From the President Dear ENMU Family, Eastern New Mexico University graduated 440 students in December (an all-time record for fall commencement), enjoyed a wonderful holiday on the High Plains and then survived Winter Storm Goliath. More importantly, we once again fulfilled our mission by providing our students with an excellent educational experience.

A key to our success at Eastern has always been a strong emphasis on institutional stewardship. Let me give you a few examples: 1. ENMU’s tuition and fees remained among the lowest in the nation. At $5,168 annually, we rate as the fourth most inexpensive university in our seven state region. In addition, our residence halls and apartments are in exceptional condition and among the most affordable in our region.

2. The University has completed over $160,000,000 in construction (mostly renovations) in the past 15 years. Additionally, Eastern will be on the November 2016 state-wide General Obligation Bond for $11,000,000 to complete the renovation of the Golden Library/ Student Success Center.

3. The ENMU-Foundation continues its commitment to ENMU and our students. Since 2000, the ENMU Foundation has awarded over $5,200,000 in scholarships and $7,200,000 in faculty enrichment and program development. In 15 years, the ENMU Foundation has grown its total assets from $3,000,000 to $15,500,000.

Eastern values every dollar that comes to the University, whether through tuition and fees, state appropriations or donations from our alumni and friends. Live from Los An The Television Academy recognized Viola Davis as the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her role as criminal defense professor / attorney Annalise Keating in ABC Studio’s How to Get Away with Murder at the 67th Emmy Awards.

Viewers recognize ABC television shows for the their inclusiveness and complexity, which serve as creative mirrors for the social, cultural, ethical and demographic transitions unfolding in the early 21st century of the United States of America and the larger world. Nashville, Scandal, Grey’s Anatomy, Blackish and many more fall under the ABC Television brand.

ABC Design Director Lucas Aragón (BS 95) sits at the forefront of television’s thematic, technical and existential maturation. “I get to manage 20 creative professionals every day who believe in the ABC brand,” says Lucas. Lucas oversees the development and deployment of primetime advertisements for ABC television shows, such as How to Get Away with Murder and Scandal.

Eastern New Mexico University Department of Art professor Greg Erf invited Lucas to campus during the spring of 2014 for a talk targeted towards aspiring ENMU creative professionals. Not only did Lucas discuss, but also showed students how he managed the creative process for two projects.

First, Lucas discussed his team’s use of the color red as a focal point around which to design advertisements for How to Get Away with Murder.

Including a four-year stint as the senior art director for Washington D.C.’s National Geographic Channel, Lucas has also served as the Vice President of Design for OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network and Lifetime Networks. Prior to the National Geographic Channel, Lucas worked on the news side of television at Washington D.C.’s WRC-TV, Boston’s WHDH-TV, Orlando’s WESH-TV and Dallas-Fort Worth’s KDFW-TV. The Texas State Historical Association says Fort Worth is ‘where the west begins’; the broader DFW metroplex is where Lucas launched his career as well. “The art department scheduled a trip for students to tour studios in Dallas. One of the studios was the CBS affiliate, and while I was there, I reached out and asked if they had any internships. I got internship offers in Amarillo and the DFW area. I selected the opportunity in DFW with it being the bigger market, ranked in the top five of US markets,” says Lucas.

Matthew Guastaferro (BS 02) with an internship and eventually hired him in a full-time capacity. After that, Matthew went on to work for America’s Most Wanted as well as the Cable News Network (CNN). He now owns his own company in Washington, DC called Hugo Creative.

CNN debuted at 6 p.m. EST on June 1, 1980 and transformed television as the first company to provide 24-hour coverage. 36 years later, “the platform in which people consume content is one of the biggest changes to consider. And looking ahead, how we market content regardless of platform will become more important,” says Lucas.

As an intern, KDFW-TV assigned Lucas the tasks of creating graphics for live newscasts as well as the company’s promotional materials. In less than a year, KDFW-TV upgraded Lucas’s summer internship to a full-time position. “Internships are a great way to get your foot in the door in any industry but especially entertainment,” says Lucas.

Over the years, Lucas has stayed in contact with ENMU art professor Greg Erf. “Greg Erf was an important mentor for me and was someone who encouraged me to pursue the goals that I had identified as wanting to pursue, something I appreciate even more now as someone who mentors others,” says Lucas.

Santa Ana: Golf at its Best

Every summer, golfers gather for Eastern New Mexico University’s Alumni Scholarship Golf Tournament. Inaugurated at the Desert Greens Golf Course in Albuquerque, tournament planners changed the venue to the Santa Ana Golf Course in 2014. The tournament’s planners decided on the venue change as a result of the tournament’s growth since its 2010 inception. The 2015 tournament grew from a 156 to a 180-player tournament. More importantly, the tournament has grown in the number of corporate sponsors that participate.

Santa Ana Golf Course’s PGA Apprentice Javier Chavez notes that “the ENMU Alumni Scholarship Golf Tournament is one of our larger tournaments.” The 27-hole course allows for play from 5,500 to 7,400 yards and features a 22,000-square-foot club house accompanied by a four-star restaurant. A sign of its appeal, the majority of the tournament’s golfers bear no direct affiliation to ENMU and participate annually in the tournament because of the event’s reputation and recognition as a premiere tournament in the American southwest.

In six years, the alumni scholarship golf tournament has raised nearly $150,000 with the majority coming from corporate sponsorships. Undergraduate (sophomore and above) and graduate students whose relatives (parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins) qualify as alumni are eligible to apply for the scholarship. The tournament is a tangible bridge between current students/scholarship recipients and former students/tournament planners and participants. The tournament’s planners, led by Terry Othick (MBA 70, BBA 68), sit on the Alumni Board of Directors with the annual golf tournament serving as the board’s largest fundraising initiative.

Participants travel from beyond the southwest, as does George McGill (BBA 69), a New Jersey resident who fondly recalls his days at ENMU. “ENMU was a great school, and I can’t say enough about Dr. Meiser who was the VP of Academic Affairs when I was a student. He was a very kind man,” says McGill. George carries on that legacy of kindness by sponsoring a golf team annually where he asks the tournament planners, “find me three players – their skill level does not matter.”

Alumnus Goes Above and Beyond in the Philippines

On Sept. 26, 2015, the Filipino American Foundation of New Mexico recognized Scott Berry (BS 93) for the work he is doing in the province of Bohol in the Philippines.

the government, many schools refuse to allow unprepared children to attend school. 60 percent of children do not finish elementary school because of poverty.”

Scott joined the U. S. Air Force in 1975 and was stationed at Cannon Air Force Base for many years, which led him to attend ENMU. After retiring from the Air Force as a Technical Sergeant in 1995, Scott taught special education for many years in Albuquerque.

In 2011, he organized Educate Bohol, a 501(c)(3) public charity, which provides school supplies and other support to keep children in school. During 2015, Educate Bohol handed out over 1,100 backpacks filled with pencils, paper, notebooks, and other school essentials to children at high risk of dropping out of school.

In 2011 Scott made his first trip to the Philippines with a church group on a mission to build churches. While building he saw a kid standing around and asked the boy why he wasn’t in school. When the student replied he didn’t have a pencil, the former teacher thought it was just an excuse. He took the kid to the market to buy him a pencil and other supplies. This simple kind gesture led to a whole new mission when Scott learned that this boy was one of many children who do not attend school because they cannot afford the needed supplies.

Educate Bohol impacts students, teachers, and parents. The students who are able to attend school have hope of bettering the lives of themselves and their families by being able to compete for higher paying jobs.

Scott explains, “Unlike the U.S., children in the Philippines who do not have the materials they need for school are often discouraged from attending class. Although not an official stand of

Scott and his wife Zella live in Rio Rancho and travel to the Philippines each year to distribute school supplies and meet with parents, pastors, teachers and hundreds of children.

But the impact of Scott’s efforts goes beyond helping children get an education. In the Philippines, children who are not in school may quickly become the victims of child labor, human trafficking and the child sex trade. Studies have identified education as the primary protective factor keeping children out of the hands of traffickers.

Recent graduate Jeffery Richeson (BBA 15) experienced first-hand the positive results that come from hard work and an ENMU education.

Two weeks prior to graduation, Four Seasons’ Rancho Encantado resort in Santa Fe hired Jeffery as a front desk agent. “It was an amazing opportunity to work for the world’s premiere resort, especially since most Four Seasons resorts are found in larger cities,” says Jeffery.

The Eastern alumnus worked for another multinational company prior to landing his job with Four Seasons: the Marseille, Francebased company Sodexo, Eastern New Mexico University’s exclusive catering services provider.

“Immediately, I was able to build on my academic experience as a business major specializing in hospitality management with my first job out of school,” says Jeffery. “Working for Sodexo while at ENMU added to my readiness too.”

As a student, Jeffery completed a semester abroad at Seoul, South Korea’s Hankuk University of Foreign Studies with his best friend Zachary Self (BS 15). “Hankuk University was a great experience. It was very different from Eastern, as Hankuk is surrounded by skyscrapers and centrally located in Seoul,” says Jeffery.

Jeffery spent the first eight years of his life in the Brazilian cities of Sao Paulo and Araruama and moved to Hobbs, New Mexico at the end of the 20th century, finding his way to ENMU at the dawn of a new century.

ENMU Allied Health Symposium

ENMU held its inaugural Allied Health Symposium on Nov. 20-21, 2015. Students conceived the event and gathered professionals from many allied health fields together for one event.

Students gathered from local high schools and colleges to attend the seminars presented by New Mexico health professionals.

To kick off the symposium, ENMU President Steven Gamble hosted a reception. Guest speakers from UNM’s School of Medicine, Division of Physical Therapy, College of Pharmacy and Office for Diversity along with Roosevelt General Hospital and ENMU Nursing Program mingled with other ENMU faculty and about 30 students.

The following day began with an introduction ceremony, where moderator Kyle Stephens (BS 15), President of ENMU’s Caduceus Health Society (CHS) provided 73 students with an overview about the break-out sessions. During the sessions, students learned about the application process, how to become a more competitive applicant and what to expect in these professional schools and in these specific careers.

Dominique Zamora, aspiring physical therapist and ENMU track athlete, said, “I learned the time constraints and parameters of the pre-requisites that are required for admission to PT school.”

President Gamble praised the event, “The symposium was highly successful. It provided our students and the students from several

other schools the opportunity to learn much more about the health science professions. I am grateful that our colleagues from the UNM-HSC traveled to Portales to speak with our students.”

Joseph Sena, a senior at Texico High School, described the experience as memorable, “With the motivation and information gained at the medical symposium, I will do whatever it takes to reach my dream of becoming a doctor.”

James McKinnell MD, a Pediatric Oncologist at UNM who helped by promoting the event to his colleagues at UNM-Health Sciences Center, said “The Allied Health Symposium at ENMU provided a unique opportunity for representatives from several UNMHSC programs to speak directly with potential candidates for our programs from eastern New Mexico. The responses from students who attended, their enthusiasm and engagement, were very gratifying. I hope this is the first of what becomes a regular conference at ENMU.”

Local Educator and Cowboy The National Western Cowboy Hall of Fame and Museum in Oklahoma City, inducted B. J. Pierce (MA 62, BA 49), at age 89, on Sept. 26, 2015. The Hall includes such luminaries as Western actor Slim Pickens, all-around cowboy Bob Crosby, bull riders Ty Murray and Lane Frost and steer wrestler Homer Pettigrew of Grady.

B. J. received a bachelor’s in industrial arts from Eastern in 1949 and a master’s in education in 1962. He met Pattie Rawls at ENMU, fell in love and got married.

He played basketball for the Greyhounds under Coach Al Garten. After finishing the 1944-45 season 3-20 and 3-17 in 194546, he decided that riding horses to rope calves was more rewarding than being ridden by coaches.

He won three consecutive International Rodeo Association (IRA) calf-roping titles from 1952-54 – the only three-time IRA calf-roping champion. With a combination of speed and skill, in his first summer of rodeoing during college, B. J. won $13,000 — enough in the 1940s to pay his and his wife’s way through college for all four years.

He estimates he won around $130,000 in his rodeo career, which one would multiply by several times in today’s money. B. J. says he saved money by “camping out in a tent with a sleeping bag and using a Coleman stove for cooking.” B. J. also competed in team roping, steer roping and wild cow milking during his competitive years. B. J. continued to rodeo well into the 1960s.

Marea decided to step away from public education after 17 years to pursue other education-related opportunities. In 2013, she completed a collection of leveled readers and first grade literacy supplements.

communication, and she felt challenged by the high expectation of her professors at ENMU.

“What a joy to create a product from my 15 years of experience in first grade.” Marea has enjoyed creating a product and building a business from scratch. She said, “the learning curve from classroom educator to business owner, publisher, and advertising, marketing, and sales director has been staggering. I really only feel I’ve just begun.”

She explained, Marea Smith “ENMU professors certainly played a significant role in refining my ability to communicate, consider variables in a given situation, and the administration training allowed me to contribute in unique ways as a classroom teacher.”

Marea’s family has a long history at ENMU. Her grandparents, Floren Jr. and Mary Thompson, were key figures at the University from 1952-1982. Her parents met at ENMU. Marea explained, “I grew up enjoying ENMU people and events and felt connected to Eastern in a very unique way.”

Marea and her husband Franklin Smith (MEd 10, BS 96) chose to homeschool their youngest children. “I know in years to come that I will consider this precious and fleeting time to be my life’s most important work and one of my greatest achievements.” The home school educator, who has taught world geography, ancient civilizations, world religions, astronomy, marine biology, the Middle Ages, accelerated mathematics, grammar and piano, feels more empowered than ever to challenge and motivate her students.

While Marea was living and working in Waco, Texas, ENMU professors Dr. Alan Garrett and the late Dr. Kathy Peca allowed her to begin her master’s of education with long-distance directed studies. She enjoyed working with the professors both long-distance and on campus during summer classes.

B. J. says some of the faculty and staff that stand out in his memory from his ENMU days are Dr. Carl Parker, Thelma Mallory and Claude Burns Wiebel in education, O. M. Williamson in agriculture, and Eugene Mann, the publicity and publications director.

“I am very happy with what I’ve accomplished in life, including being inducted into the rodeo hall of fame. It’s been very satisfying, and everywhere I go I run into people I know. “I’m happy as a lark because I have a lot of nice people around me. I wouldn’t trade my life for anything.”

Former Greyhound Mike Ahlenius (BBA 88) along with teammates and classmates from multiple generations returned for Blackwater Draw Stadium’s final game on October 24, 2015 to reminisce, celebrate and look forward to the future. Two months earlier, Greyhound legend B.B. Lees (MA 57, BA 52) passed away; coaching legend Jack Scott passed away as well in December 2014. Coupled with the University’s discontinuation of the Zia symbol, the final game at Blackwater Draw Stadium marks the transition from one era to the next one, a pivot point rooted in the past.

Mike, along with many other past Greyhounds, orchestrated the event using social media to reach different generations of players.

The event also served as a way to ask about the missing records and if they were lost, deleted or if there are plans to recover the data from the 80s . “Coach Josh Lynn stopped by after the game to tell us it meant a lot to his current players and staff. And that meant a lot to us.” Mike explained, “It was huge that we were able to merge multiple generations of players and show that we still really bleed green. That’s the bond that bridges the past to the present.”

Pops: The Sound of America, the Pulse of ENMU

Henry Lee Higginson established the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO) in 1881. Initially referred to as “Promenade Concerts”, second as “Popular Concerts”, the BSO shortened and simplified the title to ‘Pops Concerts’ as the 19th transitioned to the 20th century. The Boston Symphony Orchestra credits its half-century composer Arthur Fiedler (1930-1979) with establishing “the Boston Pops as a national icon” that other institutions around the United States of America embraced, adopted and expanded over the twentieth century.

ENMU inaugurated its Pops tradition 49 years ago and celebrated its 48th Annual Pops Dinner Concert on Saturday, Nov. 14, 2015.

The event recognized the contributions of music educators and alumni Eunice Schumpert (Attended), Brian Uerling (MM 03) and David Allen (MME 76, BME 69).

ENMU Executive Director of Planning and Analysis / University Friends of Music President Dr. Patrice Caldwell says that David, Brian and Eunice “belong to a special category of teachers who have a gift and are willing to share it.” In her 90s, Eunice continues to offer private piano lessons.

The University Friends of Music awarded $10,500 in scholarships and awards and over $4,000 to sponsoring guest artists at ENMU during the 2014-2015 academic year. By showcasing student performers and recognizing ENMU faculty, music educators and community supporters, the annual Pops dinner concert plays an important role in the philanthropic work of the University Friends of Music.

Program Serves Livestock Producers and Dairy Industry

Eastern New Mexico University designed an artificial insemination (AI) breeding program for ENMU pre-vet students and production and management students. The AI industry as well as dairy and livestock producers who want to improve their genetics.

Students participate in hands-on learning opportunities and gain experience working and handling large animals in this class. It provides training in a common industry technique to improve the genetics of the herd. Dr. Darron Smith, professor of reproductive physiology, directs the program.

“Alumni who have graduate from ENMU have donated cattle for the class,” Dr. Smith explains. “The students care for the animals, clean the pens and feed them during the time the animals are in

the barn. This requires twice a day care and cleaning and provides the students with knowledge about animal husbandry.

“This class is based on cooperating dairy farmers willing to work with us. We could not do it without their help,” Dr. Smith continues.

The class began about ten years ago and has trained over 150 students in the techniques of artificial insemination and cattle management. Dr. Smith explains, “This is extremely important to our pre-vet students who often are from urban areas and have no large animal experience. It is also important to our production and management students who would like to improve their family livestock operation.”

ENMU Student National FFA Agricultural Ambassador

ENMU student, Kassie Waller, has been selected to be a National FFA Agricultural Ambassador. She is majoring in agricultural sciences. The role of an ambassador is to increase awareness of the industry and promote opportunities in leadership, facilitation and agriculture for the national ambassador team.

“The ambassadors are trained to give presentations and facilitate workshops to audiences of all ages who are interested in learning more about agriculture,” Kassie explains.

“An applicant must also be a full-time student the entire year they serve as an agriculture ambassador, be a former FFA member, current Collegiate FFA member or a member of the National FFA Alumni Association,” adds Dr. Marshall Swafford, assistant professor of Career Technical Education.

Kassie began her FFA career as an eighth grader in the Texico, NM FFA Chapter. She was an active member of the chapter and participated in three national level events.

“The collegiate FFA at Eastern works closely with the local and regional high school chapters,” says Dr. Richard Johnson, assistant professor of Career Technical Education. Through this collaboration, students at the University level cannot only serve as mentors to the regions, but also partners to high school students.

“Our aspirations here at Eastern are to serve as leadership for high school FFA chapters, provide guidance and support to regional and national competition, and to continue serving the community,” Dr. Johnson explains. The collegiate FFA here at Eastern has not only the benefit of an agriculturally-centered

community, but also a great historical tradition deeply rooted in the motto of the FFA organization.

The ENMU chapter participates in livestock shows and volunteers for judging events in the region. Dr. Johnson adds, “The expectation and vision for the collegiate FFA division here at Eastern is to continue serving and growing as a collaborative and supportive team while leading the way for student success.”

“I enjoy spreading the message of the importance of agriculture to a variety of audiences in the area,” Kassie says.

ENMU Athletics News Women’s Basketball off to Strong Start

After a sweep of in-state rivals New Mexico Highlands, Western New Mexico and Northern New Mexico, the women’s basketball team is ready to open Lone Star Conference play with a 5-5 overall record.

The Hounds feature a balanced offense with five players averaging more than seven points per game. So far the squad has displayed a high-paced offensive attack with an equally intense defensive effort. Through 10 games, Eastern has allowed the opposition just 67.8 points per game and has blocked four shots per contest.

Kassandra Harris has been the team’s top scorer with 9.8 points and 4.5 boards per game. Sarah Stinnett, an All-Lone Star Conference performer from last season, is close behind with 9.5 points per game and a team-high 21 assists. Harris poured in 21 points against NCAA Division II powerhouse Lubbock Christian while Miranda Moore had a 16-point game against Fort Lewis.

Stinnett garnered LSC Defensive Player of the Week after Eastern posted a 63-41 victory at Western New Mexico. She registered three steals and helped ENMU limit the Mustangs to just 30.2 percent from the field. Eastern limited WNMU to just six points in each of the second and third quarters.

After a New Year’s Eve victory over Northern N.M., Eastern will close the home stand with games against Texas Woman’s and Cameron University.

Eastern opens LSC play at home against Cameron University. The LSC schedule should be a tough test for Eastern, as the league sent four teams to the NCAA Tournament last season with Texas A&M-Commerce winning the conference tournament while Tarleton State edged Angelo State for the league crown by a single game. The Texans also reached the Final Four before suffering a four-point loss to Indiana University.

The Hounds are averaging 77 points per game, almost seven points ahead of last season’s average. There has also been a significant improvement in the team’s shooting percentage. John Gilliam is averaging a teamhigh 18.4 points per game and shooting .440 from the field. Lawrence Domingo is pulling down 7.8 rebounds per game.

Fall Teams Earn Postseason Bids and Honors

The fall teams saw plenty of postseason action with the women’s cross country team nearly winning the LSC title and the football team playing in the C.H.A.M.P.S. Heart of Texas Bowl. The bowl bid marked the first time ENMU’s football team reached the postseason during the NCAA era. The women’s cross country team registered their best-ever finish in conference (second) and placed tenth at NCAA Regionals. The volleyball team qualified for the Lone Star Conference tournament for the third straight season.

After winning at least six games for the third straight season, the football team earned postseason play for the first time since the 1983 NAIA playoffs. After facing a 23-7 deficit against Arkansas Tech, the Hounds rallied to within two points before falling by a 51-35 score. Eastern rushed for 248 yards

while Jeremy Burma passed for 255 yards, and Aaron Johnson posted a career-best 146 receiving yards.

The women’s cross country team concluded the best performance in team history with three all-conference performers (Azalia Rodriguez, Amber Saiz, and Klaudia Szych) with Trevor Merhege represented the men’s team. The women’s team came within a single-point of LSC champion Tarleton State at the league championship meet and posted the first second-place finish in team history.

The squad went on to place tenth at regionals.

Szych and Saiz were named to the LSC AllAcademic Team.

The football team had 12 players garner All-LSC honors while Jeremy Buurma was chosen as the league’s Co-Academic Player of the Year. First team choices included Kamal Cass, William Jurek, Elliott Peters and Tanner Hightower Wilson.

For the women’s soccer team, Melissa Moxley and Danielle Caro both earned Second Team All-LSC honors. Moxley was chosen to the All-Tournament team after the Hounds played in a first-round game.

The volleyball team managed to take a set from LSC champion Tarleton State at the tournament with Lauren Frye earning alltournament honors for her efforts. Frye also was named first team all-conference while Andrea Aguilar was chosen second team.

Academic Athletes of the Year for Fall Sports

ENMU Athletic Director Dr. Jeff Geiser has announced the list of the 2015-16 Academic Athletes of the Year for the fall season. Each fall sport (cross country, soccer, football and volleyball) was represented. The six selected athletes each contributed to their respective programs both in competition and in the classroom.

“We are obviously proud of these outstanding student-athletes,” said Geiser.

“They represent everything good in intercollegiate athletics.”

Jeremy Buurma, an accounting and finance major, was chosen as the Lone Star Conference Co-Academic Player of the Year.

He also earned his third straight selection to the LSC All-Academic team and his third selection to the All-LSC Team. The Greyhounds have posted winning seasons in all three years Buurma has started under center. As a senior, he passed for 1,282 yards and eight touchdowns. He also rushed for 450 yards and four touchdowns. He ran for a career-best three touchdowns in a win at Tarleton State and rushed for a career-high 123 yards in a victory over Angelo State.

Courtney Lawson, a psychology major with a minor in communicative disorders, was named to the LSC All-Academic Team, garnering her second such award. The junior outside hitter has also been named to the COSIDA Academic All-District Team.

Lawson finished third on the team in kills with 230 and second on the team in digs with 288. Lawson has the distinct record of having seven double-doubles in one season, more than any other ENMU student-athlete since

2004. She also has the most career doubledoubles since 2004 as well.

Carlos Viveros, a physical education major with a minor in health, was third for the men’s soccer team in goals (4) and points (11) this season. He also tied for second with three assists. Viveros scored the gamewinning goals in the Hounds’ first two games of the season and had a three-point game against Adams State. He also had a goal and assist against NCAA Tournament participant, Midwestern State. Viveros concluded his Greyhound career ranked fourth in points (40), sixth in goals (14), tenth in game-winning goals (3), and tied for fourth in assists (12).

Danielle Caro, a biochemistry major, scored two goals for the women’s soccer team and was third in points with five. She scored in a tie against Lubbock Christian and found the back of the net in a tight game at Texas Woman’s. Caro also had an assist at home against TWU. Her three goals on penalty kicks stand as a team record, as does her four attempts.

Klaudia Szych, a biology major with a minor in premedical sciences, starred as one of Eastern’s top runners during the 2015 season. She garnered All-Lone Star Conference status with a 12th place finish at the championship meet, which helped ENMU come within a single point of the league crown. She followed with a 36th-place performance at the NCAA Division II South Central Regional Championships.

Benjamin Lantz, a biology major with a minor in premedical sciences, registered a strong performance for ENMU at the LSC Championships. He completed the 8k run with a time of 29:30.90.

Class Notes People You Know Updates Galen (MA 73, BS 72) and Christine Farrington (MEd 79, BS 73) have retired after 40 years of service to the Ruidoso educational system. Christine developed Ruidoso’s first elementary bi-lingual program. Galen served as a Category 2 Olympic Cycling Coach from 1984-1996 and produced four professional cyclists. Galen also served as a US Chess Federation coach and received national recognition in the All-American Cup; the New Mexico Chess Organization inducted him into their Hall of Fame.

Elizabeth Betty Nance Smith (BA 77) displayed her art in the first Oil Painters Of America (OPA) Virtuosos exhibition, Salmagundi Club, NY, for Signature and Master Signature painters. OPA promotes representational painting, very fitting for Salmagundi, one of the oldest art organizations in America.

Lt. Col. Brian D. Ray (BUS 97) retired from the New Mexico National Guard in Santa Fe Oct. 13, 2015 after 26 years of active duty service. While attending ENMU, Ray started his career in the U.S. Army by joining the ROTC and the New Mexico National Guard. The National Guard presented Ray with the Meritorious Service Medal and the New Mexico Distinguished Service Medal. Some of Ray’s career highlights include serving in Seoul, Korea as the Missile Defense Officer with the 8th U.S. Army Air and Defense, advising the Iraqui Ministry of Defense in Baghdad, Iraq, as team leader of Army Operation and the Deputy Chief of the Electronic Warfare Division at the Pentagon and his final assignment as the Senior Army Advisor to the New Mexico National Guard in Santa Fe. Brock Ostrander (BS 03) provides scholarships through the Ostrander Scholar Society. The origin of the Society dates to April 1997, and the first scholarship was awarded in 1999. Applications for scholarships through the Ostrander Scholastic Society are available at ostranderscholars.org.

Jennifer Gonzales (BUS 04) is the children’s pastor at Central Christian Church in Portales. Her husband Benito Gonzales (BBA 04) is the human resources director at ENMU. Jacquelyn Madrid Houser (MEd 10, BS 04) leads the Portales WIC Clinic as the WIC nutritionist supervisor.

Billy K. Gaedke Jr. (MEd 89, BS 88, Distinguished Emeritus Faculty) is in his 37th year as PA voice of the Clovis Wildcats and Lady Wildcats. The National Association of Sports Public Address Announcers lists Billy with 4039 announcing events, including football, volleyball, boys and girls basketball, spirit competition, track and field, baseball, and three years of semipro football in the New Mexico Premier League. Billy is a retired Air Force Chief Master Sergeant and began his announcing career while an AFJROTC instructor at Clovis High School.

The Cooperative Council of North Carolina announced the selection of Emily Nail (MBA 13) as its new executive director. Emily previously served as training coordinator for High Plains Federal Credit Union. Prior to this appointment Emily served as branch VP for American Chartered Bank.

Lynnette Roller (MA 93) has returned to ENMU as a new instructor of mathematics. She has a master’s in mathematics from ENMU and a bachelor’s in mathematics from the University of Alaska. Previous to ENMU, she worked at Dulaney High School in Timonium, Maryland, as a math instructor for 17 years. “I have always felt comfortable at Eastern. I like the people here and the size of the university,” she explained.

Stephen Smith (BAAS 14), physician assistant, joined Presbyterian Medical Services at the Farmington Community Health Center. After earning his bachelor’s at ENMU, he earned a master’s degree from Nova Southeastern University in Florida.

Richard A. Schwartz (Faculty), ENMU assistant professor of saxophone and jazz, received a Grammy award nomination for his latest compact disc entitled “Embers: Music for saxophone with piano and electronics.” The world’s largest independent classical label, Centaur Records produced by and released Embers. in February of 2015. Outside of teaching, Schwartz also runs two small music related businesses, a musical contracting company in the New Orleans area and an online publishing company of music educational texts and products he has created and for which he has received three U. S. patents.

Lola Mae Bridges (AA 46) passed away Nov. 9, 2015. She graduated from Clovis High School in 1944, then continued her education at ENMU. She moved to Clovis in 1946 and worked at Farmers Electric Coop. for 8 years.

She then worked at Mason & Jacobs, CPA for 22 years. Lola was also a self-employed bookkeeper for several years.

Robert Widner (BA 57) passed away Sept.

27, 2015. He met his wife Bobbie (BA 50) in 1947 in line to register for classes at ENMU. They married July 18, 1948. Throughout his career he taught in New Mexico, Texas, Missouri and California. After retiring in 1984 he and his wife went to American Samoa for two years to work in a mission school and established the curriculum still used there today. Upon returning home they settled in New Mexico. He was assistant director for New Mexico Aging and Long-Term Services Department for many years.

Robert Rutledge (BA 58) passed away Oct. 8, 2015. Bob served two years in the United States Army in Alaska. Upon graduating from ENMU, he was the Farmington Chamber of Commerce manager, then later worked for Corporation Commission controlling airlines and pipelines. Robert was the right-of-way negotiator at the New Mexico State Highway Department for 30 years, purchasing property for the building and improvement of the roads and highways for the State.

Joseph Charles Higdon (MME 63, BME 60) passed away Oct. 16, 2015. He excelled at playing the tuba, having attained first chair in the Texas All-State Band. He enjoyed a long career in music education teaching numerous award-winning bands at: Gattis Jr. High School, Clovis, NM; Coronado High School, El Paso, TX., Borger High School, Borger, TX., Artesia High School, Artesia, NM and Marshall Jr. High School, Clovis, NM with his final position teaching band at Portales Jr. High, Portales, NM where he and his wife, Barbara Logsdon Higdon (MEd 83, BS 79), retired in 2003 after 28 years of teaching.

Frederick Lewis Sullivan (BA 65) passed away Feb. 24, 2015. He graduated from California College of Law with a Juris Doctor Degree. He was a building inspector and city manager in Perris, CA. He then retired in Quemado, NM. 18

Joel Roderick Price (BS 67) passed away Dec. 11, 2015. He graduated from ENMU and later from Texas Tech University School of Law in 1974. Rod was a member of the US Navy and Navy Reserves leaving the service as a full Lieutenant. As a young attorney, Rod started his law practice with the Childs and Bishop Law Firm in Odessa. He later began working for the Ector County District Attorney as an assistant DA and retired from that position in 2007. A consummate legal wordsmith, Rod was well known for his appellate briefs.

Charles Wayne Vogt (BS 74) passed away Dec. 12, 2015. He taught electronics at Hobbs High School. He moved to Seminole, TX in 1977 where he and his wife owned Curtis Mathis Home Entertainment. The couple moved to Andrews, TX in 1987 where they owned Movies & More for 33 years. They moved to Midland, TX in 2014. He served on the Andrews City Council from 2002-2014 and as finance chairman for the 1910 Loop Project. He was a past board member of the Andrews Chamber of Commerce, Business and Trade Association, Lion’s Club, Senior Citizen Center and Appraisal Board.

Robert Lee Stranathan (MED 76) passed away on Nov. 13, 2015. Bob was a 23-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force, retiring from the rank of Chief Master Sargent. He was a special agent with the U.S. Air Force Office of Special Investigation and was stationed in Germany for multiple tours. After retirement he taught in Clovis Municipal Schools for 16 years before retiring again. He and LaDonna (MEd 74) moved to Lubbock in 1998.

Esperanza Velasquez (BS 77) passed away Nov. 9, 2015.

She earned a degree in education from ENMU. She spent 27 years in school, loving every moment as a teacher.

Sandra “Sue” Salguero, (MEd 84, BS 81) passed away Nov. 7, 2015. In 1974, she began working as a teacher’s aide. After completing her master’s degree in guidance counseling, she became the school counselor for the Portales School District. She retired in 2004. After retirement, Sandra volunteered at the schools. Sandra was active in the St. Helen Catholic Community.

She helped to establish the local Catholic Daughters of America. She was a lector and a Eucharist minister and helped organize the Altar Service Guild for the young people.

Kenneth Lane Grant (BS 86) passed away Oct. 17, 2015. Kenneth was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha. He received a bachelors degree of Science in sociology with a minor in political science. He was also president of the campus organization, KUSH/Black Student Union at ENMU and sang in the Weusi Choir.

Carlos Paiz, (AA 98) passed away Oct. 19, 2015. He served in the US Army in Korea during the Korean Conflict. Carlos farmed and ranched until his death. He was on the Portales School Board for more than 20 years. During that time he served as president and secretary for the board. He also had taken a number of classes in Agriculture and Spanish.
