JAN PURSELL Jan and Terry Pursell came to Enid because of his military service in the Air Force. Although they are Kansas kids, after he retired, they stayed in Enid, and Terry became a pilot for Delta Airlines. They raised two kids and have 4 grandchildren.

Her oldest granddaughter Savannah reflected on experiencing a life in Enid and spending time with the person she called her best friend, her Nana.

“When people said there was nothing to do in Enid, I always smiled because my Nana created a wonderful Enid for me.”

She said they’d meet for pancakes, and she’d take her for ice cream and swimming at Oakwood Country Club. Her favorite place to go was the Rock shop on Randolph.

“My Nana was always the strongest and most confident person I knew,” she said. “She loved playing golf and canasta with her friends but most of all she was present for her family.”

Then Jan became sick. Her life slowed down when she required oxygen to live.

“Jan became sick in 2015,” said Terry. “She was on oxygen for 9 years and then on the transplant list for a year and a half before she received her donor lung,” he said. “The strangest thing about having a transplant is you have to be healthy enough to sustain a new organ but sick enough to get it.”

Jan survived covid and years of isolation while dealing with her health. Savannah said it was heart-

breaking to see how her Nana’s life changed, but when they found a donor, it was like a miracle. But it hasn’t all been smooth sailing. Jan went through days of testing before the transplant to make sure she qualified then days of testing after she got her new lung. It has been 2 years.

and I became her wingman.”

Jan’s daughter Lori, who lives in Tulsa, witnessed firsthand how difficult a decision it was to undergo a lung transplant.

He said for a long time, breathing took every ounce of her energy and now seeing her laughing with friends and moving around freely, feels like a miracle. “

“It was both a medical and emotional decision that required incredible strength, bravery, and resilience,” Lori said. “Watching everything she endured gave me an appreciation of just how strong she truly is,” Lori said. “As overwhelmingly frightening as this was, my mom chose to have the transplant because she wanted more time with her family and a better quality of life.”

Lori also witnessed the unwavering love and support of her father. “My dad was her rock through it all,” she said. “He was her biggest advocate and cheerleader. No one could ask for a better partner.”

They’ve had two scary incidents since the transplant that required rides to the city in a helicopter.

“It’s been hard on Jan because she hates to go to the doctor,” Terry said. “But we signed up for this,

Her son Casey, who lives in Las Vegas, also agreed with his sister. “Her resilience throughout this journey has completely redefined what strength means to me, and my pride in her is beyond words.”

Casey said a lung transplant doesn’t just save a life; it restores joy in it.

Savannah mentioned the kindness of Enid and those who stepped up to help like Keith did, the neighbor across the street.

“My Nana taught me that strength isn’t about never facing hardship-it’s about choosing joy, kindness, and love when life changes everything,” she said. “When I think of Enid, I don’t think of a place-I think of my Nana.

Jan is a very private person, but with the support of family and the Integris transplant team, she lives today. They want her story to encourage everyone to be an organ donor and for those who need a transplant to pursue doing so.

Takes Flight Hear that buzzing? For those of us living in Enid, we are no stranger to the sound of planes. Whether we see T-6s flying in formation or hear the afterburner of the T-38, our community is well familiar with the sights and sounds of aviation. But how familiar are we with local aviation history and the ways modern aviation is shaping Oklahoma?

According to the Oklahoma Historical Society, powered flight came to Oklahoma on March 18, 1910, during a traveling show where two pilots flew near Capitol Hill High school in Oklahoma City. After this, various traveling shows including barnstormers, who would travel to rural areas and put on an old-school aviation

stunt show, woo-ed crowds and spread awareness of and interest in aviation.

Enid’s aviation history is also deeply intertwined with the state’s history. In 1911, Clyde Cessna visited an international aviation exhibit in Oklahoma City and was inspired to fly. Later that year, Cessna took flight up at the Great Salt Plains and would later go on to host his own, “exhibition flights at Enid, Cherokee, Pond Creek, Kremlin, and other Oklahoma towns,” (Oklahoma Historical Society). Cessna would later form his company in Wichita, KS, which would go on to be a household name in private aviation.

Whether it was pioneering barnstormers or aviation entrepreneur Clyde Cessna, Oklahoma’s earliest aviators laid the foundation for an industry that would expand rapidly throughout the mid20th century. World War I marked a turning point, with Fort Sill playing a significant role in pilot training and returning veterans bringing both flying experience and an entrepreneurial spirit back home. In the decades that followed, Oklahoma celebrated milestones such as the state’s first airport, the introduction of airmail service, and the arrival of commercial airlines like SAFEWAY and Transcontinental Air Transport. By the 1940s, the state’s aviation industry had evolved once again, shifting its focus toward aircraft manufacturing and military support with the establishment of Tinker Air Force Base.

The aviation industry has only continued to thrive. Today, according to the Oklahoma Department of Aerospace and Aeronautics, “the aerospace and defense industry is the secondlargest and fastest growing industry in Oklahoma,” which has grown to have, “over 206,000 jobs and a total of $44B in annual statewide economic activity.”

For folks in Enid, this growth has translated into a lot of unique opportunities to get involved in aviation whether as an aviation enthusiast or someone looking to take on a unique career.

Woodring Airport Enid Woodring Municipal Airport, located east of Enid, is a municipal airport named in 1933 after famous test pilot, Lt. I.A. Woodring, according to the City of Enid website.

The airport is run by the Airport Director and local aviation legend, Keston Cook.

Keston Cook, an Oklahoma native, grew up spending time with his dad who was a station manager for United Airlines in Tulsa. While getting to fly frequently due to standby benefits, Keston grew his love for airports.

This passion ignited Keston’s interest to study aviation management and aerospace security at Oklahoma State University. After working in Appleton, Wisconsin, Keston had an opportunity to return to Oklahoma as the Operations Manager at Woodring Municipal Airport, here in Enid, Oklahoma. Three years later, Keston would take the helm as the Airport Director.

During his time as the Airport Operations Manager and now the Airport Director, Keston has seen a huge transformation in both the aviation industry in Oklahoma and Woodring’s infrastructure and services. Keston shared that the old terminal building, originally built in the seventies, was small, with almost no windows. As demands on the airport grew, Woodring underwent a large construction project to build this new terminal.

If you drive over to Woodring Airport now, you are greeted by a sleek building with a beautiful lobby, the Barnstormers Restaurant, airport offices, and a runway viewing yard complete with benches and a fence.

Woodring Airport has a legacy of punching above its weight, in large part because it runs its own Fixed Base Operator (FBO) service, which Keston translates to mean, the airport is, “self-sustaining on the fact that we don’t

have to take taxpayer revenue for day-to-day operations.”

The airport achieves this by selling its own fuel, renting hangars, etc… Woodring has also punched above its weight in terms of its expanding infrastructure. Over the years, Keston has led airport expansion projects including the opening of new joint-use hangars, the reconstruction of apron space, and the construction of eight new hangars, which were dedicated in November, 2024.

Keston shared that both the federal government and state government are prioritizing investing in aviation infrastructure through cost-sharing. For example, some of Woodring Airport projects are funded through the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) grants in which the FAA pays for 90% of a project and then the remaining 10% is typically split between the Oklahoma Department of Air Space and Aeronautics and the City of Enid, through the airport’s budget. The benefit of pursuing these funding sources is that it enables critical airport infrastructure

Learn about Aviation History In recent years, the American Military Heritage Museum opened a large exhibit in the former Sears store at Oakwood Mall. This 40,000 square foot space allows visitors to view aircraft, jeeps, and helicopters alongside other memorabilia. Beyond viewing exhibits, the museum also has interactive T-33 simulators, and F-4 and MiG-21 fighters and dioramas. Open Thursday through Saturday from 11 am to 4 pm with no admission fee, this museum is the perfect family outing and marks a great way of learning more about aviation for all ages.

projects to be completed, without putting a burden on the city’s own budget - a pretty incredible feat. It's through these projects that Keston and his team have positioned Enid to meet the evolving needs of Vance Air Force Base and attract new aviation businesses and general aviators to Enid.

Woodring Fly-In Breakfasts In addition to meeting the needs of aviators, Woodring also meets the needs of folks with a healthy appetite. If that’s you, you don’t want to miss the Woodring Fly-In Breakfasts! These breakfasts are hosted on the third of the month, typically starting in early Spring and finishing in November or December depending on the weather.

The breakfast features a wonderful buffet that opens at 7:30am and is $11 a plate. This is such a cool way to experience aviation in Enid in a family-friendly restaurant environment.

According to estimates from Boeing, over the next 20 years, there will be a need for 430,000 new personnel in the aerospace industry in North America, including 123,000 technicians. These are positions with strong wages. For example, aircraft mechanics and service technicians, positions that do not require college degrees, have a median wage of $36.66/hour according to the Department of Labor. With such an incredible opportunity to create a stable and meaningful livelihood in such a thriving industry, organizations across enid are hard at work to ensure that our residents have access to the knowledge, skills and opportunity to enter this growing industry.

One of those organizations is Enid Regional Development Alliance (ERDA), which is excited to host its annual Northern Oklahoma Student Aero Day on September 23, 2026 this year! According to ERDA, this day is meant to, “inspire the next generation of pilots, engineers, technicians, and innovators,” and intended to be a hub for students, educators, and industry partners to convene for, “a full day of interactive learning, exploration, and career discovery.”

Aviation Day will bring students to visit the key aviation locations across Enid to include: Woodring Municipal

Airport, the Stride Bank Center, and hopefully Tango Flight.

Across these venues, students will get to experience flight and simulator demonstrations, military aircraft, drones, and emerging aviation technologies. This is a wonderful opportunity for teachers to partake in STEM career exploration and for students to ask questions and learn about how the aviation industry can take their future to new heights.

Building A Strong Foundation in High School Beginning in High School, students in Enid have the opportunity to participate in Tango Flight. Tango Flight is a non-profit that was created, “to inspire the next generation of engineers, pilots, aviation mechanics and technicians,” (Tangoflight.com). Through specialized curriculum, students have the opportunity to develop, “a strong mechanical, electrical, and aerospace engineering foundation and fundamental technical and mechanical skills to build an FAA certified airplane.”

In January 2026, Enid High School’s Tango Flight Program completed its inaugural airplane - a kitbuilt Van’s RV-12, taking

over two years and the effort of twenty-one students to complete.

According to the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA), this was the first high school class to complete creating their aircraft in Oklahoma - a huge feat! Not only that, but it was reported by the EAA that it was also one of the best-built aircrafts the Tango Flight and FAA officials had seen.

Making A Difference Making a Difference (MAD) is an impactful local nonprofit organization in Enid that offers counseling, after school programming, and other support services for youth. Among these programs is the MAD Aerospace Program. According to their website, the MAD Aerospace Program, “aims to fuel the enthusiasm for aviation and aerospace among teenagers.” To do this, MAD offers hands-on activities, STEM projects, learning sessions, field trips, and guest speakers to bring students along an, “educational journey into the fascinating realms of aeronautics and astronautics.”

Teens also have access to flight simulators, which were donated

by Vance Airforce Base. According to the Fort Worth Aviation Museum, a flight simulator, “is a technologically advanced machine that is built around the look and feel of an aircraft’s cockpit.” These are wonderful virtual learning opportunities because students get to sit in a cockpit seat surrounded by realistic controls and oftentimes recognize the landscape below where they are flying in a simulator.

This program is available for middle and high school students and follows the Enid Public Schools calendar. Students partake in the program from 4:00-5:30pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays at no-cost.

Vance Air Force Base Of course, no mention of aviation in Enid would be complete without mentioning Vance Air Force Base, which originated as the Air Corps Basic Flying School, a training facility for the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. Operations were briefly deactivated in 1947 before being reactivated again in 1948 after the Air Force expressed a need for more training facilities during the beginning of the Cold War (Oklahoma Historical Society). The base re-opened as Vance Air Force Base, named for Lt. Col. Vance, a Congressional Medal of Honor recipient and Enid native and has since been home to the Seventy-first Flying Training Wing. Vance Air Force Base continues to execute its mission of training and delivering worldclass pilots. Students undergo Undergraduate Pilot Training in the T-6 and T-38.

Vance Air Force Base Presents Wings Over Enid 2027 Airshow Vance Air Force Base continues to bring the aviation industry to life for community members and will be doing so in its thrilling 2027 Wings Over Enid Airshow! This airshow will be hosted on Saturday, July 24, 2027 and is open to the public, at no-cost. Old and young alike can plan to fix their eyes to the sky and revel in the excitement of the Air Force Thunderbirds performance.

This action-packed event will welcome military and civilian aircrafts, feature static displays, concessions, and merchandise. Bring your sunscreen and be sure to check out the Science Technology Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) barn for children, enjoy the flavors of

the Dragon’s BBQ Cook-Off and check out the Afterburner Auto Show. With so many options, this will be a summer event to remember.

Adult Book Review

The Letter Carrier

Author: Francesca Giannone | Rating: AA AAA AAB The background of this month’s book is a little different than my usual reads: The Letter Carrier was published in Italy in 2023 by debut author Francesca Giannone. It became a best-selling sensation over there and was subsequently translated into different languages. The English version, translated by Elettra Pauletto, came out in hardback here in 2025 and in paperback just last month, July 2026. If you like family sagas with memorable characters that span decades, you’re in for a treat with The Letter Carrier.

The book begins in 1934, with Anna and her husband, Carlo, moving from northern Italy to the south to be closer to his family. While Carlo gets started on planting a wine vineyard, Anna quickly shocks the villagers in all sorts of ways – she isn’t Catholic, she reads Russian novels, and on top of everything, she signs up to be the town’s first female letter carrier. As time goes by, even if some still call her an outlander, her tenacity and her kindness draw people to her – including Carlo’s brother, Antonio. Over the course of the book’s 400 pages, spanning 30 years, we see what becomes of the two main families and the villagers around them.

I was so impressed with this novel and thoroughly enjoyed reading it. It reminded me of Buckeye, that I reviewed back in December 2025 – just a slow, steady, gorgeous book. Now, The Letter Carrier is not perfect. The ending was abrupt and disappointing to me, and some of the jumps in time in the book were odd. The characters are marvelous, though, and the fact that Anna was inspired by the author’s own great-grandmother is really neat too. I’m happy I joined the hype with this book, and I feel motivated now to keep broadening my horizons and reading more translated works.

Ancient History Between Us Author: Kaitlyn Hill | Rating: AAAAB

We’re going to stay in Italy for this month’s young adult review as well. Ancient History Between Us, by author Kaitlyn Hill, was released in June of this year and is a romantic comedy that definitely gives off Mamma Mia vibes. It follows Cammie and West, two childhood friends-turned-enemies who are unsuspectingly reunited while on summer break.

Cammie’s mother and West’s father made a famous archaeological discovery outside of Naples 20 years ago, and the two families have returned to the site now to mark the occasion and film a documentary. Cammie and West, though, have not seen one another for three years, after a falling out over their first kiss. Unbeknownst to everyone else, Cammie has another reason to return to Italy: she wants to find out who her dad is. With her

mother’s old journal in hand, Cammie ropes West into helping her track down the different guys mentioned in the entries. As their adventure ramps up, their friendship starts to heal and the feelings they had for each other resurface.

I often get asked for cute, clean romances that are appropriate for teenage readers, and I think this book fits that well. The age range is stated as 12+, but I would bump that up just a bit due to language. There weren’t a ton of curse words, but there were definitely some. And Cammie and West are college students, so that’s another reason I would go a few years higher. But as for the story itself, the characters are all well-written, and the descriptions of Italy – the sights, the smells, the tastes, etc – are fantastic. Overall I thought this was a really fun, enjoyable read.

Thinking of You

I don’t know about you, but have you ever been on the receiving end of a “thinking of you” note or gift that was so unexpected it brought you to tears or you couldn’t stop thinking about it? I know I have! Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about the concept of what it means to have a village, but also what it means to be part of building that village.

I strongly believe that going out of your way to let someone know you are thinking about them can be the impetus to building stronger, more meaningful relationships. Whether it's a new acquaintance from a moms coffee meet-up or an old best friend that is navigating a health challenge, I challenge you to spot someone who might be in need of a pick-me-up and share some ideas below for ways to make them feel part of your village!

1. The new mama on the block: Oftentimes when we have friends or family welcome a new little one to the family, we focus on the immediate newborn stage. But when was the last time you checked in on your friend in the 3-7 month zone? This is often a time when transitioning back to work, the accumulation of sleepless nights and resuming “normal life” converge, leaving a new family silently struggling. This is a great time to reach out with a “thinking of you” note or gift. It could be as simple as dropping off some meal-prepped breakfast burritos (a crowd pleaser) with an encouraging note, or maybe if you are close with the family it means offering to watch the baby so that the new parents can go on a breakfast date. Regardless, being as specific as possible with your support offer during this time will go beyond words.

2. Your child or spouse with a stressful upcoming project: We’ve all been in a situation before where it seems like multiple projects or exams converge on the same date and we turn into an overwhelmed ball of stress. That’s why it can be so impactful to pause and offer some encouragement and support to someone else going through this situation. In particular, I can think of nothing bet-

ter than a simple pre-packed lunch with an encouraging note. It doesn’t need to be expensive, it can be prepping someone’s favorite sandwich or sugary treat and sneaking it into their lunch with a sweet hand-written note.

3. A colleague or friend who achieved a new milestone: Celebrating each other’s successes is such a sweet way of making those around us feel seen and supported. For that coworker who just received a well-earned promotion, this could look like organizing a team potluck lunch to celebrate or leaving their favorite coffee on their desk in the morning to celebrate. For that friend who maybe just landed an interview for a new job, maybe this is taking her out to get her nails done before the interview or for the friend who landed a new job, maybe it's ordering a custom business card holder from Etsy.

Whether it’s a splurge or something small, I promise you that the simple pleasure of supporting the folks in your village will help spread joy to those in need!

Instructions

1. Prepare Pans Line two baking sheets with silicone baking mats and set aside.

2. Sift Dry Ingredients In a medium bowl, sift together the powdered sugar and almond flour. Do not press the mixture through the sieve; allow it to fall through naturally. Transfer the mixture to a food processor and pulse for 20 seconds. Stop, scrape down the sides, and pulse for another 10 seconds. Sift the mixture again into the same bowl and set aside.

3. Whip the Egg Whites In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the whisk attachment, add the egg whites. Mix on medium speed for about 30 seconds until foamy. Add the cream of tartar and continue mixing on medium speed.

4. Add Sugar and Flavoring Gradually add the granulated sugar, 1 tablespoon at a time, occasionally scraping down the sides of the bowl to remove sugar buildup. Add the vanilla extract (or other flavoring) and gel food coloring if using.Continue mixing until stiff peaks form.

5. Macaronage Using a spatula, gently fold the almond flour mixture into the meringue in three additions. Once incorporated, press the batter against the side of the bowl to remove large air bubbles. This stage is called macaronage.

6. Check Consistency The batter is ready when it flows from the spatula in a ribbon and can form a figure-eight while briefly holding its shape.

Transfer the batter to a piping bag fitted with a medium round tip (such as a Wilton 1A).

7. Pipe the Shells Pipe 1-inch rounds onto the prepared baking sheets, spacing them about 2 inches apart.

8. Remove Air Bubbles & Rest Gently tap the baking sheets on the counter to release air bubbles. Pop any remaining large bubbles with a toothpick. Let the macarons rest for 40 minutes before baking. They should feel dry to the touch and appear less glossy. Very Important: Do not skip the resting time.

9. Bake Toward the end of the resting period, preheat the oven to 270°F. Bake for 18 minutes, rotating the pan 180° after 8 minutes. Allow the macarons to cool completely on the baking sheet before removing.

Instructions for filling: White Chocolate Ganache

1. The white chocolate ganache filling needs about 2 hours to set, so I recomm end making it first! It can also be made up to a week in advance. I usually make it the night before.

2. Place 210g of white chocolate in a medium-sized bowl and set aside.

3. Pour 80g heavy cream into a heat-proof bowl and heat in 15-second interva ls in the microwave until it just begins to bubble (this usually takes me about a minute). If you don't have a microwave, heat the cream over medium-high heat in a saucepan until it starts to bubble and steam.

4. Pour the heavy cream over the white chocolate. Make sure all the white chocolate is submerged beneath the cream. Let the mixture sit for a couple of minutes.

5. Use an immersion blender or a spoon to mix the ganache until the mixture has come together and is smooth. Press a piece of plastic wrap flush against the ganache and place the bowl in the fridge to chill.

6. When you're ready to use this ganache, place it in a piping bag fit with a large round piping tip. It should be thick enough to scoop into the piping bag and hold its shape.

7. Pipe a thick dollop of white chocolate ganache on one macaron shell. Gently press a second shell on top of the ganache to create a sandwich.

8. Place the finished macarons in an airtight container and chill in the fridge overnight, then enjoy! Store any leftover macarons in the fridge.

Notes from Japan

Hi! And welcome to Teen Scene in Enid Monthly. In July, I had the opportunity to visit one of the most beautiful countries in the world: JAPAN!! So, let’s talk about my trip and some surprising culture shocks that I experienced.

The culture shocks started as soon as we stepped foot out of the airport.

We had to take a 2 hour train ride to our hotel, so we got our tickets and went on our way to board the “Narita Express”! After riding for a few minutes, we realized that nobody was talking, besides us! This also occurred with every subway ride we took. Despite being packed with rush hour, every subway car was always quiet. I noticed most passengers reading a book or manga, watching anime, or simply just sleeping! There were a lot of signs on the wall stating to keep quiet or to keep your volume off, so we adapted pretty quickly to keeping our mouths closed LOL. Japan is known for being one of the cleanest countries in the world, and to my surprise this statement is not wrong. Since Tokyo is the largest and most populated city in Japan, I assumed that there would be at least some litter here and there. Coming from small town Oklahoma you can walk almost anywhere and see a public trash can, but in Tokyo trash cans were very difficult to find. Locals would simply just carry their trash with them and wait till they got home or to work to throw anything away. I also never saw a local eating or drinking anything while walking in the streets. This is apparently a great way to spot a tourist!

One of the biggest trends that was all over my social media was 7-Eleven and Lawson runs! Here in Oklahoma, I only go into convenience stores to get a fountain drink or a quick snack, but in Japan you can make meals or eat fresh desserts! There are a lot of popular items amongst tourists, like “COOLISH”, strawberries and cream sandwiches, and mixed drinks with ice cups. Locals also stop at these stores on a day to day basis for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, and to be honest, how could they not! The food was always fresh, and the fruit was perfectly ripe. Now, if you weren’t in the mood to stop in a convenience store then you could always find a vending machine 10 steps away. They were everywhere! Outside of temples, in parks, by designer stores, and of course inside train stations.

My favorite part about Tokyo, and Japan as a whole, that I would consider shocking, was how green everything was. In a massive city that people would probably assume to be a “Concrete Jungle,” you could find a luscious tree or a blooming hydrangea bush on every corner. I got to visit the Shinjuku Gyeon National Garden, which was located right in the middle of Tokyo, and it was the most well kept and beautiful park I had ever seen.

I am so incredibly lucky to visit such beautiful countries and experience such fascinating cultures.

I would have to say Japan is 100% in the top 3 of my favorites. I wish I had all the space to tell you about my trip, but I sadly don’t! I hope to study abroad in or around Tokyo in the next couple of years, so maybe I can make it up and tell an awesome story! Thank you for reading this month’s article! Downtown Enid Set to Welcome ”Switch” Coffeehouse and Restaurant Photos taken by Chris Feeney

Downtown Enid is about to get a major boost of energy, flavor, and community spirit. Switch Coffeehouse and Restaurant, the latest venture from entrepreneurs Chris Feeney, Ron Hammock, and Chad Forbeck, is officially opening its doors this August. The highly anticipated rollout will happen in two phases, with the coffeehouse scheduled to begin serving

by August first, and the restaurant portion following shortly after.

Ron Hammock is a serial entrepreneur with dozens of companies under his belt including a restaurant and coffeehouse in Ponca City. Switch is a replication of that successful business, in hopes to bring attention to the downtown Enid area. Chad Forbeck is the owner of E-Town Realty as well as many other businesses. Chris Feeney manages sixteen businesses across Enid, Ponca City, and Stillwater and is also no stranger to the hospitality scene. They are all driven to aid Enid with their deeply impactful mission. The three men are known for providing meaningful employment opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities. With Switch, they hope to liven up the downtown area while continuing this mission. ”We want to replicate that success in Enid,” Feeney shared, “while helping to employ a few individuals who might not otherwise be able to obtain employment.”

Local foodies can look forward to an upscale dining experience with a unique, ecoconscious aesthetic. Feeney- who operates a household recycling service across Enid, Ponca City, Cushing, and Perkins- is a passionate advocate for salvaging materials. In fact, the cafes eye-catching tables and countertops have been completely refurbished from old bowling alley lanes, rescued from a barn full of salvaged materials Feeney has collected over the years.

While the exact menu remains a secret at the time, they promise to bring diverse and exciting options to the Enid food scene. The culinary lineup will primarily feature American cuisine, infused with Asian and Mexican inspired twists. Switch aims to be more than just a place to grab a bite. Plans are already underway to host local live music, trivia nights, and what Feeney calls ”outside-the-box community events”.

UROLOGY 101: What’s Important to Know Urologic health is an important part of overall wellness and can affect both men and women at different ages. The following questions and answers provide a simple overview of common urology topics.

Q: Urinary leakage is an issue affecting mainly women. What causes this and what are some of the treatments?

Stress incontinence is usually caused by weak pelvic floor muscles. It is most common in women during pregnancy and after childbirth. Try doing Kegel exercises to strengthen the muscles. To do them correctly, clench the pelvic muscles as if trying to hold urine. It takes about six weeks to re-strengthen the muscles.

Q: How can someone prevent recurrent urinary tract infections?

Urinary tract infections (UTI) are extremely common in women. Cranberry extract* and D-Mannose* are two natural supplements that can help prevent recurrent infections. They work by coating the bacteria so that with urination, it is flushed out of the bladder more effectively.

Medications may also be prescribed by your doctor to treat the infection.

Q: What are the symptoms of an enlarged prostate and how is it treated?

An enlarged prostate can lead to a weak urine stream, straining and incomplete emptying of the bladder.

Sometimes, medication is used to relax the prostate.

However, new treatments are available without burning or cutting the prostate. One procedure takes care of the obstructing portion of the prostate, and it can be done in the office under local anesthesia. If surgery is necessary, it can be performed with robotic instrumentation, which can allow enhanced vision, control and precision.

Q: At what age should men begin prostate cancer screening?

A PSA blood test and prostate exam are the standard screening tests.

The American Cancer Society® recommends that men at average risk begin discussing prostate cancer screening at age 50, men at higher risk — including African American men and those with a first-degree relative diagnosed before age 65 — at age 45, and men with more than one first-degree relative diagnosed at an early age at age 40. Screening decisions should be made through an informed discussion with a healthcare provider. PSA testing is the primary screening test. A digital rectal exam may also be part of the screening process.
