Fairy Godmother Program "HELLO, GINNY!" We begin each Fairy Godmother performance with this enthusiastic greeting to honor Ginny Hoffman, ETC's very own Fairy Godmother. The Fairy Godmother Program was founded in the memory and celebration of Ginny, an actress and theatre educator who shined on our stage from 1987 until her death in 1993. Ginny’s lasting legacy comes from her work with and dedication to children. Like the fairy godmothers she portrayed in many of our holiday productions, Ginny had a special place in her heart for sharing theatre with kids, which is why The Fairy Godmother Program not only gives the magic of theatre to children in our community, but also provides them with transportation to and from the show, a healthy snack, and take-home and classroom enrichment activities. Join the celebration as we mark this program's 31st Anniversary by donating today. Gifts from YOU, our present-day fairy godparents, enable nearly 2,000 children throughout our community to attend the holiday show each year, many of whom are experiencing live theatre for the first time. To contribute today, cash or checks will be accepted in the lobby or you can visit the box office to give via credit card. You can also donate online at www.ensemblecincinnati.org/support or by calling (513) 421-3555, option 4. Thank you for honoring Ginny's life and work by supporting this cherished program.

Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati embodies the tenacious qualities that characterize the Greater Cincinnati region: resilience, artistic passion, and pushing the creative envelope. While our neighborhood has blossomed in recent decades and ranks among the top destinations for residents and visitors alike, we are grateful that nearly 40 years ago, our pioneering founders foresaw what a meaningful investment in the arts could have on local communities. In that same spirit, our 40th Anniversary Campaign will set the stage for our 2025–2026 Season and beyond. Unpacking Lewis Carroll's Linguistic Suitcase
Ever enjoyed a ginormous brunch with a frappuccino? Or worn your comfiest athleisure to chillax and watch your favorite sitcom? Or maybe you’ve found yourself dumbfounded at a cosplay that included animatronics? If so, you’ve unpacked a fun linguistic favorite: the portmanteau! These words that combine the meanings and pronunciations of two words into one were made popular by imaginative writer Lewis Carroll, author of Alice in Wonderland. For 300 years, the word “portmanteau” only meant a type of suitcase that opens in two halves, but Carroll was the first to use it to refer to language in Through the Looking-Glass (1871), the sequel to Wonderland. In it, Alice asks Humpty Dumpty what the word “slithy” means after it’s used in a poem about the Jabberwocky, to which he replies: “Well, ‘slithy’ means ‘lithe and slimy.’ ‘Lithe’ is the same as ‘active.’ You see it’s like a portmanteau—there are two meanings packed up into one word.” Carroll introduced other double-packed words as well, including some we still regularly use today! So, if someone ever tells you that what you said isn’t a word, just give a frabjous chortle and assure them that if the whimsical characters of Wonderland can make up words, so can you!
OTHER WORDS COINED BY LEWIS CARROLL: Chortle: chuckle + snort; to chant or laugh exultantly Vorpal: voracious, sharp, or deadly; a specific type of sword used in fantasy games Galumph: gallop + triumph; to move heavily Slithy: lithe + slimy; slithery
Frumious: fuming + furious; extremely angry
Mimsy: flimsy + miserable; underwhelming, weak, or ineffectual Bandersnatch: a quick-moving creature that appears in Through the Looking-Glass; an uncouth and bizarre individual
Frabjous: fabulous + joyous; wonderful, elegant, or superb
Jabberwocky: jabber (excited, incoherent chatter) + wocor (offspring); a fantastical and frightening creature in Through the Looking-Glass; nonsensical speech or writing Boojum: a dangerous and grotesque variety of snark Snark: an imaginary animal in Carroll’s poem "The Hunting of the Snark;” possibly a portmanteau of snide + remark; rude or sarcastic comments
