Alumna Enjoys Success Abroad
By Robert Graham
ENMU alumna Camala Beek (BA 10) works for ITMS Marketing in Bad Nauheim, Germany as a marketing communications specialist and copywriter. Camala says, “In general, I primarily work for Dahon, the world’s leader in folding bikes.” She writes press releases, works with design teams to create handbooks, brochures, catalogs and advertisements as well as conceiving complete marketing strategies and campaigns. Camala also oversees communication with all Dahon distributors and monitors their online presence.
One of her favorite projects is the complete re-launch of a company’s brand accompanied by its first-ever global advertising campaign, “Express Your Personality.” Camala says, “I was a part of the campaign from concept, design, pitch, hiring of models, photographer, stylist, makeup artist, shooting studio ... and then creating slogans for each of the 12 different characters.” The project coincided with Eurobike, the world’s largest trade show.
As a high school student, Camala’s family hosted an exchange student from Cologne, Germany, which she says inspired her to try out the German market. Originally from Cheyenne Wells, Colorado, Camala remembers receiving a postcard from ENMU Enrollment Services as a high school senior. Interested in Division II volleyball, she contacted former ENMU volleyball coach Mike Maguire and joined Eastern’s volleyball team. She currently participates in a professional amateur volleyball league in Germany.
Camala applied for an internship with ITMS shortly after graduating from ENMU in the fall of 2010. She notes, “I applied not thinking much about it and was surprised to hear back from the company.” The company asked Camala to come on full-time after her one-year internship expired.
Through work, Camala formed a core group of friends with whom she travels frequently. Already, she has visited Croatia, Netherlands, France, Italy, Spain, Hungary, Switzerland, Bulgaria and Czech Republic. Her 2013 travel itinerary includes Amsterdam; Ibiza; Greece; London; Paris; and Hannover, Germany.
Before relocating to Bad Nauheim, Germany, Camala gained valuable academic training and work experience. She majored in Communications, Public Relations emphasis and completed a PR internship in ENMU Communication Services. Camala says, “The people and professors at ENMU seemed to take a personal interest in my education and future plans.” In a sense, Camala’s ‘success’ bridges the spaces not just between Portales and Bad Nauheim, but also between her ENMU degree and the global workforce.
