When wine geeks think of Piedmont, they immediately think of Barolo and Barbaresco, which are famous for their Nebbiolo-based wines.

Surprisingly, Barolo and Barbaresco only account for 3% of Piedmont’s production, so there’s quite a bit more to uncover! Let’s get started with Piedmont wine.

Piedmont is cupped by the Alps to the North and it looks like something out of a scene in Game of Thrones.

To the South you’ll find the Apennines – less stunning – which are more like a set of lumpy hills. Despite their modest stature, the slopes heading towards the Apennines is where you’ll find the quality wine production in Piedmont.

Why is Wine Better From the Hills in Piedmont? There are two major features affecting the weather in Piedmont: the ice cold Alps and the warm Mediterranean. The tug-of-war (a.k.a. Diurnal) temperature variation makes the whole area fill up with morning fog that slowly burns off during the day.

This means the land higher up on the hills gets more sun. More sun = happy grapes = good wine. There are good wines to be found north of the Apennines in the foothills of the Alps. But since this area (around Gattinara) is much cooler, expect much lighter tasting, higher acid wines.

Barolo is located southwest of the city of Alba in the Apennines. The only vineyards with Barolo DOCG status are on the southern facing hills.

While the color of the wine is a pale brick red, it has a bold mouth feel with rigid tannin and slightly higher alcohol content (13% minimum). The wines of Barolo are aged for at least 18 months in barrel and are released after a total of 3+ years.

Tip Riserva level Barolo are aged for a minimum of 5 years.

Tip Vigna on a label indicates a single vineyard wine.

Tip The older the better; look for Barolo of 10+ years.

There are eleven different communes of Barolo with two different main taste styles (based on the soil type: limestone vs. sandstone).

The two communes to remember that are lighter in style are La Morra and Barolo with limestone-based soils. The communes of Serralunga d’Alba, Monforte d’Alba, and Castiglione Falletto are usually bolder with sandstone soils.

Number of MGAs: 39 Number of Wineries: 66 The classic division into slopes already used for other communes is all the more valid for La Morra, whose territory includes a large part of the imposing ridge that runs along the western border of the Barolo zone from Verduno to Novello, passing through Bricco del Dente, the second highest point of the zone.

The Eastern Slopes. This is by far the most heavily planted of the two, as well as the area where the most prestigious MGAs are located, and beyond that it’s also the only slope that I’ve managed to cover exhaustively and effectively with panoramic images. It can, in turn, be divided into three sectors. The first, which has as its reference point the village of Santa Maria, is characterized, on the average, by moderately high vineyard elevations, which then rise as they move towards the town of La Morra itself. Here the wines tend to be fairly straightforward rather than structured, and the most significant MGA units are Bricco San Biagio, Capalot, and Roggeri. In the second sector, in and around the village of Annunziata – where the large number of producers testifies to the importance and vitality of the area – the hillsides assume a rounder and more sinuous form with the sole exception – among the more highly regarded vineyards – of Rocche dell’Annunziata, whose shape anticipates the sector which follows. As far as the wines are concerned, though it is true that their chief characteristic is their balance, it is equally true that they show a greater depth than those of the preceding sector. Finally, just beyond the zone of Boiolo, we enter into the third and final sector, distinguished by the majestic ridges of Brunate and Cerequio and by the ample slopes of Fossati, Case Nere, and La Serra. With the sole exception of this last MGA, here the style is perceptibly more fullbodied and austere, registering in Brunate and Cerequio the most complete and balanced expression of Barolo.

The Western Slopes. More homogeneous than the preceding one, it is significantly less densely planted to vines and is characterized, on average, by slopes of lesser steepness and rather uniform exposures, particularly in the sector which includes Ascheri, Bricco Cogni, Castagni, Sant’Anna, and San Giacomo. Somewhat different, instead, is the second sector, which begins with the long and narrow ridge of Brandini and terminates with the majestic slopes of Berri. Between them is the area of Serradenari, distinguished by vineyard altitudes which are often somewhat elevated and by an exposure rather similar to that of the first sector of these Western Slopes. As for the geology, the Eastern Slopes are dominated by the various expressions of Sant’Agata Fossili Marls (laminated, sandy and typical), while on the western side there is a clear prevalence of the Cassano Spinola Formation, interrupted right in the middle by the Brandini ridge, where there’s a major outcrop of the Vena del Gesso (Chalk Vein) Formation.

Tasting Nebbiolo wines can be quite an arresting experience because the floral and light red fruit aromas suggest the wine is much lighter than it is.

Upon tasting Nebbiolo you will experience leathery, gripping high tannin that seems to clasp the inside of your lips to the front of your teeth. Despite its tannic structure, the wine’s fruity flavors of cherry and raspberries, supported with aromas of rose and anise, always seem to shine through. In cooler years, Nebbiolo gets a bit herbaceous with more sour cranberry fruit, rose hip and leather and red clay minerality.

Nebbiolo is a thinking person’s wine: subtle yet bold, simple yet complex…

With Nebbiolo’s delicate aromas but bold tannin, you’ll want to seek out less-gamey meats that have enough fat to absorb the ample tannin. The wine’s high acidity gives it the opportunity to match against higher acid foods with saltiness and perhaps vinaigrette-based sauces, but remember to balance by adding enough butter, fat or olive oil to compliment the wine’s tannin.

Even though Nebbiolo is traditionally paired with Italian foods, it has been well-received alongside Asian cuisine with brown sauces and Asian 5-spices sauces.

1847 The origins of the winery belong to the Colla Family, which has been growing vineyards in Piedmont since the middle of the 19th century. The territory of origin is Santo Stefano Belbo, a land of great Moscato, Langa that borders with the Monferrato. Generation after generation the family moves down to arrive in Alba, especially in Diano d’Alba, hill of excellence for Dolcetto, where in 1913 Paolo Colla was born.

1961 Paolo Colla vinifies Dolcetto with great passion but dreams of Barolo. It is 1961 that manages to acquire a farm in La Morra where he can finally grow and vinify Barolo. From the beginning they are wines of great finesse and longevity, that gets important recognition in the main wine expositions of the time.

1972 In 1972 Marivanna Colla, Paolo’s only daughter, married a young man from Roero: Gianni Gagliardo. Gianni is a young boy with so much ambition and is Paolo, with paternal affection, to transmit his passion for wine.

1974 The bottling of home-made amateur wines becomes professional. In addition to the traditional Barolo of Paolo Colla, the first wine created by Gianni could only be in the Roero area, his homeland. The early ’70s are a great time for this territory thanks to the intuition of some great producers of the time who start producing white wine on its sandy soils. The vine chosen by these is Arneis. Therefore the Favorita remained, a vine at the time almost disappeared that Gianni has therefore decided to adopt.

1978 Start of production of Moscato, which subsequently became an independent winery with the name of VillaM. The Colla family had never stopped growing Moscato, even planting it among the rows of Barolo, and this moment somehow marks a return to the origins.

1981 After Paolo passed away, Gianni Gagliardo assumes the reins of the cellar that bears his name, inheriting the tradition of the Colla family.

1984 With great innovative spirit, one of the first Metodo Classico of the area is born, the Gagliardo Brut, which somehow anticipates the times. It will be produced until the early nineties

1986 In 1986 the Paolo Colla Winery became Gianni Gagliardo, and a very special new logo was chosen: a falling mask that symbolizes the depth of wine and its ability to create strong bonds between people. ” In Vino Veritas ”..

1988 Towards the end of the decade new techniques were introduced in the cellar. It was in fact very recently that in Piedmont the tests of use of the French barrique began. Gianni decides to take an alternative route, and starts working with the most sober 500 and 700 liters tonneaux. Meanwhile the vineyard surfaces grow.

1990 In the early nineties, experiments were carried out on the Favorita vines, as well as an increase in the surfaces, and the vinification of the historic family vineyards. Just in 1990 Alberto, Gianni’s second son joined the winery. He gradually became passionate about the vineyard, which became his profession in 1998 After his studies in Enology, the firstborn Stefano joins the company. The new generation lives the wine with great passion, and immediately participates actively its thinking. It is in fact at the end of the decade that the family gradually begins to invest in new land from Barolo.

2003 It is the year in which the winemaking trials of the Cru begin. It is about micro-vinifying the vines in small sub-parcels, in order to understand where is the best quality of each hill, the peculiarities of the various areas of the vineyard, and the best way to make wine out of them.

2010 After a degree at the Agriculture’s University of Turin Paolo, third and last son, joins the company. After few years of training in different company areas, he now concentrates his time on tourist reception.

2013 Exactly ten years after the start of the small tests, the first two winery Cru had been released, now called MeGA (Additional Geographic Mentions). They are Barolo Lazzarito Vigna Preve 2013 and Barolo Castelletto 2013.

2014 The return to the big casks. And as far as the Cru are concerned, customized containers are sized to optimize the vinification and ageing.

2017 In July 2017 the family acquires Tenuta Garetto, a beautiful estate with 10 hectares of vineyard and winery in Agliano Terme. In the heart of the most premium Barbera area in the world, recently defined by the new appellation Nizza docg.
