From the President Dear ENMU Family, Eastern New Mexico University is off to a strong start for the school year. This is the 80th anniversary of the founding of Eastern and we have a lot to celebrate.

First, we celebrate the success of the thousands of graduates (since 1934) who have earned their degrees from ENMU and have accomplished wonderful things in their lives and in their careers. Eastern is proud of them all.

Second, we celebrate the continued growth of our institution. For the 18th consecutive year, ENMU has increased its fall enrollment—5,887 for the 2014 fall semester. We are also grateful that Eastern has been identified in the Almanac of The Chronicle of Higher Education (our “trade” paper) as being the 14th fastest growing comprehensive university in the country from 2002-2012.

Third, we celebrate the fact that ENMU has been able to control its costs better than almost all of our peer universities. In fact, USA Today printed an article on May 24, 2014 that listed Eastern as one of five schools which are among the best “bargains” in the nation. We’ve always known this is true, but it is great to see this recognition on a national level.

Fourth, we celebrate the reopening of the Jack Williamson Liberal Arts Building after a $14,000,000 renovation and prepare for phase one of the renovation of the Golden Library and its conversion into the Golden Student Success Center.

While it will continue to provide all library services, the renovated facility will also house student assistance offices that will help our students graduate. We at Eastern are grateful to the citizens of New Mexico who provided funding for both renovations.

And finally, we reserve our highest level of celebration for our students, faculty and staff. In 1934, it was “the people” who initiated the school that became Eastern New Mexico University. And today, it is “our people” at Eastern who make us one of the best schools in the Southwest.

I thank each of you for your support. Without your generosity, ENMU would not enjoy the momentum we have today.

Stradivari’s Disciple, Don Robertson

E

NMU alumnus Donald Robertson (BME 65) is the largest violin dealer in North America.

“Our big market is in the $50,000 or less range for instrument sales,” says Don. He currently has three violins and three cellos on inventory valued at over half a million dollars per instrument, two violas valued over $100,000 per instrument and two basses valued over $200,000 per instrument. The instruments’ production dates range from the 1600s-1800s. One of the instruments, a cello, is a Stradivarius. Stradivariuses are string family instruments produced by the Stradivari family, most notably Antonio Stradivari.

Antonio Stradivari (1644-1737) produced 1,000 instruments, and 650 of those are in existence today. Don sold a 1689 “Archinto” Cremona cello, one of the 55 to 60 cellos Stradivari made. Wood instrument experts consider Stradivari to be the greatest violin maker of all time. “Of the 12 violas Stradivari made, one is coming up for sale in a sealed bid auction. The starting bid is $45 million—three times record price,” says Don.

He opened the shop in 1971 and says, “at the time, there were one or two shops in Albuquerque that did anything halfway decent with woodwinds, and that was unsatisfactory.” After 26 years in the University of New Mexico vicinity, Don relocated his shop to 3201 Carlisle Boulevard. Not only did Don relocate, but also expand to an 18,000 square foot facility that includes: a recital hall, practice rooms and instrument storage. Robertson & Sons Inc. is one of the few violin shops to repair basses; Don says most violin shops do not have the space to do so. “The biggest influencer on my decision to go into the violin business was my passion for woodworking,” a skill Don says he honed during his formative years by constructing model airplanes.

Don regularly travels internationally to attend auctions and meet with clients interested in selling instruments. “We import a good number of instruments and do most of our sales in the United

States,” Don says. When purchasing instruments, Don notes that provenance, authenticity, condition and tone are key variables for which to look. He spends a good amount of time studying instruments and the more than 20,000 instrument makers as of 2014. Being a good student of his craft allows Don to address fraud, which he says is a factor in the woodwind industry.

Don gave firsthand examples when asked how technology has impacted the woodwind industry. He recently used Computerized Tomography, CT scans, to repair a minor crack near a violin’s sound post that had been created by worms. Don also cited dendrochronology, the study of the width of the growth rings in the top of a spruce. He says dendrochronology will likely debunk many instrument certificates in the years to come. Don added that “if Stradivari had had a band saw, he would have cranked them out like crazy.” Stradivari’s two sons Francesco and Ombono assisted him in instrument production. Similarly, Don’s sons assist him with various facets of the family business from sales to restoration and repair.

Don also studied under cello instructor Arthur Welker. “Several of the students with whom I graduated in 1965 are still in the business in some form or fashion—teachers or performers mostly. We had a really swinging thing going,” Don says.

Don still remembers his other introduction to Portales: during the summers, he used to irrigate the peanut fields. Don has not been back on campus since 1965 and says, “it’s time that I get back.”

Born 30 away from Portales in Muleshoe, Texas, Don’s family relocated to Amarillo when he was young. His grandparents were farmers near Friona, Texas, and his father worked for the Santa Fe Railroad. As a high school student, the Amarillo Symphony tapped Don to join their ranks.

Agriculture Spurs Growth in Enrollment

s ENMU approaches enrollment nearing 6,000 students, dual enrollment has contributed to this significant growth.

Eastern’s dual enrollment program has to offer their students,” says Ms. Kim Lutnesky, coordinator of dual enrollment and continuing education.

Dual enrollment is where high school students enroll in college courses, thereby earning both high school and college credits.

Between 2008 and 2012, the number of students participating in dual enrollment tripled to more than 1,000 students in the fall.

This semester alone, Dr. Chumbley contacted all 104 ag teachers in New Mexico and he now offers courses in over 40 percent of the high schools, reaching 700-800 students a semester.

Statewide, the largest number of courses taken for dual credit is in agriculture.

Dr. “Boot” Chumbley directs the agriculture education program at ENMU. “Dual enrollment has grown each semester thanks to Dr. Chumbely’s efforts to get to know each New Mexico ag teacher personally and to share with them what

with degrees in agricultures. The project focuses on dual enrollment opportunities.

Fifty ag teachers across the state will be offered workshops to facilitate positive interactions with state education agencies and students.

“We have a presence all across the state, not just the Eastern side,” Dr. Chumbley says. “Since 2011 this program has grown 380 percent. This is due to our positive interactions with administrators, counselors, teachers and students across the state.”

“Dr. Chumbley’s efforts have not only grown the ag enrollment program, but have also helped us to grow some of our non-ag programs as well. For example, his efforts in Farmington opened the door for us to be able to offer some of our culinary arts courses on their campus as well,” Lutnesky notes. Family and consumer sciences is another area for possible expansion in dual enrollment.

Q&A with Ebola Expert

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention says the 2014 Ebola outbreak ranks as the largest Ebola outbreak historically and the first to occur in West Africa. Doctors at Texas Health Presbyterian hospital in Dallas, TX reported the first Ebola diagnosis outside of Africa in late September. ENMU alumnus and immunologist Steven Bradfute, Ph.D. (BA 98) works at the University of New Mexico’s Center for Global Health and weighs in on the Ebola Outbreak.

R: Steven, thanks for taking time to catch us up to speed on the Ebola Outbreak. Could you talk a little about how you fit into the Ebola equation?

S: I’m an immunologist, and I study how the body’s immune system reacts to infection or vaccination. Specifically, I am an expert on vaccine development for hemorrhagic fever viruses and how such viruses bypass the immune system to cause disease. Ebola qualifies as a hemorrhagic fever virus. Marburg and Machupo are other ones.

R: What was your reaction when you heard of the Ebola outbreak?

S: “Oh no, this is not good.” What makes Ebola worrisome is the disease’s mortality rate. What exacerbates this is that the infections are occurring in population centers whereas past outbreaks have been confined to remote areas.

It is easier to contain Ebola in remoter areas and harder in densely populated areas.

R: What is your long-term perspective on the Ebola outbreak?

S: It’s going to take a long time and a lot of work to contain this outbreak. There has to be a global, concerted effort to contain the spread of the virus.

R: How did you decide upon ENMU for your undergraduate work?

S: I grew up in Portales and went to Faith Triumphant Christian School, which I loved. I always liked living in Portales. I didn’t feel ready to leave. I really enjoyed my time at ENMU, and I only ended up leaving after graduating because I wanted to obtain a Ph.D. in immunology.

The actor is known for his role as Steven Gomez on the five-time Emmy-winning series “Breaking Bad.” “The show was not bad for me. It was like ‘Breaking Good’ for me,” the Albuquerque father of four said with a laugh.

Steven’s act was presented by the ENMU Department of Multicultural Affairs as the kickoff event for Hispanic Heritage Month.

The show was co-sponsored by the ENMU Theater Department and the ENMU Alumni Association.

“I spent three years as a student at ENMU. It was a great experience with great people and great professors. It was a good introduction to life,” Steven explained. “I learned a lot and increased my skill set. I became a writer, which made my transition to stand-up comedy easier.

Earlier in the day, he visited with digital film and media students, fielding questions and offering industry advice.

“I suggest ENMU to people. You don’t get lost like you do at larger universities. You’re going to get a quality education without

owing a lot of money,” Steven continued.

isa Woods (BUS 94), a lifelong greyhound, was raised blocks from ENMU. Her father, Don Criss, worked on campus at KENW; Lisa was practically raised at ENMU. During childhood, she and her family acted in ENMU productions. In high school, she started playing with the ENMU orchestra. Growing up around ENMU made her college selection easy. “It was a natural thing to be an ENMU student., Lisa explained.

Lisa gives ENMU credit for all of the success she has experienced. “I couldn’t have had a better

After completing her bachelor’s degree, she returned to ENMU to complete a teaching licensure. As a graduate student, she worked at the Child Development Center teaching classes.

“Eastern is about hands-on and actually doing it; not just reading about it,” Lisa exclaimed, “I received a fabulous teaching education. I was so prepared.” After completing the program, she could walk into any classroom confidently, ready to teach.

Lisa and her family lived out of the country for the last six years, traveling with her husband Randy’s job. While living in England for two years, Lisa worked at ACS Cobham International School tutoring, substituting, and helping teach writer’s education. Next, they moved to Africa and lived in Angola’s capitol city, Luanda. Lisa worked at Luanda International School tutoring, substituting, teaching and helping with writing techniques.

She was part of a school performance group

and coached singing. Additionally, Lisa and her family volunteered in a local orphanage.

While abroad, Lisa visited 24 countries. “I was a small town girl that lived in the same town from kindergarten through college. I didn’t think I would move farther than a couple hours away.”

Her experiences taught her that she could live, survive, and thrive in any place.

“Education at Eastern can prepare you to go all around the world,” Lisa said. “It gave me a good foundation.” She feels ENMU was instrumental in shaping who she is, and what she has experienced.

ENMU Celebrates 80 Years of Success 1927: Portales is designated as the site for a new “normal school” to serve the more than 40 percent of the state’s high school graduates who live in eastern New Mexico.

1928: The Chamber of Commerce raises $7,000 to buy 43 acres of land for campus on the west side of town. The money is later repaid by the Board of Regents.

1929: Initial state funding of $62,500 is approved for the first campus building.

1940: To finance their educations, many struggling students bring cows to college. They sell milk to pay their way through school. Other enterprising students raise chickens, sell eggs and rent horses to local citizens.

1941: ENMC awards 41 Bachelor of Arts degrees to members of its first four-year graduating class.

1942: Floyd Golden becomes Eastern’s second president.

1943: During World War II, enrollment drops to 241.

1945­‑46: Enrollment skyrockets as returning veterans continue their educations. Eastern creates housing for 100 married students with surplus buildings from the deactivated Fort Sumner Air Base.

The apartments are known as Vetville.

1949: Eastern begins offering master’s degree programs. The Science Building is completed.

1930: With less than half of the Administration Building complete, the cornerstone is laid. During the Great Depression, the English Tudor building is vacant for three years, except for cattle taking shelter.

1955: The state Legislature approves a name change to Eastern New Mexico University.

1967: ENMU opens its Roswell campus. In Portales, the physical education complex and Bernalillo Hall open their doors to students.

1969: The Eastern Men’s Basketball team wins the NAIA championship in Kansas City, Missouri.

1973: The state Legislature funds an educational television station.

1975: Warren Armstrong is named Eastern’s fifth president.

1983: Robert Matheny becomes ENMU’s sixth president.

1984: Eastern celebrates its 50th anniversary.

1989: Thomas A. Bond is named ENMU president.

1991: ENMU opens an instructional center in Ruidoso.

1991: Everett L. Frost begins his term as Eastern’s eighth president.

1999: ENMU becomes a federally designated Hispanic-Serving Institution.

1934: Eastern New Mexico Junior College opens to 145 students for a six-week summer session.

Students can enroll in two-year programs in teacher education and business. Donald MacKay serves as first president.

2001: Steven Gamble is selected as ninth ENMU president.

2006: Science fiction pioneer Jack Williamson, an ENMU professor for 17 years, dies at age 98 in Portales.

years is a long life for anyone. They are an eternity for a literary magazine.

Editors leave, students graduate and often the money runs out. El Portal was founded in 1939, and although it lived under a different name for several years, it has survived. Under the guidance of new editor Alexandra Itzi, a graduate student in the Department of Languages and Literature, the magazine is now accepting submissions from writers in English from around the world.

The new, 75th anniversary issue reflects the diversity of voices and styles of contemporary literature, with students publishing their work alongside writers from Florida, Hawaii and Russia.

“We’re especially proud of this issue,” says Alexandra, “as it represents a new, bolder future but also contains a grateful nod to the past.” Included is

science fiction great and El Portal benefactor Jack Williamson’s 1928 story, “The Metal Man.” Alexandra has also re-booted the magazine as an outlet for writing about the West, in all its forms and incarnations. West can be a bullet-riddled 1985 Grand Marquis sitting on a front lawn, a gleaming spaceship hovering over Roswell, a cowboy paying his latte with the Amex-card, the dust storm sanding your car, the champagne underneath the Hollywood sign, or green chili-and-cheese burritos from the gas station. West is a geographic location, a dreamscape, a fixture of the mind. “But most importantly,” Alexandra says, “we want to attract the best writing.”

Five Outstanding Alumni Honored at Homecoming Ed Johnson

The student body of the early 80s elected Ed Johnson (MA 86, BS 84) to two consecutive terms as student body president. In his second term, the governor of New Mexico appointed Ed to the New Mexico State Board of Educational Finance. Ed furthered his public service career working on Capitol Hill and with New York City’s youth afterwards. In 1998, Ed began his 15-year tenure of public service for Asbury Park, New Jersey. Ed served as city councilman, chairman of the Urban Enterprise Zone and most recently as Asbury Park’s mayor. Ed transformed Asbury Park into a 21st century community where property values rose from $416 million to $1.2 billion. He is a member of the Zeta Sigma Chapter of the Sigma Chi Fraternity.

Major General David Kee

Retired Major General David Kee (BS 77) participated on ENMU’s swim and football teams and was a member of ROTC. The United States Army commissioned General Kee after graduation; he attended the Quartermaster and Petroleum basic courses along with Airborne school in Fort Lee, Virginia. General Kee’s first overseas assignment was to Zweibruecken, Germany. Afterwards, he served with the Allied Central European Rapid Reaction Corps in Saraajevo, Bosnia from 1996-1997. In 2005, General Kee deployed to Kuwait as the director of CENTCOM’s Deployment and Distribution Operations Center. Following this deployment, General Kee worked as the Joint Chiefs of Staff ’s deputy director for Logistics until his retirement in February 2014.

Loren Nancarrow (posthumously)

After leaving ENMU, Loren Nancarrow (BS 75) worked as an anchorman, reporter and weatherman in San Diego, Calif. He is the recipient of five Emmys, four Golden Mics and won the AP Investigative Reporting Award.

Recognized as Environmentalist of the Year, Loren was a conservationist and environmentalist committed to planetary sustainability. He also co-authored

four organic gardening books with Random House. Doctors diagnosed Loren with stage III terminal brain cancer (Anaplastic Astrocytoma) in early February of 2013. He courageously faced his diagnosis, as Loren created a blog where he wrote about his experience. During this time, Loren also reached out to Scripps Health to setup a healing garden for cancer patients. Loren passed away on Dec. 28, 2013.

Larry Patton

Upon graduation, Larry Patton (BBA 71) went to work for the Comptroller of the Currency as a commissioned national bank examiner and the Regional Director of Corporate Activities; shortly after, Larry began his banking career. In addition to serving as president and Chief Executive Officer of WestStar Bank, Larry has served as president and CEO of several other banks in El Paso. WestStar Bank became and remains the only El Paso based bank to reach $1 billion in assets. SNL ranked WestStar Bank as the “Top Community Bank” in 2010 for banks with $500 million to $5 billion in assets. Larry will serve on the Finance Commission of Texas until 2020.

Berylene Rogers

Berylene Rogers (BA 70) served as the editor-in-chief for the The Chase and worked as a columnist for The Portales News-Tribune. From 19872002, Berylene ran a design firm that evolved into a results-oriented consulting firm focused on public relations and marketing strategies for small but high-end clients. Berylene’s clients included Apple Computers and NASA. Beginning in the early 90s, Berylene began working as a senior technical editor and documentation specialist for Los Alamos National Laboratory, a designation she holds to this day. Established in her field, Berylene has received numerous awards for excellence in scientific publishing and publication relations.

Honorees for 2014 Business of the Year–C&S, Inc.

C&S has been a family business since its beginning by Harry and Alice Cissell in 1930. Originally Cissell Oil, the company was purchased by Alice’s brother Wayne Stratton in 1937 and renamed C&S Oil Co. Wayne’s son Mike Stratton joined the business after graduating from ENMU in 1971. Mike and his wife Marnee purchased C&S in 1997. All of their children have worked for C&S during their high school and college years. The Stratton’s two oldest daughters, Alyssa Idsinga and April Rutter, permanently joined the business in the 1990s. Wayne and Marjorie cared deeply about their community and supported many youth, school and charitable organizations over the years. Mike and Marnee have continued this tradition of giving back to their community and their neighbors. They are proud to be a part of the growth of ENMU, Portales and Roosevelt County over the years and look forward to being a part of the exciting things yet to come in our great community.

Philanthropists of the Year–Richard and Gilley Griffith

In 1957, Richard Griffith (MBA 67) purchased a Portales grocery store and renamed it Food Town. Two years later, he built the Sand’s Shopping Center and was off and running on his next career. He started S.O.S. Waste Management business with Dan Field, Marshall Stinnett and Gary Regner. All these businesses have kept Richard and his wife Gilley focused and attentive to their communities.

Besides generously supporting ENMU students and recently the ENMU Stadium, Richard and Gilley have also given back to the residents of Tulia, Texas with the donation of a city park named after General Mackenzie as well as Tule Creek Park.

The couple also generously donated a movie theatre to the community of Tulia. The recent lead gift to the stadium was made in honor of Richard’s longtime friend and business partner, Dan Field. Richard and Gilley believe in honesty, integrity and compassion for others. Both agree it is important to lead a life of learning and to help others.

Volunteer of the Year–Rose Robbins

Throughout her career, Rose Robbins (BS 81) made it a habit to help others. She served for 25 years in Corporate Communications and Event Marketing for Texas Instruments and Radio Shack, where she was a trusted advisor to C-level executive leadership. After her marriage to Gary Robbins and her return to Portales, Rose has volunteered as a member and leader in Eastern Athletic Club, Main Street, Chamber of Commerce, Military Affairs Committee and Catholic Daughters. Rose is also very committed as a Zia Mom for ENMU Women’s Basketball and Volleyball. Besides being willing to roll up her sleeves and take on sometimes unglamorous and time-consuming volunteer duties, Rose is most proud of being able to share her career wisdom with and interact with college students. “I want ENMU students to understand that where there is a will, there is a way,” Rose says. “Opening their eyes to even more career opportunities and providing the kind of encouragement I received is very rewarding. It complements what they are learning in class at ENMU.”

Reading Expert Honored

O

ne of the leading experts in reading and literacy is being inducted into the ENMU College of Education and Technology Educator Hall of Fame.

Dr. Gay Su Pinnell (BA 66) earned her undergraduate degree at ENMU before earning advanced degrees in reading education at Ohio State University.

“I am glad that I grew up in a small town and then spent the first four years of higher education there as well. Eastern offered a familiar environment with new ideas that helped me grow and change. I left well prepared for anything big I would encounter,” comments Dr. Pinnell.

“The Eastern faculty members were supportive and student-oriented. They took personal responsibility for high quality teaching,” Dr. Pinnell says. “When I later became a college teacher, I drew from many good models.”

Dr. Pinnell has extensive experience in

classroom teaching and field-based research, and has developed and implemented comprehensive approaches to literacy education. She was instrumental in bringing Reading Recovery to the United States and has devoted herself to supporting its expansion. “Every child needs excellent teaching, year after year. Excellent education depends on good teaching; and it is, or should be, a national priority,” Dr. Pinnell states.

Dr. Pinnell received the International Reading Association’s Albert J. Harris Award for research in reading difficulties. She received the Charles A. Dana Foundation Award, given for pioneering contributions in the fields of health and education. She is a member of the Reading Hall of Fame.

Her passion for reading research and pedagogy has resulted in a profusion of publications focused on supporting teachers and students in literacy development. She has co-authored

many publications on reading, writing, creative thinking and professional development for teachers.

“Preparing teachers was a high priority at Eastern and it remains so today. It’s interesting to think of the sweeping impact that Eastern graduates have had on children over the years.

C

lint Ramsey (MS 66, BA 60) dedicated his career to coaching student athletes.

He spent 13 of those years coaching track at South Plains College (SPC) for which he is being recognized at the National Junior College Cross Country Championship in November.

Coach Ramsey will be inducted into the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Hall of Fame.

A native West Texan, Clint began his relationship with South Plains College in 1969 when he accepted the head track and field coaching position following a successful six years at Portales High School as the track and football coach.

While at South Plains, Clint coached dozens of NJCAA AllAmericans as well as several national champions and record holders.

His teams twice finished as NJCAA runner-up and Clint was chosen NJCAA Track and Field Coach of the Meet in 1979 and 1981. One of his former SPC athletes had never run before joining the college team, but went on to be an Olympian in 1984 as an intermediate hurdler. The athlete earned two national titles while running for Coach Ramsey.

A former Greyhound, Clint played basketball for ENMU from 19561959 under Coach Al Garten, with one year as conference champions.

After his years at SPC, Clint worked at Texas Tech for nine years full-time, and 16 years part-time, as the head of athletic counseling for student athletes.

Today, living in Lubbock, Clint volunteers at the high school regional track meets and the Big Twelve Conference. When not volunteering, you’ll see Clint at most of the Greyhound home football games. He is also very involved with 30 other retired coaches in the “Old Coaches Society.” The Lubbock group chips in and purchases sports equipment for underprivileged children, and they donate to Buckner Shoes.

Dan Franks, Thief and Lawman

E

nglish writer Ben Jonson commented about fellow playwright William Shakespeare that “he was not of an age but for all time!” The same could be said about ENMU alumnus Dan Franks (BS 75). Dan high-jumped for ENMU’s Outdoor Track team in 1974, a team led by Coach Bill Silverberg that won the National Championship that year. A Communication Disorders major, Dan practiced audiology, a career field projected to

have 34 percent growth from 2012-2022. Dan is also a lifetime artist, describing himself as a student of Realism.

His latest artistic endeavor is that of reenactment in his residence of Chama, New Mexico. Dan vacillates between ‘lawman’ and ‘robber’ but for a good cause. “The tourism that the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad brings to Chama during the summer is vital,” says Dan. In 2013, the National Park Service designated this railroad with

National Historic Landmark status. The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad arrived in Chama in 1880, and summer reenactments commemorate the arrival. “Believe it or not, some of our biggest fans are Japanese Western clubs,” says Dan. Before coming to ENMU, Dan was accustomed to ‘The Cowboy Way’, having herded cattle in his home state of California.

Dan’s grandparents migrated to California from Oklahoma, “similar to the Joads in Steinbeck’s Grapes of Wrath,” Dan says. He notes that members of his reenactment troupe, the Rio Arriba Stuntmen Association, really go all out in their costumes—but “I’m the only one who wears spurs.”

Undergrad Paints the Town

Jacob hopes to complete his fourth mural in time for December graduation. Located in the Mainstreet parking lot, the mural depicts the partnership between Portales and ENMU on one wall, emphasizing agriculture, commerce and education. The second wall represents Jacob’s Native American culture while simultaneously weaving imagery of Portales, Clovis and Cannon Air Force Base into the composition.

Jacobs says that the complete mural will also look ahead to the future.

Jacob embraces the past too; he is a member of Tódik’ǫzhi, the Salt Water clan. Jacob grew up on the Ramah Navajo Reservation, which is an hour south of Gallup, New Mexico near the Zuni Pueblo. He is the Director of Native American Affairs at ENMU and says that “Eastern has been the biggest gift of my life. I’ve made a family here. Eastern is my new home.”

lumna Debralynn Soza (BS 11) directs Portales Mainstreet, an organization dedicated to revitalizing the core of Portales.

Debralynn prioritized art as a part of that revitalization, commissioning the services of future alumnus Jacob Lee (BS 14).

Jacob’s three murals along the Floyd Highway caught the eye of Portales Mainstreet. The first one features two faces and the second hummingbirds buttressed by the term ‘Hope’. The third mural also features a hummingbird along with the term ‘Faith’; it sits on the wall of Quality Sales, a local discount store.

ENMU Athletics News Continuing Success on the Gridiron and in the Arena Although it will be difficult for the ENMU football and rodeo programs to duplicate the success experienced last year, both expect a strong season in the coming year. The football team is fresh off its second-ever Lone Star Conference championship and the first since the 1991 season. After opening 2013 with a 1-3 record, the Hounds closed with the longest running win streak in the conference, claimed the Wagon Wheel game, a win over Midwestern and a share of the LSC crown with a win at Texas A&M-Commerce.

With 17 starters returning and over 30 newcomers, the Hounds are set to charge the field for the 2014 season with depth.

Coach Josh Lynn (MS 07, BS 03) and staff have adopted a motto for their student-athletes that translates to a way of life. Lynn preaches having a “Count On Me” attitude to his men.

There are three facets to “Count On Me.” Greyhound football players are expected to “Count On Me” academically, “Count On Me” to be a productive member of society, and “Count On Me” on the football field. “‘Count On Me’ is like a three-legged stool. You cannot have 14

success in one without having success in the other two,” Lynn said. He believes that life lessons also translate to the athletic field.

The women’s rodeo team also put together a magical season with eight first-place finishes in 11 rodeos and never finished lower than third. The squad earned their first regional title since the 1992 season and claimed the Southwest Region title by a wide margin over Tarleton State. At the College National Finals, Hayden Segelke-Todd

won the national title in goat tying, while Logan Medlin successfully defended his national championship in the team roping. The duo represented the ENMU athletic department as the Greatest Zia and Greatest Greyhound for the 201314 academic year.

By Sara Hill and Adam Pitterman fourth year. Collaboratively the ENMU Foundation, Alumni Association, Athletics Department and the Eastern Athletic Club held several functions over the weekend. A welcome reception was held at the ENMU host hotel, the DFW Marriott South, right outside of Arlington. On Saturday, fans gathered for a big send off at the team’s hotel. The team marched through a tunnel of the spirit squad, friends, family and alumni while en route to AT&T Stadium. Fans were hosted at a pregame party in the stadium field level club, Club Lite. They were able to watch pregame from field level and while mixing and mingling with other ENMU fans. The Hounds and Mustangs were the fourth and final game of the day at AT&T Stadium with kickoff set for 8:00 p.m.

Additions to the Team The ENMU Department of Athletics is kicking off the 2014-15 seasons with a number of coaches either in their first or second seasons at the school. This fall, former Greyhound/Zia standouts Tyler Hart (BBA 11) and Danielle Jones-Kcholi (MS 13, BS 11) will enter their first seasons as head coaches.

Hart, a former Greyhound soccer player will take the reins from his former

mentor Harold Muñoz. Hart hails from Toronto, Canada. He received his undergraduate degree from ENMU in business administration and is currently working on his MBA. Jones-Kcholi, a former cross country and track and field athlete, will guide those programs.

Although entering her first season, she served as the women’s cross country interim coach a couple seasons ago.

Jones-Kcholi is a native of Albuquerque and received both her undergraduate and graduate degrees in health and physical education from ENMU. She also adds another ENMU alumnus to the staff with her assistant and former teammate, Colton Coleman (BUS 13).

Omar Morales, a long-time assistant coach at West Texas A&M, enters his first season as the head coach of the Zias and made an impressive exhibition debut at ENMU Soccer Field. Morales is a native of the El Paso area and brings not only his collegiate experience to the table, but also club experience.

Stott Carter, the longtime Greyhound basketball assistant will enter 2014-15 as the interim head coach and look to continue the recent success the program has had. Carter joined the Greyhound staff in 2009 with former head coach Andrew Helton at the helm. He brings continuity to a young team.

Georgia “Marie” (Boyles) Porter (BA 59) celebrated her 90th birthday in March. She taught for Roswell Independent School District for 27 years, retiring in 1986. She has 18 great grandchildren and 11 greatgreat grandchildren.

Dimas Chavez (BA 60) finished a manuscript of his memoirs titled, On My Own, in which he dedicates a significant amount to his time at ENMU. The manuscript is available for viewing or purchase through Amazon.

Otha Britton (BS 67) received his master’s and doctorate degrees in mathematics/computer science from Drexel University, and then taught at the University of Mississippi and University of Tennessee at Martin as the director of computer services, earning professor emeritus status in 2001. He now volunteers in his community.

Barry C. Smith (MA 68, BS 67) worked in psychology for over 50 years. He now lives in Oregon, plays trumpet in several local bands, and volunteers work for the police department. Dennis Michael Kulvicki (BS 67) has been the president of the State of Texas Anniversary Remembrance Day Foundation for the last 15 years. He is also

the lead storyteller and author of The First Pioneers and Leaders of the State of Texas Hall of Honor and Library.

Barry Bonessi (BS 69) is the vice president at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishers in NYC. Barry and his wife have four children and four grandchildren.

Abdullah Almohanna (BBA 87) recently celebrated his two-year anniversary as vice president and partner of Sanib Business Consulting, located in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Dr. Michael “Doc” Crudder (MED 95) has been selected as an Outstanding Adjunct Faculty member at Rio Salado College. He is also an award-winning principal and has been an educational administrator for over 22 years.

Barra Reynolds (MA 96, BA 94) has traveled around the world for the past few years as a volunteer for Earthwatch. She worked on archeological sites in England and Italy, and spent two weeks in China working with great pandas. She works for the College Board, and serves as a Senior Director for State and Policy Initiatives.

Alejandra Miralles (BS 98) recently completed a book signing for her second book, Written with my Father, in the south Spain city of Alicante, near the Mediterranean Sea. She is currently working on her third book.

Tiffany Williams (BS 99) was heavily involved at KENW as student. She now works in Charlotte, NC as a Graphic Designer for NBC affiliate, WCNC. Allan Crawford (BS 01) was recently hired at KENW to work on “Creative Living” and serve as the News Director for News 3 New Mexico. He spent the last 12 years doing freelance production work.

Amber Hamilton (MA 03, BS 01) is working as the County Manager for Roosevelt County.

Draco Miller (MS 06, BS 04) and Deedy Miller welcomed their daughter Dailyn Miller on Sept. 27.

Tanner (BS 09) and Ysabel (MEd 13, BS 09) Nygren recently celebrated five years of marriage. Tanner works for the Department of Interior as a Natural Resource Specialist and Ysabel teaches first grade.

Nancy Alvarado (BUS 12) received national recognition through the Commission on Adult Basic Education as the Outstanding Teacher of the Year. She works for the ENMURoswell Adult Basic Education where she teaches English as a Second Language and is an instructor of the New Mexico Youth Challenge Academy. Nancy also received the Chaves County Teacher of Character Silver Award in 2009.

Jennifer Morrison (BA 13) landed an internship at Rikers Island Correctional Facility in East Elmhurst, NY. Jennifer expects to graduate with an MA in Forensic Psychology in 2015 from the John Jay College of Criminal Justice.

Greg McFarland (BS 14), former ENMU basketball player, is now working in the marketing department for Roosevelt General Hospital. He and the marketing team have started the Behavioral Health and Substance Abuse Program.

Dustin Seifert (ENMU Department of Music Chair and Director of Bands) was recognized as the Educator of the Year by the New Mexico Education Association.

He will be receive the award in January during the All-State Music Festival.

In Memory 40s

J.B. Hendrix (Attended 39-40) passed Aug. 11. Born in Clovis in 1921, J.B. was the 2nd generation of eastern New Mexico homesteaders. After graduating high school he attended ENMU. In 1941 he left ENMU to work as a railroad machinist apprentice. When WWII began, railway workers were exempt from military service due to the vital national security of the railroads, but by May of 1943, he could no longer remain on the sidelines and chose to enlist in the U.S. Navy. Upon his discharge, J.B. returned to work for the railroad for a successful 40-year career.

Herbert Eugene Bergstrom (BA 46) passed away Aug. 1.

After graduating high school, he moved to Portales and worked on a farm and at a laundromat. At 26 years old he felt called to ministry. He began his college education at ENMU and pastoring at Mt. Zion Baptist Church near Dora, NM. After graduating from ENMU, he attended Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He later received his Doctorate in Theology from Southern Theological Seminary. He returned to ENMU as a Visiting Professor in Religion from 1953 to 1960.

James Rook Reed (MA 57, BME 55) passed away July 6 at 84 years of age. After graduating high school in 1948, he attended ENMU, majoring in music until he was drafted into the US 18

Army in 1951. In the Army he joined the U.S. Army band. After his discharge, he returned to ENMU to finish his degree in instrumental music. For 32 years he taught band and English in Lovington, NM. After his retirement, he moved to Texas where he was band director and English teacher until his second retirement in 2009. He was loved by his students, and he kept up with many of them throughout his life. Central Junior High Band Building in Lovington, NM was renamed the Rook Reed Band Building in his honor.

Mary Marcella (Sanders) Hillock (BS 61) passed away Aug. 15. She was a graduate of Melrose High School and ENMU. She married Roland T. Hillock (BS 62) who preceded her in death.

Jerry Joe Blakely (MA 62, BA 62) passed away July 1. He attended ENMU on a football scholarship and was the recipient of the Hardest Running Back Award and the Most Valuable Player award. He began his coaching career in Clovis, NM in 1962. Throughout his coaching career in New Mexico and Texas, he earned many awards and served on the board of directors and All-Star Committee of the Texas High School Coaches Association. In the summer of 1986, he became the Superintendent of Schools for Littlefield Independent School District, a position he served in for the last 28 years.

Barbara Mae Burrage (BA 62) passed away Aug. 21, after an extended illness.

After graduating from ENMU, she taught for 32 years before retiring.

Retirement was short

lived, as Barbara once again found her way to teaching.

Terry Brown (BA 62) passed away Aug. 17, after a brief illness. After graduating from Portales High School, he continued his education at ENMU. Terry then went into the family business with his father as an electrician at Brown and Son Electric.

Bettye Jean (Cook) Willoughby (BA 62) passed away July 4. On a break from attending Southern Nazarene University, she met and fell in love with James Eldridge Willoughby who had just returned from WWII. They settled and farmed in Field, NM, and after their children were in school, Betty finished her degree at ENMU and began teaching. She retired from Melrose Public Schools after 26 years and was inducted into the New Mexico Teachers Hall of Fame.

Dr. W. “Bill” Paul Jones (MA 63, BA 61) passed away July 26.

After earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees at ENMU, he earned an Ed.D. in counseling from New Mexico State University. At the time of his death, he was a respected professor and mentor at the University of Nevada Las Vegas in the College of Education, a position he had held since 1987. He also held state psychologist licenses in Nevada and New Mexico and was a fellow in the National Academy of Neuropsychology. He had numerous articles in professional journals and authored/co-authored textbooks in his field. Prior to moving to Las Vegas, he worked as a research psychologist for IBM and held faculty and administrative positions at NMSU-Alamogordo.

Ron Cameron (MA 68, BS 66) passed away Jan. 14 as a result of Parkinson’s complications. After graduating from ENMU, he taught psychology at a

In Memory community college in Arizona, before becoming a school psychologist in California. At ENMU he met and married Roberta Thurman (BS 70) who majored in speech therapy.

Nina Jo Hale Grimshaw (MEd 68, BS 53) passed away June 28. She began her college studies at ENMU in 1945. After two years, she started working full-time for the Employment Security Commission of New Mexico. By 1949, Nina Jo had become one of the highest paid stenographers in the state with little chance for further advancement. She decided to go back to ENMU. She completed her degree in vocational home economics and began teaching. She took a break from teaching to raise her two children when they were young, but returned to teach in several schools around New Mexico. She retired in 1989, after 29 years of teaching in the state of New Mexico.

Sally Ann Bourbeau Brown (MS 69) passed away Aug. 6 at the age of 85. Sally earned degrees in elementary education and art from Eastern Washington State University. Later earned her master’s from ENMU, specializing in teaching the deaf. Sally was a teacher in the Portland Regional Program for the Deaf and was the program’s supervisor at the time of her retirement in 1989. In retirement she was very active in her community and also traveled extensively.

Leslie V. Langston (MA 70, BA 68) passed away May 1, 2012. He served his country in WWII in the US Navy and attended Texas Tech University and ENMU in the late 40s. He worked in the oil industry for 13 years before returning to ENMU to complete his education. He taught in the Vocational Department of ENMU-Roswell and

became supervisor of all Voc-Tech programs, and chairman of the Oilfeild Training Program. He resigned in 1983 and taught in Egypt and New Zealand.

He then returned to Roswell and taught part-time until he was 80 years old.

Mark Nero (BS 70) passed away in late spring 2014. Mark was an artist, designer, letterpress printer and teacher.

He and his wife Marilyn (BS 69) lived in Seattle, WA for 25 years before returning to New Mexico where he taught graphic design and book arts at New Mexico State University.

Eleanor Kay Rheam Leh (MEd 72, BS 65) passed away July 30.

She was an elementary school teacher for more than 35 years in Clovis, touching the lives of more than 875.

She retired in 2004.

Loren Nancarrow (BS 75) passed away Dec. 28, 2013. Loren courageously faced stage III terminal brain cancer. He served the community of San Diego, CA as an anchorman, weatherman and reporter for over 30 years. He garnered 5 Emmys, 4 Golden Mics and won the AP Investigative Reporting Award. Loren was an accomplished and well-respected conservationist too. Loren was honored posthumously with the Outstanding Alumni Award this year (see Page 9).

Reverend Larry Lee Hastings (BA 76) passed away April 5.

He graduated from Northmont High School where he was an honor student, class officer, AFS

exchange student to Germany, and on the cross country team. He started the school’s first ecology club on Earth Day. He was active in his church and was an Eagle Scout, Order of the Arrow. He attended Ohio State University and graduated from ENMU with degrees in Library Science and Religious Studies.

He graduated with an M.Div. from Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, VA. He attended the University of Virginia Ph.D. program, studying Biomedical Ethics. He had a lifelong career as a Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) Minister. Throughout his life of service to others, he helped found the Madison Emergency Services Association, led the Charlottesville Mental Health Association, and was an on-call chaplain at Martha Jefferson Hospital.

Moises Richard Gomez, Jr. (BS 77) passed away July 20. After he graduated from ENMU with a degree in education, he taught sixth grade history for a few years before making a career switch to sales and management.

David Alan Brouillette (AS 89) passed away Feb. 12. He graduated high school in 1985 with high honors in the top six percent of his class of over 200 students, making the drill team in the four-year ROTC Program. After earning an associate degree in electronics from ENMU, he earned his BS in Electrical Engineering Tech from New Mexico State University. Prior to his death, David was a journeyman electrician.

Johnathan Raydale Dawson (BS 96) passed away June 21 at just 43 years of age. He was a member of City of Refuge COGIC, and First Church of God in Christ where he served as the worship leader, choir director and lay minister.
