start off by confirming the GHQ team have successfully acknowledged that no useless, pointless amounts of ads and self-serving promotions have made it into another edition of our brain-child; no carbon based Mars equipped tools, no 2 million pounds worth of diamond encrusted shoes or endless photos of the champagne socialites attempting to ‘fit-in’ with what and who we are – but what we do have is relatable everyday trainers and polos that all will find in their own wardrobes that are lining up for a Friday night out or a weekend jolly-up - So, perfect.

Attention Hollywood –

SPOTLIGHT – ACTRESS JOANNA PICKERING CLASS

Is there something missing, is there a niche and a void? I’d have to answer with a resounding YES! Diversity, expression, creativity, amongst other much needed and must-haves in the arts and entertainment world is an area that still needs addressing. But thankfully a level of authenticity and value has been infused and the answer is Joanna Pickering. She comes with a fresh face and nitro-fueled skillset – She really does bring a sense of invincibility to the once invisible. Joanna brings more than the standard shapes and shades, all too often seen with other actresses. What she brings are geometric shapes and shades in her arsenal of well-versed abilities and she’s brinkering on the outskirts of the Hollywood radar – There’s more room up-front for another wonder woman and she’s working her way in.

Joanna is an award nominated British actress, writer, and activist and she’s nursing real ambition back to life! She was born in North England, where she was awarded an academic scholarship and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics. But following her passion and love for the dramatic arts, she moved to New York City, worked as a model, and trained at The Lee Strasberg Institute. I’ll happily add to that impressive resume with the young British, she’s a must have to any structurally sound cast, that there’s an element missing if not on any casting call.

Joanna has written for stage with Primitive Grace Theater ensemble from 2018 to 2020.

Her play 'Beach Break' was a top five finalist radio broadcast for HBO's ITV 2018, aired on British radio in 2018, after debuting at the Bridge Theater, New York. Her writing has received scholarships, fellowships and grants with The American Dramatist Guild, Rohm literary agency alongside Margaret Atwood Agent, and her full play is in development with academy winning screenwriter, director, and producer Bobby Moresco, and directed by Amanda Moresco at The Actors Gym, NY — pre Covid.

It is now awarded a scholarship to mentor with Kelly Edwards Vice president HBO talent development/programming at part of Rocaberti Writers retreat, as a screen adaptation.

Her debut film 'Boardwalk' was nominated for best film and best suspense thriller at NYC Web Fest 2019. Her acting credits include independent films from screening at The Whitney Museum of American Art, ‘Pelleas’ alongside Alice Eve (Star Trek) in The Incomplete History of Protest exhibition, and award-winning film 'Four Keys'.

Her stage credits include performing Lady Macbeth and King Herod as well as performing Eve Ensler's The Vagina Monologues. 2020 was to see her debut theatrical movie release in her principal role in ‘Alice Fades Away’ with star cast, principal role in indie New York TV series “Street Smart.” as well as her small role in Creation Stories directed by Nick Moran and executively produced by Danny Boyle. In her spare time, she speaks on Women in Film panels, jury president of NY2PARIS/ NYIIF film festival, advisory board member for The Chelsea Film Festival, and participant speaker for UN Create2030. A scorecard is almost needed to keep up with all those vying for the attention of success and promise, but Joanna’s ahead in many areas – by our interpretation, she’s holding the card, the pen and writing her own success story.

GHQ - An academic background in science - you saw ( I believe) a career in tv and film more than one that would be promoted and reinforced by your schooling and impressive academic achievements?

Joanna - No! Film and TV were never on my mind. I love science. I did pure math. It’s also an art, you know — perhaps the highest form of art. They teach it all wrong in schools. I arrived in film and TV by eliminating what not to do. I didn’t want to work on Wall Street. I didn’t want to make arcane equations that make the rich richer and poor poorer in banking. I may have gone to NASA, or into quantum and theoretical physics—I was speaking to Oxford the other day about avenues for a masters in this—but, the truth is, back then, public speaking was the next challenge. I wasn’t just shy, I was terrified. I did some acting classes to overcome this and fell in love with the magic of performing.

I never left the dramatic arts. I felt most at home as an eccentric, rebel, mathematician with the artists. The only downside is, now, if I’m in in Hollywood, in a bikini by a pool, people can forget I have these achievements. They should watch Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr story. And, as writer, you’d be surprised how much the skills overlap.

When I shift around in a fictional world, solving logic in plot and structure, or dialogue rhythm, it’s not so different. trying to crack an equation in another dimension.

GHQ - You speak with a sense of passion when talking about independent film - what does indie films allow that can’t be captured in mainstream / high budget films?

Joanna - It allows freedom. I learnt everything on indie sets because you have the freedom to experiment and explore. I am also playing the lead roles in an indie. You contribute 100% to the creative process and outcome.

The same applies for all filmmakers. That is why I learnt to write in theater. Wherever there is less money, the creator has more control over their work. As a playwright, I got to direct my actors in the theater over two years.

I had full control over the process of work. The end result is that the audience is allowed closer to the real vision of the artist—before money starts compromising it, and our more diverse unique choices are ruled out.

GHQ - When you give reference to writing, I interpret writing is a salvation for you?

Joanna - You may be right. My lack of salvation gave me writing material. I wrote my memoirs under a pen name when I was young. Most people write their memoirs later, but I got them out the way. I was traveling the world. I had nothing but a pair of denim cut offs, a bikini, and about ten bucks in my back pocket. There were always wild tales. When most say, “This is nuts. I’m outta’ here.” I’d hang around, saying, “Okay! What happens next?” That is great for writing. I always knew I could write. I left it to later to learn the craft as a professional writer—either, because I knew it would work out, as my salvation, or because the fear of rejection, when you believe something about yourself, is far greater. Either way, to write you need to have lived. Toni Morrison said don’t write until you’re much older. Rather than a preservation or saving yourself, it’s a processing of your past life experiences.

So, I think you’re right. I think they go hand in hand.

GHQ - Writing in different places- can this bring a level of ‘individual creativity’ only found in those places - for example your visits to France and Argentina?

Joanna - I think your voice and style is yours and should be more consistent, but that has already been nurtured by your own choices how to explore. What is vital is —writing needs story. It needs characters. It’s about daring to go to the ends of the world and meet people you’ve never met before and listen to their stories. A writer needs an excellent memory, or to be a great thief, or both. Nothing inspires a writer more than another culture that I am aware. We are vampires and people and place feed us. I’ve lived all over—South America, to Africa, an island in the Baltic, to the glitz of the South of France. I’ve always been surrounded by characters, but it’s those small specific fragile moments in humanity that I treasure. I use everything.

GHQ - You’re very well versed - theatre, tv, a writer and film - an impressive list thus far - a huge commitment has been invested by you - what is your drive?

Joanna - I’ve always been driven to be successful, but I won’t compromise my artistic integrity. It’s a tough path as an artist. I don’t give up. It is not only my passion and my career, but it is my identity. I am an artist—it defines me. The artist at core, is driven by the passion to create, and to look at the order of things—very similar to abstract math, or philosophy. The drive is to find out more, to keep digging in further into this thing called life, and to work on yourself, and society’s structure.

SPOTLIGHT JOANNA PICKERING GHQ - Great British actors - who would you say was your first impressionable lead in tv and film?

Joanna - I’m an epic romantic and first fell in love with Julie Christie in Dr Zhivago—she remains the one and only woman I’ve stolen fashion style from. I have always been influenced by old classic Hollywood movies too for the performance, the style and photography.

GHQ - What is missing in British film and tv that you feel can be improved on?

Joanna - I am mainly in US now, but I know everywhere —its female and black narrative, stories written by female and black writers, and with female and black leads. Overall, more diversity in all minorities and not forgetting transgender narrative. We are making inroads, but we need to do a lot more. It is exciting to be with a science background as a female writer, because female science narratives are greatly under-represented, so someone needs to tackle that. I am about to collaborate with a new award-winning writer, Richa Rudola, on creating a science story I have.

GHQ - Any budget - Your film - your choice of theme or subject matter - your dream cast and subject matter?

Joanna - If I have to think up an imaginary film—I'd have to pick my own TV pilot in development! I can’t say much— a Games of Thrones actress got the bible, and loved it, but it doesn’t mean anything in my industry right now. I am very new, so I have to keep writing at this stage. My themes are dark power dynamics, the female perspective, often along a grey line—there’s always a mystery. My producer read my work and said you’re influenced by film noir. It’s true. A dream cast for film noir? Hard to beat Double Indemnity with Fred Macmurray, Barbara Stanwyck, and more so, for Edward G Robinson performance. I watched it last night. As a writer, I’m into story and dialogue—“Darling, I knew I loved you when I couldn’t shoot you the second time”—now, that’s a dream line.

GHQ – INTERVIEW

GHQ - Your part in the new Creation Stories based on the music guru Alan McGee film - anything you can tell us about your part?

Joanna - There were talks at the onset I may play a lead role as Kate—Alan’s wife, and lead singer of Client, but, of course, it went to a star name, and she was brilliant.

However, all these characters in the story of Creation were cast for day player or supporting roles. Irvine is in it with a wig. He’d written this role as a heroin addict schoolteacher, so I had a laugh shooting that. I worked with Ewen Bremner; so, I saw his performance as McGee – that is superb. I was shooting with Carl Barat from the libertines on set too. It was hilarious. I didn’t recognise him after hair and make-up. I hadn’t seen him for years. We had a laugh. I always remember rock and roll being laughing or melting down. The film will capture that. We’re in it some mad story, due to the mastermind that is McGee, which he calls magic. I’ll tell you a story—McGee used to do magic. He was into Alistair Crowley. He once gave me a wand to help with my career. He cast a spell on it. I was flying to New York with a 22-kilo baggage allowance and he gave me a 10-kilo real chakra crystal stone wand. I could barely pick it up. I didn’t have the heart to tell him I couldn’t fly with it, so I got it from Wales, where we had been shooting a movie with Dean Cavanagh, which is a movie in itself, to my mom’s house. I said can you look after this for me. It’s funny because my mom is one of the most successful head teachers in London—she was called a Super Head in her day and was headhunted for turning around inner-city schools. A week after getting this wand, she left my dad in France, got a bright red biker leather jacket, and moved into a bachelor pad in London. I’m not sure what spell he did.

They’re back together in France now.

GHQ - What are you working on now?

Joanna - I was expecting to see my movies I’ve worked on so hard hit the US cinema screens this year—I thought I’d finally got the ball in the back of the net, but I had not predicted a global pandemic. I am very lucky to write. I am adapting my play to screen for my awarded scholarship with a mentor at HBO.

KEVIN LESLIE

Kevin Leslie With GHQ Kevin Leslie is an up and coming, award winning London based actor, critically acclaimed for his portrayal of Reggie Kray in Rise & Fall of The Krays. There’s no level of arrogance with Kevin when discussing his accomplishments - he’s simply an actor who identifies with the craft, is willing to fill any shoes that will allow him to respectively show he has what it takes to master the art and be counted alongside other actors within the fraternity of British greats.

Born in Shrewsbury and spending his formative years in Edgmond, near Newport, Mr. Leslie's interest in acting was triggered in year nine at Thomas Telford School. Kevin is no stranger to the ‘roots’ of acting. His love of acting was born as a pupil at Shropshire's Thomas Telford School.

When asked about his start, he humbly replied, "I started to perform in school productions and the first one was West Side Story - I loved it, the passion for acting built from there.” Kevin also established himself in theatre touring with English Touring Theatre on Eternal Love directed by John Dove and was an original cast member in Jessica Swale’s Blue Stockings at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre

Kevin gained a distinction in his BTEC, tried his hand at physical theatre and then enrolled on a BA Honours course in acting at Arts University Bournemouth. The actor, who graduated in 2010, is not phased by the competition, as the only person you’re competing with is yourself. Instead of adopting the age old, ’competitive’ view of others, Kevin embraces and welcomes all walks and styles of acting to learn by.

Kevin, who has also played leads in the films, 13 Graves, Pearls of Africa and played the understudy lead in, Eternal Love with the English Touring Theatre, when asked about his role in The Rise of the Krays, said the experience of playing a real person was “nerve-racking but exciting.”

“When it’s a fictional character you’re starting from scratch and creating every aspect of the person but when the person is real, you already have a strong starting point. I had to read a lot of literature and John Pearson’s ‘Profession of violence’ and Reg Kray ‘Born Fighter’ became my bibles. It’s fascinating to read what people say about Reggie and what he said about himself.”

It was a time of lives being challenged, routines being questioned, a social awareness and the outbreak of the global Corona pandemic, but even amongst such dark and testing of times, Kevin Leslie brings a bright and enthusiastic level of energy and has a sit down with GHQ to share his thoughts and ideas on all things film.

Jason. So, your start was in 2010 that gave birth to your acting in both a commercial and national level

Kevin. Yes, that’s correct; it was shortly after I graduated.

Jason. Not long after, you landed an impressive and probably one of the most impressionable roles as Reg Kray in the film, The Rise of the Krays (2015), followed by the second in the series, The Fall of the Krays (2016). Did you feel any pressure taking and portraying the character, not because Reg was a person of such notoriety, but being it is a very heavily documented and talked about historical figure?

Kevin. If I’m completely honest, it didn’t really hit home until we were done with the production of the films. Largely being it was such a quick turnaround for us. It remains one of the fondest memories I have as an actor, it was an intense filming schedule. I mean myself and another actor auditioned on the Wednesday afternoon, the following Monday we’re filming. In hindsight there would be things I would have liked to have changed; with the small amount of knowledge we were able to gain in that time frame.

In a weird way, I somewhat grew with the character - because of a lack of knowing who Reg was, the more we filmed, the more I learned and the character and a lot of the stories surrounding him. We were filming in a very linear way, so by the time we’d come to the film, the Fall of the Krays, I’d adopted a better understanding through reading and literally using text and written accounts on the Krays, it actually helped me. We started as cheeky chaps, getting into small amounts of trouble and petty crime with the police to then adopting the more serious side of their known crimes. I’d say the most difficult part of the role was the conflicting reports and representation of who the twins were.

One story had Ronnie as unhinged, crazy, unpredictable and he really was lethal.

Another source would have him as the more friendlier than Reg. So, from an acting perspective, it was interesting to discover the roles as we were going along with them.

Jason. You’d gained an impressive amount of acting experience prior to the filming of the Kray’s films; would you say you’d had any roles or exposure that contributed to the role and character of Reg Kray.

Kevin. Obviously as an actor, yes because every job that you’re doing you are always learning, challenging yourself and gaining experience. But, no in the sense that this was the first time in my career I’d actually felt the pressure and responsibility of a position I was in, being it was a joint-lead role, everything sat on our shoulders in that we had to set the bar, carry and maintain a high-level of what was expected each and every take. Both myself and Simon Cotton knew very early on we had to set a very high milestone.

Jason. What productions since the Kray’s series have held a meaningful or special place for you?

Kevin. There are two sides to that. There’s the ‘action’ side of me where I co-produced with a dear friend and business partner of mine, Patrick Ryder, we did a film called, ‘The Code’, that’s basically about three soldiers in the Essex regiment during World War 2 who were separated and trying to get back home. The story was largely about trying to stay alive and protecting and being there for the guy to your left and the one to your right. That film holds dear to my heart because how little facilities we had and it’s actually up on Amazon Prime now. But because it was also limited in budget, we still managed to get this really authentic World War 2 film that feels a part of the time. When you do a film like that, that was made on such a low budget, the people involved were only paid a minimum of what they should’ve got for their skillset, but they still did it, the entire budget was only 5 thousand pounds. There are people that wouldn’t get out of bed for anything less than that a day, but the people involved did it more because there was a mutual love for what we were doing.

You’re asking people who are really talented and really good at what they do, to bring their A-game, but to be paid a lot less. The other film would be The Escort, based on the subject matter, where the other half of me likes the narratives or films that can change people’s lives. Films that have always had a big effect on me, are one’s that socially or politically challenge the world, or can highlight a person or their story as a character that comes good or the under-dog. The Escort is one of those films The writer/ director, Bizhan Tong is an incredible film maker, who gave a story of how he was propositioned whilst waiting for an evening meeting. This encounter made him question why the woman that approached him - as she was beautiful and intelligent - was doing this type of work. So, he interviewed some escorts, trying to understand and give them a voice, to maybe change an opinion on why people might escort. There’s a presumption that all escorts commit to this type of work because they come from either a broken or abusive home, drug abuse and may have underlying issues. When what materialized, was there’s times a girl might be trying to pay her way through business school and escorting was a good avenue.

Jason. Is there a type or genre that appeals to you, not in the sense as an actor, but that draws you in as a consumer?

Kevin. I’m drawn to action films in terms of entertainment. I grew up watching Star Gate SG 1; I think it was an incredible TV series, exploring space and having epic battles as much as I’d love to be part of big films like the Steven Spielberg’s, Saving Private Ryan or with Denzel Washington in something like The Equalizer. Things like that, I have a big interest in. But, equally as much I like drama and films that you can see changes in character’s lives within the context of the story – ‘It’s A Wonderful Life is one of my all-time favourites. It’s a beautiful story about a man who doesn’t realise how rich he is, mainly because how meaningful and dependent the community are on him, it’s such an important and timeless message that is captured in the film. For me success is a matter of perception, and I think that can be very much misinterpreted in today’s society. Wealth can be presented in many ways.

Jason. Do you think Hollywood will always be a dominating force with respect to iconic films?

Kevin. Do I think they’ll always dominate in terms of big budget films, then yes because they’ve got the money to do so, and that’s not a bad thing. I mean I’m speaking to a few independent film makers, who’ve got some really impressive scripts, but due to the lack of or no budget, will struggle to get them made. The cost involved when making a period piece is phenomenal – tanks, explosions and the set. In terms of ground-breaking, indie films, they don’t have the luxury of being able to fall back on a big budget, like Ken Loach who is a master at making poignant Indie social and political films. I think that Hollywood will always be a force, but I think original and authentic films will always be at an indie level

Jason. What would you like to see more of in main-stream movies?

Kevin. A lot more films with original and authentic content. Indie-films, again there’s some great scripts out there.

OZZIE SMITH GHQ Snatched – John ‘Ozzie fucking’ Smith

It never gets old - the glossy brand of ‘geezer chic’ that was best presented by Guy Ritchie’s Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch, that was let loose on the world all those years ago.

But shocking as it may seem, certain elements of Guy Ritchie’s films have been rumored to carry elements of stories based around actual people and events. Taking note of one of the best characters was Brad Pitt’s role as, the traveler, ‘one-punch’ Micky O’Neil,’ or, ‘fucking pikey’, as referred to in many of the classic one-liners delivered in the script.

The truth is there’s a large traveling populace within the U.K, boasting a sizable fighting community. As it’s been said to me on many occasions by my traveler friends, “fighting - it’s what we do!”

If there was ever a script in the making based on actual people, then there’s a good few that remain, largely in the shadows. But, if there’s a box to be ticked for meeting the requirements for such a character and story, then look no further than our young traveler mate, John ‘Ozzie fucking’ Smith’

SNATCHED Ozzie, as he insists his friends call him, has all the activity typically associated with a bull in a china shop, but confusingly enough, employs a high level of decorum. He’s got all the character, charm and wit of any fast talking, quick witted traveler but, with an extra touch of class. He plays daily with a fast and loose sociology-textbook-full of characters, many of which are closely related, befriended from early childhood and vetted through like-minded people.

There’s not a day goes by that Ozzie isn’t fighting, managing business dealings or implying a persona of ‘go fast, get rich and hang on tight, this could be a bumpy (ride for you)’. He really employs a daily kinetic lifestyle and decision process that’s hard to keep up with or understand if you’re the type that sits in an office and waits for the weekend.

There’s criticism that will be given to Ozzie's past practices and life choices.

Some of his earlier decisions in life stumbled on tricky ground involving an association and presence in the underworld and organized crime but knowing and having Ozzie both by your side and his friendship are genuinely priceless.

In his life, Ozzie has gone upmarket, through the market and made a market - it’s now Ozzie’s story could be called, ‘marmite’ - you either love it, or it’s not for you.

Ozzie is well known in the travelling Community. He is from Wisbech. His past careers can be likened to a sleuth chic nouveau cast of characters from any of either Guy Ritchie or Quinten Tarrintino productions. They have included, but not limited to debt Collector (where he gained the nick-name Ozzie fucking smith’) Bare Knuckle Fighting, Boxing and MMA. It’s been long rumored he met and was friendly with a high-ranking family member, who hails from north London whilst Ozzie was serving 11 years for his key role in the ATM Robberies in early 2000.

OZZIE SMITH A few years ago, Ozzie was remanded for several months for an alleged attempted murder, that involved the shooting of an Irish traveler in Essex. He is very proud, not only of his heritage past but also by living by a code similar to that of many highly credited career criminals - ‘your own’

He married one of the World’s Best Woman Professional Golfer’s Britain’s Charley Hull, they married in September 2019 now going through a Divorce.

He Globe-trotted all over the World with her in the Golfing Tournaments, was in the Royal Box with her at Wimbledon last year watching Nadal v Federer July 2019.

Area grew up in: From Peterborough in Cambridgeshire but grew up every we’re travelers; we were all over the country

Most commonly known thing about me: A boxer, cage fighter and a debt collector. On a friendly level I’m the original ‘cheeky chappy who goes 100-mile hour, but I will always be a gypsy you don’t fuck about with.

Jason. What are your earliest memories you have as a traveler as a child?

Ozzie. Well my earliest memories of being a traveler would be the family moving from place to place. Long before the perversion and dilution of family values, we held very strongly with our close-nit family tradition of involved in everything we did. This included sitting around the campfire and your grandparents telling stories of old bare knuckles fights and tales and you being young will have to learn ‘the stock and trade.’ It’s funny to her people from outside the traveling community give criticism to this tradition, but will sit in awe at films like 300 when young children were taught the necessary disciplines and benefits of learning how to toughen-up and learn how to defend themselves against people trying to take from you that wasn’t theirs to take.

Knowing where you were on the social ladder was important. You were humbled by the people that you should respect the most. Your grandparents have earned the right to lead the family.

They’ve put their time in and are around because they’ve gained the experience in matters that we understand and value. You were toughened-up as a kid. It can help you understand a lot about life, our way of life. By accepting and learning the fighting traditions in a traveling family and community allows to lead and preserve not only your family, but the values and history of our community. Fighting teaches you how to hold up your hands and your head high. A family is successful because of strong leadership and who's willing to fight for that same belief. We’re taught not to back down or allow people to take the piss. You’d be surprised how many businessmen have come to us because of cowards and thieves who’ve ripped them off and then hide behind laws and escape through loopholes. The straight goer would’ve have lost everything he’s worked hard for - they come to people like me and other travelers. We’ve saved them and their hard-earned fortunes more than any court in the land.

I remember when I was about 4 years old. We had pitched up at Epsom races; anyone knows this is a hot spot for travelers. Anyway, it was early hours of the morning when I went to go to the toilet and saw my dad in the middle of a circle of men. He was bare knuckle fighting another traveler. This was how a lot of disputes were settled, and a few quid could be earned too.

Jason. With the traveling community your fighting name was worth more than any amount of money or gold?

Ozzie. In the traveler Community your name and your fighting name was without question worth more than money, silver or gold! Your name is like an international passport between the traveling community. It gets you respect and loyalty, something largely ignored by the ignorant mainstream press. When I go anywhere in my world, everyone knows the loyalty and respect that is carried with both my family name and me, Ozzie fucking Smith. The last name I have to earn by standing and maintaining a traditional traveler’s code and by my own efforts.

Jason. Tell me the story of your dad coming home late at night, waking you up to have a fight when you were 7.

Ozzie: Well to understand that story you have to remember that from an early age, we (travelers) were taught not only the benefits but the principles of fighting and we never walk away from a fight- ever! It was typical a fight would come from a simple conversation between two families, or more specifically when your dad would come back late from the pub. Like I said, normally there’d been a disagreement over something between the men of the traveling community, that now extended to you resolving the dispute by fighting one of their sons. On one occasion my dad come into the trailer shouting, “Ozzie, Ozzie wake up you’ve got to fight! There’s a man telling me his boy is better than you and we’re not having that. Oh, and there’s £50 riding on you to win” So, I’m taken from my bed and matched up against this other gypsy boy. I’m then led to the centre of a makeshift ring that was made-up of the men’s cars with their headlights on, acting as a sort of arena. So here I am, early hours of the morning, facing what appeared to be really scrawny boy.

The fight went on for about 15 minutes. During the entire time, there’s men shouting at you, and above all of the shouting and voices, I could hear my dad reminding me I’m fighting for the family name and not to lose that respect. Fair to say my dad walked with an extra £50, but something even more was never taken from the Smith’s - the loss of a fight. If you were to ask the other boy what he won, he would tell you he won in an equal way, by both walking away and supporting his dad. I went and had a quick wash and was then sent back to bed.

Jason. What was your first serious crime?

Ozzie: My first serious crime was committed when I was about 15. I started doing ram-raids on businesses.

I would make the older boys take me to earn money for my family. This is where we all begin to earn serious money and how, ‘Ozzie fucking smith’ started to build his name

Jason: I have to ask, being we’re both fans of the film, Snatch, Brad Pitt and the role he played. My opinion, he played that role well - he captured the essence and the story - what did they miss?

Ozzie: Brad Pitt did an amazing job and I liked the way the film showed travelers aren’t the stereo typical uneducated people that can be taken advantage of. I always laugh when I see how the media and mainstream portray us living in horse shit and squalor. My residence is spotless, in fact most travelers have homes that they consider a reflection of who they are - clean and hardworking people with morals and principles. I’ve never had any broken washing machines or cars around my home. My cars are nothing short of class and I’ve never sat on a crate outside my home wearing an oversized jumper nor do I own any Wellington boots. It’s ignorant humor and that’s why I found it funny. And before anyone asks, no one around me does hare-coursing and no traveler in his life bet his dog would miss the hare.

Jason: The biggest names in the traveler community that you respect?

Ozzie: Smiths obviously, Frankhams, Dohertys, Joyce’s, Stokins, Fury’s and the Saunders. These are all big family’s, who have big followings. There will always be one in each family, that leads, and everyone respects, as he’s the head of that family name. All these families have earned their respect - good people who identify and align with the traditions within the traveling community.

Jason: You married up… up and went market!

Ozzie: Yes, I married Charley Hull, Britain’s number 1 woman’s golfer. Definitely a different lifestyle from what I’m used to. I went from being a fighter, a cash machine robber and a debt collector to sitting in the Royal box at Wimbledon. I rubbed shoulders with the likes of David Beckham, Richard Branson and Cliff Richard to name but a few. For me, life changed 100%. I guess even the rich and famous like a bad boy.

Jason: Going back to your (convicted) crime of not scamming, strimming or hacking a cashpoint Machine- you took the whole thing!

Ozzie: Yeah!

Jason: You took the whole thing!

Ozzie: (Laughing) Well, yeah!

Jason: You took the whole f*cking cashpoint machine!

Ozzie: We didn’t see the point leaving any of it there. We pulled them out with diggers and took them away with us to open-up and see what surprises we could find. It was a bit like Christmas really. We could take a cash machine in under a minute and we’d be on our way with it. Like Santa Clause, but instead we got the loot not the kids.

Jason: You obviously have to be fearless in many respects to take on a bank with regard to crime - are there any other levels of crime that you’d consider as ‘ballsy’?

Ozzie: To be fair, cash machines become normal. At the time it (cash machines) actually one of my favourites. There was a lot of fun in that type of crime. What I’d class as ballsy, is debt collecting. There’s the excitement when you’re venturing into the unknown. You’d never know what you could be walking into to. I used to love rolling up and seeing their reactions. You could read their minds just by the expressions on their faces. They’d see this fast talking, smiling gypsy pull up and you’s see the colour come out of their faces. It was a night and day expression. I fucking loved it! I’m what’s known as a bully’s bully - I loved it, not because I’m a mean or spiteful person, but you’ll find a lot of the times the people who don’t pay are bullies who take off people who are trying hard to progress in life. They all think they’re hardmen. So, when I come to take back what they owe and wasn’t theirs to begin with, it really does put a smile on my face.

Jason: Name another action or interest that gives as much of a ‘buzz’ as crime?

Ozzie: I get a buzz from fighting. I think it’s down to the fact that’s what I've been brought up to and identify with. There’s something very humbling about fighting. It really doesn’t matter to me whether it’s cage fighting, boxing or bare knuckle – I’ve done it all. I love and relish on the thought of two men going at it and after showing respect. Shaking each other’s hands and being gentlemanly about the whole thing. It’s us as human going back to basics, accepting we’re men and being challenged and willing to fight for what we believe in. It helps preserve our natural instincts and an order.

Jason: Debt collecting - how did you get into this?

Jason: The hardest debt you ever collected and tough customers?

Ozzie: I got into debt collecting and protection around the same time, being they’re basically the same thing. It’s a funny story really. A few years ago, I was in a club and my Asian friend who’s like 22 stone, he got into it with the owner of the club. It was him (club owner) was pushing his ego and attitude. You know the type, big club, deep pockets, probably a small cock and no brain.

So, he’s with all his bouncers and one off the crowd pulled out a knife. I don’t care who you are, but if you want a fight, good and so be it! But you pull a knife and you’re a coward and not a man.

Most fighting men and I men real men who can have a fight despise knives and those that have to rely on them to compensate for their lack of balls. So, silly bollocks has pulled a knife, one thing led to another and he feels he can point the knife in my direction. I’d already tried to defuse the situation by reaching into my own pockets and offering to buy a round of drinks - I’ll not have anyone say I’m not a gentleman. If I can buy a round of drinks and it stops unnecessary fighting or someone being hurt, then that’s me. The same loudmouth felt by calling me out and insulting me with, “I know you, you’re Ozzie f*cking smith, people kiss your arse. I don’t kiss anyone’s arse and I’ll show you” Why he thought this would solve the issue is beyond me. But instead it sealed his own fate and he learnt very quickly that hiding behind bouncers and brandishing a weapon was the wrong thing to do. What started with one left hook then become an investment on my part two ambulances, broken jaws, cracked eye sockets and a few other injuries. I did tell him, and I offered to be a gentleman. Shame really, but some people just can’t help themselves. The funny part about it all, when he got better, he actually asked me if I’d look after him. I guess actions do speak louder than words, eh! The debt collecting started from that incident. The name sprang from that incident too. If you need anything collected, call “Ozzie f*cking Smith” Like I said, after he recovered from his injuries, he asked if I’d look after him and then boom, from there debt collecting and protection started - if you needed anything done, get “Ozzie F*cking Smith”

Jason: what happens when they say, “no?”

Ozzie: What happens when they say no? Well truth is, no one has ever said no! It’s like a reputable company, you go to them because you want results. I’m a sure thing. If I’m paid to do a job, you get value for money and the money you’re owed - less my commission of course! People on the rare occasion have tried and tested me, but I get what I came for. They might not look the same or be happy when I leave, but it’s business. If you can’t or have no intention of paying the money, don’t borrow it. I will get it - fact!

Ozzie: The hardest debt was probably in Manchester. It wasn’t silly money either. It was for £250,000. People have started wars over half that amount. So, I go up to Manchester to collect and find there’s this firm waiting for me. A so-called big firm of bully boys. Their efforts of calling in reinforcements was wasted. Their energy and silly games didn’t pay off like they’d hoped or thought. We even let one go as he thought he’d be calling in the cavalry. Those calls went unanswered, ignored and no one came - the so-called bully boys didn’t account for the fact I collect. Two hours later, I came back to the client with every penny. I earned good that day.

SAVING SOHO - GHQ Saving Soho.

For many, the loss of the original stores and entertainment venues isn’t just another Soho update or out with the old and in with the new, it's by a lot of the local’s interpretation, “making way for soulless and yuppie gentrified one-class type businesses.”

With the (obvious) gradual change in central London, where development — or gentrification — is irrevocably changing the landscape, many feel the rustic and traditional style of stores and businesses that made the area unique and ‘what Soho is all about’, are being forced to move, largely close and make way for chain-stores and boutiques.

Back in 2014, an open letter was said to have been sent, asking London mayor Boris Johnson to help preserve Soho's identity. The same letter had big support too - signed by Benedict Cumberbatch and The Who's Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend among others including Stephen Fry, who also tweeted his support. It was written by Tim Arnold, a singer and songwriter who's leading a Save Soho campaign with the aim of "keeping Soho inclusive, not exclusive."

By Jason Allday A cabaret performer, Abigail O’Neill, whose career once existed within a now closed club, gave an interview talking about a popular club she once performed at (madame Jo Jo’s), - “Madame JoJo’s was a staple within the arts and live performance world.”

Madame Jo Jo’s once had a long and illustrious history. It was said to be a former gangster favourite in Soho’s post-war red-light district, it was once bought and owned by infamous porn baron Paul Raymond and quickly became the home of cabaret, burlesque and drag performances.

. It’s been a common and open discussion within many of the local community since the developments started happening, many seen within the last two decades. Many people feel that the closure of the clubs and shops will take away a little part of Soho's soul, deleting history forever. A local veteran club promoter told BBC Radio London, “It’s not right that people should be able to run roughshod over it and destroy and demolish these places. These are our places. They might own the lease but it’s not their place — it’s our place.”

Another local business owner said, “It’s more than a lot of people can either understand or appreciate! History? That’s an understatement. Did you know that back in 1847 Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels earnestly debated the failings of capitalism in rooms above a pub at 20 Great Windmill Street, in Soho?” Try having a conversation on that level of history or cultural impact in a local fucking gentrified coffee shop!”

At the turn of the 20th century it was full of hardworking European immigrants; just before the first world war, one writer remarked that “when the respectable Londoner wants to feel ‘devilish’ they go to Soho”. Soho was an area that proudly displayed pretty Georgian houses and dark ambient side streets. Soho resisted development in the 1970s, and it remained a red-light district: around 30-40 flats are still used for prostitution, but what Soho had in terms of its more ‘gritty’ parts of history, it boasted some of the best independent film and television companies, clustering above family owned bars and restaurants.

Vince Vaughn is an actor who was once described in an online article as, “An actor whose strong features and sinewy 6'4" physique appear to have been chiseled from a slab of testosterone, Vince Vaughn is Hollywood's closest human approximation of a Chevy pick-up.” Vincent Anthony Vaughn was born on March 28, 1970, and listed as an American actor, producer, screenwriter, and comedian.

Vaughn’s first hit (ignoring his prior tv commercial) was the 1996 Swingers.

Directed by Doug Liman, the comedy stars Vaughn and close friend, Favreau (who also co-wrote the script) as two amiable, Rat Pack-obsessed, "so money" bachelors prowling the streets and bars of L.A. for "beautiful babies" and the occasional job opportunity .

Vince has appeared in a number of films in the 1990s, including the sports film Rudy the The Lost World: Jurassic Park , the thriller Return to Paradise and the remake of psychological thriller Psycho.

Other than his dramatic role in The Cell and Domestic Disturbance in the 2000’s it’s interesting that Vaughn has acted primarily in comedies, including Old School, DodgeBall: A True Underdog Story, Wedding Crashers, The Break-Up, Fred Claus and Four Christmases.

This year, it was noted that with the current market of video on demand debuts, is one that is still a market that has the potential of great return. One such film title that gained some credible attention was actor Clark Duke’s screenwriting/directing debut, ‘Arkansas’. This was a film about two young men trying to navigate the criminal underground. An underground that was the perfect place for Vince Vaughn to show off his acting abilities and bring an added depth to the film at hand.

As for what Vaughn may have in store for his fans with the upcoming body-swapper film, little is said to be known about the project as of yet. According to Deadline, the film will follow a young woman (played by Blockers breakout Kathryn Newton) who, after swapping bodies with a psychotic serial killer, has 24 hours to reverse the curse before it becomes permanent. We do know that Vaughn is portraying the psycho killer in the project, meaning he'll also have to embody some form of the young woman as well.

There’s no denying though, since Swingers' debut, Vince Vaughn has dabbled as often in big blockbuster films, as some not so big Hollywood budget productions – a credit to Vaughn’s willingness to venture into waters unknown and uncharted. Vaughn's desire not to be pigeonholed, we believe, has contributed to him to be one of the more flexible performers in todays’ film industry. He's undoubtably brought a level of to the craft we all know and appreciate as an actor.

Cartoons aren’t just for kids The popularity, as seen within mainstream pop culture, “The Simpsons,” “South Park” and “Family Guy” defied the common perception that cartoons are just for kids; as seen with the shows high level of success and the simple fact of the long-running animated series continued presence. It can, as it’s been suggested in several favourable tabloid publications, that a large part of that success can be attributed to the maturity of the audience – “ some of the best American animated shows of recent years have featured cultural references and subject matter best appreciated by viewers who’ve lived long enough to get the jokes” and are “able to understand the emotions and experiences the series’ creators are exploring.”

Politics. Race. Economics. Religion. War. Genocide. These are typically topics some adults often feel a level of discomfort when talking about. But there is (thankfully) a platform and none better than explicit cartoons like Bojack Horseman, Rick and Morty, and Archer, who encapsulate that statement, as all are aimed almost exclusively at adults and can easily employ any subject matter, be it deemed too ‘risqué’ or ‘sensitive’, adult cartoons can allow a divide and escape from what is deemed ‘normal’ and to be treated simply as entertainment (as what type of person would identify or mimic a yellow coloured character eating doughnuts!)

Creation Stories Creation Stories. -The Story and History of a Music Icon

Creation Stories tells the unforgettable tale of infamous Creation Records label head Alan McGee; and of how one written-off young Glaswegian upstart rose to irrevocably change the face of British culture.

The Creation founder’s 2013 autobiography, Creation Stories – Riots, Raves and Running a Record Label, has been adapted for the Irvine Welsh-penned film, which was executive produced by Danny Boyle (Trainspotting) and directed by Nick Moran (Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels).

The beginning, as some may know, is said to have included near bankruptcy, pills, and thrills, the excess and ultimately – the breakdowns. From leaving school at sixteen to setting up the Living Room club in London, showcasing emerging indie bands, from managing The Jesus and Mary Chain to co-founding Creation at 23, Creation Stories is going to be one epic journey caught on film.

It was once written that Alan embraced acid house, then decamped to Manchester hanging out at the legendary Hacienda, and ultimately taking the Creation label into the big time with Primal Scream. His known drug-induced breakdown was said by some to be life changing, but thankfully climbing back to sobriety, he went on to champion Oasis‘ rise – giving the world one of the biggest bands of our time.

In a recent interview, McGee said: “It’s literally getting finished. They’re just trying to work out how to release it. I want them to just bang it online. Get it on Netflix, Amazon Prime or Sky, because who’s going to the fucking cinema now?”

CREATION STORIES With some of Creation’s biggest artists seen alongside Oasis and Primal Scream in the film, McGee commented, “It’s wonderful that Television Personalities are in it. Mel Raido is genius playing Ed Ball from the Personalities: like Ed, he really is cool as fuck.” Reporting from last summer, Danny Boyle is said to have commented this is a “casting heaven.”

When asked how he prepared for his role as McGee, Ewan Bremner commented, “I tried to absorb as much as possible in the time that was available to me once I knew that the film was happening.”

Creation Stories is scripted by Irvine Welsh, author of Trainspotting, and produced by director Danny Boyle, Creation Stories co-stars Steven Berkoff as the late occultist Aleister Crowley.

GHQ Your Word Is Your Bond!

If a man doesn't match his words with his actions, he is not a man, but a boy who likes to talk.

We are all aware of the cliche, ''Clothes maketh the man?'' and readers drawn to this magazine would undoubtedly agree. However, I would wager, its a mans words, and not the clothes that truly defines him.

Our word is all we have. Each time we say one thing and do another, we send a compelling message to the external world and more importantly, ourselves; We don't value our time, and neither yours.

And lest we forget, the world takes it cue from how we treat ourselves, and hence treats us accordingly.

Meaning, we will attract to us those who mirror and align our own inability to uphold what we say with what we do.

I want you to look over the last 24hours and notice, with absolute congruency, how many things did you not do that you said you would, regardless of how small or insignificant you believe it to be.

Now extend that to your entire week? From what you ate, working out, promises made to yourself and any number of others? The meetings you arranged, or the phone calls you vowed to make, including, ''I'm busy right now, but I'll call you later.''

Now, look at how many times you did the same in the last month? Beginning to get the picture?

Let me ask you a question. Do you think successful people are prone to upholding their word? The answer is, of course, rhetorical, it is a vast affirmative, yes!!!

In my world, it's not OK to break your word to yourself and others barring medical or other emergencies that take precedent.

When you willfully break your word, what message are you articulating? '' I can't be trusted, and my levels of self-esteem and selflove are low'' On the contrary, adults with high levels of integrity and self-esteem take their word very seriously.

When I work with any client, the first thing I address is the lack of personal congruency.

In fact, I weed out those who I even consider working with by the force of their intention to change and commit to the in-depth process and journey of inner transformation that I promise a client.

When you say one thing and do another, you are operating from a place of convenience, not commitment, and without complete accountability, you can forget about transformation.

Let me ask you an important question. ''How badly do you want it?�

To change aspects of your character that have and continue to cause you emotional turmoil?

What price do you put on ''peace of mind?''

Your mind is creating your misery and suffering, yet until you realise, your unconscious patterns will continue to repeat themselves.

Remember, we are forever feeling the nature of our thinking, meaning the quality of our lives is directly correlated with the quality of our thoughts.

It is never the events, circumstances or other people that causes joy or pain, but the meaning we apply to those things.

So my question to you is this, ''What are your lowest standards you are willing to tolerate?'' of yourself and others.

Stop negotiating with your inner saboteurs and your own bullshit and do something about it, and that starts by upholding your word.

If you say a thing, then do that bloody thing!!!

Extraordinary people have extraordinary levels of selfintegrity. From top athletes to top actors, and those making a real difference on this planet all share this non-negotiable trait.

ENGLAND FROM RUSSIA WITH LUCK A few issues back I mentioned a lad I used to lodge with Paul C. He was a year younger than me and his older brother was based out in Goa, India. Paul was a dedicated baker. Up and out of the house by 3.30am every morning. He wasn’t really a drinker, preferring a good smoke. During the summer of 1990, he had saved up enough to go over to India for six months and stay with his brother. All seemed straightforward enough and he was buzzing like mad in the weeks leading up to his departure. I knew I was going to miss him being about the place. But not as much as what happened after we bid our farewells at Heathrow Airport.

You see, unfortunately for me, Paul’s room was taken by a nondescript bore who was into Terry Prachett novels. He did my fucking head in. Paul was promised that when he returned he could have a makeshift room in the loft while he sorted out a) getting his old job back b) get a new one c) find a new home. The Terry Prachett bore had already made it known before Paul’s return he was going nowhere, even though I had upped my unpleasantness towards him.

I couldn’t wait for Paul to return, all tanned, chilled and with many stories to tell. His brother had hatched a plan for Paul to bring back some strong hashish, pellets wrapped tight with cellophane. I believe he swallowed about 100 pellets.

The return flight from Goa stopped at Moscow to refuel. About 20 minutes from landing Paul suddenly felt the pellets shoot from his gut to his chest. He made a dash for the toilets and threw up about 40 pellets. He said he was amazed the whole lot didn’t exit. Anyway he was trying to swallow them all back down, while an air steward was banging on the door saying he must return to his seat as the plane was about to land. There were still about 20 in the basin to swallow. Somehow he got them necked, composed himself and took his seat. All he thought he had to do was sort himself out in the airport toilets. Maybe force himself to throw up a few into the toilet, let his gut settle and swallow them back down by using flushing toilet water as drinking water.

But when exiting the plane there was a line of about 60 Russian soldiers, all armed in a line and the passengers had to disembark and stand on the runway tarmac facing these soldiers while the plane refuelled.

It was minus 10 degrees, Paul’s gut was a tumbler about to hit full spin and here he was face to face with armed young Russian soldiers, about his age, with him ready to blast out 50 odd pellets machine gun style into their emotionless faces.

He could feel the pellets rising, the urge to vomit. The refuelling took a fucking lifetime. Maybe it was the cold that gave him a distraction as he was inappropriately dressed and his focus was redirected away from vomiting and to keep himself warm. All that was going through his mind was the film, Midnight Express. They were still being guarded on the tarmac when he began to experience the sensation of the pellets on the move again. It was as if one slight movement and out they’d come.

Even when instructed to return to the plane, he was terrified that any slight movement would be the trigger a volcanic eruption. But he got away with it, somehow got onto the plane and 20 minutes into the flight, in the toilet, he threw up another batch of pellets and spent even longer getting them back down, using his palms as a cup to drink out of.

Again there was a knock on the door, many voices complaining. ‘I have got the shits mate, okay? What can I do?’ he explained.

They left him alone, which gave him enough time to compose himself, swallow the pellets, get his breathing steady and his mind strong, ‘Come on,’ he was telling himself, ‘If I can get through that tarmac nightmare, I can get through anything.’

Back home he said to me, ‘It was actually worse than that film Midnight Express because I was in real time.’

I had two large bath towels on my bed and we were drying the pellets with hand towels after he’d thrown them all up in the bathroom sink. How the fuck did he swallow all that and get them back home? Absolutely crazy. But an admirable achievement by anyone’s standards. The only downside I suppose, was how I noticed quite a few had fallen onto my bedroom floor, and I did feel a bit guilty at the time about not telling him, as I kicked them carefully out of view and under my bed. But then again, I was part of the massive clean up operation and no one works for free.

Glasvegas – It’s Been A While After seven years of work, the Galsvegas’s album, ‘Godspeed’, is said to have finally begun to come together. Reports also suggest it’s now scheduled for release early next year (April 2021). The first single release, ‘Keep Me A Space’, helps remind listeners of the rich and authentic sound, that has long allowed the group that gritty, working-class identity; some have said also gives a level of authenticity to the groups original fresh-sound and look.

It’s been a while. A recap and catchup of Glasvegas.

Glasvegas was the debut studio album by the Scottish indie rock band Glasvegas, first released in the UK on 8 September 2008 by Columbia Records. The album was produced by lead singer James Allan and Rich Costey. In a recent interview, the group was asked on how the 2018 comeback shows went?

James Allan - “It was brilliant. It was the first time we’d played the album from start to finish. Even though you play the songs a lot over the years. they’re like the ocean – you never really touch the bottom. The way you view yourself, the way you view the songs that you wrote, the picture changes in time, you can feel one thing about it and that alters in time so there’s a different angle, a different perspective. It was a very positive experience…there’s an element of complete surprise that you’re there with an audience of people listening. We feel quite lucky to have a bunch of humans out there who are quite invested in it after that time.”

GLASVEGAS GHQ It had been a while since their last album, and after the 2018 shows, James was also asked if he felt the tour was any inspiration for completing the next project, “I’d like to say yeah, but it didn’t. This is the first album I’ve engineered, recorded and produced. So, it was a bit like learning a new language, and trying to figure out how you want to speak that language as well, put your voice to it. That took a lot longer than I’d have thought but I’m quite oblivious to my limits and quite stupid like that.

I’ve always been a dreamer. The band and management they’ve always been supportive but I’m sure there’s times where they’re like ‘what the fuck’s going on here?”

Because it happened all them years ago maybe you can’t touch it, you can’t feel a memory, it’s not tangible, but that’s not to say that doesn’t last forever because that’s maybe floating somewhere.

All rooms include upgraded bathroom facilities, beautiful soft furnishings and subtle references to the Libertines and their lyrics are featured throughout. The Rooms: Apple Beats have generously equipped each room with a sound System. The penthouse was coordinated by the famous print design house Anna Hayman (famous for their luxury velvet fabrics). The rooms were overseen by Rhiannon Sussex a creator of bespoke interiors, infused with a boldly elegant and glamorous aesthetic with an expertly curated mix of vintage and contemporary objects. All beds are by Nimbus, allowing guests to purchase their mattress to replicate their stay once they return home.

The Restaurant: the kitchen offers three individually curated menus including a unique fine dining experience, overseen by renowned chef Joe Hill who has been head chef for some of the biggest names in the industry - Gordon Ramsay, Tom Aikens and Hamyard Hotel. Joe utilises local ingredients to create sexy, considered and irresistible menus.

Arcady Coffee House: situated in the upstairs bar, serves its own Libertines house blend, coffee and brunch seven says a week until 4pm. It was only just recently that legendry actor Clint Eastwood turned 90 and as per an insider, is said to be feeling grateful, as he enters into a new decade of his life. Known for his epic role in the tv series 'Rawhide' to 'Gran Torino', with 90 years and 71 of those acting, 50 of them producing and 41 directing credits to his name, there isn’t a single movie fan alive that couldn’t have heard or have seen a film with the iconic actor. Per IMDb, Eastwood appeared in all 217 episodes of the series, which ran from 1959 to 1965. It was said in one interview, that, “Clint Eastwood is probably the most surprised of all to be where he is today - at the top. Throughout his life and career, he has become, one of the greatest artists of American cinema.”

CLINT AT 90 It's worth noting that a common reply given by many a person, who’s been granted the luxury and opportunity to sit and speak with Mr. Eastwood, of his ability and sharpness when answering questions. A testament and compliment to the man he is and the person conducting the interview – it was said and quoted in one such interview, “He answers the questions thrown up by his human and creative adventure. With characteristic simplicity, humour and humility…..”

Clint Eastwood was born May 31, 1930 in San Francisco, the son of Clinton Eastwood Sr., a manufacturing executive for Georgia-Pacific Corporation, and Ruth Wood, a housewife turned IBM operator. Some accounts have stated that he had a comfortable, middle-class upbringing in nearby Piedmont. At school Clint took interest in music and mechanics, but was an otherwise bored student; this resulted in being held back a grade.

CLINT EASTWOOD Rawhide

It was a time for many that once witnessed an era of Hollywood screen legends, that are sadly no longer with us, but there was something almost mythical and a person we all become to know as Mr. Clint Eastwood, who would stand and take whatever life threw at him. Clint Eastwood was drafted during the Korean War and stationed in California. Following his discharge from the army in 1953, Eastwood sought more from life and pursued a career on the big-screen. He moved to Hollywood, that resulted in a screen test with Universal in 1954 - that netted him a 40-week contract, but, after one renewal and a series of bit parts in such movies as Tarantula (1955) and Revenge of the Creature (1955), he was dropped. He got his big break in 1959 - that role allowed a huge audience, their first view of the once rowdy cattle driver who become a multi-generational, likeable and respected star. That character was of course Rowdy Yates, an assistant to a cattle drive trail. Back then, Eastwood's screen character was seen by his fans as a young and reckless, sometimes testy person, this resulted in the cattle boss, played by the late Eric Flemming to keep an ever-watching close eye on him.

Eastwood then achieved international stardom during this same period when he played The Man with No Name—a fearless gunfighter whose stoicism masks his brutality—in three Italian westerns (popularly known as “spaghetti westerns”) directed by Sergio Leone. In 1967 the three films played in the United States and were immediate commercial successes, establishing Eastwood as a box-office star.

Eastwood also worked with Don Siegel on the popular police story Coogan’s Bluff; it was Siegel who taught him most of what he needed to know about directing, a debt who Eastwood later on often acknowledged. Eastwood also work with the same director on the western, ‘Two Mules for Sister Sara’, the psychological Civil War drama, ‘The Beguiled’, and the prison-break film, ‘Escape from Alcatraz’. Of course, it’s an undisputed Hollywood fact that their best-known collaboration was Dirty Harry, in which Eastwood first portrayed the ruthlessly effective police inspector Harry Callahan.

John Wayne?

Heartbreak Ridge in the 1980’s, was for many war- movie buffs an enjoyable drama about an ageing marine sergeant, played by Eastwood, on the verge of retirement, whose tough approach gets a group of raw recruits into shape. Some have speculated this role would have been ideal and suited for the late John Wayne. But, there’s no question, Clint pulled it off and played the part well.

In addition to directing, Eastwood has also directed films in which he did not appear, such as the mystery drama, ‘Mystic River’ and the war film, ‘Letters from Iwo Jima,’ for which he received Academy Award nominations, the drama, ‘Changeling’, and the biographical sports drama, ‘Invictus’. The war drama biopic, ‘American Sniper,’ set box-office records for the largest January release ever and was also the largest opening ever for an Eastwood film.

GHQ Ever Lasting Since his first appearance and throughout his film career, the 1990’s saw some amazing work from the ageless actor, director and Hollywood legend. There simply isn’t enough paper or space to ever give him his credit or deserving recognition.

Whether you’d credit his iconic acting and countless laughs and on-screen antics with his co-star, Clyde in, ‘Any Which But Loose’ and follow-up, ‘Any Which Way You Can’ or his Academy Award nominated adaptation of a Navy SEAL sniper’s memoir, ‘American Sniper’ in 2014, there’s no limits on either this man’s continuing place in Film-making history or amongst the greats of cinema.

Allan McGee. “Yeah, well the record label back in the ’80s and ’90s was all about rock and roll,” he says. “It was about living the life as mentally as you could and having the balls to do it – fuck the consequences and we all did suffer the consequences at some point.” - Alan McGee

Alan McGee needs little introduction. Originally a singer and guitarist with the Laughing Apple and then Biff Bang Pow!, he founded Creation Records and met early success with the Jesus and Mary Chain, the House of Love and Primal Scream.

Listed as a Scottish businessman and music industry executive, the legendary Creation founder, worked with My Bloody Valentine, Ride and Primal Scream before discovering Oasis and managing The Libertines.

For a man who supposedly rubs people up the wrong way, McGee is known most of all for his loyalty. You’ll undoubtedly read a lot on Alan, much like many credible music men, with mainstreams press’s impressions being, if they didn’t get the answers or story they wanted, they’ll simply make it up.

There’s a lot to be learned from an actual conversation and experiance when talking with those that have (typically) been given bad press, and non truer than when you spend time with Alan McGee - he has an indefinable charm and you can’t help but be drawn to him. Alan has an undeniable witty and fantastic way of telling a story, and not to mention he’s a man responsible for creating the sounds of a whole generation.

How would you describe yourself?

“I’m just a record label owner, who loves music.

There’s a lot of information out there on me that isn’t true and I have no idea where they get it from. I’ve been a D.J, actor played in a band - I’ve done a lot of things, but again I’m just a businessman and a record label owner who just loves music. To be fair though, compared to most, I’ve probably got it right more times than I ever got it wrong. I come from fuck all in Glasgow, I went to comprehensive school, my mum was a shop assistant and my father was a panel beater. If I didn’t end up doing music, what would I have ended up doing?”

It goes without question, you were a direct impact on British music during the late '80s and '90s, was it down to a love of the music that wasn’t getting coverage, or was there something else?

“I was a fanzine guy, and like a lot of people in the early 80’s had a fanzine. I had my own called Communication Blur, but what I didn’t know at the time was, I was a record company manager-type guy.

I was just talking about the type of music and bands I liked, (in the fanzine) then a club and then I started putting records out. No one now taught me anything I was already doing and within a year and a half of me putting music out there, I was successful - I’ve never really stopped doing it. It was combination of being a really hardworking guy, plus not being exceptionally great (at what I was doing), but then not shit at it either! So, going out of the fanzine world, into putting out music that was in the top 50 (music charts). A lot of people have to work their way up in the music business, I entered the music business and got a hit right off the bat with The Jesus and Mary Chain.”

When a band from Manchester fronted by a pair of brothers forced their way on-stage at a gig in Glasgow attended by yourself, you was impressed by their attitude, you then signed Oasis on the spot, resulting in a partnership that would launch both the band and the label into previously unimaginable success. Did you see yourself in Oasis’s portrayed image being of a somewhat anti authority nature?

“I’m a quiet person, Oasis are a loud band, but I really like that type of loudness. I think I’m like Noel in that we’re both ‘quiet’. Obviously, I’ve met Liam a lot, but I know Noel really well. What it really is we’re all loyal; that’s what it comes down to and what we’re all about. When I signed the Gallagher brothers, I didn’t honestly know they were going to be superstars and sell me 65 million records. At the time, I saw them as a good band and I saw them as a potential gold, maybe two gold albums. I knew they were a good band when I signed them, saw the potential in them and hoped I could establish them around other good bands of the time.”

Fair to say you’re an ‘independent’ music entrepreneur?

“My record label Creation 23 - it’s just me. I just put the records out myself. I hire in the P.R company. I get the bands in the studio, or the band deliver me the music and I then chose the ‘pluggers’ and the P.R company. I’ve always been an ‘independent’. I know I’ve sold millions of records for large companies, but It’s always been an ‘indie’ thing that I do.”

Speaking about your autobiography Creation Stories to The Guardian, it’ was reported that you said that out of all the bands he worked with – from The Jesus And Mary Chain to Oasis, Primal Scream and My Bloody Valentine, The Libertines were the toughest. If I was to ask you who is the craziest band you’ve ever managed?

“The Libertines!”

What band truly encapsulates the Punk genre?

“The Clockworks, they’re really punk. I think it was because they’d just really do anything. A brilliant band - even now still sound like the early punk bands. Really good. But saying that, I’d have to say Primal Scream for their attitude. They had a great punk way of doing things However it works, we don’t care as long as it works’ kind of attitude, it doesn’t matter how it works, let’s just make it work. A really good punk attitude.”

David Bowie - as an artist and an inspiration.

“Personally, for me he was my main man. David Bowie, he was the guy for me, man! I got into him when I was about 11 years old and I’ve never moved off that. Absolute Beginners, Hallo Space Boy and I’m Afraid of Americans - even now when I’m going through his later albums, such great fucking tracks! 1969 -1982, he never made a bad record. Some incredible records.

People got Bowie, post ’82 he gave us a classic on each album.“

The Ramones, The Clash and The Sex Pistols - who would you liked to have managed?

“The Sex Pistols! I always wanted to be Malcolm McLaren, and I think it’s because of Malcom I wanted to be a manager. The Ramones were incredible as well, absolute genius. The former Sex Pistols manager was a punk-rock visionary and true inspiration.”

In an earlier interview, you gave credit to Malcolm.

“Without Malcolm McLaren, I don’t think I’d have never even have got out of Glasgow. He was absolutely instrumental in creating punk rock and was the reason people like me, Bobby Gillespie and Noel Gallagher ever got into music.”

Malcolm was ahead of his time.

“I became friends with him in 1996 when I did a Punch interview. He was an absolute visionary.

Malcolm was the opposite of any major-label boss over many decades previous. He was a genius and an absolute visionary. Tony Wilson was always my big hero, and Andrew Loog Oldham is still the don. But Malcolm McLaren was always the cleverest.”

With modern technology comes advancements. Streaming radio – an important factor?

“You have to have sources like streaming radio. I’m a streaming radio guy. Everyone is doing their own thing. I do my own streaming radio show and it doesn’t matter if you have 500 or 1/2 million listeners. Streaming radio can make a lot of people happy. You’re involved and doing something you enjoy.”

The football casual - is it true you were once voted most fashionable, best trendsetter record label owner?

“How that story came about was I was voted the most stylish record label owner in the world.

I’m friends with the clothes designer Paul Smith, he gave me a bunch of suits, so when people saw me, I was always in a Paul Smith suit and that was pretty much the entire 90’s, me in a Paul Smith suit. Anyway, I was down in London visiting 10 Downing St and I’d be clocked again wearing a Paul Smith suit and a pair of Adidas trainers. Then I get an I invitation in the post also telling me I’d been awarded the world’s most stylish in the world for 1997. I thought it was a joke at first as I’m the most un-stylish man in the world. So, it just proves you can just buy your way in.”

A Chat With Irvine Welsh - His Initial Start And Cult Stardom Irvine Welsh was born in the great city of Edinburgh, Scotland (quote). An avid football fan, who always identifies (very humbly) with his working-class background. Irvine, like most, left Ainslie Park Secondary School when he was sixteen. His yearning and wish to take-in what the world had to offer was a calling, I’d say, was there from a young age. He had various jobs, but much like his school years, there was more to life and what was on offer than the confines and restrictions that both school and a job (at this stage of his life) could satisfy his growing mind. Some could suggest, Irvine didn’t really like work anymore than he did school.

London was his calling in the late seventies. Here it is said he tried to catch up on some of the education he’d missed on while daydreaming and planning his life about more interesting things at hand. And let’s be honest, when you’re on the verge of greatness, and at that stage of the young trainspotting genius’s life, who has time to study with those empty fruitless days of post-Victorian age-old schooling methods? Especially when you’re planning to make an impression on the world!

Irvine undoubtably enjoyed the London punk scene. The jobs got better, and he gained some income whilst working on the ‘property ladder’. Welsh eventually returned to Edinburgh where he worked for the city council in the housing department. Being the smart cookie that he is, Irvine earned himself an MBA at Heriot Watt University.

Invigorated and drawn into the rave scene, Irvine started to write, and f*ck me did he! This eventually led to a meeting to some pivotal people - Kevin Williamson, Duncan McLean, Barry Graham, Alan Warner, Paul Reekie and Rodney Relax. Their ‘crossing-paths’, would lead to the next step in his life.

Welsh did a draft after going through some old diaries. This transformed into what would become Trainspotting. Welsh published parts this from 1991 onwards in DOG, the West Coast Magazine, and New Writing Scotland. Duncan McLean published parts of the novel in two Clocktower pamphlets, A Parcel of Rogues and Past Tense: Four Stories from a Novel.

A member of Duncan McLean’s Muirhouse writers’ group, is said to have published sections of Trainspotting in the literary magazine, Rebel Inc. Duncan McLean recommended Welsh to Robin Robertson, who was then editorial director of Secker & Warburg, who decided to publish Trainspotting. When Trainspotting was (deservingly) published in 1993 Irvine Welsh instantly shot to fame. According to Lord Gowrie, the chairman of the panel, the novel was rejected for the Booker Prize shortlist after offending two female judges. Despite an unease from the over sensitive and always critical establishment, Trainspotting received as many good reviews as ones who would never be ready or have an understanding of a classic and timeless piece of writing. Trainspotting 2, could there ever be a T3? “ I once was asked that in an interview, but no. I don’t believe it would have the collective bottle”

The first was a timeless classic. Even being conservative in my view, the second was a really good follow-up. I know a lot of people would like to see the chance of a third film. Such classic characters.

“When you think about The Godfather or Terminator, nobody ever thinks about the third film. To do a holy trinity and get a third one right is a massive challenge. I honestly can’t think of a third film that is successful.

That’s a fair comment; why ruin a good thing, or two!

“I think we should quit while we are ahead. I don’t know if we have the bottle collectively. I think it is unlikely.”

Trainspotting is fast approaching 30 years. Did you at any stage think it would be this impactful, and for so long?

“No, not really. The initial buzz and excitement it generated was among a certain section of the London cultural cognoscenti - the ex-punk crowd. I think they got it immediately. Mainly because of the subject matter - hard drugs. I thought it would become a cult book. Other people have called it generation-defining. It’s strange when you think about it, Trainspotting has taken on such a life of its own. When I see it on a shelf in a bookshop, it almost feels like someone else wrote it.

The interior design of the all-new Mercedes S-Class has been teased ahead of the car’s full reveal early in September. Judging by these new teasers, the seventh-generation of the brand’s flagship saloon looks set to mark a radical departure from its predecessor in terms of both design and tech.

Inspiration for the new cabin has been taken from upmarket home interior design and the world of luxury yachts - steps which have contributed to what Mercedes calls a “lounge-type ambience”. MAGIC MOD The Magic Mod with GHQ The first documented form of magic was in 2700 B.C. - The reputed first known performance of a conjuring effect (balls) by the magician Dedi in ancient Egypt.

Magic remains a great form of entertainment. It mystifies people all over the world and it remains as cultivating as when it first entertained the halls if kings and queens of past. You’ve only got to look at the popularity of films and TV.

So, you might ask, is the magic mod the same as when it was suggested the famous 1960s rock band, Led Zeppelin, were deeply immersed in the occult during their time on the charts and like many others who dabbled in the dark arts? Or is it something comparable to the insanely popular Harry Potter film series?

GHQ. So, who is The Magic Mod and where did it all start?

T.M.M I first got into magic when I was about 6 years old. My parents gave me a Paul Daniels magic set. I still say to this day, that when I lifted the lid off that box, that was the magical moment that changed my life and has led me to achieve so many of my dreams.

GHQ. You ended up on tour with some world-famous rock n roll bands. How did that come about?

T.M.M. I got to know Carl (Barat) as a friend through his DJ sets, he’d been an admirer of my magic. He called me and said that he would love it if I would come on tour with them (The Libertines), it was an offer I couldn’t refuse! Still to this day I thank them so much for having faith in me. I really do think that me going on tour with them gave me the confidence to perform in-front of thousands on stage. That goes for Mr. Paul Weller too, he put his trust in me first and gave me a lot of life changing advice.

GHQ. I’ve been told you’re also a bit a style icon.

T.M.M. Obviously, the mod subculture is something that I base my image on and you’ve got some fantastic people, like Paul Weller, who, in my opinion is the best dressed person in the universe. Liam’s a close third after me. I have great contacts with a few great clothing brands too, so I’m always looking class. Big love to Luke clothing and Pretty Green.

GHQ. There’s a lot of great entertainers of past. Any that you’d consider influential?

T.M.M. My heroes of magic are David Blaine and Harry Lorayne and of course Paul Daniels. I still to this day believe Paul is the best magician ever. I used to watch his shows all the time, learning the tricks he used to do. I look him and always will as my hero in magic hands down

GHQ. What magic trick would you consider to be the ultimate form of magic, who and why would you entertain with that act?

T.M.M. I saw this dove trick performed by a magician called Lace Burton and it absolutely blew me away. I really have no idea how he done it and the skill Involved is absolutely incredible.

GHQ. Your last curtain-call. If and when you do you last show (not wishing you away) what would you envision to be your final, once in a lifetime, earth shattering memorable act to be?

T.M.M. To be honest, I never want to stop performing magic and as mad as it sounds, I would rather die on the stage doing what I love then ever give up.

Citizens placed under house arrest if they develop a cough or a snotty nose, having to wear muzzles, foreign holidays taboo, people avoiding each other when passing in the street, no spectators at sports events, nightclubs and gig venues closed, schools shut and major cities in the UK virtually deserted! Anybody would think there was a war on. Well, there is a good job that there isn't. If our current useless government was in charge back in 1940, they would have folded once the first air aid descended upon us. The moustachioed fascist mad man would have demanded our surrender and before you could utter the words "Goebbels Club Foot" the jackboots would have been goosestepping their way along Whitehall. What the fuck has become of us?

September 7th, 2020 will be the 80th anniversary of the first day of the blitz. It should be celebrated and remembered. An age when we had proud, tough, resilient people who went through hardship and hell unlike a majority of today Ě s folk who have surrendered to a nasty strain of the flu.

Let Ě s go back to September 7th , 1940 . After Nazi Germanys crushing victory over the French and Allied forces that June, the people in the UK were living in fear of immediate bombing and invasion. The population carried on in as normal a way possible, unlike the saps of today. By all accounts, Saturday September 7th, 1940 was a glorious sunny day. Folk were shopping in London sĚ High Streets and markets, going to the cinema and getting pissed in the boozers. At 5 pm the air raid sirens sounded. Within 5 minutes of the warning 300 German bombers were inclosing on East London. Royal Victoria Dock and King George V dock in Silvertown and Custom House were their main targets. Both docks were smashed to pieces, civilians in the area was sitting ducks. My mum now 88 years old remembers it well; she was 8 years old at that time. She said it was terrifying, her family made it into the Anderson shelter in their back yard, the bombs exploding around them. She remembers having to wear a gas mask at the time. In 2020 she has to wear a mask to go and buy a fucking loaf of bread from the corner shop! The air raid continued for over an hour. When it subsided, the scene was one of total devastation. Houses, shops, pubs on fire and the whole of the East End docks ablaze. Just when it seemed all clear, the bastards returned again at 7:30 pm. Another 300 German bombers came to continue their cowardly mission. The whole of East London was in flames. Silvertown, Custom House and Canning Town had been the worst hit. Fractured gas and water mains played havoc with telephone and power cables. Fire and ambulance crews were called to the scene from up to 100 miles away.

GHQ MUSIC Their bravery should never be forgotten. 327 London firemen were killed during the 2nd World War. In the early hours of Sunday September 8th, the bombing ceased. Over 300 tons of bombs had been dropped on London and 2000 people killed. Shell-shocked Cockneys were utterly dazed, but amid the total carnage their resolved hardened. They drank their tea and vowed to stick it out to the bitter end they carried on going to the pub, cinema and they went to work. None of that bollocks working from home, most of their homes had been blown to bits.

went about their ways as normal as possible, and schools remained open. 3 days after the first night of the blitz, Hallsville primary school in Canning Town took a direct hit from a parachute bomb officially killing 77 people, made up mainly of children. In later years it was estimated that up to 600 could have perished in this terrible tragedy. Schools stayed open all across the UK after this tragedy and all through the whole of the war, no matter that the threat they faced (that was massive). The fact that schools in the UK have been closed down for six months due to a flu bug is an utter disgrace. Over 40,000 died in Britain during the blitz, around the same figure the present government has claimed have died of Covid 19. Britons had to suffer so much hardship during World War 2 and the blitz especially London was hit more than most. In August 1944 a V1 flying bomb hit the Boleyn Ground and demolished part of the old South Bank (Bobby Moore Stand). It was the first and only time an away mob took that end in the Grounds history. It ́s funny that Hitler couldn’t knock down the Boleyn, two bigger crooks called Sullivan and Gold successfully raised it to the ground some 72 years later.

After September 7th, 1940 the Luftwaffe returned to bomb London for 57 consecutive nights.

They could never break our spirit.

The courage our people showed and the will to fight in this horrifying period in history should never ever be forgotten. It ́s about time this current lot in charge grew a big pair of bollocks and put a stop to this coward Covid craziness. The new normal? Stick it up your arse.
