Despite investments in defence, attackers continue to innovate, developing advanced email-borne threats that are no match for defence systems. Mimecast will use the region’s largest security conference to educate IT decision makers about the need to provide comprehensive security controls before, continuity during, and automated recovery after an attack,” Bekker added.
Businesses at Risk Due to Unidentified Network Traffic Sophos released the findings of its global survey, The Dirty Secrets of Network Firewalls, which revealed that IT managers cannot identify 45% of their organization’s network traffic. In fact, nearly one-in-four cannot identify 70% of their network traffic. The lack of visibility creates significant security challenges for today’s businesses and impacts effective network management. The survey polled more than 2,700 IT decision makers from mid-sized businesses in 10 countries including the US, Canada, Mexico, France, Germany, UK, Australia, Japan, India, and South Africa. Considering the debilitating impact cyber-attacks can have on a business, it’s unsurprising that 84 percent of respondents agree that a lack of application visibility is a serious security concern. Without the ability to identify what’s running on their network, IT managers are blind to ransomware, unknown malware, data breaches and other advanced threats, as well as potentially malicious applications and rogue users. Network firewalls with signature-based detection are unable to provide adequate visibility into application traffic due to a variety of factors such as the increasing use of encryption, browser emulation, and advanced evasion techniques. “If you can’t see everything on your network, you can’t ever be confident that your organization is protected from threats. IT professionals have been ‘flying blind’ for too long and cybercriminals take advantage of this,” said Dan Schiappa, senior vice president and general manager of products at Sophos. “With governments worldwide introducing stiffer penalties for data breach and loss, knowing who and what is on your network is becoming increasingly important. This dirty secret can’t be ignored any longer.”

Carbon Black to Showcase Cb Predictive Security Cloud (PSC) at GISEC
RICK MCELROY, SECURITY STRATEGIST FROM CARBON BLACK
Carbon Black will be participating at GISEC for the fourth consecutive year, which will be held at the Dubai World Trade Centre from 1st to 3rd of May 2018 in conjunction with IoTx, under the umbrella of The Future of Technology Week. Carbon Black will showcase the Cb Predictive Security Cloud™, a converged endpoint protection platform that deliv-
ers next-generation security and IT operations services through the cloud and ensures products and services are delivered in an effective and timely manner. Traditional endpoint security programs often require multiple, independent systems running their own resource-intensive agents, which can bog down end users and complicate platform management. We believe the Cb
Predictive Security Cloud provides a comprehensive and effective approach to endpoint protection, delivering greater visibility and better prevention capabilities to combat today’s advanced threats. Carbon Black will also be discussing the recently launched Cb Integration Network (CbIN), a technology partner program designed to improve cybersecurity through collective defence and powered by Carbon Black’s open APIs and the PSC. Rick McElroy, Security Strategist from Carbon Black said: “There are growing concerns around advanced threats across the Middle East and companies in the region are keen to build and maintain strong change management and quality assurance practices to combat cybercriminals. During GISEC 2018, we will be showcasing how these companies can leverage the power of the Cb Predictive Security Cloud.”
SANS Experts Share Five Most Dangerous New Attack Techniques
JAMES LYNE, HEAD OF RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT, SANS INSTITUTE
Experts from SANS recently presented the five most dangerous new cyber-attack techniques in their annual RSA keynote session in San Francisco, and shared their views on how they work, how they can be stopped or at least slowed, and how businesses and consumers can prepare. The five threats outlined are: 1) Repositories and Cloud Storage Data Leakage. 2) Big Data Analytics, De-Anonymization, and Correlation. 3) Attackers Monetize Compromised Systems Using Crypto Coin Miners. 4) Recognition of Hardware Flaws. 5) More Malware and Attacks Disrupting ICS and Utilities Instead of Seeking Profit. Ed Skoudis, a top hacker exploits expert, SANS Faculty Fellow and lead for the SANS Penetration Testing Curriculum, talked about the data leakage threats facing us from the increased use of repositories and cloud storage: “Software today is built in a very different way than it was 10 or even 5 years ago, with vast online code repositories for collaboration and cloud data storage hosting missioncritical applications. However, attackers are increasingly targeting these kinds of repositories and cloud storage infrastructures, looking for passwords, crypto keys, access tokens, and terabytes of sensitive data.” He continued: “Defenders need to focus on data inventories, appointing a data curator for their organization and educating system architects and developers about how to secure data assets in the cloud. Additionally, the big cloud companies have each launched an AI service to help classify and defend data in their infrastructures. And finally, a variety of free tools are available that can help prevent and detect leakage of secrets through code repositories.”

SCOTT MANSON, CYBERSECURITY LEAD - MIDDLE EAST AND AFRICA, CISCO
Cisco to Advocate That it’s Time to Put Security Above Everything Cisco will address the maturing and more sophisticated tradecraft by attackers and will spotlight how adversaries are evolving their approaches to exploit new technology security gaps at this
year’s Gulf Information Security Expo & Conference (GISEC). Themed, Security Above Everything, Cisco believes that organisations need to start building an industry wide culture – whether they
are moving to the cloud, launching a new product, bringing on new digital devices – where security must be top of mind and integrated seamlessly into everything the organisations does. As a Platinum Partner, Cisco will address why securing networks and IT infrastructure is mission-critical for businesses to succeed today and build for tomorrow and discuss the evolving role of security. “Cisco delivers the breadth of innovation, so network and security teams can set the pace for securing their organisations with the visibility and protection necessary for users and workloads that drive business. Our portfolio is built on coordinated threat intelligence becoming an action to detect, prevent or respond. If we want to succeed in the fight to protect our networks, it’s time to put Security Above Everything,” said Scott Manson, Cybersecurity Lead – Middle East and Africa, Cisco. “Defenders are implementing a complex mix of products from a cross-section of vendors to protect against breaches. This complexity and growth in breaches has many downstream effects on an organization’s ability to defend against attacks, such as increased risk of losses. Today, nearly half of all legitimate security alerts are not remediated, and it’s clear that a more cohesive approach is required. Cisco’s deep and broad view of threat data across endpoint, network and cloud, through email, web, and applications means that we know more about what is trying to attack our customers and therefore how to stop it from succeeding,” Scott Manson concluded.
