DIRECTOR'S NOTES It’s not 1967. It’s 2015. I keep saying this to myself and out loud in rehearsal. While I am astutely aware that this play is indeed set in a tight time capsule of July 1967, the power of that capsule is far from buried. When I chose Detroit '67 as part of our season, Ferguson, Missouri had not happened. Many other incidents in our country, some of which have made headlines, most of which have not, had not happened. But the violence of July 1967, the hatred and anger that fueled those fires, is still burning.

In 2001 when the outrage at the Timothy Thomas shooting spilled out into the streets of OTR, it began across the street from ETC’s front door. We were ushered out of the building by police. We boarded up the front windows, we blacked out all electronics and we went out the back door. There was a storm cloud on that unusually hot April afternoon overhead and a storm raging up and down our streets. Words fail me to adequately describe my feelings on that day, but fear, anger and disbelief at what I was seeing would be accurate.

A few weeks ago, one of my interns told me that she and others had participated in a peaceful protest here in Cincinnati about the recent events around the country. All I could think was, but this is not 2001. It’s 2015. How, how, how is this happening again?

Detroit '67 does what great plays do. It takes a very personal story and sets it against a backdrop, which is universally relevant. We care for Lank, Chelle, Bunny, Sly and Caroline. We can see some of ourselves in each of them and in each of their dreams. What I see most is the fact that we are all entitled to dream and we should all have the chance to make our dreams a reality. The world gets in the way. Our history can’t be our legacy; we have to change the world so that our children will be able to see a different past when they look in their rear view mirror in decades to come.

Detroit '67 is not an indictment. It calls us to love and hope no matter what. I offer it to you with love and respect and with a deep hope that as Sly says, “You wanna believe stuff can happen that’ll make you smile. You wanna dream…and even if the dream don’t work out…even if it don’t last…at least it felt real good tryin’.”

THE CAST DARNELL PIERRE BENJAMIN (Sly) is feeling pretty groovy about another opportunity to work with Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati, especially in this great piece, Detroit '67, which is so applicable to the times. Previously, he appeared in Around the World in 80 Days. Having been in Cincinnati for over five years now, Mr. Benjamin has performed in and around the area quite a bit. Some of his favorites include: Titus Andronicus and To Kill a Mockingbird, Cincinnati Shakespeare Company; Cock and Angels in America, Know Theatre of Cincinnati; Othello, Human Race Theatre Company; and A Raisin in the Sun and Romeo and Juliet, Hope Summer Repertory Theatre. Mr. Benjamin is also a proud member of both Queen City Queer Theatre Collective and Pones, Inc. When not performing, he teaches Shakespeare and dance to students throughout the tri-state area.

BRYANT BENTLEY (Lank) is very excited to debut his talent here at Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati. A native of Dayton, Ohio he now resides in Columbus. He has traveled across the country performing regional theater and some of his theater credits include: Willie in Master Harold and the Boys, Clarence Brown Theater; Jackie Robinson in Most Valuable Player, Indiana Repertory Theater; Walter Lee in A Raisin In The Sun, Wright State University; Ceasar Wilkes in August Wilson's Gem of the Ocean, Human Race Theater; and A Soldier's Story and Booth in Topdog/Underdog, Phoenix Theater. He has also appeared in productions of Jitney, Two Trains Running, The Exonerated, Five Guys Named Moe, Greater Tuna, Cinderella, Blues for an Alabama Sky, Plenty Of Time, and many more. He's been nominated numerous times for his performances including for Best Actor, Tampa Bay Theater Awards, and received the Central Ohio Theaters Critics 14th Annual Poll for Seasonal Achievement Best Actor Award for his betrayal of Boy Willie in August Wilson's The Piano Lesson (CATCO Theater). He has done numerous commercials and films and his story continues. Mr. Bentley just finished his third reprisal role of Boy Willie in The Piano Lesson at the Portland Playhouse Theater, which recently made number 1 in the top Ten Best Theater in Portland. His next production will be a reprisal role of Simon in Matthew Lopez’s The Whipping Man at the Columbia Festival Of The Arts. His first performance won him the 2013 Theater Roundtable Award for Best Male Actor in a leading role.

THE CAST CONT. BURGESS BYRD (Bunny) is delighted to return to Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati. Her past shows at ETC include Love Child and the world premiere of Around the World In 80 Days.

Raised in Louisville, Kentucky she is happy to call Cincinnati home and has performed on many local stages. Some of her favorites roles include: Charlayne Woodard in the one-person shows Pretty Fire and Neat (nominated for 2004 CEA Lead Actress), Know Theatre of Cincinnati; Mrs. Muller in Doubt, Drama Workshop; Gary Coleman in Avenue Q, Showbiz Players; The Washing Machine in Caroline, or Change, New Stage Collective; and providing narration for Cincinnati Opera’s Educational Outreach Program for the regional premiere of Margaret Garner. Ms. Byrd's recent credits include: Bureau of Missing Persons, Harry and The Thief, and Afghans Womens Writers Project, Know Theatre of Cincinnati; and A Streetcar Named Desire, Covedale Center For Performing Arts.

She has worked regionally with Human Race Theatre Company, Kentucky Repertory Theatre, Porthouse Theatre, and Phoenix Theatre Circle. Many thanks to D. Lynn for this wonderful opportunity!

ZINA CAMBLIN (Chelle) is excited to be back at Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati, where she was last seen in String of Pearls.

Ms. Camblin completed her MFA in acting from UC San Diego and was a recipiant of the Juilliard Playwrighting Fellowship.

While at Juilliard, she received the Lecomte du Nouy Prize for playwrighting. Her play And Her Hair Went With Her was selected as part of Lincoln Center's Directors Lab play reading series. In addition, she has performed in several regional productions of And Her Hair Went With Her including The Phoenix Theater in Indianapolis, New Jersey Repertory Theater, and Horizon Theater in Atlanta. Past productions and workshops of her other work include: Memoirs to Live, Brooklyn Arts Exchange; Bedroom Stories, Jon Sims Center for the Performing Arts in San Francisco; Life’s a Drag, UC San Diego; and Bunni and Clyde, The Know Theater.

As an assistant writer, researcher, and actor for the Tectonic Theater Project she helped devise and perform in two of their productions, The Jonestown Project and I Think I like Girls, at The LaJolla Playhouse and Cherry Lane Theater in New York. As a writer her television credits include development projects with both NBC and Warner Bros, and being on the writing staff of the BET show Let’s Stay Together, produced by Queen Latifah. As an actor she starred in a television pilot for Disney's Beyond the Page and has done voice-over work for Disney’s educational programs.

THE CAST CONT. LESLIE GODDARD (Caroline) recently moved to Cincinnati from New York City where she performed on Broadway in Hairspray as Brenda/ Penny Pingleton (u/s). Ms. Goddard was also seen in Jersey Boys as Francine, et. al. in Las Vegas. She was awarded the League of Cincinnati Theatres’ award for Best Actress in a Musical for her work as Roxie Hart in Chicago at The Carnegie. She has also been seen locally as Missy Miller in The Marvelous Wonderettes: Caps & Gowns at Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati, Deb in Ordinary Days at Short North Stage, and Agnes Gooch in Mame and Kenni Flood in Becky’s New Car at The Human Race Theatre.

Ms. Goddard earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Drama from New York University. She is a proud member of Actor’s Equity Association.

THE PLAYWRIGHT DOMINIQUE MORISSEAU (Playwright), writer and actress, is an alumnus of the Public Theater Emerging Writer’s Group, the Women’s Project Playwrights Lab, and Lark Playwrights’ Workshop. Among her playwriting credits are: Detroit ’67 (Public Theater; Classical Theatre of Harlem/NBT; Northlight Theatre), Sunset Baby (Labyrinth Theater Co–NYC; Gate Theater–London), and Follow Me To Nellie’s (O’Neill; Premiere Stages). Her produced one-acts include: Third Grade (Fire This Time Festival); Black at Michigan (Cherry Lane); Socks, Roses Are Played Out, and Love and Nappiness (Center Stage; ATH); love.lies.liberation (The NewGroup), Bumrush (Hip Hop Theater Festival), and The Masterpiece (Harlem9/HSA).

Ms. Morisseau is currently developing a three-play cycle on her hometown of Detroit, entitled The Detroit Projects. Detroit ’67 is the first of the series. The second play, Paradise Blue, was developed with Voice and Vision, the Hansberry Project at ACT, New York Theatre Workshop, McCarter Theatre, Williamstown Theatre Festival, and the Public Theater. Ms. Morisseau’s work has also been published in NY Times bestseller Chicken Soup for the African American Soul and in the Harlem-based literary journal Signifyin’ Harlem. She is a Jane Chambers Playwriting Award honoree, a two-time NAACP Image Award recipient, a runner-up for the Princess Grace Award, a recipient of the Elizabeth George commission from South Coast Rep, a commendation honoree for the Primus Prize by the American Theatre Critics Association, winner of the Barrie and Bernice Stavis Playwriting Award, the Weissberger Award for Playwriting, the U of M – Detroit Center Emerging Leader Award, a Lark/PoNY (Playwrights of New York) Fellow, and a recent recipient of the Edward M. Kennedy Prize for Drama. She is an artist that believes wholeheartedly in the power and strength of community.

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR D. LYNN MEYERS (Director) is in her sixteenth season as the Producing Artistic Director of Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati where she has directed over fifty world and regional premieres, including Hands On A Hardbody, Rapture, Blister, Burn, Next to Normal, and The Whipping Man. She directed The Pavilion at Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park and Pride and Prejudice for Cincinnati Shakespeare Company. She directed Off- Broadway at the York Theatre with Marsha Norman’s Traveler in the Dark and James McClure’s Max and Maxie. Her several Canadian national tours included Mass Appeal with the late great Gale Gordon. As a producer for Dove Audio, she produced and directed dozens of audio books. She served as the Associate Artistic Director at Cincinnati Playhouse for several seasons where she cast over a hundred productions as well as directed. In addition to directing, she is a member of the Casting Society of America and has cast for Hallmark, PBS, CBS, BBC, HBO, Paramount, and MGM. Her feature credits include is serving as Location Casting Director for Shawshank Redemption, Carol, and Miles Ahead. She was named one of four finalists for the Zelda Fichandler National Award in 2011, honoring directors whose work is making an impact on the art form and their community. She was honored as a YWCA Woman of Achievement and given the Cincinnati Entertainment Award for Continued Excellence. She's a graduate of Thomas More College and serves on the college’s Board of Trustees.

THE PRODUCTION TEAM BRANDON T. HOLMES (Production Stage Manager) is currently in his third season with ETC. He holds a BFA from Wichita State University in Technical Theatre and Design. He served as Production Stage Manager for LOOK Musical Theatre in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He also worked with Music Theatre Wichita for four summers where he assistant stage managed over twenty productions. He moved to Cincinnati to spend two seasons at the Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park as a stage management intern. His other credits include the Cincinnati Fringe Festival, Theatre in the Park, Kansas City Starlight, and Wichita Center for the Arts. His favorite productions include Thunder Knocking on the Door, Merrily We Roll Along (directed by John Doyle), Disney’s The Little Mermaid, The Producers, Miss Saigon, Tribes, and Sunset Boulevard. Thank you to the cast and design staff for making this fantastic experience. Love to MDRJMLAT. He is a proud Actors' Equity Association member!

CHAD PHILLIPS (Costume Designer) is very excited to be back for his fifth show with Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati. His other credits for Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati include: The Mountaintop, Radio Golf, Gem of the Ocean, and The Whipping Man. He is employed with the Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park as the Costume Design Assistant. He resides in Covington, Kentucky.

PRODUCTION TEAM CONT. BRIAN c. MEHRING (Resident Set & Lighting Designer) has designed over 100 productions at ETC. His favorite productions include: Thom Pain (based on nothing), Next to Normal, 33 Variations, Freud's Last Session, and I Am My Own Wife. Mr. Mehring’s regional favorites for set design include: The Last 5 Years and I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change, Playhouse in the Park; Henry IV, Part 1, The Georgia Shakespeare Festival; and I Am My Own Wife, Actors Theatre of Louisville, Peterborough Players, and Florida Studio Theatre.

SHANNON RAE LUTZ (Properties Master/Design Assistant) earned her Master’s degree in 1996 and became Prop Master at ETC. Ms. Lutz would like to thank the Cincinnati theatre community and patrons for their generous, supportive and tenacious spirit. Trained as a performer, she first appeared on ETC’s stage during the 1989 New Works Festival. In 1991, she was granted an ETC Internship. Now the Director of Intern Programming, she is honored to guide ETC’s essential ensemble: the Intern Company. She would like to thank her family for their persistent love and support, Ruth D. Sawyer for lessons in art, life, and integrity, and D. Lynn Meyers for her dedication to our dreams.

MATT CALLAHAN (Sound Designer) was the Resident Sound Designer for Actors Theatre of Louisville for seven seasons. Most recent designs include The Pavilion, Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park; Bob, LMNO Pea, The End, Sirens, The Cherry Sisters, Ground, A Christmas Story, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Hard Weather Boating Party; Size Matters, Other Desert Cities, Mrs. Mannerly, Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati; This Beautiful City, All Hail Hurricane Gordo, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, The Tempest and Sherlock Holmes. Mr. Callahan was also a co-creator/designer of Rock n’ Roll: The Reunion Tour. He has spent two seasons as the resident sound designer at The Eugene O’Neil Center for their National Playwrights Conference.

He was formerly the sound engineer for The Steppenwolf Theatre, the Assistant Engineer for Blue Man Chicago and a member of the disbanded Defiant Theatre.

He received a Jeff Citation for Red Dragon, a nomination for Fortinbras, and a Kevin Kline nomination for Sherlock Holmes.

JACK MURPHY (Technical Director) grew up in the Cincinnati area. He went to undergrad at Hanover College where he studied technical theatre. While there he spent his summers at several different summer stock theatres such as Georgia Shakespeare Company and the Brevard Music Center’s Janiec Opera Company as a carpenter. After graduation he moved to Bellport, NY to work for The Gateway Playhouse as a carpenter and rigger. When he left Gateway, he went to work on The Pride of America, a Norwegian Cruise Line ship. After another summer at the Janiec Opera Company, he came full circle and returned home to Cincinnati.

Since he has been back, he has worked at Cincinnati Shakespeare Company and River City Scenic as well as ETC.

Weekend hours vary. VISA, MC, Discover, and AmEx are accepted, as well as Downtown Gift Cards.

TICKET RESERVATIONS & SALE POLICY Reservations can be made by calling the box office, in person, or online. Ticket reservations are not accepted via email. Single-ticket purchases are a final sale with no refund. Single tickets may, however, be exchanged for another performance during the run of a show for a fee, but may not be exchanged from one production to another. If a patron is a no-show for their reserved performance, ETC is under no obligation to reschedule his or her tickets.

TAX CREDITS If for any reason you cannot attend your performance and cannot reschedule for another date, tickets released prior to performances by calling the ETC box office are fully deductible as a charitable contribution.

No-shows or tickets released after curtain time do not qualify as tax credits.

PARKING Patrons may park at the Gateway Garage (accessible via 12th Street) or at the surface lot, both are conveniently located at the corner of Vine and 12th Streets. Parking is also available at Washington Park Garage and Mercer Commons Garage.

CHILDREN Children under the age of 4 will not be admitted to productions unless otherwise advertised. Parents with disruptive children will be asked to leave the theatre.

LATECOMERS & ADMITTANCE Latecomers will be seated at the House Manager’s discretion and may be denied admission depending upon the demands or structure of a particular production. Should you need to leave the theatre during a performance, readmittance is not guaranteed. ETC reserves the right to deny admission and/or remove any disruptive patrons from the theatre at any time.

RESTROOMS Restrooms are located at the front of the lobby. Should you need to use the restroom during a performance, please exit the theatre the same way you came in. Readmittance will be at House Manager's discretion.

ACCESSIBILITY Please notify the box office in advance if you require wheelchair-accessible seating or have special seating needs and our staff will be happy to accommodate you. Audio-enhancement available. Generally, signinterpreted performances are on the third Wednesday of every production.

CAMERAS, CELL PHONES & STAGE Actors’ Equity Association strictly prohibits the use of cameras or recording devices (including camera phones) in the theatre. Kindly turn off any cell phones or pagers prior to the show starting. Text messaging during the show disturbs other audience members and actors and will not be tolerated. For safety reasons, audience members are strictly prohibited from standing, sitting or otherwise being or putting anything onstage at any time.
