PERSPECTIVES

TALENT IN ENSENADA TO ATTRACT HIGH-TECH INVESTMENT

The economic relationship we have in Baja California as part of the CALIBAJA region is one of continuous evolution and expansion with an increasing emphasis on the development of new technologies. In the city of San Diego itself, themaineconomicsectorsareHealthSciences, Software Development, Cybersecurity, Communications and Clean Technology (existing innovation clusters focused on technology and health sciences represent 76%); Additionally, Baja California has the largest medical device manufacturing hub in America and the most important concentration of companiesintheAerospaceIndustryinMexico.

Added to this by the strategic mandate of the United States government for the development of the semiconductor industry, the state of Arizona is integrated (being the number one state in the United States with the largest attraction of foreign direct investment), converting this convergence of the three states in a mega region of great technological advancementanddevelopment.

The availability of federal funds from the United States government concentrated in the three industrial development policy documents for theareasofmicroelectronics,

Battery technology and Cleantech represent more than a trillion dollars, which will boost investments in this new mega region and bring with it a high demand for talentinmanytechnologicalareas.

In this context, the city of Ensenada is well positioned to play a good role in the development, promotion and supply of talent, since for several decades Ensenada has been considered “The city of knowledge”, or as “the city with more scientistspercapitainMexico.”

Currently there are 11 highly developed research centers, with the Center for Scientific Research and Higher Education of Ensenada (CICESE),andtheCenterforNanosciencesand Nanotechnology (CNyN) of the Autonomous University of Mexico, the flagship research centers. , which gained the attention of companies such as Qualcomm to create alliancesinresearchprograms, educationand use of facilities for the development of Semiconductors (Qualcomm recently announced an investment of $200 million in Baja California to develop semiconductors). This particular situation of our city has influenced young people to seek to integrate into the study of various professional careers, having the highest enrollment percentage in Mexico with 87.6% (15% more than the average for Baja California and 19.8% above the average national). The analysis of a sample of students from the 8 main universities (representing 77% of the student body) shows that students opt for engineering (30%) and health sciences (21%) careers, this motivation of the students is aligned with the context of technological development of the mega region.InthenextweeksEnsenadawilljointhe Talent BC program (promoted by the PROBAJA initiative made up of the economic promotion organizations of the cities of the state and by the Secretary of Economy and Innovation of thestategovernment).

This program will implement what is called Talent Tables, where the main companies from the different economic sectors of the city (manufacturing, hospitality-gastronomy, health sciences, fishing-agriculture and technology development) will be linked directly with the main centers educational institutionsofthecityforthedevelopmentand implementation of complementary programs and careers that contribute to increasing the competitiveness of Ensenada. This integrative vision and the offer of graduates in the aforementioned careers represent the greatest opportunity to attract investment to thecityofEnsenada.
