How to Find the Best Cabin on Any Cruise Ship

From location to budget to hidden snags, follow these expert tips for finding the best room for you.

You’ve chosen the ship, sailing date and itinerary, and you’re already thinking about what will go in your bag. Now it’s time to select the perfect cabin for your time at sea. However, the sheer number of options and factors to consider can make your decision feel overwhelming.

So, which is the best cabin on a cruise ship? That depends on who’s sailing. Since the personalized service of a travel advisor ensures all your needs are met, we asked Ashley Curry — a St. Louis-based travel advisor who has been planning her clients’ cruise vacations for 16 years — to help solve the puzzle. Here are the top tips on what to look for and what to avoid to ensure you enjoy a smooth sailing.

PRIORITIZE LOCATION

Just like choosing a home on land, cruise cabin selection is all about location, location, location. Cabins on higher decks make for quicker access to the pools and sun decks, but the motion of the ocean can be more noticeable, especially towards the front of the ship. Lower-level cabins, on the other hand, are more stable but are farther away from top-deck amenities. Cabins in the middle of the ship strike a balance between stability and proximity to the action. “For someone who has never cruised or is hesitant, a cabin in the middle of the ship will reduce seasickness and shorten the distance between onboard venues,” Curry says.

AVOID HIDDEN SNAGS

Watch out for cabins with windows that are obstructed by lifeboat placements, maintenance equipment or bulkheads. Some options may also face the outdoor walking deck, which means a lack of privacy since passersby can sneak a peek when the lights are on. You can rely on your travel advisor to help you avoid these pitfalls.

Also beware of “Guarantee” cabins, a run-of-house arrangement that carries a lower price but with cabins assigned at the cruise line’s discretion. That means it could be anywhere on the ship, and once assigned, you cannot change it. Curry isn’t a fan due to the inability to select the cabin location — and again, your travel advisor is key to navigating these decisions.

ESCAPE THE NOISE

Choose with your ears: Since any amount of noise can affect your cruise experience, you’ll want to avoid cabins directly above or below public spaces like theaters, nightclubs and other venues where music

or rehearsals may disturb your sleep. Cabins directly below the sun deck can also be noisy due to foot traffic and crew rearranging furniture or cleaning. To further reduce the chance of noise, Curry recommends bunking on a deck with only cabins above and below. Be aware that rooms located near elevators and staircases, or those with connecting doors, may let in noise. And cabins at the front and back may feature the racket of the anchor and engine vibration, respectively. Crew service areas, which show up on the deck plan as blank spaces in the center of the ship, allow crew to move trolleys and cleaning carts in and out of hallways. This can be disruptive to nearby cabins — not the kind of room service you had in mind.

CONVENIENCE COUNTS

Think about how you want to spend your time onboard. If you plan on daily workouts, your children enjoy hanging out at the kids’ club, or you like easy access to the pool, pick a cabin nearby — saving a few minutes on each trip can add up. Travelers with mobility needs should prioritize cabins near an elevator. For any passenger who appreciates convenience, Curry recommends choosing a cabin no more than 10 doors from an elevator.

CONSIDER YOUR BUDGET

Cruise ship cabins are priced according to their location. Midship cabins come with higher price tags

because of their desirable position, while those near the front or back are less expensive due to potential motion and vibration. Naturally, cabins with limited views or privacy will also cost less. If you are on a budget, the price difference can be significant enough to influence your decision.

DON’T LEAVE IT LATE

Ultimately, travelers should consider their individual needs, habits and budget to find the cabin that is best for them. But timing is key: Cruise itineraries are released 12 to 18 months in advance, so book early for the best cabin selection.

The counsel of a professional travel advisor is just as important. “The ability to provide guidance, knowledge and firsthand experience will always exceed the internet, a call center with multiple strangers or a big-box store that only sells travel on the side from their main business,” says Curry. It’s always smart to get on board with good advice. 

Shore Excursions: An Insider’s Guide

Expert advice to make the most of each port of call on your next cruise.

Cruises offer plenty to see and do at sea, but it’s the destinations on shore that guests tend to remember most. In a recent survey of more than 7,000 travelers, the most important factor when booking a cruise was neither the ship nor splashy sales promotions, but the stops on the itinerary.

Although you’re always free to explore these ports of call on your own, a pre-booked shore excursion with local guides can lead you past the tourist traps surrounding the

terminal and straight to the city’s beating heart. Whether you’re interested in ancient history or contemporary cuisine, there’s likely an excursion that caters to your quirks, revealing different — yet equally authentic — facets of a destination that are often denied to travelers with mere hours ashore. Few appreciate this more than Pat Probert, a travel advisor based in Toronto, who recently sailed the Caribbean — his 102nd cruise voyage. Here, Probert shares his expert advice on navigating shore excursions for the perfect day in port.

PHOTO: JONATHAN W. COHEN/GETTY IMAGES (OSAKA CASTLE).

Book through the cruise line or your travel advisor

Lower prices might tempt you to book a shore excursion through a third-party vendor, but Probert warns there’s an inherent risk associated with those savings. “If you haven’t booked your excursion through the cruise line or your travel advisor and your tour is late in getting back to port, they’re not going to hold the ship for you,” he says. “Reputable third-party operators will guarantee to get you to the next port in time to rejoin your cruise, but still, that’s a situation you want to avoid.” If you’re looking for something that isn’t offered by the cruise line — hyper-local experiences such as home visits and artisan workshops, or private or small-group tours — talk to your travel advisor. They’ll be able to book with you a reliable local operator while guaranteeing a smooth, on-time return to your ship.

Although an “all-inclusive” megaship cruise rarely includes shore excursions, instead offering them à la carte, river cruises and luxury ships may provide complimentary shore excursions with standard fares. On Probert’s recent 10-day sailing on Regent’s ultra-luxurious Seven Seas Grandeur , for instance, shore excursions were provided at every port at no added cost.

Pick an excursion that suits your pace

How will you spend your time ashore in Catania, Sicily — sampling terroir from a centuries-old winery or tearing across the slopes of Mount Etna on a quad bike? Whether your approach to exploration is a leisurely bus tour or a pulsepounding adventure, popular cruise ports offer excursions for every activity level. Before booking, make an honest assessment of your ability to meet an excursion’s physical demands, keeping in mind the destination’s climate, terrain and the duration of the experience.

If you’re raring to go, an early start can help you pack multiple activities into a tight schedule. “When you’ve got a long day in port, it pays to take the earliest shore excursion offered,” he suggests. “If you work out the timing right, you can actually squeeze in a second excursion in the afternoon.”

Know when to book

Shore excursions can be as in-demand as your ship’s specialty restaurants, making advance booking a wise idea — particularly when you’re pulling into a port that’s renowned for a singular attraction.

“On an Alaskan cruise, there’s a huge demand for helicopter tours of glaciers on port days,” Probert says. Knowing that these cruise-defining excursions often sell out, he suggests locking them in via the cruise line’s web portal long before you come aboard. Lower-priority excursions that pique your interest — such as culinary tours of the local markets or skip-the-line access to museums — can be booked at your ship’s excursions desk after you’ve settled into your cabin.

If you book your cruise two years in advance, as Probert generally recommends, you’ll have the opportunity to seize President’s Day and Black Friday promotions, which often include ship credit you can apply towards shore excursions.

Pack smarter

One of the delights of cruising is unpacking once and seeing the world. But when you’re heading ashore, Probert suggests putting some thought into what you bring with you — and what you leave behind.

“Take your driver’s license and two credit cards in case one gets compromised or doesn’t work, which happens all too often nowadays,” Probert says. With a few exceptions, your passport can remain locked in the safe in your cabin, but Probert recommends keeping a photo of your passport’s bio page on your phone. While you’re at it, save the phone numbers for both the cruise ship and your travel health insurance provider, along with a copy of your policy.

If you’re going ashore on your own or have booked an excursion independent of your cruise line and travel advisor, you’ll want to take extra measures to prepare for the worst-case scenario of being left behind. Pack up to three days’ worth of essential medications in their prescription bottles to tide you over until you can rejoin your cruise. Then you’ll be ready for any adventure. 

One-of-a-kind Ships |  The Highest Quality  |  All-inclusive Luxury  |  Exceptional Service Curated Experiences |  Outstanding Cuisine

Cruise Evolution

From younger cruisers coming aboard to a growing fleet of floating luxury hotels, these are the forces shaping onboard travel for the year ahead.

RIGHT Millennials are coming aboard in greater numbers, and cruise lines are paying attention.

OPPOSITE PAGE River cruising has expanded to locales like Botswana’s Chobe River, seen here from the lounge of AmaWaterways’ Zambezi Queen

A New Generation Makes Waves

Half the global population is now under the age of 30, and this demographic shift is rejuvenating the cruise experience. The Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) reports the average cruiser’s age today is 46 (it was 64 in 2000) and two-thirds of passengers boarding ships are Gen X or younger. Weekend cruises with the likes of Royal Caribbean Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line and Virgin Voyages are becoming more popular, with their mix of accessibility — short itineraries are budgetand schedule-friendly — and private-island hopping. And Royal Caribbean continues to expand its private beach-club collection with Royal Beach Club Santorini, opening in summer 2026, and Perfect Day Mexico, where families can splash in pools or float on the world’s longest lazy river, as of the fall of 2027.

Virgin Voyages was first to court younger travelers with an adults-only model, stylish spaces like rooftop lounges perfect for sharing on social media, and a focus on food. Now, flexible, casual dining is common on many cruise lines, and that vibe is reflected in spontaneous entertainment like Norwegian’s pop-ups and concerts or Carnival Cruise Line’s retro 1980s deck parties. In port, excursions are trending more active and immersive, such as swimming with pigs in The Bahamas or cave tubing in Belize — a far cry from coach tours. Add a continued technological shift (facial recognition, AI assistants and wearables) aimed at streamlining the onboard experience and the continued efforts to become more sustainable (see page 16), and it’s clear the cruise industry knows that the future is now.

Hurtigruten’s efforts to operate more sustainably include partnering with local businesses like Lofoten Seaweed, whose products are featured on board.

On Course for a Sustainable Future

Emission-free cruising will soon be a reality — good news for travelers who keep track of their environmental impact. Viking Cruises is building the world’s first hydrogen-powered ships, each with a propulsion system based on liquefied hydrogen and fuel cells, that can operate with zero emissions and navigate in environmentally sensitive waters. The 998-passenger Viking Libra is due in 2026, with Viking Astrea coming in 2027. Expedition lines Hurtigruten and Ponant are also developing carbon-neutral ships with the goal of sailing emission-free by 2030. Meanwhile, multiple cruise lines have debuted dual-fuel ships that can switch between conventional fuels and cleaner alternatives, and Celebrity just launched Xcel, the first tri-fuel ship that uses green methanol and liquefied natural gas, in addition to heavy fuel oil.

On board, kitchens are getting a green upgrade. Carnival is leaning on artificial intelligence to streamline operations and reduce food waste by using image recognition to track kitchen operations, thus helping staff to fine-tune food-prep demand and manage inventory. And some of Royal Caribbean Group’s fleet, including mega-ship Icon of the Seas, and Silversea’s Silver Nova are turning food waste into energy to help power onboard systems.

The Tide is Rising on River Cruises

Centuries ago, cities grew along the world’s great waterways, essential channels for shipping and trade. Today, river cruising has become a global travel phenomenon, moving passengers between historic sites on six continents, from the Murray in Australia to the Mekong in Southeast Asia. The river cruise market is projected to surpass $10-billion by 2030, fueled by cruisers looking for more intimate experiences on smaller, boutique-style ships. Cruise operators have answered the call by launching new vessels and expanding into more countries.

Uniworld is debuting the S.S. Emilie on the Danube in March 2026, with three extra ultra-luxe “Super Ships” to follow in 2027. National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions is set to bring its immersive approach to rivers in 2026, with sailings on the Rhine aboard Connect, a sleek, 120-passenger vessel with wrap-around picture windows that bring Europe’s castle spires into staterooms. In Africa, Waldorf Astoria will launch its first-ever river cruises on the Nile in late 2026, while AmaWaterways has charted four new itineraries that include safari cruises on Botswana’s Chobe River to see the park’s famous herds of elephants and Cape buffalo from the water.

More than half of cruisers extend their journey with a night or more in the city where they step aboard or disembark.

OPPOSITE PAGE

When it launches in the summer of 2026, Orient Express Corinthian will be the world’s largest sailing yacht.

Superyachts Bring New Luxury

Forget “cruising.” Today’s top-tier travelers go “yachting.”

When Ritz-Carlton launched its first yacht in 2022, the 149-suite Evrima, they wanted to shift the perception of cruising from pedestrian to something more exclusive and luxurious. Now, cruise lines, hotel chains and even a rail line are sailing superyachts into an opulent future.

In February 2026, Aqua Expeditions debuts the Aqua Lares, a bespoke, 15-cabin superyacht that will sail in East Africa and the Norwegian Arctic with a crew-to-guest ratio of more than one-to-one. Soon after, Emerald Cruises launches the Emerald Kaia, a 128-guest ship that will ply the Mediterranean, Adriatic and Red seas, plus the Seychelles, while guests bask in balcony suites or by the rooftop pool. New to the seas, Orient Express is weighing anchor in June with Corinthian, the world’s largest sailing yacht with 54 spacious suites, five restaurants and butler service. Further on the horizon, Aman Group will take the plunge with Mediterranean sailings on superyacht Amangati starting in spring 2027.

Pre- and Post-Voyage Stays Are the Norm

Some 60 percent of cruise passengers stay one or more nights in the port city before stepping on board and 54 percent extend their trip by at least one night after debarkation, according to the CLIA. Cruisers are extending their holiday to reduce travel stress and have more time to explore, and travel companies and cruise lines have taken note.

Ensemble’s expanded hotel cruise amenity program lets travelers book a pre- or post-cruise hotel in eight port cities across Europe and North America. These stays include a transfer to the ship, plus perks like room upgrades, complimentary breakfast and early check-in or late checkout. Most major cruise lines offer land-based tours or hotel programs that package it all up, from flights and transfers to guided tours and meals. Some, like Princess Cruises, go the extra nautical mile with inland experiences such as slumbering in a wilderness lodge in Alaska. Others offer land itineraries to complement the cruise. Sailing the Nile with Uniworld? Front-load that extraordinary journey with six days spent exploring the terrestrial treasures of Jordan. 

IN PARTNERSHIP WITH HOLLAND AMERICA LINE

Redefining the Art of Vacation

By offering longer itineraries and more time in ports of call, Holland America Line helps guests rediscover what it means to slow down and enjoy the trip.

The keys to a memorable vacation are getting away from the daily grind and carving out time to rejuvenate. Yet too often, many of us find ourselves with packed schedules, striving to do too much and often returning home exhausted. Holland America Line invites travelers to try a different approach: to slow down, discover and “Savour the Journey.” More than just a slogan, it’s a vacation mindset that balances relaxation with enrichment — and a driving force in how the cruise line designs itineraries.

“I’m a firm believer that when we build an itinerary, it has plenty in the way of experiences,” says Paul Grigsby, Holland America Line’s VP of Revenue Planning and Deployment. Grigsby and his team created Legendary Voyages, a collection of multiweek sailings combining breezy sea days with deeper exploration on shore. The 28-day Legendary Coral Triangle & Great Barrier Reef voyage departing

January 2027, for example, layers adventures in Australia, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea with visits to the volcanic isles in the Ring of Fire, where biodiversity and rich Indigenous culture take center stage. Search for endemic primates during a jungle trek on the island of Sulawesi, encounter Komodo National Park’s fearsome dragons or snorkel the pristine coral gardens with manta rays, sea turtles and hundreds of fish species. The rituals and cultural traditions of Papua New Guinea come to life in performances featuring elaborate headdresses, dance ceremonies and other folklore. The voyage takes travelers past Batu Tara volcano, which Grigsby calls “the Stromboli of Asia,” and Krakatau volcano, where one of the most cataclysmic explosions on earth took place in 1883. Beyond unique experiences, itineraries are also crafted with creativity, such as the 28-day Legendary Glaciers & Volcanoes: Alaska to Hawaii departing

September 2026. This trip cleverly combines two contrasting destinations into a single voyage. “It’s a fun juxtaposition with hot and cold, fire and ice, on the same trip,” Grigsby says.

These extended voyages foster slow travel while at sea and offer quality time in port that enables meaningful discoveries on land. Itineraries developed for Holland America’s 2027–2028 Asia season include overnight stays in six major cities, with 34 hours in Ha Long Bay, Vietnam and Bangkok, and up to 40 hours in Shanghai. The extra time in Ha Long Bay, Grigsby points out, allows visitors to explore beyond the area’s dramatic limestone islets. Excursions to fishing villages, family farms and Buddhist monasteries provide a deeper look into the rural life that a single-day visit would miss. Guests can try local cuisine or simply wander, “getting lost” and experiencing the atmosphere in an unhurried way. Three new ports in central Japan — Hitachinaka, Niigata

and Maizuru — have also been added to the 14-day Circle Japan itineraries that sail almost exclusively in Japanese waters. “We’re always looking at augmenting our port portfolio,” Grigsby says, and introducing less-visited communities means itineraries can still entice seasoned travelers.

Destination-specific lectures, such as the “Asia Up Close”™ presentations on Japan sailings, help prepare guests for insightful excursions on Japanese soil. These explore the nation’s futuristic transit system, its legacy of craftsmanship, and cultural themes that range from the way of the samurai and Zen spirituality to architectural design and baseball.

Closer to home in 2027, Holland America Line will celebrate 80 years of cruising to Alaska. “It’s really where we cut our teeth as a cruise line,” says Bill Fletcher, Holland America’s senior director, Sales Enablement. That long-standing experience gives shape to a robust Alaska program, which features

THIS SPREAD, LEFT TO RIGHT Takada Castle, in Joetsu City, Niigata Prefecture, is home to one of Japan’s top nocturnal cherry blossom festivals; a Retreat Cabana, like this one on MS Eurodam, is a perfect setting for observing wildlife and other natural wonders from the deck.

Inside Passage cruises and an array of extensive tours into Denali National Park and Preserve, the Kenai Peninsula and Yukon Territory. The offerings remain compelling, including the trailblazing seven-day Great Bear Rainforest itinerary on British Columbia’s northern coast, charting new territory beyond the typical cruise circuit. The itinerary visits communities with deep Indigenous heritage, such as Prince Rupert, and follows the historic route once traversed by coastal steamers during the Gold Rush. Sailing through the serene, forested Grenville and Seaforth channels, the Great Bear Rainforest cruise explores coastline that few have the chance to experience.

The 28-day Legendary Alaska Arctic Circle Solstice departing in June 2026 pairs the Great Bear Rainforest with visits to Kodiak, Dutch Harbor and Nome. On the longest day of the year, the ship sails to the Arctic Circle to celebrate summer solstice. “We are always looking for ways to differentiate ourselves as the des-

tination cruise line,” Fletcher says. Holland America’s Alaska expertise helps mold itineraries that are equally unique and as rewarding in other regions where nature, wildlife and cultural experiences are front and center. Legendary Voyages also venture to the Amazon, Canada, Iceland, Tahiti and the Marquesas Islands. A key component of Holland America’s global reach is its fleet of 11 mid-sized ships, all of which can sail through narrow channels to access smaller, less-visited ports, opening the door to off-the-beatenpath experiences. “Savour the Journey” begins at sail-away with Taittinger champagne cocktails and destination-inspired canapés, and the theme continues throughout the voyage with cuisine local to the itinerary. Along the way, there are leisurely sea days to truly indulge in every moment, supported by thoughtful service from the gracious crew. The outcome? Return home rested, inspired and enriched. That’s vacationing the Holland America way. 

A Cruise for Every Mood

As the world of cruises continues to expand, so do the opportunities for learning, development and cherished memories. One sure way to go deeper at sea is on a themed cruise — a growing segment that appeals to travelers’ increasing yen for unique experiences and niche interests. Now, guests can mingle with award-winning novelists during floating literary festivals, explore the cosmos on an eclipse sailing or immerse themselves in wellness aboard an ocean retreat.

LIVING WELL

Global wellness has exploded into a $6.8-trillion industry as people pursue a bit of Zen to counter burnout. Crystal Cruises has risen to the occasion by launching its Wellness at Sea retreat voyages with yoga, sound baths, longevity lectures, nutrition consultations, active excursions and farm-to-table dining. “Beyond the core schedule, the retreats offer a level of personalized connection and community,” says Dalila Roglieri, the Abercrombie & Kent Travel Group wellness ambassador who leads the program. “Guests often say it’s the highlight of their trip.” In August, during National Wellness Month, Crystal will mark its third year of Wellness at Sea with two sailings: Vancouver to San Diego, followed by San Diego to Guayaquil, Ecuador — bookable separately or together. Scenic also curates wellness-themed cruises like the October Panama City–to–Valparaíso sailing, offering yoga, Pilates and sound therapy, plus personalized butler service, infrared and bio-saunas, and a cold plunge pool.

ARTS AND LETTERS

Forget hosting book club in your best friend’s living room — take your lit love to the seas. Cunard’s Literature Festival at Sea is a transatlantic voyage to England curated by The Times and The Sunday Times Cheltenham Literature Festival. Passengers get access to a long list of authors and journalists for intimate Q&As and book signings. In 2026, Tayari Jones (Women’s Prize winner for An American Marriage) and crime novelist Linwood Barclay will be two of the special guests in attendance. If books aren’t the ticket, other culture-centric cruises abound, like Ponant’s Made in Italy, the Luxury Edition that explores the art of Italian craftsmanship — from a private visit to the Gucci archives to a Venetian mask-making demonstration. Princess will also be bringing back its Magic Castle™ Conjurer’s Cruise between Vancouver and Los Angeles with adult-friendly magician meet-and-greets, performances, lectures and a Victorian-inspired bar that sprinkles magic into mixology.

BELOW With Silversea, witness the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, a breathtaking celebration of Scottish heritage with music, dancing and military customs.

NATURAL WONDERS

With nature cruises already a popular category, environment-themed itineraries are popping up , driven by the success of solar eclipse sailings in April 2024. For the upcoming August 2026 total solar eclipse, several cruise lines, including Virgin Voyages, National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions and Oceania Cruises, will sail across the path of totality — the strip of the Earth completely shielded from the sun’s rays. Virgin’s Total Eclipse of the (Med), for example, will venture from Barcelona to Rome, featuring night yoga, virtual lectures with astronomers and a “cosmic cuisine” menu with moonpies and Milky Way milkshakes. Sailings that explore the changing seasons — from Japan’s springtime cherry blossoms to North America’s fall foliage — are another way to see the natural world. Each autumn, Silversea offers an exclusive 12-day sailing roundtrip from Montreal that travels through the Gulf of St. Lawrence to the coast of Newfoundland and back. The big draw is the chance to see the trees of Quebec, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Saint-Pierre and Miquelon lit up in vibrant red and yellow, while the excursions — from a seaplane tour of Saguenay Fjord to a dramatic hike through the woodlands of Corner Brook — serve to elevate the scenery.

SPORTING LIFE

Golf fans can get into the swing of things with Azamara Cruises’ international sailings in partnership with PerryGolf. In July, its British Isles itinerary includes tee times at picturesque World Top 100 courses like Royal County Down, Royal Dornoch and Kingsbarns, as well as weekend attendance at the 154th Open at Royal Birkdale. Want to pick up the pace? Since 2025, Explora Journeys docks the only luxury ship in Monaco’s famous Port Hercule as part of MSC Group’s multi-year partnership with Formula One. To make the most of the Grand Prix de Monaco 2026, book a stay aboard the Explora I — whose vibes are akin to a private yacht — and gain front-row proximity to the race. You can also go all out by booking a suite and upgrading to the F1 Paddock Club™, which includes a Pit Lane Walk and small-group paddock tour, as well as access to current drivers and industry legends. Be sure to brake for downtime by the Astern Pool and make a pit stop at the Sky Bar on 14 for an aperitivo and views of Port Hercule.

Winemaking offers a unique lens into a place’s history and culture, and travelers gravitate to cruises that journey through the globe’s most celebrated viticultural regions. AmaWaterways has more than 80 wine-focused river cruises on its roster, including a seven-night Taste of Bordeaux itinerary along the Garonne and Dordogne rivers in southwest France. Guests can choose between pedaling through vineyard-speckled countryside, hiking the Médoc’s storied estates to sip Grand Cru wines or meeting local vintners at a festival in the medieval village of Bourg. Silversea’s series of autumn Grape Harvest cruises covers Portugal’s Douro Valley and Spain’s Galicia, as well as Bordeaux. For a tasty shore excursion, join its tour of a txakoli cellar in the Basque Country followed by lunch at Michelin-starred restaurant Garena, where chef and co-owner Julien Baz introduces the foundational principles of Basque cuisine. Amsterdam

Amsterdam’s appeal begins with its exceptionally well-designed infrastructure, public spaces and a genius network of canals that manages water and traffic with quiet efficiency. Bike lanes set the rhythm of the streets and neighborhoods are built around walkability and open spaces used by locals and visitors alike. Beauty here feels functional, and Amsterdam rewards slowing down: lingering over coffee, wandering narrow streets without a plan, and dipping into museums that range from worldfamous institutions to small, thoughtful spaces.

de Kas

Occupying a former greenhouse, this restaurant’s menus are built around what’s growing in the nursery and gardens in Frankendael Park. Vegetables are harvested hours before service and paired with perfectly prepared seafood or meat.

De Hallen

This former tram depot was reimagined as a sleek cultural complex. It’s now home to Foodhallen, where stalls serve everything from bitterballen to dim sum and chicken shawarma — a perfect spot for indecisive appetites. De Hallen is also home to boutiques, a cinema and art exhibitions.

CAN’T MISS Rijksmuseum

Essential even for those who think they’re not museum people, the Rijksmuseum collection spans centuries of Dutch art and history, with iconic highlights like Rembrandt’s Night Watch and Vermeer’s serene interiors.

The building itself is grand and inspiring — plan at least two to three hours (more if you want time to linger in the galleries or gardens) and book an affordable guided tour to add context and direction to your visit.

CULTURE HIT

Fabrique des Lumières

Housed in a former gasworks at Westergas, Fabrique des Lumières is a multimedia experience with pieces including floor-to-ceiling digital projections of works by artists like Gustav Klimt, set to underwater-themed soundtracks.

MUST-VISIT NEIGHBORHOOD

De Negen Straatjes

These nine side streets are well worth strolling to browse cheese shops, see the Embassy of the Free Mind packed with rare books and experience life on a traditional houseboat at the floating Woonboot Museum.

The Jordaan

Narrow canals, crooked houses and café terraces encourage unplanned wandering just off central Amsterdam. Browse the independent boutiques, galleries and vintage shops along the canals here, and stop for a coffee or beer break at one of the “brown” cafés.

Set inside a 17th-century canal house on the Herengracht, the Museum of the Canals unpacks the story behind Amsterdam’s iconic waterways. A multimedia tour spans 400 years, showing why the concentric canal rings are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and how they shaped urban life.

SHOPPING

Stretching for several blocks through De Pijp, Albert Cuyp Market is Amsterdam at its most lively. Open every day except Sundays since 1905, this open-air destination buzzes with vendors selling everything from warm stroopwafels and briny herring to fresh flowers, spices, clothing and household goods. It’s spirited rather than polished, both a little chaotic and a lot of fun. Consider it a treasure hunt — and come hungry.

Park Centraal Amsterdam

AMSTERDAM NETHERLANDS

Athens

Athens is hallowed ground for history buffs, but you don’t have to be a classical-studies major to feel its pull. For more than 3,000 years, philosophers, artists and architects have been drawn to the sacred rock at its center, the Acropolis, and, from a traveler’s perspective, the city remains surprisingly compact and easily walkable. It helps that its treasure trove of archeological gems is linked by a series of pedestrian walkways, including the magnificent Dionysiou Areopagitou, allowing you to take in everything from Hadrian’s Arch to the Ancient Agora on foot, and at your own pace.

Koulouri

Athens’ answer to the bagel, these sesame-covered bread rings are crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside. And much like a bagel, they come in sweet and savory varieties, including raisin, sun-dried tomato and — this is Greece, after all — black olive.

Meze

At least one of your meals should be at a mezedopoleio, a restaurant serving traditional Greek meze (tapas). Order a succession of the small, shareable plates — ensure kolokithokeftedes (zucchini fritters) make the cut — and wash it all down with a pint of Mythos.

EVENING STROLL

Cap off a busy day of sightseeing with the Greek tradition of volta — a gentle stroll at sundown. The marble-paved streets of the Plaka district provide the perfect setting for this relaxing ritual.

Cruise Terminal
Port of Piraeus

CAN’T MISS

The Acropolis Museum

Before you scale the Acropolis, browse 4,000 artifacts found on its slopes — the context they provide makes for a more meaningful experience. Since 2024, daily visitors to the Acropolis are capped at 20,000. To avoid disappointment, book your timed-entry ticket in advance — early morning and end-of-day are ideal for beating the crowds and heat.

DAY TRIP

Sail the Saronic Gulf

For a Greek island getaway that’s doable in a day, take the ferry to Aegina. The nearest of the Saronic Gulf islands, its whitewashed houses and luminous blue-green waters channel the charms of the Cyclades. Don’t leave without a bag of Aegina pistachios; a rare variety grown exclusively on the island, they’re widely regarded as the world’s best.

With its blend of historic vibes, design and Mediterranean ease, the city feels endlessly interesting — and always worth a second round.

Mercat de Sant

Antoni’s impressive, restored 19thcentury iron-andglass structure houses food stalls that sell produce, seafood and readyto-eat dishes, while Sundays bring a sprawling secondhand book and vintage market.

Gràcia

Here, narrow streets open onto lively squares, rewarding travelers with a more lived-in experience. Head to Cibulet where locals gather for refined yet no-fuss Mediterranean fare.

El Born

Dense, atmospheric and walkable, the area’s medieval streets hide wine bars, coffee shops and boutiques. Come evening, hangouts fill quickly and conversation spills into the streets.

Often overshadowed by the Sagrada Família, Hospital de Sant Pau is a UNESCO-listed complex that was conceived as a garden city hospital. With ornate pavilions linked by underground tunnels, its Art Nouveau architecture is grand yet human in scale, a perfect setting for unhurried, reflective visits.

Fort Lauderdale

WHERE TO EAT

Daniel’s

Opened in 2024, this modern steakhouse highlights local beef and seafood along with fresh produce from nearby farms. Order the Florida burrata, then splurge on the Suwannee River wagyu Delmonico.

Plan a couple of restorative pre- or post-cruise days drifting around the “Venice of America” — so named for its endless maze of inland waterways. Indulge your artsy side in the galleries of the Riverwalk district, stroll the famed Las Olas Boulevard and then beach yourself next to the waves along 24 miles of golden sand.

Eatapas

Live music, flamenco dancers and classic Spanish tapas for sharing — how could a night out get better? Once you’ve had your fill, head through the “pantry” door to sip on Hidden Speakeasy’s craft cocktails.

For close encounters with Floridian fauna, head to Flamingo Gardens outside the city, where you’ll come face to face with endangered Florida panthers, otters, a black bear and, yes, American flamingos.

From weekend markets tucked between highrises to accessible waterfronts and world-class museums, the city’s five boroughs contain more than you could browse, taste and see in a lifetime. Beeline to some tried-and-true favorites, along with new spots worth the adventure — they’ll make every second of that New York minute count.

The three-course prix fixe menu at this East Village eatery from former Momofuku chef Paul Carmichael remixes Caribbean classics, like breadfruit tostones, jerk duck sausage and coconut turnover.
