IoT Boom sparks tech cycle in MENA In the dynamic landscape of 2023, the proliferation of AI-driven tools and innovations is compelling organisations worldwide to rethink their technology adoption strategies. Ahmad El Soufi, Sr. Systems Engineer – Extreme Networks, META

T

he surge in AI-driven tools and innovations, particularly in 2023, has challenged entities around the world to consider whether they are maximising their use of available technologies. The objective is to stay ahead of the competition by not just adopting the latest technologies but actively creating opportunities around them. A recent report by McKinsey on the state of AI adoption in GCC countries highlights that while our region exhibits awareness and willingness to harness AI-related technologies, there is untapped potential. Currently, the primary application area appears to be in marketing and sales, rather than supply chain management or business operations. Further, many entities would significantly benefit from deploying more sophisticated AI technologies such as machine learning and analytics to support more strategic data-driven decision making. Companies wanting to seize these opportunities to differentiate themselves have ample avenues to do so. However, I believe that the IoT boom will also play a pivotal role in advancing the region’s AI aspirations, due to the synergy between the two technologies. According to IoT Analytics, by 2027 there will likely be more than 29 billion IoT devices connected globally. This will represent an

incredible amount of data for companies to delve into, which is essential for the success of AI applications. Currently, the McKinsey report notes that companies that have not yet integrated IoT as a tool to capture meaningful insights may be facing high costs for AI adoption, making it unaffordable for many smaller or mid-sized entities. But when companies invest in secure, scalable networking systems that facilitate secure IoT connections, they can generate more data that can boost AI’s ability to learn

The influx of new IoT devices that will need to be connected to the network will have its own challenges. and become more intelligent. The availability of usable data beforehand helps reduce the initial costs of setting up AI technologies. Otherwise, companies would have to invest in additional resources and initiatives to gather the data needed to run AI tools. Further, the more intricate and stronger the connections between IoT devices, the higher the quality of reliable data, and hence the more complex AI applications that can be used to generate more

revenue which can then be invested back into IoT capabilities. And voila! The virtuous circle continues. To illustrate this in action, consider a key retail customer for Extreme Networks. This retail giant relies on our networking solutions to collect real-time insights on customer behavior and supply chain movements. Consequently, the company has launched several initiatives and offerings, including its digital concept store, click-and-collect, loyalty program, and scan-and-go options, all of which have enhanced purchase completion journeys and increased profitability. These digital offerings also enable the entity to continually gather customer data, both online and on-location, for future analysis. The IoT explosion isn’t limited to data-driven industries like retail. More IoT connections in factories and plants will lead to automated supply chain management and the utilisation of digital twin technology to maintain operational conditions. In healthcare facilities, interconnected networks will facilitate contactless technologies and predictive AI models for patient care. The prolific rise in usecases will drive deeper analytics that open new doors and opportunities for AI technologies across all major industries in the region. Of course, the influx of new IoT devices that will need to be connected to the network will have its own challenges. Here again the virtuous circle will come into play as AI and machine learning provide critical insights that enable better tracking, protection and on-going management of the devices to allow safe and secure IoT performance.

Identity Threat: One-Fifth of authentication requests malicious Digital identities have become a cybersecurity battleground, with a fifth of authentication requests coming from malicious automated systems.

I

n an age of digital identities and increasing threats from malicious actors, the battle for online security has become more complex than ever. Credential stuffing attacks, where attackers leverage stolen usernames and passwords to breach multiple systems, are a growing concern. To combat this, organizations are implementing various mitigations to protect their digital assets. F5 Labs recently conducted a study to explore the effects of these mitigations on credential stuffing attacks and shed light on the evolving landscape of identity-based threats. Mitigations and Their Effect: The study found that without mitigations in place, the average rate of automation in credential stuffing attacks was alarmingly high at 19.4%. However, when organizations proactively implemented measures to counter malicious traffic, this rate plummeted to just 6%. This significant reduction highlights the importance of effective mitigation strategies. Malicious automation, a key driver of credential stuffing attacks, allows attackers to maximize their attempts. When protections are in place, attackers tend to give up, seeking easier targets. This study showcases the extent to which digital identities are under attack and the vital role of mitigations. Mitigation’s Impact on Attack Sophistication: Mitigations not only reduce the overall attack rate but also influence the sophistication of

8

Malicious automation, a key driver of credential stuffing attacks, allows attackers to maximize their attempts. attacks. Before mitigations, most attacks were basic, with no attempt to emulate human behaviour or counteract bot protection. After implementing protections, the share of basic attacks fell significantly, from 64.5% to 44%. On the contrary, intermediate attacks, which make some effort to tamper with anti-bot solutions, increased from 12% to 27% postmitigation deployment. Advanced attacks, which closely emulate human behaviour, including mouse movement, keystrokes, and screen dimensions, increased from 20% to 23%. This suggests that attackers who persist after mitigations are more determined and sophisticated, using tools that mimic human actions or conceal their activities. Challenges for Defenders: Defenders face challenges in monitoring and detecting

identity-based threats. F5 Labs examined the supply chain of compromised credentials and discovered that as many as 75% of credentials submitted during attacks were not previously known to have been compromised. Attackers are adapting to defensive measures, such as the use of multi-factor authentication, by employing tactics like reverse proxy phishing and detection-evasion tools like AntiRed. The study found attackers setting up fake login pages to trick users into entering their credentials and using tools designed to bypass browser-based phishing analysis. Emerging Threats: As technology advances, new threats emerge. F5 Labs noted a new generation of threats, including the use of artificial intelligence in phishing calls, as observed on the Dark Web. AI-driven phishing calls represent a growing threat, driven by the increasing sophistication and declining costs of AI. The study underscores the importance of implementing anti-bot solutions and cryptography-based multi-factor authentication to mitigate malicious automation and strengthen defences. As threats continue to evolve, defenders must monitor and adapt to combat vulnerabilities inherent in systems where user identity verification is essential. Understanding the impact of mitigations on credential stuffing attacks and staying ahead of emerging threats is crucial in safeguarding digital identities and assets.

It aligns with the broader trend of digital transformation in the Middle East. Technologies like WAN and Edge Computing will be crucial in achieving these technology goals and reshaping the landscape.

The Confluence of WAN and Edge WAN is the backbone of modern connectivity and has been crucial in ensuring businesses stay globally connected. However, it’s the integration with Edge Computing that takes this to the next level. Edge Computing involves processing data closer to its source, reducing latency, and allowing for real-time decision-making. This is especially crucial in scenarios where immediate actions can make a tremendous difference. By placing computing resources at the edge of the network, organisations can harness the power of local data processing, making WAN even more efficient and responsive.

Real-time Analytics at the Edge One of the primary benefits of combining WAN and Edge is the ability to perform realtime analytics. Whether dealing with IoT devices, cybersecurity threats, or dynamic datasets, the Edge empowers you to act swiftly and decisively. Consider the scenario of autonomous vehicles. When two self-driving cars are on a collision course, there’s no room for delay. Edge Computing ensures these vehicles can communicate and make split-second decisions without relying on data centres located miles away. This capability has the potential to save lives and prevent catastrophic accidents. This is one of the many examples and possibilities that the blend of WAN and Edge can transform businesses, making them more responsive and efficient.

Data Relevance in a Fastchanging World In the digital age, data has a rapidly diminishing shelf life. Traditional data processing, where information is sent to a centralised data centre, can take weeks or even months before actionable insights are derived. This lag is no longer acceptable in industries where rapid decision-making is vital. Edge Computing ensures that data remains relevant. For instance, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the scientific community faced an avalanche of new data and discoveries daily. Traditional data processing methods would have made it nearly impossible to keep up with the ever-evolving knowledge. However, with

Edge Computing, researchers can analyse data as it arrives, enabling them to adapt to changing circumstances rapidly. This agility also extends to sectors such as finance and retail, where real-time fraud detection is critical. Machine learning algorithms can spot anomalies in financial transactions, preventing fraudulent activities as they occur. Social media platforms can use the same technology to detect and curtail cyberbullying and the spread of fake news, creating safer online spaces.

Scaling with Ease Scalability is a significant concern for businesses with vast networks of IoT devices and sensors. Centralised data processing can easily become overwhelmed, resulting in inefficiencies and delays. Edge Computing steps in to streamline data capture, processing it closer to the source, alleviating the burden on central systems. Whether in retail, finance, or healthcare, this approach prevents bottlenecks, ensuring seamless real-time actions. The ability to scale up and down as needed is a gamechanger in the digital age. Integrating WAN and Edge Computing represents a monumental leap forward in business and technology. Real-time analytics, relevance of data, and seamless scalability are just a few of the benefits that this partnership offers. In an age where speed and efficiency are paramount, organisations that harness the power of WAN and Edge will lead the way in innovation, customer service, and problem-solving. As businesses strive to stay at the forefront of their industries, WAN and Edge Computing are the tools that empower them to do so. The prominence of these technologies is rapidly gaining traction. A 2022 study highlighted that the Middle East market for edge computing is projected to expand from $36.5 billion in 2021 to $87.3 billion by 2026, reflecting a CAGR of 19%. The region is witnessing growing investments in areas like the UAE’s National Artificial Intelligence Strategy 2031, Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, and Oman’s Vision 2040 as part of national initiatives, among many others. These investments are poised for further expansion in the future. The ability to process data at the network’s edge, whether for life-saving decisions, fraud prevention, or realtime analytics, opens up a world of possibilities. In an interconnected world, living on the edge isn’t just an option; it’s a necessity for those who seek to thrive in the digital age.

Five reasons why edge is an essential component to future proof computing In an era where data serves as the driving force of progress, both in the corporate world and the public sector, it has become abundantly clear that the traditional approach of centralised data repositories is no longer sufficient.

D

ata has become the engine of progress. Private enterprises use it to optimise experiences, enhance operations, improve customer services and invent new business models. Governments use it to build the cities of the future, to plan for the consumption of utilities and energy resources, and to manage crises such as the COVID pandemic. But centralised repositories for data are becoming obsolete and legacy approaches for accessing insights will not work for future minded organisations. Forward thinking organisations should be planning at the edge because it is where the data is created. Those that do not invest in the edge risk being left behind by these new environments. Gartner predicts that by 2025, 75% of all data processing will take place at the edge. It’s clear that now is the time to invest in edge computing capabilities. Here are five reasons why organisations should do this today.

where data is generated. Processing occurs at the outer reaches of an organisation’s environment instead of forcing data to make a trip ‘back to base’, which may be a data centre that is hundreds, if not thousands, of miles away. By enabling data to be stored at the edge, organisations get faster response times and can more easily deliver real-time insights. Applications at the edge will then be able to distil, process, and visualise data, displaying rich, actionable information on the spot. This ability is critical for essential and cutting-edge applications across industries. Manufacturing firms can deliver predictive maintenance, repairing equipment before it degrades or breaks down. Healthcare providers can leverage advanced monitors, sensors, and other devices that greatly enhance diagnosis and treatment. The transportation industry is being disrupted by autonomous vehicles.

Faster response times

Another key benefit of edge computing is business continuity. In the event of disruption or downtime in a centralised data centre, sites at the

Edge computing architecture places apps, data, and resources closer to

MEA

Greater resilience

|

Transporting data from the edge to a centralised data centre for processing brings with it cost increases and latency hikes.

edge can continue to operate independently since the infrastructure is local. That is just the beginning. Edge platforms allow faster, more consistent, and more reliable services, enhancing customer and employee experiences across industries and use cases.

Economical data movement When assessing edge computing as a businessviable proposition, the term “data gravity” emerges. One estimate suggests that by 2024, Forbes Global 2000 enterprises will be creating 1.1 million gigabytes each second. But there are time and monetary expenses to moving this data around — increasing network bandwidth to accommodate more devices and data comes at significantly higher costs. Instead of constantly streaming data and consuming large amounts of bandwidth, edge computing can help because it processes data in place and only delivers the most important information to the central location. Edge computing also reduces

G U E S T

C O L U M N

|

connectivity costs by moving smaller amounts of data between the edge and data centres.

Security and data sovereignty The UAE and other countries have strict data residency regulations that restrict the moving of data across national boundaries. Edge computing’s ability to process data on site leads to more straightforward compliance. Not only that; when transmitting to the data centre, the edge can encrypt packets of data, which may be important if the data centre is governed by different data security laws than the edge location.

Innovation Technologies such as AI and ML are gaining widespread acceptance in the region because businesses know they can enhance competitiveness. Edge computing enables the latest in AI, automation, and the Internet of Things (IoT) by feeding algorithms the latest and most pertinent data sets. Sensors connected to edge machinery can act on ML models by passing far less data back and forth than was used to create the model in the first instance. It speeds up time to action from an AI or ML algorithm because there isn’t time lost to network latency and the amount of data being moved is minimised to only the essential. Therefore, the rate to insight is vastly increased, which can improve innovation.

The competitive edge

Fred Lherault Field CTO, EMEA - Emerging Markets

Transporting data from the edge to a centralised data centre for processing brings with it cost increases and latency hikes. Not only that — it’s not necessary to transport all data back to a centralised location. In a world where unstructured data is growing exponentially — every single piece of data isn’t going to add value and be strategically important to an organisation. There needs to be a gatekeeper — both a physical device and also a skilled person who can differentiate between strategic and non-strategic information which doesn’t need to be moved around. This differentiation will enable innovation and provide competitive advantage. Edge locations can be managed simply with automation: infrastructure-as-code can deploy and maintain across many sites easily, no matter if they are edge or centrally located. A distributed analytics platform can then analyse data from anywhere without bringing it back to a central location first. This will speed up time to insight and add a further level to differentiation.

Why business risk observability is essential for sustainable cybersecurity In the digital landscape of today, modern applications face an ever-present threat of cyberattacks.

M

odern applications are under the constant threat of attack. Last year, Red Hat found that 93% of businesses had experienced at least one security incident in their Kubernetes environments in the previous 12 months. Of these, nearly a third (31%) went on to experience financial or customer loss. What’s worse — such breaches are only set to increase as organisations across the globe ramp up their cloud initiatives. With reputation and revenues on the line, IT teams are facing unrelenting pressure. On one hand, they must bring new applications to market at ever faster speeds, while on the other, they must remain acutely aware that deployment of cloud native technologies is leaving their applications increasingly vulnerable to attack. As governments in the Middle East outline their cloud-first policies, the security of containers and Kubernetes has become a top concern for DevOps, engineering and security professionals. This is encouraging, as in recent years, security programs haven’t kept pace with accelerated digital transformation. This is evidenced, in a recent Cisco study wherein 92% of technologists admitted that rapid innovation during the

56

N OV E M B E R 2 0 2 3

MEA

pandemic has come at the expense of robust application security. The problem is that it is only set to get worse. With Gartner predicting that 95% of new digital workloads will be deployed on cloud native platforms by 2025, we can expect bad actors to increasingly look to exploit vulnerabilities within Kubernetes environments. IT teams that are already struggling to secure applications urgently need to find a more sustainable approach to manage this heightened level of threat. For most, this will mean embracing new security approaches and tools.

Growing attack surfaces require IT teams to think application security refresh Much like the users they serve, applications today are becoming increasingly distributed. This expands the potential attack surface area dramatically. Whether it’s greater deployment of Internet of Things (IoT) and connected devices or new hybrid working models, technologists are having to contend with an ever more fragmented and complex security landscape. The sheer volume of applications spread across microservicebased application architectures has made monitoring security throughout

A business risk score highlights which business transactions present the greatest risk to the business

Joe Byrne CTO Advisor, Cisco AppDynamics

the DevOps pipeline extremely challenging. Moreover, the ability of many IT teams to identify and pinpoint vulnerabilities is greatly inhibited by the gaping visibility gaps that exist across their Kubernetes environments. The move to cloud native technologies has exposed the shortcomings of traditional vulnerability scanning solutions. Two thirds of technologist’s report that their current security solutions work well in silos but not together, meaning that they can’t get a high-level view of how a vulnerability could impact critical application components, nor can they assess which issues represent the biggest risk to the business. The rise of modern, cloud-native applications has also highlighted the lack of collaboration between development, operations and security teams, which in many cases has resulted in security being treated as an afterthought.

Business risk observability, a need for technologist to manage application security The challenges outlined above call for a new approach to managing application security. IT teams can no longer afford to worry only about

the next potential breach. Rather, they need to lay the foundations for a more sustainable approach to innovation. They must come together with development and operations teams to effectively tackle security within Kubernetes environments and to reap the full benefits of modern application stacks over the coming years. To achieve this, organisations need expanded visibility into cloud-native environments, and they need business context on their security intelligence. This is where business risk observability comes in to offer an effective solution. This paradigm enables IT teams to locate and isolate security issues across application entities — whether that’s business transactions, services, workloads, pods or containers. Being able to correlate security issues across application entities allows technologists to reduce metrics such as meantime to detect (MTTD). However, on its own, this level of unified visibility isn’t enough. IT teams also need to be able to group and filter vulnerabilities based on entities in order to view a prioritized list of the vulnerabilities that could affect a core area of

the application. And they still need a way to cut through the crippling data noise to focus their attention on the issues that matter most. Business risk observability offers context by combining security intelligence with application performance data. This enables IT teams to assess and prioritize risk and remediate security issues based on potential business impact. A business risk score highlights which business transactions present the greatest risk to the business. For instance, technologists can immediately see the sensitivity of customer data associated with a particular business transaction. It means that overworked security teams prioritize far better, thus instantly becoming more effective. As organisations continue to churn out ever-growing numbers of applications, the case for business risk observability becomes increasingly clear. As many as 93% of technologists believe that it’s now important to be able to contextualize security and to prioritize vulnerability fixes based on potential business impact. IT leaders now need to implement the right tools and processes to accelerate this transition.
