DIRECTOR'S NOTES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yes, we live in an age of hype. I open the arts section of the Times on Sunday to be assaulted by exclamation points. "Funniest play in years!!!!" "Best musical since (fill in the blank)!!!!!!" Etc!!! Etc!!! Etc!!!!

For me, John Patrick Shanley sometimes suffered from excess. He could write excellent work (Doubt) or loathsome fare (anyone see Joe Versus the Volcano?). So much of his work was characterized by hyper drama (Defiance) or hyper comedy (Italian American Reconciliation). I thought I could discern Shanley's writing by this kind of verbal assault. Drama through exclamation point.

If I had first read Outside Mullingar without knowing its author, I definitely would not have guessed it was John Patrick Shanley. There is a lyricism, a beauty, with nuanced comedy and drama intermingled into a soft human and humane work.

No excess, but a love for each of these wonderful and wonderfully flawed human beings. Outside Mullingar is a sweet, touching work filled with beauty and blarney.

Irish charm without any exclamation points. Sit back and enjoy. On this spring day it is as if white heather is growing in Over-the-Rhine.

THE CAST DALE HODGES (Aoife Muldoon) became a member of Actors’ Equity in 1974 and has worked both on and off-Broadway and in regional theatres around the country. Since moving to Cincinnati in 1988, she has performed on most area stages.

Her many appearances at Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati include Other Desert Cities, Mrs. Mannerly, Grey Gardens, 33 Variations, Copenhagen, and Seascape. Her Playhouse in the Park credits include Wit, The Fool in King Lear, The Piano Teacher, 22 seasons of A Christmas Carol, and most recently Sherlock Holmes and the Adventure of the Suicide Club. With the Cincinnati Shakespeare Company she played Mary Tyrone in Long Day’s Journey Into Night, and with the Opera she appeared as a non-singing, French-speaking Duchess of Krakenthorpe in La Fille Du Régiment on the glorious Music Hall stage. Last winter she was in Ed Stern’s production of Noises Off at the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, and this summer she will return for her twelfth visit to Peterborough Players in New Hampshire.

Most recent of all, she has had fun playing two very contrasting character ladies with flower names: Daisy in Driving Miss Daisy at Covington’s Carnegie Theatre, and Violet in August: Osage Country at Ludlow Avenue’s tiny Clifton Performance Theatre. Ms. Hodges is delighted to be back at the Ensemble, her downtown theatre family, in this lovely Irish play. Thanks to Lynn and to her other family: husband David Logan, son Sebastian, and stepson Hugh.

JEN JOPLIN (Rosemary Muldoon) is always thrilled to come and play with Ensemble! ETC audiences saw Ms. Joplin last season as Ruth in Tribes and one of her all-time favorites, Gwen in Rapture, Blister, Burn. Originally from St. Louis, she has worked across the country as an actress, corporate trainer, voiceover artist, and teacher. Some of her other favorite roles include Annette in God of Carnage, Cleopatra in Antony and Cleopatra, Catherine in Proof, Lenny in Crimes of the Heart, Bun in The Love Talker, and Harper in Angels in America. She is a proud member of Actors’ Equity and graduate of Wright State University. She would like to thank Ed for this amazing experience and Lynn for welcoming her into the ETC family. And her very rich and crazy life would not be possible without support from her husband and son, friends and family. But above all tonight, she is forever thankful for this opportunity to share the stage with her father. Love to you, Da.

THE CAST CONT. JONEAL JOPLIN (Tony Reilly) is pleased to be returning to Ensemble Theatre where he was previously seen as Niels Bohr in Copenhagen and Richard in The Seafarer. Cincinnati theatergoers have also seen him in productions at the Playhouse in the Park and Cincinnati Shakespeare Company.

Roles have included Scrooge in A Christmas Carol, The Old Actor in The Fantasticks, Lear in King Lear, Judge Turpin in Sweeney Todd, Matthew Brady in Inherit The Wind, James Tyrone in Long Day's Journey, Krapp in Krapps Last Tape, Erie Smith in Hughie, and Candy in Of Mice and Men, to name a few. He has appeared in theatres across the country in over 250 productions, most recently at the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis in Guess Who's Coming To Dinner as Monsignor Ryan. He is delighted to be sharing the stage with his daughter, Jennifer. This one is for his own "Mary," his lovely wife of 52 years, Janie.

BRIAN ISAAC PHILLIPS (Anthony Reilly) is delighted to return to the Ensemble Theatre stage after having appeared in Dead Man's Cell Phone, The Seafarer, Ice Floe, and the Off-Center Series production of God's Country. Other recent credits include Collapse at Know Theatre, Porgy & Bess and Carmen at the Cincinnati Opera, as well as Shylock in The Merchant of Venice at Cincinnati Shakespeare Company. His other favorites include the title roles in Hamlet, Macbeth, and Henry V, A Streetcar Named Desire, and The Weir, Cincinnati Shakespeare Company; The Goat or Who is Sylvia, New Stage Collective; as well as productions with Playhouse in the Park and the Children's Theatre. He is proud to be serving his twelfth season as Producing Artistic Director at Cincinnati Shakespeare Company. He would like to thank Corinne, Holden, and Annabel for making every day a day when the sun is shining.

THE PLAYWRIGHT JOHN PATRICK SHANLEY (Playwright) is from the Bronx.

He was thrown out of St. Helena’s kindergarten. He was banned from St. Anthony’s hot lunch program for life. He was expelled from Cardinal Spellman High School. He was placed on academic probation by New York University and instructed to appear before a tribunal if he wished to return. When asked why he had been treated in this way by all these institutions, he burst into tears and said he had no idea. Then he went into the United States Marine Corps. He did fine. He’s still doing okay.

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR ED STERN is thrilled to return to Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati, having last co-directed the world premiere of Size Matters last season, as well as the regional premieres of Mrs. Mannerly and Copenhagen. Mr. Stern recently retired as Producing Artistic Director from Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park after twenty seasons, where he also directed As You Like It, God of Carnage, The Piano Teacher, The Fantasticks, Victoria Musica, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Othello, Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure, Of Mice and Men, Stone My Heart, A Funny Thing Happened On the Way to the Forum, Twelfth Night, Mister Roberts, One, The Smell of the Kill, Ah, Wilderness!, King Lear, Inherit the Wind, Wit, Gross Indecency, The Little Foxes, and Sweeney Todd, among others. Mr. Stern's regional credits include numerous regional theatres including The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, Actors Theatre of Louisville, Great Lakes Theater Festival, The Cleveland Play House, Kansas City Repertory Theatre and San Jose Repertory Theatre.

Productions include Richard III, M. Butterfly, The Three Musketeers, Romance Language, A Streetcar Named Desire, The Rivals, and The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby. A graduate of the University of Virginia and Indiana University, he co-founded the Indiana Repertory Theatre in 1972. There he directed more than two dozen plays during his eight years as artistic director. He was on the directing faculty at Rutgers University, as well as the acting faculty for the William Esper Acting Studio in New York. He is married to Annie Ward Stern and has two sons, Robert and Ward.

THE PRODUCTION TEAM BRANDON T. HOLMES (Production Stage Manager) is currently in his third season with ETC. He holds a BFA from Wichita State University in Technical Theatre and Design. He served as Production Stage Manager for LOOK Musical Theatre in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He also worked with Music Theatre Wichita for four summers where he assistant stage managed over twenty productions. He moved to Cincinnati to spend two seasons at the Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park as a stage management intern. His other credits include the Cincinnati Fringe Festival, Theatre in the Park, Kansas City Starlight, and Wichita Center for the Arts. His favorite productions include Thunder Knocking on the Door, Merrily We Roll Along (directed by John Doyle), Disney’s The Little Mermaid, The Producers, Miss Saigon, Tribes, and Sunset Boulevard. Thank you to the cast and design staff for making this fantastic experience. Love to MDRJMLAT. He is a proud Actors' Equity Association member!

JOSEPH P. TILFORD (Set Designer) makes his debut at ETC with Outside Mullingar.

In Cincinnati he has designed the sets for over thirty productions for Playhouse in the Park and for the Cincinnati Ballet Company, he designed the sets for the 2014 world premiere of King Arthur’s Camelot. He has also designed for many of America's foremost professional theatres in New York, Chicago, and across the nation including The Goodman Theatre, Milwaukee Repertory Theatre, Syracuse Stage, The Old Globe, The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, Missouri Repertory Theatre, Indiana Repertory Theatre, and The Cleveland Play House. His work has been exhibited at the Prague Quadrennial and in a retrospective exhibit for the 50th Anniversary of the United States Institute for Theatre Technology. A notable design educator, he taught design for many years at Northwestern University. He currently teaches design for the School of Design and Production at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, where he served as dean from 2003 to 2014.

SHANNON RAE LUTZ (Properties Master/Design Assistant) earned her Master’s degree in 1996 and became Prop Master at ETC. Ms. Lutz would like to thank the Cincinnati theatre community and patrons for their generous, supportive and tenacious spirit. Trained as a performer, she first appeared on ETC’s stage during the 1989 New Works Festival. In 1991, she was granted an ETC Internship. Now the Director of Intern Programming, she is honored to guide ETC’s essential ensemble: the Intern Company. She would like to thank her family for their persistent love and support, Ruth D. Sawyer for lessons in art, life, and integrity, and D. Lynn Meyers for her dedication to our dreams.

PRODUCTION TEAM CONT. BRIAN c. MEHRING (Resident Lighting Designer) has designed over 100 productions at ETC. His favorite productions include: Thom Pain (based on nothing), Next to Normal, 33 Variations, Freud's Last Session, and I Am My Own Wife. Mr. Mehring’s regional favorites for set design include: The Last 5 Years and I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change, Playhouse in the Park; Henry IV, Part 1, The Georgia Shakespeare Festival; and I Am My Own Wife, Actors Theatre of Louisville, Peterborough Players, and Florida Studio Theatre.

REBA SENSKE (Costume Designer) is CCM's Associate Costume Designer. She's designed costumes for ETC's Becky's New Car, 33 Variations, Mauritius, Grey Gardens, The Seafarer, Rabbit Hole, Souvenir, String of Pearls, I Am My Own Wife, and Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2001), among countless others. Her other credits include ETC's Ugly Duck, Cinderella, The Frog Princess, Alice in Wonderland, and Sleeping Beauty, as well as Side Man, A Question of Mercy, Seascape, and Traveler in the Dark. CCM credits include: Hot Summer Nights, Violet, We Tell the Story, and Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill. Other CCM credits include: Singin' in the Rain, The Boys from Syracuse, Oklahoma!, and Big River. She designed Noah's Flood for the May Festival and is Cincinnati Opera's costume coordinator. She designed Ainadamar, Cosi Fan Tutti, and Calisto for the Cincinnati Opera.

MATT CALLAHAN (Sound Designer) was the Resident Sound Designer for Actors Theatre of Louisville for seven seasons. Most recent designs include The Pavilion, Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park; Bob, LMNO Pea, The End, Sirens, The Cherry Sisters, Ground, A Christmas Story, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Hard Weather Boating Party; Detroit '67, Size Matters, Other Desert Cities, Mrs. Mannerly, Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati. Mr. Callahan was also a co-creator/designer of Rock n’ Roll: The Reunion Tour. He has spent two seasons as the resident sound designer at The Eugene O’Neil Center for their National Playwrights Conference.

He was formerly the sound engineer for The Steppenwolf Theatre, the Assistant Engineer for Blue Man Chicago and a member of the disbanded Defiant Theatre.

He received a Jeff Citation for Red Dragon, a nomination for Fortinbras, and a Kevin Kline nomination for Sherlock Holmes.

JACK MURPHY (Technical Director) grew up in the Cincinnati area. He went to undergrad at Hanover College where he studied technical theatre. While there he spent his summers at several different summer stock theatres such as Georgia Shakespeare Company and the Brevard Music Center’s Janiec Opera Company as a carpenter. After graduation he moved to Bellport, NY to work for The Gateway Playhouse as a carpenter and rigger. When he left Gateway, he went to work on The Pride of America, a Norwegian Cruise Line ship. After another summer at the Janiec Opera Company, he came full circle and returned home to Cincinnati.

Since he has been back, he has worked at Cincinnati Shakespeare Company and River City Scenic as well as ETC.

Weekend hours vary. VISA, MC, Discover, and AmEx are accepted, as well as Downtown Gift Cards.

TICKET RESERVATIONS & SALE POLICY Reservations can be made by calling the box office, in person, or online. Ticket reservations are not accepted via email. Single-ticket purchases are a final sale with no refund. Single tickets may, however, be exchanged for another performance during the run of a show for a fee, but may not be exchanged from one production to another. If a patron is a no-show for their reserved performance, ETC is under no obligation to reschedule his or her tickets.

TAX CREDITS If for any reason you cannot attend your performance and cannot reschedule for another date, tickets released prior to performances by calling the ETC box office are fully deductible as a charitable contribution.

No-shows or tickets released after curtain time do not qualify as tax credits.

PARKING Patrons may park at the Gateway Garage (accessible via 12th Street) or at the surface lot, both are conveniently located at the corner of Vine and 12th Streets. Parking is also available at Washington Park Garage and Mercer Commons Garage.

CHILDREN Children under the age of 4 will not be admitted to productions unless otherwise advertised. Parents with disruptive children will be asked to leave the theatre.

LATECOMERS & ADMITTANCE Latecomers will be seated at the House Manager’s discretion and may be denied admission depending upon the demands or structure of a particular production. Should you need to leave the theatre during a performance, readmittance is not guaranteed. ETC reserves the right to deny admission and/or remove any disruptive patrons from the theatre at any time.

RESTROOMS Restrooms are located at the front of the lobby. Should you need to use the restroom during a performance, please exit the theatre the same way you came in. Readmittance will be at House Manager's discretion.

ACCESSIBILITY Please notify the box office in advance if you require wheelchair-accessible seating or have special seating needs and our staff will be happy to accommodate you. Audio-enhancement available. Generally, signinterpreted performances are on the third Wednesday of every production.

CAMERAS, CELL PHONES & STAGE Actors’ Equity Association strictly prohibits the use of cameras or recording devices (including camera phones) in the theatre. Kindly turn off any cell phones or pagers prior to the show starting. Text messaging during the show disturbs other audience members and actors and will not be tolerated. For safety reasons, audience members are strictly prohibited from standing, sitting or otherwise being or putting anything onstage at any time.
