From the President Dear Greyhound Nation, 2019 is off to an impressive start. Our men’s and women’s basketball teams both qualified for the Lone Star Tournament for the second year in a row, and the women’s team is currently ranked sixth in the region – hopefully setting us up for inclusion in the NCAA tournament. Our softball team, under new coach Kira Zeiter, has started well, and our men’s and women’s indoor track & field season produced a number of school records.

For more good news, the long (60-day) 2019 legislative session is proving to be very generous to ENMU. As I write, the budget is being debated on the House floor. After HB2 (the budget bill) is approved by the House, it will go to the Senate where we hope that higher education in general and ENMU, specifically, will be treated favorably. The budget as currently drafted includes the following: • A 2% increase in new money for ENMU, which would provide us with $746,000 in new, recurring state appropriated funds • A 4% salary increase for our faculty and staff • $197,500 for ENMU Athletics (a replacement of funds previously removed) • $139,400 in instructional and general funding for our Dual Enrollment Program (offered to high school students earning credit toward their high school diploma and a college degree) • $111,000 in new funding for KENW None of our success at the legislature would have been possible without the guidance and support of our eastern New Mexico legislators, especially, Sen. Stuart Ingle, Sen. Pat Woods, Sen. Gay Kernan, Sen. Greg Fulfer, Sen. Craig Brandt and Sen. Jim Burt, as well as Rep. Randy Crowder and Rep. Phelps Anderson. Additionally, we have multiple legislative sponsors for our $3.012 million capital outlay funding requests from the Severance Tax Bonds. These include replacing the roof at Greyhound Arena, installing a Blue Light Emergency system on campus, upgrading our infrastructure by adding swipe card systems for academic buildings, as well as repaving, repairing sidewalks and installing additional lighting around campus.

We graduated 543 students in December 2018, ENMU’s largest ever Fall Commencement. Our new graduates are the reason we exist: to help students realize their dreams and to create the future leaders for our state, our country and our world.

YEAR-OLD ALUMNA

RETURNS TO CAMPUS

By: Rachel Forrester More than 70 years after first stepping foot on campus, Sylva Pearce Compton (MA 58, BA 47) walked through the doors of Quay Hall and her memories came flooding back. The 97-year-old Greyhound calmly and intently made her way through the hallway, noting that she continues to dream about her days as a coed. Back then, Quay Hall was called the “Women’s Hall” and Sylva, her sister and two other students pushed all of their beds into one room to use the other as their own personal common area.

Things on campus have changed quite a bit since then; the rooms in Quay Hall are now used for offices, and there are multiple newly renovated buildings including the Music Building and the Golden Student Success Center, both of which Sylva was able to tour. While she walked through the Administration Building, a portrait of Sylva’s relative C.M. Compton Jr., one of ENMU’s founders, watched over her.

“I loved it. I absolutely loved it,” Sylva expressed about her tour. “As a student, I spent a lot of time in the music room but I had never seen Buchanan Hall. So that was fantastic for me since Gillian Buchanan was my favorite professor.”

Sylva also spent some time in ENMU Special Collections, flipping through the yellowing pages of past issues of The Chase, lighting up each time she recognized a person or a fond memory. Sylva became a Greyhound in 1941.

She joined the Kappa Delta Alpha sorority and really enjoyed her classes with Dr. P.M. Bailey who chaired the ENMU Speech Department for many years. When asked about her studies, Sylva candidly explained that she majored in “fun.”

Sylva left Eastern temporarily when she married Benjamin Lee Compton in 1943.

She enlisted into the Women’s Army Corps, but returned to school two years later when she and Ben had their first child, their daughter Carol. Sylva recalled this period of her life, stating with gratitude, “There were times that former ENMU President Floyd Golden actually took care of Carol so I could focus on my studies.

Carol played while he tried to get work done. Bless his heart. He was precious to me,” Sylva remembered of Dr. Golden.

After earning her bachelor’s, master’s and multiple teaching accreditations from ENMU, Sylva continued to feed her passion by teaching elementary and junior high music classes for 25 years in Clovis. She also had a son, Steve, who now resides in San Angelo, Texas, and she also spent a year teaching in Taiwan.

Sylva cherishes her time singing with ENMU’s vocal quartet and playing drums in band. She returned to campus for a second visit this past November to attend ENMU’s annual POPS Concert where she enjoyed the performances by the ENMU Wind Symphony and especially the Swanee Singers, an all-girls group this year.

“I was very glad to be able to meet Mrs. Compton and hear some about her Eastern experiences,” said ENMU Director of Choral Activities Dr. Jason Paulk.

“My hope is that she is able to continue to be involved in some of the exciting things happening in the Music Department and on campus.”

1969 Men’s Basketball 50-Year Reunion This past February, men from the 1969 championship-winning ENMU basketball team gathered to celebrate their 50-year reunion. The night was full of memories with teammates reuniting from the “Harry Miller era” to celebrate their

Class Notes People You Know Paula Paul (BA 60) most recently authored “The Mind of a Deviant Woman,” which was published this past summer. Paula has written around 35 books, which have included gothics, cozy mysteries, children’s books, young adult and literary novels.

In October 2018, Jack Batson (MED 76, BS 71) competed in the Huntsman World Senior Games in St. George, Utah. He and his tennis partner earned the silver medal in tennis doubles for their age group, and Jack earned the gold medal in basketball hot shot. This was his third year competing.

John Tigert (MS 77, BS 68) is the head coach for the Carlsbad Cavegirls softball team, and has been for a total of 25 years (from 1980-99, 2006-09 and 2015-present). George Garro (BBA 72), branch manager of the Colorado Springs Raymond James office, was recently awarded the 2018 Western Division Branch Manager of the Year award. These awards are given to just two of more than 245 complex and branch managers in the Raymond James & Associates system.

Delana Clements Michaels (BS 72) recently co-starred in “Being Rose,” a film released on Netflix in January. Delana played a character named Lena, who is star Cybill Shepherd’s bowling buddy in the movie. Delana has worked in the film and television industry for more than 40 years, with credits in “Murder, She Wrote,” “Roseanne,” “In Plain Sight,” and “Breaking Bad.” Keep an eye out for her as Doris in “Messiah,” coming soon on Netflix.

Donna (Rickstrew) Hylton (BS 73) lives in Bakersfield, California, and owns Hylton Fundraising Consulting. For 28 years, she has worked with non-profit companies on fundraising, corporate development, marketing and more. She produced the local Jerry Lewis Telethon that raised over $1 million for the Muscular Dystrophy Association and also plays a huge role in planning the annual Read for Life Gala and Auction that has raised over $1 million for the Kern Literacy Council.

After graduating, he worked at Pro Express Trucking and later at R&L Carriers until his retirement in 2008. Bill was very active with the Boy Scouts of America for almost 65 years.
