RECREATION AREA IS NOW OPEN!

Long Swamp Creek Recreation Area is located two miles south of Ball Ground, GA and adjacent to the McGraw-Ford Wildlife Management Area. The property rests northwest of the confluence of Long Swamp Creek and the Etowah River. The property is accessed by GA Highway 372. The development of this project will provide for the critical protection and conservation of sensitive land that borders two bodies of water, wildlife management in the area, and outdoor recreation opportunities for Cherokee County residents and visitors. The land is rich with Native American history and culture, especially the Cherokee Nation. Specifically, it is believed that the Battle of Taliwa actually took place on this land and adjacent properties. The battle, thought

CHEROKEE RECREATION & PARKS

Cherokee Recreation & Parks is a nationally accredited agency through the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA). A few things that set our agency apart and to receive this national accreditation:

✔ Implementing a new Standard Operations Procedures Manual encompassing over 50 new or revised policies and procedures.

✔ Developing a Park Maintenance Manual to standardize maintenance processes and schedules across all 23 parks and facilities.

✔ Adopting a new strategic plan to guide program and facility development.

✔ Adopting a Recycle Plan to improve recycling efforts and reduce waste across all facilities

✔ Providing extensive staff training in critical areas such as de-escalation tactics, program development and evaluation, social media utilization, and risk reduction in programs and facilities. Our agency successfully met 149 out of 154 standards, securing its place as one of 213 accredited agencies in the United States. This achievement demonstrates Cherokee Recreation & Parks’ ongoing commitment to excellence for their community and sets a strong foundation for its next re-accreditation in 2026.

Today’s youth sports climate overflows with programming choices, making it challenging for organizations to stand out among the crowd and difficult for parents to gauge which ones can deliver high-quality experiences for young athletes. The Better Sports for Kids Quality Program Provider designation recognizes those organizations that have met an equally high standard when it comes to administering youth sports programming. Earning the designation means that you have taken the steps to ensure a safe, quality playing environment for children. The Better Sports for Kids Quality Program Provider designation has been developed around the National Standards for Youth Sports to recognize and promote youth sports organizations that prioritize quality. If an organization meets the benchmark requirements of the designation, parents can be assured that specific safety and quality measures have been implemented.

We seek a future where the full power of parks and recreation is widely recognized for creating a better life for everyone by building strong, healthy, and resilient communities. We advance this vision by investing in and championing the profession as a catalyst of positive change for equity, climate readiness, and overall well-being.

Currently, 10 fulltime employees at Cherokee Recreation & Parks are Certified Parks & Recreation Professionals! A Certified Park and Recreation Professional (CPRP) certification is the national standard for all parks and recreation professionals who want to be at the forefront of their profession. Attaining the CPRP designation shows that you have met education and experience qualifications and illustrates your commitment to the profession and your knowledge and understanding of key concepts within parks and recreation. We are proud to have so many employees who want to continue their education to make Cherokee Recreation & Parks the best we can be.

CHEROKEE RECREATION & PARKS CHAMPIONS HEALTH IN EVERY SEASON

in motion

Each July, communities across the country celebrate National Parks and Recreation Month, recognizing the powerful role recreation plays in enriching lives. This year’s national theme, Health and Wellness, is more than just a message—it’s a mission Cherokee Recreation & Parks lives out every day through its wide range of programs and facilities that serve residents of all ages and abilities.

At the heart of this mission is the department’s commitment to creating accessible, inclusive, and engaging wellness opportunities. Whether you’re a fitness enthusiast, a parent looking for family-friendly fun, or someone starting their wellness journey, there’s a place for you in Cherokee County’s parks and recreation programs.

FINDING BALANCE: YOGA AT THE BUZZ

At the L. B. “Buzz” Ahrens, Jr. Recreation Center, mornings start with deep breaths and gentle movement. The center’s yoga classes provide a peaceful space to build flexibility, improve balance, and calm the mind. Open to all skill levels, these sessions foster both physical and mental health—two vital pillars of wellness.

MAKING WAVES WITH WATER AEROBICS

A few miles away, the Cherokee County Aquatic Center is making wellness fun and refreshing. The center offers year-round water aerobics and water walking classes, ideal for those seeking low-impact fitness that’s easy on the joints but challenging enough to boost strength and cardiovascular health.

During the summer, water walking takes places in the Oasis Lazy River. During the colder months, classes take place in the indoor pools, creating a unique, supportive environment for participants of all levels.

INCLUSIVE FITNESS FOR EVERY BODY

Cherokee Recreation & Parks also leads the way in Therapeutic and Adaptive Recreation, offering specialized programs that support physical activity and social engagement for individuals with special needs. Events like Tropical Oasis Nights at the Aquatic Center provide a safe, fun, and judgment-free space where everyone belongs.

The department’s adaptive programs are a growing part of its commitment to wellness that includes all members of the community.

BEYOND THE GYM: MOVEMENT FOR LIFE

Beyond traditional fitness classes, the department offers a variety of ways to get moving—LaBlast, mobility training, ballroom dancing, QiGong, clogging, and pickelball for active older adults. With options available at both The Buzz and The WREC, it’s easy to find a class that fits your interest and schedule.

And for those who prefer fresh air and scenic views, Cherokee County’s parks and trails offer year-round opportunities to connect with nature and recharge.

WELLNESS STARTS HERE

Health and wellness aren’t trends—they’re a way of life. Through innovative programs, inclusive design, and community-focused events, Cherokee Recreation & Parks is showing residents that wellness is accessible, enjoyable, and part of everyday life.

As the national spotlight shines on the role parks and recreation play in public health this month, Cherokee County stands as a shining example of what it means to support wellness at the local level.
