DIRECTOR'S NOTES Sometimes a show insists it must be done.

It’s an absolute fact that, even with the revival in London and the immersive work happening in Buenos Aires, Next to Normal wasn’t on my radar when I began planning this season. But things changed.

In the quiet of my office, I glanced over at the 2011 poster, one of the few from the many shows I’ve directed that still hang on my walls. It called out to me, emotionally and insistently.

From a producer’s standpoint, I worried that this show might be too expensive: a live band, a spectacular set, brilliant performers. But I believed that the price was worth it. It was necessary.

This past year has been one of great personal loss: family, friends, even my car are gone, and with them, familiar anchors that once held me steady. At times, it has felt like standing on the edge of an abyss, where choosing to feel nothing seems easier than facing the grief. But Next to Normal does not allow us to escape pain. Like life, it demands to be fully lived or not at all.

Next to Normal is a story of love, and the limitless ways we strive to find communion, with ourselves and with others.

These lyrics from Next to Normal speak my truth: "The price of love is loss, But still we pay— We love anyway."

If you’re reading this, you’ve helped support this essential work, and I thank you. I don’t believe in compromise; it’s not in my vocabulary. You have my full, unwavering commitment to give you everything—and then some—to ensure you remain a patron of ETC: essential theatre for Cincinnati.

ABOUT US OUR MISSION Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati (ETC) is a professional theatre dedicated to producing world and regional premieres of works that often explore compelling social issues. We fulfill our mission through our stage productions and educational outreach programs that enlighten, enliven, enrich, and inspire our audiences.

OUR HISTORY From its founding in 1986, ETC has focused on providing an artistic home for local theatre professionals, including serving as a training ground for young artists. Each season, ETC produces a lineup devoted to the newest in contemporary theatre that attracts a diverse audience of 20,000 to more than 125 performances. Our work also includes education and engagement programs centered on introducing the performing arts to students from under-resourced schools and children with disabilities.

Combined, our productions and educational programs strive to fulfill ETC’s vision of creating an urban arts district that is accessible to all.

CAST CHARLIE CLARK (Dan) was last seen at Ensemble Theatre as Bruce Bechdel in Fun Home, as well as Father in Violet, Don in Rapture, Blister, Burn, Benny in Hands on a Hardbody (2014), Pastor Jay in Luna Gale, Brandon in Next Fall, and Dr. Madden/Dr. Fine in Next to Normal (2011). Other local credits include Church Girls, Take Me Out, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, On Golden Pond, Carousel, Love’s Labour’s Lost, See What I Wanna See, The Full Monty, and Sunday in the Park with George. His Chicago credits include Company (Jeff Award), The Hawkshaws, Into the Woods, Kiss of the Spiderwoman, and Sweeney Todd. JULIANNE FERGUSON (Natalie) is so honored and excited to make her first appearance at Ensemble Theatre. She is currently in her second year pursuing a BFA in musical theatre at the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music. Her recent credits include Eye in In the Green, CCM; Jane Doe in Ride the Cyclone: The Musical, CCM’s Mosaic Theatre Ensemble; and Cinderella in Into the Woods, Tooele Valley Theatre. JESSICA HENDY (Diana) is thrilled and grateful to return to her hometown and reprise her role in Next to Normal at Ensemble Theatre. She has spent the past twelve years in New York City with her son, Beckett. Recently, her autobiographical one-woman musical, Walking with Bubbles, premiered off-Broadway, earning her a Drama Desk nomination and an Off-Broadway Alliance Award for Best Solo Show. The cast album is available on all streaming platforms. Her credits span four Broadway shows, off-Broadway shows, national tours, regional theatre, and symphony concerts across the country. CARTER MINOR (Henry) is a junior majoring in musical theatre at the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music, where some of his credits include Ensemble/Claude understudy in HAIR, Ensemble in Once on This Island, and Ensemble in 30 Years of Stephen: The Music of Stephen Flaherty at Carnegie Hall. CAST RORY SHERIDAN (Dr. Madden/Dr. Fine) makes his Ensemble Theatre debut with this production. He graduated from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts where he studied at the Stella Adler Conservatory and The Experimental Theatre Wing. Some of his local credits include A Christmas Carol, Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park; Happy Birthday Wanda June, One Off Productions; Neverwhere, Know Theatre of Cincinnati; A Few Good Men, Cincinnati Landmark Productions; and Brighton Beach Memoirs, The Human Race Theatre Company.

JAMESON ZOLLER (Gabe) is so excited to make his debut with Ensemble Theatre! He is currently pursuing a BFA in musical theatre at the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music. His recent credits include swing in Wonderful Town, CCM; Russian dancer in The Nutcracker, Le Jeune Dance; production tenor in Singin’ in the Rain, The Carnegie; and Roger in Rent, Commonwealth Artists Student Theatre. Outside of theatre, Jameson is a fifth degree black belt and certified instructor of taekwondo. He wants to give a special thanks to his family for everything they have done for him! CREATIVE TEAM TOM KITT (Composer) is a two-time Tony, two-time Emmy, Pulitzer Prize, and Grammy Award winner. As a musical theater composer, he has written the music for six Broadway shows including Next to Normal (Tony Award, Olivier Nomination), If/Then (Tony Nomination), Almost Famous (Tony Nomination), Flying Over Sunset (Tony Nomination), High Fidelity, and Bring it On: The Musical. His work for the stage has also been seen off-Broadway at Second Stage (Next to Normal, Superhero), The Public Theater (The Visitor, Shakespeare in the Park), and he has worked at some of the most prestigious regional theaters including The Old Globe, Arena Stage, Berkeley Rep, The Signature Theater, and ART. In addition, Tom’s Broadway credits as an orchestrator include Next to Normal (Tony Award), Hell’s Kitchen (Tony Nomination), The SpongeBob Musical (Tony Nomination), Jagged Little Pill (Tony Nomination), Almost Famous, Head Over Heels, Everyday Rapture, and American Idiot. Tom has also been active in the world of film and TV. As one of the vocal arrangers working on the Pitch Perfect films, Tom most notably helped create the classic “Riff-off.” Tom also served as music supervisor/arranger/orchestrator for Grease Live! and contributed songs for Royal Pains, Penny Dreadful, and Sesame Street. He also provided music supervision for the NBC series, Rise, and served as a supervising music producer on the Bobby Lopez/Kristen Anderson-Lopez/Steven Levenson/Thomas Kail musical television series Up Here. Tom is also proud that his musical adaptation of Freaky Friday, co-written with Bridget Carpenter and Brian Yorkey, was turned into an original movie musical for The Disney Channel. Tom is a Sony Masterworks artist, with whom he recorded his debut album, Reflect, in 2021.

BRIAN YORKEY (Librettist & Lyricist) received the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, the 2009 Tony Award for Best Score, and the Outer Critics Circle Award for Next to Normal, and he was also nominated for the Tony Award for Best Book of a Musical. He partnered again with the Next to Normal team on If/Then (Tony Award Nominee for Best Score) starring Idina Menzel. Brian co-wrote the libretto for The Last Ship (Outer Critics Nomination, with John Logan), with a score by Sting. He wrote lyrics for the Disney Theatricals musical adaptation of Freaky Friday, which also became a Disney Channel Original Movie. Brian most recently served as the executive producer and co-showrunner for the Netflix series Echoes. Prior to that, Brian was the creator, executive producer, and showrunner of 13 Reasons Why for Netflix and Paramount Television. He has also directed for theatre and television. Brian is a graduate of Columbia University (where he was artistic director of the Varsity Show), an alum of the BMI/Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop, and a proud member of the Dramatists Guild, the WGA, and the DGA.

PRODUCTION TEAM D. LYNN MEYERS (Director) (she/her) welcomes you to Ensemble Theatre's 40th and her 30th season, where she has directed more than a hundred world and regional premieres, including Hands on a Hardbody, Fun Home, Morning Sun, The Wolves, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, I Am My Own Wife, Tiny Beautiful Things, and the world premiere of The Dancing Princesses. She began her career as the associate artistic director at Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, has directed off-Broadway at the York Theatre, and has directed extensively throughout the US and Canada. As a member of the Casting Society of America, Lynn's recent feature credits include The Bikeriders, Shirley, and Dark Waters, in addition to serving as the location casting director for The Shawshank Redemption. Lynn recently directed the world premiere of Fierce for the Cincinnati Opera. She was named a finalist for the Zelda Fichandler National Award in 2011, is a past recipient of the YWCA Career Woman of Achievement Award, and received the 2019 Rosa F. and Samuel B. Sachs Fund Prize for regional arts impact and leadership.

BRIAN c. MEHRING (Scenic & Lighting Designer) (he/him) is incredibly thankful to have served as the resident scenic and lighting designer at Ensemble Theatre for over two decades. Some of his favorite productions include Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Your Negro Tour Guide, Next to Normal, An Iliad, Sweat, and Fun Home. His regional favorites for set design include The Last 5 Years and I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change, Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park; Henry IV, Part 1, The Georgia Shakespeare Festival; and I Am My Own Wife, Actors Theatre of Louisville, Peterborough Players, and Florida Studio Theatre. Brian would like to thank D. Lynn Meyers for her endless support and dedication to ETC.

STEVE GOERS (Music Director) is thrilled to return as music director at Ensemble Theatre, where some of his credits include Hands on a Hardbody, Fun Home, The Great American Trailer Park Musical, and Grey Gardens as conductor and keyboardist. He is a member of the musical theatre faculty at the University of Cincinnati's CollegeConservatory of Music and has worked locally with theatres throughout the region, including Playhouse in the Park, The Children's Theatre of Cincinnati, The Carnegie, Cincinnati Landmark Productions, and NKU. Steve has composed numerous works for a variety of media including ten feature film scores and twenty internationally produced musicals for young audiences. He has toured the U.S. and Africa with productions of Barnum, Jersey Boys, and Bubbling Brown Sugar and was featured as pianist and session producer on the album Ella Jenkins and a Union of Friends Pulling Together, which received a Grammy nomination for Best Children’s Album. When not doing shows, Steve is a keyboardist and vocalist in several local bands including the Clyde Brown Band, the Ultrasonics, Aja: A Tribute to Steely Dan, and Just Strange Brothers. He is a graduate of the DePaul University School of Music and UC-CCM.

PRODUCTION TEAM PATTI JAMES (Choreographer) taught, performed, and choreographed shows in the U.S., Canada, and Australia in the late 70s and throughout the 80s. She has choreographed numerous shows at Ensemble Theatre, as well as performed the role of Lottie in Mack and Mabel.

Patti directed and choreographed shows featuring the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, the Northern Kentucky Symphony, and a production for Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park. For twenty years, Patti was an adjunct assistant professor of musical theatre at the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music, teaching tap and jazz, as well as choreographing numerous productions. For her involvement in Cincinnati theatre, Patti received the 2009-2010 Acclaim MVP Award. Patti lives with her husband, Keith.

They have two grown daughters, Alexis (husband Emmett and children Emmett, Auggie, Darcy, and Reggie) and Chloe (husband Eric and children Fletcher and Jasper).

HANNAH DRINGENBURG (Costume Designer) is the costume shop manager at Ensemble Theatre who occasionally moonlights as a costume designer. Hannah received her BFA in costume design & technology at Northern Kentucky University and her MFA in costume technology from Ohio University. Her work has been seen on stages around Cincinnati as well as at Nashville Repertory Theatre, Monomoy Theatre, Playhouse on the Square, The Arts Center of Coastal Carolina, and many others. She is beyond grateful to be part of the ETC family.

JAKE TILLMANN (Sound Designer) is a percussionist, sound designer, audio engineer, and technician from the Cincinnati area. He has performed in and designed many productions over his twelve-year career including Godspell, The Producers, Next to Normal, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, tick, tick... BOOM!, Ride the Cyclone, and more. Jake found theater during his studies at Valparaiso University, where he obtained a degree in music industry. He has consulted and designed for many theatres, venues, studios, and other organizations across the country. Outside of music and theater, Jake can often be found traveling with his wife, Ashley, and Goldendoodle, Charlie.

SHANNON RAE LUTZ (Properties Curator/Design Assistant) (she/her) earned her master’s degree from the University of Cincinnati's College-Conservatory of Music in 1996 and became the properties curator at Ensemble Theatre. Trained as a performer, she first appeared on ETC’s stage during the 1988-1989 New Works Festival. In 1991, she was granted an ETC internship. Now the director of apprentice programming, she is honored to co-manage ETC’s Professional Apprentice Company with Torie Wiggins.

PRODUCTION TEAM JACOB DOWELL (Technical Director) (he/him) is thrilled to be in his third season at Ensemble. He received a BA in theatre from Morehead State University. Some previous technical direction credits include The Match Game, Fiona: The Musical, Hands on a Hardbody, Kinky Boots, The Who’s Tommy, and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. MARGOT WHITNEY (Production Stage Manager) (she/her) is thrilled to be back at Ensemble Theatre! Her previous credits include Sweat on Broadway and the first national tours of Clue, Mean Girls, Come From Away, Bright Star, The King & I, Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella, and War Horse. She has worked with The Public Theatre, Signature Theatre Company, New York Stage and Film, Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey, La Jolla Playhouse, Virginia Opera, Cincinnati Opera, Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati during the 2012-2013 Season, and Cincinnati Ballet. Margot received her BFA from the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music. She would like to send love and thanks to family and friends!

LEXI MULLER (Assistant Stage Manager) (she/her) is thrilled to return for her seventh season with Ensemble Theatre. Some of her ETC credits include The Wolves, Fun Home, Pipeline, Sweat, Morning Sun, and Jaja’s African Hair Braiding. Regional work includes Fiddler on the Roof, Sweeney Todd, and The Full Monty at The Human Race Theatre Company. CAMERAS & RECORDING DEVICES Actors’ Equity Association strictly prohibits the use of cameras or recording devices (including camera phones) in the theatre.

ACCESSIBILITY OPTIONS ETC offers audio-described performances, ASL-interpreted performances, wheelchair accessible seating, large-print programs, Braille programs, assistive listening devices, and sensory sensitivity items such as noisecanceling headphones and fidgets.

RELAXED PERFORMANCES Select performances offered for those with sensory sensitivities and developmental disabilities and their families to enjoy the production with lighting and sound adjustments and other accommodations.

SALE POLICY Single-ticket purchases are final sale with no refund. If a patron is a no-show for their reserved performance, ETC is under no obligation to reschedule their tickets.

LATECOMERS & ADMITTANCE Latecomers are seated at the House Manager’s discretion and may be denied admission depending upon the demands or structure of a particular production. Should you need to leave the theatre during a performance, readmittance is not guaranteed.

ETC reserves the right to deny admission and/ or remove any disruptive patrons from the theatre at any time.

PARKING Patrons may park at the Gateway Garage (accessible via 12th Street) or at the surface lot, both conveniently located at the corner of Vine and 12th Streets. Parking is also available at Washington Park Garage and Mercer Commons Garage.
