The field that Gareth works in isn’t for your typical smart phone loving, hugging your besties in bizarre and inappropriate settings profession. A Stills Photographer in Film and TV is constantly making artistic and technical decisions related to the image, in a pressured environment, where the need to work quietly and efficiently is paramount. So, a career that’s a tad more skilled than the endless type of photos that you’d see strewn all over any social media platform.

Each shoot needs a personalized approach; you’re only ever as good as the last photo you’ve taken, each professional Stills Photographer has to revolutionize the way their work is conducted: they’re limited time wise, need to be creative, ingenious using available light sources, and are they’re often glued to their camera hunting for the best possible angles and the most appropriate time to release the shutter, to tell the story.

In this profession, you have to think way beyond the traditional ‘thinking on your feet’ approach, you have to be able to gauge the room and its mix of personalities in readiness to capture those magical moments. Beyond the lens.

GHQ. A common question I’m sure you’re asked. What exactly is an on-set photographer?

Gareth. It would be someone that would cover, usually two, different aspects of Film and TV, primarily Unit Stills - the vitally important photography of film sets or studio shoots that are used to create the press and publicity assets for feature films - imagery, that if they are used well, will greatly contribute to a film's box office success. In addition, we shoot behind the scenes - revealing the grand and intricate nature of the filming process, capturing those spontaneous golden moments of camaraderie between cast and crew before “action” is called. So, in summary, Unit Photographers work alongside the talent and predominantly the unit publicist to create an extensive and varied catalogue of visual material to successfully promote and market the production to a global audience.

GHQ. Working with iconic people. Some come to mind straight away, but to limit it to just a few Annette Bening, Mark Strong and Sean Bean.

Gareth. Annette Bening is a calm and gracious person. We worked together on a film called Hope Gap, that also starred Bill Nighy. The film has a wonderful cast that showed a very in-depth relationship between the two lead cast actors. Annette is a wonderful, heart-felt, articulate and graceful person. When on set with her, you immediately feel her presence. She was always respectful and giving with what was needed for the shot.

Mark Strong - what an absolute legend to work with. Mark is totally mesmerising, you are suddenly reminded how far you’ve climbed the career ladder when you’re around actors like Mark. As a unit photographer you’re essentially given a front row seat to experience a performance of a lifetime, something many only dream of. I would never have imagined such a future when growing up in our tiny corner shop in Portsmouth (laughing). The hardest part of working with Mark is remembering to hit the shutter button… I mean, he’s got that voice, hasn’t he! A real chocolate, velvety voice. I’m there to take photos, but when Mark is in full swing, I found myself being transported into his characters world - Such an amazing actor whose talent would draw you away from what you yourself are there to accomplish. There could be 200, sometimes up to 300 people on a film set, but Mark would always find time amongst the fast-paced schedule to give me what I needed for the creative team.

Sean Bean, watching him was great. It’s funny though, because sometimes you see an actor play roles and how you think they’ll be as a person in real life is quite misleading. The roles that Sean has played, typically, have been very energised and aggressive and yet, with my experience of working with him on set, it was a completely different. His energy is very set and methodical, a very laid back, chilled guy. I always enjoyed our conversations about the most surprising things. A worldly and very intelligent guy. I was amazed by the subject matter we would cover, very humbling to say the least. Much like Mark Strong, a testament to how professional and pragmatic they both are. On the rare occasion a line was missed, or something didn’t go as planned, there was no outrage or swearing, it was a simple smile, reset and carry on with filming, a really nice guy to work with. GHQ. The biggest thrill for a unit shooter?

Gareth. It’s when you get to see your work in print - always! Whether it’s the front cover of the Radio Times, a book cover, or a portrait in the back pages of a magazine, that sense of achievement justifies the crazy hours put in, the speedy dash for the last flight home and the endless miles driven… it’s got to be that. The ultimate goal… having your unit work that was shot during a live take make it into the poster, which hits billboards and seen by the world - that!

THANDIE NEWTON Once described as, “Fine-boned and softspoken, Thandie Newton displays a deceptive fragility that is betrayed by the strong, resilient characters she often portrays.”

Thandie Newton was born in London on November 06. She studied social anthropology at Downing College in Cambridge. She married Ol Parker in 1998, and the couple welcomed their first daughter, Ripley, in 2000, followed by another daughter named Nico in 2004 and a son named Booker in 2014. . She played Will Smith’s estranged wife in The Pursuit of happiness. She and Matt Dillon were part of a standout ensemble cast in the Academy Award-winning film Crash. Personal quotes include, “I don't put the pressure on myself to be a very successful movie star. I want to enjoy being an actor and I want to be challenged by the roles I take. FEAR CITY BY JASON ALLDAY

Who are The Five Families? Bonanno The Bonanno family was named after Joe Bonanno. They operate largely in Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island and Long Island. They also have influence across Manhattan, The Bronx, and many more.

Colombo There’s good news for true crime fans as Netflix’s latest offering, Fear City: New York vs. The Mafia, will land on Wednesday 22nd July. The series, which was made by the Don’t Fuck With Cats team, will consist of three episodes. The new Netflix series follows the Five Families of New York, who without compromise and with a level of ruthlessness ruled “Fear City” in the 1970s and 1980s.

Netflix describes the three-part series as “the inside story of the rise and fall of New York’s most powerful Mafia families and the end of the golden era of the Mob. With the full might of the FBI and an army of undercover agents, witness the bugging, the investigation, and the era-defining conclusion of the historic Mafia Commission Trial that changed everything.”

The Colombo family was named after Joseph Colombo. They operate in Brooklyn, Queens and Long Island, but also have influence in Staten Island, Manhattan, and Florida, among others.

Gambino The Gambino family, which operates in Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, Staten Island and Long Island was named after Carlo Gambino. They also have links in Los Angeles, Michigan, Florida and others.

Genovese The Genovese family was named after Vito Genovese, and they operate mainly in Manhattan, The Bronx, Brooklyn, and New Jersey – they also have influence in Westchester County, Connecticut and Massachusetts, among others.

Lucchese According to Fear City director Sam Hobkinson, New York was a dangerous place to be in the 70s and 80s, when he was growing up there. “You wouldn’t go there, because everyone said it was too dangerous – and for that reason, it was exotic,” he told Rolling Stone.

The Lucchese family is named after Tommy Lucchese. They operate in The Bronx, Manhattan, Brooklyn and New Jersey. They also operate in Westchester County and Florida, among others.

In an interview, Former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani explains the influence of the Mafia in New York City and just how powerful the families truly were.“It was the golden era of the mob,” another interview subject says in the Netflix trailer. “The FBI couldn’t keep up with us. There was no way.” Using “unheard secret FBI tapes,” archival footage and news reports, as well as interviews with law enforcement and ex-Mafia members, Fear City explores how the Mafia was able to build an organized crime empire and take control of the city for years.

The Five Families in tv and film Hobkinson cites Francis Ford Coppola’s 1974 film The Conversation as an inspiration for the series, in the way it pieces together archival audio and footage to tell a crime story. “Most mob stories are told from the point of view of the mobsters but we decided the main thread of the narrative would be the FBI investigation. Then, generically, it becomes a techno-spy thriller with all the bugging and surveillance… Our incredible team of researchers managed to unearth amazing surveillance tapes that haven’t been heard before and hundreds of photographs that haven’t been seen.”

Mario Puzo’s The Godfather from 1969 uses The Five Families as inspiration. In Puzo’s novel, the Barzinis, Corleones, Cuneos, Straccis and Tattaglias have control. That’s the same in the films, too. HBO’s Boardwalk Empire portrays the life and rise of Charles Luciano (played by Vincent Piazza) to power – he was the figure who set up The Commission. The Sopranos tv series also use the Mafia’s true story for inspiration.

KLOPP THE START OF A GENIUS Klopp played for the ‘TuS Ergenzingen,’ as a junior player. Later, he played for the ‘1. FC Pforzheim.’ During his teenage years, Klopp played for three football clubs from Frankfurt, the ‘Eintracht Frankfurt II,’ the ‘Viktoria Sindlingen,’ and the ‘Rot-Weiss Frankfurt.’ In 1995, he received a diploma in sports science, from the ‘Goethe University of Frankfurt.’ Klopp started his football career as a player, with the club, ‘Mainz 05.’ But, it wasn’t all roses in the beginning, as reports suggest that Klopp was a mediocre player in his early days. Klopp started his football career as a player, with the club, ‘Mainz 05.’ After his retirement from the field, Klopp was appointed as the manager of the same club. He served as the longest serving manager of the ‘Mainz 05,’ and led the team to greater heights. Later, Klopp joined the ‘Borussia Dortmund,’ as their coach. He led the club to victory in the ‘Bundesliga’ football competitions, in two consecutive years. Klopp has been awarded the title of the ‘German Football Manager of the Year,’ in two successive years.

Liverpool Calling Klopp was appointed manager of Liverpool in 2015. He guided the club to successive UEFA Champions League finals in 2018 and 2019, winning the latter to secure his first – and Liverpool's sixth – title in the competition. Klopp's side also finished second in the 2018–19 Premier League, registering 97 points; the third-highest total in the history of the English top division, and the most by a team without winning the title. In the following season, Klopp won the UEFA Super Cup and Liverpool's first FIFA Club World Cup, and maintained a 44 game unbeaten run in the league – the second-longest in top-flight history, as he secured Liverpool's nineteenth league title, the club's first during the Premier League era.

2020 CHAMPIONS GHQ SIN CITY Jürgen Klopp has said to have declared an immense pride, at being in charge of this Liverpool squad, that he believes has now created its own chapter in the club's rich history. On Thursday evening, The Reds were confirmed as Premier League champions for the very first time, clinching the title with a recordbreaking seven fixtures remaining in the 2019-20 campaign It ended a 30-year wait for the top-flight crown and, speaking exclusively to Liverpoolfc.com the morning after the celebrations, the boss detailed just how his players were able to achieve the monumental feat. In an interview with LFCTV, Jürgen Klopp when asked how did he feel after the announcement, was reported as saying, “Good! Pretty good. Honestly, it’s still not settled, still not really got it, but it feels brilliant. It was big and it was a wonderful experience. The whole ride is a wonderful experience but especially last night. It was very special. When people spoke about it and thought maybe it’s better to win it against City when we play them [next week] on the pitch, but honestly after the 97 points ride last year plus extension with the Champions League, and this season, and all the years before chasing the Champions League spot, I was thinking I want it as early as possible. So, I was completely fine with last night

FOOTBALL LEGEND There was a nice little side story that Christian Pulisic had his hand in it with a really nice goal. Honestly, I couldn’t feel better. It’s just a big relief and it feels like freedom, whatever, I don’t know exactly. It’s good.”

In another report, The Liverpool manager vowed his record-breaking team “will not stop” after winning the club’s coveted 19th league title in addition to the Champions League and Club World Cup inside the last 13 months. Klopp’s achievements are worthy of immediate recognition with a statue at Anfield, according to Steven Gerrard, who believes the 53-year-old ranks alongside Bill Shankly, Bob Paisley and Kenny Dalglish as iconic managers for the club.

It would be an obvious point to say that Klopp’s immediate focus would be on breaking Manchester City’s record of 100 points. “I’ve had good parts in my career but not this good,” he said. “It is second to none that I know to be honest. It is difficult to get here and it is all about the boys’ commitment, desire and understanding of the club’s heart and soul. The consistency the boys have showed is exceptional. We will not stop. We have to – and we will – stay focused. We see the opportunity. ‘We will not stop’ doesn’t mean that we will win everything. We just want to improve.”

Liverpool’s manager, players and coaching staff celebrated their title triumph at Formby Hall Golf Resort, having relocated their bubble after Wednesday’s win against Crystal Palace.

The importance and necessity of

Photojournalism

Photojournalism – noun the art or practice of communicating news by photographs Photojournalism is presenting news material for publication or broadcast. It by all means is a much far more accurate way of telling or reflecting a current situation or event for the world to see than your more ‘traditional’ reporting. There’s an unquestionable amount of truth in an unaltered or edited photo than any written or spoken event. Mainstream media and journalism have, mostly, lost any amount of credibility with a large percentage of the populace. The one-sided, biased ‘story telling’ through reporting, as it’s now become known, remains divisive and untrustworthy. A photograph on the other hand can be closer to the truth. On the 14th of August 1945, a photo was taken showing a sailor kissing a woman in a nurse’s outfit in Times square, New York. That photo was of George Mendonsa and Greta Zimmer Friedman. That same photo later became known as one of the most memorable photos on V-J Day, it was the day Japan surrendered to the United States. It was a photo, that gave both celebration and relief to hundreds of millions worldwide, to the end of a conflict. But if that photo hadn’t been taken, what would have been known or understood about a part of history where mankind would appreciate peace more than war. If someone that had witnessed that event firsthand, had then later told you of the event, would you have gained any inspiration or been able to reflect upon that moment with as much appreciation or understanding as you would have without the photograph? To rely on the written word or speaker of events as a source, can be a discredit to a large part of our past and history. It has been said that only extremists are the purveyors of burning books and desecrating of historical artifacts, as the most consistent truth remains, “history is only recorded by the victor.” Without a photo you have nothing to measure societies gains as much as losses. It was once written that, “Photography allows people to communicate what is important to them, helps to preserve history, facilitates communication, enables people to become artists and moves people in ways that words sometimes cannot.”

So, ask yourself when you see a photo of Auschwitz, (also known as Auschwitz-Birkenau) the Nazi concentration and death camp, was the photo taken to later celebrate the (thankfully) short lived reign of the Nazi party, or was the photo taken to remind all future generations of the failure of humanity and in doing so would promote to save innocent lives as well as demonstrating the evil of despot rulers? There would be no photos, no history and nothing to learn from. A photo can be a far greater preserver of history and truth than a story whispered down through the generations. Capturing an event through a lens gives more in terms of realization and capturing the moment than any written word ever can. A photo remains subjective, allows a person to catalogue indisputable facts and coherent about intuition and hope. When many people have wanted to look back on events and gain an insight or invoke a memory, they look for a photo that froze a segment of time, more than the written word.

Our pictures capture the events in Glasgow’s George Square recently as tensions in the city boil over into some of the worst violence in recent years. Glasgow Photojournalist, Brian Anderson has captured some of the biggest stories over the last 25 years in the city and abroad, including the death of Princess Diana to the Lockerbie Bomber.
