There’s no way Brenon and Scott Odell could have known what they were in for when they opened Market Street Blade and Barrel on Jan. 1, 2020.

The father-and-son endeavor was set to transform a restaurant that’d been around under different ownership for 20 years. They were going to take loyal customers, a great location and infuse it with their industry experience and transform it into Redding’s go-to spot.

“We set out to serve the upper echelon of food and beverages that Redding has to offer along with unprecedented customer service,” the Odells say.

“We cut our New York and ribeye steaks in house,” says Scott Odell, who adds they also sell their jalapeno and bacon ranch dressing at local grocery stores. “Our whiskey bar serves almost 300 different whiskeys as well as other handcrafted libations that include vodka, gin, rum and tequila.”•

IN THE LOOP expanding our trails to get around on foot, bike, skates or scooter

The new Diestelhorst to Downtowntrail/bikeway, which is almost complete, links downtown neighborhoods and businesses to the city’s popular Sacramento River Trail, making it easier – and safer – to get from one place to the other on foot, bike, skates or scooter.

Diestelhorst to Downtown ties into a much bigger vision: The Downtown Connector Loop Trail. “With this loop, we are connecting the three most walkable districts: downtown, Turtle Bay and Hilltop (Drive),” says Anne Thomas, executive director of Shasta Living Streets, a nonprofit organization promoting bikeways and trails to support healthy communities.

The loop is a mix of existing trails and streets. It encompasses the Cascade Theatre, California Street Labs, Caldwell Park, Redding Aquatic Center, Jump River Playground, Sundial Bridge, Turtle Bay Exploration Park, Redding Civic Auditorium and other key places in Redding’s core. Downtown locations designated as part of the Redding Cultural District are connected by the loop.

Redding has fabulous trails, and before, most people reached them by car, Thomas notes. “The Loop Trail allows people to get around without a car,” Thomas says.

And that makes for a healthier, more well-connected community. “When you make it easier, safer, comfortable, people come out.”

From the Sacramento River Trail at Diestelhorst Bridge, the new connection offers two options for crossing busy Court Street: A crosswalk with flashing lights plus an island median or the new trail next to the Sacramento River that will go under the Diestelhorst and Court Street bridges and then up to Riverside Drive.

Part of Riverside Drive has been transformed to a bikeway/walkway and closed to vehicles. From Center Street to California Street is a bicycle track (lanes for both directions) along one side of the street separated from vehicles.

Thomas says this and other improvements underway will be a plus for North State residents and boost tourism.

arts & culture The North State is home to a diverse and broad spectrum of talent. And whether it’s live music, dance, theater and beyond, Redding and its surrounding communities have shown they are capable of producing events that elevate the community.

From first-rate venues to teachers raising the next generation of artists, musicians, actors and dancers, the North State has a bigtime feel with a small-town flair.

The City of Redding is home to one of 14 California Cultural Districts. Originating with the adoption of Assembly Bill 189 in 2015, the California Cultural Districts program aims to leverage the state’s artistic and cultural assets.

The California Arts Council was tasked with developing and implementing guidelines that helped establish the designation, and in 2017, the first group of districts was created – Redding Cultural District among them.

The districts highlight the cultural legacy of the state’s most valuable resource – its diversity. Each helps grow and sustain authentic arts and culture opportunities, increase the visibility of local artists and promote socioeconomic and ethnic diversity through culture and creative expression.

In its program announcement, the California Arts Council stated, “Each community’s personal and generational commitment to these assets speaks of a state deeply invested in the places and people that celebrate local traditions and creativity. Our goal with the pilot launch of this new program was to support a group of districts that met high but broad standards of coherence, vision and purpose.”

For Redding, the decision to enter the competition for designation was a reflection of the community’s long-term commitment to revitalization of the city. Much of the groundwork was prepared during the development of the Downtown Specific Plan, which was being revised and adopted in 2017. Key cultural and civic organizations such as the Shasta Historical Society, Turtle Bay Exploration Park, VIVA Downtown, City of Redding, Shasta County Arts Council, The McConnell Foundation and Redding Visitors’ Bureau came together to develop a competitive strategy which in the end won Redding the Cultural District

Designation. The friendly to arts, culture and history concepts as well as live/work and the greening downtown were some of the key approaches proposed – exactly the approaches the designations were meant to foster. The district strives to help draw nighttime activity, farmers markets, concerts, events, arts training and enterprise to the downtown core. These activities and development of live/work downtown all encourage a walkable, bikeable environment. The development continues, and affordable housing and trail connections are in the process of being added to the fabric of downtown.

Where is Redding Cultural District located? The largest of the 14 districts, it stretches across the heart of downtown to Tiger Field at its southernmost tip, encompassing the Civic Center and Rodeo Grounds, Turtle Bay Exploration Park, Arboretum and Botanical Gardens, the Sacramento River Trail, Caldwell and Lake Redding Parks on the northern edge. Those areas include sites of cultural and historical significance to the Indigenous community, Asian and African American communities, as well as other past and present community groups.

What are the attractions of the district? Redding is fortunate to be able to offer a little bit of everything, from fine dining to shopping, history, art and entertainment and even a smattering of the outdoors. With Redding’s beautiful weather, visitors can walk, bike or borrow a scooter and explore the district. Improvements to the biking infrastructure will make car alternatives more accessible to many. Redding Cultural District is also

quite affordable, including free admission to some of the art exhibitions or free musical performances – there are also quite a lot of public art pieces to enjoy while enjoying a stroll, as more than 70 art installations await discovery throughout the area. Since the designation, more art pieces found home within the district boundaries. Home to some of Redding’s key performance venues, including the Civic Auditorium, Riverfront Playhouse, Cascade Theatre, Riverfront Park Amphitheater and Old City Hall, the district’s entertainment calendar is full yearround. Many local bars and restaurants host live music acts of national and international renown. Boutique stores offer products made by local artists and craftsmen as well as gourmet treats and local delicacies.

Visitors can also comfortably enjoy a downtown experience while staying at one of the many hotels located within the district – from the luxurious four-star Sheraton Hotel to revitalized old-school motel gems, boutique hotels or bespoke guest houses. FLIGHT PLAN For nearly 74 years, the Redding Municipal Airport has connected the North State with the world – and there are bigger things still to come.

RDD (Redding’s airport code) has served far Northern California since 1947, after the government transferred the airport to the City of Redding following World War II. In the ensuing year, the airport staff worked to improve and enhance travel opportunities for North State residents.
