I remember well my own family trips across Canada, from the Rocky Mountains of Alberta to Nova Scotia’s Peggy’s Cove.

Those holidays shaped me at a young age. Studying maps prompted me to take a greater interest in geography and history classes at school. My mom had a terrible sense of direction and had a hard time with road maps. Even as a kid, I seemed to have a good one and loved being able to help navigate the way to our next destination.

The trips with my family led me to explore the world, too. It taught me to be curious and to approach new places with an open heart and an open mind. I’ve been to more than 70 countries and I’m not done yet.

A family vacation is truly a wonderful gift you can give and share with people who are special to you. on the planet. That said, if you get to witness it at least once in your lifetime, consider yourself lucky. From Bermuda to Jamaica, here are a few places where your family can witness glow-in-the-dark light shows.

BIOLUMINESCENT BAYS, PUERTO RICO Puerto Rico is home to three bioluminescent bays, including Laguna Grande in Fajardo, La Parguera in Lajas and Mosquito Bay on Vieques Island (said to be the brightest).

To see the spectacle in Vieques, book a boat trip with a company like Jak Water Sports or Black Beard Sports.

MERRITT ISLAND NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE, FLORIDA From June to October, the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge is home to an underwater light show. You can book a trip with a local kayaking company, which takes guests through the estuary in a see-through kayak to witness the large gathering of bioluminescent organisms. The conditions are perfect here for them. The refuge is protected, has a stable environment and warm water, ideal for encouraging the organisms to gather in large numbers.

Everything swimming around you lights up. Dolphins glow neon blue, so do manatees and rays. Scoop water into your hands to see bright polka dots appear on your skin.

WAITOMO GLOWWORM CAVES, NEW ZEALAND This labyrinth of caves on New Zealand’s North Island, discovered in the 1800s, is a must-see. Visitors to the caves will see the area’s most famous residents – carnivorous glow worms that dangle from the ceiling. As if that wasn’t cool enough, you’ll also see stalactites, waterfalls and limestone formations.

LUMINOUS LAGOON, JAMAICA Luminous Lagoon is found in the marshlands of Trelawny.

By day, it’s an ideal place for R&R. But by night, it transforms into something straight out of a fairy tale. Local tour companies can bring guests to the dinoflagellates, which give off a greenish blue glow. Thanks to the mixture of freshwater with saltwater and the shallow conditions, it’s the perfect year-round home for them. For a better look, jump in and swim.

SYNCHRONOUS FIREFLIES, CONGAREE NATIONAL PARK, SOUTH CAROLINA With over 2,000 species found worldwide, there are only three species of synchronous flashing fireflies that can be found in North America. Mark your calendar for mid-May or early-June. That’s when synchronous fireflies dazzle the night sky in Congaree National Park in central South Carolina. While it’s still a mystery how they flash at the same time, it is definitely a sight to see.

FIRE WORMS, BERMUDA Visit the north shore of this sub-tropical island between May and November each year after a full moon and you’re in for a treat. Here, you’ll discover something that looks like fireworks on the ocean’s surface. Why? It’s fire worm mating season. When they leave the ocean floor and head up to the surface they do so in beautiful blue-green circles.

Fans dive into an immersive Star Wars experience with a stay at the Galactic Starcruiser in Orlando

By Jamie Davis Smith A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, Star Wars was simply a sci-fi trilogy. Since then, it’s grown into a cultural phenomenon unlike anything else. The Star Wars universe now includes a dozen films, multiple television series, comic books, novels, animated shows and theme park rides on three continents.

In 2022, that universe expanded even more with the introduction of the Galactic Starcruiser, a two-night, completely immersive Star Wars experience at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida. Some call the Starcruiser the “Star Wars hotel,” but it is so much more.

A stay on the Galactic Starcruiser is unlike any other experience. From the moment guests step out of the

vehicles, they are transported to the same world inhabited

by Chewbacca, Rey and Kylo Ren. None of the staff will admit to having heard of Star Wars because in this universe, the story is reality.

My family started preparation for our journey almost as soon as we booked. Some passengers simply arrive and let the story unfold and have a great time. My family wanted to delve a little deeper, so we came up with a basic background story that we were travelling from the planet of Coruscant. Each of us came up with some details about why we were going. My daughter and I had simple costumes, while my husband and sons wore clothing in earth tones to fit into the Star Wars universe. Other passengers went all in with elaborate costumes and fullbody makeup.

The attention to detail aboard the Galactic Starcruiser is incredible. The basic storyline is that passengers are all aboard the galaxy’s most luxurious ship for a vacation. The ship has all the trappings of a luxury cruiser. There is plenty of delicious out-of-this-world food, live entertainment from the galaxy’s biggest superstar, Gaya, and activities planned by the cruise director, including lightsaber and bridge training. Things start to go awry when the First Order boards the ship and starts questioning the loyalty of the crew.

First Order sympathizer and Scoundrel while my younger son was Force Sensitive. My husband and I were Resistance supporters. This meant we all had different missions to complete. We enjoyed being on different paths because we could later share information with each other. We each did things we enjoyed.

If families want to stick together for the entire voyage, they can answer questions the same way to ensure they are on the same path. My youngest son, 7, was also invited to participate in special Loth Cat activities, including a Droid race.

Like all cruises, this one also has a port of call. When we arrived at Batuu in Disney’s Hollywood Studios, my family made optional stops at Oga’s Cantina to complete a mission, grab snacks and visit the Droid Depot. We also went on Batuu’s Star Wars-themed rides and completed additional missions available only to Starcruiser passengers. Once we returned to the ship, each of us was invited to additional “secret” meetings before the grand finale.

Everything about this experience was phenomenal. The attention to detail and the talented cast of the Galactic Starcruiser made every moment memorable. Even with varying degrees of fandom in my family, everyone had a great time from start to finish.

From there, each passenger determines the course of their own Star Wars story by interacting with characters and completing missions on data pads. Questions determined my older son was a combination of

For many families, a cruise vacation ticks a lot of boxes.

There are always plenty of choices to be had, sure to make everyone happy. The newest wave of ships to roam the seas have so much to offer with everything from a go-kart track to Broadway-calibre shows and a roller coaster.

ROYAL CARIBBEAN WONDER OF THE SEAS When you step aboard Royal Caribbean’s newest ship, Wonder of the Seas, which is longer than three football fields and the largest cruise ship in the world, you quickly realize it’s paradise for 6,988 passengers who like to see and do exciting things.

Wonder has Oasis-class fan favourites such as surfing, a nine-storey spiral dry slide, ziplining, rock climbing, sports court and laser tag. The main pool area features an aquapark and fast waterslides.

The newest attraction for kids is Playscape.

It’s a play area with an underwater theme that features slides, climbing walls, games, an interactive mural and more.

The eighth area is called the Suite Neighborhood for its private-access staterooms, restaurant, bar, loungers and plunge pool, as well as the 105-square-metre Ultimate Family Suite, which sleeps up to 10.

Outstanding entertainment is a hallmark so don’t miss the inTENse show at the AquaTheater, featuring high divers and trapeze acrobats. The skating show, 365: The Seasons on Ice has skaters who perform daring physical feats at Studio B. Wonder also has four large pools and more than 30 restaurants, bars and lounges.

While sister ships have seven neighbourhoods, Wonder has eight. The Royal Promenade has

shops; Central Park is lush with plants; the Boardwalk has seaside-inspired attractions such as a merry-go-round; and Entertainment Place features show venues. Plus, there’s a Pool and Sports Zone, Youth Zone and Vitality Spa and Fitness centre.

NORWEGIAN CRUISE LINE PRIMA Norwegian’s beautiful new ship kicked off its arrival in style with pop star Katy Perry as its godmother. She had kind things to say: “My most favourite way to vacation with my family is on the water. Every morning that you wake up, you get to experience an incredible new view. I’m so excited for this new, beautiful, high-end, high-tech ship to take to the seas and provide once-in-a-lifetime vacations for so many families.”

The 3,215-passenger Prima gets the checkered flag for having the largest, three-level racetrack at sea for go-karts. One straightaway is 420 metres long, the track goes through the ship’s funnel and there

are 14 hairpin turns. The go-karts can reach speeds of more than 50 km/h.

The ship also boasts The Drop, the world’s first freefall dry slide that’s 10 storeys tall and gives you a stronger G-force experience than a Formula 1 race car. The Rush area has two duelling dry slides so you can compete with family and friends.

As well as four pools, the aquapark includes the Tidal Wave waterslide where you can ride an innertube on rushing water.

The Galaxy Pavilion has two escape rooms and four simulation experiences.

To refuel or relax after a fun day, you’ve got choices – 35 restaurants, bars and lounges.

SIGHTING A MALE LION

Walking almost impossibly quietly, the female elephant strolled sedately past our Land Cruiser, each footfall raising plumes of talcfine dust. Even with his little eight-year-old arms, my son David could have almost reached out and stroked her leathery mud-caked hide.

David turned to me and grinned with his eyes and smile wide.

You never forget your first close-up encounter with Loxodonta africana, and even years later, David still relishes the thrill of that moment. Because family vacations are about making memories, and when those trips take us out of our comfort zone, they become truly unforgettable.

And on that score, you will have to work hard to beat an African safari. For what could be further than the humdrum of the everyday life than days spent bouncing through the African savannah, eyes peeled for toothy predators and herds of wild game? Come evening, it’s all boma dinners, stargazing and time together watching the ‘bush TV,’ a.k.a. the campfire.

For years, luxury safaris were mostly the preserve of honeymooners and retirees, but over the last decade, lodges have adapted to meet the trend toward multigenerational travel. Today, it’s a rare safari outfit that doesn’t offer interconnected suites, while communal areas are often expanded to create child-friendly spaces filled with games, books and multimedia.

Exclusive-use family villas are the sharp end of that trend.

Typically set slightly away from the main lodge, a dedicated vehicle and safari guide come standard with this type of accommodation, while more luxurious options may boast private chefs and butlers. It’s a wonderful option for focused family quality time, but if your budget doesn’t stretch that far – ours didn’t – you’ll find suites with rollaway beds and privacy screens to keep the whole family happy in one room. Besides, you’ll likely spend little in your suite.

ADMIRING GIRAFFES ON A SAFARI OUTING

Because savvy operators have put enormous effort into evolving the experience of a safari vacation, keeping young and old busy with everything from bush walks to fishing excursions. Larger safari brands also offer bespoke kids’ programmes, with specialist guides teaching youngsters how to track animals, identify plants and make a campfire.

At Sanbona Wildlife Reserve, a three-hour drive from Cape Town, there’s a walking trail through an outdoor classroom, adding a tactile hands-on experience in a safely fenced section of property.

Kids’ clubs have also made inroads into the safari experience.

Some are as simple as a playroom with a secure garden.

Two years after our last visit, David still raves about the impressive offering at Riverdene Family Lodge in South Africa’s Shamwari Game Reserve. It’s an outdoor wonderland complete with treetop canopy walks, ziplines and climbing walls. It was so good, he was happy to skip the evening game drive, which allowed my wife and I some quality alone time.

Sold on a family safari? Great. But before you call up your travel agent, remember that – for safety reasons – where you go and what you’re able to do will depend on the age of your children.

Bush walks are always a memorable part of a safari experience – a particular highlight in Zambia, which is off limits for children younger than 12. In Botswana, some water-based activities are only open to those older than 16. At most camps across Africa, children younger than 12 may only go out on game drives at the lodge manager’s discretion to ensure the experiences of fellow guests aren’t impacted. It pays to ask the right questions before you book.

PRIVATE GAME DRIVE FOR FAMILIES

Perhaps a private vehicle is the solution. Many lodges insist on a private vehicle if your children are younger than six years and it’s often worth paying that little bit extra.

For starters, it lets you set the pace and the schedule. If you want to skip the pre-dawn departure or return to the lodge before the sunset drinks stop, you can make that call without worrying about other guests in the vehicle. It also lets you tailor your game drive to keep your own family happy, whether that’s seeking out a favourite animal or avoiding the more visceral aspects of life in the bush.

On David’s first ever safari drive, we rolled up to a lion with a kill late one afternoon. For most travellers, it would be a highlight and a tick on the safari to-do list.

But the sight of a male lion chomping an eland soon had my young son in tears. Luckily, we had the vehicle to ourselves and asked the ranger to move along.

But even that was a moment for the memory banks. Back home, David was thrilled to tell his friends about his frontrow seat to the wilderness. The fright was forgotten and the excitement remained. The lesson we learned there is that safari vacations are what you make of them. They can be relaxed and laidback, or a non-stop wilderness adventure.

How to travel when your family isn’t ‘ typical ’

From selecting attractions to hotel choices, a mother of an autistic son shares how her family navigates their way to places where everyone feels welcome

When our son bawled for the entire flight between Puerto Vallarta and Calgary, I chalked it up to the terrible threes.

Ditto for road trip tantrums and restaurant outbursts. But after he received an autism diagnosis at age four, I realized travel was going to be more difficult for the family.

I was delighted when we discovered Morgan’s Wonderland on a trip to San Antonio, Texas in 2012. Not only does this theme park provide universal accessibility on its rides and playgrounds, it also has plenty of sensory activities that appealed to Bennett, including a music garden and waterpark, plus areas for chilling out if he got overwhelmed. I realized there were destinations out there that celebrated differences.

In the decade since that vacation, there has been a groundswell of inclusion in the travel industry, making it possible to trip-plan with intention. Work with a travel professional to get expert advice on hotels, restaurants, attractions and destinations that make every effort to welcome all families.

ACCOMMODATIONS Before checking in, make sure your overnight accommodation has amenities that will contribute to a successful stay. For our family, that means a quiet room away from the elevator or street noise, a fridge to store special food items, and a swimming pool and hot tub for our young water lover.

Most hotels are happy to accommodate requests, such as accessible rooms for wheelchair users. Some, like the Chelsea Hotel in Toronto, offer guests with autism a “fidget kit” at check-in that includes sensory toys for self-regulation.

ATTRACTIONS AND ACTIVITIES Sensory stimulation can be overwhelming for kids with autism or cognitive differences. Bennett has bolted from museums and science centres after seeing or hearing something upsetting. Now, I prepare him by creating a visual story about the experience, or we choose attractions that offer sensory kits to help ease anxiety, or quiet zones for him to reset.

The OdySea Aquarium in Scottsdale, Arizona, for example, is accessible and sensory sensitive. It features lower sound volume in exhibit spaces, lights that fade down rather than abruptly switch off, and two quiet rooms for guests that need a break. In Park City, Utah, the National Ability Center offers adaptive recreation for kids with motor challenges or cognitive disabilities. With extra support, my son went rock climbing for the first time and he successfully rode an adaptive bike.

tablecloth or throws his cup of water in a meltdown moment. For atypical families, few travel excursions are as fraught as sit-down meals.

To avoid a worst-case scenario, I ensure the restaurant has food everyone in the family likes before taking a table. Most modern menus cater to special diets, whether gluten-free or vegetarian, so the biggest issues are seating and timing.

We always ask for a booth in an out-of-the-way corner, and order promptly so the meal doesn’t drag on. And if we need to run before eating (for example, after a cup-throwing incident), most restaurants will pack up orders to go. Parents may also want to ask for to-go boxes at the beginning of the meal, or bring their own stackable plastic containers to facilitate faster exits, if needed.

Consider ordering room service for those times when your child is content just to stay in their hotel room. Some Four Seasons properties offer special in-room dining menus just for kids with favourites like grilled cheese and chicken fingers. Marriott hotels offer an Eat Well Menu for Kids with fun options, like pancake lollipops and strawberries with cream served in a chocolate bowl, available through room service.

More destinations are pushing for hotels, restaurants and attractions to think about accessibility for travellers with differences. Some businesses have even encouraged their staff to undergo sensitivity training to recognize and respond to guests with autism.

Certified hotels include: Grand Palladium Bávaro Suites Resort & Spa (Dominican Republic), Legoland Resort (Winter Haven, Florida) and Beaches Resorts (Turks & Caicos, Negril and Ocho Rios). As well, Karisma Hotels & Resorts announced in August 2022 that most of its properties have earned an Autism Ready designation from Autism Double-Checked (ADC). The hotel group with properties in Mexico and Jamaica plans to develop visitor guides for each of its resorts, designed for the autism community to plan successful trips.

In Mesa, staff at the Saguaro Lake Guest Ranch met my son’s needs by tethering his horse to a guide during a trail ride, and by cutting his meat into small pieces before serving him dinner. How one resort chain is creating inclusive, supportive environments for families with special needs

For families with children with autism and sensory differences, travel can pose a unique set of challenges. Mexico is awash with great family-friendly destinations such as Cancún and Tulum, but recently, a new region has appeared on the radar. Los Cabos has seen a tourism boom in 2022, with more than seven million visitors expected before the end of the year. Leave your resort for a while to embark on incredible adventures, ideal for families visiting the Mayan Riviera

By Lisa Kadane Tropical trips with teenagers can be tricky. They’re too old for kids’ clubs, but too young to hang out around swim-up bar. Fortunately, they are the perfect age for adventure, as our family discovered on a trip to the Mayan Riviera.

This palm-fringed stretch of Mexico between Cancún and Tulum fronts the Caribbean Sea and is one of the country’s most popular family destinations. Beyond the beach, there are marine parks, cenotes, watersports, Mayan ruins and a myriad of other ways to entertain and exhaust your kids.

When you have had your fill of the resort, give the teens a dose of adventure – with a few dashes of nature and culture – at these four spots.

SNORKEL OVER STINGRAYS AT XEL-HÁ If Disneyland and a tropical marine paradise had a love child, it would be Xel-Há. Billed as a theme park and a natural wonder, this 84-hectare, all-inclusive outdoor adventure playground is built around an ancient Mayan sheltered harbour. The shallow, turquoise inlet teems with 26 Ultimate Family Vacations | 2022

tropical fish, stingrays and sea turtles and snorkelling is a must (snorkel gear, towels and lockers are included).

After swimming the snorkel circuit together, we split up to do different activities. My daughter and I went zip-biking, where we pedalled bikes that hung from a cable strung high in the rainforest canopy. My husband and son hiked on jungle paths to explore the park’s caves and cenotes (natural limestone sinkholes filled with water).

Other highlights were the 30-metre-high spiral waterslide and the innertube river float with stops for ziplining and cliff jumping. Plan to spend a full day here. You’ll need it when you work in lunch and après-activity cervezas, also included in the price of admission.

EXPLORE THE MAYAN RUINS AT TULUM Perched on a cliff overlooking the Caribbean Sea 64 kilometres south of Playa del Carmen, Tulum is one of the most picturesque Mayan ruins on the Yucatán Peninsula. For this reason, it’s also the busiest. Embark on a guided tour to see

the centuries-old archeological site, its imposing El Castillo pyramid and Temple of the Descending God. You’ll also learn about Tulum’s ceremonial importance and trade significance as a port city to the Maya people.

Afterwards, head down the steps to Tulum’s beach which is a popular nesting site for sea turtles. Hop into the water to snorkel through the cove alongside exotic marine life like rays and schools of tropical fish.

Teens being teenagers, ours were just as happy to spot the iguanas basking on the crumbling stone walls and to take numerous selfies with a cerulean sea backdrop.

GO UNDERGROUND ON THE XENOTES TOUR More than 7,000 cenotes dot the Yucatán Peninsula, creating a Swiss-cheese landscape of eroded limestone caves, and swimming holes filled with fresh water that ranges in colour from emerald green to sapphire blue. These natural caverns and pools were sacred to the Maya, who believed they were gateways to the underworld. Now, visitors can descend into their cooling depths as part of an all-day tour.

We visited four such spots on the Xenotes Tour with our guide, Alberto Herrera, who told us about their history and geology. Each one had a unique structure and colour, with different adventure activities associated with it. We rappelled down into Lu’um, an inky blue cave cenote with bats and thick vines hanging from the cavern’s ceiling. Later,

we kayaked through an open cenote channel at Ha’, passing sheer cliff walls while keeping a lookout for butterflies and tropical birds.

Always a family that likes to end a trip on a high note, we ziplined into the final open cenote, crashing into its placid tourmaline water with gusto. The wakes we created made the surrounding lily pads bob with enthusiasm. No surprise: we napped on the van ride back to the resort.

SEARCH FOR CROCODILES AT SIAN KA’AN The Sian Ka’an UNESCO Biosphere Reserve south of Tulum protects a fragile, interconnected ecosystem of mangroves, marshes, lagoons, palm savannah and barrier reef. This terrestrial and marine environment is home to more than 300 species of birds, plus jaguars, tapirs (New World relatives of the rhino), gentle manatees, sea turtles and even crocodiles.

Since there aren’t any roads into the reserve, the best way to see the park is to get out on the water and navigate between the reef, seagrass and mangrove forests. The Sian Ka’an Adventure with Mexico Kan Tours takes you by boat past aquatic nesting grounds to see frigate birds that act like marine pirates and steal fish from other birds’ beaks, and into placid lagoons to look for manatees and sea turtles. If the conditions are right, snorkel over the vibrant corals of the Mesoamerican Reef, the world’s second-largest reef system.

A family trip to Modena in the heart of Italy’s Emilia-Romagna

By Tim Johnson It’s not yet noon, and already, Lorenza has opened a world of culinary delights for us. Gathered around a big table in the front room of an Italian country villa, owned by the same family since the 19th century, we’re all in aprons, working away to prepare several courses for a midday meal. On the drive out, we took in views of sunflower fields, and spotted dealerships for iconic sports cars, like Ferrari and Maserati. But now, under the watchful eye of our expert maestra, it’s time to get down to business.

For the ricotta cake, my niece Brooke, 17, handles the mixer while my nephew Hunter, 13, pours in the ingredients. A few minutes later, while making the dough for tigelle, a pizza-like flatbread, one of them cracks an egg and half the shell falls into the bowl. Both break out in laughter, while Lorenza looks on shaking her head with a hint of disapproval, but still with a warm smile.

We’re just outside of Modena, a small Italian town of 20,000 in EmiliaRomagna, a region in the country’s north, just next to Tuscany. While the latter gets most of the good press, it’s here in where many things that we identify as distinctly Italian were invented and still produced.

I’m exploring the area with my sister Lisa, my brother-in-law Jeremy, and their two kids.

Modena is in the middle of both the “food valley” and the “motor valley,” home to not just Ferrari but also Lamborghini, Maserati and Pagani. It’s the latter that has captured Hunter’s attention.

I am not a car guy, but for my nephew, a trip to the small, stylish Pagani plant, about 15 minutes outside the city limits, is a dream come true. Horacio Pagani, an Argentinian by birth, came to Italy with a dream, and little else. He first used his extraordinary design and engineering skills for Lamborghini, initially sweeping the floor and quickly working his way up in the company. When he left and went out on his own, his first shop was just a small shed.

Now, Pagani automobiles, made with carbon fibre bodies and highly customizable designs, can sell for more than $20 million. (The average price starts at $3 million.) Before

we proceed to a behind-the-scenes tour of the production floor, where a few employees make the magic happen hand-assembling these automobiles, we walk down a line of sparkling coupes in a small, slick museum in the front of the building.

Hunter had already explained that his favourite car is a specific model – the Pagani Zonda R. I ask him if he sees it here. “I’m trying not to look ahead,” he says, noting how much he’s enjoying examining these beauties. And, while it’s left unsaid, I infer that perhaps he’s also staving off disappointment, if his beloved Zonda R is not included in the museum.

She deems Brooke’s flour mountain to be the best. My niece is clearly demonstrating the baking skills learned from hours of watching the Food Network. We add eggs, and then start kneading and sculpting and rolling, getting it just perfectly thin. “You need to be able to read a newspaper behind it,” Lorenza tells us.

Back at the villa, we’re prepared to taste the fruits of our labour, but first we must hone our pasta-making skills.

Lorenza instructs us to make a little “volcano” out of our flour. “In Italian, we call it a fontana, a fountain,” she says.

Once the pasta is dropped into the boiling water, we finish it in a saucepan with butter and sage. The pasta is al dente, buttery perfection. After a few bites, Brooke exclaims, “It’s so good!” And from start to finish, in a place known for excellence, it really is the best.

But it’s there, right on the end, the last car of the bunch.

Hunter’s face lights up, as if it’s Christmas morning. He seems in awe of this machine, savouring every second in its presence. Lisa, Brooke and I snap his photo in front of it.

Then, we cut out strips for the tagliatelle and do a little origami to create the tortelloni, filling it with spinach, ricotta, salt and nutmeg, then twisting the dough into the proper shape. Hunter shows me how. I wrap the dough around my finger, cross it at the bottom and seal. “You can come work for me,” Lorenza says brightly, and for a minute, I think she means me, but she’s talking to Hunter, of course.

Big goals, big wins A new initiative from the Sandals Foundation will empower youth in the Caribbean to learn soccer skills while also teaching the importance of taking care of natural resources

By Kristi Eaton Future Goals is a partnership between the foundation and The Netherlands’ AFC Ajax team that turns fishing nets sourced from the ocean and recycled plastic waste into soccer (locally known as ‘football’) goals for children.

A training program is also part of it.

The program launched on the Dutch Caribbean island of Curaçao with plans to expand to other places in the Caribbean.

“Sandals Resorts was gearing up to debut its first-ever resort on the island and with the existing relationship between AFC Ajax and Curaçao, starting our Future Goals journey there was the perfect match for this groundbreaking partnership,” she said. “Our existing relationship with Limpi Recycling brought the vision from prototype to reality.

Curaçao is just our starting point, and we are eager to expand Future Goals into a Caribbean-wide program.”

“As a Caribbean-born company, we are dedicated to showcasing this region’s beauty to the world while investing in its future – from protecting its oceans and marine life to developing generations to come,” said Heidi Clarke, executive director of the Sandals Foundation.

Ghost nets, or fishing nets lost at sea, make up nearly half of the world’s ‘plastic soup,’ a term for the accumulation of waste, including plastic, that ends up in the ocean. The Future Goals initiative is working with Curaçaoan plastic recycling company Limpi to create the goal posts. Initially, 100 goals will be installed at four dozen elementary schools throughout the island. Adidas is also providing more than 600 soccer balls to the initiative.

Clarke said that Curaçao was selected because leaders knew it was the perfect spot to hit the ground running with the program.

DANCING BESIDE THE SEINE IN PARIS

Claude Monet’s water lilies are spread before my mother’s feet as if in a dream. We’re standing on the bridge built by the famous impressionist at his home in Giverny, France.

The bridge and pond became a focal point for his life’s work. Over a 30-year period, Monet painted 250 water lily scenes. For my mom, a hobby painter, looking out over the inspiration for some of the world’s most beloved paintings is a dream come true.

All her life, my mother’s wish to travel to Europe remained elusive. When my wife and I were planning a three-week holiday to Paris with our two teenage children, we decided to invite my mom.

The day trip to Giverny is just one of many we take, all within 100 kilometres of Paris. On other days, we marvel at the decadence of Versailles, explore Loire Valley châteaux and step back in time within the walled medieval town of Provins.

In Paris, we spend our days exploring one of the world’s most walkable cities. As an avid golfer, my mother has no difficulty climbing the Eiffel Tower or the cobblestone streets up to Sacré-Cœur Basilica, although rest stops at sidewalk cafés for lunch or a quick espresso are welcome.

On one memorable day, we shop for wine, soft drinks, cheeses, baguettes and fresh fruit for a picnic beside the Seine with a view of Notre Dame Cathedral. Mid-picnic, a group shows up to practice dancing the tango. We are mesmerized. My mom blushes when a handsome Parisian asks her to dance.

My mom is here, having the time of her life. We couldn’t be more pleased as we watch her take it all in.

But what we don’t expect are the ways Paris will leave equally lasting impressions on our son, our daughter and ourselves.

It’s at Château de Versailles and the Loire Valley’s Château de Chaumont that our daughter has her most memorable moments. Contemporary art displays in both châteaux reference the sheer decadence of French nobility. Exploring the great halls of Versailles, we come upon a helicopter draped in giant, pink feathers. Outside among the traditional gardens at Chaumont, we find contemporary sculptures – a giant hand, an army of golden gnomes and a flock of blue butterflies. Our daughter discovers the power of art as historical commentary. Back home, history becomes her favourite school subject.

Our son happens to mark a birthday mid-trip. When we ask him what he’d like for gifts, he surprises us. “I want to climb the Eiffel Tower at night, and I want a home-cooked French dinner.”

We grant both wishes, the second by shopping at a nearby market where we buy fresh tomatoes and figs, a cut of lamb and whole branches of rosemary. Rather than birthday cake, we stop at a boulangerie for an assortment of pâtisseries.

Taking a when-in-Rome approach, we even buy a half litre of rosé to share with our son. He’s so thoroughly smitten with French cuisine, we later sign him up for a subscription to a gourmet cooking magazine.

It’s at the market where my wife has her Parisian moment.

When we meet up after exploring every corner, I find my wife, an avid gardener, laden with an armload of flowers.

She’s radiating and radiant. I take photos of her until she implores me to stop.

My own memories are made at Père Lachaise Cemetery, of all places. That’s where I discover the headstones of Oscar Wilde, Gertrude Stein and Marcel Proust, some of my literary idols. But the personality I’m most interested in is Jim Morrison, the lead singer for the 1960s band, The Doors. In my youth, I fell for his rebellious spirit and his dark poetry. As is the custom for visitors here, I crack a beer at his graveside and pour a generous portion for Morrison before making a toast in his memory.

Paris has left lasting impressions on all of us, but my mom is in for one more. Deep inside the Louvre, I stand with her before Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa. There before the world’s most famous painting, she contemplates the power of art while I contemplate the ability of Paris to transform three generations of travellers.

Getting teenagers to put down their electronics during a family vacation was challenging for one parent until she introduced her kids to Costa Rica’s abundant natural features

Some say it would take a force of nature to get teenagers off their phones. On our last vacation, our family rented a beach house and their bad habits continued. Yeah, the kids went swimming and we took a boat trip, but there was no excitement.

No real interest. Just a lot of scrolling on their phones and boredom. For our next vacation, I decided to take them to the place where I knew nature to be its most powerful and let it take its course.

Costa Rica is a tiny country at just 51,000 square kilometres, but it hits way above its weight class when it comes to the environment. Rainforests, cloud forests, waterfalls, volcanoes, beaches, mangroves and more make the destination one of the most biodiverse places in the world.

On the first morning, we woke in our casita in the Osa Peninsula to noises coming from the roof. Too heavy to be rain, it almost sounded like a bunch of acorns falling. When we headed to the porch to investigate, we found a troop of endangered squirrel monkeys using our roof as a bridge from tree to tree. The little guys were tiny and enchanting, about 30 centimetres tall with long tails swinging them from branch to branch. There were maybe 25 in total. We stood transfixed.

They looked at us, curious, but then headed to their breakfast buffet in one of the trees. “Mom…” my oldest grabbed my hand. “They’re so cute!”

We booked our first trip with a guide.

I confess I’m afraid of heights so when it came to climbing 20 metres up a giant matapalo tree, I stayed on the ground while the kiddos got strapped into their harnesses and helmets. My heart was in my throat as they ascended with giant smiles and looks of determination, while the tour operator, Andy, directed them on where to put their feet. I strained to see as they got higher and higher, culminating in a Tarzan swing to the ground that I almost couldn’t watch.

The next day, determined to keep our feet on the ground, we headed to calmer activities. The mud baths and hot springs of Rincón de la Vieja were calling my name.

In the morning, we hiked the national park.

I did my research and learned that the Costa Rican word for sloth translates to lazy bear. So I showed off my Spanish skills and told our guide that we were dying to see an “oso peligroso.”

HORSEBACK RIDING THROUGH THE JUNGLE

“No,” he explained, shaking his head, “we don’t have dangerous bears here.”

I blushed. “Sloths?” I said. His English was obviously better than my Spanish.

“Oso perezoso,” he smiled. “Let’s find one.”

With the help of our guide, we spotted a vine snake, gorgeous and colourful birds, howler monkeys and a smiling, not dangerous at all, sloth. Next, we drove to the hot springs park and changed into our bathing suits, before slathering ourselves with volcanic mud, said to have healing properties. We let it dry as we caught the sun, then rinsed off before going for a soak in the Rio Negro hot springs. We relaxed and soothed our sore muscles as we recounted our recent exploits.

The next day, the kids convinced me to do a horseback ride and zipline combo. We all loved the horseback ride through the jungle and the kids mightily enjoyed whizzing over ravines at high speeds. Did I mention I’m afraid of heights?

Later in our trip, it was our turn to hit the waves. In Tamarindo, I dragged the kids out of bed at 7:30 a.m. because that is when the tide was good. We walked bleary-eyed to the surf shop, wrestled our rash guards over our heads and carried our rented boards across the street to the beach. After a demo on the sand, my 13-year-old waded into the surf with the instructor. After a couple of false starts, she stood up on her board and rode the wave, wobbling her way to the shore. We cheered as she grinned and gave us the “hang loose” hand signal.

“Get your phone!” I urged my kid. “Take a picture.”

“I don’t know where it is,” she told me. “I think it’s dead.” To this mother, hearing that was like music to my ears.

For another adventure, we headed to the coast where we watched a baby turtle battle its way out of its ping pong

ball-like shell, then clamber over all of the other babes in the nest to make its way through the sand and on to the sea. We rooted for it as a wave made him tumble back up to shore, then finally scrambling back toward the water at long last to swim away – truly a lesson in perseverance. We watched this miracle in awe. We were speechless as all the hatchlings left the nest.
