Putting New Mexico First

By Marysa Cordova

Heather Balas (BA 91) is the president of New Mexico First, a public policy organization, based out of Albuquerque. The statewide nonprofit organization was co-founded by U.S. Senators Jeff Bingaman and Pete Domenici. Heather said, “We help the people of New Mexico understand and offer policy recommendations on the most important issues facing our state. That includes education, health care, water, the environment and the economy.”

Hather’s workday consists of research and, in part, managing the statewide board of directors. Currently she is completing a report on STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) education in New Mexico. “Not enough New Mexico students are getting degrees in those areas, and as a result our state must work hard to make sure today’s young people have the skills they will need for future careers that will rely on technology.”

Heather comes from a family of ENMU alumni. “I’m pretty sure that my mom and I are the only mother and daughter who both edited The Chase,” said Heather. Glenda Balas (MBA 89, BS 75), was an editor for the student newspaper, The Chase, in the 70s, and Heather did the same in the 90s.

At ENMU Heather majored in journalism and minored in music. She gained lifelong friendships and appreciated her instructors, especially Dr. David Gerig, Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities, and Dr. Sue Strickler, Professor of Political Science.

Heather also met her husband, Joe Wellborn (BFA 90), at ENMU. He was a graphic design major and was active in student government. They spent twelve years away from New Mexico after graduation. After the birth of their second child in 2004 they decided to move back to New Mexico to live closer to family.

When asked how she felt about ENMU, Heather stated, “I gained solid, transferable career skills in writing, researching and critical thinking. These skills have been essential to every job I’ve had.” Heather said she believes that the development of transferable skills, including writing, is essential to the modern workplace. She urges the students attending ENMU today to develop as many skills as possible to give them the capacity to do any number of jobs.
