From the President Dear Greyhound Nation, Eastern New Mexico University is moving upward and onward as we enter the new year. We are truly blessed to have exceptional students and dedicated faculty, staff, alumni and supporters.

2018-19 Highlights: • Eastern’s enrollment continues to stay consistent. The 6,015 students enrolled for fall 2018 is the second highest ever, behind 2017’s 6,027. Since 2001, the institution’s enrollment has increased by an astonishing 68 percent – the 21st highest enrollment increase in the country.

• Our retention rate continues to be strong, currently at 62.4 percent. While this is still a work in progress, we believe that with renewed focus and vigor and the Greyhound Connection program, we will see this climb to 70 percent during the next few years.

• The beautiful, new Golden Student Success Center is now open, will enhance the traditional functions of the library, and will help promote and ensure “student success.”

• Inside the Golden Student Success Center is another success, Einstein’s Bros. Bagels, which does tremendous business day in and day out. Einstein’s allows students yet another high quality option for on-campus dining.

• For the second year in a row, I had the honor of standing in Kimbrough Memorial Stadium in Canyon, Texas watching the Greyhounds storm the hill to claim the Wagon Wheel (the fifth win in the last six years!) This year was total domination with a final score of 28-0.

• U.S. News & World Report recently ranked ENMU highly in two very important categories. We are #25 in the nation among regional comprehensive universities in the “lowest debt upon graduation” and #10 in the nation among all schools for “lowest out-of-state tuition.”

• Finally, ENMU continues an 85-year tradition of providing an excellent educational experience to our students. This is our mission, and we look forward to continued success.

I wish you the best in the coming year. I think 2019 will be a very good year for ENMU, and I thank all of you for your loyalty and support of Eastern New Mexico University.

Rudy shared that he was a Vietnam veteran and his dream was to be a lawyer because “a lot of people can’t speak for themselves.”

It was not until he was researching for an opinion he was writing on eminent domain that Ed learned his grandparents did have a lawyer to fight the state’s taking of their property.

Their case ended up before the New Mexico Supreme Court – not once, but twice – because the state appealed. Ed felt better knowing they did have proper representation in court to fight the government, and said, “it was remarkable to be able to

Memories of all of Ed’s hard work in helping his grandparents make the ranch livable came rushing back, and he wondered what it would have been like if his grandparents had been able to hire a lawyer to speak on their behalf. It was that very night that young Ed Chavez decided to become a lawyer.

The next day, he introduced himself to Ross Sanchez, who taught business law at ENMU and later became a district court judge in Bernalillo County. From that day forward, Mr. Sanchez took an interest in Ed and gave him opportunities to learn about law in and out of the classroom. Former District Attorneys David William “Bill” Bonem and Fred T. Hensley (BA 60) also inspired Ed as he observed them in court. He continued to take all the law courses ENMU had to offer, even though they weren’t required for his business administration degree.

After graduating from ENMU, Ed earned his Juris Doctor from UNM School of Law and went on to have a 23-year career in private practice. Ed recalled the law school challenges he faced,

“I attribute my success to Eastern,” acknowledged Ed. “ENMU laid the foundation for my career and was the perfect size for me to succeed. I would have been lost at a larger institution.”

ENMU honored Ed in 2008 with the Outstanding Alumni Award, and this past October, the UNM School of Law honored Ed with their Distinguished Achievement Award. He was also elected to be a Fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers and the International Academy of Trial Lawyers.

In retirement, Ed volunteers as chair of the statewide Criminal Justice and Public Safety Task Force, established by the legislature to recommend improvements to the criminal justice system that will promote safety throughout the state. Ed retired in hopes of finding ways to give back to his community, and he is grateful for the opportunity to work with the task force.

But retirement is not all volunteer work. Ed stated, “I’m looking forward to spending more time with the best thing in my life – my wife, Sandra – traveling more and visiting our children and eight grandchildren. I also plan to hike the Alps with my oldest son next year.”

The ENMU Foundation and ENMU Alumni Affairs officially inducted these honorees at the 43rd annual ENMU Foundation Homecoming Breakfast in October.

BUSINESS OF THE YEAR

Since its conception 42 years ago, the Christian House Foundation has been a faithful supporter of ENMU. Chartered in 1976 by the state of New Mexico, the foundation’s purpose was to receive and administer property, endowments, trust funds and gifts for purposes of furthering Christian education on a non-denominational basis at ENMU. By providing scholarships for students and furthering the development of the Christian Campus House located adjacent to the main ENMU campus in Portales, the foundation has positively affected the educational experience for hundreds of students.

In 2006, when ENMU alumna Jean Hall (MED 75, BME 75, BS 70) passed away, in her will, she remembered the Christian House Foundation with a generous gift in memory of her beloved father, E.C. Luna. She asked that the Christian House Foundation use these funds to continue providing scholarships for deserving ENMU students. Many people contributed to this fund to help grow the campus ministry and scholarship offerings. Then, in December 2017, the Christian House Foundation board of directors transferred these assets to the ENMU Foundation

Ron became ENMU’s very first All-American football player and was also one of Eastern’s top tennis players with a Texas Conference championship in both singles and doubles play. In 1984, ENMU Athletics held their first Hall of Honors banquet, and they inducted Ron

Golf Tournament nine years ago. He has volunteered for the event every year since, and helped raise more than $300,000 for alumni scholarships.

Mr. Othick has also served on the ENMU Board of Regents since 2015, for which he served as president and vice president. More recently, he spent a significant amount of time and work as the chair of the search committee for ENMU’s current president, Dr. Jeff Elwell.

DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD Dr. Lonnie Alexander (BS 78) came to ENMU in 1972 to study agriculture. He graduated from the University of New Mexico School of Medicine in 1982 and completed his family practice residency from the University of Colorado. He returned to Portales in 1986 to take over for his friend and local family physician at the time, Dr. Robert Coleman.

Over the next 12 years, Dr. Alexander became the iconic and beloved doctor of the Roosevelt County communities. He truly was a family physician. From the delivery of babies and care of women before, during and after their pregnancies, to the care of children, teenagers, men, and the elderly, Dr. Alexander was reliable and steadfast. In 1997 he turned his career to focus on women’s health and joined Women’s Medical Center where he practiced until his retirement in 2017.

When asked what advice he would give to today’s medical students, Dr. Alexander stated, “Take full advantage of every educational opportunity. I felt like the degree that I got at Eastern prepared me very well for medical school. I applied in 1978 along with four other students from ENMU. All five of us were accepted, and all five of us had productive medical careers.”

HONORARY LIFETIME AWARD Dr. Patrice Caldwell began her academic career at ENMU in 1980 … and never left. Serving as assistant professor and director of Freshman Composition from 1980-84, she chaired the department of Languages and Literature from 1984-88. In 1988, after a national search, she became dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. When ENMU received the prestigious Pew Leadership Award for Institutional Renewal in 1997, she became the director of that grant, which launched ENMU’s Freshman Seminar and substantially enhanced campus technology.

The next year, she moved to the Office of Planning and Analysis, where she continued her work with grants, strategic planning and institutional data. This August, her title changed to Vice President for Planning, Analysis and Governmental Relations, and she became ENMU Chief of Staff. As a faculty member, she happily taught grammar, writing and literature courses, Women’s Studies and – her favorite – Victorian literature to ENMU students.

Dr. Caldwell received the Presidential Award for Teaching Excellence in 1986. Her happiest teaching memories are team-teaching creative writing and science fiction with Dr. Jack Williamson. She has been a board member for the ENMU Friends of Music since 1997, and has served as their president for the past 17 years. She also actively supports the arts on campus and is also a loyal attendee during ENMU Athletics and student activities.

MIKE SMARTNICK

OUTSTANDING ALUMNI AWARD While attending ENMU, Mike Smartnick (BA 83) took his father’s advice and enrolled in his first computer programming class, which led him to his 35-year career in information technology. He began his career working in the University Computer Center, as well as through several energy industry internships. These experiences were the beginning of his love affair with technology. Mike’s wife would tell you that he has had a “square-headed girlfriend” (e.g. the computer) for the entirety of their 34-year marriage.

Upon graduating, Mike worked as a programmer taking on assignments in the engineering and operational fields, while also adding skills to his business information systems background. He also continued his education at Webster University where he earned his master’s with emphasis in computer resource management.

The vast majority of Mike’s career has been spent working in the energy sector. He has worked alongside people who set industry standards for safety through automation and for companies who care about environmental and energy conservation. He has been able to contribute to these efforts with a solid educational foundation.

Greyhound Receives

It’s Feb. 11, 2017, and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has selected three engineers from Lectrosonics wireless technology company as the winners of an Academy Award for Technical Achievement.

“And the Oscar goes to” … ENMU alumnus David Bundy (AA 71), along with his Lectrosonics colleagues David Thomas and Lawrence E. Fisher. The three engineers are responsible for developing, designing and manufacturing Lectrosonics’ digital hybrid wireless microphone system, used in the vast majority of American films, television and news productions. The Rio Rancho-based company’s wireless microphone technology has become the industry standard over the past 15 years. The award, presented during the Technical Achievement Academy Awards

“It was neat being honored in Beverly Hills, but designing new products is the most rewarding,” acknowledged Dave, who finds it gratifying to solve design issues and improve system features for better customer experiences.

After earning his degree in industrial arts, Dave started working on two-way radios at shops in Clovis and Roswell before landing a test technician position with Lectrosonics.

His productivity was faster than his counterparts, and before long, Dave was finding a significant number of engineering design errors. In just two years, he moved to the engineering department where the alumnus found his niche using his problem-solving and engineering design skills.

“It’s interesting to watch the news and spot our devices in use,” Dave said. Lectrosonics devices are also used in Broadway shows like “Frozen” and “Lion King,” and their waterproof equipment is used in Cirque du Soleil shows, Sea World performances and even on surfers in major competitions. Their wireless devices are used by musicians including Carlos Santana, Pearl Jam, Ricky Martin, John Fogerty, Slash, Stevie Young with AC/DC and more.

“The only negative feedback we’ve received from our customers is that the actresses in the Broadway productions refuse to use any other brand because they like how small and lightweight our hidden wireless microphone SSM transmitter fits into their hair or wigs,” said Dave.

Conrad Sanchez: Theatre major Conrad Sanchez-Sikes (Attended) had big dreams of making it in Hollywood while learning the craft at ENMU. Little did this young man from Albuquerque know, his future career would take him not only to California, but to Chicago, New York, Paris and Milan as well.

After leaving ENMU, Conrad moved to the City of Angels to try acting. A fellow Los Angeles actor gave him advice that would forever change Conrad’s career path. The friend said, “Say ‘yes’ to anything!” So Conrad did.

He landed a job as a makeup artist for Lorimar Television’s series “Sisters.” His background in stage makeup gave him the ability to decipher the makeup for the TV show’s “extras.” From that first gig, he was hired to do makeup for more episodes, then was asked to do makeup for the actors’ personal head shots, then other photographers hired him for photo shoots.

“I never felt pulled away from my acting dream,” recalls Conrad.

“Instead, I was introduced to the world of makeup.” Conrad built his makeup kit by trading his training skills for products from a friend who worked for Chanel. Conrad continued to expand his

Class Notes People You Know In 1952, six months after Robert Cooper (BA 53) transferred to ENMU, he joined the Air Force. He was assigned to temporary duty in order to complete his degree, and then finished his tour of duty in Alaska. He has been retired for 23 years, and he and his wife, Charlene, have traveled all over the world.
