DIRECTOR'S NOTES It has been my enormous pleasure to lead this group of talented, collaborative actors in what has been a most engaging ensemble-generated rehearsal process. Working together in the rehearsal room, supported by the incomparable music direction of Scot Woolley, and the amazing design and production team here at ETC, something has come together that is truly greater than the sum of its separate parts. First Date is a perfect infusion of hope and warmth during this very chilly January. This delightful musical functions on a couple of different levels. At the heart of it lies the story of two individuals navigating their way through the uncharted territory of a blind date. Surrounding this simple narrative is a splashy musical, complete productions numbers and dancing girls, manifesting the inner voices of our two brave first-daters. All of this is brought to life on stage by a relatively small ensemble of singing and dancing actors. These smaller-cast musicals (think Dames at Sea, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee) highlight the ingenuity of their writers, the dexterity of their actors, and the imagination of their audiences. I’d like to thank everyone here at Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati for welcoming me into their artistic home so graciously. An especially large thank you to D. Lynn Meyers for trusting me with this wonderful work.
