Investments are pouring in, acquisitions are leading the way, predictions are going helterskelter and diversification is emerging as the novel way of tapping unconquered territories.

If these are a pretty lot to go in one sentence, then imagine a market that is witnessing all of these.

A few days back, Avaya rang the opening bell and started trading in the NYSE and soon after that the company also acquired Spoken Communications—a transaction that will be funded by cash including 170 patents and patent applications. Three tech giants are in the race to become America’s first $1tn company— Apple, Amazon and Alphabet. While Apple rose to its current balance sheet with record sales for iPhone 10, Amazon’s AWS has helped the company climb up the curve, apart from an increased investment in Alexa. Alphabet or rather Google’s market dominance in AI is set to go up the ladder, but still experts say that the majority revenue comes from its search engine ads and YouTube.

Coming to the region, investments in Fintech and Blockchain have been soaring. Our cover story on Fintech market in this issue talks about the disruption in the financial services market and features some fintech start-ups who have some niche offerings for the enterprises.

3D printing is one more area where a lot of investment in pouring in, specially from the government, in line with the Dubai 3D print strategy— aiming 25% of the regional infrastructure to be 3D printed by 2030. Diversifying from oil, KSA is up for a complete economic upheaval, following vision 2030. Our focus story delves into the discrete models of investment in the kingdom.

2018 seems to be a good year. Clever decisions and mindful investments would surely go a long way in addressing the existing pain points. We would definitely be seeing some great acquisitions coming along in the next quarters.

All the above aiming for one aspect— living the digital reality and providing ultimate customer experience. Adding profits to the balance sheet would definitely be the priority for any business; the race to revenue will certainly continue and being in technology business would definitely open more doors of opportunity.

The Nutanix Enterprise Cloud OS software, combined with the Nutanix AHV hypervisor, allows the operator to rapidly analyse data, leading to better decision making and freeing up resources so that their organizations can focus on their key strength – innovating new products and services for its customers.

The Nutanix Enterprise Cloud OS software combines compute, storage, and virtualisation, as well as providing analytics, allowing for further business optimisation. Through manually inputting data which is then analysed through AI, the TrainingCalendar platform will tell a visitor which job is more relevant to them, using a percentage match indicator.

Partnered with six executive education providers including Harvard University in the United States, universities can also utilise the platform by posting details of a particular curriculum or course online. The AI-powered software will then tell the user what the skills outcome of that course/curriculum will be and what jobs graduates can apply for. Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Approves DAFZA’s ‘Digital Intelligence Plan’

H.H. Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of Dubai Airport Freezone Authority (DAFZA), has approved DAFZA’s ‘Digital Intelligence Plan 2018-2020’ developed in line with digital transformation initiatives such as the ‘Dubai Internet of Things Strategy (IOT)’ and the ‘UAE Strategy for Artificial Intelligence,’ the first major initiative within the UAE Centennial 2071 project.

The new plan was developed in partnership with Deloitte Consulting LLC, and is in line with both DAFZA’s ‘Strategic Plan 2017-2021’ and ‘DAFZA Innovation Strategy,’ the latter supporting DAFZA’s stature as one of the most innovative and progressive free zone in the world in accordance with the objectives of the ‘National Innovation Strategy’ which aims to make the UAE one of the world’s most innovative countries by 2021. H.H. Sheikh Ahmed emphasized the importance of technological development and the adoption of modern technologies in various fields in supporting the transformation of Dubai into the smartest and happiest city in the world.

To establish an integrated and sustainable digital system, DAFZA’s new strategy is based on three main areas: ‘Operational Model,’ ‘ICT Services,’ and ‘Technology Platform Revamp.’

WORLDWIDE SEMICONDUCTOR REVENUE GREW 22.2 PERCENT IN 2017- GARTNER Worldwide semiconductor revenue totalled $419.7 billion in 2017, a 22.2 percent increase from 2016, according to preliminary results

by Gartner, Inc. Undersupply helped drive 64 percent revenue growth in the memory market, which accounted for 31 percent of total semiconductor revenue in 2017.

“The largest memory supplier, Samsung Electronics, gained the most market share and took the No. 1 position from Intel — the first time Intel has been toppled since 1992,” said Andrew Norwood, research vice president at Gartner. “Memory accounted for more than two-thirds of all semiconductor revenue growth in 2017, and became the largest semiconductor category.”

The key driver behind the booming memory revenue was higher prices due to a supply shortage. NAND flash prices increased year over year for the first time ever, up 17 percent, while DRAM prices rose 44 percent.

Other major memory vendors, including SK Hynix and Micron Technology, also performed strongly in 2017 and rose in the rankings. Second-placed Intel grew its revenue 6.7 percent in 2017, driven by 6 percent growth in data center processor revenue due to demand from cloud and communications service providers. Intel’s PC processor revenue grew more slowly at 1.9 percent, but average PC prices are on the rise again after years of decline following the market’s shift from traditional desktops toward two-in-one and ultramobile devices.

efore we start talking about Fintech, let us draw our attention to a word here. Unbanked— what relevance does this word hold in a world, that we claim is, standing on the disruptive platform of IoT and artificial intelligence. Let me cite an interesting study.

Despite the high penetration of smartphones and widespread internet connectivity, more than 80% of the population in the GCC region are ‘unbanked’ and every three in four banks customers are ready to switch their banks if they are given a better digital banking experience.

Dubai is set to become a leader in Fintech, going by the numerous studies and reports, and we believe that the time is just right and ripe. The need for increased customer satisfaction is driving the necessity and need for better, improved, agile and cost optimized services that not only come to your ‘phone’step but also give you the luxury of an omnichannel and omnigateway experience.

THE MARKET UPHEAVEL The great agenda of the GCC countries in leaving behind their oil legacies and investing in diversified sectors have led the way for small and medium businesses to rise up to the scene.

Fintech is further fueling this spring.

Last year, FinTech Hive was set up at the DIFC, the first FinTech accelerator in the region.

It has since become the most popular FinTech programme in the region, attracting over 45 global, regional and local partners and participants. DIFC recently announced plans to triple its commitment to FinTech for 2018 with a focus on RegTech and InsurTech.The centre is also launching a $100 million fund to support incubating and growth stage firms and to ensure that its FinTech proposition is the most comprehensive in the region.

partnership with Accenture, is a key component of FinTech Hive at DIFC. It consists of a 12-week curriculum in which a group of selected finalists work closely with financial institutions and other stakeholders. “We received an overwhelming number of applications for the programme — a testament to the demand for such an initiative — and the quality of proposals was very impressive,” said Raja Al Mazrouei, Acting Executive Vice President of FinTech Hive at DIFC. The programme will run for 12 weeks. In the first phase, each finalist will meet with executives from the accelerator’s financial institution partners — including Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank, Citi, Dubai Islamic Bank, Emirates Islamic, Emirates NBD, HSBC, Mashreq, Network International, RAKBANK, Standard Chartered and Visa — in which they will discuss industry challenges and possible solutions to address them. Participants will also meet with representatives from strategic partners, Dubai Islamic Economy Development Centre (DIEDC) and UAE Exchange.

Various fintech start-ups and emerging players have tried and tested this and are relying heavily on the impact of blockchain in fintech that would facilitates secure transactions without tampering the security protocols of either party involved.

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai launched the ‘Dubai 3D Printing Strategy’, a unique global initiative that aims to exploit technology for the service of humanity and promote the status of the United Arab Emirates and Dubai

as a leading hub of 3D printing technology by the year 2030.

UAE’S VISION 2030 The key goal of the country is to ensure that 25% of the buildings in Dubai are based on 3D printing technology by 2030. The ‘Dubai 3D Printing Strategy’ launched by His Highness adopts an emerging technology that will help cut cost in many sectors, especially the medical and construction sector in Dubai. The technology will restructure economies and labour markets, and redefine productivity. Through

the 3D Printing Strategy, the country aims to make Dubai a global hub for the development of this technology and a base for research and development in this area.

The Road and Transport Authority (RTA) has been one of the important organizations in positioning Dubai as one of the leaders globally in infrastructure achievements. In November 2017, RTA revealed its plans to implement 3D printing in projects as a part of its commitment to the country’s Smart City initiative. A pedestrian bridge, Hatta Gate, a bus stop and a marine station are the projects

THE KEY SECTORS Dubai 3D Printing Strategy will focus on three major sectors: construction, medical products and consumer products. The construction sector will focus on lighting products, construction joints, facilities and parks, stores and residential villas. Within the medical products sector, the focus will be on developing 3D printed teeth, bones, artificial organs, medical and surgical devices and hearing aids. The consumer products sector will focus on household items, optics, fashion jewellery, children’s games and fast food.

The CEO of Skriware, a Polish – Swedish start-up, Karol Górnowicz explains that 3D printing comes in handy in every sector caring for personalization and customization, from large building constructions to medical products. “With 3D printing, companies or individuals are able to make products testing numerous designs, including these unreachable with classic mass-manufacturing techniques while using variety of materials: plastics, resins, metals or even human cells. The opportunity to test different components easily, without logistics burden, and, what’s very important, in a cost-saving and timely fashion, can trigger

HUGE RESOURCES According to Tadawul data, Saudi Arabia’s economy accounts for around half the $1.6 trillion represented by the GCC overall, making it the biggest market in the Arab world. The land of Saudi has a treasure of natural resources apart from oil. It has promising sites of minerals such as gold, silver, copper, iron, platinum and other strategic materials. The country signed a $7 billion joint venture agreement with a metal group to mine bauxite reserves in the northern part of the kingdom. The plan is to produce 720,000 tons of aluminium per year. Saudi also plans to maximize solar and wind power in the country by generating 9.5 gigawatts of renewable energy.

However, as Saudi Arabia seeks to reduce its dependence on oil, ironically so does Saudi Aramco - the company has a series of initiatives

meant to make the use of oil more efficient. The company is investing in developing new ways to make the internal combustion engine more efficient and if successful in its efforts, it would be not only the world’s biggest oil producer, but also the owner of technology that makes its main selling product last longer.

NEOM PROJECT In October 2017, the government of Saudi revealed its plans to build a $500 billion mega city spanning three countries which will reshape the kingdom’s economy. The project called NEOM, will measure 10,230 square miles and powered completely by renewable energy, creating a pollution free environment. NEOM’s larger goal is to lessen the country’s reliance on oil exports which could expand Saudi’s economy. The city will focus on a variety of industries, including energy and water, biotechnology, food, advanced

manufacturing, and entertainment.

PLANNING AHEAD TO A NEW FUTURE The Kingdom looks at digitalization as an opportunity to enhance the lives of its citizens and drive economic progress. It expects ICT usage and digitalization to accelerate the execution of the Vision 2030 blueprint, driving economicdevelopment and enhancing national security.Among other sectors like manufacturing, mining tourism and healthcare sectorswill also benefit by embracing emerging technologies to enhance the services they offer. rganizations and cities in the GCC are going through a massive transformation. Both are riding the bandwagon of being ‘Smart’ and ‘Intelligence-driven’. From automated and digitized organizational infrastructure to smart roads, smart meters and smart grids in the city, IoT and data analytics are driving the race.

According to Data Age 2025, a report from Seagate and analyst firm IDC, it is predicted that data creation will swell to a total of 163 zettabytes (ZB) by 2025. Machine learning, automation and machine-to-machine technologies are shifting the bulk of data creation from consumers to the enterprise; in 2025 enterprises will create 60 percent of the world’s data.

Seagate has seen a massive growth in their surveillance and storage portfolio in 2017.

Stephen Jones, Surveillance Sales Engineer at Seagate said, “We closed our financial year very strongly with record shipments. We believe that we are very strongly positioned in the surveillance market and have an equally strong portfolio of surveillance and storage products.”

At Intersec 2018 Seagate exhibited its industry leading surveillance storage technologies, with demonstrations of its SkyHawk, SkyHawk AI and Exos X12 products and solutions from partners Hikvision and Dahua. “Skyhawk is from our hard drive family that is specifically designed and optimized for AI applications. AI and machine learning are the buzzwords now.

Though, at this moment, we are not certain where this trend will lead to in future, this is what people are excited about now. Today we are in a unique position to offer anything from HDD to surveillance to flash,” he adds.

Talking about the clash between providing customers with memory enough to store the massive amount of data and giving them the

facility to store what’s important and what’s not important, Stephen says, “Recording mundane amount of video recordings and retaining it is not what your operators want but to be alerted on what is important. Here, video analytics and AI plays a pivotal role. Our solutions and products deliver accurate, real time information to the operators so that they can efficiently drive the operations and also provide high level surveillance report. Furthermore, the largest component of this future growth will be in embedded devices such as security cameras, smart meters, chip cards and vending machines.

Technology – and storage in particular – will have an increasingly important role in tapping the potential of all this data,” he adds.

Talking about the future of enterprise storage, Stephen says that they are seeing a move to the edge. “The term edge is enterprise hardened storage that does not reside in poor or traditional data centers as we see a massive improvement in the processing power in the end device— here the end device being the camera. We will see more storage at the edge. It records the video, analyzes it, puts it to storage then retain the information for a period of time and take out the important stuff and offload that to the traditional cloud. This is where we see the future of storage going.”

Seagate is also investing heavily in its partner program. “We have recently changed our partner program and now it is called the Seagate insider. It is specifically designed for the Sis. From a strategic point of view, we see a demand creation in the market from the System Integrators.”

As a company that offers a broad portfolio of security, intelligence and operations solutions, this movement from integrated solutions to unified solutions strikes a meaningful chord. “Unified solutions are a step ahead of integrated solutions where a single platform can handle different task with the same interface,” says Firas. The market has been looking for more and more simplified solutions. When we talk about unification, it is about simplification.

If you integrate multiple solutions you have different technologies talking to each other.

Today we can see a majority of the solutions moving to the cloud. To provide cloud services, you have to give an easy to use interface. For eg; we have our solution for enterprise which is an advanced video management platform.

The interface is easy and the operator can use it with zero training. Similarly, we have a lot of solutions in our portfolio that can be deployed with zero training.”

Talking about Genetec’s go-to- market strategy, Firas says “We expanded to new territories and we have been going very aggressively to the market. We have always relied heavily relying on our channel to go to market and this trend will continue. We are hiring new business development managers who would be approaching the end users and educating them more about the market and our solutions portfolio.” The company has also simplified their software selling process, known as the perpetual license. “That is the way we have been selling for the past 20 years . But now customers are looking for subscription models as they are not willing to pay upfront. We were one of the few companies worldwide to offer the video management platform through

subscription while keeping our old way of selling software through perpetual license.”

Genetec recently unveiled Citigraf, a decision support system that unifies public safety operations across city departments for interagency collaboration. Apart from that, the company also released the latest version of its Security Center 5.7. This latest version allows users to make insight-driven decisions based on security and analytics data. 2017 has been great. Revolutionary change in the primary part of company’s datacenter did lead even more to gaps with regards to backup and recovery being too slow, overly complex and overall incumbent solutions being way too expensive. Those pains as well as strategic initiative drove more than ever the need for change.

One of your solution tagline reads ‘Immutability for Ransomware’- What is the claim behind this? How advanced is your ‘recovery with no data loss’ platform?

Applications and data are instantly accessible in an immutable format that is native to the Rubrik platform to safeguard against any attack with days, weeks or months of point-in-time instant recovery. Our filesystem is not accessible over File Services like many traditional backup software and hardware platforms and we don’t utilise a traditional Windows or Unix standard backup server as everything is managed by the Rubrik cluster intelligence. When a backupserver, proxy or fileserver mounts are infected, so are the backups or metadate in the solution of most vendors, this is not the case with Rubrik.

What is your review of the Middle East market? “We want to reinforce our position in the market showing that NetApp is a very strong player when it comes to physical security and has very rich offerings with its tech partners like Bosch, Milestone, Ipsotek, and videoNEXT and show that we not only play on premise but we also have cloud solutions that can support video surveillance, access control etc.

Market research shows that demand for security cameras in the Middle East is continuously growing, consequently boosting demand for data storage in the surveillance market. In the UAE, video surveillance spending could reach USD 197.8 million by 2021. The GCC video surveillance storage market is seen to expand at an annual growth rate of over 8.5 per cent from 2017 to 2023. However, capturing and retaining data from security cameras pose greater difficulty as higher resolutions are needed and retaining images for longer periods could slow video recall performance.

The increased demand for surveillance infrastructures also calls for bigger video storage capacity.

Speaking about inducing simplicity into the solutions offered, Fadi says NetApp has addressed these concerns by providing a complete line of external storage systems, which can deliver volume, speed, reliability and stability. The company expects its E-Series solution to meet the growing demand from customers seeking more flexibility in their data management requirements. The technology

is designed to meet the bandwidth-intensive streaming requirements of next-generation security cameras.

NetApp is also making sure that their ecosystem partners are up to date with the latest offerings and are empowered to take their solutions to the market. Fastlane is NetApp university’s authorized training center.

“Through Fastlane, we offer certification programs to enable the channel partners. We have also realized that partners that deliver solutions around physical security are different from those offering data center solutions. So, there are different kind of training programs for different ecosystem partners.”

Fadi believes that the emerging technologies in security have been successful in bridging the gap between the public and the private sector. The emergence of smart cities and smart organizations have created a set of standards and norms that both the private and public sector have to follow. “The private sectors need to adhere to the compliances and standards set by the government bodies like the ministry of interior, municipalities etc. As we always say, security is a shared responsibility and we can see the government organizations taking some active steps towards setting necessary regulations.”

AI, Cloud Control and Data Stewardship In the same way that a CFO sets out the strategy and framework for investment and cash flow, CIOs and CTOs need to take control of making dataflow work for their organizations.

DATA STEWARDSHIP MUST BECOME A CORE COMPETENCY IN 2018 Becoming an exemplary data steward or responding effectively to security incidents, is near impossible with systems that take days to backup, index or restore data. To get to the stage where this level of control and safeguarding is possible we are going to see significant investment during 2018 in faster networks, search and indexing. Tools and platforms to improve the visibility, manageability and performance of data pipelines in general will also see substantial investment. That said, organizations that rely on technology alone for GDPR compliance will struggle. There will also be significant cultural and procedural changes needed to achieve and maintain GDPR compliance. The right cultural approaches need to be led by senior management, and the right tools need to be implemented to support that behavior.

LEVERAGING AI AND MACHINE

LEARNING I believe that, across the full range of businesses, the benefits of Machine Learning (ML) are going to be felt more immediately. ML’s quick wins will be lower down in the business technology stack.
