Tips to stay out of the phishing trap Phishing is as common in the public sector as it is in the private sector and besides the obvious financial implications, there is also the issue of damage to the reputation of the enterprise.

Bashar Bashaireh, Managing Director & Head of Sales - Middle East and Türkiye at Cloudflare multi-cloud environments and remote or hybrid workforces. A cloud email security solution anchored in the Zero Trust model challenges the assumption that emails from reputable domains or familiar senders are inherently secure. By doing so, organizations can disrupt the attackers’ ability to exploit trust in seemingly “known” entities.

Building Layers of Defense: AntiPhishing Controls Navigating the Perils of Phishing: A Holistic Approach to Email Security In the ever-evolving landscape of cybersecurity, email remains the Achilles’ heel of organizational defenses. As the gateway to vast amounts of sensitive information, it is no surprise that phishing attacks continue to plague businesses across sectors. The 2023 Phishing Threats Report by Cloudflare sheds light on the persistent challenges posed by attackers, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive strategy to stay out of the phishing trap.

Rethinking Email Security: The Zero Trust Paradigm In the realm of cybersecurity, the “castleand-moat” mentality has long been the norm. However, relying on predefined trust for certain individuals and systems in an email ecosystem is akin to leaving the front door unlocked in the digital realm. The paradigm shift towards a Zero Trust security model becomes imperative. Trust no one and nothing; this mantra is especially crucial in the era of

A robust defense against phishing requires a multi-layered approach. Cloudflare’s report underscores the effectiveness of preemptive measures in high-risk areas, such as real-time blocking of novel attacks and exposure of malware-less financial fraud. Adopting an array of anti-phishing controls, including the automatic isolation of suspicious links and attachments, adds an extra layer of protection. This approach is pivotal in identifying and thwarting data exfiltration, particularly through cloud-based email and collaboration tools. Collaboration among email security vendors, as highlighted in The Forrester Wave, ensures a cohesive defense strategy, enabling seamless data sharing and integration with the broader security tech stack.

Enhancing Authentication: The Role of Multi-Factor Authentication While any form of multi-factor authentication (MFA) is a step in the right direction, not all methods offer the same level of security. The recommendation to prioritize hardware security keys underscores the importance of implementing proven methods to counter phishing attacks successfully. Organizations

should consider upgrading from less secure MFA methods, such as SMS or time-based OTP, to FIDO-2 compliant MFA implementations. Applying the principle of least privilege, coupled with network segmentation, further fortifies defenses, limiting potential damage even if attackers breach MFA controls.

Mitigating Human Error: Making Security Inherent The human element remains a significant variable in the security equation. Recognizing the diverse preferences and tools used by different teams within an organization, it is crucial to meet employees where they are. Integrating security measures directly into the tools employees already use, such as email link isolation combined with remote browser isolation technology, minimizes the reliance on user vigilance. By automating the blocking and isolation of domains hosting phishing links, organizations reduce the risk of human error, making it harder for individuals to inadvertently compromise security.

Cultivating a Cyber-Resilient Culture Beyond technological solutions, fostering a cybersecurity culture is paramount. Establishing a paranoid yet blame-free environment encourages open communication regarding suspicious activities and genuine mistakes. This “see something, say something” approach creates a collaborative atmosphere between employees and IT/security incident response teams. In the critical minutes during a cyber attack, this proactive reporting culture becomes a linchpin, ensuring swift responses and containment of incidents.

Positive Technologies: ransomware gangs threaten to publish victims’ data

Alexey Novikov, Head of the Positive Technologies Expert Security Center

Positive Technologies experts have presented a study of the Q3 2023 cybersecurity threatscape. The share of malware attacks remained unchanged from Q2 at 45%. The advent of decryption tools reduced the effect of encryption malware, causing its share to shrink. Ransomware gangs now threaten to publish stolen information without encrypting the compromised systems or data. According to our analysis, Q3 2023 saw a slight decrease in the total number of cyberincidents from the previous quarter. With 37% of total incidents, exploitation of vulnerabilities remained a popular method for attacking organizations. The share of malware attacks in Q3 2023 remained unchanged from the previous quarter at 45%. Throughout the quarter, cyberextortionists continued to demand ransoms for not disclosing information, while in several cases refraining from

encrypting the data in the targeted systems. Novikov also noted a unique tactic used by the ransomware group Ransomed.vc. The group, which presents its malicious activities as a pentesting service, is abusing the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR): should the victim refuse to pay up, the hackers publish the data they stole from the organization, which results in it being fined for failure to protect the data. The expert named this tactic “lawful extortion”. According to Positive Technologies, the share of spyware attacks on individuals in Q3 increased to 65%. Spyware infections were detected in 20% of successful attacks on organizations, a figure that remains unchanged since Q2. More than half (57%) of all corporate infections with various types of malwares occurred through email.

With UAE consumers gearing up for the annual end of year holiday shopping sales, new data from Cisco AppDynamics reveals that a majority of these shoppers will rely on applications and digital services to get what they need. Compared to 2022, this year, 70% of UAE consumers plan to do more of their holiday shopping online, via applications and digital services. The study, which surveyed 12,000 consumers across 12 countries — including 1000 consumers in the UAE — explored consumer intentions, behaviors, and preferences when it comes to online shopping during the holiday season. On average, UAE consumers expect that 68% of their holiday shopping spend this year will be through applications and digital services,

compared to an estimated 61% last year. The biggest driver for this uptick in preference for online shopping is that 52% of UAE consumers feel that they can get better choice online than in stores. UAE consumers also cited ability to shop during working hours (34%), wanting to avoid last minute panic buying in store (32%) and ability to shop outside of normal retail hours or at convenient times for them (24%) as key reasons for preferring to shop online this upcoming holiday season. For online retailers in the UAE, this represents a huge opportunity to attract new customers and drive revenues. But the pressure on brands to deliver seamless digital experiences is also higher than ever before.

The rate of devastating ransomware attacks and the increasing frequency of natural disasters are upending business continuity more often each day. While many organizations recognize the importance of a disaster recovery (DR) plan, current DR solutions on the market are complex, expensive, and disruptive. Likewise, the current energy crisis, new environmental regulations, and ethical imperatives to improve corporate sustainability have led companies to set ambitious netzero goals, but reckoning with the typical data center’s power demands has remained challenging. And with digitization at scale and data proliferation and fragmentation, end-to-end operations management further aggravates the skill and budget shortages for IT.
