For a Change!
ANUSHREE DIXIT A S S I S TA N T E D I T O R A N U S H R E E @ G E C M E D I A G R O U P. C O M
I recently turned over the leaves ofSatya Nadella’s #Hit Refresh. As the title suggests it is all about breathing change into the existing ecosystems and disrupting the status quo. Indeed, things have changed and changed for good. ICT infrastructure is no more the same, nor the players leading it. Enthusiastic spirits have revisited the mantra to ruling the roost and we could actually see some emerging or start-up companies making their way to being the choice of the customer who wanted to fuel their business with extra mileage. The reason being very simple— sheer effort in bringing customer-centric solutions. We came across many organizations who honestly accepted the fact that just being a ‘brand’ no more helped them. And this stands true for a majority of the customers, who were interested in talking to solution providers who could give them dedicated attention while working on a project rather than peppered attention. CIOs and CXOs are also willing to be part of training and networking sessions that can help them usher in value to the organizations. We definitely saw the partner ecosystem playing a major role here. The InfraInsights 2017 is brought to you to reflect this ‘Change’. Rather than putting up profiles of the leading vendors in each domain, we have also taken the effort to highlight what makes them different from their competitors and we paralleled it with their major customer wins, thereby putting them right on the leader board. What is more interesting is— at par with the leading players you will also find some new entrants in this edition. It is our way of telling the market that it is no more a race to supremacy that has to touch the finish line, but it is a process where you are not running but walking hand-in-hand with the customers. Let us know your feedback on the same. Happy browsing! ë

INFRASTRUCTURE MARKET AFRICA
THE AFRICAN VISION 2063 REPRESENTS THE ROADMAP OF THE REGION FOR UNPARALLELED GROWTH AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT. WHILE THIS MAY SEEM A LITTLE ODD, AS THE COUNTERPART COUNTRIES HAVE A GROWTH VISION OF 2020,
2030 ETC, THE AFRICAN CONTINENT IS SET FOR A SLOW BUT VISIBLE GROWTH. THE SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA IS POISED FOR A COLOSSAL GROWTH IN THE INFRASTRUCTURE TRAJECTORY. ACCORDING TO REPORTS , “THE AGENDA 2063’S INFRASTRUCTURE GOALS FOR AFRICA INCLUDE WELL-DEVELOPED ICT AND DIGITAL ECONOMIES, AS WELL AS WORLD-CLASS TRANSPORT INFRASTRUCTURES SUCH AS HIGH-SPEED RAILWAY NETWORKS AND ROADS, SUPPORTED BY EFFICIENT SEA AND AIR TRANSPORT.” YET ANOTHER INFRASTRUCTURE MARVEL WOULD BE THE PAN-AFRICAN HIGH SPEED TRAIN NETWORK THAT, ONCE READY, “WILL CONNECT ALL THE MAJOR CITIES OF THE CONTINENT, WITH ADJACENT HIGHWAYS AND PIPELINES FOR GAS, OIL, WATER, AS WELL AS ICT BROADBAND CABLES AND OTHER INFRASTRUCTURE.”APART FROM GIVING THE COUNTRY’S TOURISM A MAJOR THRUST, THIS WILL ALSO IMPACT THE ICT ROADMAP AS IN THE MIDDLE EAST, FINTECH HAS ALSO PENETRATED AFRICA WITH THE CONTINENT WAKING UP TO SOME NEW FINANCIAL REALITIES. ‘PAGA’ IS ONE SUCH EMERGING PAYMENT GATEWAY IN THE REGION MAKING WAVES RECENTLY. AS PER RESOURCES, “PAGA’S SIX MILLION CUSTOMERS CAN MAKE SUCH PAYMENTS THROUGH OPTIONS RANGING FROM SMARTPHONE-SUPPORTED APPS TO SIMPLE CODES PUNCHED INTO BASIC PHONES, OR THROUGH PAGA’S NATIONWIDE NETWORK OF 11,000 AGENTS – SET TO DOUBLE WITHIN A YEAR. CURRENTLY ABOUT 39% OF NIGERIA’S POPULATION ARE FINANCIALLY EXCLUDED, A FIGURE THE CENTRAL BANK OF NIGERIA AIMS TO REDUCE TO AROUND 20% BY 2020.” TALKING ABOUT THE OTHER SIDE OF GROWTH, AFRICAN COMPANIES HAVE STARTED TO FAST-TRACK THE ADOPTION OF CLOUD AND AS A RESULT ARE AGGRESSIVELY PURSUING OPPORTUNITIES TO MIGRATE. EVIDENCE OF THIS INVESTMENT WAS VISIBLE TODAY AS TERACO, AFRICA’S LARGEST, NEUTRAL DATA CENTRE, LAUNCHED ITS RIVERFIELDS HYPERSCALE CENTRE EAST OF JOHANNESBURG. FEATURING OVER 24 MW OF POWER AND 6000M² OF TECHNICAL DEPLOYMENT SPACE, RIVERFIELDS IS THE LARGEST COMMERCIAL DATA CENTRE OPERATOR IN AFRICA. THE GHANAIAN CLOUD AND MANAGED SERVICES MARKET IS STILL IN ITS INFANCY, OFFERING GROWTH OPPORTUNITIES FOR PROVIDERS. AFRICA’S TELECOM INDUSTRY HAS EXPLODED IN RECENT YEARS, LEAPFROGGING TRADITIONAL FIXED-LINE INFRASTRUCTURE AND MOVING STRAIGHT INTO MOBILE PHONES AND INTERNET SERVICES. SERVICES HAVE BECOMING INCREASINGLY COMPETITIVE WITH LOCAL COMPANIES TAKING MARKET SHARE, SETTING OFF PRICE WARS AND SQUEEZING PROFIT MARGINS.

MOROCCO AIMS TO POSITION ITSELF AS A STRATEGIC HUB IN THE MIDDLE EAST AND NORTH AFRICA BY BECOMING ONE OF THE TOP PERFORMING COUNTRIES IN THE REGION IN TERMS OF DATACOM INFRASTRUCTURE AND IT BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT. THE INVESTMENT REFORM PLAN PRESENTED IN JULY 2016 BY MOULAYHAFIDELALAMY, MINISTER OF INDUSTRY, TRADE, INVESTMENT AND THE DIGITAL ECONOMY, MARKED A STRATEGIC STEP IN THE REALISATION OF NEW REFORMS FOR BUILDING A COMPETITIVE AND EFFICIENT ECONOMIC MODEL. THIS ARTICLE AIMS TO PROVIDE A COMPREHENSIVE OVERVIEW OF THE REFORMS LAUNCHED AND INITIATIVES TAKEN TO DEVELOP THE MOROCCO DIGITAL PROGRAM 2020. THE DIGITAL PROGRAMME PLANS TO ACCELERATE MOROCCO’S DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION AND REINFORCE THE COUNTRY’S STATUS AS A REGIONAL DIGITAL HUB. THE PROGRAMME CONSISTS OF A $750M INVESTMENT IN REDUCING THE DIGITAL DIVIDE BY 50% THROUGH THE DIGITISATION OF ADMINISTRATIVE SERVICES, IMPROVED ACCESS TO INTERNET THROUGH FREE WIFI IN PUBLIC SPACES AND DIGITAL LITERACY PROGRAMMES, AIMING TO TRAIN OVER 39,007 ICT PROFESSIONALS BY 2020. LIBYAN POST, TELECOMMUNICATIONS AND IT COMPANY (LPTIC), HAS OUTLINED THE LATEST STATUS OF PLANS TO RESTRUCTURE LIBYA’S ICT SECTOR, IDENTIFYING A SERIES OF KEY INITIATIVES PLANNED FOR THE SECOND HALF OF 2017. IN ALGERIA, GDP GROWTH IS EXPECTED TO SLOW DOWN TO ABOUT 1.5% IN 2017 AND 2018, AS LOWER REVENUES FROM OIL AND GAS EXPORTS NEGATIVELY IMPACT GOVERNMENT INVESTMENTS.THE MAJOR IMPROVEMENT COMES FROM THE SCORE IN MOBILE BROADBAND, INCREASING FROM 4 TO 7 WITHIN ONE YEAR. AS A STARTER IN ITS EARLY STAGE, ALGERIA ONLY SCORES 2 IN ICT INVESTMENT, FALLING BEHIND FROM THE WORLD AVERAGE SCORED AT 4.8. THE LIMITED PENETRATION OF BROADBAND AND PEOPLE’S ACCESS TO THE INTERNET IS HINDERING THE FURTHER DEVELOPMENT.
4G WIRELESS IS ABOUT TO BE LAUNCHED BY A LEADING TELECOM PROVIDER IN ALGERIA. THIS COULD BE A MAJOR STEP TOWARDS MORE ADVANCED AND FASTER INTERNET CONNECTION AND WOULD HELP THE COUNTRY TO CATCH UP. THE ICT NATIONAL STRATEGY ALSO AIMS TO INCREASE SERVICES SUPPLY AND FACILITATE TELECOMMUNICATION SERVICES ACCESS TO THE GREATEST NUMBER OF USERS, PARTICULARLY IN RURAL AREA, AND AT COMPETITIVE PRICES.
US$320m VoIP ban resulted in US$320m of economic loss for Morocco during the first half of 2016.

ACCORDING TO A REPORT BY FROST & SULLIVAN, MANAGED SERVICES MARKET GROWTH WITHIN THE GCC IS SET TO EXPAND FROM USD 1,073 MILLION IN 2012 TO USD 3,112 MILLION BY 2018. CIOS ARE LOOKING AT MANAGED SERVICES AS A COST-EFFECTIVE SOLUTION WHICH WILL HELPS THEM IN MAINTAINING AND MANAGING THEIR GROWING IT INFRASTRUCTURE. WHILE THIS WAS MAINLY DONE BY LARGE ORGANIZATIONS IN THE PAST, LATELY SMB’S HAVE BEEN WORKING WITH SERVICE PROVIDERS TO TACKLE THEIR INFRASTRUCTURE REQUIREMENTS FOR GREATER BUSINESS SUSTAINABILITY. IT HAS BEEN A SNOWBALL EFFECT. WHAT WAS ONCE CONSIDERED TO BE AN UNLIKELY NCONCEPT HAS GAINED RAVE ATTENTION. MANAGED SERVICES ARE BEING ADOPTED ACROSS INDUSTRIES INCLUDING THE BFSI, AVIATION, GOVERNMENT, TELECOM AND RETAIL SECTORS. THEY ARE MAINLY LOOKING TO EASE THEIR SYSTEMS NOT ONLY FOR EMPLOYEES BUT ACROSS THE SUPPLY CHAIN AND THE END CUSTOMERS. IT IS ALSO CLEAR THAT THEY WANT TO HAVE A MORE EFFICIENT, RELIABLE AND SECURE SETUP WHICH IS CRITICAL FOR BUSINESS GROWTH. A CISCO STUDY PREDICTS THAT GLOBAL CLOUD TRAFFIC WILL REACH 14.1 ZB BY THE END OF 2020, UP FROM 3.9 ZB IN 2015. More than 45 million emails were inspected, all of which had passed through the incumbent email security system in use by each organization – of this, 31 percent were deemed “unsafe” by Mimecast. These assessments have uncovered more than 10.8 million pieces of spam, 8,682 dangerous file types, 1,778 known and 503 unknown malware attachments and 9,677 impersonation emails to date.

YOUR MARKET VERDICT Mimecast believes that email security is critical to ensure cyber resilience against targeted attacks and IT failure. As email moves to the cloud such as Microsoft Office 365, advanced security still requires a defense-in-depth strategy. PARTNERS IN THE REGION Our business model has always been based on
working with local distributors, system integrators and technology partners. Our company has created a comprehensive Partner Programme designed to give all our channel partners cutting edge wireless products, outstanding pre- and post-sales support, and valuable marketing tools and resources to help them succeed in their respective target markets. We currently have dozens of loyal partners in the Middle East, covering all countries and market sectors.
RECOGNITIONS AND ACHIEVEMENTS OF 2017 Specific to the region, the growth we have experienced in the Middle East has been one of our biggest achievements. In 2016, this region outperformed most other regions of the world, growing at over 22% when compared to the previous year. Today, it is our second biggest market after the CIS region where we started life more than 24 years ago.
YOUR MARKET VERDICT It is predicted that in the next 3 to 5 years, the wireless market will become even more diversified. There are already a number of alternative technologies available that are conducive for fixed wireless broadband, one of which is 4G/ LTE. Although 5G will definitely become a

serious competitor to our company in the future, there are currently no products that actually support 5G. This is mainly due to the fact that there is no approved standard to define the 5th generation of mobile wireless systems. The actual deployment of 5G, together with the associated products and services, are in our opinion a few years down the road. There are other alternatives too - the MulteFire that is 100% unlicensed LTE - there are some new solutions being introduced for frequency bands such as 17, 24, 60, 70 GHz, etc. We still believe that 5 GHz will remain the biggest market in terms of the unlicensed fixed wireless technologies. ë

VERDICT The key is for organizations to implement intelligent, integrated security solutions that provide visibility into user behaviour, coupled with robust cyber security programmes. These systems should be capable of observing behaviour and interpreting intent in order to proactively protect users, critical data and, most importantly, the point at which they intersect. It is only by understanding the intent behind a user’s actions that we can recognize the difference between good and bad cyber behaviours. ë

All Roads Lead to ‘Value’ FOR THE REGIONAL VAD , IT IS NOT JUST ABOUT RAISING THE BAR— IT IS ALSO
ABOUT REMAINING CONSISTENT. OUR EXCLUSIVE CONVERSATION WITH SUREN VEDANTHAM, MD, STORIT ON THE VAD’S ODYSSEY IN CROSSING THE MILESTONE OF 15 YEARS OF SERVICE EXCELLENCE IN THE REGION.
C
onsidering the heavily channel driven nature of the Middle East market, we have seen the partner ecosystem evolving to adapt to the rising needs of the customers and often enhancing the service with vendor extension models. At the same time, we have also seen many partner organizations fading away, just for the simple reason that they could not stand the test of time when it came to making ‘Customer-centricity’ their modus operandi. StorIT, as we write this story, is busy celebrating their 15th successful year as a VAD in the
Middle East. With a constant pursuit to offer cutting edge solutions and services, the VAD’s undying spirit of commitment has made sure that the resller ecosystem is empowered to achieve the highest level of competence in the rapidly evolving enterprise, whilst powering the customer’s journey to digitization to be and effective. Suren Vedantham, the Managing Director of StorIT, welcomes me to his office that is abuzz with the celebrations (Yes, the celebrations do not seem to cease, nor does the spirit of the team members). I cannot help but ask Suren- ‘So in these 15 years, for StorIT, what has changed and

what has not changed?’ Suren says, “Our unwavering commitment to the fundamental principles of business that create extraordinary value to our partners, both vendors and resellers, remains the most consistent factor throughout the last 15 years of distinguished accomplishment in the Data Management Solutions domain. Our enthusiasm to remain at the cutting edge of technology helps us create growth opportunities and stay ahead of the curve. On the other hand, there is an uncompromising commitment to constantly raise the bar in our customer service standards by introducing ingenuity to all aspects of our business.” With some of its recent partnerships with Tintri, Commvault etc, the VAD is all set to redefine the storage and services market with some new paradigm that is synonymous to nothing but value all the way— value to the partners, value to the customers.
MERGING WITH THE NEW REALITIES Going forward with the new realities of IoT, business intelligence and an extremely sophisticated data-driven business, storage solutions and models are expected to live up to the rising demands of having the capability to be compatible and integrated with virtualization and cloud platforms. Converge infrastructure has also become the most compelling building block of data centre infrastructure today. Talking about how StorIT is enabling its resellers to adapt with these realities, Suren says, “StorIT, with its unparalleled domain expertise in the Data Management Solutions space, acts an enabler to its reseller partners with respect to early adoption of emerging technologies that help them capitalize on the business opportunities presented by the regional economies. This could range from demand generation activities & technology training programs, to enterprise projects management & support services. There is a concerted effort, in collaboration with our vendor partners, to map the emerging business opportunities to the delivery readiness of our resellers.
THE UNIQUE VALUE PROPOSITION By leveraging on its strong channel network, StorIT has been providing extensive market reach to its vendors that could secure significant market share and a sustained growth opportunity in the region. StorIT has always emphasized on ‘Value’ throughout its journey in the last 15 years. Not only that, the VAD has also been instrumental in pioneering and bringing new and niche solutions to the region. “StorIT’s unique value proposition
52
O CTO B E R 2017
has always been its ability to provide cutting-edge turnkey data management solutions based on the very best of breed technologies. And our vendor partners, who are world’s leading technology providers in their respective areas of expertise, are key to our success,” says Suren. We have also had the opportunity to talk to some of the VAD’s leading resellers who further testified the sheer rapport that they share with the company and the team mates. “StorIT’s team of certified experts supports its partners right from business development planning through consultancy, design, proof of concept, project implementation and support services. Infact, StorIT was the foremost VAD partner for our vendor to have implemented the first hyperconverged infrastructure solution in the region a couple of years ago,” adds Suren.
ON THE DESK FOR GITEX 2017 The VAD is all set to make some rare customer conversations leading up to the essentiality of investing in data management solutions, whilst having a keen eye on its partner network as well. As the region’s appetite for cost effective and optimized storage solutions increase, StorIT believes that it is best positioned to addressed this need and be the partner of choice. StorIT stated that it will promote its turnkey solutions portfolio including data storage, backup, data protection, information management and high performance computing solutions from vendor partners such as Dell EMC, Commvault, Arcserve, Tintri, Quantum, Haszone, Mellanox, SAS, ATTO and Supermicro and also highlight its value added services such as business need assessment, architecture and proof of design to optimise solutions to customer requirement and its managed services. StorIT’s vendors will focus on the latest innovations in the IT space through its presentations.
FINALLY While it is always easy to say that the grass is greener on the other side, few people take the effort to water the grass that they are standing on. StorIT, as a responsibility-driven value added distributor has not only walked the extra mile in possessing commendable domain expertise and an efficient solutions delivery mode but has remained untouched by the fragile market circumstances. Year on year the VAD has just focused on building its worth by adding the right set of partners and vendors, sometimes keeping it a low-key affair but the dart has hit the bullseye and the success has echoed. ë
