• Before making any of the following adjustment be sure to read the OM for more details about adjustments.

• Never cycle net wrap system with no hay in the chamber and the PTO engaged. Net can fed into the rotary fed system or the pickup causing damage.

Follow all steps required for safety instructions in OM: • Disengage all power • Shut off tractor engine • Make adjustments on level ground • To avoid injury from inadvertent movement of net actuator, disconnect the monitor-controller power plug from tractor power source or unplug connector at net wrap actuator.

• See Page 7 for recommended minimum number of wraps for hay, cereal crops, and residue crops with minimum amount of handling.

• When producing round bales for commercial applications it is prudent to increase the number of wraps on the bale for additional handling.

Bale shape and how it affects application of net

BALE SHAPE AND HOW IT AFFECTS THE APPLICATION OF NET Bale shape is a very important factor with net wrap issues that is often overlooked.

Look at the bale to CHECK BALE SHAPE – If net has tears, rips, blow outs, or does not cover the full width of the bale, it could be due to barrel, cone, or hour glass shaped bales.

Making good bales that are flat across the top with solid square shoulders is important to good packaging performance whether wrapping the bale with twine, Edge to Edge net, CoverEdge Net or B-Wrap.

The better the bale – the better the coverage and performance of the packaging product.

Bale Shape And How It Affects The Application Of Net Follow steps in operator’s manual (OM) Recommend baling guidelines: Baler setup - should be correctly for field and crop conditions. Under normal operating conditions, run baler at 1800 rpm. In very light or extremely dry crop condition it may help to bale at 1500 rpm. In extremely heavy crop condition, operate at higher rpm (above 1800).

Tractor Setup - tires (both front and rear) should be set out wider than the bale chamber (See OM for setting).

Windrow should be one-half or less, or full-width of the bale chamber.

Driving techniques – drive so bricks in the display are in the green zone when bale is complete.

Monitor - make sure monitor is relaying accurate information from the bale shape sensors.

Before making adjustments to the net wrap unit take time to look at the bales.

Check following monitor setting: See OM for the following.

Check Voltage to Monitor --For low voltage to monitor – number or wraps and cutting of net Check Bale Size Calibration – For number of wraps and net wrapping on #11 roll Check Bale Shape Sensors – For net coverage and performance Note: Bales should be flat across the top with solid square shoulders– the better the bale the better net coverage and net performance

Loading & threading of net 7, 8 and 9 series balers

LOADING & THREADING NET

Loading of net is simple.

DO NOT MAKE IT MORE DIFFICULT THAN NECCESARY. Threading net incorrectly may causes the net to wrap the rubber drive roll.

Wide stripes on right

Place roll of net in cradle.

Position so wide strip is on the right side.

When pulling net from roll make sure that net is coming off full width of roll.

Feed loose end of net between space in front of net cradle and front of rubber roll.

Let loose end of net hang freely between frame and rolls (1).

Rotate net cradle into home position.

Gather loose end of net and twist a few turns to make a rope as close to the drive rolls as possible.

Position the twisted net between the rubber and steel rolls (1).

Ratchet the brake release (2) lever four times to thread the net between the steel and rubber rolls.

Lock the brake lever in place on the fourth ratchet.

Trim off the tail of the net, leaving approximately 1 in. (25 mm) tail. Make sure to cut net away from rubber roll.

Note: When loading net wide stripe to the right and Do not feed more than 1 in, (25 mm) of net between drive rolls, or net will wrap on rubber roll.

Random tears in net around the bale

RANDOM TEARS IN NET AROUND THE BALE Most random tears are a result crop wedging between belt guides and crossbars.

Check or make the following adjustments to correct this issue: Check gap between crossbar and belt guides Check belt tracking Reducing engine rpm and shifting up to maintain ground speed, to reduce chaff buildup up in gate.

Most net failures start from tear or tears around diameter of bale. This weakens the net adjacent to the area of the tear

Note: Balers NOT equipped with Speed Compensation/Slip Clutch Alert kit - reducing engine RPM or PTO speed will affect the number of wraps. See OM for recommend number of wraps for baling at reduced engine RPM or PTO speed.

Note: If baler is equipped with Speed Compensation/Slip Clutch Alert option set monitor for desired number of wrap. Monitor will compensate for running at reduced engine rpm’s.

Different crops require different number of wraps for holding the bale together. Following the Minimum recommendations on the sleeve, in the OM or Net Operating Guide provided with the roll of wrap.

Most random tears are a result crop wedging between belt guides and crossbar.

Check and adjust clearance between all belt guides and crossbar Clearance must be within specs Use 5/32 drill bit to check clearance between belt guides and crossbar. This is the maximum clearance and will help to reduce buildup in this area.

If unable to obtain adjustment, check crosstube for straightness.

If clearance between belt guides and crossbar requires adjustment either add or remove shims (E97978) to obtain the 5/32 in. (5 mm) spec.

- Clearance less than 5/32 in.(5 mm) chaff builds up in a few bales and can cause tears in net - Clearance more than 5/32 in. ( 5 mm) belts can pass between a belt guide and crossbar also tearing the net or damaging the belt.

If unable to obtain adjustment, check crosstube for straightness.

Note: if adjustment is made to crossbar it will require checking guide washer to lower net wrap guide.

Random tears in net around the bale

Most random tears are a result of a buildup of crop or chaff in the area of the lower belt guides (rear gate).

If clearance between belt guides and crossbar was adjusted (shims added or removed) Check clearance between guide washer and lower net wrap guide.

Clearance must be within 0.020-0.100 in. (0.5 to 2.5 mm).

Add or remove shims (E97978) between lower net wrap guide and bottom of baler side sheet as necessary to obtain adjustment.

Tears consistently in one area around bale

TEARS CONSISTENTLY IN ONE AREA AROUND BALE Measure tear locations on bale. On the same end of net wrap unit, make the same measurement.

Check belt tracking – belts not tracking correctly – curling up on belt guides can pinch the net and cause tears.

Changing position of the lower rear gate roll (#8 roll) in slot will change tracking. Follow the steps in the OM for check and adjusting belt tracking.

Check pan for buildup, rough edges, or rust. Clean pan with a SCOTCH-BRITE type pad in the direction of belt travel.

Check net wrap guide assembly for rough edges, rust, paint runs, or anything that can snag the net.

Check for bent or bowed net guides cause hot spots that can melt the net.

Tears consistently in one area around bale

If belt tracking was adjusted check net wrap pan. Pan should be contacting belts all the way across the baler.

Check net pan for straightness -- if pan is bowed see OM for Straightening Net Pan. Adjust pan so it takes 22-44 N (5-10 lb) to pull pan down from belts.

Pin wear in side sheet Causes rubber feed roll sheave to move away from the brake when applied.

Do visual check in net wrap side sheets – check for pin wear in slotted hole Slotted holes (1) in net wrap side sheet can become egged (2) out from the pin on bearing support working in and out.

This allows the rubber feed roll to move forward in the net wrap attachment. See DTAC solution # 81337.

Shims (1) should rotate freely on the hex shaft at each end of rubber feed roll. Shim rubber roll according to DTAC solution #81337.

Pin wear in side sheet Causes excessive wear between pin on bearing support and net wrap side panels.

To correct pin wear to net wrap side sheet and stop rubber roll from moving forward during wrapping cycle – Reducing brake torque.

Welding key stock to both right and left hand side panels (photo #2).

See DTAC solution 81337 for more details.

Most 9 Series balers and all 0 series balers will not require this step. Due to change in bearing support mounting bracket (left side panel).

Net Feed Roll Brake—Visually check for low brake torque. Open access door for net actuator and look in opening.

Net should be wrapped tightly around steel roll, not looped away from the steel roll as shown.

Check brake pad for wear. Replace if worn more than half way through.

Make sure net wrap brake is engaged.

Check brake torque – must be within specifications to stop rubber feed roll.

Measure with a dial-type torque wrench. Torque should be 54-95 N.m (40-70 lb-ft). The higher torque is preferred, but do not exceed with 95 N.m (70 lb-ft).

Net Wrap V-Belt Idler Not Adjusted Within Specifications Notch

if idler is misadjusted, net can start feeding into the baler before the counterknife has traveled high enough to clear the incoming net. Counterknife can then carry net up to the rubber roll causing it to wrap.

On right-hand side sheet, measure down 3/8 in. (10 mm) and draw a line from the notch.

Note: Before making adjustment remove net from net wrap unit.

Go to channel 15 on the BaleTrak Plus monitor. Push RETRACT button to raise the counterknife. Go to channel 19 on the BaleTrak Pro. Push EXTEND button to raise counterknife. (To avoid injury from inadvertent movement of net actuator, disconnect the monitor power plug from tractor power source or unplug connector at net wrap actuator).

Counterknife should come up to, or above line drawn on side sheet. Counterknife should NOT hit the top of notch.

Return counterknife to the home position using the RETRACT or EXTEND button depending on monitor (Plus or Pro) (To avoid injury from inadvertent movement of net actuator, disconnect the monitor power plug from tractor power source or unplug connectorat net wrap actuator).

If counterknife does not come up to the line, adjust V-belt idler. Move idler down in mounting slot.

If counterknife contacts the notch, adjust V- belt idler up in the mounting slot.

Note: V-belt is a special Kevlar belt. use only JD part # E94524. Do not use other type of aftermarket belt.

To check gap, use a piece of paper for a feeler gauge between counterknife (1) and cutoff knife (2).

Paper should not pass through both ends or through the center.

Loosen cutoff knife mounting hardware (1), four nuts required, and bow cutoff knife toward rear of machine.

Tighten hardware while holding back on cutoff knife (2).

If paper passes on either ends. Go to channel 15 on the BaleTrak Plus monitor.

Dull cutoff knife – net not cutting cleanly leaving long tails.

To check sharpens of cutoff knife infield without removing cutoff knife.

Remove brush.

Raise counterknife by going to channel 15 (plus) or 19 (pro) monitor – press extend key until counterknife is full raised.

Route 12” long pieces of 16,000 rd balers sisal twine between knife back of knife and baler frame up to top edge of cutoff knife.

With needle nose pliers pull twine over down over edge of cutoff knife.

Grasp each end of twine and pull straight down – DO NOT slide twine on knife edge.

Should take no more than 28 pounds of pull to cut twine.

If more pull is needed REPLACE OR SHARPEN cutoff knife.

Note: to avoid injury from inadvertent movement of net actuator, disconnect the monitor controller power plug from tractor power source or unplug connector at new wrap actuator.

Remove old cutoff knife and install new cutoff knife.

Install hardware torque two outside bolts and tighten finger tight center 4 bolts.

With hand or small pry bar bow cutoff knife toward rear of machine. Excessive bow will cause counter to contact cutting edge of cutoff knife dulling edge of cutoff knife.

Torque hardware while holding back on cutoff knife in center.

Check clearance between counterknife and cutoff knife with piece of paper.

Note: Sharping cutoff knife does require some skill to maintain the edge replacing cutoff knife maybe a better option.

Reinstall knife. Make sure counterknife contacts cutoff knife at each end and in the center.

Install brush (1) and adjust to steel roll. Metal edge of brush should be within 0.040 -0.12 in.

(1 to 3 mm) (2) of the steel roll.

Dirt buildup on bristles of brush -Dirt buildup on brush - brush not holding tails of net When brush assembly is removed for making adjustments, inspect and clean dirt from bristles.

Clean brush annually or sooner if operating in dirty conditions, this will help to prevent net from wrapping on rollers in baler and damage to the steel roll.

Install brush and adjust to steel roll. Metal edge of brush should be within 0.040 -0.12 in.

(1 to 3 mm) (2) of the steel roll.

Cuts in rubber feed roll Cuts in rubber feed roll can open up and pinch net causing the net to wrap the roll.

Make repair to roll. Use sharp knife (razor blade knife) to cut a V-groove along cut - not more that 1/32-in (1 mm) deep.

Replace rubber roller.

When removing net from rubber feed roll, DO NOT CUT NET OFF OF ROLL WITH KNIFE.

Before checking clearance between front panel and rubber roll check for pin wear in slotted hole (photo 2).

If soltted hole is egged out see DTAC solution 81337 for welding key stock to net wrap side sheets.

Go to channel 15 (BaleTrak)19 (BalePro) monitor—press the extend key and move counterknife to the up position—drive belt engaged. (To avoid injury from inadvertent movement of net actuator, disconnect the monitor power plug from tractor power source or unplug connector at net wrap actuator).

Check clearance between rubber roll and front panel (photo 1).

If clearance is too wide (gap) bend leg of front panel toward rubber roll to obtain 0.12-0.24 in. (3-6 mm). See DTAC solution 84181.

If clearance is too narrow (gap) use pry bar to bend leg of front away from rubber roll to increase gap 0.12-0.24 (3 to 6 mm).

Note: Check pin wear and tension drive before checking clearance between rubber roll and front panel.

Rubber crop deflector gets bent and sticks out between the baler side sheets and outside belts. Bent crop deflectors may prevent counterknife from raising high enough causing net to wrap the rubber roll.

Cut along bent area and remove

Cut rubber crop deflector along the bend line as shown to prevent it from getting bent and sticking out between the outside belts and baler side sheets.

Note: Rubber crop deflector is located inside rear gate.

Any or all of the items listed below can cause net to wrap on the spirals on the #8 roller Rough edges or weld splatter on spirals Long tails of net Net wrap pan not touching baler belts Net brush removed or full of dirt

Net catches and wraps spirals Check for any rough edges, burrs or weld splatter on spirals.

Smooth any rough edges from spirals with Emory cloth or small file – should be smooth to the touch.

Make sure the leading edge of spiral is touching the roll If there is a gap, bend leading point of spiral down to the roll and file smooth.

Note: After removing net from spirals be sure to check spirals for any rough edges.

Check net wrap pan. Pan (1) should be contacting belts the full width of baler. If there is a gap between pan and outside edges of end belts, pan may need to be straighten (refer to OM).

If adjustment cannot be achieved, remove pan assembly and straighten u-channel underneath the pan.

Adjust pan so it takes 22 - 44 N.m (5-10 lb ) to pull pan down from belts (2).

Bend leaf spring to increase pan pressure.

Check baler to make sure there are no tails. Tails are an indicator of poor net cutoff.

Note: For a clean cut of net, make sure brake torque is at high end of specifications, counterknife contacts cutoff knife correctly and cutoff knife is sharp.

Brush helps to eliminate cut ends or tails leading net into baler.

Tails can catch on spirals and splices resulting in wrapping or tearing of net.

Clean brush annually or sooner if operating in dirty conditions. This will help to prevent damage to the steel roll.

Replace brush if bristles are damaged or bent over.

Reinstall brush.

Note: clean dirt or buildup from on brush before reinstalling.

Net wrapping on the #11 roll (upper roll)

NET WRAPPING ON THE #11 ROLL (UPPER ROLL) some portion or strip of net is missing from bale Check for making oversized bales.

Make sure operator has stopped baling when monitor reaches full size.

Check Bale size sensor calibration.

Check for long tails indicating poor cutting of net.

Check belts for damaged belt splice, sand burrs, dirt, or divot flap on belts.

Check net wrap brush for dirt build up or removed.

# 11 roll

If bale is larger than what maximum bale size for the model of baler the top of the bale is to close to the #11 roll.

Net may follow belts up around the number 11 roll instead of sticking to the bale and traveling around bale.

Measure bale diameter – both horizontally and vertically. Take average of measurements repeat measurements on opposite end of bale if either end or center exceed maximum bale diameter do the following: Recalibrate bale size sensor (channel 5 on monitor) if necessary, see OM under Adjusting Bale Size Calibration.

Decrease bale size on monitor-controller to reduce actual bale size-this will allow more time for operator to stop before reaching an oversized bale.

Long tails not controlled by brush

The brush holds tails or the cut end of net as the wrapping cycle begins. Tails are not leading net into baler and will be less likely to catch belts, splices or number 11 roll.

Clean brush annually or sooner if operating in dirty conditions.

Replace brush if damaged or missing.

Install brush and adjust to steel roll following steps in the OM for model of baler.

Note: Some 7 series baler have a different brush than current model of balers make sure to adjust according to the OM

Check roll pressure spring length. Length should be 13/16 in. (20.5 mm) Check distance between bolt head and bracket 0.39 – 0.197 in (1-12 mm)

To confirm feed roll pressure, insert dollar bill between rolls at one end.

There should be resistance when pulling back on dollar bill.

Adjust nut one flat at a time until resistance is met.

Only check roll pressure at the end of the rolls.

Note: Only check roll pressure at the end of the rolls. Too little pressure and net will slip between rolls affect net on bale. Too much pressure may cause the rubber feed roll to wrap or the net may not to go over the edge of the bale.

Net wrap is a time based system – Speed Compensation/Slip Clutch Alert kit is standard on 8, 9 and 0 series balers with Net wrap and Mega Wide Plus pickup.

Speed Compensation/Slip Clutch Alert kit was optional on all 7 series balers and early 8 series produce before 2010.

Balers equipped with a Speed compensation/Slip Clutch Alert kit will not have this issue -- if kit is turn on and in working order.

Baler without Speed compensation/Slip Clutch Alert kit operated at more than or less than rate PTO speed will affect the number of wraps on a bale.

Note: Verify number of wraps requires counting number of wraps on a bale. See www.tama-usa.com Number of Wraps video for addition information

Check monitor voltage on channel 15 (Plus) and channel 19 (PRO). To check voltage have tractor running along with all other electrical accessories, radio, light, AC etc.

Check voltage in twine mode.

Use the EXTEND key to move twine arms from the home position.

Use RETRACT key to return arms to home - continue to hold key and stall out twine arms (no more than 4 seconds).

Read number on display for voltage as arms are stalled out.

Voltage should not drop below 10 volts.

If 10 or below, install wiring harness AFH210360 attach harness directly to the battery for power supply.

Note: For more information read yellow tag attached to monitor-controller wiring harness

Ratchet the brake release (2) lever 1-2 times to thread the net between the steel and rubber rolls.

Lock the brake lever in place on second ratchet.

Note: Do not feed more than 1 in, (25 mm) of net between drive rolls, or net will wrap on rubber roll.

Trim off the tail of the net, leaving approximately 1 in. (25 mm) tail. Make sure to cut net away from rubber roll.
