Let’s start with the short and sweet – an hour in Redding. The first stop is, naturally, the world-famous Sundial Bridge at Turtle Bay. Walk across the Santiago Calatrava-designed span and marvel at the beauty in the heart of Redding.

Mill about the plaza underneath the giant sundial (and yes, it does double as a sundial on the summer solstice), and perhaps dip your toes in the cool Sacramento River. Take a stroll over to Mosaic for an amazing meal at a restaurant that only tastes like it belongs in the big city.

And with only minutes to spare, head over to The Bluffs off Hilltop Drive for one last look and take in Mother Nature’s beauty with the river, the city and the mountains off to the west. It’s truly breathtaking.

01 HOUR

OK, now it gets a little tougher – one whole day.

We’d start the morning at any number of fantastic breakfast places – from Deja Vu to Corbett’s to From the Hearth – and kick it into gear heading west to one of the crown jewels of the North State, Whiskeytown National Recreation Area.

Nothing rivals the peace and tranquility of kayaking across Whiskeytown, alone with your thoughts amid nature’s splendor. After a morning on the water, head back toward Redding and stop in Old Shasta to step back in history and learn what the North State was like during the Gold Rush days.

And before returning from yesteryear, stop in the early 20th Century with a stop at Shasta Dam. The cornerstone of the Central Valley Project, built in the late 1930s/early 1940s, is as inspiring for visitors as it is for locals. Walk across the dam and gaze at the Three Shastas (dam, lake and mountain), and if it’s open, the tour is both informative and pretty dang cool.

As the afternoon starts slipping away, it’s time to fuel back up for a fun night. First stop would most likely be Jack’s Grill, a Redding institution since 1938. The menu hasn’t changed much over time, and why would it, when it’s pretty close to perfect? Other great places to dine include (but aren’t limited to) Janya’s Thai, Market Street Blade and Barrel, Woody’s Brewing Co. or View 202.

Then it’s time to head to the indescribable Cascade Theatre to take in a world-class performance in an art deco venue. When you’re done being dazzled by both the Cascade’s beauty and the performance it draws, head to a revitalized downtown for a nightcap at Vintage Public House or the Post Office Saloon.

day one

If you’ve got a full weekend in the North State, that means staying local and venturing out to see why those of us who live here do so.

Head east on your first morning with sights set on Burney Falls. Once called the 8th Wonder of the World, the majestic spring-fed falls are awe-inspiring no matter the season. After spending time walking the trails around Burney Falls, make a short stop at the bridge spanning Lake Britton – the one featuring the famous train scene in the 1980s classic “Stand By Me.” A weekend trip to the North State should include Lassen Volcanic Park, so head south from Burney Falls to the living geological wonder. At Lassen, you can wander around Manzanita Lake – even kayak if you’d like – or wander through the stinky fumaroles of Bumpass Hell, the park’s hydrothermal area that features bubbling sulfur mud pits.

If you’re into conquering mountains, you can even summit Lassen Peak. After the Burney-to-Lassen loop, return to Redding for a nice meal, a relaxing stay at the fivestar Sheraton at Turtle Bay and prepare for the next day’s journey.

The second day’s adventure requires a trip north toward Mt. Shasta, the 14,000-foot beacon that dominates the North State skyline. Head up Interstate 5 past Lake Shasta, which is an outdoor lover’s paradise, especially during the summer months.

Before getting to Mount Shasta, Castle Crags State Park rises to the west of the freeway and is a great place to explore the park’s many trails, from beginner-level to the challenging trek that takes the intrepid to the top of the granite spires.

After Castle Crags, a stop in Dunsmuir is a possibility, with great restaurants including the world-famous YAKS. Then head to Hedge Creek Falls and the sublime Mossbrae Falls.

From Dunsmuir, Mount Shasta offers a quaint downtown with access to the mountain above.

Golf lovers would be wise to stop at the Mount Shasta resort for a challenging 18 holes, while nature lovers could head to Lake Siskiyou or up to Castle and Heart lakes for unparalleled views of Mt. Shasta.

Beyond Mount Shasta are towns like Yreka, Etna and Fort Jones, where history comes alive and each has its prized establishments, including the Denny Bar and Grill in Etna.

But bottom line, there are simply more things to do in the North State than you can possibly fit into a weekend. So, come back and keep exploring.

As stewards of the IOOF Hall—the oldest brick structure in downtown Redding—The McConnell Foundation’s first step was to give the building’s façade some “TLC.” Inspired by examples of other buildings of the historical era, the McConnell team used paint and structural foam to make façade improvements.

There are more than 80 miles of paved and dirt trails within the city, and while the biking trails in and around Redding draw raves, as well as regional and national attention, the walking trails, paths and byways are equally as impressive.

Though far too many to dive into here, the city of Redding has a complex, detailed look at the Redding area trails that offers the curious a state-of-the-art GIS map that’s both searchable and user friendly.

You can’t talk about Redding’s trail system without starting at the SACRAMENTO RIVER TRAIL. HILLTOP DRIVE TRAILHEAD: Starting from the Hilltop Drive trailhead, you could walk all the way to Shasta Dam if you’ve got that much energy. However, the most widely used trail in Redding runs in and around Turtle Bay Exploration Park, across the Sundial Bridge and west toward the Diestelhorst Bridge and farther to the ribbon bridge near Keswick Dam. The dog-friendly paths (just make sure Fido is on a leash) are perfect for morning exercise or an evening stroll after the sometimes searing Redding heat starts to fade into night.

COURT STREET (BENTON DRIVE) TRAILHEAD: The out-andback loop west of the Diestelhorst, the railroad trestle and Court Street is a challenging 6.1-mile loop with enough hills to get the blood pumping and enough flat spots to be able to enjoy one of Redding’s natural treasures - the Sacramento River.

And as beautiful as the Sundial Bridge is, don’t overlook taking a sunset selfie on the Diestelhorst.

DOG FRIENDLY/LEASH FREE: Two places that are dog-friendly and leash-free are Turtle Bay East off Bechelli Lane and the Nor Pom area in back of the old Raley’s location on Hartnell Avenue. Nor Pom recently opened and continues to delight as wide, meandering paths wind along the Sacramento River with a salmon spawning channel and pedestrian bridge just south of the Cypress Avenue bridge.

CLEAR CREEK RECREATION AREA: In southern Redding, a maze of trails off Clear Creek Road offers walkers and hikers the feeling of being far from the city within a few minute’s drive. At certain times during the year, walkers also can see salmon returning to Clear Creek to spawn. From strolls along the creek to soaring vistas of the westside, the Clear Creek area isn’t to be missed.

CLOVER CREEK PRESERVE: In east Redding, the Clover Creek Preserve is a true gem off Shasta View Drive. A bird-watcher’s paradise, the dog-friendly 1.4-mile trail is flat and features a seasonal lake and creek flowing through it.

Farther north is the Lema Ranch trail system and the Churn Creek Greenway.

LEMA RANCH: The Lema Ranch trails are four miles of wandering paths on 200 acres. The paved trails showcase five ponds built by the Lema family in the 1950s. The Lema Ranch trails are pedestrian only as both dogs and bikes aren’t allowed.

CHURN CREEK GREENWAY: Just to the northwest of the Lema Ranch and McConnell Foundation property is the Churn Creek Greenway, an expanse that has both dirt and gravel surfaces. Leashed dogs are allowed on the Churn Creek Trails.

But wherever you decide to get out, remember to pick up after your pet, smile and wave at your neighbors on the trail, and soak in all the amazing beauty of the North State.

Since moving to the North State in 2000, he’s been an involved community member as a journalist with the newspaper, as a teacher at Central Valley High School, as a youth sports coach and football coach at Shasta High School.
