms was on the rise like never before. From learning to working to entertaining, all happened online through digital modes. Therefore, it was a natural progression for businesses to deliver seamless digital solutions to their consumers. As per a McKinsey report, the digital transformation has impacted Asia in a manner that it is at least four years ahead, which means we achieved as much digital prowess by 2020 as expected to achieve not before 2024. What are the key aspects companies must keep in mind while transiting to digital mode? In normal times, while making any drastic change to the business processes, companies usually take sufficient time in planning and consulting with experts, treading carefully and after running several pilot projects, they make their final moves. However, in the new normal, there is less time for companies to spare in planning, especially when it comes to digital transition. Planning at times is dilly-dallying in disguise, which companies must be aware of. Playing safe and taking it slow can prove to be a strategically bad move. To get a digital transformation process on track, companies must now reassess their digital initiatives. Two major areas that companies need to assess in their digital initiatives – one, that provide immediate help to the workforce, customers, and the broad set of stakeholders to which the business is responsible, and two, that strengthens the company’s positioning for the new normal world. How have Crayon Software Experts India’s journey been so far? We are comparatively a new entrant in the industry, and with passing time, we are maturing very well in the data transformation business. We have spent the last several years developing and diversifying our offerings.

CRING RANSOMWARE UTILIZE 11-YEAR-OLD ADOBE COLDFUSION SOFTWARE TO BEGIN ADVANCED ATTACK, SOPHOS RESEARCH DISCLOSE

ANDREW BRANDT, PRINCIPAL RESEARCHER, SOPHOS

Sophos a global head in next-generation cybersecurity, has issue research, “Cring Ransomware Exploits Ancient ColdFusion Server,” describing a sophisticated attack the Cring ransomware operators mounted against a target after hacking a server running an unpatched, 11-year-old version of Adobe’s ColdFusion 9 software. The target used the server to collect timesheet and accounting data for payroll and to host multiple 26 ENTERPRISE IT WORLD    OCTOBER 2021

virtual machines. The attackers breached the internet-facing server in minutes and executed the ransomware 79 hours later. Andrew Brandt, principal researcher at Sophos, said “Devices running vulnerable, outdated software are low-hanging-fruit for cyberattackers looking for an easy way into a target,” s. “But, regardless of what the status is – in use or inactive – unpatched internet-facing servers or other devices are prime targets for cyberattackers scanning a company’s attack surface for vulnerable entry points. This is a stark reminder that IT administrators benefit from having an accurate inventory of all their connected assets and cannot leave out-of-date critical business systems facing the public internet. If organizations have these devices anywhere on their network, they can be sure that cyberattackers will be attracted to them. Don’t make life easy for cybercriminals.” Sophos found that following the initial breach, the attackers used fairly sophisticated techniques to conceal their files, inject code into memory, and cover their tracks by over-writing files with garbled data or deleting logs and other artifacts that threat hunters could use in an investigation. The attackers were also able to disable security products because the tamper-protection functionality was switched off.

CYBERSECURITY AND SAFETY, COLLABORATION, INNOVATION: THREE-WAY APPROACH TO PUSH INDIAN AUTOMOTIVE ECOSYSTEM

NXP India, one of the biggest R&D Centres for NXP Semiconductors and leading organization in secure connectivity solutions for embedded applications organized their 9th Mega Tech

Summit- Security & Safety Week. With the theme ‘Are Safety and Security a source of competitive advantage for next-generation products’ the virtually held event shed light on how in the

hyper-connected and constantly evolving Indian automotive sector, safety and security technologies should be given due importance. Cybersecurity and functional safety, multilevel stakeholder collaboration & engagement, and sparking innovation through incentives, were identified as the pathway to an indigenous automotive ecosystem. The four-day long virtual event comprised of multiple engaging keynotes by NXP Global leaders starting with Rafael Sotomayor, Executive Vice President & General Manager, Connectivity & Security, Henri Ardevol, Executive Vice President & General Manager, Automotive Processing, Lars Reger, Executive Vice President & Chief Technology Officer and Steve Owen, Executive Vice President, Sales and Marketing. Lars Regar, Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, NXP Semiconductors, said “Software functionality is important, but all security is actually interlinked and anchored. There’s nothing like distinct software or hardware security, it is the overall security that matters at the end of the day.” Without stringent cybersecurity measures, the entire vehicle can be hacked. The notion that hacking is only limited to software or integrated systems is becoming a thing of the past with integrated and embedded systems coming into play. For strengthening cybersecurity through tech adoption and giving impetus to innovation, multiple players need to be on board. This cannot be done without government incentives, concerted approach and a knowledge sharing framework that involves all stakeholders. Sanjay Gupta added “Safety and security are non-negotiable. Any future product irrespective of its performance and intelligence cannot capture the mass market without consumer’s ‘trust’. Hence future belongs to those who take a holistic approach to safety and security and is focused on correct-by-construct approach by building next-generation products and solutions.” Functional Safety (ISO26262) integration into semiconductors development cycle is a niche skill and requires specialized training. Skilled workforce and keeping the curriculum in sync with latest industry innovations is another imperative for a world-class ecosystem. “A nation that can do this best in keeping curriculum updated with times and imparting best-in-class training to college grads will have the thought leadership lead when it comes to innovations and building a tech ecosystem”, added Lars.
