FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear ENMU Family, August always brings the energy and excitement of students, staff and faculty returning to campus. We happily say, “Welcome back!”

Summer was a whirlwind – registering students, moving faculty, labs and equipment from Roosevelt Science Center to a temporary home in Eddy Hall during Roosevelt’s renovation, and preparing for the G.O. Bond campaign. For 2022’s G.O. Bond, ENMU will seek $9 million to replace our 1948-era Student Academic Services building with a new student services building. I hope our students can count on the support of New Mexico voters in November!

In May, more than 665 students graduated and 430 graduates walked across the stage in a packed Greyhound Arena. We learned that ENMU received $2 million in funding for education majors to support them during their student teaching semester – an excellent benefit to students. ENMU’s TRIO program Upward Bound, a fixture on our campus since the 1970s, was re-funded for five more years, a credit to its staff’s successful mentoring of students from 6th grade into college.

Also in May, ENMU celebrated the gift of a beautifully renovated Casa del Sol, donated by distinguished alumna Dr. Gay Su Pinnell. Already our partner in improving the Child Development Center and funding a co-teaching project with ENMU and Portales Schools, Dr. Pinnell’s donation adds a stunning venue for educational meetings, workshops, social gatherings, and accommodations for special campus guests.

This summer, President Ryan Trosper and ENMU-Ruidoso acquired the rest of their building at Sierra Mall to expand their beautiful facility into hosting classes, workforce programs, and community events for Ruidoso, the Mescalero Apache community, and Lincoln County.

Under President Shawn Powell, ENMU-Roswell achieved 10-year accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission and garnered glowing endorsements for its programs and personnel.

On the Portales campus, a committee of campus and community members continues its search for the next president of ENMUPortales and the System chancellor.

Eastern’s best days are ahead, led by dedicated Regents, a solid administrative team, and committed faculty and staff. It’s been my honor to serve as president, and I appreciate the support from alumni, the ENMU Alumni Association, ENMU Foundation, the campus, and the community I’ve received. I can’t wait to see the Eastern you will build in the coming days.

Finch, who earned a bachelor’s degree in science in 2013 and a master’s in curriculum and instruction in 2018 from ENMU, chairs the district Science Department in Loving. He is also a football and track coach and created the Falcon Strong program for students on the field and in the classroom.

Miranda Earns National Presidential Award

One might think, after earning many prestigious teaching awards in the space of four years, that Silvia Miranda (BAE 04) would be used to the accolades.

The project earning her the award was born out of necessity. Her school – Mesa Elementary in Clovis, New Mexico – was still reeling from COVID-19 regulations and shutdowns.

“I was trying to teach multiplication, but all the students could talk about was the restrictions on the playground during recess due to the pandemic,” Silvia said.

“No, it doesn’t get old,” Silvia said after earning her latest honor, the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST). “It was a rigorous application process, and I’m always honored to be named.”

So, she did what all good instructors do. She turned the inconvenience into a teachable moment.

“We worked to create a COVID-safe playground using multiplication strategies, as well as addition and subtraction of multi-digit numbers,” Silvia said. “All the students were into it because now math was relatable to their world and life!”

The PAEMST award is one of many Silvia has received in her career. She was a National Science Teaching Association (NSTA) Shell Science Teaching Award finalist in 2020, won an Intel/Golden Apple STEM Teacher Grant in 2019, and was a 2018 New Mexico Teacher of the Year finalist and 2018 Clovis Teacher of the Year.

Silvia was also honored by the Milken Family Foundation with a $25,000 grant in 2018. Fellow ENMU alum Tyler Finch (MED 15, BS 12) of Loving, New Mexico, also won this award in April of this year (see page 8), and Silvia was happy to be present for his ceremony at Loving High School.

Silvia began her career in Clovis as a kindergarten teacher and was a fourth-grade teacher at Mesa Elementary for eight years before becoming a reading specialist at Mesa and James Bickley elementary schools. She collaborates with principals, teachers and other reading specialists to craft the best strategies to teach and inspire students to love reading.

“I wanted a position that would allow me to make an impact beyond the classroom,” Silvia said. “I love helping teachers and have learned so much from observing and coaching others.

“It’s gratifying to see students excited about learning and getting to see them grow with their knowledge,” she added.

Silvia said earning the PAEMST award should inspire others who may face obstacles and challenges when trying to achieve their goals. She was also quick to point out her family’s support.

“My husband and two daughters have supported me and been my biggest cheerleaders throughout my educational journey,” Silvia said. “I hope I can inspire kids – especially minority girls – to follow their passion for science, technology, engineering and math.”

While Silvia was presented the PAEMST award – and the $10,000 prize that goes with it – during a virtual ceremony in February, she was able to travel to Washington, D.C., in May to receive the honor in person. Federal educational administrators and other award winners were there applauding her career success.

Right after returning from Washington, Silvia was back on another flight to Los Angeles, California, where she presented for the Milken Educator Awards forum and met with other Milken award winners.

With all this hob-nobbing with the higher echelon of education in the nation, does Silvia have any new career plans?

“As an educator, you can lead within the walls of the classroom and make a huge difference,” she said. “Kids are my passion, and I’m not ready to move on to a different role.

“That said, my ultimate goal is to be a published children’s book author, but that’s a way down the road,” Silvia added.

“First, I want to do something that elevates minority voices and promotes a growth mindset. Anything is possible.”

From Farm Kid to Millionaire

Ed Foreman (attended), an elected politician for two states, successful oilman and motivational speaker, died Feb. 2, 2022, leaving a colorful career and a lifetime of stories for future generations to tell and re-tell.

Ed was best known as a Representative in Texas and New Mexico, serving as representative for the El Paso, Texas area from 1962–1964 and southern New Mexico in Las Cruces from 1969-1971.

As a petroleum engineer, he developed a technique for drilling wells safer, faster and more efficiently. Ed became financially independent and was elected to the U.S. Congress, first from Texas, then from New Mexico, becoming the only person to be elected to the U.S. Congress from two different states in more than 150 years.

Before his political career, Ed was a millionaire as the head of Foreman Oil, Inc. in the late 1950s, following a career working for various oil and gas-related companies in the Permian Basin and had served in the U.S. Navy, U.S. Navy Reserve and U.S. Air Force Reserve.

Though Ed had a successful early career, he was proud of his accomplishments as a motivational speaker over the last 50 years.

“I know how some of you are feeling right now,” Ed stated during a seminar in 2014. “You’re thinking, if this guy’s been elected to the United States Congress from two different states, doing all this politicking with five different presidents and all this business, I guess we’re going to be exposed to a bunch of politics here today, aren’t we?

“No, I’ve gone straight, and I work for a living now,” he stated, immediately putting the crowd at ease.

Ed grew up on a sweet potato and peanut farm in Portales. He attended ENMU for two years before transferring to NMSU to earn a degree in civil engineering. Ed held an honorary Doctorate of Letters degree from NMSU and is a member of the Council of Peers Award for Excellence Speaker Hall of Fame.

Once he left politics in 1976, he focused on motivational training and keynote speaking, sharing the ability to master business and political communications.

Because of their generous support to Eastern over the years, Ed and his wife, Barbara, were named Philanthropists of the Year by the ENMU Foundation.

The president of the ENMU Foundation, Stephen Doerr (BS 77), presented the award at the 2012 Homecoming Awards Breakfast.

“We prefer to give to organizations that truly help people to help themselves,” Ed said. “Giving back is good for the people where we live and have lived.”

Hound Twins are Animal Experts

Working with exotic animals and possibly saving an endangered species is just part of the lives Jason (BS 99) and Jenifer Chatfield (attended) lead. They’ve dedicated most of their lives to doing what they love most, helping animals.

The siblings, now living in Florida, obtained their love of animals while living and working on a small farm near San Marcos, Texas, and later attended ENMU on athletic scholarships. Jason played basketball while Jenifer played volleyball. As an undergrad, Jenifer began her veterinary career by volunteering at the Hillcrest Park Zoo in Clovis, New Mexico, the second-largest zoological park in the state behind the ABQ BioPark Zoo in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Jenifer, who remarked the Clovis Zoo had some “fascinating animals,” would later in her career work as an inspector to help re-certify the ABQ BioPark Zoo. That was one of many exciting jobs and posts Jenifer would hold in her veterinary career, which commenced after earning a degree from Texas A&M University’s College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences.

Since then, she has owned emergency vet offices, been awarded gold stars for contributing to veterinary medicine by the Florida Veterinary Medical Association, and currently serves on numerous veterinary boards. These include the National Veterinary Response Team, the advisory board for PetVet Magazine, and the associate editor of the Journal of the Zoo and Wildlife Medicine. She is also a Medical Reserve Corps member. It’s a career that has taken her to locations as exotic as the rainforests of Madagascar and across more familiar land like the Texas Hill Country.

After graduation from veterinary school at Texas A&M, Jason rotated through some of the country’s most prestigious captive wildlife collections, including the San Diego Zoo in San Diego, California. He was the director of the Center for Tropical Ungulates, watching over an extensive group of rhinoceros, giraffes, warthogs and many endangered species. He eventually landed his dream job working for the White Oak Conservation Center in Yulee, Florida.

“Chats with the Chatfields,” described by the twins as “35 to 45 minutes of pure ‘edutainment,’” launched in February 2021 and can be heard at chatfieldshow.com. It’s also available through their YouTube channel and on streaming services such as Apple, iTunes, Spotify and Stitcher.

“At first, I thought, ‘what?’ But our first podcast was about working with family, something many people can relate to,” Jason said. “It’s fun to do, and we try to create a podcast with a broad appeal, from professional veterinarians to first-time puppy owners.

“Looking back, I can’t see myself doing anything else,” Jason said of his career.

“I think I’m most proud of the certification from the pet industry,” Jenifer adds. “The board of directors for Partners In Animal Care & Compassion (PACC) awarded that to me for continuing PACC education. We’re trying to bridge the gap between vets, pet owners, and the general public. We very much wanted to be accepted by the pet care industry.”

Jenifer became a pet care expert when she ran an emergency veterinary clinic, caring for various animals.

“I watched after antelope, oryx, rhinos, giraffes, any animals for which zoos could not provide space or time to breed them properly,” Jason said. “It was the job you hope to get after 25 years in the field, not right out of vet school!”

“Medicine is medicine, whether you care for rhinos, horses or dogs. Antelopes are basically cows with fancy horns,” Jenifer said.

“We are interested in all types of animals, and I think it makes us better doctors.”

Most recently, Jason was vice president of zoological operations at Jungle Island in Miami, Florida, where he spent 15 years.

Even though their podcast has become popular, extending to guest appearances on other shows, Jenifer still struggles with nervousness.

At Jungle Island, his duties ranged from approving place settings for fancy dinners to ensuring animals’ health. Things came to an end in 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic shut the facility down

“Of course, I am nervous every week,” Jenifer insists. “If you are not nervous, you are not challenging yourself to do new things!”

Roberto is a principal electronics technologist at Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, New Mexico, working alongside “brilliant individuals” from across the globe to bring new electronic concepts to life.

Born in Belen, New Mexico, to parents who were not fluent in English, he had a difficult upbringing, learning English while attending elementary school in Portales, New Mexico. His work ethic began at home, where money was tight and everyone was expected to do their part.

From a first-generation college graduate to an “irreplaceable” team member on the frontier of electronic technology, Roberto Jimenez (BS 10) is leaving his mark on the world.

A Greyhound on the Cutting Edge

“I grew up in a small home full of family members that loved one another,” Roberto said. “It never felt like we lacked anything, as long as we had each other.”

He began schooling at Clovis Community College, where he discovered his love for electronics. He later enrolled at ENMU to continue studying in the electronics engineering technology program.

From there, the sky was the limit. Roberto worked two jobs to finance his bachelor’s degree at ENMU, then went to work in his field and eventually earned his position at Sandia National Laboratories. There, he helps enhance the nation’s security.

“I’m inspired to work with new cutting-edge technology that can one day revolutionize the way we do things in the future,” he said. “After all, who wouldn’t want to work at the same place where Albert Einstein left his legacy for those after him to expand on his efforts?”

ENMU Professor Creates Symphonic Magic It was in October of 2019 when PARMA Recordings approached Mark Dal Porto (faculty) to compose a short orchestral fanfare for the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO). No stranger to symphonic composition, Mark humbly accepted the offer.

The result is “Bucolic Celebration,” depicting a commemoration and salutation of the joys of country life in the United Kingdom.

“It begins with several playful statements in the woodwinds meant to evoke pastoral images and feelings from the listener,” Mark said. “It then gradually increases in volume, energy and speed with more dynamic statements from brass, strings and percussion, ending in a virtuoso and whirlwind display of delight, pleasure and exultation.”

“Bucolic Celebration” is one of many pieces composed by 11 composers from around the world who were contacted to participate in this project. The final edit is set for a CD release in October 2022.

Mark has eight works recorded by PARMA Recordings available to the public, including the piece “Romance for Oboe and Piano,” recorded by Mark at the piano and his wife, Tracy Carr (faculty) on oboe.

Mark didn’t need to travel to London for the rehearsals or recording. Instead, he met with the production team, symphony conductor and musicians online to work on tempo, pitch, rhythm and other musical concerns. The recording was postponed many times due to the COVID-19 pandemic before the LSO finally recorded the piece in February.

Gannon and Manyweather named Greatest Greyhounds Seniors Jasmine Gannon (BS 21) and Justin Manyweather (BS 21) earned the Female and Male Greatest Greyhounds titles for the 2021-22 athletic season.

Justin, a member of the ENMU football team, is the 77th Male Greatest Greyhound and Jasmine, of women’s volleyball, is the 42nd Female Greatest Greyhound in the university’s history.

Jasmine capped off a four-season career with the Greyhounds as the team’s leader on offense and defense in 2021. Jasmine is the first volleyball student-athlete to receive the honor since Lauryn Frye won the award in 2016 and 2017. In 2021, the Clovis, New Mexico native led the Greyhounds squad in kills per set, points per set and digs. The outside hitter also posted 27 service aces, 0.28 service aces per set and 2.76 digs per set

The Greatest Greyhound awards date back to 1940-41 on the men’s side and 1978-79 on the women’s side, honoring student-athletes displaying the highest degree of athletic achievement, academic success, leadership qualities, community involvement and positive representation of Eastern New Mexico University. ENMU head coaches and administrative staff vote on the award.

In the LSC, Jasmine finished the 2021 season as one of the top offensive players in the conference, earning All-LSC Second team. In her career, she has been awarded several honors from the Lone Star Conference, named to the All-LSC First Team and All-Academic Team in 2018, the All-Tournament team in 2018 and 2021, and landed on the LSC Commissioner’s Honor Roll seven times.

Over four seasons, Jasmine totaled 112 games in a Greyhound uniform, playing in 423 sets. Offensively, she notched 1,175 kills with 2.78 kills per set, adding 55 service aces, totaling 1,314.0 points and 3.11 points per set. On the defensive side, Jasmine collected 794 digs and held 1.88 digs per set. In 2021, she recorded their best season for hitting percentage, assists, service aces, digs, digs per set, and blocks per set.

Justin ended his Greyhound career with a phenomenal season as Eastern’s leading receiver and kick returner. The Los Angeles, California native paced the Hounds with a season-high 751 receiving yards, 11 receiving touchdowns, and 48 receptions. As a returner, he picked up 322 kick-return yards with one kickoff-return touchdown and 131 punt-return yards. Justin also hauled in more than 100 receiving yards in four games, including a career-best 246 yards and 15 catches against Western New Mexico, when he was named Lone Star Conference (LSC) Offensive Player of the Week for his efforts for the conference office.

During the 2021 season, Justin set several single-game and season records at ENMU, including single-game records for receptions, receiving yards and touchdowns. His 11 touchdowns in 2021 are the third-most in a single season and the most by an ENMU receiver since 1985.

Football Season Tickets Now Available The ENMU Greyhound football team begins its home slate on Sept. 10 against reigning Lone Star Conference (LSC) champions Midwestern State on Military Appreciation Night. A complete listing of all games can be found at GoEasternAthletics.com.

Seat options at Greyhound Stadium include the brand new Dawg Houze Bar and Runnerz Cantina VIP tent ($253), reserved chair back seating ($125), reserved bucket seats ($100), “In The Game” tickets ($75), lower level reserved seats ($75), premium bleacher tickets ($50), and ADA seats ($50).

All tickets are available throughout the season, with season tickets sold on a first-come, first-served basis. “In The Game” tickets are a new experience seated in the lower level section and come with a concession credit to each game (minimum of two tickets purchased).

Additionally, ENMU is providing military members complimentary reserved seating.

ENMU SAAC Holds First Annual Greyhound Gala

Eastern New Mexico University’s Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) held its first annual Greyhound Gala in April to honor and recognize ENMU student-athletes. Six students earned individual awards and one team earned a Team Cup award.

Spencer Roach (ENMU Baseball) claimed Male Athlete of the Year after having an impressive start to the 2022 season. Spencer was recognized this season as the Lone Star Conference (LSC) Hitter of the Week and the National College Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) South Central Hitter of the Week.

Malethabo Seema (BS 22, ENMU Cross Country and Track & Field) took home Female Athlete of the Year. Malethabo finished in the top 30 for the 2021 LSC Cross Country Championship and competed in the 2021 NCAA South Central Regional.

Tamia Smith (ENMU Track & Field) was named Sophomore of the Year after holding the top five marks in the shot put for program history.

Mikaela Garvin (ENMU Volleyball) picked up Freshman Athlete of the Year after a tremendous first year with the team. Mikaela was named LSC Freshman of the Year and was selected to the All-LSC Freshman team.

She was also named LSC Offensive Player of the Week.

Kelvin Kipkemboi (ENMU Cross Country) earned Junior Athlete of the Year. Kelvin boasted a 10th place finish at the 2021 LSC Championships and the performance earned All-Conference recognition and LSC Newcomer of the Year.

Rae Sapiga (BSW 22, ENMU Volleyball) is the Senior Athlete of the Year. Rae led the team in assists, assists per set and service aces.

She was named LSC Setter of the Week after a combined 57 assists against Texas A&MInternational and Texas A&M-Kingsville.

The ENMU Team Cup, determined by the number of ENMU student-athletes that attended other teams’ games, was awarded to the Greyhound softball team.

Joe Ford (BA 50) looks sharp in his letterman’s sweater from his days of playing football for Eastern. Joe was a freshman in 1946 and was part of the school’s efforts to restart the football team after a two-year hiatus due to World War II. He was also on the basketball team and played under legendary coach Al Garten. After graduating, Joe taught in Aztec, New Mexico, for three years but found real estate to be his true calling.

He enjoyed a successful career in Aztec and Bayfield, Colorado, where he continues to live. He still wears his letterman’s sweater on cold Colorado nights.

Charles Molinari (BAAS 14) was recently promoted to Associate Dean at Central New Mexico Community College (CNM) in the School of Health, Wellness and Public Safety. Charles assists the dean in providing organizational and administrative leadership, directing activities dealing with criminal justice, human services, public safety dispatch and the CNM Law Enforcement Academy.

Sylva Pearce Compton (MA 58, BA 47) died June 2, 2022. In December of 2021, Sylva recently celebrated her 100th birthday with the dedication of the Sylva Pearce Compton Percussion Room in the Music Building.

50s

Rodney Toon (BS 55) died Jan. 11, 2022.

Rodney served in the U.S. Army for a short time, then worked in the energy management laboratory at Holloman Air Force Base near Alamogordo, New Mexico. He retired after 33 years in 1987.

Janie (Elliot) Moberly (AA 55) died May 13, 2022. Janie and her late husband, Dr. Jacob Moberly (BS 55), were tireless promoters of Eastern as members of the ENMU Alumni Association and Friends of Eastern (now the ENMU Foundation) for many years. Janie also served as an ENMU Regent for 12 years.

She was named with her husband Jacob as Volunteers of the Year by the ENMU Foundation in 2019.

Harold Snider (BA 55) died June 11, 2022. Harold served with the New Mexico National Guard for three years, working full-time for the Army and Air Force components of the NMHG. In 1961, Harold began his career in the medical field, eventually serving in various accounting positions for three medical facilities before retiring in 1989 and moving to Lake Placid, Florida.

James Allen Kyte (MED 77, BA 62) died May 3, 2022. James served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. After graduating from ENMU, he moved his young family to Amarillo, Texas, where he taught aircraft mechanics at the Amarillo Air Force Base.

He also worked at air bases in Biloxi, Mississippi, Alamogordo and Clovis, New Mexico, before retiring from civil service in 1988.

Lois Jerilyn Thornton (BA 64) died April 19, 2022. Jerilyn was a public school teacher from 1964 to 1983, later serving with Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) in Los Alamos, New Mexico, where she worked until retiring in 2007.

José Griego (BS 69) died May 7, 2022. José dedicated more than 20 years to education as a teacher, coach, diagnostician, counselor and principal. He also served the local community and attended ENMU games.

70s

Wilma Ploudre (BA 56) died March 4, 2022. After teaching in Farmington, New Mexico, and Elkhart, Kansas, Wilma moved to Clovis, New Mexico, where she taught third grade for 32 years and remained as a part-time substitute teacher for another 20 years after officially retiring from full-time teaching.

Paul Turpen (MA 70) died May 8, 2022. After serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II aboard the USS Grand Canyon, Paul was honorably discharged as Seaman First Class in 1946. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas.

He later obtained his Master’s degree from ENMU, where he was a professor of English and Humanities until his retirement in 1989.

Dr. David Townsend (MA 58, BA 56) died March 21, 2022. Dr. Townsend served in Korea with the United States Marine Corps before finishing his degree and commencing a career teaching history at Alamogordo High School and New Mexico State University-Alamogordo.

John Paolino (BBA 73) died April 3, 2022. John worked on the Navajo Reservation and became a health and safety professional for the Federal Aviation Administration from 1997 until his retirement in 2013.

Miriam L. Deen (MA 58) died April 27, 2022.

Miriam had a 54-year career teaching English in Santa Fe, Floyd and Portales, New Mexico, and at Northern Arizona University, University of Arizona and ENMU. Marcia Cole (MA 60, BA 53) died May 26, 2022. Marcia had a long education career, teaching reading, literature and creative writing in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Farwell, Texas, retiring in 1995.

Bill Hensley (BA 61) died May 14, 2022. Bill worked in the banking industry, eventually becoming a vice president at Merrill Lynch while working in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and El Paso and Dallas, Texas, before retiring. In his late 70s, he took up running and became an avid marathon runner, participating in triathlons.

Marion Charlotte Austin (MED 73, BS 72) died Feb. 18, 2022. Marion had a long career as a reading professor at San Antonio College in San Antonio, Texas. She was also the creator and director of the school’s technology center, instructional innovation center and help desk. Marion also served as the school’s first director of instructional technologies, helping educators integrate technology when teaching.

Raymond Lee Reid (BBA 73) died March 26, 2022. He worked for more than 50 years in the beef and pork industry and built a reputation for excellent steaks and ribs grilled at his home.

Bill Gallegos (BBA 74) died March 20, 2022. Bill was the first person ever at ENMU to earn a degree in feed log management. He spent his life as a cattle broker in Logan, Clovis, Tucumcari and Belen, New Mexico, traveling across the U.S. and some foreign countries for his profession.

Paul “Marty” Dale (BS 75) died April 10, 2022. Marty was a long-time physical education teacher and high school track and field coach with the Harbor Creek School District in Harborcreek, Pennsylvania. In his 41-year career, he coached middle school football and high school basketball, volleyball and football.

80s Joy Ellen Armstrong (MA 80, BS 76) died March 23, 2022. Joy was an attendance officer for Clovis Schools in Clovis, New Mexico, and later was a social worker for the State of New Mexico’s Children, Youth and Families Department. She was also appointed ombudsman for New Mexico Adult Protective Services.

Richard Foy (MBA 82) died May 19, 2022. Richard had a long and successful career in the real estate and mortgage industry and was an active Rotarian in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Peggy Kizer (BS 84) died Feb. 26, 2022. Peggy worked as a teletypist at newspapers in Abilene and Odessa, Texas, and Pensacola, Florida. She taught high school for several years before resigning to drive semi-trucks across the country, finally retiring at 68.

Terry Moberly (attended) died June 21, 2022. Terry and his wife Mary Jo opened Moberly Moving and Storage in 1976, serving the Clovis, New Mexico, community for several decades.

Jody Stowe (BBA 85) died April 18, 2022.

Jody worked in the food industry as a salesman, eventually working up to food broker, and worked for U.S. Foods for 26 years before retiring in 2018.

Billy Roy Smith (MA 88) died April 3, 2022.

Billy taught English and coached basketball and track at Portales Junior High in Portales, New Mexico, from 1985–1988. He was also employed by the National Spirit Group in Dallas, Texas, from 1989–1994 and was on the “Body Rock” dance troupe, which appeared on the Star Search TV program in 1991. He had a 29-year career in cheer and dance coaching, including owning Spirit Celebration, before selling it in 2017. He also worked for Southwest Airlines from 1995–2005.

90s Robin (Haase) Billmaier (MA 94, BS 90) died June 19, 2022. Robin was a speech pathologist and founder of the West Side Speech Academy in Albuquerque, New Mexico. As a member of the New Mexico Speech Language and Hearing Association, she received honors for her work in the association in 2002.

Leslie Hartsell (BS 91) died April 11, 2022. Leslie had a 26-year career with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service as a fishery biologist, retiring in March 2020.

Maria Angelica Sisneros (BS 97) died April 23, 2022. Maria was employed with the State of New Mexico Human Services Department for 20 years.

Rachel (Kruse) Dashnaw (BA 98) died Jan. 13, 2022. In addition to being a doting mother, Rachel was the director of calendars for calendarclub.co.uk for 21 years.

2000s Adilene Adame (MS 20, BS 18) died May 21, 2022. Adilene was ENMU Student Body President in 2019. After earning her Masters degree, she was a coach and assistant special education teacher at Friona independent school district in Friona, Texas.

Dr. Art Welker (faculty) died June 11, 2022.

Hired at Eastern as a music professor in 1964, Art served ENMU for 25 years before retiring in 1989 as an Assistant Professor Emeritus of Music. During his time at Eastern, he helped to form the University Symphony League, now known as University Friends of Music, which hosts an annual Pops Concert each fall and supports music students at ENMU through scholarships and fundraising. He helped establish children’s concerts for public schools and the Cultural Affairs Guest Artists Series at Eastern.
