CHARLET RINGWALD

Charlet

Ringwald was born in Kingfisher, Oklahoma, but she moved to Enid in 1987 when she was still a kid. She went to McKinley Elementary School, Waller Middle School, and Enid High School, and she graduated from Oklahoma State University in 2009 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre Performance. Charlet met her husband, Chad, at OSU in 2005, and they later got married in 2017 upon their return from teaching in Korea. Together, they have a dog, Isabelle, and two cats, Pepper and Bubsy. Charlet and her family relocated to Enid because her dad desired for them to have more opportunities – they came from a small farm/homestead just outside of Kingfisher. And Charlet definitely took advantage of those opportunities. As a teen, she got her start at Gaslight Theatre, where she acted, directed, and

stage managed. She won a Kennedy Center Award for Stage Management for her work in Oklahoma State University’s 2009 production of “Lonely Planet”. She also served as the Gaslight Board President during the peak of COVID-19, and she was a critical part of keeping the doors open. For her work during those chaotic times, she was awarded OCTA’s Volunteer of the Year Award in 2023. Charlet continues to volunteer for Main Street Enid, and her husband, Chad, states, “She’s a tireless advocate for the arts and sciences in her community.” In addition to volunteering and being a passionate advocate, Charlet also serves as the Executive Director of Leonardo’s Children’s Museum, and she’s held that position since December of 2023. She was a “Leo’s kid” back when Leonardos first opened, and the skills she learned from there set her on the path to becoming who she is today. Professionally, she’s also served as the Adoption Coordinator for Enid Animal Welfare and the Assistant Director for Main Street Enid. However, Charlet’s reach and impact doesn’t stop there! She is also a member of Enid Noon AMBUCS, a grad-

uate of Enid LGE Class XXXII, on the Tri-State Music Festival Board, a soon-to-be-graduate of Oklahoma Leadership Arts Class XIII, on the Enid Arts Council Board, and still continues to volunteer with Gaslight Theatre and Main Street Enid! Charlet has undoubtedly helped not only members of the community but the community as a whole itself. Chad states, “Charlet always does all that she can to improve and give back to the communities that gave her so much. She grew up in a family of modest means as a person of color and proud daughter of an immigrant, being half-Filipina. She wants to do all she can to show young people of all walks of life that they can accomplish their dreams, and that helping hands are there, as long as they have the drive and inspiration to reach for them.” Whether she’s volunteering, working, or participating in organizations and clubs right here in the community, what remains consistent is her kindness, philanthropic ways, drive, and intentionality, and that intentionality in her actions and choices makes her a fierce Local Legend.

BLAK E REESE

This month’s note is bittersweet! As my time with Enid Monthly comes to a close, I can’t help but feel all the mushy emotions of gratitude, sadness, excitement, and everything else in between… I wanted to briefly take a moment just to express my appreciation for every individual I’ve met personally and for everyone who’s met me through these little monthly letters. Thank you for welcoming me into the community, thank you for making me feel at home, and, most importantly, thank you for continuing to read and support this publication! An ongoing trend and theme here in Enid is supporting local and giving back, and by simply picking up the magazines, you guys are supporting in more than one way, both the publication and the local businesses within. You may see me pop back in on stories from time to time, but I just wanted to thank you all for everything.

Now! Enough of that. This month’s cover story highlights our annual Best of Enid, and this year’s competition was tough! Many categories quite literally came down to the last minute with categories flipping back and forth daily, and for some, hourly! That drive and motivation to support your favorites just speaks to the community within Enid and having nights where we can sing each other’s praises and uplift one another are so important. Thank you to everyone who voted and thank you to all of the businesses for making Enid a great place to live, shop, eat, and play! I may be “signing off” for now, but I will always hold space for Enid and those within. Thank you!

BEST of Enid Enid d 2025

This year’s annual Best of Enid 2025 has come to a close, and it was a night to remember! With prizes, raffles, great food, amazing people, and competitive spirits, the night was full of fun and excitement!

The Best of Enid 2025 was a sold-out event, and the house was packed! With more sponsorships than ever before, it’s safe to say everyone was hungry for the win this year, and that hunger reflected in the votes! This year’s BOE event significantly passed last year’s voting count, and the categories were closer than they’ve ever been. Up until the last day and last hour, the winners were flipping back and forth as everyone vied for that top spot, and the results this year may have shocked a few. With some categories flipping from the usual, numerously awarded winners to newly established businesses and individuals – the competition was strong this year.

In addition to the heat of voting, the community support was vast and evident! With a sold-out event and a plethora of sponsorships, the energy in the room was vibrant!

A special thanks to Gold Sponsors, Ediger’s Diamonds, Unleashed Pet Grooming, Park Avenue Thrift, American Cannabis, Hayley Hudson with Integris Health, Vargas

Roofing, Ramco Undercar Specialist, and Choice Hospice, and to Silver Sponsors, Enid C-Star, Ladusau Evans Funeral Home & Crematory, Tinker Federal Credit Union, and Renah Gibson with St. Mary’s. There were also 12 table sponsors and numerous individual ticket sales as well; the best of the best truly showed up and showed out. For events like this, it takes a village, or, in this case, a community! Local MC, Kegan Tuohy, kicked the night off with fun high spirits, and he led the evening as he navigated his way through each of the winners. Photographer Kaci Carpenter was also present again, and DJ Robert Gober gave the evening it’s own soundtrack.

The fun of an event like the Best of Enid is the diverse crowd it brings in. People who may not have known each other otherwise

shared tables, celebrated one another’s victories, and uplifted everyone involved in the process. And with the premise of the event being a competition, it’s refreshing to see people come together as they did. However, community is one thing Enid never lacks in, so it’s no surprise that the event had that same familiarity and feeling of community.

The doors to BOE25 opened at 6:00pm, and the crowd came in shortly after. For dinner, lasagna and chicken alfredo were served as the main course, along with potatoes, broccoli breadsticks, and a salad. Desert was also served, and a slice of cheesecake, of any kind, always hits the spot. In addition to the amazing food, there was also a cash bar, which was run by Stride Bank Center, and a nice beverage was the cherry on top to the nights courses.

The show began shortly after the doors opened and dinner was served, and Publisher of Enid Monthly, Robert Faulk, introduced the evening. Kegan took the stage again briefly after and kicked off the evening with the first award. As the awards went out and the winners were announced, the spirits within the room

never wavered – everyone was truly happy for one another. With phenomenal raffles spread throughout the evening, businesses weren’t the only thing winning, and trophies weren’t the only prizes. With prizes like a pearl bracelet and handbag, courtesy of Ediger’s Diamonds, and a decanter set with a $150 gift card to Rock Island Liquor & Wine, courtesy of Rock Island Liquor & Wine, some of the raffles winners felt like bigger winners than those who actually won. The prizes also included ticket vouchers to a showing at Stride Bank Center from Stride Bank Center, a certificate for a deluxe facial from Enchanted Beauty Wellness Spa, and a Blackstone Grill donated by Ace Hardware.

The night moved along swiftly, and the MC never missed with a joke, whether he was referring to the winner of a category with some lighthearted fun or touching on the current events of Enid, his humor lit up the room. If the night were to be given a theme, it would’ve been gratitude. Every winner who approached the stage to receive their award was not only proud and overjoyed but also thankful and appreciative. Being deemed the best of the best by your own community is no small feat, and the winners from the Best of Enid 2025 were very aware of that. Squire & Cindy’s Kitchen took home the award for Best BBQ, and they were up against tough competition as they competed against Swadley’s Bar-B-Q and Blaze’s BBQ, in addition to the other nominees. When their name was announced, you could feel the joy radiating off of them as they approached the stage, and their appreciation was palpable. Cindy of Squire & Cindy’s Kitchen sates, “Thank you Enid for supporting our dream and allowing us to be part of your events and special moments. God has blessed us immeasurably.”

Allie Nails at D Pro Lash was also a pleasantly surprised winner of the evening. In her short year as a nail technician, she not only competed against some of the best, she also competed against entire salons, with DNT Nails & Spa and Enchanted Beauty Wellness Spa being the other finalists in the category. In her acceptance speech, she made sure to express her gratitude, especially in highlight of her relatively new found profession.

One of the speeches that continues to echo that theme of gratitude was given by Best of Enid 2025 winner for Best Roofer, Vargas Roofing. As they accepted their award, they highlighted the other finalists in the category and shared the spotlight expressing their thankfulness. Wess & Jolene Gray Portraits took home Best Photographer at the event, and they echoed the sentiments of Vargas Roofing as they shared the spotlight with the other finalists within their category and shared their journey of how they got where they are today.

Boho Teepee took home the win for Best Boutique, and owner, Tani, stated, “What an honor to win in this category and against

such steep competition! Thank you so much to everyone who voted for us. We are so blessed to be a part of the Enid community.”

The Best of Enid being a competition drives the fun – it motivates the community and businesses alike. But regardless of the outcome, there are no losers. Yes, someone will take home a trophy and be deemed the “Best of the Best.” However, simply being nominated itself is the biggest reward. Being seen and recognized by not just your peers but your customers and friends is a feeling of validation that everyone needs once in a while, especially in trying times where things can get a little hectic. After all, who doesn’t love a pat on the back followed up by “We see you, and you’re doing great,” and that’s the entire premise of the Best of Enid – recognition.

Beyond the gratitude, recognition, validation, and competition, the Best of Enid is also a night to have fun, and that was a big part of the Best of Enid 2025. As the line to the bar rarely ceased to exist, members of the community had dinner, networked, got

a couple of drinks, and celebrated. Stela Jantzen from Gold Sponsor Park Avenue Thrift stated, “This is always such a fun event to attend! The community coming together to celebrate each other and cheer each other on. Thank you Enid Monthly for having this wonderful event.” Best Hair Salon winner Bloom Hair Studio shared Stela’s sentiments. Shianne Royal with Bloom continued with, “We look forward to the Enid Monthly’s Best of Enid event every year. Great food, good vibes, and a night out is always a good time.”

To echo those same sentiments, the Best of Enid would not be a thing nor exist if it weren’t for the businesses and individuals that compose Enid. Without the community and the places that make Enid a fun place to work, play, and eat, there wouldn’t be anything to recognize or anyone to compete for you or with you. Therefore, the Best of Enid is you, and it’s your neighbor, and it’s your competitor, and it’s the stranger you pass at the grocery store. Enid is a collection of businesses, people, and organizations who all share a similar mission and love – maintaining and bettering Enid while loving it in the process.

A special thanks to everyone who made the night possible. Readers for keeping up with all things Enid Monthly, voters who fought hard for their favorites to win, businesses who gave the voters something to fight for, and to everyone and thing who made the event itself possible, including sponsors, ticket purchases, Stride Bank Center, and the businesses who donated prizes. Until next year!

The Best of Enid 2025 has come to a conclusion, and we have our winners! A special thank you to the community for not only nominating your favorites but for also voting so vigorously. The competition this year was closer than ever before! Whether you were a finalist or a nominee, being nominated and thought of is still a big deal, so congratulations to everyone involved. And another special thank you to the businesses and organizations, nominated or not, that make Enid what it is! Until next year!

Never Flinch

Author: Stephen King | Rating: STARSTARSTARSTARStar Reviewed

This month I decided to tackle a fear of mine…I read a Stephen King book. Now, I have technically read one of his before, 11/22/63, but that is more along the lines of time travel/alternative history. I’ve always been too scared to read one of his actual horror mysteries. So I thought, there’s no better time than summer – there are 14 hours of daylight, it’s not the cold, dark winter, I can do this. I chose King’s newest release, Never Flinch, and you know what? It wasn’t that bad at all. Dare I say, I actually really enjoyed it.

The plot has a few different storylines, the main two involving a serial killer, Trig, and a controversial speaker, Kate, with a crazed stalker. For Trig, he has set out to kill thirteen innocent people to avenge the death of an innocent man in prison. Trig has gone to AA meetings since getting sober, but he quickly finds that murder has the same intoxicating

power he’s missed so much. With Kate, she is a bold feminist on a multi-state speaking tour, but one of her haters is intent on taking her down and silencing her for good. As these cases grow more and more intense, King brings in reader-favorite Holly Gibney to help figure out who Trig really is and to act as a bodyguard for Kate as her situation becomes more dangerous.

Now, if you’re an avid King reader, I don’t know how this book compares to the others for you. But for me, a first timer, I thought it was great. I see the appeal of King – super smooth writing that reads quickly and keeps you hooked until the end. And the way that he intertwined all of the storylines and brought them together at the end, it was masterful. I never felt confused by all of the moving parts, and I never felt scared out of my bones either. Now, I’m not about to jump into The Shining or the Pet Sematary next, I’m not that bold, but I am excited to dispel my no-King rule and read more of his [mild] works.

Young Adult Book Review

The Reappearance of Rachel Price

I can’t say author Holly Jackson intimidates me the same as Stephen King, but continuing along a similar theme, Jackson is another popular mystery writer that I had never read before. She’s wellknown for her young adult books, and I wanted to pick one up before she releases her adult debut this July. I chose her latest YA book, The Reappearance of Rachel Price, which came out April 2024.

The story begins with a documentary crew filming Annabel Price about the disappearance of her mother 16 years ago. Bel was only two years old when her mother’s car was run off the road, Rachel was taken, and Bel was left in the backseat. The case was never solved, and Rachel has been presumed dead. It is a wild surprise then when a woman claiming to be Rachel appears back at the house one day. Bel isn’t too certain though; the woman has multiple inaccuracies in her story, and Bel thinks she might only be pretending so that she can get a hefty payday from the film crew. Things are further complicated when Bel’s dad, Charlie, disappears in the middle of the night. Bel is certain the woman is behind that too, so, along with Ash, the camera assistant, Bel sets out to learn the truth. Why did her mother disappear, and if

it’s really her who has come back, how in the world did she reappear?

Now, I will say that the book’s final quarter saved this one for me. I thought the story’s climax was fast-paced with fantastic twists. Outside of that though, I really disliked the writing style of Jackson. It was too fragmented and disjointed, and she literally mentioned the knot in Bel’s gut 51 times. Add to that the extensive use of curse words, and it just struck me as lazy writing. It was not smooth or beautiful, and I found it difficult to read. Jackson does have admittedly really creative plots, but I think she needs to clean up the writing a bit, make it stronger, if she wants to make that jump from YA to adult this July and attract new readers.

Teen SCENE Thailand

Hey, Ya’ll, and welcome back to "Teen Scene" in  Enid Monthly. This past month I took an AWESOME trip to Thailand with my dad and uncle, and I wanted to share our awesome adventure with you all. Let’s talk about it!!!!

Though the flights were terrible, don’t be discouraged—the trip itself was amazing. After over 35 hours of traveling, we arrived early in the morning at our hotel in Bangkok, where we stayed for five nights. After a short nap, my uncle arrived, and we headed out to explore downtown. We walked for hours, visited a park and a huge mall, and ate lunch at a small hidden market—Uncle T even tried chicken feet! I was so exhausted that I slept the rest of the day while T and my dad went to the pool. The next morning, we took a wild ride in a Tuk-Tuk, one of Bangkok’s iconic forms of transportation. We visited the famous Chatuchak weekend market, one of the largest in the world. We spent about five hours shopping, eating, and wandering before heading back to the hotel. Sunday was our first guided excursion, where we explored the floating markets and train markets. The train market had

vendors set up right on the tracks, and the floating market was along narrow canals with shop owners in canoes. Later that night, we went on a dinner cruise that was highly recommended, and it didn’t disappoint. The food, views, and entertainment were all amazing. Day three was my favorite overall. Our guide, Oil, took us around the city using boats, canoes, trains, and Tuk Tuks. We visited the Grand Palace and several stunning temples. The architecture was absolutely breathtaking. Oil also brought us to a traditional Thai dance show that told the story of the Demon-Monsters vs. the Human-Monkeys. On our last day in Bangkok, we visited the Erawan Waterfalls and the Bridge over the River Kwai, a World War II memorial built by Japanese POWs. After the bridge, we hiked to level 7 of the waterfalls—it was a tough climb but totally worth it for the view.

We spent our final two nights in Phuket. The first day was spent island-hopping by boat and exploring caves and beaches, although it rained the whole time. It would’ve been perfect without the rain, but it was still an unforgettable experience. Our last day was at the Phuket Elephant Sanctuary, the first ethical elephant sanctuary in the region. We learned how elephants rehabilitate after years of work, fed them snacks, and spent time observing them in a peaceful jungle setting. Although we couldn’t touch them, we learned why it’s healthier that way. After returning to the hotel, my dad and I ended the trip with a peaceful walk on the beach.

Thank you for reading this month's article. I hope you enjoyed it!! If you have any questions, comments, or ideas for upcoming articles, please feel free to email me at  tweensceneenid@gmail.com. I have been enjoying my summer, so I hope you are too!! See you next month!!

Aging Matters

Five Great Chair Exercises for Seniors: Stay Active and Healthy with Ease

As we age, maintaining physical fitness becomes increasingly important for our overall well-being. However, for many seniors, high-impact workouts may not be feasible or comfortable.

That’s where chair exercises come to the rescue! These gentle yet effective routines allow older adults to stay active, improve flexibility, and build strength, all while remaining seated in the comfort of their chairs. Whether you’re looking to increase mobility, prevent falls, or simply enhance your daily quality of life, these exercises can be a fantastic addition to your fitness routine.

1. Seated Leg Lifts

Seated leg lifts are a fantastic exercise to strengthen your leg muscles and improve circulation. To perform this exercise, sit with your back straight in a sturdy chair. Keep your feet flat on the floor. Lift one leg straight out in front of you. Hold for a few seconds. Lower your leg back to the starting position. Repeat with the other leg.

Gradually increase the number of repetitions as you get more comfortable with this exercise. Seated leg lifts are an excellent way to prevent muscle atrophy and maintain your lower-body strength.

2. Seated Marching

Seated marching is a low-impact exercise that improves cardiovascular health and keeps your leg muscles engaged. First, sit upright in your chair with your feet flat on the floor.

Lift your right knee towards your chest. Lower your right leg and repeat the same motion with your left leg. Continue this marching motion for 1-2 minutes.

Seated marching is a great way to get your heart rate up without putting strain on your joints. It also helps with balance and coordination.

3. Seated

Knee Extensions

Seated knee extensions target your quadriceps and help to improve knee stability. To perform it, sit in a chair with your back straight and feet flat on the floor.

Lift your right foot off the ground, extending your leg fully. Hold for a moment. Lower your right foot back to the floor. Repeat with your left leg.

Perform 10-15 repetitions for each leg. This exercise can help strengthen your leg muscles, particularly the quadriceps, which are vital for mobility and daily activities.

4. Seated Upper Body Twist

The seated upper body twist helps to maintain flexibility in your spine and improve your core strength. Here’s how to do it. Sit with your back straight in a chair with your feet flat on the floor.

Place your hands on your hips. Slowly twist your upper body to the right, looking over your right shoulder. Hold for a few seconds. Return to the center and then twist to the left.

Repeat this exercise 10-15 times on each side. The seated upper body twist is essential for maintaining spinal mobility and reducing the risk of back pain.

5. Seated Arm Raises

Seated arm raises are excellent for strengthening the shoulder and arm muscles. To do it, follow the steps given below.

Sit with your back straight and feet flat on the floor. Hold a light dumbbell or a household item (such as a can of soup) in each hand. With your palms facing your body, extend your arms straight out to the sides at shoulder level. Slowly lower your arms back to your sides.

Perform 10-15 repetitions. If you don’t have weights, you can perform the exercise without them. Stronger shoulders and arm muscles can make daily activities like reaching for objects on high shelves much easier.

It’s recommended to engage in these exercises at least 2-3 times a week to maintain and improve strength, flexibility, and balance. Consistency is key to experiencing full benefits.

Thanks to seniorfitness.org for these and more great exercise tips!

Enjoying the Long Summer Days Outdoors in Enid

As anyone in Enid knows, it can be a difficult balance trying to beat the heat while still enjoying some time outdoors during the Summer. Luckily for those of us in Enid, there are tons of options for parks and recreation in town. Our local parks are perfect for those days when you want to get out of the house but not spend a ton of money, and they provide an opportunity to slow down and enjoy the simple activities in life.

Below are a couple of ideas for family outings or date nights at local parks in Enid to mix up your summer routine!

Evening Picnic at Crosslin Park

My husband and I love grabbing take-out every now and then and heading to Crosslin Park for a date night picnic. Katy’s Pantry is right around the corner from Crosslin and offers a great selection of sandwiches on homemade bread and sweets — perfect for a picnic. I may be biased, but Crosslin Park is one of my favorites due to its mix of tennis courts, roughly 2-mile paved walking trail, and dog-park. Crosslin also offers multiple pavilions to stay out of the sun or open space under some trees to have a classic picnic with a blanket in the grass. I promise there is nothing better than slowing down to enjoy dinner while watching the sun slowly start to drop while the crickets start to chirp.

Grab a Coffee and Head to the Enid Trail

Morning Donuts at Champlin Park

Another one of my favorite parks to enjoy is the Enid Trail! The Enid Trail offers a fabulous paved area to ride bikes, go on a run, or just take a stroll. During the summer on a slow Saturday morning, I highly recommend grabbing an iced coffee from DaVincis or Coffee Inclination and making your way to one of the trailheads. Personally, I like starting at the Oakwood Trailhead and heading east to enjoy a small grove of trees that offers some much-needed shade. If you have kids, I recommend starting at the Cleveland trailhead and heading east where over a bridge lies an interactive musical sculpture for kids. And if you look closely while you’re on the bridge, your little ones might just spot some fish or turtles in the water underneath!

If you're in the mood for a sweet treat on a Saturday morning, nothing can beat grabbing some donuts from J’s Doughnuts down the street and heading to Champlin Park for either a short date or family outing. Last July, we got lucky one morning where the weather was oddly cool, and we decided to pick up some donuts (highly recommend trying a blueberry cake donut) and took them to Champlin. The pavilion is the perfect shaded spot to enjoy your grub before letting your kids run wild on the playground or taking a stroll through the Kisner Heights Historic District.

Regardless of what park you choose, I highly recommend carving out some time this month to grab your loved ones and enjoy stealing some slow summer mornings or evenings outdoors.

Safety First… Keeping Your Home Safe While You’re Away

Keeping your home safe while on vacation is paramount to ensuring a relaxing and worry-free trip. The last thing anyone wants is to return to an unwelcome surprise. With a little foresight and preparation, you can significantly reduce the risk of a break-in and enjoy your time away to the fullest.

One of the most effective deterrents is making your home appear occupied. Before you leave, arrange for a trusted friend or neighbor to collect mail and newspapers. An overflowing mailbox is a dead giveaway that no one is home. If you have a regular newspaper delivery, consider suspending it for the duration of your trip. Likewise, if you have flyers or packages frequently left at your door, ask someone to periodically clear them away.

Technology offers excellent solutions for home security. Smart lighting systems allow you to program lights to turn on and off at various times, mimicking normal household activity. You can even control them remotely from your phone, adjusting schedules as needed. Consider investing in smart plugs for lamps or radios, which can also be set on timers. Video doorbells and security cameras provide real-time monitoring and alerts, allowing you to see who is at your door or on your property, no matter where you are. Many systems also offer two-way audio, enabling you to communicate with visitors or deter potential intruders.

Don't neglect the basics. Ensure all windows and doors are securely locked, including those in the basement and on upper floors. If you have a sliding glass door, consider placing a dowel or security bar on the track to prevent it from being forced open. For added security, deadbolt locks are highly recommended. If you have a security system, make sure it's armed and functioning correctly. Inform your alarm company of your travel dates and provide an emergency contact person.

Avoid broadcasting your vacation plans on social media. While it's tempting to share your excitement, publicly announcing your absence is essentially an open invitation for burglars. Wait until you return home to post those stunning vacation photos. Similarly, avoid leaving notes on your door or in visible windows indicating you're away.

Cultivate a relationship with your neighbors. Let them know you'll be gone and ask them to keep an eye on your property. Offer to do the same for them when they travel. A watchful community is a strong defense. You might also consider stopping your regular lawn care or asking a neighbor to mow your lawn to avoid an unkempt appearance, which can signal an empty home.

By implementing these tips, you can significantly enhance your home security while you're enjoying your well-deserved vacation, providing you with invaluable peace of mind.
