OUTDATED BATHROOM TRENDS TO AVOID
Bathrooms are equal parts sanctuary and utility. They are both a room where you can light a candle and relax the day's thoughts away, and a practical space for getting ready, grooming and bathing the kids. Aesthetically speaking, bathrooms should feel welcoming, serene and functional. When a décor choice works against any of the above, it ends up a space that doesn't feel quite right. Below are some trends that will move the look and feel of your bathroom into the New Year(s).
ALL WHITE EVERYTHING… The all-white bathroom trend was based on the idea that bright white looks squeaky clean. Unfortunately, with the white walls and backdrop, you are able to see dirty spots more easily. It also requires expert-level upkeep—or else it really does look dirty.
OVERSIZED BATHTUBS… Oversized tubs can make a bold statement in the bathroom, but they often take up useful space. They are also an unsustainable and expensive option in terms of water consumption. Rather than opting for the large tub, try simply adding a “pop of color” with a colorful accent wall behind the tub, featuring paint or wallpaper or possibly just adding black or gold hardware.
ORNATE VANITIES… Now is the time to swap out any bathroom vanities and cabinets with overly ornate millwork. The alternative to add in is something more streamlined such as a flat front or even completely hidden cabinetry.
WALK IN SHOWERS… Also called “curbless” these showers do not have a lip separating the floor tile from the bathing space. These began with good intentions, mainly a clean sleek look. It definitely looks sleek when incorporated into the right area, however, people tend to miss that having a necessary linear drain presents other problems. The linear drains used for this tend to clog easily and overflow into the bathroom creating a whole other set of problems.
WOODEN BEAM CEILINGS… Wooden beams add cozy, earthy warmth, but they're not the most practical choice for a bathroom. Wood loves to absorb moisture, which causes it to swell and could become a breeding ground for mold and mildew. You can seal and treat wooden ceilings, but keep in mind that this requires upkeep over the years. Achieving the look and feel can be easily imitated by adding teak wood or bamboo accessories throughout the room.
LARGE RECTANGULAR TILES… While large tiles might have once felt trendy, it now tends to read as mundane. The alternative would be to go with unexpected shaped tiles with a sense of personality. There are a variety of tiles available that offer variety in shapes, prints, and textures. These can also be installed in different patterns to add variety.
Following just a few simple tips, you can easily create a space you'll feel excited to walk into time and again.
