01. HETEROGENEOUS TRANSIT - IN THE FORMAL/ INFORMAL: MIGRATING CLIMATE IN THE IMMIGRANT CITY Fall 2020, Studio project, Columbia University Team with: Yuan Liu, Liwei Guo Instructor: Phu Hoang The studio engages with immigrant communities to learn their everyday appropriations and adaptations to formal systems. Looking at informal system into formal system, and thinking different approaches as climate crsis happen especially during Covid period. Design architecture or infrastructure to support and solve the problem that immigrant communities would face during global health crsis, and other social problems. Our project is heterogeneous transit. It starts with the reconstruction of the self and the other, followed by the intrusion of heterogeneous culture in social life. The heterogeneous transit starts with the reconstruction of the immigrant's daily life followed by the intrusion of food culture and knowledge acquisition in social life.

PLANETARY SCALE

As the sea level rises in 2100, some urban road transportation will be cut down. But the current railway system in New york city will be affected less. Facing the potential climate crisis, we are working on designing a community center transit to reconnect the food supply chain, supporting Chinese immigrants with their business and life. We hope to replace the long-distance food source from Miami with new transportation, which will reconnect urban and regional community gardens and greenhouses through railways to form a food supply network. Greenhouses will be created on the top of industrial buildings, factories and shopping malls like auto repair and Macy’s that are next to the railway. And our building will distribute cheap cooked food to the other immigrant communities through the railway network.

HETEROGENEOUS TRANSIT

BUILDING SCALE - PROGRAM & CONVEYOR SYSTEM We start our program with designing a heterogeneous conveyor system which is the anti-type in our program. Compared with general staircase and circulation, our informal convey system could be regarded as a combination of function and transportation. We have two types of conveyor. The purple one is the food conveyor and blue one is the book conveyor. Food conveyor system connects with railway and urban road transportation for food resources loading. The goods from outside of the building will be transported to storage through the food conveyor. For food consumption, the conveyor connects different rooms like cinema, library, language school in the building with food carts and food transportation bents. It is easy to get some snacks and beverages wherever you are. Book conveyor system connects the library, language school, and restaurant on different levels through conveyor and book cart. The horizontal book transportation bent in conveyor will also combine with bookshelves where users can choose what they want to read. Two types of conveyor systems will interact with each other through the food carts, the cart will serve for book delivery which will provide books and foods on the building. And some carts could park in our building during the night. Different types of functions are expressed in different colors, and their functions are permeable to each other. This means that you can not only read books in the fixed library on one floor, you can pick up a book on any floor and read it, and buy fried rice in the Food cart nearby, you can put the book in the conveyor, it will go back to the library by itself. The shuffled column grid will provide signages on the facade several anchor points in different directions.

SIGNAGE FACADE & SECTION Sginage Facade: The solid part is made of Polycarbonate envelope with internal CLT panel, while the void part is made of glass with steel structure. In the daytime, the chair and table will be stored away. The food carts will show on the building facade to attract consumers on the street, this activities can be served as a dynamic signage. At night, the signage will be lit up. The faint light will come through the transparent material, and the study Room in the box will provide a small and independent space for language learners.

- MIGRATIONS: BODIES IN MOVEMENT

Spring 2021, Studio project, Columbia University Individual work Instructor: Mario Gooden, Torkwase Dyson "Informed by the history of radical thinking about architecture in the 20th century yet look beyond to the manner of space making that Indigenous Peoples and Black bodies throughout the diaspora have creatively appropriated various aspects of the landscape and built environment to invent new uses, programs, and forms of visibility. Out of necessity and due to the fugitive conditions of life, these modalities have always been and remain agile, transformable, and fluid—suggestive of the ways in which such people have moved through space, negotiated the barriers of social, political, and economic landscapes, and reformulated spatial conditions through these very migrations and displacements, improvising new ways of being. Proposed a design intervention at the site of the historic Hinchliffe Stadium in Paterson, New Jersey on the escarpment above Paterson's National Historic Great Falls to consider a project for environmental liberation."

DESIGN CONCEPT The site used to be the home of Lenape tribe and has been through protest, strike, contamination by manufacturing mills and still in danger now, bodies that include people who worked here, ground, water and air were injured. Though the labor condition is getting better than before, working still become one of the problems that caused stress today. The proposal aims to provide a space for people who got huge stress or damage to repair and rest physically and mentally through individual and private meditation room, and counseling room to release their stress. To understand the history of the site (manufacturing develop, strike) and Lenape history, culture through different exhibition areas. To experience Lenape cultural practices through several handcraft, music and history workshops and classes, also to purify water by plants and have fish inside both for views and fishing.

03. LOOP - HOUSEFAIL Summer 2021, Studio project, Columbia University Individual work Instructor: Dan Wood, Nuar Alsadir, Maurizio Mattioli Based on 12 rules of manifesto we created in the class to design our own house. "Will utilize techniques of looking inward to unlock creative potential in the design of a private house. It will be an experimental house, on a site of your choosing, that will attempt to move beyond the “dream house” to one that embodies a broader range of subconscious actions, desires, emotions, gestures, elements...Students should be prepared to embark on a journey that may fail. Indeed, we will be embracing failure as a distinct possibility. We will be exploring the essence of the creative act, with its origins in the often hidden 'inner child' who is not afraid to do or say things that might be considered ugly or unconventional or even foolish. As Chekhov wrote, 'Don’t be afraid to show yourself foolish; we must have freedom of thinking, and only he is an emancipated thinker who is not afraid to write [design] foolish things.'" It is a way to explore myself Backing to the beginning to restart and reflect on self again Looking at my contradictory inside and enlarge them Blending personal, social, and in-between then affect each other Each room has its own emotion Enjoy the contradictory Enjoy the uncomfortable Enjoy the reflection

Housefail Manifesto To unleash new forces and techniques of architectural production To rid architecture of tropes and cliches To recreate the world without by looking within 1. Fail Better Don’t view mistakes as things to correct but opportunities for discovery, new ways of thinking. 2. We are our choices. Make conscious choices rather than acting on autopilot, following protocol. 3. Target the body! Unconscious communication happens outside of language. Focus on how things feel or are experienced physically rather than what they look like from the outside—how they match up to agreed-upon aesthetics.

8. Don’t label rooms with recognizable labels, or, do label rooms with terms from an internal language No “Bedroom” or “Great Room.” Yes “Holding Environment”, “Mixing Chamber”. 9. Make us feel what you feel Don’t design for a generic client. Design for yourself and make the client feel what you feel, expand their horizons of being. 10. Don’t infect the design with answers (Blanchot: “The answer is the disease of the question.”)

4. Keep it bumpy Retain the hooks and snags. Don’t smooth things out, clean up too much.

11. No soundtrack Don’t try to control how other people feel.

5. Don’t get comfortable.

12. Make a cross section of a whisper If a project is too narrative, turn up internal projector. If it is too abstract, turn up the internal projector.

6. Cognize rather than recognize See things anew, defamiliarize. 7. No unified narrative: no recognizable formal structure. No preordained sequence. No symbolism. No trappings of a recognizable kind of house containing a prototypic narrative about the people who live there. No organization based on predicating logic, structure, services as architectural tropes.

04. TRANSITIONAL GEOMETRIES Spring 2021, Elective project, Columbia University Individual work Instructor: Joshua Jordan "Investigating tiling and modular fabrications. To explore the organizational, experiental, and aesthetic performance of units and repetition in architectural composition. Considering the history and application of tiling effects and techniques in the making of architecture, as well as study the geometric principles that lead to existing and potentially new systems of connections of parts. To develop the skill sets involved fabricating the units: through mold-making, casting substances, and other materials and methods. Looking at moldmaking craft as an analog to construction logics writ large, efficiencies and economies of modular fabrication, and the development of fabrication systems in new and innovative ways."

Under water

Tension

Besides the lins and dots, we hope the interior also has a under water feeling. By using the plaster drop to create a water natural characteristic feeling, and have a lighting effect of drop. The light and dark on the model creates a high contrast as well.

By using glue's organic characteristic and plaster's solid to stratch and creates a tension on the model. Tension of the model creates a organic solid and void shapes on the model.

Close

Creek streams

All the space made by plaster in curve to create a close and private atmosphere in the space. It provides a dark space and the curves smooth the edge of the space, and the ceiling has height differences so that people feel more personal in the space.

By contrasting with the ocean around the site, we create creeks in it. By making two layers of plaster to create creek streams in void. The crack between two pieces of plaster create a different depth of void, and emphasizes the void in the model.

Hills

Embrace

Transparence

Following the creek strams, the hill is made. It emphasizes the solid in the model. The shadow of solid strong the void at the same time, and create a strong height differences.

A connection between solid and water, void and water. It embraces both water and plaster, and have various atmospheres at the same time.

Plaster creates the solid feeling and collides with water as void and soft feeling. Metal mesh as a void space and collides with water. From the model, it provides different level of voids and solid at the same time. It creates a transition from solid to void.

NOW AND FUTURE Current site

Proposal

By using plaster and colors to create a complex natural typography and land. Our site is an industrial zone located in the Kicukiro district and the site in one of the major wetland and watershed areas. The factories in the site currently pollutes the wetland and the neighbors around. The aims to renovate the industrial zone. There is no proper sewage system to collect grey water. As the result the grey water would just flew into the lower land and contaminate the land, especially the space like Kigali that has huge height differences.

Using an organic form to create an area for farming and connection between two hills. Farmland will replace original industrial area, and provides crops to the market to sell, will also provides job opportunities. At the same time, planting certain plants to restore the polluted wetland, and purify the grey water and protect the wetland. Besides, create a pathway for people will let people has more experience in the wetland. Since the site is one of the biggest wetland in Kigali, people should engage to wetland but reserve the wetland at the same time.

RESTORE WETLAND AND IMPROVE COMMUNITY Section Developed a market and performing area in the wetland to provide space allow people gather together. Made a connection between two hills to solve the traffic problem, and restore wetland by plants like Cyperus , Typha domingensis and waterlily as a filter for grey water. and clean the contaminated soil by industrial factories. The plants will absorb the heavy metal and posion stuff from the soil, and the soil can be healed slowly. Fresh soil will cover on the top of old soil and created farmlands include water farmland that can provide job opportunities, and the food from farmland can sell directly in the market.

The connection also provides several paths allow passengers walk down but without touching wetland. They can enjoy wetland and view the farmland around them at the same time.

There is also the fish farmland as well, the water are purified by plants. The local fish was fed by the rabbits' excrement.

Grey water from hills flew into wetland and polluted wetland, the chemical waste and substances left from the old industrial zone also polluted old land. Planting filtering plants such as Cyperus Longus, Typha Domingensis as the first phase, can also cure the polluted ground slowly as the same time. And then plant aquatic plants like water lily as the second phase. Then the purify water will flow to the farmland area.

The bridge connecting two hills will also be the night market provides people sell food and other stuff.
